Starting point is 00:00:01 Hey, over 25 years ago on September 29, 1998, we watched a brainy girl with curly hair drop everything to follow a guy she only kind of knew to college. My name is Amanda Foreman, though maybe, you know me better as Megan Rotundi, the roommate with the mysterious box. I'm teaming up with my Felicity husband, Greg Grunberg, and the ringer's Juliet Litman, to revisit our favorite moments from the show and talk to the people who helped shape it. The rewatch begins on March 13th. Listen now to Dear Felicity on Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.

Starting point is 00:01:55 I see fire. Well, now that is a very small drop in a very, very large, And welcome to House of R. A Ringerverse podcast on the Ringer Podcast Network. I'm Mallory Rubin and it is my absolute pleasure to invite you not only back to Westeros and the Jedi Temple and the TVA and all the other places we're going to go today, but also to House of ours newish podcast feed. Joining me today, reminding me that my eyes can deceive me. We must. Trust not trust them. It is my favorite.
Starting point is 00:02:55 Jedi Master and New York Times bestselling author, Joanna Robinson. It just feels right, she says. Mallory Rubin, I'm so excited to not draft with you, but to meter with you, this hype that we have. Love a meter. 24 spring, summer, mash of the seasons.
Starting point is 00:03:18 Yes. We're here for one of our, I think, genuinely and truly favorite seasonal traditions. We love a hype meter. We love to ignore the actual, what does the calendar tell us a season is? Guidelines that all other humans follow and just do it the way that we believe it should be done.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Correct. But before we explain the rules of the hype meter and actually share our list, before we give Homelanders some nourishing milk, some quick programming reminders. Overrun the ringer verse. Mint Edition, monster bracket, it's up, it's waiting for you in your feeds, it's a blast, check it out if you haven't yet.
Starting point is 00:03:57 Then head back into the Ringervverse later in the week for again a double midnight boys. Pugh-Pew. Pew, pew, yeah. A double pupeu. Invincible Season 2 finale and X-Men 97 check-in on Thursday. And then Monkey Man Instant Reaction on Friday. Over here on the House of Ar on Friday, we will also be, back with you for a Captain America, the Winter Soldier, 10-year anniversary pod. It has been 10
Starting point is 00:04:30 years since our shared favorite MCU movie, hit theaters. And of course, we are delighted to use that as an excuse to revisit this film together. Can't wait. Genuinely cannot wait. Correct. And how can people follow along? Oh, my God. I'm so thrilled in honor that you asked me this question today. Listen, we're doing like a top 10 moment celebration of Captain America which soldier is the plan for Friday. So I'm really excited for that as like an emotional storytelling journey. Listen, why don't you just follow the pod, House of R and the Ring of Earth, just subscribe to both? Why not while you're at it? But if that feels too onerous,
Starting point is 00:05:11 maybe like you want to follow us on social. We're on Twitter. We're on TikTok. We're on you know, Facebook and Instagram. And I received some sound equipment in the mail mysteriously from Arjuna, which means we're going to be even more on social than ever before. That was a little surprise drop in my mailbox that I got. So that's exciting. More to come on that. And also, listen, Hobbes and Dragons at gmail.com.
Starting point is 00:05:43 We're already getting questions for the spring mailbag that we're going to be doing next. next week, we've already received questions for that. So send us your questions, comments, concerns to hobbits and dragons at gmail.com. Also, your winter soldier thoughts. We got some great winter soldier emails already as well. So hobbits and dragons at gmail.mell. We'll be back on the email beat in the next few episodes. Fantastic. Last programming reminder, it's the friendly neighborhood spoiler warning. And look, it's a, it's a hype meter, which means it's a preview pod. We're looking ahead to some of the things that we are anticipating the most for the next few months.
Starting point is 00:06:21 And we don't know what's going to happen in those things. So will we talk about what we've glimpsed in trailers? Yes. Will we talk about some casting nuggets? Yes. But that's it. This is a pretty safe episode on the spoiler front. We're all just looking ahead to the things that we can't wait to share together.
Starting point is 00:06:40 All right. Hipe meter rules. They will be familiar to anyone who has heard a house of our hype meter before. But let's quickly run through how the 2004 spring and summer height meter will work. First process. We're counting down. It's a 10 to one countdown. We will be building toward our top pick.
Starting point is 00:07:01 Our lists are, as always, secret. I don't know what Joanna has selected for her height meter. She does not know what I've selected. I would say I feel confident that the top of our lists are very similar. I'm expecting a lot of overlap in the top. maybe top five, certainly top four, but beyond that, I don't know. We might have a, we might have some variance early in the list, I think. If we have picked the same title, we will discuss it, as always, at the higher of the two spots. So for example, if I have put
Starting point is 00:07:38 Rebel Moon Part 2, the Scargiver, number 10, you won't stop talking about it. You just like are endlessly talking about your love for. Rebel Moon franchise. Yeah. Yeah. And so like, and you know, so of you, so I'm thinking, okay, what if I have it at 10 and you have it at one? When and how would we discuss it?
Starting point is 00:07:56 We would discuss it at number one where you had selected it. Just as an example of how this could go. Because I am also a big moonhead. Big, big moonhead. We call herself the Looney's. We love it. We love it. Eligibility.
Starting point is 00:08:13 Genre picks. That means if we could potentially cover a property on the House of R, On the ringer verse, it can be selected today. So no, the bear, which comes out in June, is not going to be part of this. Hype meter, though, of course, that will be covered with great jubilation and joy across the Ringer podcast network this summer. But genre tales, sci-fi, fantasy, comic book, storytelling, etc., etc. That is our action adventure.
Starting point is 00:08:49 Okay. That's our selection. That's our menu today. Our delicious morsels that we will be picking from. Sometimes we get into whether something is eligible on the annual hype draft. That rarely becomes a point of contention on a hype meter, which is really just about all the things we can't wait to talk about together. So I don't expect us to be an issue. How is having fun liking things, you know?
Starting point is 00:09:17 Calendar. All right. Here's how it's going to work today. For our purposes, here is what spring and summer mean. You might be saying to yourself, is this a thing that we need to explain to us? Guess what? Yeah. Yeah, it is.
Starting point is 00:09:34 Is it the mine count? Like, what is our, what is our preferred orientation? All right. Here's what we're calling spring and summer today. Yeah. Anything that premieres from today. Yes. When this pod is being published, April 2nd.
Starting point is 00:09:51 through August 31st. That's the eligibility window for spring and summer. Technically, yes. That's what the Aztex as it was written. We are leaving three weeks of September summer. Yeah. Out of the equation today. But that just means anything that's eventually released in those September weeks
Starting point is 00:10:11 will be eligible for our eventual fall hype meter, which is a thrill to already think about. Okay. Eat shit calendars. That's basically how this net's. how this nets out always. Correct, correct. One point of clarity here.
Starting point is 00:10:25 Anything that concludes in that time frame but has started previously is not eligible, which means we cannot select X-Men 97 or Bad Batch or Invincible for the hype meter day. This is just about things that are yet to release.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Okay. The last rule, the wild card slot, we've done this in the past. Nine out of the 10 picks that you make today have to have confirmed release dates between April 2nd and August 31st. Now, things can always change,
Starting point is 00:10:55 but at the moment of her recording, nine out of 10 must be confirmed for the eligibility window. We will each be allowed one wild card pick for something that is not yet confirmed for that period of time, but could potentially wind up there, could reasonably be expected to wind up there.
Starting point is 00:11:09 The old coming soon slot. The old coming soon slot. It's phrasing. Got it. Okay. You do not have to use a wild card pick, though. If you want to use all 10 of your spots on things that are definitely confirmed, that's your prerogative. Anything that did not make our top 10, but we want to quickly highlight at the end,
Starting point is 00:11:26 we will do so in a lightning round, honorable mentions, rapid fire, extravaganza. And that's it. Those are the rules. Easy. Couldn't be easier. Couldn't be clearer. We're just bending the rules of time and space. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:39 And that's fine. But you know what? Again, we said it was a genre pod. So feels right. Should we dive in? Let's do it. Joanna. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:58 Kick things off for us. with your number 10. Okay. I promise I mostly followed the rules today. But I do have two smuggles. Great start. And they're at the bottom. So like that's where they belong.
Starting point is 00:12:13 Some smuggles at the bottom, right? Okay. We're going to call this one a South by Southwest double feature. Love it. Okay. And I will start by asking you this. Do you have Monkey Man hire on your list? I do.
Starting point is 00:12:26 Okay. Then we'll return to this when we get to Monkey Man. on your list. Back to you, Mallory Rubin. It makes it seem like it's not even a Joanna smuggle then. It's just like, what wonderful start? Wow. Oh, but you don't tell me, you're not telling me the second thing.
Starting point is 00:12:40 We're saving them. Yeah. Okay. All right. I feel, sometimes I say I feel confident about something being or not being on your list. Yeah. I am prepared to say that I feel certain.
Starting point is 00:12:53 Yeah. That my number 10 is not on your list. Oh. Certain. Is it about the. Is it about the Baltimore Orioles? No, because then I think you would have it. Because, as you know.
Starting point is 00:13:09 Are they going to do, like, do they do like a Star Wars Night? They do. Yeah. Should we put the Baltimore Orioles Star Wars Night on our hype meeting? Yeah. They've done Star Wars Nights. They've done Marvel nights. Right, right, right.
Starting point is 00:13:21 An absolutely wonderful ringer fan gave me an Adley Ruchman, Captain America Bumblehead, the giveaway from their Marvel night, at the rewatchables DC show. And it was very sweet and wonderful. Oh my God. Great stuff. You're beloved figure. Lamentably none of that has anything to do with my number 10 pick, though.
Starting point is 00:13:41 Okay. I wish it did. My son never show mercy. Craven the hunter. Let's go. Okay, but the only reason it's not on my list is I knew you were going to put on your list, honestly. I know.
Starting point is 00:13:57 I knew. Not the only reason, but a reason. Okay. Hit me with your craving. take. Is this a bit? Is this sincere? It doesn't matter. This is the tradition of the 10 spot on a hype meter. Yeah. Yeah. Listen, this is such a better bit than your Aquaman bit. It's a bit that I'm willing to go. If you want me to podcast somewhere weird about Craven, I will. Yes. I want you to podcast with me inside of the, like, divot of it between abs. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. Yeah. The old
Starting point is 00:14:28 Lab divot pod. Can't wait. On August 30th, just inside of the eligibility window for today's podcast, we will be treated collectively to what I am hoping is an instant cinematic classic. Yeah. This film has been delayed. We have been waiting. We have been sustained by the glimpses of those abs on the poster and the just frankly
Starting point is 00:14:51 astonishing amount of blood in the red band trailer. This is, of course, part of Sony's Spider-Man. universe, which is, in ways both good and bad, the gift that keeps on giving, undeniably. Sometimes we get actually fun and good movies, like the Venom movies. Sometimes we get properties that defy comprehension, like Morbius and Madam Webb, which will crave and be, Joe. We don't know, and that's part of the fun. It is the first R-rated film in Sony's Spider-Man universe. That Red Band trailer has 27 million views on YouTube. You love counting a trailer view.
Starting point is 00:15:32 I do. I love a trailer review. Whether it means anything I couldn't tell you, but I love it. Yeah. Aaron Taylor Johnson. Pietro himself. Yeah. Out of the athleisure wear and into the Craven fit.
Starting point is 00:15:46 This cast, I just, I really want this movie to be that shit good. Maybe it won't be, but I'm holding out. up until we know definitively that it's not. I cannot wait to share it with you. We, every now and then, prioritize seeing something in person together in the theaters, and I want us to consider me can creep in one of those things.
Starting point is 00:16:09 Yes. Done. Follow question. Are you worried that either the sweat or the, like, glycer and grease from the ab divot will interfere with our recording equipment if we decide to pot from there? Steve, can you start looking into some underwater recording equipment? Maybe you already have from back when we almost did the aquaman pod that way.
Starting point is 00:16:34 It's possible we're ready to go. We need some moisture wicking equipment in order to be able to record from Aaron Taylor Johnson. Ab divot. I have made ab-based calibrations. Great. Thank you, Steve. Perfect. Wonderful.
Starting point is 00:16:49 A professional. What a team we have here. Yeah. All right, Joe, that was my number 10. Any thoughts, concerns? No, optimism reigns supreme. I think I really do think this one could go either way. I'm not even, this isn't even a bit.
Starting point is 00:17:04 I really do think Craven could be a fun, fine time of the movies. I actually agree. I think this could be a good movie. Aquaman I never had hope for, but this one I'm like, maybe. Could be. Okay, but it's not on your list. And that's just something that we'll have to confront and carry. That's okay.
Starting point is 00:17:19 I will grasp your little hand in mine if you want to see it together. Okay. I am confident that my number nine is not so confident that my number nine is not on your list. Interesting. And that is because it is a horror movie and you hate horror. August 16th into the dog days of summer, alien Romulus. I do have this on my honorable mentions. Okay.
Starting point is 00:17:46 Yes. Here's why I'm excited about this. And I haven't been like thrilled necessarily about every direction that the, um, alien franchise has gone in the last few years. Though, you know, any time with Michael Fastbender, nay, two Michael Fastbenders, great time. This is outside of that continuity. This is Alien Romulus from Fede Alvarez, who was a great horror director who did the 2013 Evil Dead and the 2016 Don't Breathe, which was an incredible, like, low budge,
Starting point is 00:18:19 great concept horror movie. And I'm really excited about this one. trailer came out a couple weeks ago. We did talk about it a little bit on, like, briefly on trial by content. But I said there, the reason I was excited about it, it seems like a part of a trend of giving, like, horror or genre IP to interesting directors. And in some cases, doing like sort of a low-stakes, Hulu drop, which is what happened with, like, Dan Tractorberg's Prey, which was an incredible little, like, short, breezy romp through the Predator universe. Or this was an IP, but I just this weekend watched Brian Duffield's No One Will Save You from 23, which was another great like straight to Hulu, well, simultaneously Hulu theater release,
Starting point is 00:19:08 high concept, low budget, like alien movie, which was wonderful. And this Alien Romulus is supposed to be straight to Hulu. But they're like, actually, let's try putting this in theaters, which is a huge vote of confidence for it. But I think it's one of those, it's very much like, doesn't have a lot of, doesn't have like really any very well-known actors in it. Just like cup people on a spaceship and like scary aliens sort of flinging their little squirmy bodies around the joint. Sounds like a really fun, scary time at the movies to me. And I will not ask you to come with me because I know how you feel about horror. But I think this is just like a really fun direction to take IP in.
Starting point is 00:19:49 You're not dealing with a ton of continuity or lore or anything like that. You're just like, this is a fun world. Let's get a brilliant director and let him have a little romp in it. So that's alien Romulus, but maybe let's call it rompulis is what I'm looking for. Rompulous. I'm into this branding. I love this. I love the alien franchise.
Starting point is 00:20:11 I was really excited to see this trailer. I thought the trailer looked great. It does look like it might be too horror-centric for me. But I do want to see it. I will probably wait for the review from you and some other trusted pals before I decide whether I can see it in the theaters or need to wait wait to see it in the comfort of my home. But I will watch this movie and I will be excited to do so. There feels like a couch watch while like clutching Halo experience for you. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:39 Curled under a blanket. Yeah. Though watching a horror movie at home can actually be more perilous for me because then Adam like torments me because he loves horror movies and I'm a coward. We'll see. We'll cross that bridge when we get there. that he grid strewn with alien tentacles and severed body parts. Have I ever told you the story of the first time that I watched The Ring in college? Have I told you that story?
Starting point is 00:21:04 No. I was talking to my friend on the phone. I was talking to my friend on the phone. I was in the dorms and I was talking my friend on the phone and I was like, hey, I'm about to go watch the ring with some people I'd never seen it. We, like, rented it. We're going to watch it. He's like, okay, hung on the phone. He like went and Googled the runtime of the movie and then he called me right.
Starting point is 00:21:20 it was right when it was over. That's just like... It's not nice. It was horrifying. It's not a nice thing to do. That same friend, he and I saw Blair Witch Project together and his... I think this is a true story. His grandma stacked like sticks and rocks outside of his door the next morning when he like...
Starting point is 00:21:38 Because like someone told her to to scare him. Anyway. What does Adam do to you? Just like jump scare you? Well, we don't really ever watch our movies together anymore because I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, can't handle them. And he loves them so long ago, many moons ago, we made an agreement that we would try to watch one horror movie together every year for his birthday.
Starting point is 00:22:01 This was a request of his. And I like to think that I am either a loving and generous partner, at least someone who occasionally pretends to be. And so I said, okay. You are. His first pick was the dissent. We watched it. I was so scared and disturbed.
Starting point is 00:22:23 And I begged him to just be nice and kind and supportive and not be a dick. And I was getting ready for bed later that night. And I was in the bedroom. And I turned around and all the lights were off. And I just see this like, this is not going to translate on a podcast. No, I'm seeing it. It's kind of like swinging shadowy form in the doorway. He was doing bad people at you.
Starting point is 00:22:50 And it honestly was so terrifying that I have since then not ever consented to watch a horror movie with him again. As you know, my tolerance, my horror threshold has shifted over the last few years. Like, my tolerance is higher, but a true, true, true, true horror movie is still a tough sell for me. All right. Not a movie appearing on my list today. I will report back on Alien Row. Please do. All right.
Starting point is 00:23:15 Here's my number nine. You might have this. I'm not sure. Dark Matter, the impending Apple TV series, which is coming out apparently on May 8th, which is really soon. I did not realize this was quite so soon. Very exciting to discover this. Apple TV, we've talked about this before on many prior pods, the sci-fi enthusiast streamer. They are so deeply invested in original sci-fi stories, sci-fi adaptations. Obviously, we've talked about many of them. Severance, Foundation, Silo, for all mankind, invasion, etc., etc., etc. This show, Dark Matter, is based on Blake Crouch's novel, which I have not read, but Noe is very popular and widely loved. He's involved with the show, showrunning. This is a nine-episode series.
Starting point is 00:24:09 The cast is awesome. Joel Edgerton. Love Joel Edgerton. Our wife, Jennifer Connolly, Jimmy Simpson. Here's the logline, the official logline from Apple. Based on Blake Crouch's international bestseller, Jason Dessen, I think this is pronounced Desson, I do not know, is abducted into an alternate version of his life.
Starting point is 00:24:32 To get back to his true family, he embarks on a harrowing journey to save them from the most terrifying foe imaginable himself. I'm in. Okay. This sounds like a fascinating concept. The cast looks great. It seems moody.
Starting point is 00:24:45 I'm always interested in checking out an Apple sci-fi show. So I'm excited to see this. I like I like to look for a slot somewhere on the height meter to not just go with all of the big IP offerings. And so this is a, a spot and perhaps the only spot where I did that. Apple shows are so fascinating because either they hit or they like don't exist. And I'll be very curious to see which one this is. But yeah, you make a good case. Jennifer Connolly, love of my life. One of the greats. Truly one of the grades. All right.
Starting point is 00:25:20 What is your number eight, Joanna? I welcome you all to my house of reads slash into club spot. One of these is a straightforward, straightforward, like, easy sell. And the other one is a, I'm just going to do a quick smuggle of a book that actually came out already in February. I just want to shout out the Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett, who wrote Foundry Side and a number of others. And this is a sort of like Watson and Holmes murder mystery, but make it fantasy sort of thing. And it's real good. And it's the beginning of a series.
Starting point is 00:25:58 So I really recommend that one. That one already came out. So what's coming out? It's April 2nd coming out on April 9th. So just a week from now. Soon, yeah. Is the great Lee Bardugo who wrote Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows and a number of other great books that are beloved, has written a new book called The Familiar, and is set
Starting point is 00:26:23 during the Spanish Golden Age. And I haven't had a chance to read yet, though. I will be getting a copy, I think, later this week. But it is, it deals with, it's like historical fantasy. our protagonist who has magical powers is also Jewish in the era of Spain where like the Inquisition is happening and like, oh, yet it is not safe to be Jewish in Spain at this time. And in order to navigate and like has a sort of target on her back because of her powers as well. And in order to survive is forced to align with his character called The Familiar. And from what I read of the early reviews, this is sort of like Lee Bardugo dipping her toe into like the world of sort of vampire-esque stories.
Starting point is 00:27:16 So this new character that she's... Lee Bardugo, who created the great Casbrecker from Six of Crows or The Darkling from Shadow and Bone. I feel like you don't even have to have read Shadow and Bone to know that the character called The Darkling is like something people care a lot about. So she's created a lot of intriguing characters. This is how one reviewer
Starting point is 00:27:36 described, I think the name is San Angel, the like sort of vampire-esque character in this, felt like, quote, a cross between Ariel from the Tempest, the phantom from Phantom of the Opera, with a sprinkling of Howl from Howl's Moving Castle. Amen. Never been more in in my life. So this is coming out, April 9th, the familiar Lee Bardugo. I will be, this is not why I picked this, but also I will be moderating in conversation. with Lee Bardugo at City Arts and Lectures in San Francisco on Friday, April 19th.
Starting point is 00:28:11 That's just randomly. That just happened yesterday. This was already on my list. But I'm really excited because I love her and I love her works. And City Arts and Lectures is the best. So those tickets are available, but you want to come see us. But that's not why this is on the list. It's on the list because Lee Bardugo is a queen.
Starting point is 00:28:26 And everyone should be excited for this. Yep. Great pick. There we go. It's always a joy to go to the House of Reeds. I know. I said that. Um, even though it's my choice.
Starting point is 00:28:38 But yeah, I mean, we love books. And love them. Love them. Have you heard of them? They're great. Have you? Have you? I've heard of books.
Starting point is 00:28:46 Books. For my number eight, I will be taking you not into the House of Reads, but into the vault. Fallout. I'm excited for this show. Tell me. Yeah. I figured, I figured it wouldn't be.
Starting point is 00:29:01 So I have not played a second of a prior fallout game, but I, I love. am deeply interested in the continually evolving video game adaptation landscape. Obviously, like post last of us, it's a fascinating moment for that. Where are we with any given property on the prestige TV scale? This is coming out very soon as well, April 11th. It's on Amazon Prime. It's eight episodes. and it is a binge drop,
Starting point is 00:29:38 which I do not understand, I will say, this seems like a puzzling choice, but it is the choice that they have made. So we'll get to watch all of this in one weekend. Of course, the button mash crew
Starting point is 00:29:53 will be covering this over on the ringerverse. And in addition to the video game adaptation era, it is, of course, also always the apocalyptic story. era. Love an apocalyptic tale. Love a dystopian tale. Joe, your Westworld duo is here. Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan. Bethesda Game Studios involved in the production. So that, especially like given how heavily involved Noddy Dog was with Last of Us feels like an encouraging thing to see. As I understand it,
Starting point is 00:30:27 Steve, you're an expert on Fallout. So correct me if this is wrong. This is an original story that's set in the continuity of the game landscape. This is not a one-to-one recreation of one of the storylines from the games. So that's interesting as well. And just an incredible number of House of Our Patriot Saints
Starting point is 00:30:46 in this cast. Walton Gagins. He's here as Cooper Howard and the ghoul. The ghoul doesn't have a nose. But you can immediately tell it's Walton Guggins the second he speaks. And honestly, even before that,
Starting point is 00:31:00 it's just an amazing aura. You see him in the trailer. It is. El Pernell, Yellow Jackets Hive Rise, is here as Lucy, who is exiting the vault, 219 years after the Earth fell to all the nukes. Michael Emerson is here, Joanna. I mean, what do Lost Heads need to know other than that? Zach Cherry's here. Matt Barry is here playing a robot.
Starting point is 00:31:28 Ramin Jawadi is composing. It's just a lot of our faves. The trailers, I thought both trailers looked good and fun. I thought that the second trailer was the one that really hooked me. I was like, I'm excited to watch the show. So I'm just genuinely really looking forward to seeing it. I hope it's good. I hope it's something that people who love the games,
Starting point is 00:31:42 these are among the most popular games in the history of video games, feel like is a worthy screen adaptation and expansion of the franchise. And I look forward to seeing what it's all about. Do you have any other video game adaptations on your list today? I have an honorable mentor. I also have an honorable mention. Okay. Yeah. All right. Okay. Exciting. So that was my eight. And I will just tell you that my seven, even though it's your turn to reveal your seven, is Monkey Man. So up to you, which order you want to take your next reveal in. If you want to hit your 10 and my seven and then do your seven first, or if you want to do your seven first, and then we can talk about Monkey Man and whatever your smuggle is together. Up to you. I'll do my seven first. And then I'll hand Monkey Man to you and then we'll do my smuggle. Um, Well, actually, you might boot mine higher. I don't know where you put Furiosa.
Starting point is 00:32:43 Is she higher on your list? Yes, only just. All right. Let's go back over here. What a twist. Yeah. I'm really surprised. Wow.
Starting point is 00:32:51 Monkey Man time. Monkey man. We had the absolute pleasure of seeing this together. The honor. It's just a thrill to be able to grip each other's arms as we watched various astonishingly violent moments in this film. As we watched Deb Patel put various items through various people's faces, as how I would describe. Yes. And then as we watched Dev Patel in real life on the Southby stage after the film's premiere,
Starting point is 00:33:21 cried, tears by the standing ovation he received. It was really sweet. We got to see this together at Southby. We had a blast. It was awesome to hear Dev talk about the process of making this movie. I think we and everybody else were genuinely awed by this. Like the number of hurdles that this movie had to clear just to exist, let alone to be... Let alone for Deppatelle to be alive and well on the South by Southwest stage, given all the things he like broke, busted, and, like, shattered in the course of making this movie. Man, it was really like harrowing to hear the recounting of every step in that journey. the triple-depth aspect of this is obviously like one of the very fun things about it. This is Dev Patel's directorial debut.
Starting point is 00:34:08 Dev wrote the movie and Dev stars in the movie. He is the action lead. We're not going to get into like the particulars of the movie on the hype meter, even though we have seen it. I was really impressed with him as a director. And I'm excited for people to see that. I thought the choreography of the fight scenes and the way the camera moved through the action and through the crowd, et cetera, was really visually stimulating. We'll talk more about the story once people have seen the film.
Starting point is 00:34:43 I had fun at the movies with you and our other pals, and I'm excited for people to see Monkey Man. The early reviews are positive. I think this is going to be something that people really enjoy seeing and sharing together. and like we'll be talking about the various kills and aspects of the story for years and eons to come. I think some of this is going to rise into like the John Wick with a pencil lore level very quickly. And, you know, I'll also just say I did enjoy in addition to the violence and the action, like some of the quieter, more family-centric moments of the story I thought were really tender. And how all of that blends together in the movie, we won't get into now.
Starting point is 00:35:25 but there's quite a bit going on in the film here. Okay, you had Monkey Man at 10. Tell me your Monkey Man thoughts and then tell me what else you have paired with Monkey Man. I think that Monkey Paw who, and this film had like a long road to the end cut that it got. Jordan Peel did some work on it and all that sort of stuff. And I think Monkey Paw is really like very intelligently marketing this as like a, don't you love Deb Patel? Look at this thing. He poured his lifeblood in.
Starting point is 00:35:54 Don't you want to support him? I agree. I love DeF Patel, and I want everyone to see this movie and support DeF Patel who tried to kill himself in order to make this movie for you. Are you not entertained? That emotional aspect aside, I would say this movie has gotten a ton of John Wick comps, and it makes sense to me for a number of reasons, one of which is like John Wick emerged out of Fantastic Fest in Austin.
Starting point is 00:36:22 It had that sort of like, you know, genre. festival out of Austin, Texas, buzz and seemingly came out of nowhere because it was directed by these stunt guys and all this sort of stuff like that. And so I can see the John Wick parallels. I think John Wick is a much tidier movie than this movie wound up being because I think Dev just wanted to do everything and who can blame him. It reminds me of like a season of a Netflix show where they're not at all certain they're getting a second season. So they're like, well, it's just going to do it all, you know. And so when it's good, it's very good and when it's stylish is very stylish. And Dev is just captivating always. But there's just like, you know, there's some shagginess to it, which is not a bad thing on a, on a debut film from someone who has come up in the industry as like a child as a child actor like into, I'm just excited for Dev and for him to do whatever he wants to do next.
Starting point is 00:37:24 But I think it's fun to talk about that in the realm of John Wick because my other South by Smuggle is the Fall Guy. Yeah. Written by Drew Pierce, who wrote Iron Man 3. And directed by David Lach who directed John Wick. He also did Bullet Train, which I thought was in terms of, like, if you want to talk about, like, fun action, but shaggy on the story front, that's where I would put Bullet Train. Fall Guy, tight to me. This, to me. I can't wait to see it.
Starting point is 00:37:56 It was a perfect movie viewing experience. I had the best fucking time. And I was not at all sold necessarily on the trailer. And it's not because Emily Blood and Ryan Gosling rolled up to the premiere of this on the back of like a monster truck after all these like people on motorcycles had done stunts in the streets and stuff like that. It wasn't the pageantry of the pomp and stricken stance or anything like that. It's just like a good old fashioned great. action, comedy, love story, all this sort of stuff wrapped up into one.
Starting point is 00:38:32 Gossling's great, but is great. Aaron Taylor, Johnson, Craven himself is hilarious. There's like a long section where he is clearly making fun of Matthew McConaughey, and it was very funny. Winston Duke has a lot to do, which is really fun because I feel like Winston Duke, after the promise of Mbaku hasn't gotten to do, like, everything I wanted him to do after that and this is a really fun thing for him to do. Hannah Wanningham is here.
Starting point is 00:38:59 Oscar nominee Stephanie Shue is here. It's a great cast. It's, again, like a love letter to not only stunts because all these stunts like David Lach who started as a stunt guy, all the stunts are practically done and there's like a whole long role over the closing credits of like them showing you
Starting point is 00:39:15 them doing all of the stunts and it's like it's really cool. But it's also just like a larger love letter to making movies. and like movie history and all that kind of stuff. And it's just like, it's fun, it's funny. It really surprised me with how good it was. I just had the best time.
Starting point is 00:39:33 And I hope that wasn't like South by I-I-I-DIS, which can happen where you're just like hyped up in the room. I really think this is a good one. I really, really do. So I can't wait to see it. I'm excited. Yeah. Good smuggle.
Starting point is 00:39:47 May 3rd. I feel like it kind of counts. Action Adventure, ish. Why not? Okay. Great. Why not? It's the hype meter.
Starting point is 00:39:57 We change the calendar to our own rules. We change genre to fit our rules. What? That's all my smuggles are done. Mallory Rubin, back to you. Is it Furiosa time? This is Furiosa is, in fact, my number six, and it's your number seven. So let's talk about it.
Starting point is 00:40:13 Yeah. Take it away. I can't believe I have this higher than you. I'm astonished. Well, we heard from someone whose friends saw, like, an early screening, and their review was not positive. and that made me worry, though I'm more optimistic than some of our
Starting point is 00:40:27 ringer-verse colleagues have been about it. I don't know. I'm... The reason I decided to have faith in this movie, despite the fact that the trailer is just not hitting with people for some reason,
Starting point is 00:40:39 the various trailers are not hitting with people, is because that's how people felt about Mad Max Fury Road, and then Mad Max Fury Road just blew everyone's asses off their bodies, you know? So, like, I just... You know, I think... I think it's, we don't have enough evidence.
Starting point is 00:40:57 Sounds painful. To doubt George Miller when he gave us Fury Road, you know? This is exactly how I feel. Yeah. So, and I really love Hemsworth's, like, Ozzy Hick accent that he's doing in this. It's like extra backwoodsy. And Ani Taylor Joy, fantastic. Knows her way around a dune.
Starting point is 00:41:20 So I'm just. Love the sand dune. I'm confused by people are so sure this is going to be bad but I don't know what do you think now? I agree I think that the combination of the reception to the trailer
Starting point is 00:41:34 and maybe the not totally unfounded and perhaps even healthy when we get into offshoots of offshoots and spinoffs to spinoffs we have some aspect of our brains that pings to like are we going to dilute the quality of the thing itself but I trust that George Miller is making this movie
Starting point is 00:41:58 because he thinks he has a good movie to make. And that is at least my hope. This is coming out May 24th. So this is soon-ish, pretty close. I am not like fully in the all I need to know is like, I love your description of Chris Hemp's worth accent, is that I'll get to spend, you know, a couple hours with Dementis to be totally sold,
Starting point is 00:42:24 but it's helpful. It's definitely helpful. I'm excited. I'm excited by the nose. I'm excited by all of it. Who doesn't love to spend a couple, a couple hours with Anya Taylor Joy? I will say that I think following Charlize is like one of the hardest tasks that any human
Starting point is 00:42:42 could ever face. I do feel that way about it, but I think also that Anya Taylor Joy is capable of achieving that. And I had a experience out in the wild recently where on three of my last four flights, I ended up sitting next to somebody watching Fury Road. Three of the last four flights. What a wild plane movie. I know.
Starting point is 00:43:07 It was kind of shocking the first time. Do you want to see this movie on the smallest screen possible with the shittiest sound? That's okay. I support. See it wherever you want. However, watch on your phone. I don't care. But it's just being near it.
Starting point is 00:43:20 it being like mere inches from it. It made me even mere inches, even more excited than I already was also on the casting front. Just got a shout out Tom Burke. I just love whatever. Don Burke isn't anything. So that's exciting too. I hope the movie's good.
Starting point is 00:43:38 Me too. Me too. What is your number six? You probably have this higher. It's DeBois. I do. I do have it higher. All right. Now I'm starting to wonder what you have. You've got something coming like in the top that I'm not expecting. Oh, boy. Okay. I do. But once I tell you, you're going to be like, oh, yeah. I forgot. Oh, I know what it is. I know what it is. I wrote it in my honorable mentions and I was like, this is not a thing I've seen, but I have no doubt this isn't Joanna's Top 5. I know what it is. Okay. Great. I know what it is. Oh, boy. Starting point is 00:46:39 Okay. This is where we get into the point in the height meter. It's like we just say titles to each other and don't talk about anything for 10 minutes. Jogging for position. Yeah. Okay. So we're coming back to the boys. We're coming back to Dr.
Starting point is 00:46:53 Who. And we are now on. And we're coming back to Deadpool. Yeah. And we are now on your number four. Which is Dr. Who. So.
Starting point is 00:47:02 And my number four is the boys. So let's talk about Doctor Who and the boys. Okay. Perfect. Look how quickly we solved that. Resolved. Okay. Which would you like to chat about first?
Starting point is 00:47:11 Let's just knock the Who out of here. We're so excited. We're excited for Doctor Who. Space Babies. Space. What's up? Space Babies. That's the season premiere is titled Space Baby's amazing.
Starting point is 00:47:27 Episode three of the new season. So the premiere is May 11th. Episode 3, written by Stephen Moffitt. And if you followed us along with our rewatch or first watch, if you were Mallory last year, you know that, like, for many people, the platonic ideal of Doctor Who is Stephen Moffat writing, Russell T. Davies show running. And that is what we were getting in episode three, title, boom. What a time to be us. I mean, thank you.
Starting point is 00:47:58 There is an episode. Episode two is called The Devil's Core. And this is the one I believe that Jinks Monsoon, the Great, the Incredible Drag Queen, is in. And I think it's like going to be a music-based episode, obviously. So I'm very excited for that. Kate Heron of Loki Season 1 fame has written episode 6, titled Rogue, which I don't think is anything to do with the X-Men. But who's to say? But yeah, Kate Heron, I mean, Stephen Moffitt, Kate Heron, like, I'm very excited.
Starting point is 00:48:29 So we're going to be back with Judy Gatwa and we are really, really excited for that. So we're not going to be, it's not necessarily going to be like a week-to-week coverage for us, but we will be obviously dipping into this when it premieres at some point. So I'm excited. Yes, yes, yes, yes. Me too. I can't wait. The trailer, the new trailer that came out just this past weekend was super fun when we heard the doctor say, have you ever felt so a lot? I got like a little old chill
Starting point is 00:49:02 because it was, you know, as I had said many times on our Who rewatch slash first watch pods, I had watched the first Jodi season live, but I had no prior who context for that. So this will be my first time. Obviously, we just had a little taste of this with the 360th anniversary specials
Starting point is 00:49:23 and then the Christmas special of sharing something new together. But this is the first time we're heading into a full season that we get to share together. I know. With a new doctor coming off of you introducing me to the entire wide world of New Who. And I just can't wait to watch it together and talk about it together and get to share it with everybody.
Starting point is 00:49:49 And just the glimpses of all of the different sweaters and suits that she was rocking in the trailer. I know. It couldn't be more of a thrill. So I'm, I'm hyped. I'm hyped. I can't wait. Can't wait to share this together. You want to talk about the boys?
Starting point is 00:50:07 Let's do it. So I have the boys at number four. You had the boys at six. This is season four of the boys, which is hitting Amazon Prime on June 13th, which puts it squarely inside of the return of content McGettin. We had content McGettin.
Starting point is 00:50:27 A couple years ago. This is hot nerd summer. Hot Nerd Autumn was a couple years ago. It's Hot Nerd Summer now, yeah. Everything is airing at once for reasons that genuinely allude me, but here we are. And this is, once again, as is always the case for a boy season, it's an eight-episode season, but a three-episode initial drop. So it's airing over six weeks.
Starting point is 00:50:48 It's like a tidy little burst of story. Thought the first trailer for season for the teaser trailer was a, like this interesting combo of on the one hand, an incredibly entertaining trailer for the boys. And on the other hand, that instant trigger of, it's going to be an experience to watch the boys in an election year. And like, are we collectively ready for that? My emotionally prepared.
Starting point is 00:51:18 I don't know. I don't know. I think the boys is, it's one of the most consistent and consistently quality programs in, our verse. So I always love when we have a new boys season to cover. I am very excited for this one.
Starting point is 00:51:36 Jeffrey Dean Morgan joining the cast. Wonderful. Can't wait. What are your thoughts on the boys? I agree with you. The boys is just always a fun, fine time at the comic book
Starting point is 00:51:49 TV arena. I had a great time with the last season. The boys never tends to be something that I like think about. out for a long time after, but have a great time as it's airing, which is why it's not higher on my list. But, like, I always enjoy watching it and have a great time as it's going.
Starting point is 00:52:10 I think the fact that it's week to week excites me after that first three job. And I'm just sorry that it's debuting in the middle of a lot of other things that are higher on our list. So, you know. It's going to be a while time. We should also say that this is the first season of the boys that will be airing after the first season of Gen V. So this expansion of the boys' universe, I'm curious to see how present the storylines from season one of Gen V, a season of television that I really, really enjoyed it. If anybody's just catching up on that.
Starting point is 00:52:51 Mint Edition covered it. You can go back and catch up on those episodes. We should also say while we're talking about Gen V, just like absolutely horrific news from the weekend with Chance Sprodomo's death. He played Andre in season one of Gen Vian was just absolutely sensational. That was just very upsetting and horrible. Yeah, I still haven't had a chance to catch up with Gen V, but I did really enjoy his performance on Sabrina. He was wonderful, wonderful on that show. And I was just like really excited to see what he might do in the future.
Starting point is 00:53:23 But I'm really excited. I mean, I'm more excited than I already was to catch up with GenV because I know I have that performance waiting for me. So, yeah. Yeah. Fantastic performance. Fantastic season of TV. Hopefully a fantastic season of the boys awaits this June. What is your next entry on your height meter, Joe?
Starting point is 00:53:47 Number three. Number three. Okay. This is the one that I have that you don't have that, but you probably. think you know what it is. I do know what it is. I'll be shocked if I don't know what it is. Do you want to say what it is? Sure. I'll be proud to be right. And it'll make me feel like I really know you. Yeah. Yeah. And then it'll be super embarrassing if I'm wrong. It is. Joanna at number three on her height meter is selecting, premiering May 12th on AMC, season two of Interview with the Vampire. Yes.
Starting point is 00:54:18 Interview with the Vampire. Oh my God. I love that you know me. Feels great. I'm so excited for the return of this show. I could not say enough good things about season one of this show, and I still feel like the show has not gotten the love and attention it deserves. It does have a second season, so for that I am grateful because I know AMC spent a lot of, paid the Anne Rice family a lot, the Rice family a lot of money for this property. So I suppose they weren't going to like just call it a day after season. one, but I really hope more people tune in to season two and catch up with season one because
Starting point is 00:55:00 it's just an extraordinary show. If you like vampires, if you like New Orleans, if you like sex, if you like, you know, horror. You have my attention. I mean, it's not as, I mean, it's just a wonderful toxic romance with vampires. in New Orleans. What? I mean, what more could you ask for, honestly? This is such a great. We talked a lot about adaptation when we talked about Three Body Problem. I've been talking a lot about it over prestige with the Shogun adaptation that's currently airing. This is such a
Starting point is 00:55:39 brilliant adaptation of a story that is very well known, where they changed the time period and they changed, you know, the character of Louis enough to make it just like additive and interesting. And I'm so excited to see what they do with season two. Interview Vampire. It's just, please just trust me. If you've ever trusted me on anything, please trust me when I tell you, this show is amazing. Okay, that's it. Interview. I feel sad I haven't watched it yet because I know how much you love it and how much it means to you. So I will. You're an exception because it is horror. I mean, I guess I can't wait because I waited. But no, I love vampire stories. Yeah. I do. Those almost feel like distinct in some ways, sometimes from the horror bucket,
Starting point is 00:56:21 is it's a type of horror. It's a subset of horror that I'm able to handle. I look forward to watching this show. Maybe in all our free time when we're not just like. I don't currently have AMC. But I'll solve that. We're not like desiccating our eyeballs watching all the other stuff we're going to watch this summer.
Starting point is 00:56:37 Like maybe you and I could do a little interview with AMP. That would be. That would be sensational. Yeah. Okay. Bang it out in a day. It's a date. It's a date.
Starting point is 00:56:46 I was going to be like one episode a week. But you're like, do you know how I operate? And I forgot. I forgot. That's true. One episode a week also sounds lovely and like a normal way to watch a thing. Right? Like a nice little tradition.
Starting point is 00:56:58 Let's give it a go. A little bite of the neck. A little, a little nibble. A little suck of the artery. All right. Is this where you have Deadpool or do you have Deadpool? It is.
Starting point is 00:57:10 Okay. Yes. I think you know what might talk to. Yeah. The question is, do we have them in the same order. I think we do. I think we do. Okay.
Starting point is 00:57:17 Okay. Yes. Deadpool and Wolverine is my number three. and I think this is just where we would like to just take a moment to say something really serious, which is that pegging isn't new for us, Frendo, but it is for Disney.
Starting point is 00:57:30 That line in the trailer. I just have rarely known such a moment of relief. Like, does it absolutely guarantee that the pure Deadpool experience will port over to the MCU? No, but it was a sign to us that they're trying,
Starting point is 00:57:49 and that meant a lot. This movie comes out July 26th. It is the only Marvel movie of the year. Wild Times. So Joanna, you're the New York Times bestselling author of MCU, The Rain of Marvel Studios. Can the Merck with the mouth save the MCU? I just don't think we should place that on any, like, With a little help from Wolverine. Can the Marvel save the MCU? There was a video. Our pals at Screen Crush.
Starting point is 00:58:26 I didn't watch the video. I know that it was a troll headline, but it was like Madame Webb saved the MCO. I was like, I don't know what this means. I refuse to click on it. I love you, Ryan, and the rest of you over there. So can Blank save the MCU?
Starting point is 00:58:39 I just feel like we should just turn the heat down on all these things and just be like... The heat is up, though. I agree with you, as you know. But like, it feels like, Edpool is carrying so much. It does, but like, why make it? Why add to it?
Starting point is 00:58:54 Shriveling shoulders? No, they're not shriveled. They're strong. They're just scarred. Yes, the skin is. Yes, the skin on top is. It's crispy. Okay, listen.
Starting point is 00:59:06 I think it's going to be really fun, a really fun, fine time with the movies. And it's going to be playing a lot in the X-Men world, which we're really excited about. There are like a bunch of cameos allegedly around this movie that could be fun in the same way that, you know, Spider-Man was, et cetera. I think that the TVA's presence here is very exciting for you and me, given that we are big Loki fans and big Matthew McFadden fans. So yeah. Seeing Matthew McFadden in a TVA. Tedful trailer in the TVA saying, Mr. Wilson, you appear to have soiled yourself while unconscious.
Starting point is 00:59:52 And then Wade saying, I wasn't unconscious. I knew joy in that moment. I did. I was already really hyped for this movie, and then the Super Bowl trailer fueled that already present hype. I love the Deadpool franchise. I'm excited to get an R-rated movie into the MCU. We love variants inside of the MCU,
Starting point is 01:00:16 and it can come in many forums and that's one of them. We're known as the genre variance authority, right? Like, you know, the GVA. GBA. The rating variance authority, the RBA. Oh, man. Yeah. I'm really, like, interested to see what the,
Starting point is 01:00:32 this is where I say brew and you make fun of me, what the brew is, what the blend is, of, like, how much Deadpool energy comes into the MCU and how much MCU energy comes into the Deadpool franchise and, like, what is that? sweet spot and hopefully like perfect harmony and alchemy. Hearing Wade say your little cinematic universe is about to change forever and I am Marveled Jesus in the trailer just killed me like they're leaning in.
Starting point is 01:00:59 Yeah. I think that's great. Obviously Wolverine is here. We're in this larger X-Men moment, very exciting. Getting that glimpse of the like Secret Wars comic that was sitting a footer to a wave from Wade toward the end of the trailer. It just feels like a lot is here
Starting point is 01:01:20 and a lot of story and character that has real heft and consequence for what is still to come in the multiverse saga. And... Oh, multiverse saga. That's a phrase I haven't heard in a long time.
Starting point is 01:01:41 We're out of practice. Oh, boy. Yeah. I mean, I mean, I think it's a great, if you're only going to do one movie this year, I think this is such a great pick. Because on the one hand, it could connect back to all sorts of things and open a lot of opportunities for them for how they want to handle the multiverse going forward. But on the other hand, it is like a known established beloved property, you know, and
Starting point is 01:02:05 like in Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, two leading men who are just like absolutely game to sell the shit out of this with their like excess charisma. so yeah, let's do it. It's going to be, I think it's going to be great. I think it's going to make it ton of. During our summer together. Oh, our summer of our, it's going to be really fun. I think it's going to make a ton of money.
Starting point is 01:02:29 I think people are going to really love it. But I don't know that it guarantees that Marvel knows exactly what it's going to do cinematically next. And you know what? That's okay. Like you said, and I am with you. The movie should not be responsible for solving the entire future of the MCU. It would be great to have an MCU movie that would be.
Starting point is 01:02:45 we all really enjoyed watching. What a way that would be to spend the summer? Number two. Speaking of how we're spending this summer, Joanna Robinson, it takes us to our top two. We definitely have the same two things. Do we have them in the same? Yeah, we do. Don't we.
Starting point is 01:02:56 Number two is out loud. Yeah, number two, three, two, one. One, the acolyte. Yeah. June 4th, 2024, the acolyte. I flirted with flipping the top two. I thought you might. But let's be real about our number one, which we'll talk about after.
Starting point is 01:03:19 Like, I was like, there's, I mean, okay, but we know how excited I am for the accolite. I am so excited for the acolyte. I have already, like, blathered at length about how excited I am. We did a whole breakdown of the trailer. I really recommend you check that out because we had a great time doing it. One thing we didn't mention about that trailer. I mean, I'm sure there's plenty of things we didn't mention about that trailer. I think it could have been all day talking about that trailer.
Starting point is 01:03:50 But one thing that people are like, I can't believe I didn't mention this, is that Rebecca Henderson's character, Vernestra Roe, we think, has like a whip, a laser whip. And that's just something we didn't talk about because all you see you do in the trailer is open a door. but like she's going to do more than that. We did talk about the door opening at length though. We talked about the door, but like she's got a really cool weapon and I am excited to see that. But yeah, this is just, I mean, I'm stuck. Like, it doesn't matter.
Starting point is 01:04:29 It was funny because someone I, a good friend of mine who listens to both the Midnight Boys in our podcast was like, the Midnight Boys talked at length about like the negative reaction to the trailer. Why didn't you guys talk about this? And I was like, I just don't see the point. Like, I don't really care if some people have decided that the acolyte isn't going to be good. I am, it is doing nothing to, like, dampen my excitement for it. And some of that feeling has to do with, you know, the hit or miss quality of some of the Star Wars Disney Plus shows. And some of it has to do with, like, far worse reasons. And I just, I'm just sort of like, yeah.
Starting point is 01:05:08 I'm not really interested in that. I'm interested in all the reasons why I feel like this is going to be good. Leslie Headland running this who is just like a wonderful storyteller and I'm so excited she gets to play here and like has incredible Star Wars bona fides as a long time fan. Not that you'd have to. Tony Gilroy is like, I don't. But, you know, like she does. And you know, Manila Sundberg, Lesh, Leshneux, Leisure, Jay, Daphne Keene, Charlie Burnett.
Starting point is 01:05:37 Like, I'm so excited about the cast. Mani Jacinto? Manning the dude being a pro. Just the guy being a lad. I'm so excited for this. There is a slight bummer that this is running at the same time as our number one pick. But at the same time, I'm just choosing to see it as sort of like, yeah. We've been here before.
Starting point is 01:05:57 The two-for challenge that we really, I think, knocked out of the park last time. So I think it's just going to be us just going on full cylinders. And I'm really excited for it. So, the accolade. Anything you want to add? Joe, tell me what comes into your mind. Life, balance. I see fire.
Starting point is 01:06:18 I see a fire trailer. This trailer was awesome. We loved it. I can't wait to watch this show. Like you said, sometimes Star Wars shows, Star Wars movies aren't great. Sometimes they're amazing.
Starting point is 01:06:33 We don't know until we see them, but that not only does it not. It cannot dampen and diminutive. the anticipation that's part of the experience and I think in this particular case everything you outlined about the creative team the cast how excited we are for that
Starting point is 01:06:49 filming on location all that stuff the we discussed this in our trailer breakdown and as Joe said please check that out if you haven't yet the feeling inside of us
Starting point is 01:07:05 as we near a moment where the High Republic era comes to the screen lots of high republic Republic novels and comics at this point. The High Republic literary releases are a few years deep at this point. But this is going to be the first time that we are in this stretch of the timeline, in this stretch of New Canon on the screen. And that's awesome. That's exhilarating. We're a hundred years before Phantom Menace. Now, does that mean we are completely untethered from the story of the Skywalker saga and the prequels? No. We, it's about, like, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we,
Starting point is 01:07:42 quoted this, I believe on the trailer pod, this is from the Vanity Fair piece, and Leslie Hillen said in that piece, my question when watching The Phantom Menace was always like, well, how did things get to this point? We shared this quote on that pod. That's an interesting question. I think there's a lot of room to tell something that feels like really rooted in its own moment in time and own character sets and also helps us better lay the track for something that is like a central defining aspect of our shared experience of Star Wars fans. That sweet spot and that potential
Starting point is 01:08:15 balancing act is actually really interesting to me. We talked a lot like dating back to actually the Star Wars celebration, which we did not get to see the trailer because we were not there, but the reports of what was in the trailer and just the general description. We've been talking a lot for a while now about this Kill Bill meets Frozen, quote-unquote, kill-bill meets frozen concept.
Starting point is 01:08:38 And getting to glimpse that in just a couple minutes in trailer form, seeing the deployment of the martial arts, like, that intimate combat, we talked a lot about the duos and the pairings and the one-on-one confrontations inside of the trailer and how oriented it was around that. But then you build toward, like, the thrill at the end of all of the different lightsabers igniting and we get to see multiple yellow sabers on screen. We see a mysterious hand, dun dun, dun, gripping a red blade. There's just a lot here. to look forward to and how much time it's always fun to have a new star war story how much time approximately have you spent i have been studying closely at photos of manny jacinto and just going enhance enhance enhance
Starting point is 01:09:25 enhanced to look at his hand uh probably as much time as you've been spending studying his his chiseled jaw oh hairlink okay sure also that carry and moss we haven't said carry and moss yet we should just say that okay Jedi master and Dara. I just want to temper. I was talking to, I think it was fun to see about he was like really excited
Starting point is 01:09:48 about Carrie and Moss and I was like, I just want to just flag for everyone. She's in the trailer a lot. She's at the bottom of the cast list. So I just like, I just want to flag that this might be just expect maybe less
Starting point is 01:09:58 Carrie and Moss than you're currently hoping you might see. But what we're going to see is going to be really exciting. That's what I can already tell from the trailer. So yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:07 Can't wait. Back a like. Two episodes on June 4th for the premiere. So, Okay. Let's talk about our shared number one. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:14 Let's be. I wonder. This is the stuff, Lionel. This is the stuff, Lionel. God's Be Good. It's House of the Dragon, season two, June 16th. June 16th. Ballet and I, the reason this is number one over the accolade is because it is like the thing that we shared the most.
Starting point is 01:10:42 I mean, you know what I mean? It's more personal than it is like just. just the item itself. I mean, it's also known quantity over the accolite. I have not seen the acolyte yet, et cetera. But in another world, I might put the acolyte first, but in a world where I podcast with you and we have spent all this time talking about Thrones and we care a lot about dragons and we love to make fun of Chris Ryan for his dragon place blindness. Like, it has to be House of the Dragon Season 2, number one. We, again, we've talked about it at length, breaking out two different trailers on a previous House of our episode. So you can listen to that if you want all of
Starting point is 01:11:21 our detailed thoughts and feelings and questions and comments and concerns. Full breakdown in the green trailer, full breakdown of the black trailer. And then book spoilers. Spoiler chats about both of them. You have four trailer breakdowns waiting for you inside of one pod, carefully marked and separated for your respective spoiler tolerance. Go check out that pod if you haven't. One of our listeners, the most like sort of sharp House the Dragon watchers that I know sent me a theory about why Bela is where she is in the trailer and I just, I haven't shared it with you yet, but it sort of just blew my mind.
Starting point is 01:11:58 And I'm so excited. I'm excited for the things that we know are coming and that we know happen in the books. And then I'm excited for the ways in which they're going to do as they did a season one, which is like twist and turn the story a bit. So we can sort of get to puzzle over how the pieces fit together in a way that makes sense both on the page and on the screen. I'm really excited for that. I just, yeah, Thrones, baby.
Starting point is 01:12:22 Thorns. And then, like, soon there's going to be, like, just thrones all the time, which is just going to be a really interesting time in this world for us. You and I. I hope so. I hope so. You know, we had to wait a couple years for season two here. So if we're alternating.
Starting point is 01:12:39 Nine of the Seven Kingdoms is, like. I assume before alone we'll alternate and that'll be next year. then not D. Season 3 will be in two years. Wonderful. What a wonderful summer or spring or whatever. It ends up being rhythm. That'll be for us. I can't wait.
Starting point is 01:12:52 I can't wait. This was the... I always love when I could put something in number one and then work backwards. This was a very easy place to start. There was no question what was going to be number one on this hype meter. For all the reasons you said. I love you calling out like the surprises and twists and turns that await because that really was one of the
Starting point is 01:13:14 exciting aspects of covering season one for us is like not only oh this is different than in the books they change something it's like the inherent nature of fire and blood is this on it's a fictional history in the universe and it stitched together various unreliable narrator accounts of events and so then we get the true version in house of the dragon and what fun that is I love going back to Estrus with you. There is no better feeling in the world for me.
Starting point is 01:13:50 I just can't wait to do it again. I really, really, really can't. And season two, seeing the trailer so far, we'd previously gotten the teaser trailer,
Starting point is 01:13:59 then we got the green trailer and the black trailer just a couple weeks ago. What we've seen in the trailers, what stretch of fire and blood we think this is covering? Like, there's a lot, some of our favorite aspects
Starting point is 01:14:10 of this stretch of the history are coming in this season. Obviously, we're not not going to get into what all of those are here because some of them we can't talk about. But there was a lot that you could see in the trailer. That was just an absolute thrill for us. We could see Jace up north. We could see Craig and Stark.
Starting point is 01:14:26 We could see our favorite maniacs. Aymid, one eye and Agon the elder scheming and plotting schemes and plots are the same thing. We are so back. Are you? How excited are you that there's just like another shitty. a little blonde kid on the Iron Throne again. Just a real waste of space piece of shit back on the throne. To war then.
Starting point is 01:14:54 To all then. Absolutely iconic moment in the trailer. We got to see all of whining. The birthday. Burn. Your house will burn. Renira. The house doing, strategizing, seeking her birthright, Joe, we're going to be in a war
Starting point is 01:15:08 of succession. We love a war of succession. We love dragons. We got to glimpse sunfire in. the new trailers. It was just wonderful. Golden, glorious. To be back in an eight-week stretch of looking forward to seeing Damon Targaryen leaning against a wall or wearing a murder cloak. What more could we want? To be back in a moment of the time, Joe, a shared experience where we had to talk about Eric and Eric try to figure out the difference. The widening of the world. We talked about
Starting point is 01:15:43 this a lot in the trailer breakdown. We've got brackens and Blackwoods in the trailer. Freddie fucking Fox is here. Our guy spider is here is going in High Tower. What hat? What hat might Kristen Cole wear this time? What hat might Kristen
Starting point is 01:15:57 wear? What stupid little hat might Kristen enrage you by wearing this season? Will we see Laris jerk off again to Allison High Tower's feet? It seems like a lock and we love a lock here at the house. of our, can't fucking wait.
Starting point is 01:16:17 Honorable mentions? Yeah. Yeah. I had one at the top of the list here that was actually genuinely hard for me to leave out on the top 10. Inside Out too. Yeah, yeah. I felt really sad that this didn't make my top 10 because I love, love the first Inside Out movie.
Starting point is 01:16:33 It's one of my five favorite Pixar movies. And this comes out June 14th. First glimpse looked amazing. Riley's a teenager now, so we have like new emotions entering the mix. Maya Hawk is playing anxiety. This feels like a home run. I hope it's wonderful. Hope it feels like a worthy successor to the first Inside Out film, which is an absolute
Starting point is 01:16:55 classic. And so this was painful for me to keep out in the top ten. But here it is, as an honorable mention. What else is on your honorable mentions list? Kingdom of the Plain of the Apes. Yes, I've got that as well. And Twisters, which may or not count. Is that unusual?
Starting point is 01:17:12 Okay. If that's eligible, that's a great one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Actually, adventure. Question. Storms that seem to have, like, a mind of their own sort of thing. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:17:22 Love it. Love it? Yeah. Umbrella Academy? Season 4, final season? Yeah. Umbrella Academy is a real, again, like a real hit or miss show for me. But I always, like, am glad that I watched it.
Starting point is 01:17:34 And I'm excited for this, like, final. And it's just, like, such a winning cast. And there's usually at least, like, one musical number that delights me. And, you know, it's just like a, you know, a fun, fine time at the binge factory. That's a show that should be a binge drop, I think. Borderlands. This is the other video game thing that we were referencing. This is the Eli Roth adaptation, film adaptation with just like a bananas cast, including...
Starting point is 01:18:03 Unbelievable. Kate fucking Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis. Yeah. Jack Blatt, Kevin. Heart, you know, well, et cetera, et cetera. Exane. So, one of my dearest friends in the world is in this movie. Ooh.
Starting point is 01:18:19 Harry Ford. Okay. Do I know Harry Ford? Our colleague, Connor Nevins, his partner. Oh. And the most beautiful person in the world. It's just an absolute angel and a gem of a human being. And so I really hope that this movie is great.
Starting point is 01:18:38 I also hope that. great for Harry. I'm wildly confused about this movie, but also cautiously excited. Wild first trailer. Wild first trailer. Unclear. Man, hopefully Borderlands is a fun film.
Starting point is 01:18:58 I look forward to finding out. Knuckles. Paramount Plus, April 26th, six episodes. The Button Mash crew will be on it, of course. So, mentioned that that is coming as well. Joe, do you have Star Trek Discovery on your Honorable mentions? This is in April. I'm really behind. I'm really behind on disco. So I cannot in good conscience. Same. And that I have never started it. But one day, one day. I believe you.
Starting point is 01:19:29 Eric. This is coming May 30th on Netflix and in the description. How can you tell? If it's Eric or Arc. Oh, boy. Oh, boy. Boy. It really is thrown season again. Man. Eric, with an E, involves, as I understand it, Benedict Cumberbatch any puppet. Sure.
Starting point is 01:19:58 So that feels like if a puppeteer... Sure. Eligible? Yeah. Why not? Why not? Okay. We did it.
Starting point is 01:20:08 Those are the honorable mentions. Did you have anything else? Just one more plea for people. To catch up with interview with the vampire. Yes. Let me just say this. Do you remember years and years and years ago when True Blood used to come on on the summers on HBO? And you were just like, I am watching the nastiest, stickiest, like, sexiest, goziest vampire, guilty pleasure show in the summer on HBO.
Starting point is 01:20:35 It was a great time. Just come back to the folds for interview with vampire this late spring into summer. It's going to be great. I'm sold. I'm sold. We did it. We did it. We did it for many things.
Starting point is 01:20:48 We are. When will we be recording the alternate version of the pod where you have problem in part two, the scar giver at number one? Like you promised us. Can you tell me one thing about Rebel Moon 2, the scargiver? I can actually tell you a lot of things about it given that I watched part one. Who is giving the scar? Who is giving the scar?
Starting point is 01:21:13 and who's receiving it. I just, I want you, I want you to, I want you to go in here. Is part three Scargetter? I don't know. I don't know what awaits us in, in the future. Part four Scar's Guard? Carding against Scargetting? Alexander Scarce is in these movies.
Starting point is 01:21:34 Oh no. That's a, that's a true fact. It is. All right, we did it. We metered the hype. We have a lot to look forward to in spring. And in summer, we can't wait to talk about many of these properties together. That's it. That's a wrap. We did it.
Starting point is 01:21:55 I'm like, is the podcast really over? Because it wasn't three hours. I don't know what to do. But we did it. It's over. It's done. We hikes. Thank you. To Steve Allman for producing this episode, our Juno Ram Gopal, for his additional production work on this episode, and Jomi Adan for his work on the social for this episode. Starting point is 01:22:29 soldier 10-year anniversary pod, our 10 favorite winter soldier moments. Until then, remember, we mean to fight this content war and win it.
