Starting point is 00:00:00 hey everyone my name is matt mccorry and i played the character asher millstone on how to get away with murder and i'm jack fallahy and i played connor walsh on that very same tv show and this is the how we got away with murder podcast and action hey buddy hello hello happy new year happy new year to you we should we should say we should have our producers say in action before we start every that's every episode i think that'll make us feel more at home yeah it'll help yeah arts are medium this is our first episode being recorded in 2026 but dear dear listener you are listening in the future that's true yeah like uh like yeah like in the future yeah i had a joke pre-loaded but you know sometimes it's just like it doesn't work as well and as
Starting point is 00:00:58 i was going to say it i i got cold feet yeah you got cold feet you don't want to do your scripted joke but i respect no yeah it was gonna be a sarah connor joke which is got it you know it's you know you get it anyway but we are recording in early january so it's our first time seeing each other did you have a good end of your year start of your year yeah yeah it was pretty good yeah yeah kind of old time in nature looked at some bodies of water that's nice by some bodies of water which is nice yeah yeah i'm well i'm in new york so i was you know by the east river which has bodies in bodies that's true that's true you know there's but there's this there's swimming with the fishes down there that's right bodies on bodies on bodies so we both right
Starting point is 00:01:39 Yaddy, yaddy, yaddy. We both... Yaddy, yaddy, yaddy. Anyway, we had... The last episode was with Pete Nowak. Yeah. Our dear friend. Our creator.
Starting point is 00:01:49 And our creator. Yeah. Our Lord and Savior. He made us. He formed us. Thank you, Lord Creator. Thank you. And it was such a great conversation.
Starting point is 00:01:59 I'm really... I think we're both very grateful that he came on and was so candid and open. And that he birthed us and created us. Yeah, it was really, yeah, it was great. I'm very grateful for my creator. Yeah, no, and I hope that the fans got some some juicy insights into, into the creation process, you know? Yeah, I was saying to a buddy, who is just a fan of How to Get With Murder, and so he keeps asking questions about the podcast, that I think it was, from what I remember, I think that's like the most candid sort of conversation Pete has had in like a long form context. So I'm really, yeah, I think that listeners probably loved it. I hope. Yeah. Leave a comment. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:46 Leave a review. Leave a review. Subscribe. Did you like it? These are brand sponsors. Tell us if you liked it. Okay, we don't know. We don't know.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Unless you review and comment. We're assuming the worst. Yeah, unless you tell us. I am always assuming the worst. Yeah. I just this morning, I slipped back in my old habits and someone in the How Do You Murder subreddit made a comment about how unlikable
Starting point is 00:03:07 the Keating Five is in the show. Oh, wow. Wow. And I responded saying, agree to disagree. And at this point, everyone knows it's you, right? My username is it's me, Jack Falahee. So at least I'm not like, you know, hiding behind anonymity and I'm owning it. But I did engage with a... That being said, I am interested as we recap these episodes further, if I side with the audience and think that the Keating Five are unlikable, which may happen. And we start to see, I think, some unlikability in today's episode, which is episode two. Two, yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:50 It's all her fault. All of it. It's all her fault. It was written by Pete Nowak, directed by Bill D'Elia. It aired on October 2nd, 2014, but we filmed it in Los Angeles. First episode to be filmed in Los Angeles. the first day of filming i have written down as july 21st 2014 wow so we're gonna read the log line but before we do that matt yeah just to refresh people's memories we shot the pilot
Starting point is 00:04:25 in philly yeah it gets picked up months go by and how long was it before it got picked up too it was probably at least a month wasn't it no it was months months before it got picked up before it got picked up yes yeah yeah okay okay i think what you're telling it i thought that it was like yeah yeah no okay there was time no i think we finish i think we finish filming and i think that we have most of march and april and then we get picked up officially i think on may may 8th yes may 8th 2014 is when we officially get picked up but we had at least six weeks right do you remember what you did during those six weeks i i remember i went back to work i was personal training yeah i went back to the to the gym makes sense that i was at and it was already a little
Starting point is 00:05:13 strange because i was already being recognized for like oranges new black oh yeah and um but it was like it was a private gym so it's you know it was a little less strange right um than just people I had no idea who they were just randomly recognizing me. Right. But I remember being like, you know, I really want to make sure that I, you know, am doing this and getting paid to do it full time before I like leave, you know, a training career and stuff. And so, yeah. Yeah. I mean, I can, I can deeply relate because if we would have, we would have finished in Philly the end of March. Right. So we had all of April. So we had a month. Right. So I went, I did the same thing where I went back to Los Angeles and I picked up shifts driving for Lyft.
Starting point is 00:05:57 Right. The donations-based Lyft. The donations-based Lyft at the time. But I think that that does speak to both of us as like, you know, not counting our chickens before they hatched. I also went on vacation. I went to Hawaii to go backpacking with a friend of mine, like, you know, hiking through the forests of Kauai and it was beautiful. And I did something that you shouldn't do when you're waiting for really big news on a job. I tried to impress a girl boogie boarding. The fateful incident. The fateful incident. And I very badly separated my shoulder. I think it was like a grade three or grade four separation. Damn. Which they suggested I get shoulder reconstruction, but I couldn't because
Starting point is 00:06:44 weeks, weeks later, we we get this news that we get picked up and we are gainfully employed and we are going to be on a television show. So I've been teasing this silly journal entry that's really cringe. And I think it's a good time to read it before we have you do the log line and we just get the episode ready. I love that. Here we are. This is from my journal. It's May 9 2014 at 1026 AM. So this is the day after we get picked up. Oh, wow. This is my journal entry. Hi, Jack. I have Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, and Pete Nowak on the phone. Me. Okay, great. Shonda, we're going to be on TV. You have gainful employment. And then I write, maybe you think about all those shitty jobs you worked. Maybe you think about money. Maybe you think of her.
Starting point is 00:07:31 Maybe you think of parental expectations. Maybe you can't feel the searing pain in your shoulder where you separated your AC joint all because euphoria is taking over your body. Maybe you think that wasn't so hard after all. Maybe you get a beer and some dinner with a buddy and then smoke a joint, almost as if your life hasn't totally just changed. Wow.
Starting point is 00:07:50 I love that. That's cool. Baby Jack reflecting on what was about to happen. I love that. We'll be right back. And we're back. So had you moved to LA yet? No, not until we got picked up.
Starting point is 00:08:05 Right. you get the news around may 8th presumably yeah yeah yeah it was actually great timing too because i just went through a large breakup a cohabitating breakup of a relationship of like a couple years and i was still living in that apartment and so it was great that i was like gonna get to leave the entire city you know and have a new you know it's like whether it's separating your shoulder having a breakup you know as an actor there's few things um that are greater for lifting your experience than gainful employment in the words of Shonda. Gainful employment in the words of Shonda. Yeah. Are you, are you still a big journaler? I'm trying to be now, but I think that
Starting point is 00:08:45 as we'll see maybe over the course of this show, I think that you see my journaling become more and more sporadic, which we can talk about in the future. But I do think that I remember my dad pulling me aside once, once we like got into the first season and he was like, this is such a weird thing that you're doing like this is such a unique experience you should write it all down and i was like that's really good advice i should do that yeah and then i didn't do it and yeah add to that my memory being what it is we are piecing it all together okay so you move sometime after may i'm in la with a separated shoulder yeah and we are we are anxiously awaiting for july So Elfie moves from England. Carla, I think moves. Asia, I think moves. Many people move. Many people relocate to Los Angeles to start filming. And we are filming at Sunset Gower Studios in the middle of LA.
Starting point is 00:09:42 which for those who don't know it's like a it's a relatively small studio it was recently the last couple years i guess bought by netflix but there's been a lot of history like the i think the pilot of golden girls was shot there which didn't mean a whole lot to me at the time but watching it this year for the first time you know was very exciting oh yeah um yeah huge huge huge huge shows shot at sunset gower yeah how to get with murder how to get with murder most notable yeah We should add, I'm blanking, but there is, there is a plaque. I want to see if I can get a photo of it. And I have a video with myself talking about it that I never posted.
Starting point is 00:10:20 Oh, really? Of all the shows? Yeah. Oh, yeah. We should. For at least one of the ones by kind of by the gate, by the entrance. Yeah, cool. I wonder if we can get one now.
Starting point is 00:10:29 It'd be interesting to see it like updated with like Netflix shows too. I'm assuming that they shoot there. I don't know. Anyway, we're there. We're at Sunset Gowers. We're filming. we are in los angeles yep for episode two the title that's all her fault and i want you to read the logline summary i'll do it for you thank you so much i'll do it for
Starting point is 00:10:51 you logline summary annalise takes on a new client max saint vincent an eccentric millionaire who is the key suspect in his wife's brutal murder all the clues point to saint vincent as the killer but annalise challenges her students to prove he's innocent whether that's the truth or not Meanwhile, Annalise deals with issues in her own home with growing suspicions that Sam is somehow involved in Lila's disappearance start to affect their marriage. Definitely missed a word in there. In flash forwards, we go back to the night of the murder
Starting point is 00:11:20 and learn that Wes might be hiding a few secrets of his own. Little liar. That was fantastic. Thank you so much. I love that. All right. So I did guess correctly that Michaela says the line. It's all her fault.
Starting point is 00:11:36 Yeah, me too. And you also guessed correctly. I did. I did. I feel like she says things very definitively. Yes. In binaries. Yes, she does.
Starting point is 00:11:44 Yeah. So we are going to get to the titular line very quickly, but we jump right in. We jump right back in, I should say. And thank God they do a previously on Hug It With Murder recap because I already, I think, was forgetting some of the things that happened in the pilot because it moves so quickly. And so the recap is very straightforward, where it just has three major beats. It's like, these are the Keating Five that Annalise chose. Sam is Annalise Keating's husband, and the Keating Five has killed Sam. Right. And then, boom, we're in the woods. We're back on Night X. We are actually revisiting a scene that we saw on the pilot, but we are taking it further back and hearing more of the dialogue between Connor and Michaela.
Starting point is 00:12:28 this again is the connor audition scene that i did right the what's what's that line shut up sit down and stop acting a little bitch baby comes back and we see wes rock up with the trophy which i guess maybe he had to go back for that's the question right yeah two things one is i always picture an actual baby when you see that line which is really strange um like don't don't treat baby like that um but also i'm wondering did you know and i guess not to spoil it to any viewers who haven't seen it yet but did you know the significance of the trophy when you were shooting it like did you know why like what it had to do with anything no wow definitely not right because i mean i think i think as we've established i i think unless we learn it in the episode i think
Starting point is 00:13:16 it's safe to say we didn't know i think that's i think that makes sense i will phone a friend and hopefully get some input on this for a future episode but i'm pretty sure that we had no idea the significance i think we were trying to like draw conclusions and it's a little bit what we talked about with pete last week where you know we were kind of just acting based off what information we had and that at times was influencing the writers to make decisions totally you know and i think when you're watching it as an audience member and you also don't know in the moment yes it doesn't really matter but when you sometimes when you look back there's when knowing what you know there's little moments of like oh it's an interesting way to play that if you know
Starting point is 00:13:56 that this is coming which you don't and even even this scene at the beginning of this episode going further back and showing more of a scene that we've already watched in the pilot like i think the show does that very effectively where it like it sprinkles in enough information for the audience to get really curious and then it gives you a little bit more it gives you a little bit more And it'll go back and show you a little bit more that you thought was already, you know, we already wrapped up that scene, but there's actually a little bit more to that scene. And I can already feel as an audience member, like having that wet my whistle, you know, where I genuinely, I mean, I think I remember what happens a bit, but as we'll cover over the course of this episode, there's things where I'm just scratching my head. And I don't remember any of it. Right. And you're going back, basically shooting essentially the same scene with each episode for night X murder night, as we called it. And and just filling it out more. Yeah, that's wild. Yeah, that is wild. I mean, I know that that's true. But but for this scene, I don't remember if we'd already shot this scene. okay right that's true there i think there there are a hundred percent times where we are shooting new scene for the same scene right but i think for this one we had maybe shot some of this in philly
Starting point is 00:15:16 and that it is playing in episode two interesting is it also i wonder it's also like playing the exact same way if they're taking different coverage like different shots of when they were filming it too i'm sure that's probably not too difficult to figure out no we'll figure it out. I think it will be more obvious to when we're like, we're clearly adding things. But for this so far, I think that this is things that we shot in. Do you think I'm wrong? I don't know. I have no idea. Oh, no, no, no, no. This is breaking my brain. I'm like, wait, are we? Did we shoot this in LA? We're gonna I'm gonna get to the bottom of this, but I'm almost positive. Well, because the trope of this is going to be I hope this is not so boring for the audience. But was the trophy
Starting point is 00:16:00 in the first in the pilot in the episode revealed like like wes was like i brought this i don't remember did they do the coin flip no we did yeah we did corn yeah yeah yeah yeah this is just getting into how terrible our memory is this is getting into this is also annoying but it is i think it shows how confusing it was to film too yeah where you were constantly being thrown new material on things you would already shot that sometimes contradicted choices you chose to play in an episode the only reason why i think that we might have already shot this is because the scene existed in the audition like i'm i am positive that this was connor's audition scene right so it must have already been written right right right right right but we will we will go
Starting point is 00:16:49 as we recap with there are scenes on night x in the future like in the woods that we did not shoot and are added in this episode and shot in Los Angeles. Right, right, right, right. We have thoroughly confused the listener or the listeners like, no, we get it. You guys are dumb and have bad memories. All right. Anyway.
Starting point is 00:17:07 I want to find different podcasts. Yeah, they're like tuning out. Guys, I'm trying my best. All right. So they do the coin flip. We don't even see the coin flip yet. He goes for the, we see the trophy and then two and a half months earlier, right?
Starting point is 00:17:24 They're discussing Sam and AK were in AK's house, which now, just to stress, they have built Annalise's house in Los Angeles on a studio lot. And it looks identical to the house in the pilot. Yeah, truly. Sam is discussing how the psych department, they, you know, they want someone there for the grief counseling surrounding Lila Stangard's death slash murder. And it's definitely peppering in some breadcrumbs around the infidelity. annalise clearly suspects sam of some going-ons yeah yeah right the the looks that she gives sam could bore a hole through the soul and also the just the tension of them trying to read each other is just so well executed it's so palpable it's just and i'm trying to remember even like in the
Starting point is 00:18:12 initial scripts how much of like the unscripted stuff was in the direction and stuff but it does the show does a really good job of communicating a lot without a lot of what is not said you know what is seen totally yeah yeah and viola i think sets the bar very high for yeah for that so we we get that storytelling most of it through eyes like you said and then we go right to class there's a great line in class where i think the show does a very effective job of this like especially in the first couple episodes where lines are written that are clearly going to become themes or like motifs in the show and so annalise asked the class do you do you know who anyone really is yeah and sort of turns it on asher totally yeah and by the way what it's like i
Starting point is 00:18:58 don't know this time for some reason watching now i feel like i have also a lot of empathy for her i'm like god what a hard and exhausting way to live but also truly in our world of the world that we've created you know a lot of betrayal yeah except for asher who had never heard of fly um which is just such cringe i also thought it was really i laugh when when you roll your eyes do you know if that was scripted or not i don't know probably not it was probably just me rolling my eyes yeah the fun thing the fun thing about like watching it is because i would never in a classroom scene i never would have seen you do that right in that reaction so i get to like as i watch it i'm like i get to experience how you were on the other side of the classroom responding
Starting point is 00:19:37 yeah yeah yeah that is true i hadn't thought about that where like you you you are seeing reaction scenes that's why what i like the most so far is like being like oh i just i get to see my friends act and the choices they made on the day right um anyway so we're in class ak sets up the case of the week and also shows some like incredibly graphic crime scene photos of the of the murder victim which like surely is not allowed i know aka not big on the trigger warnings not big on the trigger warnings west is clearly triggered yeah but also like you can't just like show right like confidential yeah you can't show that to anyway i don't know aka being potentially not a good lawyer or professor which right and sort of a theme um but yeah but yeah and she introduces
Starting point is 00:20:25 uh our our client of the week max max saint vincent played by the absolutely incredible stephen weber yes who i just worked with on chicago med i love that yeah i love that that's so cool again everyone's listening in the future but january 7th tonight on chicago med and steven weber future plug and that's airing tonight yeah the night that we're filming that's so cool so people will be listening and it will if if you want to watch a reunion you can go back and watch chicago med from january 7th i love that we'll be right back now back to class he i remember i i'd forgotten that that episode was our first episode in la because i remember traveling to the house it's supposed to be like his mansion and looking around and i remember like
Starting point is 00:21:14 just very specifically i have a photo i took like a selfie with one of the taxidermy animals on the wall and i remember the photo has such extreme like 2014 instagram filtering on it yeah and i'm doing like a duck face with it it's like it feels so like out of a very specific time that's so Um, and also I do remember Steven, I don't know what the context of this, but we were sitting like in the cast chairs waiting, you know, to go back to set. And I remember him saying to me, you know, make sure to save your money, which is just like great advice to a first time series regular, you know, from a seasoned. Yeah. For someone who's been in it for a long time. Also, I love Annalisa's look when Max is saying, an institution is barbaric as marriage. And she says, let's keep it moving. That's, it's just, I just laughed so hard.
Starting point is 00:22:06 So good. Yeah, so good. So they take us through the house and he shows us the primary bedroom with the blood splatter. And we also, in this scene, establish the tablets that we had to hold all the time. Yeah, that's right.
Starting point is 00:22:23 Because there was some sort of like brand deal or sponsorship or there was some agreement happening i think maybe with these these tablets and so we often were were told that one of us in the scene would have to be holding a tablet yeah i think i'm probably just i probably just violated some sort of thing but i don't think so no we're fine but you i think someone is taking a photo on a tablet which is also just behavior no one's ever done like no one's taken a tablet to use yeah as a camera no one under 65 sure i think it does i think it does happen but yeah like i hear people like parents or grandparents but yeah maybe i don't know i've personally never seen it but i love that it uh it showed up here you were taking
Starting point is 00:23:02 a photo with a tablet he asked for a volunteer i volunteer he hits me he hits me with the you're about as pretty as my wife was um and he throws me into bed um also i noted here in watching it that i am very confused because i'm wearing my boots like i'm wearing jack's boots and they are very not connor like they're like they're like grungy like right leather boots with like blue laces and i almost wonder if because i don't think we see them again in the episode i wonder if it's a mistake that i'm interesting like i wonder if i'm wearing my boots and i was supposed to so oftentimes for context viewers especially like some people like if you're wearing high heels or like really uncomfortable shoes the wardrobe department will give you slippers or like boots
Starting point is 00:23:48 or something to wear for comfort, you know, and then you'll switch into your uncomfortable shoes for a shot where they're going to see your feet. Right. I personally would never wear like the slippers they provided, but I would often wear my own footwear. And so I wonder, this would be a really big mistake also to make in the second, you know, the first episode back, like the first episode getting picked up, like I was really trying to do a good job.
Starting point is 00:24:16 So anyway, maybe it's not a mistake. Maybe I, maybe they liked my boot. I don't know, but it, it kind of bumped for me because it, they seem like pretty grungy Jack boots and not kind of boots. Right. Your boots, your boots in that episode are to my ass cots in the pilot. You're like something that was like, I was initially like, yeah, this is good. And then like, maybe we get rid of this. Yeah, totally. And then, you know, as I mentioned, I separated my shoulder before doing this. I literally was driving to set wearing a sling to restrict movement to my shoulder because it was so hurt. And I remember the surgeon was like, it was like Tom Brady's surgeon. And he was like, you need shoulder reconstruction. I was like, I don't have time, doc. and he's like okay and he's like well don't do anything like you know just immobilize it as much as possible and of course in our first episode back i'm like thrown onto this bed and steven weber has to you know hit me in this demonstration and of course he did not know no i don't think anyone knew that i was hurt for quite a while i might have told you guys maybe i don't know but he you know pounds my shoulder and it hurt quite a lot yeah i remember i had a reaction just at
Starting point is 00:25:26 the noise of it even i was wondering was if it was that loud in person or if it was just like amped up after i think it's amped up after i also think that like when you don't in when you don't actually see my chest he's certainly not hitting my chest right i'm sure they were having him hit something else maybe yeah yeah but there are yeah my face but there are some where he's like you know he's hitting my shoulder and it's sure sure you know newly separated all because of a boogie boarding accident um all right so we established that he allegedly stabbed the person 16 times and then we're back in ak's house the murder book all the all the evidence the prosecution has you know gathered we have to go do work this is us working with binders and folders and filing yeah um it
Starting point is 00:26:08 becomes a theme it becomes a theme of us just like sitting there with strewn papers and files paper us with paper and bonnie suggests to send the puppy to do some work i'm jealous that he already has two nicknames waitlist puppy and you have one i guess that's true i don't know if connor has a nickname yet but connor you know he sort of questions why weightless is there asher makes a joke about west being ak's baby which right you know yeah problematic a little bit um are you and then we have another we have like we have these scenes that that start to pop up where it's like closed door annalise scenes i don't know what to call them but like i think every now and then annalise like pulls someone behind a closed door and just has a one-on-one with them
Starting point is 00:26:55 yeah which as an actor also was cool too because like now's my time to act one-on-one with viola literally the best yeah literally like so excited to just do your one-on-one with viola and so wes and annalise sends him to the police station that's right he sends him to the police station he we get faux tech pumping the music starts to pick up whenever like any of the keating five yes yeah whenever the keating five are going and doing annalise's bidding we get some like really good faux tech music and they mistake him for someone working for the DA and they give him the arrest report. And then we're back in his weird BDSM apartment.
Starting point is 00:27:32 It's three 48 in the morning, which seems specific and Rebecca knocks in a towel and talking fast. Yeah. And they, Rebecca wants to come in and take a shower because her shower is broken, I guess. Yeah. Which we,
Starting point is 00:27:48 we learned later in the episode that this is actually a ruse, right? And that she wants to leave the phone there. I, yes, I think, I mean, I know that she leaves the phone there. I don't know if it's also a ruse or that would make sense, right? It'd be weirdly convenient for her to be broken. And then she's also like, you know, in the meantime, let me, let me do this too. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:07 Right, right. Yeah. Yeah. Like, I think the shower is probably not broken, right? Yeah. Probably. That's probably true. Right.
Starting point is 00:28:12 Yeah. Anyway, I, being a first time audience member though, watching it, I was like, oh, did she just come over for potential intimacy? right like i completely so many mixed yeah like i completely forget that she's actually stashing a phone right and it's just it's very there's a lot of confusing signals and the doors left open which is an interesting choice maybe to be distracting or maybe multiple goals hide the phone and peak interest or or leave the door open peak interest so that he remembers to look there Maybe she is puppeteering the entire thing because he is the puppy.
Starting point is 00:28:53 Right. The puppy and puppeteer, it sounds like a similar word. I see where you're going with this. Yeah, you get it. All right. So we don't know. It remains to be seen what Rebecca's motives are. Right.
Starting point is 00:29:05 Tune in next week. Right. But we poppy pop back to the woods where we are flipping a coin again. Right. And we see that we learned that Wes has lied about the coin flip. Yeah. which i missed on the last i've been re-watching each episode like kind of twice oh i tried to do one just for fun and then the other one just kind of work on it and so yeah smart but i totally
Starting point is 00:29:26 forgot that yeah and it's yeah yeah an interesting choice because you think you know you come into it thinking oh he's the honest one you know the we just established the puppy yeah and now he's being a liar you never know who anyone is you never the theme of the episode never trust anyone Yeah. So we established that Wes is a liar and he's forcing the Keating Five or Four to do something against their will. We then go back to present day where the Keating Five is watching the news about Lila Stangard. Wes recognizes Griffin from Rebecca's apartment. That doesn't seem great. No. And then we go into court. We challenge the chain of custody. We get the knife thrown out we are taking notes in court we are really taking notes in court right i was watching
Starting point is 00:30:15 this and i was like man we are fully committed fully committed like we're fully some fans on reddit were asking what would be your favorite how to get with murder court case to sit in on and i responded i sat in on most of them uh-huh and they were like which which is your favorite it. And I was like, I'm going to be honest, like gun to my head. I don't think I can name five court cases in How to Get With Murder. Yeah. Which is a product of my brain being, you know, my memory being what it is. But we've talked about this a little bit, but it is really hard to stay engaged for 12 hours when you're not, you're not like really participating in the scene. Right. Right. A lot of times you don't even know if you're on camera or not.
Starting point is 00:31:00 That being said, here we're like, we are dialed in. Yeah. We are taking notes. We are absolutely dialed in we are participating absolute fully yeah so i just wanted to call out that maybe it's a fun game to notice like when do we stop taking notes in court right or when do i and i think remember we were excited to stop doing that at some point too yeah yeah for sure it also i believe i think they thought it was distracting us taking notes i think that they i think that they thought it brought our eyes down too often and that they actually just wanted us like up and listening. Seems like now I would have rather gone for the taking notes. Honestly, you know, you get little breaks and in concentration where you're like, you know, get to look down and close
Starting point is 00:31:47 your eyes for a moment, you know, take a quick nap and then look up. It's true. It's true. Anyway, we will talk much more about court scenes, but I thought it was worth pointing out that we are aggressively taking notes because we're all really committed to this this scene people did by the way fall asleep in those scenes at some point so i'm not gonna we're not gonna name names but it's pretty great i wish it were me yeah um i'm terrible at napping as you know yes yeah was i listening to podcasts sometimes maybe we'll never know we'll never know um all right so we take we're all taking notes we attack the motive we're back in ak's house we're we're we're trying to you know we're trying to win the case but kayla suggests discrediting the murdered
Starting point is 00:32:31 wife's best friend and connor's like i'll take it from here and we cut straight to coliver hacking together yeah all of her just committing a federal crime for the promise of dinner on wednesday that's how into connor he is i guess yeah totally yeah he was in it to win it yeah and this i think starts to establish a very long history of Oliver specifically saves the day I think quite often for the Keating case totally
Starting point is 00:33:03 anyway so we destroy the alibi next we need a neighbor who saw Max so Frank picks prom queen and douche face so Michaela and Asher Michaela getting a nickname Connor still doesn't have one and you find or
Starting point is 00:33:19 Asher finds a receipt in the trash is that right Yes. Yeah. For his trip club so he can blackmail this nice young man. Got it. Yeah. Got it. So like blackmailing the family man neighbor into lying under oath and saying that he saw Max. Yes. I think that's right. Perfect.
Starting point is 00:33:42 Yeah. So we've now committed multiple crimes. Yeah. We're in the court hallway after the guy lies on the stand. AK calls Laurel Frank's girl. then ak runs into nate and this is the first time we've seen them together post last episode where she she blackmails him on the stand and she's kind of upset she's like why haven't you called why haven't you responded it's wild it's wild it's truly wild yeah i guess it makes you so
Starting point is 00:34:11 uncomfortable it makes me really uncomfortable i was watching this and i was like annalise you're being this is crazy like you you're you're destroying this man's life right please stop please don't do this to this man oh my god uh this man who who found out later also i think his wife has cancer yeah she brought it she brought it up well she was blackmailing him on the stand oh that's right yeah yeah yeah she's like your wife who was recently diagnosed with cancer i believe right so she i i wrote down in all caps i said this situation ship is toxic yeah and right as i was writing that nate responds you won your case you got laid so how how else can i be of service to you and then basically you know threatens annalise and says
Starting point is 00:34:55 if you call me again i'm going to tell your husband every single thing i did to you under his roof yeah which is you know good for nate taking some power back in this like incredibly toxic situation um i just want so she's probably the one that pays for the house but you know yeah That is true, actually. Right. Yeah. But if we're, you know, if we're really looking at it, you know, she's the one who's destroying everything. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:18 Well, we'll see. Yeah. What happens after Nate? We poppy pop back to the gas station. I'm singing again. So I think we go into the gas station. We see Wes. He now buys a phone, a burner phone.
Starting point is 00:35:35 He makes a call. He calls room 203. So. Votek. Votek. we poppy pop we are now into ak bedroom flashback annalise is looking through sam's phone um he's in the shower a lot of shower scenes in how he hurt her two in this two in this episode um she searches lila stangard and establishes that sam did in fact know her new and knew her well enough
Starting point is 00:35:59 that she is signing her emails just l instead of her name right right also you can tell by on the phone i mean just like the 2014 iphone graphics it's just it's really that felt so technologically cutting at the time and now it's just seems like you know a children's toy yeah a children's toy that's right yeah totally all right so then we go to rebecca and west's apartment and he now connecting her to griffin he tell he gives her good advice which everyone should you know hold on to which is if you get placed under arrest do not talk to the police without a lawyer present you should never ever talk to the police without a lawyer present yeah then laurel brings bonnie the prep questions for the daughter laurel asked bonnie if she's if she's there because frank
Starting point is 00:36:52 picked her and carla is so fucking good in this scene i love i just love her as laurel yeah and then um buys a while bonnie has this great line back i look nice but that's just my face yeah carla is so good as laurel here and i feel like you get to see one of her like trademarks here which is just like displaying a wide variety of emotions in like a very short sort of time span it's very captivating to watch yeah that you're right that is very carla and it's hard to do and it i don't know i was trying to break it down from an actor perspective to like some some of what i've seen her do and it feels like she's almost always like has the impulse to speak and when she's not speaking which i think is really effective and takes energy to do as an
Starting point is 00:37:41 actor but you taught you actually taught me that for auditions right i love that like when we worked on auditions or when we have in the past i remember you teaching me to like almost say something and then decide to say something else which we obviously do as humans all the time but you don't think about doing as an actor because every totally it's scripted but yeah you're right laurel laurel carla kind of has that sometimes as laurel where she like her her inner life is i don't know it's so active where it just feels like she's so sat into the scenes yeah but you're right i think it's most impressive to me when it is like in two sentences or three sentences totally like this like this scene and even sometimes i think in reaction shots where she has no line too
Starting point is 00:38:29 yes it's very subtle you know um yeah all of all of my reaction shots are just me thinking like i'm really hot and sweaty and she has like an entire like tapestry of story going on and i'm like i'm so hot get the camera off me you're very warm and and liza also you know incredible job in the scene it is true about her face you do think that and i guess because the faces she makes at sam which are very yeah you know friendly and adoring um but yeah just a really great moment great scene between the two of them there yeah fun fact my mom spoiled something about which is hilarious to say given that we we made the show we created the show but we my mom spoiled something about about bonnie about bonnie and i was like mom don't spoil anything and she's
Starting point is 00:39:17 like why are you like you you were on the tv show okay so they're both great and uh we're back in class can you trust your character witness on the stand which takes us to the introduction of eloise max's daughter played brilliantly by the laura cougar um she we're peppering her with with prep you know trial prep questions she takes the stand the prosecution you know it's it's going well until the prosecution starts asking questions. And then they reveal that Max's first wife was also murdered.
Starting point is 00:39:54 And also murdered with a hunting knife. I got it. I'm in control. You see Hunting Wives? Starring Katie Lowe's. Sean Owen family. Yeah, so we learned that his name was actually Stuart something. He has changed
Starting point is 00:40:10 his identity and was acquitted but was tried for his first wives murder who is his daughter's mother so i i'm not great like you don't want to hear that your dad potentially killed your mom and was having an affair and the look on his face when that's revealed too is just it's just diabolical he's just kind of like sitting there like just like staring off it's he plays it so well yeah he's so good and he you know we're back in the hallway max asks annalise if he would have taken his case if she'd known the truth and she has a
Starting point is 00:40:45 great you underestimate how much i like a challenge which again i think is a theme a motif we're back in ak's house we need to save the day we need to figure we need to figure out how to save the the case i'm explaining to oliver why i won't be able to make it for dinner because i'm working late and uh mckayla asks if i have boyfriend drama and i i have this line i don't do boyfriends which gets the wait you're gay yeah yeah i'm asher which is just incredible delivery i think it's so good what a sheltered young man i mean to not to not pick up on it to even have to have that response i mean the life that you must have lived to not be able to identify that is wild you know what i mean yeah but i kind of like it a little bit where it's just like
Starting point is 00:41:36 he doesn't mind you know yeah yeah Asher's just like oh my gosh you're gay yeah no I think it's like surprise and and curiosity and I don't know I guess in my mind I'm almost like does he know that he's ever met a gay person before like or is it in his upbringing in his like the school that he went to in the life that he lived as far as he knows it was everyone straight you know yeah it's wild yeah i can't wait for the cringy overcompensations that come in future episodes as well yeah there's gonna be a lot of that yeah yeah for sure asher's definitely living a different life than yeah now yeah totally but asher was in like kenneth bunkport maine you know in his father's mansion um yeah in like a probably heavily white uh heteronormative prep school
Starting point is 00:42:24 But I do, I do like that he, it doesn't seem like, I think the way that you played it, there was, there was no judgment. It was just surprise, which I think is correct in Asher as a character and person. Totally. And like deep down underneath maybe all of this conditioning. Right. And then Sam comes in, we pepper in a little bit of the Sam Bonnie romance. AK is drinking because court did not go well, which that we are foreshadowing. Foreshadowing. Um, my client is a liar, which, you know, that opens up the door to Sam and AK having a frank conversation of whether or not he was screwing her. And we kind of hear it like the Keating Five. It, to me as an audience member, I was a little confused.
Starting point is 00:43:11 I was like, oh, are they here? Are they actually hearing the words they're saying? Or are they, are they just hearing? Yelling. Yelling. Right, right, right. It was unclear to me. So I'm curious if that comes back.
Starting point is 00:43:23 I don't remember. I think that Tom Verica is so good in this. I think he's convincing and charming and dark and all the things. And they, I guess, sort of sweep it under the rug and start making out. We're back in the bedroom. Oh, we go back to the house. We go back to Max's house and the scene of the crime to try and figure out what defense we can use to get him off.
Starting point is 00:43:49 That's right, which I remember very clearly we shot in the same day because i was like we didn't go back there at night but we just you know we used we blocked the windows that sort of thing um which makes sense because yeah everything you're shooting in tv and film for the audience is like based in the availability of the set basically especially if you're not shooting on the sound stage where everything is available to you all at once it's like yeah how many days did you rent this house for right and to be clear this was this was a location yeah meaning we were not on the studio lot we drove to a mansion somewhere outside of la and yeah we would have shot everything there in one day right presumably yeah so we're shooting
Starting point is 00:44:29 yeah the stuff we're taking the pictures on my ipad there during the day and um working through this walking through the foyer right me on the bed your shoulder being separated in real time um and then later yeah and then way later in the episode yeah and then right that's exactly it um so laurel comes to save the day looking at all the taxidermy he's under um so we decide to put him on the stand and establish that he knows how to kill um there's another sort of perverted presentation where bonnie has to go up and uh max shows how to effectively slice someone's jugular in court um it's way too excited about it it's way too excited and uh it's real weird and then aka annalise asks is that how you murdered your first wife and he
Starting point is 00:45:17 says yes that's correct and the court goes crazy bombshell yeah absolutely bombshell i mean that was that's a really just what a great way of revealing instead of just being like we could use a double jeopardy and then you know and then there's no surprise it's just like yeah it's really shocking yeah and this is a good like for the viewer i mean reaction shots you see all of us in court reacting to that line that delivery of information and that will be the culmination of like many hours like eight hours of filming where then they may only use us reacting for like literally one or two seconds right right ak then brings up the chief medical examiner who suggests pretty heavily that the first murder and the second murder there's no shot that they were
Starting point is 00:46:06 they were committed by the same person we're back in the hallway wes you know he pieces it together They're looking at Eloise's reaction in court, but Wes is like, I think I figured out who did the murder. We poppy pop to Frank, who's got the file, and the file tells us that the email to the DA was sent from a Stanford computer lab where Eloise is studying poetry.
Starting point is 00:46:34 And Annalise congratulates Laurel and Wes, saying the quiet ones are usually the most dangerous. Right. and then we win we win the court case slow motion out of court you know us walking out something i was watching this because there's like this aside the something i thought while watching this was like bonnie and frank have this like a side where bonnie's like don't like stop with laurel you know right right and frank's like no you're the one we we got to watch out for like right you think the only one that doesn't see stuff in the house like you know about her and sam do are like bonnie
Starting point is 00:47:09 and frank friends like are they going to get beers after work i don't i don't know that's a good question i don't know what their relationship is at this point in this story darling yeah i mean there's definitely some adversarialness because they do make jokes they do but also like in this like toxic of like a work situation in the household i mean that's like that's like the least of probably anything that's like that's like you know at least they're being up front about what they think in those moments you know what i mean like that's right yeah truly yeah so they're probably not they're probably not getting beers after work i kind of imagine not yeah yeah i kind of imagine not yeah but we uh yeah we anyway we do that slow motion steady cam like
Starting point is 00:47:52 pulling us through the court hallway into the elevator which is not a real elevator you know it's just us walking into an elevator door that then closes. And there's people who are manually operating the doors that like have to time it. Yeah. And then, and then with that many background actors in the scene, they're also coordinating basically how, how packed it is, how much they're like getting in front of us and stuff. And I remember that in this scene,
Starting point is 00:48:21 particularly it kept being too dense for many takes in the beginning. And I'm the last one out. So I like, I kept not being able to, I'm like clawing my way through the audience, like, and, and just like leaning into like terror and fear for some reason, partly just because it's fun. Cause I knew that the image from inside the elevator was me trying to claw my way through just like with terror on my face, trying to make it to the elevator and just wanting to make people laugh. But I remember at least a couple takes where, because there were people were so dense, I
Starting point is 00:48:54 couldn't make it through in time and they closed the doors and I was just standing there like beating on the elevator door and like screaming which is like always a fun moment as an actor like because when something ruins the take that's not your fault yeah yeah then you kind of get to do whatever you want for like a moment yeah that's exactly it's like a parallel universe where you get to you know improvise and it doesn't cost anyone any money and it's just fun um totally and yeah i remember that i mean you you you have some of the like absolute legendary bloopers that we would we would watch like right oh yeah at the wrap parties of every season yes and i feel like i think this must have been on one of the blooper i think it was
Starting point is 00:49:32 because i remember it vividly now that you're yeah you're playing it for our it's so good just you're like oh my god please yeah yeah i don't know why i would even be that that scared right just like a new there's like a zombie apocalypse scare exactly yeah that's how i was um so we leave we we we presumably leave the courthouse and we are outside do you remember where we were this was actually at at los angeles city hall got it yeah our holding area i think a lot of them where we were was like in in like right inside but it was at city hall in la which is pretty wild yeah that is wild to think about have been to many protests there yeah um all right So then Connor goes to Oliver's, he brings takeout as a sort of trying to make amends
Starting point is 00:50:23 that he missed their dinner date. He's got the real sassy, you're too old to be a twink line. And then call for sex. So far that makes, that's two for two, two episodes, two sex scenes. Right. Smart also to engage in the sexual play first, right? Especially if you're doing butt play instead of having a heavy, heavy takeout, you know, it's a good, it's a good move to wait.
Starting point is 00:50:46 It's a little PSA. Sure. thank you for our sexual health PSA. Keep those coming. You got it. Absolutely. And then we go from their sex scene to Sam and AK have a romantic candle at dinner to celebrate
Starting point is 00:51:00 her big win. Right. But while he's down in their wine cellar, which also really jumped out to me. I was like, they have a wine cellar? Yeah, I don't think we ever see it. No, I was like, it's a crazy thing to establish and then never have us be in a wine cellar. Totally. Yeah. You know what I mean? Like, what a great
Starting point is 00:51:16 location for literally anything like a steamy hookup, you know, but I mean, it also shows you the limitations of making anything and budgets where it's like, oh, do we want to spend if we're going to spend the money to build a wine cellar set that we need to use the wine cellar set often. Totally. Yeah. Yeah. So it didn't make the cut. I don't think I don't think we ever have a wine cellar. No, I don't think so. I yearn for one. While he's getting wine, she Annalise checks his phone and discovers that he has deleted everything with Lila that she's already seen. So that is sus. Remember folks, it's the coverup, not the crime. Usually she caught, she bounces and then confronts poor Nate at his house. Like leave this man alone. Yeah. Please, please stop.
Starting point is 00:52:03 She asks Nate for help. And I'm like, why? Why? What? Screaming his name outside the window. And And I'm literally imagining his wife just like on the first floor on the other side, like with her head, like next to the window sleeping, like recovering from like, you know, chemotherapy from that day or something. And just hearing, you know, her husband's name being screamed by another woman outside. I don't know. Yeah. I, it even took me a while into the scene to be like, why is she even here? Right. and i guess it's to get she wants nate to check on sam's alibi that she like can't live
Starting point is 00:52:41 she can't live with the ambiguity if her husband the person she's you know nesting with right is capable of murder which he sort of rejects like oh maybe maybe he slept with his student but that doesn't mean he's capable you're taking work home with you essentially and she has that great line we're all capable of terrible things, Nate. Which again, I think another theme of the show. But I think that they both play this scene like expertly. Because I do think I'm like, even in her going to him,
Starting point is 00:53:13 like I'm starting to have my wheels spin. I'm like, is there a reason why she's, you know, approaching him and not say like Frank or, you know. Yeah, totally. The desperation, like it's all very messy. and i think messy is good for storytelling ultimately totally yeah and i think specifically that was something that viola really wanted to bring into it you know and and was and was responsible for a lot of making sure that that was a part of it too you know which was really
Starting point is 00:53:42 yeah important and great and maybe not as common in like network television yeah i think that's right as well yeah and i think that like it it's it's more true to life right that like people make they make messy decisions and they make mistakes often even in even in the less messy decisions like there are mistakes within those right so i think yeah i think it is it's really cool to watch and be frustrated with the characters you know like why are you doing this like this is this is a very poor choice on your right especially as someone who's so capable in in this other way right she's like that's right she's like the best at what she does in the courtroom and is so messy outside of it yeah yeah and this is all intercut with her later sleeping with sam which
Starting point is 00:54:28 is even messier and more confusing yeah and then we go to wes's apartment we're in the apartment stairwell and i was watching this and i was like did we i don't know i can't remember ever having a scene on the apartment stairwell myself but maybe later i have one of the most i'll tell you off the call so there's no spoilers but um the one of the most important scenes of your life my character arc yeah of my entire life in that stairwell wow in the last season we're gonna beep it out for the audience just so no spoilers but asher yeah what yeah okay whoa yeah okay that's fucking great okay sure okay i didn't really remember any of that but that's yeah um so all right well capable of terrible things that she gets arrested uh rebecca gets arrested stairwell wes tells her
Starting point is 00:55:35 not to say anything don't talk to the police and then oh wes is watching the stuff on the the laptop the like coverage of griffin and and rebecca getting arrested in conjunction with lila's murder and then he remembers her showering and the phone and something like a makeup bag or something going underneath his sink he goes sees like a loose board pries it open and finds a phone we don't know whose phone and then that poppy pops to night x where wes is biking up to a motel, room 203, who, you know, this is the person he was talking to in the gas station earlier and boom, Rebecca opens the door. Rebecca looks less goth.
Starting point is 00:56:22 Rebecca, you know, he says, never leave me again. He's like, I'm not going anywhere. And then they, they share a big old smooch, um, which I was like, great. Yeah. Good for them. It's nice. I'm glad they have each other. I'm glad that they have each other too.
Starting point is 00:56:39 And then that's the end of the episode, right? Yeah. Wow. I think so. I think so. Wow. So much. I love just the little, like, you get the treat at the end and then you figure out how it happens, you know?
Starting point is 00:56:54 That's right. So that sets us up for the next episode, which is episode three, Smile or Go to Jail, which is unfair because I know who says Smile or Go to Jail. you want to take a guess yeah i do i think i know i think i remember yeah yeah i think it's you is yeah it's connor for sure um yeah i'm gonna i'm gonna forget all the others though if they aren't my line and even sometimes that they are my line do you say to michaela specifically i think so i think we're like taking we're trying to like do an alibi or something right we're trying to do an alibi we're trying to do an alibi in front of a bonfire right and i'm yelling at michaela i think um i liked this episode i thought it was good i thought steven weber was like absolutely
Starting point is 00:57:49 sensational yeah i think too that i think we just get really i've said this before but i think we we continue to stay very lucky throughout the course of the seasons that the like the people that come in for like a one-off like that are just absolute rock star actors totally and so he I think really set the bar pretty high for everyone coming after that yeah he did a great job with that and it's a really fun yeah just a really fun role yeah it's a really fun role and like I think he made it very his own like you could play that in like a pretty straight sort of like boxy way totally but i think like the color and nuance and how flamboyant and and you know his his performance is just like it's so fun and imaginative that i think it allowed those
Starting point is 00:58:41 scenes to be um a little bit maybe more than even what they were on the page which just speaks to him as an actor totally yeah um i'm also by the way really excited and almost like drooling for the next episode because i uh you know we we started we've been watching it and we've had we did more of the guest sort of uh podcast episodes in between so we they've been really spaced out in terms of how often we've been watching them so we we've shot we've done i don't know recorded maybe like five this is maybe our fifth one or something that we've only watched two episodes plus the two-week break we took for the holidays i'm like i'm excited and ready to see episode number three and i want it now and i want it now give it to me yeah i'm i am also excited i
Starting point is 00:59:25 also i don't have any i was gonna ask for predictions for myself of what happens but i can't i don't have i don't i don't know i have no idea yeah what is what is the case of the week even do we know i feel like that would that would at least spark a little bit no i couldn't tell you there's no i just i can't tell you i remember there being a fire like i remember there being i think we go to the bonfire that's my prediction is that we go to the bonfire and that's all i got is it the sutter case episode 103 smile i go to jail i don't even know who sutter is no rebecca so i'm just saying something rebecca sutter that's katie's character no i think you're right which which brings up i think on the call sheet i think i looked at
Starting point is 01:00:09 the call sheet for this episode that would have like you know been out like given to us when we were this is fun bts too maybe is that i went back you know these are emails are from 2014 right so they're 12 years ago and there's an email chain between me elfie and katie where we're forwarding the call sheet to each other because one of us isn't getting the call sheet that's really and we have like work in two days on our new tv job and for whatever reason it was probably elfie like not having an email address or something, but could receive emails. But Katie's like forwarding it to me. I'm forwarding it to Alfie and it's, it's, it's great. But on the call sheet, Rebecca is Rebecca Dixon. So they must've changed Rebecca's name at some point. Yeah. I think Rebecca Sutter
Starting point is 01:00:56 and maybe it's her, her case, because I know that Annalise takes her case and stuff. You know, we, we should start, we should start grasping in, in the dark for, um, for some of this and just in case it doesn't in case it gets old for the audience but uh we'll find that out in the reviews hopefully yeah we're gonna find out jack we'll find out on the reddit yeah exactly we're tired of hearing about jack's garbage memory right no uh i'm excited though for next week and i'm excited after that we will be airing some of the aforementioned uh interviews with with cast members and i personally have been talking to a couple other cast members about getting their availability. Um, and yeah, I'm generally feeling
Starting point is 01:01:42 very good about this. I'm psyched. I love that. I am too. I've also just a small side note. I've been on Reddit for the first time ever. I've been trying to get off my other social media things. And how'd you do it? I, well, basically I've, I've been, I'm now like five days off of every other social media. And I was like, let me pick something that feels like it's not going to be as addictive. It's going to be like a little, um, I'm in a very specific niche community that I'm not going to name because I'm not going to blow myself up. Um, but it's still pretty addictive. So I might have to also add that to the list of things that I'm not on. But anyway, it's my first time like ever being on Reddit. Yeah. Just don't go to like the home or popular,
Starting point is 01:02:20 just, just try and look through. I'm bad at this. I mean, you know me for like, I'm constantly breaking my own rules, but yeah, they, I mean, it's like all these social media platforms, they want you to they want you to be on there and spending time so they're they make it pretty difficult to not be addictive yeah um it's like what we do with the podcast because we're so good at it that it's hard for people not to listen to it that's right yeah yeah that's that's exactly i love that we're i love that we're still in the zone where we have no idea if anyone's listening because it hasn't been released it's true it's so true we're in that sweet spot which again i mean that that was part of the fun of like filming this episode of how to get away with murder
Starting point is 01:03:01 because for the first couple we were still in that bubble where we just had no they just weren't out we had no idea if people were going to watch or not yeah and ultimately of course that's what you want but you still get this nice little protected bubble time where it's like it's just nice to make it yeah it was a really nice time and it was like the beginning of our like i remember on set us just being like talking about like the apartment you got and you know we were asking each other advice on i don't know just like places to go and eat and we were we were still figuring it all out yeah did you know to drive yet no did you no no wait no did i get my license just in time i think i might have got my license just in time yeah i hadn't been driving obviously because living in
