Hello everyone and welcome back to horror stories. I know many of you use these episodes to fall asleep so before you drift off,
Starting point is 00:01:13 I'd love it if you could leave a comment letting me know where you're listening from around the world. Also, don't forget to like and subscribe if you're enjoying the episodes. Story one, I've lived my entire life in Georgia with my parents. One Friday night while we were having dinner, my dad shared some really important news. He said, my company offered me an excellent position. They want me to take charge of their operations in Florida
Starting point is 00:01:43 in a city called Tampa. If I accept, we'd all move together, and the company would cover the moving expenses. They'd even help us buy a new house if we wanted. My dad mentioned that the news had caught him by surprise, but he wanted us to think about it carefully. He said it could be a fresh start, especially since we hadn't taken a vacation in years,
Starting point is 00:02:05 let alone to Florida. So he believed it was worth trying. My mom and I looked at each other and nodded. She asked how long he had to decide whether to accept the job. He replied that he had two weeks and that if he said yes, the next step would be finding and buying a house in Tampa. A week later, we had another family meeting and everyone agreed to move to Tampa, Florida. I could feel my father's happiness.
Starting point is 00:02:32 It was clear he really wanted that job. Soon after, my parents organized a trip to visit Tampa. Tampa and explore possible homes. They usually went on long weekends and came back on Mondays, telling me about the properties they found interesting. Unfortunately, it took them over a month to find a suitable house, but the weight was worth it. On their next visit, they took me with them so I could give my opinion. The house had four bedrooms, an outdoor jacuzzi, and a double garage. The gardens weren't huge, though the backyard was a bit bigger than the front. Inside, the the house was modern and spacious. My mom especially loved the kitchen. It was twice as big as the one
Starting point is 00:03:13 we had in Georgia. She's an excellent cook and her food is the best I've ever tasted, even compared to restaurant dishes. I really liked the house too, and after some tough negotiations, my dad managed to buy it. That's when a very busy period began. We had to put our old house up for sale while sorting through everything we'd accumulated over the years. Dad insisted that we should be strict and only keep what was necessary. No filling the new house with stuff we only keep out of habit, he said. It was a bit hard at first, but I ended up with 15 boxes of things to get rid of. Some were donated to charity and others, those that were broken, went straight to the trash. Dad got rid of ten boxes himself, while Mom only had three. Once we finished that,
Starting point is 00:04:01 we soon received a good offer for the house, which Dad accepted without hesitation. We set the moving date and in just six weeks we were in our new home in Tampa surrounded by boxes and eating takeout for about 10 days we survived on quick dinners and takeout meals until we finally got the kitchen organized over time things returned to normal though we noticed dad spent much more time at work learning new systems and getting to know his team he seemed to enjoy the challenge meanwhile I found a remote job I could do from home on my computer it was much more comfortable than my old office job in Georgia, since I could take breaks whenever I wanted
Starting point is 00:04:42 and even soak in our big jacuzzi. It felt more like a hot pool with warm water and massage jets. Afterward, I'd usually have lunch on the patio before returning to work. Everything felt so different from the life we had before. We had two neighboring houses, one on the right and one on the left. The house on the right was empty, with a four-sale sign in the front yard. From the windows, it was clear there were no furnishings inside and no car was ever parked in the driveway. The house on the left however was occupied, but its owner never tried to talk to us since we'd moved in two weeks earlier. We thought he lived alone as we always saw him coming and going in the afternoons, unaccompanied. A couple of times I waved to greet him, but he just stared at me for several long seconds
Starting point is 00:05:29 and then looked away without responding. My mother noticed and said, Some people are like that, honey. Don't worry. Some folks see you wave or say hello but prefer to ignore it. Maybe it's just bad manners. Or perhaps on his planet, not saying high as normal. I tried not to think much about it, though something about his behavior unsettled me. At night around 11 p.m. while I was in my room,
Starting point is 00:05:56 I would often see a flashlight moving in his backyard. I'd look out the window that faced the rear of his property and wonder, what could he be doing at this hour? several times I watched the light move toward the back of the yard and then suddenly turned directly toward my window in those moments I'd quickly duck down and hold my breath my heart pounding I couldn't understand how he knew I was watching my room was always dark and I barely peaked out when I looked again the light would already be gone with no sign of him I told my mom about it but she calmly replied honey
Starting point is 00:06:32 It's none of our business what he does, as long as he doesn't bother us, focus on your own things. Still something inside me told me that man wasn't normal. One day while relaxing in the jacuzzi under a clear blue sky, I noticed movement along the fence that separated our properties. I turned to look more closely and saw a ladder leaning against the fence. At the top stood a man wearing a gas mask, staring straight at me. He wore red rubber gloves and a kind of black plastic. protective suit. I stopped floating and stood up, looking directly at him so he'd know I'd seen him.
Starting point is 00:07:09 Then I shouted, can I help you with something? He didn't answer. He just kept staring. Then he did something truly disturbing. He lifted up a black cat from behind the fence. The animal wasn't moving. It looked dead. Then he pointed at me with his free hand and made a throat-cutting gesture. After that, he climbed down the ladder and disappeared, taking it with him under the fence. I couldn't believe what I had just seen. Who in their right mind would do something like that, I thought. I ran up to my room to get a better look at his yard and try to understand what was happening. But when I looked, the yard was completely empty. I wanted to tell my parents, but they were away for the weekend, so I was alone at home. That night I decided to do
Starting point is 00:07:56 some investigating on my own. I grabbed a small flashlight from Dad's toolbox in the garage and headed to the back of the yard. I knew one of the fence panels was loose. Dad had mentioned he planned to fix it soon. I carefully pushed the panel aside, opened a space large enough to pass through, and crouched down to slip into his property. Now I could see his entire backyard clearly. There was a large shed, the same one I'd often seen from my window. I moved slowly toward it, trying to stay low so I wouldn't be seen. As I advanced, I noticed the ground sing. I saw the ground slightly beneath my feet, with fresh mounds of dirt scattered across the yard. I walked carefully between them until I reached the shed door. It wasn't locked, so I turned the knob.
Starting point is 00:08:44 It opened easily. As soon as I opened the door, a horrible stench hit me. I turned on the flashlight and began to illuminate the inside. The first thing I saw was a large table in the center, with a thick wooden board on top, like a butcher's block. It was stained with fresh blood, even on the edges. I moved the light to the floor and saw large red stains around and beneath the table. On the back wall hung an entire row of knives and machetes gleaming under the beam of my flashlight. Then the light fell on something that made me hold my breath, a row of meat hooks, and hanging from them were small cats and dogs, all dead. This guy is completely sick, I thought in horror. On the rear wall there were also several pentagrams drawn. At first I thought they were
Starting point is 00:09:32 painted with red paint, but as I got closer, I realized it was blood. There was no doubt. The man was performing some kind of dark ritual, sacrificing innocent animals. And the most terrifying thing was that this monster was my neighbor. Suddenly I saw a light approaching from the shed's door. It can't be. He's coming back. I thought in panic. I quickly turned off my flashlight and crouched out of the shed, closing the door behind me silently. I crawled through the bushes to the loose fence panel, opened it carefully, slipped back into our yard, and closed it again. I ran as fast as I could to the house, went in through the patio door, and locked it. I grabbed my phone from the table and dialed 911, shaking. But before they answered, I looked up and saw the man walking through our
Starting point is 00:10:25 yard, holding a butcher knife in one hand. This time he was dressed entirely in black. When the operator picked up, I screamed desperately. There's someone with a weapon trying to break into my house. As I spoke, I heard the sound of the patio glass shattering. I ran to the front door, still on the call, and managed to give the police our exact address before bolting out into the street. That's when I realized the car keys were hanging by the back door, right where he had come in. so I had no choice but to run on foot. I sprinted down the street, and when I looked back, I saw his figure standing in the doorway watching me.
Starting point is 00:11:05 Suddenly, a police car came speeding around the corner and nearly hit me. I waved my arms to stop them and explained through sobs what was happening. The officers entered the property to arrest him, but the man attacked them with the knife, injuring one of them. Finally, the police had to shoot him, and he died right there in the front yard. Later, during the investigation, the officers discovered more than 40 animal graves in his backyard. They also found ritual books and strange objects related to occult practices. In addition, they uncovered information about an open case, the disappearance of his mother, which had occurred four years earlier.
Starting point is 00:11:45 That episode left a deep mark on me. Living next to strange neighbors might seem harmless, but sometimes you never truly know what kind of people are around you until it's already too. late. Story 2. For more than 10 years, I was truly happy with my wife. We lived in New York all that time, and before that, we had met her to work meeting. After a few months of seeing each other on different projects, we began dating. We both worked for the same company, which specialized in advertising and product sales, though in different departments and offices. After one year of dating, we decided to move in together. A year later, we both got better jobs with higher salaries, which allowed us to buy a house and start paying a mortgage.
Starting point is 00:12:35 Six months later, another year passed and we decided to get married. Four years after that, we moved into a larger home, complete with a swimming pool and a big garden. From the very beginning of our relationship, we had agreed not to have children. Both of us wanted to focus on our careers, and we knew having kids would completely change those plans. We led an active, sophisticated life, constantly traveling for both work and pleasure. We loved our routine of international flights and made sure to take at least two vacations abroad each year. Everything was going well. Until one day while I was in Florida for work, promoting products for a major company, something happened that changed my life forever. I had been attending a business convention for two days. The event included
Starting point is 00:13:24 catered lunches and everything seemed fine. However, on the third day, several attendees began to feel sick, including some of the main speakers. By the end of the day, the convention center manager took the microphone and announced that the event had to be canceled. He explained that a stomach virus was spreading among attendees, and as a precaution the venue would be temporarily closed. He added that health authorities had been notified and that sampling inspection and deep cleaning would be conducted. As soon as the announcement ended, I left. I gathered my team and told them to return to the hotel,
Starting point is 00:14:01 take showers, change into clean clothes, and wash what they had worn with hot water, putting the used items in separate bags. I advised them to avoid any possible contamination, and if they could, to isolate for a few days. Luckily, no one on my team got sick, though I knew several delegates who did. Some so badly they had to call.
Starting point is 00:14:22 call a doctor. I instructed my team to book the next available flight home. When I returned to my room, I did the same, showered, bagged, bagged, and changed. Then I tried to call my wife, but the call went straight to voicemail, so I called her office instead. Her assistant answered and said that Rachel had taken the week off for vacation. Vacation? That's strange, I thought. She hadn't mentioned anything about taking time off before I left on my trip. I decided not to leave a message and simply booked the next flight back to New York, which departed the following morning. When I landed in New York, I picked up my car from the airport parking lot and drove home. The roads were clear, so I got there faster than expected. As I turned on to our street, something made me frown. A black
Starting point is 00:15:12 Audi was parked right in front of our house. Across the street was Rachel's Red Jaguar. I parked to them and stared at the Audi. As far as I remembered, we didn't know anyone who drove that kind of car. My mind began filling with possibilities, but I tried to stay calm. I unlocked the front door and stepped inside. The house was silent, until my eyes landed on the clothes scattered across the floor, Rachel's clothes, and among them, a man's jacket, a knot formed in my stomach. I ran upstairs is my heart pounding in my chest. When I burst into our bedroom, there she was, Rachel in bed with a stranger. She screamed in shock, and the man jumped up, fumbling for his pants while stammering an apology. I didn't hear a word. All I saw was red. I lunged at him, grabbed him by the neck,
Starting point is 00:16:04 and dragged him to the door, throwing him out of the room. He stumbled down the stairs and bolted out the front door, running to the Audi and driving away with screeching tires. Rachel sat on the bed, trembling, clutching the sheets to cover herself. I stared at her, rage pain and betrayal burning inside me. Why did you ruin everything like this? I shouted. She started crying, begging me to listen, but there was nothing left to say. Deep down, I knew our marriage had ended in that moment. Three months later, we were divorced.
Starting point is 00:16:38 We sold the house and split the money. I quit my job at the old company. I needed to leave New York, and everything that required. reminded me of Rachel behind. I used my contacts to find a new job in Virginia, and soon after, I found a smaller house with three bedrooms, a modest yard, and a tiny pool, though big enough for one person. The real estate agent told me the owner wanted to sell quickly, so I made an offer that was accepted right away. That was perfect since I'd been living in a hotel for three weeks. I coordinated the move from New York, and six weeks later, on a Saturday at 10 a.m., I received
Starting point is 00:17:16 the keys. The moving truck arrived on time, and by 3 p.m. they were gone. I was alone, surrounded by boxes stacked everywhere, sitting on the living room couch. From the window, I looked out at the trees in the backyard, trying to process my new life. At five in the afternoon, I went outside with a cup of coffee. The pool water was green and clearly unclean, so I knew I'd have to call someone for maintenance. A shame, I had wanted to swim that very night. Tired from the moving day, I made a quick microwave dinner, opened a bottle of red wine, and ate in front of the TV. After a couple of glasses, I fell asleep on the couch. Suddenly I woke up with a start. I didn't know why. Everything was silent. I sat up, confused, and told.
Starting point is 00:18:05 I noticed the motion light in the yard had turned on. I went to the large living room window. The light illuminated everything, the grass, the trees in the back, and the pool water reflecting the glow. But then I saw something strange. The water was moving. Gentle ripples crossed the surface
Starting point is 00:18:23 as if something or someone was in it. I thought maybe an animal had wandered into the yard and fallen into the pool, triggering the sensor light. So I decided to go check. I opened the patio doors and walked toward the pool. There were small puddles of water along the edge, as if something wet had climbed out. But when I looked into the pool, the water was still again, barely shifting with the night breeze.
Starting point is 00:18:48 No sign of an animal. Still, those puddles didn't make sense. Maybe it got out and ran away, I thought. I went back inside, locked up, and went to bed. I don't know how much time had passed when my bed began to shake. What the hell? I muttered. I turned on the bedside lamp and looked around. No one was there. Everything was calm. Then I heard it, a splash from the yard. I ran to the window and right then the motion light came on
Starting point is 00:19:18 again. From above I could see the pool clearly and a small head surfacing in the water. Probably some neighborhood kid pulling a prank, I thought. I dressed quickly, ran downstairs and dashed into the yard. The pool was churning with ripples, but no one was there, only more puddles near the edge, this time forming a faint wet trail across the grass. I followed the damp path with my flashlight until it faded away at the back of the property. Nothing made sense. As I turned to head back, I heard a sound, a scraping noise like something clawing at wood or metal. I froze and turned in place scanning the dark yard but saw nothing. The sound stopped. for a few seconds, then returned, louder, more frantic. That's when I realized where it was coming
Starting point is 00:20:07 from, the old well at the back of the property. I ran toward it. The well was covered with a wooden lid nailed down with thick metal spikes. I crouched to listen, and the noise returned now joined by a faint, trembling voice. Please, it whispered. My heart raced. I tried to lift the cover with my hands, but it wouldn't budge. So I ran to the garage. grabbed a crowbar and a flashlight and hurried back. The scratching was now desperate, almost panicked. I wedged the crowbar under one side and pushed with all my strength. The wood creaked, then suddenly split in two flying apart. At that instant a nauseating stench rose from the well. I covered my mouth with my arm and stepped back. When I looked again, I saw the underside of the lid,
Starting point is 00:20:56 covered in deep claw marks hundreds of them, as if something or someone had tried to claw their way out. A shiver ran down my spine. What happened here? Who or what was trapped in there, I thought. I turned on the flashlight and pointed it downward. The well was deep, but the beam reached the bottom. I could make out an old teddy bear, some pieces of clothing, and something white floating in the water. As I watched, I suddenly felt a little bit of.
Starting point is 00:21:26 presence beside me. I turned slowly, and a small icy hand grabbed mine. I screamed, but within a second, no one was there. I spun the flashlight in every direction, but the yard was empty. Shaking, I ran back to the house and called the police. I told them I thought I had found a body in the well. The next morning, around 10 a.m., officers and a forensic team arrived. After several hours of work, they confirmed my suspicions. They had found the remains of a little girl, estimated to be around 11 years old. Days later, investigators told me what they had discovered. It turned out that the previous owners of the house had been foster parents who had cared for a girl for two years, until one night she disappeared without a trace. The foster father had claimed
Starting point is 00:22:14 the girl was kidnapped, but police never found evidence or suspects, and the case went cold. Four months after her disappearance, both foster parents were found dead in their bedroom, victims of an overdose. During that investigation, the girl's skull was found with a fracture on the left side, leading police to believe she had been fatally struck and her body thrown into the well. However, records showed that the well had already been sealed at the time of her disappearance, so it was never inspected. One of the officers asked me, why did you go to the well in the middle of the night? I stayed quiet for a few seconds, thinking of how to answer without sounding insane. Finally, I said, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:22:56 I just had a feeling. Something told me there was something strange down there. The officer raised an eyebrow, then nodded and said, All right, let's leave it at that. From that day on, nothing strange ever happened in the house again, but there's one thing I did do. I left the well uncovered. Story three.
Starting point is 00:23:23 When I was very young, I went through something truly terrifying. There was a gun in the back of my parents' truck, and by accident it went off. The bullet passed through my mother's wrist and then struck my left foot. Luckily, I was able to keep my foot, and in time I made a full recovery. Now let's jump ahead 34 years to March 2018. I was dealing with a severe ear infection, the pain so intense I could barely sleep. My fiancé Steve worked in construction, and because of his exhausting schedule, he usually took sleeping pills at night.
Starting point is 00:23:58 That Thursday we went to bed early since he had to get up at dawn for work. At last, after several sleepless nights, I fell into a deep sleep, but suddenly a noise woke me. At first I thought Steve had just gotten up to use the bathroom, so I closed my eyes again. Seconds later, I heard shouting.
Starting point is 00:24:18 Half asleep and confused, I couldn't make sense of it. Then the yelling grew louder. I jumped out of bed, barefoot and in the dark, and recognized Steve's voice. He was shouting. For a moment, I thought the police had come into the house or something serious was happening outside. But the first words I clearly made out were, Give me the money. That froze me. What? The police don't say that, I thought, horrified. Steve was completely naked running toward the attackers. He slammed our bedroom door hard, trying to keep the intruders from getting to where I was.
Starting point is 00:24:56 On the other side, the men were forcing the door, shoving violently, while Steve braced it with his whole body. Then I heard gunshots. They were shooting at us. I saw Steve darting side to side, quick as a cat, dodging the bullets and ramming his weight against the door to protect me. Amid the chaos, I heard him yell, grab the gun, grab the gun.
Starting point is 00:25:18 For a moment I didn't understand. my mind was still foggy with sleep and fear. How am I supposed to take the gun from them, I thought. Then I realized he meant our gun. I ran, flipped on the light, grabbed the gun, and handed it to Steve. But by then the intruders, those bastards, had already bolted out the back door the same way they'd come in. We later found out our scatterbrained housemate had forgotten to lock that door. I was shaking almost in a panic.
Starting point is 00:25:48 Two of the six bullets had grazed Steve, but miraculously, none caused serious injury. I spent an entire month tending his wounds and helping him recover. After that, we adopted a dog and installed a full home security system. Even so, the fear never completely left. Even now, some nights I still wedge a chair under the doorknob before I sleep. It's been nearly two years since I last slept well. I keep thinking how lucky we were that night. Normally with his pills Steve would have been out cold and I would have been the first to wake,
Starting point is 00:26:21 maybe too late. But by some inexplicable miracle, he heard the noises before I did. That night Steve saved our lives. He acted with a courage I'll never forget. In fact, he was supposed to be in Florida for work until the following week, but he decided to come home early. Sometimes I think that if he hadn't, I wouldn't be here to tell this story. I can't help feeling like there's some kind of curse in my life. First, my mother was hurt by a bullet when I was a child, and now my fiancé too. It scares me to imagine the people I love getting shot just for being near me. That thought haunts me. To the two armed men who broke into my home and stole my sense of safety, I have only this to say. I truly hope karma catches up with you.
