Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello, I'm Elizabeth Day and Season 20, yes, you heard that right, Season 20 of my podcast How to Fail is coming out on January the 24th. I always love curating the best possible lineup of guests for you and this season is no different. You'll hear from a diverse range of voices including actors, directors, musicians, politicians, broadcasters, authors, and many more, all of whom will, as ever, be sharing what they've learned through failure. For those of you that might be new here, welcome. How to Fail celebrates the things in life that haven't gone right, and what, if anything, we've learned from those mistakes that might help us succeed better. Every week, my guests share three failures
Starting point is 00:00:45 sparking intimate, thought-provoking and funny conversations. You can go back and listen to previous guests I've had on from Phoebe Waller-Bridge. I felt like I hit the edges of something during Killing Eve. And also because I was filming Star Wars at the same time and you feel so lucky, so you do push yourself.
Starting point is 00:01:03 I also probably should have said, I need to take a week because I can't think straight because I'm so tired. But unless you really demand that, no one's really going to say that for you because everyone's just like, it'll be fine, get on with it. To Bernie Sanders.
Starting point is 00:01:18 You get upset when you hear your parents arguing all the time. And they did. My father came to the United States with no money at all. My mother was born in the United States. She had dreams, expectations, I think, that were greater than my father's. He was very content to make the living that he made. We lived in a rent, what was called a rent-controlled apartment
Starting point is 00:01:37 for lower-income families. And my mother wanted more, and there was a constant friction in the house. And I think that impacts a young child. And Stephen Bartlett. That was compounded with the fact that I was the only black kid in my school, other than my brothers and sisters. And I was the youngest of those.
Starting point is 00:01:52 So they all left eventually. My hair's curly. Everyone else's hair's straight. We're super poor. I can never bring someone home to like meet my family. Or none of my friends ever came in my house in the whole 18 years that I was there. Never had a girlfriend come back. I was always lying.
Starting point is 00:02:06 And I was lying because, you know, in that age on the playground, all you want to do is fit in. For those of you that have been with me for the journey so far, thank you. And you might've noticed the podcast is back with a new look, new studio and our very own YouTube channel.
