Episode Date: March 19, 2026In Episode 5, “We’re Not Friends,” we start to see the early evolution of Connor and Asher’s dynamic and how that unexpected friendship started to take shape both on-screen and off. M...att and Jack share memories of building that chemistry in real time, alongside a deep dive into the show’s famously fast-paced dialogue. From memorizing dense legal jargon to finding a rhythm that made it feel natural under pressure, the guys look at how those early character beats and actor choices helped define the series. We want to hear from you! hey everyone my name is matt mccorry and i played the character asher millstone on how to get away
with murder and i'm jack fallahy and i played connor walsh on that very same tv show and this
is the how we got away with murder podcast hello friend boom dia hello hello listeners
Hello, those at home like us.
Those at home like us.
In our domiciles.
I just said Bom Dia, which is good morning in Portuguese, but it's actually afternoon where we are.
Is that right?
Yeah, we're both on East Coast time.
That is true.
Sorry, is that right?
It was about what you were saying.
I didn't realize that that's how I was too afraid to ask what you were saying.
Oh, Bom Dia.
Yeah.
I picked that up from our friend, Alfred Enoch, who speaks Portuguese and is Brazilian.
How are you doing?
How's your week been?
I'm good.
i'm very cold it's fucking freezing in new york as you know literally um walked by bryant park
the other day and the fountain was like frozen like it was like uh yeah it looked like sub-zero
had um yeah got had a fight with it yeah yeah yeah um but saw a great play at playwrights horizons
mass required performance of watch me walk by ann gridley it's a disabled performer and um
cool yeah it was really great yeah it was yesterday that's right i'll check that out
um yeah i've really been enjoying the winter the wintry weather i missed i missed seasons
living in la for the last 12 years but the the michigan in me is really thriving right now but
it's cold even for me like it's it's pretty brutal out yeah it's colder in michigan generally though
isn't it than new york yeah it depends where you are but yeah okay generally it's like a little
bit more wintry especially if you're like on the water on the lakes yeah it's pretty brutal the
west side of the state especially and then other than that just been rehearsing so when this is out
yeah i think i will be in previews for death of a salesman um so come see it very exciting yeah
it's very very exciting and then we wanted to dedicate this episode to our dear friend scott
who was a beloved member of the howdy with murder community and family and the show wouldn't have
been what it is without his many contributions um so this one's this one's for you scott
love you scott buddy okay let's get into it uh this is episode five of season one it is called
we're not friends which we guessed which we both guessed incorrectly your guess was michaela my
guess was bonnie and we are going to get to it very quickly this is this is an early titular
line delivery um it was written by tracy belomo directed by mike listo who i love aired on october
23rd 2014 and it was filmed in los angeles august 22nd to september 4th matt hit us with the log
line you know i will annalise mounts a ruthless defense for a teenager accused of killing his
police officer father turning the courtroom into a high-stakes battle over truth loyalty and control
as alliances fracture and suspicions close in flash forwards reveal how laurel and frank's
secret ties pull them closer to the night that sam keating died you that was really good thank
you it's my first time reading it really you just cold that was good yeah i'm impressed thank you
bringing back the cold read skills oh yeah it's because i am so cold right now i think that's
what's helping exactly cold acting cold there we go here it is a lot of people sided with you
that they thought that i was talking about being emotionally cold and not physically cold i saw
that so yeah i guess i'm a big dum-dum for assuming that's the takeaway that environmentally
cold acting made sense as a right as a phrase right right i mean given your own personal
context of where you come from that doesn't make sense thank you there were some midwesterners
sticking up for me which i appreciate love love you guys that's good um okay so this i i i have
i have no recollection of this episode so watching it was was very fun for me wow um things came up
though this is this is i think is an example of like me watching the show and then having memories
come back to me that i thought were forever lost totally yeah i mean it's it's amazing how many
memories come up because we just have something so vivid to like i mean if you told me if you
just sat me down and asked me to describe all my experiences of how to get with murder i probably
you know it's in 20 minutes would be done telling you about it but the fact that we get to watch
episode by episode it's just like all these little gems of memories it's just being uncovered yeah
totally yeah i like like there's some like memory like clawing its way out of my you know it's like
like pulling apart coming through
for some reason my my image is like it's sort of like a demon or something yeah it actually
would be well there's a violent image yeah same um yeah ripping your chest we can unpack that
later all right so previously on we're right back into it uh it reminds us that annalise went to
nate to check for sam's alibi nate lies to annalise uh west brings the phone with the photos
and boom why is your penis on a dead girl's phone they hit us with that iconic line again before we
are into the episode and we are picking up from a scene that we had previously shot so this is the
scene where laurel gets a phone call what the hell is going on and then we pick up and film
additional footage of this scene where laurel reveals that she slept with frank connor questions
if she's a cheater and we get the we're not friends line very very early in the episode
i will say that if i knew because the line is really like why would i tell you we're not friends
for some reason if i had that extra context i feel like i'd be much more likely to guess
that it was laurel or at least not michaela okay well it doesn't count you were wrong so moving on
well no no we just need to give ourselves more context we need to do the whole in order to be
to guess the line yeah exactly um but i do want to use this scene really quickly to talk about
this from a production standpoint where as the viewer and you know we've already filmed the scene
up until laurel getting the phone call and all of us you know we're kind of like hiding on the side
of the hill and we ask her why frank's calling her so when we would film episode five you know
we would get the script and it would include the existing scene that we've already shot and that
would all be in bold and then the new scene would not be in bold so bold in the script and the actual
pdf of the script would indicate we've already shot this and then we would continue with the new
footage that we needed to shoot and there's you know several scenes that take place night x in
this episode they're all in the woods they're all shot the same night in griffith park so it was one
friday the 28th or whatever the friday was of that week and we would have shot all of those scenes
in this night yeah you would have we would have okay not me not you because you're not there not
yet yeah because i'm not there i don't think also for some reason seeing you guys with the plastic
like grocery store bags of sam's body just like hit very different for me you're like walking
around the woods with these plastic bags full of sam's fucking like you know guts and stuff
i don't know for some reason that felt so especially dark to me matt i don't think that's
sam's body you don't know what is it i think sam's body goes in these like big garbage bags
i think like the grocery store bags is like the the stuff to start the fire really yeah i don't
think like i don't think we have like you know little little gross you know gas station bags
with sam's body oh my god that makes so much more sense just like his fingers falling out
what do you mean no i mean that'd be a terrible idea you want to get it all together you don't
want to have it in a bunch of i don't know i thought maybe it's like oh yeah it seems less
suspicious maybe everyone's having a picnic in the woods if someone sees you you know rather than
like a grocery bag but yeah no i think we go i think we go into some like trash like contractor
bags i think right okay that makes sense we'll tune in we'll find out yeah uh all right so we're
we're in class six weeks earlier uh laurel's standing up for herself uh annalise likes that
laurel's doing that um i think viola struggles a bit to say voir dire throughout because it's
impossible to say i just have this memory of her being like voir dire voir voir dire voir dire
is that right yeah like just doing her like voice and speech training to like really get it in her
mouth yeah because a lot of people have asked like i mean there is a lot of legalese that like if you
don't say these words frequently in your life, then they kind of, I, I, I stumbled with them
all the time. Right. And I have, I have a memory, a vague memory of, of Viola being a little
frustrated with voir dire. That's funny. There's one other moment that happened to get into when
it comes up. I don't know if you remember it, but there's a specific name that she. Yeah. Yeah.
We'll get there. That's a good one. Um, all right. Wes comes up after class and asks about the phone
And Annalise suggests that she might not even turn it over to the police, which flashes us back to where last episode left off, where she has just said the iconic line.
She's at she's laying in Sam about how long it went on, how many times did they sleep together?
And he tells her six or seven in his office and in her car once and that he didn't he, you know, all of the normal stuff.
Like he didn't want to tell her because he didn't want Annalise to think that he hurt her and it was just sex and you know, he loves her and it starts to get really physical where Sam becomes very threatening very quickly and ultimately like puts hands on Annalise.
like he puts his hand over her mouth and sort of shoves her onto the bed and um she bites him to
get him off and there's yelling and it was really difficult i mean it's great work from both viola
and sam because it was just really difficult for me as a viewer to watch totally yeah tom verica
who plays sam keating is such a sweet kind man yes in real life but does such a great job of
playing an asshole um which reminds me of another shondaland regular who does this very well as
tony goldwyn who's such a nice approachable sweet guy but plays like a villain so well like
whether it's in hacks or ghost which is one of my favorite movies the character of carl is like
one of the ultimate villains i feel like but anyway it's it's just it's fun and interesting
to see people who play villains so well on screen who are just like not at all like that in person
you know yeah i couldn't agree more yeah and i think too like i didn't see that many i didn't
have that many scenes with sam like connor and sam didn't have that many scenes and so i really
didn't get to see tom work all that much yeah and so to actually get to watch this as a viewer i was
like damn like this is some acting i love this we'll be right back now back to class anyway so
there's there's some physical strife between Annalise and Sam and we cut downstairs we see
that Bonnie overhears it Sam leaves the house runs into Bonnie knows that she knows creating more
tension between the two of them which has started to been you know have been sprinkled in quite a
bit and we're back to the classroom where Wes is still trying to convince Annalise to use the phone
and she won't and he is very confused and she just she shuts it down and then boom we are in
the ak house and we have a great great monologue from uh the the new client who is played by
ryan yeah ryan is his name played by julian de la cell um and explaining why he he killed his
abusive cop father and it's just really good work here like really strong for sure and like i think
that in watching this it made me think about how how hard it was I think oftentimes for actors
where like they'd be given these like really emotional monologues and they'd have to come in
and it was oftentimes like they're you know if the schedule happened to lay out a certain way it
would be like their first day of work where they are sitting yeah sitting on a couch literally
facing the 10 of us or whatever and you know Viola Davis is sitting there with her like arms crossed
watching you as her new potential client and yeah i would be very intimidated but it feels it feels
like everyone just came in and like knocked it out of the park consistently yeah yeah that would
have been extremely intimidating for sure also i think important to note as a theme in this episode
and again you know flashing back to my earlier self who had no social consciousness who at the
time of this episode probably just saw this as i don't know kind of like an isolated thing but
police officers do have much higher rates of committing domestic violence than the general
population. Some studies show that up to 40% of police officers' families experience domestic
violence, as opposed to 10% of the general population, which 10% is still a lot, but 40%
is an enormous amount. I just, I don't know, some part of me wished that there was some way to
have those statistics in the episode. I feel like, you know, that I would have been like,
oh, this is like part of a larger thing. Interesting. Anyway, but just context for
for the audience and everyone yeah i mean you would like it would have almost made sense if
that was like part of like that was a defense that right keating five it may be explored
right i hadn't even thought of that you know like if yeah laurel suggested it right it would have
made sense yeah yeah but to that point the fact that the abuser and victim is a cop is a obviously
big theme throughout the episode annalise tells the keating five that this case isn't just you
know, it's not a normal case. It's them against the police and that they're not going to win on
evidence. They're going to win on the emotions of the jury. So we are back with this pesky term
voir dire in class and Annalise is teaching us about jury selection. And basically that we have
to find jurors, jurors, that's our argument too, jurors who are prone to distrust authority. And
then we go into a very classic how to get with murder montage absolutely it's super punchy it's
super fun it's got that faux tech you know she's teaching us in class intercut with us in the
courtroom and her and the the prosecution are accepting and excusing different jurors based
on different things there's like little jokes that are like peppered throughout you know to
keep it yeah so entertaining it's totally well it just keeps the energy up i love the guy who says
we don't call the police in my neighborhood right sure yeah um yeah yeah i mean they have like all
of these like very uh singular lines that that fully communicate like someone's point of view
surrounding this for sure whatever side they may be on right and from there we are in court and the
prosecution is trying to throw out the any testimony of the abuse which you know kind of
seems like the entire case that we have yeah and there's specifically this like online journal
that Ryan has kept for three years that the judge throws out. And as a viewer, I don't really
understand why he says it's hearsay, but I'm like, okay, I don't know. Yeah. You know, that's just me
not understanding the law, I guess. Maybe, maybe, maybe, or maybe it's just, you know, convenient.
Yeah. We don't know. Yeah, for sure. We don't know. Nobody knows. Nobody knows. And that takes
us into the courtroom hall where Laurel is, this is like sort of Laurel's episode, you know, like
we're very much like following Laurel's point of view throughout this episode.
And Frank comes in with just a great, you know, want to grab a,
want to grab a bite. I know, I know a great hoagie place down the street,
which might be my favorite line of the episode.
I love he also kind of ran after her too.
It felt like a little vulnerable sort of like, you know,
it's like running to catch up with her. Yeah.
I also just like as a, as a viewer of any television or film,
I like when people talk about food, but don't eat it. Like,
because eating food is so inconvenient on screen which will we like we will have scenes that we
get to and talk about this more in depth but there's like a reason why you don't see eating
that often i think totally but i like when people talk about it i like when characters are like oh
yeah no i know a great place you know and then they just never you never see them actually like
eat a hoagie right right i do remember though that frank has a special meatball recipe he sure does
i remember yeah i remember i don't remember a whole lot about i think we all dude i cannot wait
i i can't wait to have charlie weber on this podcast yeah and talk about his processes frank
yes oh my god i can't how many meatballs did you eat charlie yeah so good um anyway laurel
is upset that he's thinking about food and not this case when they're entire and then she
you know she goes off in this like heated little monologue about how ryan's gonna
to go to prison and be someone's bitch and we pan over and rides over her the entire conversation
wild which is wild and then charlie has another great frank line where he says relax he'll be
fine unless he goes home and shoots himself yeah just unbelievable delivery from charlie weber it's
great you can see that he's like pissed that she didn't want to get the hoagie yeah exactly
yeah that takes us to annalise's house um where bonnie is assigning us pet jurors to watch
and you know there's some jokes going back and forth asher's like making jokes at connor like
it like really looks like the beginning of you know asher wanting to be friends you know
like it's like these like little like olive branches almost totally yeah and and i think
like connor kind of likes it you know like he's not he's not like spitting back at asher he's like
engaged which i like yeah and also it seems like he enjoys like asher's like you know kind of
sheltered ignorant homophobia and connor seems to enjoy like throwing out little things that like
throw asher and make him feel uncomfortable yes well totally yeah yeah absolutely and i like that
i think that we in real life are all starting to become more comfortable with each other and
and figure out each other's like comedic timing and like yeah you know and i i think you can start
to feel that in this episode that like thing things are like kind of like sticking better in
like a delectable way i think yeah i really enjoyed how you said that you didn't want the
lumberjack as well that's really funny to me also i'm noticing here that like my line delivery i
think particularly for like the one one or two liners is like very quick yeah i think you know
going back in time i would probably do it a little differently i've realized that you know there's
obviously when I auditioned knowing the world of Shondaland you know even though we're still
fast-paced it's maybe not as fast-paced as like Scandal you know I think but in the audition I
remember the casting director was suggesting that I speed it up and I did it very fast
and you know in hindsight realizing there's like there's a line between like wanting to do exactly
what production wants you to do wanting to be a really good team player because the episodes are
always too much written in order to be filmed so yeah and you know getting positive feedback of
like how quick i'm saying the lines whereas i feel like some of the other actors would kind of
toe the line a little bit more where they're they're trying to slow things down which i think
ultimately is better for the performance you know even if it makes the editor's job and director's
job a little bit harder because it's not necessarily as quick and so i think like looking
back i think i did i did that partially also knowing that when i had scenes where there was
more space that i would take that space but i think looking back i would probably have taken
a little more of my time with it a little more pauses and stuff like that um it's just interesting
to note especially like as a you know early in my career trying to be quote unquote you know team
player and you know do the thing that's good for everyone yeah i mean like i think that that made
you an asset on set right like i wouldn't do that like i wouldn't go because we get going like go
faster was a note that we got very frequently i mean to your point this episode on the page is 58
pages. So if it's a minute per page, which is kind of standard in television, that would be 58
minutes. But these episodes are only 42 minutes. So right, you know, that's 16 minutes, they have
to either cut out of the episode or condense in some way. Yeah. And obviously, there's some like
really cool editing that we see throughout the show that helps move things along. But I think
that you and and many other actors on set were also like very helpful in propelling the dialogue
forward yeah it's it's such a balance right because you're like you want to do what's good
for the for the whole but also the performance can suffer in some ways by doing that so i think
you know and but being the person who's always like just willing to do it faster then i feel
like it kind of i don't know for me i'm like could have been better i think though that like
you, you rose to that occasion because you were capable of, I think, maintaining your performance
at a quick pace. Like, I really think that like me being greener and newer to this, like I would,
I would look to you often in those moments because I felt very, I don't know. I think that if I had
to move at a clip, I often felt like my performance was kind of falling apart and not, not specific.
And so, yeah, it was something that like I learned a lot about, I think, over the six seasons. But I think that you started at such a strong, like improv comedy, like all of these tools that you had, like clowning, like, you know, everything at your disposal that like moving faster, I think, was something that you were very capable of.
I appreciate that. Yeah. Oh, easier to do with comedic lines, too, than delivering mostly dramatic. But yeah, I appreciate that.
The other thing I wanted to point out is that it's nighttime and like, you know, the house was dark. Right. And how disorienting it was to shoot on a set on a stage all day in a dark house that was, you know, nighttime. And then you would go outside and it would be a bright L.A. sunny day.
Yeah. Yeah. Very disorienting. Yeah. Yeah.
All right. Moving along, we're back in court. Ryan's English teacher is on the stand saying that he was a troubled student. He wrote these lines in a song for a talent show. Laurel wants us to get the date of the talent show. She goes on the blog. She figures out that he had written these song lyrics months before the talent show, which then allows us to maybe get this admitted into court as evidence, which seems very good for us.
yeah is that allowed by the way for someone in the in the like the box or whatever i don't know
what the fuck the audience the audience yeah sure yeah the people watching uh the thing to just kind
of like lean isn't called like the galley or something like that yeah the gallery not the
gallery right the galley i don't know the gallows not the gallows this is perfect as people are
always like do you guys learn stuff about being lawyers yeah and we're like what do you think we
don't even know where we sat yeah exactly yeah i don't know i'd say answer your question i'm
probably not like no i don't think a law student can like communicate i don't know right because
then otherwise like each law team would just have like a hundred people behind them like just
ideating at all times and looking up things on their phone yeah i think probably not but sure
she she helps the case and it's she does it's good massively and then we go to a scene i really like
where Rebecca just you know saunters right into great scene I love it right into Wes's apartment
because she smells pizza yeah flirting and it's like it's very cute yeah seems like Wes doesn't
know that flirting is happening or he's his version he's just like you know I think he's
like trying to be professional right yeah true that would be my guess is that like he's he's
trying to keep it together but like yeah kind like he kind of flirts a little bit towards the end of
the scene we see rebecca's walls kind of come down a little bit for the first time which is
really satisfying i do love that moment though so i'm not the only one with issues clearly not
yeah katie really lights up the screen yeah i agree in that moment absolutely for sure
and then also something was revealed uh on instagram hannah michelle b i was like wait
for a second i had a flash memory i'm like did asher ended up living in west's apartment
he did he did apparently um hannah michelle b confirmed that thank you for that you know it
look different because the decor was different um and um you completely forgot i completely
forgot because i mean so did i you know like that's your that's your i know but when you you
know for the audience to realize when you're walking on set it's not like you're walking into
a familiar apartment building and then you're and then you're like oh this reminds me of the thing
you're walking on to like just like a room that is built in the middle of a studio and i guess i
never was i i never was in that apartment i don't think as far as i can recall when it was west's
apartment asher was never in that and and i probably wasn't either um this is me defending
myself defending yourself but i think maybe poorly i'm like sure that's fine that's fine
and then apparently you do find out at some point by the way what the like the the marks are on the
wall above the bed no i think you're i i understand your point that like it would have been
decorated differently you you spent you have zero sense memory of being an act in wes's actual
apartment so right the second we see it as asher's apartment you're gonna be like of course
yeah of course i remember that set of course yeah that's not i don't think that happens for
many seasons too well which is interesting we'll see you in a couple years then yeah we'll circle
back on this in a couple years that's right and now a word from our sponsors and we are back
amazing i love that so much in in your defense i was reflecting today watching that watching
this scene i was like does connor have an apartment and i have no memory i have no memory
at all so i completely get where you're coming from like i but does he have we seen it yet i
remember the colliver apartment yeah but like i don't think we ever established because connor's
constantly going to oliver's apartment i don't think it would have been cost effective for them
to build connor's apartment because remember guys everything is money so like it makes sense that
they would have reused wes's apartment if they could exactly yeah as they did with uh rebecca's
apartment also yeah totally yeah okay we go from that really cute scene to a less cute scene where
annalise is drinking vodka alone um slowed down by visuals is playing this is this is like
quintessential faux tech i think where you know faux tech just did a great job of finding these
great like mid-2000s very vibey alt electric dark dream pop you know and they they would
layer under off often these like solo scenes of annalise going through some sort of like
introspection or you know psychological duress duress yeah i just love this it like it picks up
you know we go outside she's like standing in front of nate's car at his house again
not standing in the middle of the street yeah yeah surely yeah and nate is pissed because nate
has been fired right yeah which of all things for police to get fired for this is potentially
the least believable um but you know that's all right he gets fired because he thinks that
annalise told his boss that he was investigating sam but we know as the audience it was bonnie
and nate is so upset that he he sort of like throws it back at her that he also lied and sam
actually his alibi didn't check out and he did he did in fact drive back to philly the night that
lila was killed which is good this is just good stuff this is like you know it's just creating a
lot of tension and it's it kind of like opens the world back up where it's like okay now she can't
trust nate now she can't trust sam you know it's it's building out um and bonnie and bonnie yeah
exactly so it's sort of building out this idea that annalise really is an island and she she
doesn't actually have many allies or confidants she has people that like fear her generally
totally yeah yeah totally which is what happens when when that is your start of leadership yeah
yep so we poppy pop back to the woods frank is calling laurel michaela wants her to pick up to
strengthen their alibi there's this whole we're just getting more relationship building context
yeah yeah where frank's frank and laurel seem very involved and we don't know why yet
yeah also connor says and i'm grab this phrase i think is no longer in the lexicon but he says
uh the guys whipped as in like pussy whipped remember how common that was like at that time
i feel like that kind of phrasing which is very kind of sexist i see you searching your mind for
it but that was like a i think especially in like pop culture that was like a yeah an idea of like
oh but i just i haven't heard that in so long honestly yeah yeah for sure yeah i'm like wow
that yeah that was a thing um yeah we poppy pop back to legal aid where laurel and khan are
discussing the case their relationship looks cute then we go to bonnie and annalise annalise
confronts bonnie says that she knows like really just puts bonnie in her place and yeah and has
this great like you know accusation of you weren't you weren't doing this to protect me you were
doing it to protect my husband so thirsty to find out what the context is with bonnie and sam too
because it's just i have no memory just getting little little breadcrumbs little yeah little
droplets of of moisture i think they're maybe i think she maybe loves him but i don't know why
or yeah did they cheat no idea at least knows of i feel like that she wouldn't be working
for annalee still if that was okay i don't know i don't know but it's a great like annalee's fear
uh eliciting fear in the people around her because bonnie is terrified in this moment yeah um we're
back in court there are so many cops like there are so many cops in this scene that that was the
wall of blue it was something i think in all court scenes were just to make it look like
you know like lively and engaging they would fill these courtrooms but it just really it really
jumped out at me that there's like 35 police officers i was like maybe you guys should be
doing i don't know anything else this is in overtime by the way yeah and connor is on humper
i believe the humper grinder equivalent on the show and he seems to just be swiping for no reason
and we go from there to we're back in the we're back in ak's house the keating five are becoming
friends they they keep saying out loud that they're not friends but they clearly are becoming
friends which is very cute yeah and from there laurel's asking frank to help i think and just
just this idea that like laurel likes that for once they are defending someone who seems like
a good person and she wants to do well and it's it's sort of you know it's just illustrating like
laurel's moral compass and that hopefully these people are still at this point in their lives like
good people with like the correct moral compass and they want to do totally the right thing you
know yeah and then we get a little we get a little humper notification the lumberjack connor's juror
has messaged him on humper and that he exposes that the lumberjack has said that all cop killers
deserve to die and you know connor has this sexting pays offline and yeah we we check that
So he gets, he gets excused obviously as a juror and they bring in a new juror and Laurel's got this like, you know, scorecard that she's been keeping track on. And we're at, we're at, we're at nine jurors, but you know, we're getting closer, but we do not have the full support of the jury.
Yeah.
And then we go from there to Sharon, Ryan's mom, played by Amy Peets. She's on the stand giving a really lovely, very moving testimony about the abuse that she suffered and how her son saved her life.
And it seems like really compelling testimony, but then the prosecution, you know, pokes
some holes in it, suggesting that her life was not immediately threatened and had her
son not killed her husband, would she be dead right now?
No, probably not.
And then we're back to the woods.
We're back in Griffith Park.
We are back in P-22, the mountain lion's backyard.
That's right.
Always wanted to see while we were filming.
R.I.P.
R.I.P.
Legend.
I'm sweating because it's hot.
guys it's summer in la and you're wearing winter gear winter gear we props has not yet invented my
ice vest but that is coming i think in season two or three michaela's looking for her stupid ring
she does a great job of having an emotional breakdown here yeah also a question is the
thing that's upsetting about the ring i thought for a long time the thing was most upsetting is
that it's potentially like evidence that can lead back to her yeah but okay okay okay because okay
for some reason one of the lines that were said made me think that oh maybe is it just about you
know her the fact that she hurt you know she values her wedding connor has a line where he's
like maybe you're gonna have to call the wedding off or something and i think it's just connor
being like incendiary where like yeah our live like even just like bringing attention to like
oh like you think you're aiden's gonna want to marry you now that you're you're a fucking murderer
right right you know is my i i feel like you were like channeling heath ledger as the joker
sure i'll take it enjoyed that choice which by the way i remember seeing online that like someone
was saying that maybe it was based on tom waits like they were like there's a link to this
interview where he really talks kind of like that and does the yeah it's really interesting anyway
it could just be fucking ai please kill me but uh anyway i'm gonna watch i'm gonna watch that
that's that's up my alley see if i can find it algorithm please send that to me thank you so
much a listening algorithm that's right yeah so michaela needs to go return the uh the trophy to
asher's to asher's place and she seems incapable of doing that so laurel nominates herself totally
um yeah then we go back to court annalise is making her closing argument so is the prosecution
this is intercut back and back back and forth um laurel still thinks we only have nine jurors
which is still not enough so we see laurel at legal aid doing work con suggests they grab a beer
you can notice here this is a really good opportunity to see that there are labels
that the prop department made that would go over the brand on any laptop or an electronic that
we're using you will never see a brand by accident on a tv show yeah if you see a brand the show is
probably getting paid by that that yeah so you can see i think she like has a moment where she's
on this laptop and it's just shown really clearly that there's like this logo that they've made
that's a fictitious something yeah i do wonder how much shows get paid for something like that
i'm sure we could probably google it and find out but yeah um when it when the brand is shown
yeah i think that they get paid well it must be worth the while yeah yeah laurel is in the court
hallway she decides that she's going to take things into her own hands and she she leaves
some information for a juror to find on a bench frank sees her do this goes to tell annalise but
he doesn't tell annalise that it's laurel and annalise in a little twist says you know what
inform the da that the jury's been tampered with so we go to court the judge you know questions
the jury the woman comes forward and says that someone told her about jury nullification and
there's a mistrial which is good for us yay mistrial we go out into the hallway where frank
is just like like looking at laurel and and bonnie has this great like she like clears her throat or
something i think and frank's like what and she goes bitch please yeah she's just great
i love seeing why as i get these like comedy lines because she's so good at them
Mm hmm. Yeah. Anyway, the kids getting off with community service and probation,
Asher's crying, which I thought was very cute. We see a little bit of his humility.
Totally his vulnerability. Yeah. And generally it's just like we all did a good thing, I think.
Yeah. And as an audience member, both times I watched it in prep for the episode, I cried a
little bit. But yeah, I do love, I feel like this was an unscripted, one of the unscripted moments
where, you know, it was scripted Asher cries and then Michaela calls him out or whatever. But then,
you know you can see him reacting to his vulnerability in this very like traditionally
like masculine way where it's like you know like if a man is like vulnerable and and then feels
like overexposed or or he's been too vulnerable to try to compensate for it yeah um which he does
like makes that look you know um i really really enjoyed it yeah yeah i was just trying to think
if i've done that but i don't think i think i just cry all the time so yeah i like to think
that you're do you cry a lot i do cry a lot yeah mostly well i'm trying to think about these days
but generally i tend to think i cry more positive sort of positive things oh like even like this
episode seeing the you know our the positive end to the trial is like a positive feeling like of
relief yeah you know and there's like a little bit of like tears in that but yeah i cry mostly i
think like i cry mostly i think to like tv and film stuff generally yeah for sure yeah cool hell
i like crying on planes like like watching a movie on a plane i like crying yeah it's like a really
nice container for me to cry in yeah yeah i feel but it's also kind of the same taste like the
flight attendants will come by and be like you okay yeah wearing a mask it's it's hard sometimes
like on the plane crying because i'm trying not to let it like get in my mask you're like mess up
the seal so i have to like that's fair you know yeah i'm like yeah like even the play i saw
yesterday i was crying a little bit and quickly wiping my tears yeah yeah not because i was afraid
of them of course no you've never been afraid of a tear in your life never never um okay great so
crying generally good good job asher all right we go to annalise on the stairs in her house
i literally wrote down i fucking love the wallpaper and stained glass in this house which
comes back later which is so funny because they they clearly linger on it for a second very
intentionally. Yeah. Right. Annalise confronts Sam, asks if he was in fact at Yale when Lila
was murdered. He confesses that he came back, but he didn't, he didn't kill her. I'm sorry I
slept with her. I'm sorry I lied about it, but I didn't kill her. And Annalise has sort of ambushed
him and said that Rebecca is on her way and that Sam is going to give her sort of a phony psych
eval to see if rebecca recognizes sam if lila has told rebecca about this person that she was
sleeping with sam keating yeah so sam evaluates rebecca annalise is watching on a hidden camera
highly unethical um yeah highly unethical not great no not great annalise um we get this like
this great line where where rebecca says that lila called him uh mr darcy because he wanted
to sound smart and interesting which is like now the performative male like i love that lalo is
being a performative male in this right 2014 right okay uh so it appears that rebecca maybe
suspects sam of being mr darcy but like we don't really know there's some like some juicy looks
that we we hold on a little bit sam gets defensive in a way that yeah he does get a little defensive
wild and careless i guess yeah yeah makes it makes you i don't know makes me a question about
like the like the carelessness the sort of the um in the moment need to respond react punish i
don't know to me at least that felt like revealing of his character too in a different way yeah i
agree rebecca leaves after using the restroom upstairs um and then annalee says you know
despite her despite rebecca not recognizing sam all she knows is that he's a liar and he's gonna
sleep on the couch yeah um from there we go laurel goes to frank's apartment it's night x she looks
kind of dirty from being in the woods yeah and very dirty he doesn't mention anything about it
which i thought was interesting it's dark i guess maybe it's sure just trying to think of like a
lover came to my apartment door and was just like covered in dirt i'd be like hey are you okay
yeah but anyway uh she she brings the trophy out and and we don't know what she's going to ask of
him but like clearly she's going to involve him in somehow some way yeah and then we go back to
present day and laurel is mad at frank because frank didn't tell annalise that it was her idea
right also and then i mean this probably has said before but laurel went to brown which
having just done listened to our episode with pete yeah is reminds me that that's where pete
went to school yeah that's right pete noah is our father um they make out after like a heated
exchange that the tension uh leads to a little makeout sesh and then you know she said it's
it's very fun but she says she has a boyfriend immediately goes to legal aid and has sex with
right just re-channeling the energy yeah re-channeling and then then we go back to
wes and rebecca and asher's future apartment building and uh wes has found that rebecca
has cleared out and he calls her she's on the street somewhere and she basically is like did
you know did you know they were in on it together you can't trust annalise the wallpaper look at the
wallpaper look at the wallpaper yeah and you know boom we caught you know what this incredible shot
of like annalise coming out of her bathroom in her nightgown and it like pans over it does like
an orbital i think it was like maybe a steadicam where we like turn and and we see west standing
there with his hood up looking at the the wallpaper and he turns to her and has this you
lied to me the wallpaper the picture on lila's phone it was taken here your husband's mr darcy
and the way he delivers that is so good yeah so good yeah um but it's sort of a mic drop finisher
like like the episode before like it is a great great great cliffhanger yeah well it's also it's
great by the way is obviously we would be forgetting a lot about these episodes anyway
the amount of time between when we acted in the show and read the scripts to now is so large that
like i do feel like in many ways we are there's so much that we don't remember so we get to kind
we get that like fresh experience from it you know oh yeah for sure yeah yeah and like i don't know
there's something you said about like if if you acted in the scene and shot it like i obviously
you have a feeling about it but like these these scenes that like realistically i just we read once
at the table read and then i never saw it and you haven't seen it for a decade and so yeah it's and
you don't think much about it because it has very little bearing on your character exactly right
yeah yeah yeah so yeah it's it's really it really hits in a really cool way yeah yeah i like this
episode a lot yeah i thought it was great yeah it was really cool it's just yeah i'm excited there's
so much building and and i think episode is the next episode the sixth episode yeah that's that's
and that's kind of quote unquote asher's where we get to see more of asher's life too so i probably
knew that that was coming exciting by the point of this episode it's funny my mom still remembers
the name of the episode uh it's called like freaking whack-a-mole which makes me think
that's probably an asher line it's gotta be it's also just like it sounds like asher freaking
you know yeah yeah exactly yeah but i probably knew that was coming by the time we were filming
this episode which i was excited about too because you know i mean six episodes is small
the amount of 90 episodes that we did and also you know i think i was maybe the last of like
the keating five where you got to really see more of his like life and world right because um yeah
i guess that's true you don't think so no no no yeah that's true yeah so i think at this point
it was mostly like one-liners and i was like god i really hope i get to do something and i sure did
i don't i don't remember that's true you have nothing i don't remember anything about your
episode i like you could put a gun to my head right now and i would not be able to tell you
a single thing yeah a single thing that asher does in your episode like you could say i don't
know you could go to do karaoke you could go to a lower rank like i have no idea i did all those
things yeah i'm curious as you see it if i don't know if your memories jog a little bit from
reading it or the table reads but maybe not like when the table like when we did as actors
like when we did the table read 10 years ago you mean yeah maybe not maybe not that's good
i think there's one thing that i that i think that you will have to remember actually i don't
even know if that happened on the next episode never mind fuck me we can cut all this yeah
no we have to leave it no let's leave it um okay i think i think this is a good wrapping point i
am excited for asher's episode freaking whack-a-mole which he definitely says definitely
probably also yeah the case of the week is it hits close to home when the team defends a man
from the projects who was sentenced to death years ago by asher's father judge william millstone
okay gotcha so there's there's some stuff coming in i can't wait yeah there's some real stuff
my father's played by john posey who's great did a great job great guy to work with wonderful
yeah yeah no okay let's do we are going to do a little bit of listener mailbox we're in a we're
in a we need theme music for just the listener mailbox yeah exactly and so these questions are
from our email that you can email if you look in the show notes you can email us questions
and we and they're you know they might be right here and then i'm i am too involved on reddit at
this point and i'm in too deep and you can ask me questions there that i will also i'll answer
there but also read some of them here i'm imagining an animated version of us like going
out of a house to like a mailbox like a physical mailbox to take out the mail for reading this part
that's why it had its own theme yeah no i i knew exactly what you meant you did yeah you did i knew
exactly that it was like a yeah yeah us like walking down and like right right right like
sort of mr rogers style or something i like it blues clues yeah okay um the how do you murder
how how we got away with murder email inbox there's the same question from both jamie
and katherine separate emails about how the flash forward reveal scenes were filmed did you a film
the reveal scenes all at once like an episode and then they were cut into each episode of the season
or B, film them only as sections during each episode?
Yes.
So the answer is B, really.
Like, right?
I mean, we talked about it a bit
at the beginning of this episode,
but, you know, we would film as much,
whatever you saw in an episode,
that's what we film.
And then if you see a continuation of a scene,
they would take whatever we'd already shot
and then add additional footage to it.
I'm trying to think of,
I don't think we ever went back and changed things that we shot.
I'm sure it must have happened once or twice.
Yeah.
But I can't think of anything off the top of my head.
I'm curious if we'll encounter that.
But for the most part, you know, like we see in today's episode,
we've already seen Laurel getting the phone call from Frank.
And then, boom, we're in a new section of the scene,
which was filmed, you know, a week later, two weeks later.
In the same spot, in Griffith Park, probably,
or a similar enough spot that they can make it look like the same spot.
But yeah, that was the tricky thing about filming those scenes
is that you would play a scene one way
and then they would all of a sudden add things to that scene
that changed maybe even the meaning of the scene.
Right. What you thought you were playing, the context of it.
Yes, the context. Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Because sometimes we did go before, you know,
we would film things before scenes that we've already filmed, you know,
chronologically in the night X.
Right.
you know so it obviously changes how you would play a scene if like the scene before you were
chopping up a body with a crowbar totally if you're putting little parts of that body in
individual grocery store bags walking around as opposed to one large i like that i was laughing
so hard at that and it very well could be revealed that that's actually what we did i don't remember
but i'm pretty sure they're in trash bags right we've definitely i think we've had a moment at
least where we were so sure about something and it was wrong i mean at least the fact that i live
and you know lived in west's apartment at some point that's at least one thing yeah but totally
yeah all right and then we have oh i like this question from c fuck on reddit which quality
or qualities do you admire about your character i do like that i appreciate asher's playfulness
and silliness and kind of a desire to find joy in life i mean it's you know it's mixed especially
early on with other things that I don't particularly like, you know, um, and his sense
of humor is like very problematic and crude. Um, but those qualities are not inherently
obviously problematic. And I think that when I am my best version of self, I feel like I have
those qualities too. Like I'm very goofy and silly and kind of free and playing, you know,
a lot. Totally. Yeah. I like that. I also admire Asher's silliness. Well, thank you. Um, I would
I would say I admire, uh, Connor's confidence. I think it's, you know, I think it often borderlines
on arrogance, but I think that he, he does have like, like whatever his mantras are in the morning
are very strong. Like he truly believes in his ability when he steps out the door. And I admire
that I can use some more of that in my, my life probably, but you know, it gets him into trouble
sometimes and it hurts other people sometimes. So, you know, it's not all peaches and cream for
Connor Walsh, as we know, or as we'll find. That's right. Um, just lots of peaches, lots of peaches.
Uh, I think that's it, man. Thanks for the questions guys. Yeah. You can email them to us.
You can hit us up on Reddit or hit me up on Reddit. Yeah. And thank you. I think we'll talk
about this more next time. Cause this is a good stopping point, but like, I just want to talk
more about fratter days and like shooting over, you know? Yeah. I think you did a lot more of
those than I did. I did some of those. Yeah. I think we like next time we have like a little
night x i'll i'll talk a little bit more about it because i think i think people would like to
you know it was just a weird time where we're wearing like onesies and stuff you know in our
in our trailers having like dance parties right this is the stuff that i missed out on yeah sorry
bud yeah no it's okay that's fine you can talk about it it's fine maybe i'll just leave when
you do well you got just you got to sleep that's true i got to rest yeah that's true all right
all right man i think that this is a good stopping point for us and the next episode
next week is going to be our conversation with katie finley nice this is a great one great one
yeah i'm excited they're all excited for everyone yeah and i'm happy to hear that people are really
enjoying the pod yes love that feedback the bubble has been burst but oh yeah now we have it's out a
new bubble yeah a bubble of joy yeah yeah so I guess in that vein if you would please like the
podcast or subscribe to it or leave a comment yeah not just emotionally like it but yeah do more
press the button that likes it that is my confession is that love is an action until I
until I made a podcast yeah I never I never liked or subscribed to a podcast so I just want to
apologize to all my you know what went wrong Amy Poehler you know all the podcasts I've been
calling i'm so sorry that i didn't comment or review yeah i've done that now so yeah and i
would skip the ads when i would listen to them which i've learned you can't means that that
doesn't go towards like the sponsorship listens and and making the money and stuff so it just
really makes me a freeloader then we can't pay james and james does such a good job that's right
james our producer yeah yeah so if you don't leave a review james won't get paid that's right
that's right all right that's where you should go uh yes we see you next week for our conversation
