Hello everyone and welcome back to horror stories. I know many of you use these episodes to fall asleep so before you drift off, I'd love it if you could leave a comment letting me know where you're listening from around the world.
Starting point is 00:01:19 Also, don't forget to like and subscribe if you're enjoying the episodes. Story 1 This happened when I was a little kid, maybe six or seven. My family has always been very religious, so Easter was a huge celebration for us. just like most of the other major religious holidays. In fact, now that I think about it, even Sundays kind of felt like a holiday because of how seriously my parents treated church.
Starting point is 00:01:50 It's actually kind of funny. Some of my earliest memories are church-related. What I'm about to tell you is one of them. It was Easter Sunday, and as usual, the services were much longer than normal. I didn't mind, though. My parents had instilled a deep love for Christ in me from a very young age.
Starting point is 00:02:08 After the service came Sunday school, or CCD, as our parish called it. I know many churches don't hold classes after important masses, but ours did and always had. So just like countless times before, my parents walked me down to the classrooms in the lower level, drop me off and said goodbye. Let me describe the layout of the church now so the rest of the story makes sense. Our church had a split-level layout. The main sanctuary was upstairs, where the altar and pews were. and the classrooms were in the basement.
Starting point is 00:02:42 Technically it was a basement, but the way the land sloped, you could also enter and exit from that lower level. There was a long-carpeted hallway with about seven or eight classrooms on either side, divided by age group. My classroom was one of the first on the left. At the end of the hall were the restrooms, one for boys and one for girls. Right next to them was a heavy gray door that led outside. That door was usually locked from the inside,
Starting point is 00:03:07 but I remember hearing that it could be used in case of an emergency. Adults always warned us never to go out through that door because it would lock behind us and we wouldn't be able to get back into the church. Back to the story. Everything downstairs was decorated for Easter. And I'm not talking about simple decorations. The walls were covered in pastel streamers.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Paper cutouts shaped like lambs and crosses and pictures of Jesus with children were taped between classroom doors. Even some of the teachers wore those cheap bunny ear headbands you can get at pharmacies. Honestly, it felt a lot more joyful down there than during the mass. All the kids were in a great mood, probably because we knew there would be Easter egg hunts later. Normally I'd wait until class was over to go to the bathroom, but the service had gone on much longer than usual that day, and I just couldn't hold it. I raised my hand, asked for permission, and my teacher let me go. The bathrooms were only about 15 feet away, and it was normal for kids to go alone.
Starting point is 00:04:12 We were always told that if we took too long, someone would come check on us, but I don't remember that ever actually happening. So I slipped out quietly while the rest of my class was busy coloring pictures of the empty tomb in the risen Jesus. I entered the boy's bathroom and closed the stall door behind me. Everything was silent. The bathroom was old, so the only thing I could hear was the soft hum of the fluorescent lights and the faint echo of a teacher's voice coming from the hallway. But then while I was sitting there, I heard a strange noise from the stall next to mine. It wasn't a normal sound like someone moving around or unlocking a door. It was metallic, uneven, and slow, like something being dragged or scraped against the inside
Starting point is 00:04:56 of the door. It wasn't loud, but it was sharp. I don't remember feeling scared in that moment. mostly I just felt confused. At first I thought it was another kid, so I didn't say anything and just finished what I needed to do. When I was washing my hands, I looked in the mirror and saw the door to the other stall slowly open.
Starting point is 00:05:17 But instead of another kid coming out, it was an adult dressed in an Easter bunny costume. I remember the ears were a bit floppy, and the suit didn't look right. It was loose and stained like it had never been cleaned. The fur wasn't bright white, It was more of a dirty gray. One of the costume's eyes looked like it had been sewn back on, but crooked.
Starting point is 00:05:39 Even then, I didn't feel scared when I saw him. Like I said, I was really young, and in my mind I just thought the Easter Bunny was giving me a surprise. I even smiled and turned around to face him. I think I said something like, hi. He didn't respond. He just stood there halfway out of the stall, staring at me. His head was slightly tilted and he didn't move. I started to feel a little awkward, like I was supposed to say something else but didn't know what.
Starting point is 00:06:09 After a long silence, he stepped out and slowly raised one arm, pointing toward the door, like he was guiding me to go outside. That's when he finally spoke. His voice was muffled through the costume, but I still remember exactly what he said. You're the lucky chosen boy. I have a gift for you outside. I didn't even hesitate. I was genuinely excited, honestly thrilled by the idea of being picked for a special Easter surprise. I think being in church made me feel safe, like nothing bad could possibly happen.
Starting point is 00:06:43 I pushed open the heavy gray door without a second thought, completely forgetting that it was supposed to stay closed. The Easter bunny followed silently behind me and started walking across the pavement toward the far corner of the church parking lot. There was a car parked in that area. partially hidden behind a dumpster and some bushes. I remember thinking it was odd that someone would park so far away, and that the bunny didn't have a basket or candy or anything like that. At some point he even started holding my hand. We were about halfway across the parking lot when I saw it. A second Easter bunny stepping out of the car we were headed toward. I froze. My young mind didn't know what to make of it. I kept looking back and forth between the two costumes
Starting point is 00:07:28 totally confused. I hadn't seen that car before, and now there were two bunnies. Something stopped feeling magical. Everything started to feel wrong. To this day, I believe what happened next was divine intervention. One of the teachers, I think her name was Miss Sabrina, just happened to be walking around the church, maybe setting up for the egg hunt or checking on something outside. She looked toward the parking lot at the exact moment they were leading me to the car. I'll never forget the scream she let out. It was the scariest sound I've ever heard in my life. The man in the costume immediately let go of my hand and bolted toward the car,
Starting point is 00:08:09 and I, without thinking, turned and ran in the opposite direction, straight into Miss Sabrina's arms. Once I was safe with her, I turned my head just in time to see the car speeding away out of the parking lot. I'm not completely sure, but I think I saw another kid in the back seat of that car. Miss Sabrina didn't see him, but I told her. She believed me instantly. What happened in the hours that followed is a bit blurry in my mind. She immediately alerted the other adults, and eventually the police came to talk to me about what had happened.
Starting point is 00:08:42 They asked about the kid I thought I saw, and I tried my best to describe him, even though I'd only seen him for a second and didn't know if my imagination was messing with me. My parents were the most upset, and rightfully so. I remember my mom cried for over an hour when we got home. The police investigated the church, but they didn't find anything concrete. There were no missing child reports in the area, so they didn't have much to go on.
Starting point is 00:09:08 The most accepted theory was that whoever was inside that costume had a key to the back door and had been waiting in the bathroom for a child to come in. Unfortunately, that child was me. To this day, it's still deeply unseen. settles me. Whoever did this knew the place well. Otherwise, they wouldn't have known where to wait, how to get in, or how to escape so easily. But what haunts me most is that I'm almost certain there was another kid in that car. It's hard to go through an Easter without remembering this experience. Story 2. I graduated from high school last year, and what I'm about to tell you happened
Starting point is 00:09:48 right around that time. Easter has always been a fun time for my friends and me, but not for the reasons you might think. We've long outgrown those little kid Easter egg hunts that everyone loves when they're younger. In fact, I get second-hand embarrassment every time my parents make me join one with my little cousins. A few years ago, I don't remember exactly when. My friends and I came up with a different version of the classic Easter egg game. We made it more interesting and turned it into something like a cross between a scavenger hunt and a game of manhunt. We'd divide everyone into two teams, just like in manhunt, but with a twist. The seeking team also had to hide and protect a few eggs. If the hiding team managed to find and capture all the eggs, they'd win,
Starting point is 00:10:34 and if the seeking team couldn't find all the hidden players before time ran out, they'd lose too. There were some other silly rules like how the seekers couldn't camp right next to the hidden eggs, but that's not too important for what I'm about to share. It was Thursday just before Easter weekend and school had been cancelled for Friday for some reason I can't even remember. So we decided to have a sleepover that night. It was me, Jake, Grace, Chuck, Arthur, and Raz. Though Raz wasn't his real name, his last name was Razzy, but we all just called him Raz. He had by far the biggest house, so we usually hung out there. His place was out in the middle of nowhere, and his backyard backed up to a pretty large wooded area. Plus, his parents weren't
Starting point is 00:11:19 coming back until Friday night, so we'd have the whole place to ourselves. That night, we were in Raz's basement playing video games when Chuck suggested we play Manhunt. Everyone got hyped, so we grabbed some flashlights from Raz's garage and used a random team generator app on Jake's phone to assign teams. I ended up with Chuck and Raz. We were the seekers. Jake and Arthur would be hiding. Raz's mom had a bunch of plastic Easter eggs stored upstairs, so we grabbed a few and headed out to the backyard. We'd played on this land plenty of time so we knew the area well. The furthest boundary was a fence, and the other borders were a creek and a slope that led down to the neighbor's horse pasture. We set timers on our phones, one to give the hiding team
Starting point is 00:12:05 time to run, and one for us to hide our eggs. After ten minutes past, the game officially started. I should mention that the sun had already set, though it wasn't fully dark yet. When the timer went off, everyone scattered in different directions to cover more ground. I headed left toward the denser trees, while Raz and Chuck went the other way. I kept my flashlight aimed at the ground, covering it with my hand to keep it dim, mostly relying on the moonlight to guide me. The game was way more exciting when you really felt like you were stalking or sneaking. Plus, if someone from the other team spotted your flashlight, they'd bolt immediately. After a few minutes, I thought I saw something move about 25 or 30 feet ahead of me. At first I figured I was just seeing things, but then I saw it again.
Starting point is 00:12:55 I turned off my flashlight right away and froze. Someone was crouched behind a tree. Whoever it was, they didn't seem to notice me, because if they had, they probably would have run by now. The figure stayed still, like they were trying not to move at all. I assumed it was race. He always liked to hide near the seekers, thinking no one would suspect. it. I decided to circle around quietly and surprise him from behind. I crouched down a little and began moving slowly, trying to get the perfect angle. Once I was close enough, I jumped at him and grabbed his shoulder shouting, got you. But as soon as the person turned around, I was overwhelmed by a wave of pure terror. It wasn't one of my friends. It was a grown man with slicked back hair and wide
Starting point is 00:13:43 eyes like he was on something. His clothes were torn and filthy, and he reeked. I froze not understanding what was happening. Before I could react, the guy shoved me to the ground. I screamed when I hit the dirt, but I didn't get the chance to yell again. His hands were already wrapped tightly around my neck. He was using his full body weight to choke me, and in that moment, I honestly thought I was going to die. I couldn't breathe and didn't have the strength to fight him off. And then suddenly he stopped. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a flashlight beam moving through the trees. Someone was running toward us.
Starting point is 00:14:22 One of my friends must have heard something. The guy saw the light too because he jumped up instantly without saying a word and bolted into the woods, vanishing in seconds. I stayed on the ground, gasping for air, still in shock. Chuck reached me a few seconds later, helped me up, and said he'd seen the whole thing. I wanted to chase after the guy, but just... Chuck stopped me and told me it was a terrible idea. So instead we both ran straight back to Raz's house.
Starting point is 00:14:50 Chuck called the others and told them to come back to the house immediately. Once everyone was back, I told them what had happened, and Chuck filled in the rest. Everyone started freaking out, talking over each other, until Arthur said something that made the whole room go quiet. He said that before the game even started, before the initial 10-minute timer ran out, He'd seen two people walking among the trees near where he was hiding. They were moving slowly like they were watching or waiting for something. At the time, he thought it was two people from the other team breaking the rules.
Starting point is 00:15:24 That's when Chuck Raz and I all looked at each other and shook our heads. None of us had been walking together or even been in that part of the woods yet. And honestly, we wouldn't have even had time to get over there. The realization hit all of us at once. If it wasn't us, then there were at least the... three strangers in the woods that night, one who attacked me, and two others who had already been out there before the game even began. That's when I realized Chuck was right to stop me from chasing that man. I could have walked right into an ambush. I told everyone we needed to call the cops that
Starting point is 00:15:58 I'd been attacked, that this was serious. But before I could dial, Raz cut me off. He got weirdly serious and said, we're not calling anyone. I asked him what he meant, and he explained that he was technically grounded and also didn't have permission to invite friends over while his parents were gone. If the police found out, his parents would too, and he'd be in major trouble. I insisted that this was serious, that it needed to be reported, but he wouldn't budge. Everyone else was caught in the middle. Nobody wanted Raz to get in trouble, but it was obvious they all felt guilty pretending nothing had happened. In the end I gave in. I agreed not to call anyone and tried to make it through the rest of the night, but I was seriously shaken. I went to bed early and left
Starting point is 00:16:46 Raz's house the next morning before anyone else woke up. This might surprise you, but it didn't really affect me long term. I've always had a pretty practical mindset. Things happen and you move on. That's exactly what I did. A week later, Raz told us he felt guilty about leaving the Easter eggs scattered in the woods, so he worked up the nerve to go back and collect them, even though he terrified. We all laughed at that, but his comment made me remember everything that had happened and realize how lucky I was. I have no idea what those men were doing out there or what they were planning. But one thing's for sure, I'm never spending the night at Raz's again. These days, I'm in college, far away from the woods behind his house, but with Easter coming up again next
Starting point is 00:17:34 month. This story has been on my mind. Story three. Every Easter, my entire extended family makes the trip out to my Uncle John's house, which is located in a pretty remote area, surrounded by forest. Last year was no exception. Uncle John has a huge house sitting on a wide open piece of land, completely surrounded by trees. Even though I had been there many times before, I'd oddly never ventured into the woods behind his property. I've never been a nature. person so I never really had much interest in exploring the outdoors. To be honest, I didn't want to make the trip at all. I've never really felt connected to that side of my family. They're all super into the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and that sort of thing. And most of them have lived in the area their whole
Starting point is 00:18:26 lives. Whenever I'm around them, I feel like a total outsider. Also, most of my cousins are way older than me. They're already married, have kids, or work on farms. The only one is the only one close to my age is Kevin. He's a couple of years older than me, but he's pretty chill, so we usually end up sticking together by default at these family gatherings. He knows I don't really fit in, so he always tries to hang out with me in a way that doesn't make it awkward. We arrived at Uncle John's house on Friday night. Since I'm an only child, it was just me and my parents traveling. I was so tired from the trip that I went to bed almost immediately. The next morning, Kevin and I spent a good while in the basement playing pool.
Starting point is 00:19:10 Neither of us is particularly good at it, but it was way better than sitting upstairs, where the whole family had already gathered and the usual party chaos was underway. We stayed downstairs to avoid all that noise. Since there was no TV, Kevin played music from his phone, and we started talking about some family gossip that isn't even worth repeating. While we played, Kevin started talking to me about the forest behind Uncle John's house. He told me it stretched for miles and that hardly anyone ever went deep enough to see the cool places hidden inside. He used words like magical and talked about the beauty of solitude.
Starting point is 00:19:47 I just nodded. Nature isn't really my thing, but it was clear he was passionate about it. I don't know how he pulled it off, but later that same day, he convinced me to go for a walk in the woods. Like I said, I'm not adventurous at all, but boredom was getting to me. So I agreed to go. Of course we told Uncle John before heading out. He's a really laid-back guy and always lets the younger ones do whatever they want. Something I wish my own parents understood.
Starting point is 00:20:16 Kevin took the lead the moment we stepped outside, heading across the backyard and into the tree line like he already knew the way, which he probably did. The woods were thick but not completely wild. Kevin followed a kind of natural trail. It wasn't very late yet, so I wasn't worried about it getting dark, but the deeper we went, the more I started wondering how we'd find our way back. After walking for about 20 minutes, I asked if he was sure he knew where we were, and he just laughed.
Starting point is 00:20:44 He said he knew that forest like the back of his hand, that he'd been exploring it since he was a kid. We went on maybe another 20 minutes when suddenly we both stopped at the same time. From somewhere ahead of us we heard a loud thud like something heavy-striking wood. It wasn't an animal sound or a branch-breaking. It was rhythmic. Pause, then another thud, and then again. It sounded like someone hitting a tree with a mallet or a hammer. That's the best way I can describe it.
Starting point is 00:21:15 Kevin looked at me, and his expression made it clear he was also trying to figure out what it was. It didn't sound super close, but it was loud enough to hear clearly. He said maybe it was a hunter, that it was possible, but his face said something else. He was uneasy. Eventually the sound stopped. I asked if he wanted to go back, but he shook his head. His curiosity had taken over, and I have to admit, I was kind of curious too. So we kept walking in the direction of the noise, fully alert.
Starting point is 00:21:48 We had only gone a few more minutes when Kevin suddenly stopped and threw his arm out in front of me. I froze thinking he had seen someone, but instead he pointed up. At first I didn't understand what I was looking at. But then I saw it. Three crosses nailed upside down into three separate trees, side by side, way up high, at least 15 or 20 feet off the ground. There was no way anyone could have put them up there without a ladder. Before we could even turn around, I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. I whipped my head around into my horror there was someone standing there. He looked like a lumberjack, thick beard flannel shirt and a dark intense stare kevin stepped in front of me partially blocking my view of the guy
Starting point is 00:22:35 the man kept staring right at me and said you shouldn't be here kevin immediately apologized and told him we were leaving and that's exactly what we did the man didn't move while we walked away he just stood there watching us in complete silence my hands were trembling we walked the entire way back without saying a word. I had never felt so tense in my life. We kept looking behind us over and over again to make sure we weren't being followed, even though there was no real way to be sure. When we got back to the house, the first thing we did was tell Uncle John everything. Like I said before, he's a kind guy and knows all his neighbors. So I felt sick to my stomach when he told us that nobody he knew matched the description of the man we saw in the woods. He asked us several times if we were sure we
Starting point is 00:23:25 hadn't been followed, and we assured him we hadn't. There wasn't much more we could do. Someone even suggested going out their arm to check things out, but Uncle John didn't want to risk any kind of confrontation. He didn't want to take a chance on someone following us back to the house. Kevin and I went back to the basement to calm down a bit, and the rest of the family continued doing their thing, probably getting ready for the Easter celebration. That experience affected me more than I let on. I went to bed early that night just to stop thinking about what it happened. But because of that, I woke up way earlier than usual. I checked my phone and saw it was just after 5 a.m. The sun was just starting to rise and everything was still dark. I tried to go back to
Starting point is 00:24:12 sleep, but I couldn't. So I decided to start the day. I went up to Uncle John's study on the third floor. It has a huge window that overlooks the backyard. As I walked past, I was a little bit of it something caught my attention. There was a faint flicker at the edge of the woods. It looked like a small shimmering light, like a campfire, not a flashlight. I stared at it for about 30 seconds, trying to figure out what I was seeing. Curiosity got the better of me. I had to know what it was. I walked downstairs and stepped onto the back porch, and when I got a clear view, I had to stifle a scream. There were at least three figures standing right at the tree line, each holding a torch. They weren't walking. They weren't moving at all. They were just standing there, staring directly
Starting point is 00:25:01 at the house, staring at me. I ran straight to Uncle John's room and woke him up, telling him what I saw. Without asking a single question, he grabbed his rifle, threw on some pants, and told me to stay inside. He stepped out onto the back porch and scanned the area with his eyes. By that point, the figures had already retreated back into the woods. Without hesitation, my uncle raised his rifle and fired three shots into the air. That woke up the whole house. The next 20 minutes were pure chaos. I'll just say this.
Starting point is 00:25:36 I can't imagine a worse way to spend Easter morning. The celebration was ruined. Everyone was on edge the rest of the day. Eventually, it was time to head home, and I won't lie. I wasn't even a little bit sad to leave. It's been about nine months since then. Uncle John says he hasn't seen or heard anything strange since. But still, I wouldn't want to live in that house
Starting point is 00:25:59 knowing there are people like that lurking in the woods. If anything else happens, I promise I'll send an update.
