I know that night I made a lot of mistakes and I take responsibility. But if telling it helps someone else avoid ending up in a similar situation, then maybe it's worth it. I'm not much of a drinker. I normally avoid alcohol, although about once a month I go out with friends and loosen up. That night started like any of those infrequent outings.
Starting point is 00:01:57 My friends and I went to a few bars in the city, drank more than we should have, laughed too loudly, and for a while everything felt fine. Toward the end of the night everyone left, but I decided to stay. I was chatting with a guy I found attractive and in my tipsy state, I thought going to his place was a good idea. Everything was disappointing. Let's just say it wasn't worth it. After that, I just wanted to leave and go home.
Starting point is 00:02:29 I opened the Uber app, but since I had no idea where I really was, the app wouldn't stop spinning. requesting requesting finally I cancelled and tried again that's when a car pulled up in front of the building without thinking I staggered over mumbled something like this is the Uber and got in that was my first mistake the guy didn't say much at first he just took off and got onto the highway I was distracted digging around for a cigarette and trying to make conversation. It wasn't until a few minutes later that I realized we weren't going the direction we should have been. Instead, he was flying down the freeway at nearly 90 miles per hour,
Starting point is 00:03:17 and it was the exact opposite direction from where I thought I needed to go. That's when my phone rang. It was my real Uber driver. He was waiting for me, which meant I'd gotten into the wrong car. And not only that, but I'd gotten into the car of someone who wasn't an Uber driver at all. Panic hit me immediately. I started texting a friend trying to list the mile markers as we passed, but the more I thought about it, the less sense it made. She had been drinking too, and even if she were sober enough to understand, she had no way to help me. So I called 911 doing everything I could to keep my voice calm and casual. The man must have noticed because he started snapping at me. Who are you calling? It better not be the police. You better not be a snitch. He was aggressive but also
Starting point is 00:04:15 distracted, weaving through traffic, driving way over the limit. And at one point, he lit up a joint like none of this was strange. I was terrified. I didn't want to say or or do anything that might set him off. So I tried to make my conversation with the operator sound like I was talking to a friend. Hey girl, it's me, I said, praying the operator would understand. Yeah, I'm with someone right now. We're passing exit name.
Starting point is 00:04:48 No, it's not my Uber. I thought it was, but it's not. Luckily, the operator caught on immediately. He kept me on the line, guiding me on what to say. say and came up with a code. If I saw patrol cars, I'd stick my hand out the window as if I were just holding a cigarette. By then, we've been driving for almost 40 minutes. I had no idea where we were. My chest felt tight. My hands were shaking. And the guy kept glancing at me sideways, muttering under his breath like he was trying to figure me out. Suddenly, and without warning,
Starting point is 00:05:28 he exited the highway into a small residential area. He parked, pulled out a bag of white powder, and lined up two lines on the dashboard. He didn't even care that I was sitting there watching. That made it a thousand times worse because if he was high, there was no telling what he might do next. I tried to stay calm and related to the operator in code. Girl, I wish you were here.
Starting point is 00:05:57 I said into the phone, forcing a laugh. This guy just pulled out Coke. You'd love it. He's about to do a huge line. That's when finally I saw red and blue lights flashing in the distance. I didn't care if I gave myself away. I stuck my hand out the window and started waving it frantically. The man didn't even have time to process what was happening before we were surrounded.
Starting point is 00:06:25 The officers dragged him out first, and once everything was safe, they helped me out too. They rushed me to the hospital for an evaluation, and it wasn't until I was sitting in the back of the patrol car on the way there that I learned who I had been riding with. The man was in his 40s, and apparently he'd spent almost 30 of those years in federal prison for violent crimes. I can't stop thinking about how easily everything could have gone the other way, if I hadn't stayed on the phone with 911. If the operator hadn't picked up on my hints, or if the police hadn't arrived in time.
Starting point is 00:07:05 I don't know if I'd even be here telling this. So here's my advice. If you ever feel like something isn't right, ask for help and don't hang up. Stay on the line no matter what. That call probably saved my life. Story 2. This happened about six months ago,
Starting point is 00:07:30 and I only recently worked up the courage to use Uber again. I was leaving a work event at a bar, around midnight, in a city about an hour from the suburb I share with my partner. I'm a woman in my 20s, average build, not especially strong or intimidating. And while I wasn't drunk that night, I did have a bit of a buzz. Three drinks isn't much, but it was enough to keep me relaxed and maybe a little too trusting. Normally, if I know I'll be out late, I book a company car to get home, but this time I didn't, because I wasn't sure what time I'd be leaving. Uber seemed easier, and since the company reimburses me anyway, I didn't think twice.
Starting point is 00:08:18 When the car arrived, I said goodbye to my co-workers and got into the back seat. I always try to be kind to drivers, so I introduced myself right away. This guy, let's call him Ed because I never knew his real name, seemed completely normal, friendly, chatty, nothing out of the ordinary. For the first 15 minutes or so, we kept up like conversation as we left the city. At one point, he mentioned the area where he lived, which interestingly wasn't far from my neighborhood, even though it wasn't anywhere near the route we were taking. At the time, it didn't seem strange to me. small talk. As time went on, the conversation faded and I started scrolling on my phone. Then he told me I could
Starting point is 00:09:06 take a nap if I was tired. It didn't sound weird at first, but then he added, I always get sleepy when I'm drunk. Are you sure? My stomach dropped. I told him I wasn't drunk, that I'd only had a couple of drinks, and that I didn't need to sleep anyway. I tried to make it sound like like a joke, but something about how he kept pushing it put me on alert. Not long after that, he said the highway up ahead was a mess because of construction and that traffic would crawl if we stayed on it. He asked if I was okay with him taking a faster route. Already uneasy, all I wanted was to get home, so I said yes. Luckily, or coincidentally, my partner called right then to ask what time I'd be back, and I made sure to say his name out loud and that he was
Starting point is 00:10:01 waiting for me. I wanted the driver to hear it, to know I wasn't a girl no one was expecting. We got off the highway at an exit I didn't recognize, but I figured maybe it really was a shortcut. I buried myself in my phone to avoid talking. Out of nowhere, he said, my house is only five minutes from here my world dropped out from under me we were still at minimum 25 minutes from my house and that supposed shortcut had actually made the trip longer I forced myself to act normal
Starting point is 00:10:39 gushing about how nice the neighborhood looked and even tossing in a lie about how my boyfriend and I were thinking about moving nearby he didn't respond he just kept driving After a while I realized we were heading back toward my area. I started to feel relieved, but it didn't last. Along the way, he began asking me about my boyfriend. At first, harmless questions. How long we'd been together, what he did for work.
Starting point is 00:11:11 Then just ten minutes from my house, he asked if my boyfriend made me happy. I smiled and said yes. Very much. Maybe I even got a little enthusiastic. He nodded slowly and asked, And do you make him happy? The question threw me off, but I dodged it with a joke. I hope so.
Starting point is 00:11:34 Eight minutes left. Suddenly, he turned on to a dark side street, stopped the car, and twisted around in his seat to look at me. Would you make me happy too? At first I just stared, not processing what he'd said. He repeated it, this time more bluntly. Do you want to make me happy tonight? My blood went cold.
Starting point is 00:12:00 The street was deserted, no lights in the nearby houses, and it was almost 1 a.m. I had a small knife and pepper spray in my bag, but pulling them out felt impossible. Too risky without knowing what he might have. So I leaned on the only shield that has again and again worked for me in situational. like that. I don't think my boyfriend would like that. His smile faded. He doesn't have to find out. Come on, make me happy. I know a couple ways you could start. I kept my voice steady even though my heart was pounding. He's waiting for me and I love him. I don't want to hurt him. Please take me home. something above my tone must have landed because he didn't say another word he turned back around
Starting point is 00:12:53 put the car in gear and drove the rest of the way without speaking when we arrived out of pure habit i thanked him got out quickly and went inside the moment i hugged my partner i started crying he insisted i reported immediately so i opened the uber app but when i checked the trip history my stomach dropped again. The profile photo was not the man who had driven me. The car matched, but the registered driver was a middle-aged man with darker skin and a turban. The person who drove me was wide and closer to my age. Whoever he was, he wasn't the person Uber had on file.
Starting point is 00:13:36 Uber refunded the fare, but never followed up. My partner encouraged me to go to the police, so I did. but they minimized it because nothing happened. For weeks afterward, I couldn't shake the fear that he knew where I lived. Over time, it faded, but I'll never forget how vulnerable I felt. So please, always check that your Uber driver's face matches their profile photo before you get in. That tiny step could save you from a night like mine. Story 3.
Starting point is 00:14:14 This happened about a year ago, but it still haunts me. me because of how badly it could have ended. I was visiting some friends in the city, an hour by train from where I lived with my boyfriend. It was getting late and the last train home was leaving in less than an hour. My friend's place was only a 10-minute drive from the station, so I told them I'd have to leave soon. The friend who had promised to drive me got way too drunk, so he ordered me an Uber. Normally I would have just stayed the night, but I was in my first trimester of pregnancy, and all I wanted was to get back to my own bed, safe with my boyfriend. When my friend requested the first Uber, he saw the driver's photo and cancelled, saying the guy
Starting point is 00:15:03 looked sketchy. We laughed, but he did the same thing with the second option, hesitating before finally letting it go through. That driver didn't exactly look welcoming either, though less unsettling than the first. A few minutes later, the car arrived. I got in and the driver immediately asked if I was Chris, my friend's name. I explained that my friend had booked the ride for me and that he had the right passenger. He asked for my name and then followed it with, is he your boyfriend? I told him, know just a friend and gave him my first name. He smiled and said something about how a girl like me should have a boyfriend. Then he went back to complimenting me. I thanked him quickly, tried to put in an earbud, but he kept talking, circling the same topic. I know that city like the back of my hand.
Starting point is 00:16:00 I had lived there and I could get to the station with my eyes closed. At that hour, traffic was light and almost all the main routes fed into the same place. So when I saw him enter the address into the GPS, I knew exactly which way we were supposed to go. The first instruction popped up, turn left at the next street, because straight ahead was a dead end. Simple, but instead of turning left, he jerked hard to the right into a narrow passage. The GPS immediately told him to turn around. I told him that wasn't the way. Only then did he pretend to realize the mistake. He laughed and said, I'll still get you there, if you don't mind me speeding. Before I could respond, he slammed on the gas and got us up to 50 or 60 miles per hour in a residential area where the limit was only 25.
Starting point is 00:16:58 Then just as abruptly he hit the brakes at a stop sign and the seatbelt cut into my shoulder. He repeated it, hard acceleration and hard braking, while following the GPS for a few blocks. Then he flat out ignored it and started going the opposite direction. That's when I knew he wasn't planning to take me to the train. I texted my friends that something was wrong and they told me to come back, but I was stubborn and desperate to sleep in my bed, so I tried to reason with him again. this isn't the way I'm going to miss the train
Starting point is 00:17:37 he replied you won't be late even though he had no idea what time it left a Camaro pulled up close behind us enough to make him nervous and he started muttering that the cops were following him at first I ignored it but he kept insisting louder and louder
Starting point is 00:17:58 why are the cops following me why are they following me I stayed quiet, and when the car behind us turned off and left, he calmed down. By then I realized 15 minutes had passed and we weren't even a mile from my friend's house. There was no way I was going to make the train. I demanded that he'd take me back. He kept insisting I'd make it, but I pushed harder, pointing at the time on my phone. Finally he gave in, though not before slowing down at an intersection near a bus stop where a young girl was standing alone.
Starting point is 00:18:39 For a second, my stomach turned at the thought that maybe he was trying to pick her up. My phone wouldn't stop buzzing with messages, and maybe he realized people were checking on me, because after that he drove me back without arguing. When we arrived, my friends were already waiting at the door. I got out fast and went straight inside, but I glanced back and saw him stopped a few houses down, talking to someone in a hoodie on the sidewalk. I don't know what his intentions were that night, but I can imagine. I reported him to Uber and even posted in a local driver forum,
Starting point is 00:19:18 hoping no one else would end up in the same situation. Story 4 This happened a couple of months ago, and honestly, it still echoes in my hands. head every time I have to order an Uber. That night I was heading out on a first date, excited but with that typical nervousness you get when you're going to meet someone new. Since it was a date, I put a bit more effort into my outfit, a fitted top with a slight neckline in black pants. Nothing over the top, but enough to feel put together. I ordered the Uber like I always do, and when the car arrived I went to open the back door like usual that's when everything started to feel off the driver leaned over and blocked me with his hand insisting that i sit up front i tried to refuse politely telling him i preferred the back seat but he literally wouldn't let me get in arm extended with a smile that made my stomach twist against my better judgment i sat in the front pressing myself as a little bit of a smile that made my stomach twist against my better judgment i sat in the front pressing myself as
Starting point is 00:20:30 close as possible to the passenger side door. As I sat down, I caught a glimpse out of the corner of my eye that he had his hand placed on the seat like he was expecting me to sit on it, and he only moved it when I slid over to avoid it. My nerves spiked and I pulled out my phone to text my cousin, telling her exactly what was happening and asking her to stay on the phone with me. While I was texting, he started in with questions, where I was going, who I was meeting. I told him I was going on a date, hoping he'd leave me alone if he thought someone was expecting me.
Starting point is 00:21:12 Instead, he looked me up and down, slowly, and said, Really, you're not married. When I saw you, I thought you were going out and your husband and kids were staying home. It was such a weirdly specific thing. comment that it gave me goosebumps. I answered with, ah, no, I'm not married, I don't have kids, and tried to put my other earbud in. That only opened the door for him to start lecturing me about how I should have kids and how children should be my number one priority. I tried to change the subject or stay quiet, but he wouldn't stop. Eventually I blurted out that I couldn't
Starting point is 00:21:54 have children, thinking that would shut him up. It didn't. He started asking invasive questions about my health, and I cut him off sharply by telling him that trying to carry a pregnancy would probably kill me. He barely reacted. He just said I needed to pray more so God would heal me, and I could have his children, and added that he would love to give me all the children I wanted. Every so often he would reach over like he was going to touch me. And every time I pulled away and told him to stop, he half apologized, only to immediately go back to telling me how beautiful I was and that in his country, Kenya or maybe Nigeria, I'm not sure. Everyone would be in love with me. By that point, my mind was running through every bad scenario, from kidnapping to something worse.
Starting point is 00:22:49 I told him very clearly that I was texting with my cousin, and then I made a call to the restaurant to put myself on the wait list. In reality, I gave them my name, my description, and my estimated arrival time just in case something happened. That seemed to calm him down for a few minutes. As we got closer to the restaurant, he started up again, asking when he could see me another time. I don't know when I'll see you again, and it makes me sad, he said. I tried to keep my voice neutral. Well, I guess if I use Uber again and by chance you happen to be the one driving. Inside I was only thinking, get me to the restaurant, don't make him angry.
Starting point is 00:23:38 He kept pushing saying he needed me to do something to make him feel better. Finally, when we were a block from the restaurant, he slowed down to stop. and I immediately unlocked the door, jumped out, and told him to leave me alone. His face was twisted with anger and he reached out, but I was already on the sidewalk, putting distance between us. I contacted Uber right away and reported everything. They told me they couldn't give me details because of privacy policies, but they assured me the driver had been removed from the platform in less than an hour. Since then I get nervous using Uber, although fortunately nothing like that has happened to me again.
Starting point is 00:24:23 Later, when I told my date what had happened, he pointed out something I hadn't even considered. By saying I was on my way to a date, I had basically told the driver I was single, which might have emboldened him. A couple of male friends said the same thing and recommended that in unsettling situations like that, I say I'm married, though I'm not sure that always helps. Story 5. It was late on a weeknight, and my boyfriend and I had been drinking with friends. We ended up at another couple's apartment, about 15 minutes from our place. But it was already getting close to the time to think about work the next day.
Starting point is 00:25:12 Neither of us wanted to deal with driving. So we ordered an Uber like we had dozens of times. When it arrived, everything seemed perfectly normal. The driver smiled, made light conversation, and nothing about him set off any alarms. I remember leaning back in the seat with that heavy exhausted haze you get after a long night. At first, the ride felt routine. He was friendly, the car was clean, and I thought I could close my eyes for a bit until we got home. But suddenly, like someone flipped a switch, my adrenaline spiked.
Starting point is 00:25:53 We reached an intersection I recognized, which is strange for me, because I'm terrible with directions. But I knew enough to realize we were close to our neighborhood. Turning right would take us toward home. Turning left would take us to a completely different town. The driver stopped at the light and put on the left turn signal. I looked at my boyfriend and saw the tension on his face. He asked the driver where exactly he was going, because that wasn't the right way. The guy replied casually telling us not to worry that he was from the area and knew a shortcut.
Starting point is 00:26:32 It wasn't totally impossible, especially since we were still on a main road with lots of side streets. So we tried to relax, but the hair on the back of my neck stood up. A few minutes later we reached another light, and again, there were two options, right toward our general direction or left toward the neighboring town. Again, he turned on the left signal. This time I noticed something that made my stomach drop. The screen on his phone was completely black. No GPS, no Uber app, no tracking at all. He wasn't even pretending to follow directions.
Starting point is 00:27:13 That's when my pulse started pounding in my ears. I got my phone ready, prepared to dial 911, and slid my keys into the center of my palm. Fingers wrapped around the sharp spike keychain I carry for self-defense. My boyfriend, on the other hand, hit his limit. Suddenly he lunged forward, half-rising between the seats, and yelled at the driver to tell us where the hell he was taking us, because this wasn't our route. The reaction was immediate. The driver switched to the right turn signal instead,
Starting point is 00:27:49 and at the last second merged into the lane going the correct direction. His voice spilled into apologies over and over. Sorry, man, sorry, I've got you. I'm taking you home right now. Almost like he'd been caught and was panicking. My boyfriend still leaned over the front seat, was blunt. You know what? Forget it. Let us out right here. Just open the doors. And that's when the guy's facade
Starting point is 00:28:20 fully cracked. He got defensive, voice shaky, repeating. No, no, no, I'm sorry, please. Now I'm going the right way. I promise. He wasn't even trying to make up an excuse. From his tone, he was practically admitting he'd been taking us somewhere else. I honestly can't remember clearly whether we stayed in the car all the way to the end or if we got out and walked. It was late. We were tired and a little drunk, and the adrenaline made everything blurry. But what stuck with me was the image of that black screen, how fast he backed off the moment we realized,
Starting point is 00:29:02 and how my boyfriend's sudden movement made him switch from left to right in the blink of an eye. We reported him the next morning in the app. Uber never told us exactly what they did, but we never got matched with him as a driver again. And I can only hope that whatever it was, it meant no one else had to sit in that car wondering what might happen next. Sometimes I still think about it and wonder what his plan was. Honestly, I don't want to know. Story 6. It's been about four months, maybe a little more. But that night is still lodged in the back of my car.
Starting point is 00:29:46 my mind as if it happened yesterday. I was 19 at the time and I was heading home from university after a long day of classes. Normally I would have had my own keys, but around that time I'd lost them and my mom kept putting off taking me to get a copy made. I'd been reminding her for weeks and she still hadn't done it. So my routine became knocking on the door until my little brother came to let me in. Except that day she had taken her keys too. He was locked in inside, just like I was locked out. I asked my brother to slide my charger under the door so my phone wouldn't die, and I called one of my aunts to see if I could wait at her workplace until my mom got back. She agreed and told me she'd cover the Uber once I got there. I ordered the ride and the pickup point
Starting point is 00:30:40 ended up across the street, not right in front of my house. Not a big deal, just how it worked out. When the car pulled up, I got that subtle bad vibe feeling. Not necessarily danger, just that vague uneasiness I get in every taxi or Uber. But I told myself I was being paranoid. I rolled the window down so air could come in and I grip both of my phones tightly. At first, everything seemed normal enough. We made small talk. He followed the GPS. I looked out the window, counting the minutes. But when we got near the neighborhood where my aunt lives, she has a small convenience store that she runs out of her home inside a gated residential area. Something changed. Instead of slowing down near her street, he drove right past it. When I asked, he insisted he was following the GPS.
Starting point is 00:31:40 but he kept tilting the screen so I couldn't see it. He drove with a quiet confidence, like he knew exactly where he was going, and that where was not my aunt's house. I tried to calm myself down, thinking maybe I was the one who was mistaken, but then I started recognizing landmarks that were nowhere near her house, like a fountain I'd only ever seen when my mom headed toward my uncle's place, which was much farther away. He kept taking us through stretches of empty lots and half-built houses,
Starting point is 00:32:14 the kind of places where you can feel how far you are from any help. Then he stopped the car. We were on a hill right at the edge of the development, and he turned off the engine. That's when it hit me how bad this could get. My phone didn't have any credit left. Right as that thought hit, my aunt called out of nowhere to ask where I was. and my world collapsed because I couldn't answer. The guy just sat there staring at me.
Starting point is 00:32:45 When I blurted out, where did you bring me? He replied with a chilling coldness. I wouldn't know what to tell you, girl. That was enough. I grabbed my backpack, open the door, and said out loud. Okay, I'll figure it out. And I bolted. I ran as fast as I could, holding my backpack in front of me.
Starting point is 00:33:08 not on my back, so he couldn't grab it if he chased me. My aunt stayed on the line while I looked for somewhere to hide. Knocking on random doors didn't feel safe, and the car was still behind me. Then I saw an empty lot with tall concrete walls and a heavy metal gate. There was just enough space under the gate for me to squeeze through. I threw my bag underneath and crawled in after it. inside there was an old electrical control box big enough for me to crouch inside i opened it and hid there phone pressed to my ear for almost two hours i curled up inside that metal box my aunt and uncle were on
Starting point is 00:33:53 another call trying to add credit to my phone and track my live location through WhatsApp i was fighting my own arachnophobia and tripophobia because of the tiny spiders and old honeycomb like nests inside. I only peeked out once to pee and crawled back in immediately. Every time I looked out, the car was still there. Eventually, at some point, the guy must have left. My uncle drove around in his truck honking until I could tell the sound was close. I crawled out, ran to him, and he took me straight to my aunt's pharmacy. For a while, I actually wondered if I'd overreacted if I'd jumped out of the car like a crazy person. But then when I checked the Uber app, it showed that I'd already paid and that I'd been dropped off at my destination, which was obviously a
