Starting point is 00:01:31 spend a quiet week at our old family home, a farmhouse located in a rural area of Maine. It was supposed to be the perfect getaway, a much-needed breakaway from a much-needed breakaway from the bustle of the city. However, Michael serves in the United States military, and at the last minute, he couldn't get leave. Instead of canceling the trip, I decided to go anyway with our two children, Emily, who was ten, and Jacob, who was eight. The house is located a few miles from Ellsworth, surrounded by acres of wild fields. It's a rustic building built in the late 1940s by my grandfather. I have always found the creek of the porch and the smell of old wood comforting,
Starting point is 00:02:14 although the place can feel quite isolated. The cell phone signal is weak and there is no modern security system, only simple locks on doors and windows. We arrived on a sunny afternoon. The children ran out immediately, excited to explore the orchard and the small flower garden behind the house. Everything seemed completely normal that first day. I unpacked the supplies, checked the plumbing, and felt a gentle sense of relief.
Starting point is 00:02:44 Despite Michael's absence, I was glad to be able to share that corner of my childhood with Emily and Jacob. The next morning, and I went out onto the porch with a cup of coffee and noticed something strange. The old wooden chair by the railing wasn't in its place. It seemed to have been dragged to the middle of the porch. My first thought was that the kids had moved it. But when I asked them, they both swore they hadn't touched it. Later that day, I also noticed that a small garden statue, a gnome worn down by the years, had shifted several inches from its usual spot.
Starting point is 00:03:19 They were minor details, yes, but enough to unsettle me. With no cameras or alarms, there wasn't much I could do, so I checked the locks and decided to stay alert. I tried not to show my nervousness, but my mind kept wondering why someone would move a chair or a decorative figure. It seemed so absurd. That afternoon, Emily and Jacob were playing tag near the bushes that lined the fence in the backyard. I was inside washing dishes when I heard Jacob scream. I ran outside, fearing a fall or a sting, but both of them were pale. Jacob whispered that he had seen a man wearing some kind of white mask watching them from within the shrubs.
Starting point is 00:04:04 Emily nodded and added that the man crouched down as soon as he realized they had seen him. I ran to the fence, but there was no one there. I tried to stay calm. There are a few scattered neighbors along the nearby road, so I thought maybe someone had wandered onto our property by mistake. I told the kids it would be better to stay inside for the rest of the day, just in case. The night passed without incident. We locked the doors and all three of us slept together on the living room's sofa bed. Every small creek of the house kept me on edge. But aside from my own anxious thoughts, nothing else happened. The next morning, I discovered footprints in the soft dirt next to the sidewall of the house.
Starting point is 00:04:48 It looked as if someone had walked around the entire building, circling it. My stomach dropped as I realized it wasn't just my imagination. Someone really had been exploring the place during the night. I spent the rest of the day tense, jumping at any sound in the grass. That afternoon, after putting Emily and Jacob to bed, I looked out the window that faces the garden, and my breath caught. A tall figure was there, near the gnome statue half hidden among the bushes. He wasn't moving, just standing there as if watching the house. I froze not knowing what to do.
Starting point is 00:05:28 Then the man turned his head toward me. Even at a distance, I felt his fixed stare. It didn't last long. As soon as he noticed I was watching him, he ran off, crossed the yard, and disappeared into the same shrubs where the kids had seen him before. The next morning, I called the local police station. An officer named Benson arrived in less than an hour. He inspected the property, checked for footprints or signs of an attempted break-in, but he didn't find anything conclusive. It was frustrating and a little embarrassing to have to explain everything, since a sudden.
Starting point is 00:06:05 from the moved objects and the footprints, there was no concrete evidence that could identify the person responsible. The rest of our stay passed without anything new. Whoever that masked man was, he didn't appear again. Maybe the call to the police scared him off. Emily and Jacob were still a little nervous,
Starting point is 00:06:26 but as the days went by, we tried to focus on the positive parts of the trip. Even so, I couldn't fully relax. Every night I sat by the window, watching the garden in case something moved. We finished our vacation and returned, relieved to be back on busy roads and to have neighbors nearby. I told Michael everything, but without tangible proof, there wasn't much more we could do. Sometimes I still wonder who that man was and what he wanted, lurking around our farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. Part of me fears he did the same thing at other houses.
Starting point is 00:07:04 Maybe just watching, or planning something worse. Story 2. I was 19 years old when I worked the night shift at a small gas station on the outskirts of Redfield. About 30 minutes from where I lived. My hours were usually 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., so I spent most nights drinking cold coffee, trying not to fall asleep at the register, and hoping I wouldn't have to deal with anything out of the ordinary. It was a pretty quiet area, and when I started the job, I thought it would be an easy one. Ring up drinks and snacks, maybe help someone fill their tank if they seemed confused.
Starting point is 00:07:48 Easy money, right? I remember perfectly the first time I saw the old man. It was a Tuesday night in early November. It was a shift like any other, nothing noteworthy. He walked in around two in the morning, wearing a perfectly pressed flannel shirt, clean jeans and carrying a small newspaper under his arm. His shaky voice greeted me with a good evening. There was something about him that felt trustworthy,
Starting point is 00:08:16 a kind of kind grandfather vibe, so to speak. He bought a black coffee, thanked me with a warm smile and left. Nothing unusual, at least at the time. However, he started coming back night after night, almost always at the same time. It got to the point where I already had his coffee prepared before he even asked for it. Honestly, I was glad to see him. Those hours were lonely, and any kind of human conversation helped pass the time.
Starting point is 00:08:48 He introduced himself as Martin, though he never mentioned his last name, and I didn't ask either. It was simply nice to have company. Over the next week, our conversations became more frequent. We talked about light topics, the weather, local news, the holidays coming up. Every now and then Martin asked me questions about the station. How many people worked there, whether we had cameras, or whether we usually kept a lot of money in the register overnight? At first, I didn't think much of it. Older people are often curious, and I had already been warned that some lonely retirees hang around gas stations or diners just to chat. Still,
Starting point is 00:09:32 it seemed strange to me that he kept insisting on topics related to the place's security. On November 10th, around 3 in the morning, he showed up with his usual smile, sipping coffee while leaning on the counter. He asked if I felt safe working alone. I shrugged and told him yes, that we had a good security system and that we never kept more than a few hundred dollars in the register. I even told him that our manager, Don. sometimes stopped by unannounced to check how everything was going.
Starting point is 00:10:05 Martin listened closely, nodded thoughtfully, and changed the subject. A few nights later, two local police officers came in, ones I hadn't seen before. They seemed tense. One of them asked if I had noticed anything suspicious in the area. I froze for a moment, remembering the very specific questions Martin had asked me, But I told them no, that everything had been normal, just the usual customers and the same night owls as always. They left without buying anything, and I was left with an uneasy feeling in my stomach.
Starting point is 00:10:42 I convinced myself I was overreacting. Martin kept visiting the station, and I kept talking with him. By mid-November, without realizing it, I had already told him too much, that the security cameras sometimes malfunctioned. that I was the only one with the storage room keys at night, and even my routine for counting the cash drawer. I know it sounds stupid now, but back then I was just happy to have someone to talk to.
Starting point is 00:11:11 He was never pushy or threatening. He just asked casual questions, as if it were a normal conversation. On November 19th, something felt off in the air. The parking lot was completely empty, and the ceiling lights seemed dimmer than usual. Martin didn't show up at his regular time, which made me a little uneasy. I tried not to think too much about it, but the quiet was strange, heavy.
Starting point is 00:11:39 By four in the morning, not a single customer had come in for more than two hours, something very unusual, even for a slow shift. I left the counter to restock sodas, and suddenly, I heard a loud crash coming from the back of the store. My heart lurched. For a second I thought Martin would. appear laughing to scare me. But when I looked, the storage room door was open and several boxes had fallen. At first I thought it was an accident, until I saw two men in ski masks running through the storage area. One carried a duffel bag and the other held what looked like a gun. They hadn't seen me,
Starting point is 00:12:18 so I hid behind an aisle holding my breath. My mind was racing. Where is Martin? Is he here too? I heard their footsteps running toward the back exit, and then silence. I waited a few minutes, shaking, before running to the front to call the police. But when they arrived, the robbers were already gone. The storage area was wrecked, the register had been forced open, the money was gone, and one of the security cameras had been destroyed. The officers questioned me for hours. All I could think about was Martin.
Starting point is 00:12:56 Could he have had something to do with all of this? It turned out the robbery was part of a string of break-ins across nearby counties. The next day, the police called me in again for questioning because I knew Martin. They showed me a blurry image from another security camera. It was him, wearing the same flannel shirt, but with a completely different expression. Cold, calculating. I felt my stomach drop. They asked me what he was like, what we talked about.
Starting point is 00:13:26 about, what information I had given him. I was flooded with a mix of nausea and shame. I realized he had manipulated me with precision. He used my loneliness, my boredom, and my kindness to get every detail he needed and make the robbery fast and clean. I hated myself for not noticing sooner. A week passed, and I could barely sleep after what happened. One afternoon my manager called to tell me Martin had been arrested. He had been hiding in the basement of his house since the robbery, waiting for things to cool down. When the police caught him, they found a large amount of stolen money there, merchandise from different stores, and documents with detailed information about local businesses, including our gas station. I felt relief for a moment, but then my boss
Starting point is 00:14:21 mentioned something disturbing among the seized papers. was a list with employees' names, their schedules, and personal notes. Next to my name, Martin had written a phone number that wasn't mine. We never found out who it belonged to, and that detail to this day is the one that haunts me the most. Story 3. In October 2019, I was in my third year at Greenfield College, located in upstate New York. My days followed a fairly predictable routine. I would wake up around seven in the morning, attend my first class at eight, have lunch with my friends at noon, and in the afternoons I usually went to study sessions or the library. I lived on the second floor of Maple Hall, a women's dorm. It was a comfortable place with a narrow
Starting point is 00:15:20 hallway, identical wooden doors, and the constant murmur of the other students. One Monday afternoon, My friend Kristen mentioned that she had noticed a tall man wearing a black hoodie near the student center. She said he seemed to linger there, watching from a distance. I left when I heard it. I had never seen anyone strange around. Kristen shrugged and said maybe he was just a student who had classes in that area. I didn't think much of it, until other people started hinting at the same thing that they had seen someone wearing the same outfit, always near me, but without approaching.
Starting point is 00:15:58 As the days went by, I started to feel more and more on alert. Every time I walked across campus, I looked around, expecting to spot that black hood among the crowd. Sometimes I thought I caught sight of someone out of the corner of my eye, but when I focused, the figure disappeared into the others, or turned out to be someone else. When I told my roommate Mary, she said I was overreacting that it was just my imagination. I almost believed her, since I still hadn't clearly seen any man following me. On Thursday night, I had a lab that ended around nine. The path back to Maple Hall was dimly lit. As I walked, I saw a hooded person approaching from the other end of the central courtyard.
Starting point is 00:16:46 My heart was pounding, but when he passed by me, he didn't even look at me. I felt a mix of relief and frustration. Was he the same one everyone was talking about? It was just a quick crossing, no answers. On Friday, Mary and I decided to stay longer at the campus library. Midterm assignments were coming up, and the quiet helped us concentrate. Around 10.30, Mary said she was tired and went back to the dorm. I wanted to stay a little longer to find an important reference book.
Starting point is 00:17:21 There was hardly anyone left on the second floor under the cold fluorescent light. I was stretching to reach an old volume of literary criticism when I heard a low voice behind me. Is this the book you're looking for? Startled. I turned around. It was him, the same black hoodie, the hood partially covering his face. He handed me exactly the book I needed. I thanked him in a thin voice, not knowing what else to say, and quickly left the aisle. When I reached the library exit, I wondered if I should have asked his name.
Starting point is 00:17:55 or asked why he always seemed to be nearby. But a strange feeling, almost like danger, washed over me. I just wanted to get back to my room. Outside, the campus was unusually empty. The streetlights barely cast circles of light onto the pavement. Halfway to Maple Hall, I heard footsteps behind me. They stopped when I stopped. I turned around and didn't see anyone,
Starting point is 00:18:21 though I thought I noticed a slight movement near a large oak tree. My pulse sped up and I started walking faster. The footsteps resumed now a little quicker. I turned around again and there he was. The same figure, the same hood. He stood still, but he was holding something behind his back as if he were trying to hide it. Without thinking, I ran. I could hear my own footsteps echoing along with his, getting closer and closer.
Starting point is 00:18:53 The walk felt endless, but finally I caught sight of the entrance to Maple Hall. I shoved the door open, almost ripping it off its hinges, and ran up the stairs to my room. I locked the door and stood there trying to catch my breath. For a moment I thought I heard soft footsteps in the hallway, but they never stopped in front of my door. Eventually the night went silent. The next morning, I reported the incident to campus security. An officer named Mr. Thompson took my statement in his office, a small cluttered space next to the administrative building. He seemed to take it seriously asking me questions about the man's description and behavior.
Starting point is 00:19:36 That day I avoided being alone and stayed close to Kristen and Mary. Anyone wearing a hoodie made me flinch. In the weeks that followed, there were no more sightings or reports of anyone matching his description. The campus returned to its usual routine. but for me nothing was ever the same. Security never managed to identify him, and he never appeared again. Years have passed since then, but the memory still follows me. No one could tell me whether that man was just a lonely stranger
Starting point is 00:20:07 who kept crossing paths with me by coincidence, or something far more sinister. Story 4 I'm an artist, and for a long time my main source of income was traveling to comic, anime, and video games. conventions all across the United States and Canada, and sometimes even to other countries. You'd be surprised how profitable it can be if you know how to work it. Of course it also involves far more work than people imagine, countless hours behind a table
Starting point is 00:20:43 talking to curious attendees and making sure you have enough new material for each event. Back in those years, I used to do custom drawings right there at the conventions, but as my technique improved and my commitments increased, I decided to stop doing them. Simply put, I didn't have the time anymore, and I was focusing on bigger projects. However, while I was scaling back commissions, a man came up to my table and asked for a furry themed illustration. At first I hesitated.
Starting point is 00:21:15 I had never done that kind of art, but I needed the money, and he offered a good amount. I felt a little uncomfortable, but money is money, so I accepted. That same night, after finishing the drawing, I noticed the news had spread within the community. I started getting more and more commissions from people who liked my style and wanted something similar, colorful, cheerful-looking anthropomorphic characters. Soon I came up with the idea of creating a separate account on a platform dedicated to furry art, using a pseudonym. That way I kept my real name out of that environment and avoided interference with my own.
Starting point is 00:21:55 my usual work at comic conventions. Over time, I met a lot of people online. Most were kind, some a bit eccentric, and a few had fairly unusual requests. Eventually I started talking with another furry artist. We connected immediately, sharing jokes about our experiences, and a pretty natural friendship formed. She said she wasn't really involved in the subculture, but it ended up there because she loved the art and the welcoming community. I related to that. I appreciated the audience, but I never considered myself part of the movement. Months later, she suggested that I attend a furry convention,
Starting point is 00:22:36 or at least visit a hybrid event that combined an anime convention, one I was already planning to attend, with a furry con being held in the same place that same weekend. It seemed like a good opportunity to explore a new audience, and she also offered to share her vendor table with me for a day and split the hotel costs. Among artists, that's very common. We share lodging to reduce expenses. I arrived on a Thursday, ready for my anime convention, but her event had already started.
Starting point is 00:23:09 She messaged me inviting me to stop by her table, located in the dealer's den. Since I had nothing to do that night, I accepted. She had prepared a temporary pass in my house. name so I got in without any trouble. The first thing that caught my attention was the atmosphere, colored lights, elaborate costumes, and a very different energy from what I was used to at anime events. At her booth there was someone wearing a huge fur suit, a pink wolf with big cartoonish eyes. I assumed it was her even though I had never seen her in costume. I tried to greet her but she didn't respond with words. She only nodded and let out a high-pitched squeak from a small whistle
Starting point is 00:23:52 hidden in the paw. She communicated only with gestures, staying in character the entire time. It threw me off a bit, because in our online chats she was talkative, sarcastic, funny. I thought maybe she preferred to stay that way out of shyness or habit. We spent a few hours working the table and I sold a few small prints. At seven in the evening we decided to her to pack up. She remained silent the entire time, just moving around and making little noises in the suit. When we got to the hotel room, I collapsed onto the bed, exhausted. Then something happened that made me uncomfortable. She suddenly came up and tickled me on the side. I jolted my heart racing from the surprise. Her movements were still playful, as if nothing had happened,
Starting point is 00:24:42 but the situation unsettled me. I tried to brush it off with a nervous laugh and asked if she was going to take off the suit. She gestured as if she were going to shower, grabbed a few things, and went into the bathroom. That was when I decided I needed fresh air. I didn't want to be alone in a room with someone I couldn't see her here clearly. I noticed she had left her wallet on the table and I remembered having seen her put the hotel key in there earlier. I thought about borrowing it to step out for a bit, but when I opened the wallet, something froze my blood. In the clear ID pocket there was an identification card, and the photo showed a middle-aged man with an unkempt beard, thinning hair, and a heart expression. It was not, at all, the young woman I had been talking to online.
Starting point is 00:25:35 My stomach dropped. I realized I had spent hours next to a total stranger, someone who had been pretending to be someone else. Who was he really? What did he want? My survival instinct took over. I grabbed the key, tossed the wallet back onto the table, and ran. I flew down the stairs, my heart pounding in my chest, until I reached the lobby. From there, I called a friend of mine, a big guy who was also at the anime convention,
Starting point is 00:26:06 and asked him to help me get my things. When he went back up to the room, he told me there was no one there, no suit, no luggage, nothing. It was as if that person had never been there. That night I slept in my friend's room, shaking every time I remembered the scene. The rest of the event, I avoided the dealer's den and blocked every account through which I had been in contact with that supposed friend. The experience shook me so badly that I shut down my furry alias completely and left that world behind. No matter how profitable the business was, nothing justified the risk of ever run. running into someone who wasn't.
Starting point is 00:26:48 Who they said they were. Story 5. I lost my wife in January 2016. Her name was Allison, and she died on a two-lane road outside Redwood Falls, Minnesota. The police explained to me that a long-haul truck driver had fallen asleep at the wheel, crossed the center line, and hit her car head on.
Starting point is 00:27:16 She never had a chance. The man is serving time now. but that never brought me any comfort. For weeks, I barely left our house on Oak Street. I couldn't stand the constant reminders of her absence. The half-filled closet, her favorite mug by the sink, the little notes she used to leave me in my lunch. The nights were a special kind of torture.
Starting point is 00:27:40 I would sit in the armchair in front of the TV, though I rarely turned it on. I would stare at the blank screen thinking about how quickly life can fall apart. One Saturday night in mid-February, the pain of missing her became unbearable. Around 10.30 p.m., I grabbed my jacket and my keys. I decided to go visit her grave. It wasn't a sensible decision. I was tired. The roads were empty. And a cemetery close to 11 at night is not exactly a comforting place. But I couldn't resist the impulse. I needed to feel close
Starting point is 00:28:16 to her, even if it was in a place that dark. I drove west on County Road 14, a rural road that winds between farms and old industrial warehouses. It was a longer route than the highway, but much lonelier at that hour. My headlights barely lit up the endless asphalt and every now and then the distant outline of some barn or silo. Halfway there, I saw a car parked on the shoulder, crooked with its hazard lights off. In the dim light I made out a woman standing beside the vehicle. As I slowed down, my heart lurched. She had the same presence as Allison.
Starting point is 00:28:57 The same height, the same brown hair pulled back in a loose ponytail. It was so unreal that I didn't think twice before stopping. I rolled down the window, and she approached saying something about her car breaking down. Her voice was soft, shaky with a tone that stirred my compassion. I offered to take a look, mentioning that I worked as a mechanic at Don's Auto Service. She seemed relieved and led me to the front of the car. I opened the hood and checked the basics. The battery cables, the belts, the hoses.
Starting point is 00:29:33 Everything seemed in order. But my mind was elsewhere, stuck on the confusion of how she could look so much like my wife. The feeling was unsettling, almost supernatural. I tried to focus, but a growing discomfort took hold of me. Suddenly, I heard a noise behind me. Before I could turn, something struck me hard in the head. The world spun, my knees buckled, and I fell heavily onto the asphalt. With my vision blurred, I managed to make out two men stepping out of the darkness, one holding a metal bar in his hand. The woman stood completely still, watching me with a coldness that made my blood run ice cold.
Starting point is 00:30:17 In that instant, I understood. It was a trap. Then everything went black. When I woke up, I was in a hospital bed. The fluorescent lights hurt my eyes, and I felt a dull ache at the back of my skull. A doctor named Morgan explained that he had been on his way to Redwood Falls Hospital for his night shift
Starting point is 00:30:37 when he found me lying on the side of the road. He hadn't seen any car, any woman, or anyone else. Just me, unconscious and bleeding. I asked him about my vehicle, but he said there hadn't been one at the scene. Only my body on the pavement. Panic took over. I called the police and filed a report for the assault and the theft of my car. Days passed, then weeks, and the answers never came.
Starting point is 00:31:08 Every call ended the same way. We're still investigating, sir. There were no recordings, witnesses, or any trace of the license plate in the region. My friends and family tried to comfort me. Some said it might have been a random robbery. Others suggested that my grief could have distorted my memories, that maybe not everything happened the way I remembered it.
Starting point is 00:31:32 But I know what I saw. I clearly remember that woman's face, so similar to Allison's. I remember her trembling voice. her kind gesture as she led me into that moment of vulnerability. I still visit Allison's grave, but never at night. Sometimes I leave flowers and think about what happened that night on the road. I wonder who those men were, whether the woman was part of it from the beginning,
Starting point is 00:31:59 and why they left me alive. Part of me can't help thinking their intention went far beyond simply stealing a car. Story 6. You know how it is. is when life gets so hectic that you almost stop seeing the person you love. That was Ben and me in 2018. We both had demanding jobs. I was a nurse and he worked in software development. For months we hadn't had a single real break. Our schedules rarely lined up and when they did, we were too exhausted to do anything fun. Tension started to build and small pointless arguments
Starting point is 00:32:41 became frequent. Eventually, we agreed that we needed a breather. We decided to rent an Airbnb for a full week, just the two of us, hoping to relax and reconnect. We found a cozy place in a small town outside Asheville, North Carolina. The listing highlighted its quiet setting, a large backyard, and its proximity to hiking trails. Exactly what we were looking for. The host seemed friendly in his messages. He mentioned almost in passing that sometimes you could hear knocking coming from the basement pipes, but he assured us it was nothing serious. We took it as a simple quark, so we didn't think much of it. We arrived one afternoon as the sun was starting to set. The house looked exactly like the photos, a charming porch, warm interiors, and lots of natural light. In the kitchen there was a note
Starting point is 00:33:39 from the host with instructions about trash pickup, the Wi-Fi password, and a reminder not to worry about the basement if we heard strange noises. I admit that last part made me a little uneasy, but Ben brushed it off. All old houses make noises, he said. For the first three nights, everything was normal. Sometimes we heard light knocking around bedtime, but it stopped after a few minutes, so we didn't pay attention. We never went down to the basement. We had no reason to. There was no need to do laundry or anything urgent, and the host hadn't mentioned anything important about the place. We spent our days hiking trails and our nights cooking together or watching TV. It was nice, finally, to have time for ourselves. Then the fourth night arrived. We were getting
Starting point is 00:34:33 ready for bed when the knocking came back. Louder and more rhythm. make them before. Ben paused to the show we were watching and looked at me seriously. That's not the pipes, he said. A chill ran through me, but I nodded. We went down together to the basement door and turned on the light. The wooden stairs creaked under our feet. The air was colder down there, and the atmosphere felt unsettling. Boxes and old furniture were stacked against the walls. And at the back there was a metal door with a rusted padlock. The sound was clearly coming from behind that door. We stood still, not knowing what to do. We tried to call the host, but his phone went straight to voicemail. We left a rush message and went back upstairs.
Starting point is 00:35:22 Nervous. We barely slept that night, imagining all kinds of scenarios. The next mornings when he finally answered, we asked him directly about the metal door. He seemed annoyed saying it was just an old storage room that had been locked for years, and that we shouldn't worry. Ben pressed a little more, but the man cut the conversation short, repeating that there's just junk in there. That night, around ten, the knocks came back, and this time they sounded different. They no longer seemed like pipe noises but sharp banging, like someone pounding from the other side. Ben and I looked at each other without saying a word, and we went to the basement. The banging was louder, more desperate. We knocked on the metal door, feeling stupid but terrified. Then we heard it, a weak human voice,
Starting point is 00:36:17 barely a whisper, shaking, asking for help. Fear turned into urgency. We ran to the car for a metal bar Ben kept, and when we returned to the basement, the noise had stopped, though we could hear ragged breathing behind the door. Ben told me to step back and tried to force the padlock, but it wouldn't budge. I grabbed a hammer from a shelf, and we started hitting it until the lock broke. When we opened the door, the smell of confinement and stale air hit us. Inside, curled up on the floor, was a middle-aged man, maybe around 40. He was pale, dehydrated and trembling. We helped him to his feet. He could barely speak, but he managed to say he was a relative of the host. Something terrible had happened between them, a family fight from what we understood,
Starting point is 00:37:10 and he insisted the host had kept him locked in there. We called the police immediately. Within about 15 minutes, a patrol car arrived. The officers took our statements and helped the man out of the basement so he could be taken away by ambulance. Shortly after more officers arrived and told us they would locate the host immediately. It was obvious we couldn't stay in that house. We packed our things in a hurry, with a feeling of disgust and horror at the thought that we had slept for days directly above someone trapped there. The police assured us we had done the right thing, but the guilt didn't go away. That night we drove to a motel in a nearby town.
Starting point is 00:37:51 We barely said anything on the way. We were just trying to process it. The next day we got a call from the officers. They had arrested the host, and the rescued man was safe with his family. We were grateful for the news, confirmed that we would be returning home. And that was how, abruptly, what was supposed to be our vacation to reconnect came to an end. Story 7. This happened in 2005 when I was only 10 years old.
Starting point is 00:38:27 I lived in a small town in Iowa, the kind where kids could walk around the streets without much worry. My house was about four or five blocks from the neighborhood park. Normally my mom or my dad picked me up, but that afternoon they were both delayed at work, so I decided to walk home. It was a late summer afternoon. The sun was still shining, though the shadows were getting longer and longer. I felt a slight nervousness, but I kept telling myself everything would be fine. I walked along the sidewalk with my backpack hanging off one shoulder, noticing how quiet the
Starting point is 00:39:04 neighborhood was. I didn't see anyone else on the street, not even a kid on a bike. That was when I heard something. At first it was almost imperceptible, the crunch of gravel. I turned around and I could just make out a tall figure. He was wearing dark pants and maybe a jacket. My memory is fuzzy on the details. but I clearly remember how he slowed down the moment I looked at him.
Starting point is 00:39:31 I couldn't see his face and that deeply unsettled me. I sped up, trying to stay calm. My heart started pounding. I decided to take a different route than usual, hoping to lose him or run into a neighbor. But every time I looked back, he was still there, keeping a certain distance, as if he didn't want to get too close.
Starting point is 00:39:54 But he clearly didn't want to lose sight of him. me. I turned a corner and saw an old abandoned house I recognized. It had been empty for years, with bordered up windows and a porch that had partially sunk in. In that moment, hiding there seemed like the safest option. I thought the man wouldn't dare follow me inside. I slipped through a gap in the fence and snuck around behind the house. The inside smelled like dampness and dust. A narrow hallway led to what had once been the living room. The floor covered in debris, chunks of plaster, trash, and an old mattress tossed off to one side. My hands were shaking as I leaned against the wall to stay on my feet. I was alone in the dimness, hoping that man wouldn't come in. That was
Starting point is 00:40:43 when I saw it. In a corner, partially covered by a piece of collapsed ceiling, lay what looked like an elderly man. His clothes were dirty and torn. He wasn't moving. For a moment I thought he was sleeping, but when I got a little closer, I realized he wasn't breathing. His skin had a pale sunken tone. It looked like he had been there for quite a long time. An icy terror ran through me. My eyes filled with tears. Suddenly, I heard footsteps. They were coming from the hallway, slow, measured, and each step crunched over the broken remnants on the floor. I felt like I couldn't breathe. I thought about the man who had been following me. Was he inside now, too? I didn't have the courage to look. I just wanted to get out.
Starting point is 00:41:35 I ran, tearing across the living room filled with dust and broken wood. I threw myself through a shattered window and landed in the backyard. Something cut my leg, maybe a splinter, but I didn't even feel it. I just ran. I burst out onto the street. gasping, my heart slamming in my chest. I looked back. The yard was empty, the house silent, the porchboards intact. There was no one. I kept running until I spotted a patrol car in front of a small corner store. A police officer was talking with the owner on the sidewalk. I ran up to them
Starting point is 00:42:15 crying, trying to explain through sobs. A man had been following me and there was a dead body in the abandoned house. The officer looked at me with surprise, then concern. He opened the passenger door and told me to get in. Inside the car I was shaking so hard I could barely speak. He asked me simple questions, where I lived, whether I was hurt, while calling for backup on the radio. Another officer arrived shortly after and headed toward the old house. The one who had picked me up said he would take me to my parents. When we got there, my mother, was on the porch, pacing back and forth, frantic. She must have left work and noticed I was missing. The officer explained what had happened, patted me on the shoulder, and told me to rest.
Starting point is 00:43:06 Then he left to meet up with his partner at the house. I never learned the full story. I heard my mother call the police station later, but they didn't give her details. They said they had investigated the place, but they didn't confirm anything about the body or the man who had been following me. My father tried to reassure me, saying maybe it had been a homeless man who had died there a long time ago, but that didn't explain who the stranger was who had been watching me or why he was following me. To this day, I can't walk past an abandoned house without that image flooding back. The old man's body, alone, motionless, and the question that has followed me ever since. Did the man who followed me have something to do with him, or was he just a stranger
Starting point is 00:43:54 who, for some reason, chose me? I never found out, and living with that maybe, has been all these years the most unsettling part of all. Story 8. I was 13 in the summer of 2022, when my parents decided to treat us to a vacation, a full week on a cruise departing from Miami, Florida. It was going to be an incredible adventure, my first time on a ship. The night before the trip, we stayed in a small hotel near the port. I remember standing at the window watching the huge cruise ships gliding over the water, feeling an indescribable excitement at the thought that the next day, one of them would be ours. Embarcation day was a whirlwind of lines, ID checks, and smiling employees with almost exaggerated enthusiasm.
Starting point is 00:44:55 I couldn't take my eyes off the massive ship. My dad, Bill, joked that we'd need a map just to find our cabin. My mom, Sarah, was fascinated by the buffets, sure that we'd come home several pounds heavier. Looking back, I wish I hadn't separated from them for even a second during that trip. The first days at sea were exactly what I imagined. crowded pools, huge dining rooms, constant noise, and packed game rooms. I spent a lot of time exploring the ship on my own, trying to memorize the corridors and shortcuts between decks. On the second night, as I was heading back to our cabin, I noticed someone behind a row of lounge
Starting point is 00:45:39 chairs, a man in a dark hoodie. He was just outside the reach of the lights, so I couldn't see his face clearly. I tried not to think. much of it. There were thousands of people on board and plenty wore hoodies to protect themselves from the sea breeze. Still, something made me nervous, a feeling that's hard to describe like I was being watched. When I got to the cabin, I felt stupid for getting scared over a random stranger. The next day we went on a cruise-organized shore excursion in Nassau. I was excited to walk through the colorful markets and try the local food. While we waited to board, we waited to board. a tourist van. I looked toward the pier, and there he was again, the man in the hoodie leaning
Starting point is 00:46:25 against a railing. I couldn't see his face, but my instinct screamed that it was the same person. Why was he following me, or was I imagining it? During the excursion, I tried to enjoy everything, the queen's staircase, the old colonial forts, lunch on a terrace, but I kept looking around, for that figure. I didn't see him again, and eventually I tried to push the worry out of my mind. That night, after dinner, I told my mother I was going to the arcade. She and my dad wanted to attend a musical show, so I ended up alone. The ship's hallways were strangely empty. Most people were still eating her at the show. Suddenly, I heard footsteps behind me. I turned around, and there he was.
Starting point is 00:47:19 Just a few yards away, half his face hidden under the hood. I froze for a few seconds and neither of us moved. Then he turned into a side corridor and disappeared. My stomach dropped. I started walking fast, almost running, until I reached the arcade. I stayed there pretending to play, pressing buttons on machines I didn't even care about, just to feel like I was.
Starting point is 00:47:47 wasn't alone. When I finally returned to the cabin, I locked the door and tried not to think about it. The last night of the cruise arrived. The ship was anchored near Half Moon K, a private island. Before going to sleep, I decided to step out for a moment to get a soda. I figured the cafe would be empty. The air was cool, the sea dark and silent. The sound of the wind almost drowned out the echo of my own footsteps. And then suddenly, I heard others behind me. I turned around. He was there, so close that I instinctively stepped back. I couldn't see his face completely, but in the dim light I could make out what looked like a twisted smile. He leaned slightly toward me and in a low voice said, You're lucky. I changed my plan. My heart slammed in my chest.
Starting point is 00:48:43 I backed up, stumbled, and when I regained my balance, he was gone. He had disappeared into the shadows. I wanted to scream to call for help, but no sound came out. I just ran. I ran without looking back until I reached the main deck where there were more people and more lights. I didn't see him again. The next morning, the ship docked in Miami. My parents and I disembarked as if nothing had had happened.
Starting point is 00:49:13 happened. I didn't tell them the truth. I only said I'd felt nervous at night, blaming it on seasickness or the ship's hallways. But deep down, I knew it wasn't my imagination. And even now, when I think of the sea, I remember that voice whispering in the dark. You're lucky. I changed my plan.
