Starting point is 00:01:18 Also, don't forget to like and subscribe if you're enjoying the episodes. Story 1. I was 20 years old when all of this happened. I'm 27 now, but I still remember it with a clarity that makes it. feel like it happened last week. Back then I worked part-time in the cosmetic section of a pharmacy. I was a student, so I almost always got the late afternoon evening shifts. It wasn't exactly scary working there at night. The store was in a fairly safe, middle-class neighborhood, and there were always at least four employees in the building. Even so, thefts were increasing,
Starting point is 00:02:05 Even in nice areas, someone always shows up trying to steal perfume or makeup. And our store apparently was an easy target. The company took it seriously. They hired a security team to watch at night, especially the cosmetic section, which was where the most shoplifting happened. That part of the store was somewhat tucked away and usually only had one person assigned to it. almost always a woman. So having a guard nearby at first was actually reassuring. I worked four afternoons a week,
Starting point is 00:02:43 and the other girl on the team covered the remaining days. Our schedules rarely changed, and for a while everything felt completely normal. There were several guards who rotated, but most nights it was the same one. I'll call him Mike. He looked like he was in his 20s, friendly, good-looking, and honestly easy to deal with.
Starting point is 00:03:08 He stayed near my counter, chatted with me between customers, and kept an eye on everything. I've always been pretty talkative. I don't have much of a filter, and sometimes I share more than I should about myself, so I didn't think much of having normal conversations with him. After a few weeks, I noticed that absolutely all of my ships,
Starting point is 00:03:32 lined up with Mike. One night I even joked about it and he laughed and said, Yeah, looks like you got stuck with me. They sent the others to different locations. I didn't question it. It sounded reasonable, but on one of my nights off, I stopped by the store to buy something and saw that there was a different guard covering the shift with my co-worker Sarah. I greeted them normally and said something like, Oh, I guess Mike has the night off today. The other guard looked confused and said, Mike only works Sunday through Wednesday.
Starting point is 00:04:12 My stomach dropped. Those were exactly my days. I remember smiling like nothing was wrong, but I felt a knot in my chest. Still I let it go. Coincidences happen, right? Until I started running into Mike outside of work, and it stopped feeling accidental.
Starting point is 00:04:32 One time I saw him at the movie theater in my town, I knew he lived 20 minutes away, in a place that had its own movie theater showing the same films. He just smiled and said, What are the odds, huh? Another time, I accepted an extra shift and he showed up halfway through my shift, in uniform,
Starting point is 00:04:55 saying he was on his break and that he now filled his prescriptions at our store because he liked the staff better. When I asked the pharmacy tech later, she told me he didn't have any prescriptions there. That's when I started to feel truly uneasy. Then came the night that completely changed the way I saw him. Mike had just gotten back from a road trip with some friends
Starting point is 00:05:18 and asked if I wanted to see photos from the trip. I said, sure. It seemed harmless. He handed me his phone and said, keep swiping to the left so i did landscapes group photos more panoramas and one swipe too many a close-up photo of him naked i froze for a second handed the phone back stammering something like oh huh i think i went too far i expected him to be embarrassed but he only smiled an unsettling calculated smile and said I was hoping you'd see that. My stomach turned. I immediately pretended I had work to do and avoided talking to him for the rest of the night.
Starting point is 00:06:09 The next morning I called his company. I tried to be diplomatic. I said that maybe he was a little too interested in me and that I felt uncomfortable. I didn't want to ruin his job or create drama. I only asked if they could assign him to another location. I kept telling myself I was overreacting. That maybe I'd unintentionally encouraged him. The next night I arrived and saw a new guard at the counter.
Starting point is 00:06:38 I felt relief, truly grateful that they'd listen to me. But when we closed and walked out to our cars, I heard an engine start up in the farthest corner of the empty parking lot. I looked and recognized the shape of the car instantly. It was Mike's. I'd seen it parked there dozens of times. My pulse shot up. The car idled for a few seconds and then drove off.
Starting point is 00:07:06 When I got to my car, I found a note under my windshield wiper. It said, I'm so sorry they moved me. I'll try to come back soon. Let's get together. His phone number was written underneath. I remember sitting there gripping the steering wheel with my stomach and knots. The next morning I called his supervisor again, and this time I told them everything. My store manager got involved too.
Starting point is 00:07:34 He was an older man, very protective. When he heard the story, he said, No way. And immediately contacted the security company, telling them Mike was not allowed to come on to the property ever again. For a few weeks, everything was quiet. I didn't tell my boyfriend right away. The relationship was very new and I didn't want to worry him.
Starting point is 00:08:02 Then one rainy afternoon, while I was setting up a new display, I saw him again. The big windows reflected the inside more than the outside, but when a car honked I looked up on instinct. And in that faint reflection I saw Mike standing right behind me, just standing there and watching me. I jumped. I'm sure I gasped, and I quickly went to the other end of the store where my manager was. He ran back to check, but by the time he got there, Mike was gone. We later confirmed it on the cameras. He walked up, stood there for a minute, and left.
Starting point is 00:08:44 When my manager called the security company again, they told him Mike had quit the week before. I wanted to believe that was the end of it. But one Sunday night I had to drive home on my own for the first time in weeks. My parents were out of town and my boyfriend had other plans. After closing, I said goodbye to my coworkers and walked to my car, which was parked near the river at the edge of the lot, the darkest spot possible. As I got closer, I heard someone speaking quietly. my heart stopped when I recognized the voice. It was Mike. He sounded angry, almost desperate.
Starting point is 00:09:30 Why would you do this to me? Why did you make me believe you loved me? Luckily, the pharmacist who had closed with me hadn't left yet. He was taking out the trash behind the building. I shouted, Jim, wait, and ran toward him, almost tripping. I could bear. I could bear. fairly say, call 911. The police arrived within minutes, but Mike had already vanished. He simply disappeared. I never saw him again after that night. Sometimes I still wonder what would have happened if the pharmacist hadn't been there. Story 2. This happened just a couple of weeks ago, and honestly, I've been debating whether to even tell it. At first, I convinced myself I was overreacting, that it probably wasn't anything. But the more I replay it, the less sure I am.
Starting point is 00:10:32 I work in a small corporate complex made up of several single-story office buildings, maybe nine or ten in total. During the day there's enough activity that you don't feel alone. But on my side of the building, there's a strip of dense woods that runs behind the parking lot, and as soon as gets dark, the whole place takes on a strangely empty, isolated feeling. If you look carefully, you can make out a few houses through the trees, but there aren't any streetlights nearby. So after seven or eight, it's all shadows and silence. By the time most people leave, there are barely a few cars left, and mine is usually one of them. I'm 25 years old, about 5 feet 3, inches, and I work alone until close to one o'clock in the morning. So yeah, although I try to act tough,
Starting point is 00:11:30 being the last one there can make you nervous sometimes. That night started like any other. I went out to my car on brake to pick up food and realized I'd left my phone plugged in under my desk. I went back inside and as I passed the security monitor at the front desk, I saw a truck pull into the parking lot. It parked at the far end right by the tree line. I remember thinking, who shows up at night, but I let it go, assuming someone had forgotten something inside. I grabbed my phone, talked for a minute with a co-worker, used the bathroom, and when I came out, the truck was gone. I didn't think much of it. I went to pick up food, parked farther down in the lot, to eat before going back in and started scrolling on my phone. That's when I noticed headlights
Starting point is 00:12:28 turning on from the corner of the parking lot, the same corner where that truck had been earlier. It started rolling toward me, slow at first. I kept pretending I was looking at my phone while watching out of the corner of my eye. The truck stopped right next to me, so close that I wouldn't have been able to open my door without scraping his. I started to feel my heart pounding in my chest. His door opened and the interior light came on. Then I saw him clearly. A huge guy, probably over six feet tall, easily around 300 pounds, wearing dark clothes. He raised his hand like he wanted me to stop or roll down my window. Instead, I threw my car into reverse. so fast the tire squealed.
Starting point is 00:13:21 The moment I moved, he jogged around toward my side, and all I could think was how easily he could have grabbed me. I didn't wait to find out what he wanted. I just took off. I checked my mirrors and saw him going back to his truck, but I didn't know if he was going to follow me. My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold the steering wheel. I didn't know the area well beyond the highway that leads to the office,
Starting point is 00:13:51 so I turned quickly to the right into a residential neighborhood, thinking I could lose him if he tried to come after me. After a couple of turns, I realized he wasn't behind me anymore. I parked a couple of blocks away, pulled out my phone, and called my mom. She didn't answer. Then I called a co-worker who works the same shift and told her everything. She sounded calm and said maybe I was reacting too strongly, that the man probably just wanted to tell me something. She told me to call her when I got back and that she would walk in
Starting point is 00:14:29 with me since I was so shaken. Eventually, I started driving back toward the building, trying to convince myself I was just being paranoid. But when I pulled into the parking lot, I saw that truck again, parked on the other side of the lot, half hidden behind another car. The lights were off, but I knew it was him. My stomach dropped. I sat in my car for maybe 15 minutes, trying to rationalize everything, telling myself that technically nothing had happened. Finally, I called my co-worker and told her I was going to come in. She met me at the door and told me he had come by while. I was gone. Apparently, he had banged on the door and claimed he was contracted security. He told her some guys had been breaking bottles in the parking lot and that he had seen her friend
Starting point is 00:15:26 referring to me. She said she didn't want to open the door, but he kind of pushed the door when she cracked it, handed her a cheap-looking business card, and then left after she put him in his place for scaring women at that hour. When she showed me the card, I got a strange sinking feeling. The logo looked fake, like something printed at home, and the company name didn't sound familiar at all. But what unsettled me most was that he knew exactly which office I worked in. From outside, there's no way to tell which offices are occupied at night
Starting point is 00:16:05 because all the lobby lights stay on for the cameras. My car wasn't even parked directly out front. if he really was a security guard, how would he have known I was the one inside? And if he was just checking, why show up, lurk around for 15 minutes, and disappear as soon as someone confronted him? The next morning we told our boss everything. He contacted the property owner, who confirmed that they had hired a security company, but not the one on the card. Their guards only worked weekends. All of this had happened on a Wednesday night. I don't know who that man was or what he wanted,
Starting point is 00:16:49 but I'm glad I didn't find out. I haven't seen that truck since, but every time I have to stay late, I can't help looking out toward the parking lot, half expecting those headlights to turn on again. Story 3 At the beginning of this year, I decided to take my family on a short caravan holiday
Starting point is 00:17:16 before leaving to work in Greece. I'd done seasons there before, and I was leaving for five months. The idea was a relaxed, cheap break, just one simple week of family time before everything sped up again. The first few days went exactly as planned. We played bingo at night, celebrated whales winning the Rugby Grand Slam, drank too much, laughed a lot.
Starting point is 00:17:45 That kind of easy family. family week you almost never get as an adult. On Monday night, during bingo at the campsite club, I noticed one of the site's security guards. He caught my attention because he was the type I normally find attractive, beard, glasses, a calm vibe. I even joked about him with my mom and she laughed. Later that night he came over to our table, introduced himself, and chattered with everyone about general things. The park, his job, the usual light conversation. He seemed confident and
Starting point is 00:18:24 friendly. Nothing was weird at first, but he stayed near our table for a long time, hovering between conversations and holding eye contact with me a little too much. I put it down to awkwardness, or maybe my own nerves. When we left, he was standing by the exit and said something like, Ah, don't go yet. I've got two days off. I won't see you. It struck me as odd because we'd barely exchanged small talk, but I didn't think too hard about it.
Starting point is 00:18:58 My mom thought I liked him and intentionally left me behind for a moment so I could talk to him, but I didn't feel comfortable being alone. I just smiled, wished him good night, and walked away quickly, noticing his eyes following me, as I crossed the car park. Two days passed without seeing him, and I'd basically forgotten about it
Starting point is 00:19:21 until Wednesday, when he returned to his shift. He spotted us right away and walked straight over, winked at me, and leaned in very close while he spoke, resting his elbows on our table. His face ended up dangerously close to mine. I excused myself, saying I wanted to play with my nephew in the arcade area. From where I stood at the bowling machine, I could see him watching me through the glass of one of the games, still, staring. That familiar nod of anxiety hit me hard. I went back to sit with my parents, and he started walking past every few minutes, glancing over each time. I waited until he was out of sight, then told my parents I didn't feel well. and went back to the caravan early.
Starting point is 00:20:17 When my parents came back later that night, they told me he'd kept approaching the table, asking where I'd gone, if I was okay, and if I needed him to go check on me. He even handed my mom a piece of paper with his number on it, asking her to give it to me. I was mortified.
Starting point is 00:20:38 Who tries to flirt through someone's mother? I laughed it off, but deep down it gave me goosebumps. Thursday was our last day and I decided not to go out at all. I stayed in the caravan, packed, and looked after my nephew while my parents went for a walk.
Starting point is 00:20:59 I just wanted to avoid that guy. That night was when everything became truly disturbing. Somehow he got my phone number. Around midnight, WhatsApp messages started. it coming in from an unknown number. It was him. At first I tried to be polite, thinking maybe he'd pulled my contact from the park's records or something. I told him I was packing and that we were heading home the next day, but his replies quickly turned flirty and inappropriate. I put my phone
Starting point is 00:21:33 face down and tried to ignore it. Sometime after 3 a.m., a noise outside my window woke me up, a soft scraping sound and muffled footsteps. I went rigid, holding my breath. My mum had left her curtain completely open, and the light from the living area cast enough of a glow that threw a gap in my own curtain, I could see. He was there, the same security guard right outside my window, peering around like he was looking for me.
Starting point is 00:22:08 My heart was pounding so hard I thought he'd hear it. I didn't move. I didn't breathe. I just stared. My phone screen kept lighting up again and again with WhatsApp notifications. I didn't dare unlock it, but I could read parts of the messages and the preview, things like, I know where you are, and come to the window. He sent nude photos of himself, said disgusting things about what he wanted me to do, and wouldn't stop calling. I stayed completely still, frozen for what felt like hours. Eventually, exhaustion must have taken over, because the next thing I remember is my mom waking me up around 9 a.m., telling me she'd just opened the living room curtains and seen him outside. He had been there all night. By the time we
Starting point is 00:23:05 finished packing up to leave, he was gone. I didn't tell my parents. what had really happened, the messages, the calls, or that he stayed by my window for hours. They thought it was strange, but they didn't understand why I looked like I was about to throw up. I ran to the car with my hood up, terrified he was watching us, that he knew our license plate, that he could track me somehow. To this day, and I can't wrap my head around how he got my number or how he knew which caravan we were in. never felt so violated. I didn't call the police. I didn't tell anyone. I just left and tried to move on. But every time I remember that night, him standing outside for hours, waiting. That same cold
Starting point is 00:23:57 feeling comes back, that nausea that runs through my whole body. Story 4. I have been counting down the days for years until the end of school trip. Ten days away. from home. No parents, just friends and freedom. Overall, the trip was great, but there was one person who made me feel really uncomfortable. The hotel security guard, he was assigned to our wing, and the first time we met, he seemed friendly. We chattered a little and he asked me to guess his age. I said 45, and he laughed and said he was 30. We joked about him. He said he was 30. We joked about him. about it and then each of us went on our way. The next night I went out partying with my friends. Around 2 a.m. I started to feel sick from something I'd taken and decided to go back early.
Starting point is 00:24:59 He was in the lobby and noticed I wasn't feeling well. He offered to walk me to my room, and since it didn't seem strange at the time, I said, Okay. He walked with me, wished me good night and left. Nothing weird. about that. At least not yet. The next day he asked how old I was. I teased him a little and told him I was 16. He smiled smugly and said he didn't believe me. Later he asked someone on the trip staff and they told him I was 18. Then he said, oh so you're legal. Good. My stomach dropped. I tried to brush it off. But from then on his behavior. completely changed. That night he asked me if I was a virgin. I told him it was none of his business.
Starting point is 00:25:53 And he laughed like it was a joke. After that, every time I ran into him, he blew kisses at me or made weird gestures, like putting his hand over his heart or puckering his lips when no one else was looking. I started avoiding him. A few nights later, I was waiting for the elevator with a couple of friends when he came up, put his arm around my shoulders, and asked if I had a boyfriend. He said things like, you're going to be naughty on this trip, aren't you? I don't gossip. My friends looked uncomfortable, and I froze until the elevator finally arrived. On the second to last night, I was about to go out with the group when I realized I'd forgotten my phone upstairs. I asked them to wait and went up alone. The hallway was completely empty and quiet, except for the distant echo of
Starting point is 00:26:53 music coming from downstairs. When I turned the corner, he was there standing right in front of my door as if he'd been waiting. He smiled and said something about how quiet everything was. I mumbled an excuse and went straight back down the stairs, pretending I couldn't find my phone. I didn't tell anyone why. On the last day, he went up to my friends and said how sad he was because he'd never been able to be with me, that he'd been waiting for me, and that he could have shown me a good time. I laughed it off to avoid an awkward moment. Inside, I felt awful.
Starting point is 00:27:36 The only thing that comforted me was that the trip was ending. That trip was supposed to be one of the best memories of my school. years, and in many ways it was, but I still think about how uncomfortable that man made me feel. I didn't say anything to the trip staff. I just wanted to go home and forget all of it had happened. Story 5. A few months ago, I moved into a large studio apartment complex with my two-year-old daughter. It's a decent place, quiet enough, with an enclosed courtyard that's a little. The first that's open on one side as an entryway. There's no gate or door,
Starting point is 00:28:24 just an opening that leads into the shared courtyard. About three weeks ago, my sister came over with a few of her friends. We were sitting outside in the courtyard, having a couple of beers, playing cards against humanity, and keeping the music low because my daughter was asleep inside. We were laughing and having a good time when all of a sudden,
Starting point is 00:28:48 The security guard walked into my courtyard. I asked, hey, are we being too loud? Did someone complain? He smiled and said, No, you're fine. I'm just doing my rounds. He stayed a little longer than necessary, making small talk. And then he left.
Starting point is 00:29:10 Nobody thought much of it and we went back to the game. About 25 minutes later, when most people had already left, He came back. At that point it was just my sister, her friend Cody and me. He was an older man, late 40s or early 50s, somewhat heavy set, wearing glasses. This time he walked straight over and started talking again. He told us he used to be a police officer, but had to retire after a heart attack, and that he'd had a quintuple bypass before taking this security job.
Starting point is 00:29:48 I felt bad for him. He seemed lonely, so I listened and tried to be kind. But he stayed for at least half an hour. My sister started getting uncomfortable, and eventually she said out loud, while we're going to bed. He said, good night, and left. As soon as he was gone, my sister told me she didn't like the way he looked at me, that something felt off. like he'd gotten fixated on me.
Starting point is 00:30:21 I told her she was probably overthinking it. About a week later, he showed up again. We were inside talking and I had the main door open, with only the screen door closed, to let some air in. I got that strange feeling of being watched. I looked up and there he was again, standing at the edge of the courtyard, looking inside. I said hello.
Starting point is 00:30:47 and he took a step as if he was waiting for me to invite him in. I looked away, pretending not to notice. And when I looked back, he was gone. A few days later, I got home late from work, took a shower, and put on my red silk robe. I was washing dishes and sipping wine, not really paying attention to anything. When I turned toward the couch,
Starting point is 00:31:15 I almost screamed. The security guard was right outside my screen door, staring through the gap where the wooden door was still partially open. He didn't even flinch when I jumped. I stammered. You scared me. There was no apology, no expression. Just I was doing my rounds. I told him I was going to bed, but he didn't move. He looked around my courtyard and said, You should bring the bike in. someone could take it. Yeah, I will, I said quickly, and I slammed the door shut.
Starting point is 00:31:54 I locked every lock, sat down, and tried to calm myself. My heart was racing. I didn't know if he was just awkward or if there was really something wrong with that man. My sister and my friends told me to report him, and after thinking about it overnight, I did. The property manager took my statement over the statement over the person. the phone and didn't seem surprised, which made me wonder if there had been other complaints. Two days later, they called to tell me he'd been fired. They told me to call the police if I ever saw him
Starting point is 00:32:29 again. Since then, it's been quiet, but every night when I lock up, I still think about how close it came, just a few steps away, looking through that gap as if he had a right to be there. Story six. In the building where I worked, there were two security guards. One was a charming older man who chatted with everyone. The other was around my age, mid-20s, quiet, and at first he seemed harmless. We talked a little now and then, and over time he asked me out to dinner. I didn't see the problem.
Starting point is 00:33:17 I'd be moving to another country soon. there was no possibility of anything serious developing. I thought, one dinner before I leave, why not? My first mistake was giving him my address so he could pick me up. I mentioned it to a few co-workers just in case, but honestly, I didn't think much of it. He was the building security guard, someone I saw every day at work. What was the worst that could happen? He arrived right on time, holding two dozen red roses.
Starting point is 00:33:54 He said he'd bought a new suit for the date, and it even had his car thoroughly cleaned. It was overwhelming. I thanked him, but I stepped inside for a moment, pretending I'd forgotten something, partly so I wouldn't have to invite him in just to put the flowers in water. We went to a really nice restaurant, far more upscale than I expected. We hadn't even ordered drinks yet when he blurted out. I've never kissed anyone. You're my first date.
Starting point is 00:34:26 I froze. I had no idea what to say. He smiled nervously, waiting for me to respond, but all I could think was, oh no. The rest of the dinner was painfully awkward. I tried to be kind, asked him about work and his hobbies.
Starting point is 00:34:45 But he answered in short sentences, and every silence felt endless. When he dropped me off at home, I thought he was going to hug me, and instead he shoved his tongue into my mouth. It was fast, clumsy, and completely unexpected. I wiped my mouth, mumbled something polite, and went inside.
Starting point is 00:35:08 As unpleasant as it was, I figured it would fade with time. After all, I was leaving the country. It wasn't a big deal, right? But it didn't fade. The next morning he started calling over and over. I ignored him, thinking he'd get the hint. But the calls continued all weekend.
Starting point is 00:35:31 His messages went from anxious to angry. By Sunday night, I had more than a dozen voicemails, some of them accusing me of leading him on. When I got to work on Monday morning, there was a handwritten letter on my desk. It said he had driven by my apartment over the weekend and noticed my car wasn't there. He wrote that he missed me and wanted to know where I'd gone. Then he listed other things.
Starting point is 00:35:59 What time I left for work. When I usually came back. Details that proved he'd been watching me for weeks. That's when it really hit me that something wasn't right. I avoided him as much as I could. But he started showing up outside of work, standing near places I went. I didn't confront him. I simply gave notice and moved earlier than planned before my overseas transfer.
Starting point is 00:36:28 I thought that would be the end of it. But not even a month after I settled into my new place, I started getting messages from unknown accounts. They sounded familiar, the same tone, the same strange expressions he used. He'd found me online, even though I used a different name. Then he started following my friend's profiles, leaving cryptic comments, trying to get their attention. I blocked every account I could, but he kept making new ones. To this day, I don't know how he kept getting to me through my information, but I do know one thing. He isn't harmless, not even close.
Starting point is 00:37:14 Thank you.
