Episode Date: April 23, 2026

Episode 8, directed by Debbie Allen, began filming the day after the pilot dropped... and 14 million viewers tuned in live to watch the night before! In this episode, Rebecca and Lila's frien...dship gets a cocaine-on-a-rooftop introduction, Lila's pregnancy sends shockwaves through the group, and the case of the week follows a mom accused of murder while sleepwalking, with a twist neither host sees coming. On the podcast, Matt and Jack dive into the parallels between the case and Annalise and Bonnie’s confrontation, how Jack emailed Pete to fact-check a Connor storyline, the almost-slap that didn’t feel quite right, and the sweaters... both actors hated the sweaters. We want to hear from you! Starting point is 00:00:00 hey everyone my name is matt mcclory and i played the character asher millstone on how to get away with murder and i'm jack fallahy and i played connor walsh on that very same tv show and this is the how we got away with murder podcast hey murderers welcome back bonjour bonjour bonjour bonjour no welcome to bonjour no how you doing i'm doing pretty well i'm doing pretty well a little loopy today went to bed very late yeah um same but the viewers have the benefit of my now deep and raspy voice today it's like my ultimate podcast voice is like i feel like a deeper resonance that will last for a couple days yeah it sounds good so you could you should do uh like a a truck ad right now right right trucks made in america the new 5082 4
Starting point is 00:00:59 that's right trample everyone yeah run over everything that's right destroy and conquer your life right male loneliness oh gosh i i have in my calendar and i think this is probably wrong maybe obviously it's wrong because you're here with me today but i have jack's first show in my calendar for today um for your b-way debut oh yeah but you're finishing previews now or is when is your first show where are you at with that we just started previews so our first preview was friday night oh cool and then we had another one we had another one last night and today's our day off. How was that? Really nice. It was it was great to see it with an audience. I sat in the house Friday night for the first preview. And, you know, it just takes it takes a completely
Starting point is 00:01:54 different life once you have the feedback of a live audience. It was nice to like there were there were some really some familiar faces in the crowd. Patrick Adams was there, which was really it was nice to see him i hadn't seen him in a while patch adams patch adams he he just yeah the robin williamson was about him yeah he's he's got a new tv show that he just shot two seasons of back to back before it's aired which i'm excited to see but yeah it was really cool too because there were like there were there was like a high school class that came to see it like their their teacher you know brought them and so they had no relationship to the play which kind of made that it's it's a tragedy but they were kind of you know there's humor in it but they
Starting point is 00:02:40 were laughing at like i don't know i think maybe inappropriate points right right they're like oh my god willie loman is crashing out totally like if you know if you know the scope of the play and like where it's heading like maybe you wouldn't laugh at those points but it but it but it made it feel very um new and exciting you know that they were they were finding humor in different places than maybe normal yeah yeah it was really cool um i'm really proud of the work everyone's done and we open april 10th i think i don't have my dates yet but i'll definitely post them on my instagram and yeah people should come see it yeah and is so you're speaking of the high school students laughing is is nathan lane i mean is he finding comedy in it i would like imagine that
Starting point is 00:03:31 that's just yeah part of it right yeah for sure i mean i think everyone is doing a good job of finding i don't know it's a very grounded production it's also it's i think very naturalistic but you know arthur miller just writes writes humor very well like there are there are just you know, there are just jokes in the play. So I think that leaning into those naturally and then yeah. And Nathan, he's just a, he's such a incredible physical performer as well that even when he's having these like sort of, I think that's all, that's why these young folks were laughing at moments. Cause it's like, it is, it's so like, it wasn't even like laughter. Oh, ha ha. This is funny. It was just like uncomfortable laughter and vulnerable laughter.
Starting point is 00:04:14 And, but it's, I think it's nice whenever you have a crowd that's laughing. Cause that means they're you know they're along for the ride they're engaged yeah absolutely yeah nice but yeah it was good it's it's a it's a very different thing than making a tv show where i got the chance to get up and rehearse the other day and i found myself being like a little defensive getting a note and and i think that was because um we weren't going back to the scenes to to work them they were just like giving me the note and we were moving on and i think that i'm so used to television where like you're given a note and you have to perform the note immediately on camera in perpetuity forever you know and so i had this like weird like knee-jerk fear or anxiety response
Starting point is 00:04:58 where i was like wait no no i need to i need to like apply this right now so that i can do it and like show you that i'm a good actor and they're like no we're just we're just giving you this note you can think about it for a couple days or weeks even like we're going to be doing this for months wow yeah yeah it was a different experience for sure that's wild so different yeah yeah yeah speaking of television today heard of it i have heard of television today we are talking about episode eight of how to get away with murder get away with murder he has a wife oh no yep that seems like a bad thing yeah it's bad it's famously bad right not that having a wife is a bad right but you know sure this episode was directed by debbie allen a big-time part of the
Starting point is 00:05:47 shondaland family hello debbie allen hello hello debbie allen who went on to i think be the producing director of gray's anatomy i don't know if she's still there but she is a cornerstone of the shondaland family and prolific a legend yes legend prolific dancer has a incredible dance program company in in la and it was written by doug stock still it aired on november 13th 2014 and it was filmed in los angeles september 26 was day one of 10 which means the pilot of the show premiered the night before we started filming this episode wow so wow the bubble had been burst the bubble had been burst and we were on set for day one of this episode wow it would have been a friday right and we would have gone to set and filmed the morning after which means
Starting point is 00:06:47 wow we would have the numbers right so just to give context for everyone the big thing in network in broadcast television still to a degree right but now like streaming has changed everything quite a bit. But the big influence on ad dollars that moved the needle as far as what ads you could sell, how much you could sell them for, which then effectively, you know, dictated, can the show stay on the air? And that was the Nielsen ratings, right? And so you would get overnight ratings. The way Nielsen, you know, we don't need to get into the whole thing. But basically, they have like boxes, it's probably different now. But originally, they had like boxes in a sample size of like i don't know 2 000 houses throughout i think the midwest right and they
Starting point is 00:07:35 would just track you know what people are watching and then you had to put m&ms in the jar and guess how many m&ms were in the jar yeah yeah francis nielsen yeah right game and they would they would they would obviously average things out and do a bunch of math and figure out like oh x amount of people are watching how to get away with murder nationally because over these this sample size of 2 000 houses so many people are watching right but it is a guess somewhat right like based on the right you're kind of like they're they're extrapolating right yeah i mean i think guess i think like a mathematician would not like us saying guess because they're not like they're not you know they're not guessing they are using right math that's how many m&ms you got in the
Starting point is 00:08:14 jar right i mean even that game i think you can use math to you know figure it out a bit sure i certainly can't but they so the next day you would get the rating uh the share and the viewers the rating was basically it measured how many people in a demo so 18 to 49 that's like the people that are spending money right that's important for advertisers obviously and then the share was the percentage of how many people are watching how to get with murder versus how many people are just watching tv that night and then viewers is just like the flat number so the big ones that we would look at were rating and viewers and we how to get murder crushed we got yeah we had 14 million viewers which was huge at the time and then we had a rating of 3.8
Starting point is 00:09:04 meaning 3.8 percent of adults with tvs were watching the show that night right for context like every thursday night right like the biggest show on television is like football right but for for a scripted tv show 14 million was crazy it's huge huge yeah like i don't think shows do those numbers anymore i mean maybe maybe like the big chicago shows or long order um but yeah i don't know i i'm not sure right because of streaming right like the ecosystem has gotten so yeah broad that like i don't know how many people are just like sitting down to watch television anymore in that way yeah yeah and i also remember for the night of the premiere then i guess that night before then we would have been at shonda's house right like shonda invited us over to watch
Starting point is 00:10:01 the live am i remembering this correctly the live premiere and it wasn't just how to get the murder but it was also the premiere of tgit thank god it's thursday which yeah i think that's right anatomy followed by scandal followed by how to get the murder so we had a great layup to with coming, you know, off of those two shows for Shondaland lovers and stuff. Yeah, the lead-in is what they would call it, is, you know, the Grey's Anatomy scandal. So it's sort of like this one, two, three punch.
Starting point is 00:10:29 The thing that was abnormal, I think, for our show is that we had more people watch our show than Scandal just for the premiere, which means that people turned on their TVs to watch How to Get Away with Murder at 10 o'clock, which you know is not nothing when people have to get up go to work the next morning totally yeah thank you viola davis thank you viola davis but yeah no i remember i remember leaving set and driving to shonda's for the party which infamously on our elfie episode that that was the party where
Starting point is 00:11:03 i'm i'm fairly certain she offered him the house that we were you know partying in right all right there's a very lovely buffet i remember that and then we watched outdoors like in the backyard yeah um there was like a little a setup and and was this the first i don't know if it was the first time we got to meet kind of a lot of the other shondaland people i think it would have been i think especially well especially grays because grays shot on a different lot than us scandal also shot on at sunset gower so we would run into folks a little bit more frequently but the graze cast we didn't really like interface with you know on a day-to-day level at all yeah so we would just kind of see them as like a nice treat at events like that yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:11:49 like your cousins like you're like third cousins or something yeah exactly yeah you see him at the barbecue okay what's up how you doing yeah that's right how's work cool okay that's right and then of course like you know this is also a indicative of the time but like the, the live number of 14 million was important, but then also we got live plus three and live plus seven. So that was DVR. How many people were watching within the three days out and seven days out. Anyway, point being numbers were important where we, we would show up on the first day filming this episode and people were talking about the numbers. Like I, I actually hold, I won't read it because it's private, but I remember, uh, Pete sending an email and I looked,
Starting point is 00:12:33 i looked at it last night but he sent us an email being like oh my gosh have you guys seen the numbers yeah i remember that email you remember you quoted that email you sent it to me and i remember you're like oh yeah i remember this yeah specifically yeah yeah yeah yeah pivotal and like i don't know also just like having interviewed pete like how crazy that he like writes you know his tv show his baby and then he right goes out to the end of the world and it gets 14 million viewers it's so nuts absolutely nuts and also of course and this means like i don't know to translate for the audience for those who are not actors like you know obviously having a strong start is like part of how you hope to continue to have gainful employment right like it doesn't
Starting point is 00:13:21 necessarily mean guaranteed it but it bodes well for like you know all the expectations going in and and being like i hope that this is going to be a show that's going to you know last long and that we get to continue to have a job and a job that we like with people that we like so it's a strong sign you're like oh shit all right this is i think our hopes are are maybe going to get to come true before you know having the realistic expectations of the industry i think also that came after for me like uh orange is the new black and how to get with murder when i was like oh yeah these are not this is not the normal like this is not yeah i'm always gonna be on a hit tv show exactly truly yeah well i mean it's something i i kind of want to try and figure this
Starting point is 00:14:04 out if we can but like i mean you brought it up in our audition stories early on that like we only like when we got cast it was a 13 episode show but obviously it you know it became a 15 episode show per season so shortly after this this these numbers coming out the abc brass would have would have been like okay it's time we you know we need to order more we we need way more episodes of this show right right and i'm sure there were factors which like we may or may not get into of why it was only 15 and not 22 yeah at some point shortly after this you know coming out and on top of on top of you know it being 14 millions it was well reviewed yeah you know right especially at that time i'm sure they still do but like you know all of these different websites were like giving
Starting point is 00:14:55 which i always thought was funny like a lot of them were giving letter grades on television episodes you know and i thought that was just funny reviewing our show about law school where we're getting letter grades but i remember i remember like trying to check the av club which is a site that i really liked just as a user and getting we we got i think an a or an a minus from av club and i was just like oh we're now we're cooking you know yeah yeah i forgot we went from 13 to 15 too yeah yeah yeah i i actually it's funny i looked back at some like early interviews that came out like a little bit after this because i don't think i was really doing interviews leading up to the show coming out i didn't have a publicist or anything like that right but i saw a
Starting point is 00:15:37 couple where i was like talking about how we were gonna we were supposed to finish i think like before the holiday break in december but then we got more episodes which took us into you know the new year eventually to film right right right you weren't paying thousands of dollars a month yet no yeah yeah we can talk about that not a bad idea also smart to be like let's see how the show does and i know this was your that's really your intention uh but before i spend, you know, a couple thousand dollars a month, you know? Yeah. It's funny. It's funny even doing death of a salesman right now, because like now that previews are happening, people like I'm hearing cast members talk about like, Oh, I wonder if I should like engage my publicist and
Starting point is 00:16:16 like get them, get them working. Right. But yeah, at the time I just like had, I didn't, I mean, I didn't really have the bandwidth for it. Like I think about that a lot and I think it was probably the right move but we'll be right back now back to class the show comes out it's a hit we're on set and pete has sent us this really nice email we we actually sent him we all i don't know whose idea it was but we sent him like a goodie basket just thanking him for being our fearless leader and And then, of course, he had sent this email, which I really appreciated because it like positioned it as like a team effort. You know, it wasn't like Pete taking the credit for writing a hit TV show. It was like, oh, we all did this as a team.
Starting point is 00:17:02 Yeah. Which was cool. Yeah. Very on brand for Pete. Very on brand for Pete. But the vibes are high and we are on set September 26 and we are filming episode eight. All right. Let's jump in.
Starting point is 00:17:14 Log line. Oh, log line. Yes. Oh, should I do log line? Yes, you should. that's your one job that's my one job do your job do your job logline the revelation about lila's pregnancy prompts several different reactions mckayla meets aiden's domineering mother and the case of a real estate agent accused of murdering her children's nanny
Starting point is 00:17:33 proves difficult for the team all right so episode eight he has a wife as a reminder my guess for who said the title is Michaela yeah what's yours it was you Connor oh Connor okay yeah just guessing because Connor because Connor says all of them exactly I figured you know statistically I had a high chance and I thought I don't know maybe one of his um intimate partners perhaps you know or or a case of the week I don't know okay I like that all right well we'll find out Soon. All right. So well done reading the log line. We recap Lila being exhumed, the autopsy. Frank thinks of Laurel all the time. Michaela is getting a prenup. We see Nate approaching Rebecca in like the gas station. And then we also see Bonnie telling Annalise about Lila being pregnant as a result of the second autopsy, which I was thinking about that. And I was like, pretty massive thing to miss in a first autopsy. Yeah, that's true.
Starting point is 00:18:41 Like, like, I don't know much about autopsies, but yeah, I was like, okay, they missed that. Someone got fired. Someone definitely got fired at the morgue. You didn't check if she was pregnant. Okay. A young woman who's been murdered. Crazy. Maybe, maybe not though.
Starting point is 00:18:56 Maybe they don't, I don't know. It seems like an oversight by someone at the morgue, the intern, the poor intern. That's a spinoff series. It is. Yeah. the ramifications yeah butterfly effect okay so we go into the first scene where lila is in the morgue and they're dead and getting an autopsy and it's so gross and i hate it always so gross yeah it's so much like soggy yeah soggy getting stitched up yeah yeah but they do this really cool editing of
Starting point is 00:19:27 like you know her dead face and then it's like fading into her alive face and it is six months earlier and lila and rebecca are hanging out doing cocaine um and they're talking about griffin's penis and they're on a roof they're by the water tower um it's good thing there was no windy night all that cocaine exactly it seems like a crazy place for them to be doing cocaine by sure i mean people famously do cocaine in like closed rooms but right okay right um right and lila is telling rebecca about mr darcy and that she's yeah she's met another guy um and we immediately get the title of the episode from from lila yeah saying he has a wife and we were both wrong we were both super wrong also shout out for you know her getting a title line that's cool yeah before
Starting point is 00:20:26 like most of the Keating Five totally totally anyway we go back to present day and we're like at the cliffhanger we're picking up from the last episode where Bonnie's telling Annalise about the pregnancy Annalise is interrogating Sam about Lila uh she makes I love that she makes Bonnie stay in the room for to have it's so awkward it's so awkward to have a witness yeah in case like sam lies again i mean literally the definition of like also like blurred work and personal relationships is like when your office is in your building and your bedroom is upstairs and yeah yeah you're in the night the nightie yeah yeah it's the yeah the whole situation is not totally above board as far as i'm concerned yeah yeah and then henley says this like really intense line of was lila a virgin
Starting point is 00:21:13 when you first had her you would know wouldn't you like it right yeah it's it's this episode is off to like a pretty like i don't know uncomfortable start i guess i would say yeah just also the you know the revelations that there's the assumption perhaps sam didn't use protection also is like just an additional i feel like layer of betrayal not just in terms of like you know potentially get someone pregnant, but health risks and all that sort of stuff. Oh, sure. Yeah. Like Annalise hasn't gone to the gynecologist or gotten tested or, you know, which you should do if a partner's sleeping with someone else and not using protection and not telling you. I also forgot that she was sleeping with Nate also. Yeah. So Nate's also, and then Nate's wife with cancer
Starting point is 00:22:00 is also. Right. Yeah. Which is really good, especially to see when someone is like immunocompromised. Yeah, exactly. That's right. Yeah. Cool. Okay. So that's great. Great. We're discovering new dark. Great job, everyone. Oh, God. Yeah. So then Annalise. Community care. Yeah. Annalise mutters, you should have worn a condom, which is true, as she leaves the room. And then we get the title card and we're into the classroom. And she's immediately setting up our new case, Gretchen Thomas, played by Stacey Edwards, who is sort of like a suburban woman, mother, and is accused of committing a murder while sleepwalking. And we are in her house. And, you know, it's the Keating Five plus Bonnie and Frank and AK. And, yeah, Gretchen seems a little distracted planning a birthday party. like doesn't seem like she maybe just committed a murder um she's being quite avoidant i would say yeah one would say one would say and annalise is trying to convince her why she needs to take
Starting point is 00:23:07 the stand frank and laurel have this sort of like flirtatious aside about going up and sleeping together in one of the rooms which is which like given the proximity of them i mean they do a good job isolating them in this one shot but given the proximity of them to the rest of the group i'm like wow you're like next to us right right like what right hunters between them actually also like i don't know i mean i'm not like a sex in public places person but like i was like you're gonna go upstairs like i know it's just like a flirtation but like to the client's house yeah in practice i was like you're gonna go upstairs into like i don't know like is this the room where where the nanny used to sleep yeah murdered or you know i don't know i guess it's hot i don't know anyway
Starting point is 00:23:50 but she uh gretchen has this great line if the jury thinks i i should go to prison i agree i should pay for this sin which i don't really agree with but she thinks she did it is the thing yeah yeah and essentially i don't remember this that much but also i think because i the rest of the keating five like all interviewed like different members of the house and stuff like that but i do remember very specifically i have like this pattern recognition around like just design like i remember that the very white kitchen and i remember like talking to debbie allen in there but other than that but you know a lot of times like with these like kind of individual case of the week stories they can kind of become a glaze because you especially if you
Starting point is 00:24:31 don't have any lines again in the background it's kind of like a courtroom scene you're just like i don't really need to prepare for this scene i read it once and i just show up and listen and be present yeah but it's weird to be like oh yeah i forgot about this yeah i didn't remember really anything about this this episode to be frank until we get to a scene with connor which we'll discuss and then i had this like very distinct memory of like an email exchange but it is weird watching the show and like having these splashes of memory or or not in my case i guess with this one yeah okay we're back in annalise's house michaela astutely points out that we do all the work for annalise and she wants to study for exams because we're in law school and law school is
Starting point is 00:25:14 famously hard but asher is not worried because he has the trophy i still don't know what the trophy does that's no one knows no one knows what the trophy does apparently the trophy is so powerful you can use it in different classes exactly you know unless because i'm we have exams for all the classes coming up i think like it's end of the semester yeah it's like uh it's like a powerful like a sorcerer's you know statue essentially that you can use to hypnotize other professors and yeah connor's wearing a super tight purple sweater in this scene which i did not like seeing i have a sweater that i fucking hated wearing so so too that i'll get to later which is really funny in this episode in this episode we both have sweaters we didn't like
Starting point is 00:26:03 it is i mean it sounds funny right but like you like do these fittings and like they're like really quick often and sometimes like you don't necessarily try on everything that like it's put put into play in an episode and then like you go to your trailer you know the morning of whatever you're gonna shoot and you put it on and you're like hmm this is a lot itchier than i remember and then you have to be in it for 12 hours you know and it's yeah as a reminder it's 90 some degrees in la and you're wearing a skin tight like wool sweater right yeah even when you're walking that small distance from walking from the stage to your trailer you're just like oh my god yeah yeah i also like i i remember connor's clothes were tighter than what i wear and i
Starting point is 00:26:51 remember that just like being a constant like source of claustrophobia for me yeah yeah that's sure i remember that yeah and i remember too like thinking about like the gray's anatomy cast and being like man that rocks like they just rock up to to work every day and they get to wear scrubs which are like effectively the jammies and crocs maybe yeah and crocs so tight yeah yeah please sponsor us please sponsor us um yeah so connor's also not worried about exams because he has Adderall which just tracks yeah that does track and then Connor uh recruits Laurel and Wes to form a study group which you know study groups big thing in law school very real um so that was I remember talking to my sister who went to law school about that and yeah I thought it was
Starting point is 00:27:44 interesting that even if these people maybe don't like each other they would form a study group so that they can all do the best that they can on these exams all right we go into the office Annalise is telling Wes that Lila is pregnant um and tells Wes to not tell Rebecca and I'm literally being like why is she telling him this and then he has the line of like why are you telling me this if you don't know which I think is good like murder how to get murder television writing just that like they often do that where they have something that is like perhaps like preposterous which engages you as the viewer and then they like answer the question like immediately right yeah yeah or sometimes you know after commercial break right and then so annalise
Starting point is 00:28:28 basically explains that she's you know she's trying to like regain wes's trust i suppose which i don't even really know why rebecca goes to meet nate uh why why should i trust you there's a lot of trust in this episode so far and i also questioned in watching this scene i was like has rebecca told west that she's like doing these like backdoor meetings with nate and i think right no yeah it's interesting seeing them in unlikely alliance um they're definitely in cahooties here yeah i actually texted katie and was like man i'm really jealous that you got to like do a scene with billy brown right because it was so rare that we that storylines crossed at all totally especially this early in the show where like nate you know billy or you know they're
Starting point is 00:29:28 they're pretty isolated from the rest of the cast like we've seen billy and viola have a lot of scenes together in cars right you know we see nate go on his like fact-finding mission for sam but like a lot of the people he's engaging with were like day players and guest stars and you know it wasn't like series regulars so katie's kind of like the first other person i guess to really get a scene with with her storyline at the very least with nate totally and katie's also pretty far removed from most of us too not as much as as billy was yeah but katie katie at least like our age and like socially was hanging out with us totally yeah yeah you know i just mean in terms of shared scenes i'm like yeah i don't know if asher particularly shared much yeah no no connor
Starting point is 00:30:18 neither i don't think until you know night axe we'll be right back and we're back uh okay so rebecca tells nate that lila was pregnant nate says that uh rebecca should grab some of sam's hair from the house so they can do a dna test yeah i was also curious like where these scenes were shot like these little this little exterior and it made me think that sometimes when we would go and have these like location days where you know like Gretchen's house like we're not going to build that house just for this episode so we would rent you know a real person's house in Los Angeles and we would shoot there for the day and then sometimes we'd like tack on exterior we'd get permits to like shoot on the street or the sidewalk like in front of people's houses so I wonder if
Starting point is 00:31:04 that's the case here or oftentimes we'd shoot on the blocks around the studio lot yeah all right we go back to the roof and rebecca and lila you know it's they're cute they're friends yeah it is kind of cute yeah and it's it's cute but rebecca's also brought cocaine and molly yeah yeah the whole time i'm watching and while it doesn't pay her like there's no money exchanged yeah it's just friendship is the best friendship yeah bad drug dealer yeah it's also essentially there's a moment where lila says like i mean that you know she reveals that they had sex and lila reveals that her and sam had sex not her and rebecca and uh says you know he made me feel safe in terms of like losing virginity and stuff and there's this moment rebecca gives this look
Starting point is 00:31:53 that i almost interpreted as like as her like wondering what it feels like to be able to like feel safety and intimacy oh yeah i'm not sure i'm reading into it i don't know if it was a katie choice or if it was in the script but i just i thought it was an interesting i thought it was a really interesting moment that i just thought was like very telling about the character totally yeah i also think megan uh megan west who plays lila does like really nice work here too yeah totally it is a good these like sort of exposition scenes are hard to do i think but this this felt like very natural to me yeah yeah true i like that i like that though that that uh yeah maybe rebecca hasn't felt safety and and maybe that is what she eventually finds in wes you know
Starting point is 00:32:38 yeah and well oh yeah while they're talking lila gets the the famous dick pic from from sam which then cuts us to rebecca at annalise's house to try and get this hair and sam answers the door and hi mr darcy she's looking for her gloves sam doesn't want her in the house and eventually gets her out of the house and then that takes us to photag picking up which means we're getting the keating five are going to be off doing work and we're getting interviews we're interviewing gretchen's family michaela's interviewing gretchen's mom and her mom kind of like fact checks her because she's like a big fan of court court tv which i thought was really funny this is so good i really this was really funny yeah yeah yeah i think asia's i mean so good in it laurel
Starting point is 00:33:29 interviews the daughter who jokes that maybe the grandma had something to do with it i love we see carla's uh comedic timing peeking out too like for the listeners who may not have seen her other work she's a really great and really funny like comedic actor as well yeah and so I love sometimes we see the dry just like a certain dryness dry humor yeah yeah I mean at the time of us filming this I think she Carla had been in like the highest grossing Spanish speaking comedy of all time right that's right yeah but yeah I think that uh for me especially with my like American lens of entertainment I just had no idea and then she would she would bust out the most like veteran comedic chops you know yeah totally yeah so yeah i couldn't agree more
Starting point is 00:34:15 yeah but it was funny for me watching this for the first time where i think that the show does an effective job where i was like huh like i actually don't know who it is and like i shot it you know what i mean like i filmed this episode and i was like i also did not know i have no idea yeah or just i think it was the mother honestly totally sure yeah i think for me i was like uh like maybe it's the kid which then you know while i'm thinking that takes us to court where cody uh played by max gray wilbur is on the stand and is getting cross-examined by prosecution where we reveal that cody had been sleeping with elka the the nanny who has been murdered i totally forgot about that totally forgot about this but like a very how to get his murder plot
Starting point is 00:34:57 twist and then this would have taken us like right to a commercial break like you can feel the way that it transitions here which which would have definitely been like an uh an act break written into the episode where they would put you know two minutes of commercials and i was just thinking about this where like this would have been like a real tweetable moment you know yeah right right where people are hashtag how to go with murder hashtag tgit omg t-h-e-i-t t-g-i-t t-g-a-w-m-t i forget i always forget our hcg awm right that's right it's seared i had it tattooed onto my brain yeah easier to type than to tend to say a hundred percent yeah so people are tweeting we come back from commercial break and we're in the hallway connor's in trouble because he didn't catch
Starting point is 00:35:51 he had interviewed cody and didn't didn't catch this it made me really question is what does Annalise even do does she do any work at all and she immediately throws Bonnie under the bus and says that Bonnie's one job is to tell Annalise what's coming her way and I'm like I don't know what's your one job Annalise right right right what are you doing right now yeah very harsh way harsh way harsh um we go we go to Annalise's house where Connor isn't worried either about exams because he has a copy of last year's last year's exam a cheater i guess but like also i don't know this feels like something that would like maybe be somewhat available i don't know i don't that's true yeah i have no idea asher has the trophy so i don't know asher has the trophy
Starting point is 00:36:44 he does not give a shit connor has connor has the uh the exam and he's like taking bribes i guess laura's phone rings and frank frank's shirtless torso pops up and i was like that's right in the world and then they have a conversation and frank's like i changed it while you were in the shower meaning like he put he put himself as like his contact info in her phone right right which does track because even from the very beginning when we first see that photo on the night x when she's like hiding in you know in the leaves with everyone and it pops up because you get a phone call it feels a little like wow that feels like you know out of character yes um so yeah it makes and that like you know it would have been tonight like we're getting we're getting to night x which
Starting point is 00:37:28 you know yeah yeah you know this is the day before this is the day of night x right yeah yes is it i think so yeah or like this episode eventually gets to because like presumably this episode, it's like two days or three days. Right. But like the last day of this episode is the morning of, is the day of Night X. I believe you. Yeah, I know. Yeah. I see you trying to do the math. I actually tried to track this a little bit myself while watching. We'll get there at the end, I think. Anyway, Frank booty calls Laurel and they go out and have sex in Frank's car outside of the house and then i really like this this scene where you asher then goes to bonnie uh in the little office area for where we have private conversations to say that bonnie did not deserve
Starting point is 00:38:18 catching that heat yeah yeah that was a nice little moment a seed being planted if you will and here i must talk trash about the sweater and the hell the hell that it put me in um first of all i hated the look of it because it just like it has like basically i'm wearing this button up shirt with a tie and then a sweater over it and the line the lines and the patterning underneath just looks like like occasionally you can see someone on tv show you can see the wire like the sound mic going down the back of their shirt or the front of their shirt and it looks like i just have like 30 wires like sound wires running up and down my shirt and then it was so tight and then when you want to like take it off like the amount of static electricity you're generating
Starting point is 00:39:01 just like charges you up and then and then you can't kind of take it off all the time because your hair it messes up the hair a bit i just feel like i was vacuum sealed in there i really hated it thank god they never put me in that again um and also the the longer you're on the show i feel like the more comfortable you are kind of being like i really rather not wear this something like this again i actually got into trouble not trouble but like i remember later in later seasons when and paulo was doing our wardrobe she was like she was like honey like you need if you like this outfit will you smile on the photo because you you try on tons and tons of different outfits and like they they're taking your photo to then send up to pete and the powers that be to approve
Starting point is 00:39:48 right wardrobe choices and i guess that i just you know had my neutral right nothing expression on yeah uh which we could call a rbf you know sure which they then wrote and pete then wrote into the tv show that that connor has which is art imitating life i think maybe but point being that paulo was like pete thinks you don't like these outfits because you're not smiling and i was like oh no no i do like i love this paul smith suit i right i want to steal this yeah and maybe i did maybe you did okay so asher is asking if he can cut out early for the bonfire pregame yeah see yeah that's right yeah um and then bonnie approaches sam to talk about lila but is interrupted by annalise so uncomfortable so again so uncomfortable my body collapsed in
Starting point is 00:40:46 on itself sam and annalise go into their office they go into their office sam tells Annalise about Rebecca coming Annalise tells tells him that Wes knows about the pregnancy um and then has this like you know this line of like I'm gonna lose my case because all I can think about is you with that girl which is an incredible delivery by Viola yeah but the whole time I'm like I think you're gonna lose your case because like you don't do any work but sure okay sure yeah I liked I really liked this delivery though because it did feel like that Annalise was almost like discovering that on the line you know like i'm gonna lose i'm gonna lose my case because it doesn't feel like a scripted line on a tv show like it feels like something that
Starting point is 00:41:31 annalise is actually coming to herself and saying which is hard to do as an actor yeah also hard to do is i feel like making the word screwing like i don't know screwing is like the network tv for fucking i feel like and i was just thinking i was like oh yeah i hope does such a good job of just you don't think of it it doesn't doesn't seem it doesn't bump at all yeah which is which is yeah you're right very hard to do yeah and then you know she reflects back that this is what happens when you screw someone else's husband you become sad baron her kind of reflecting on her affair with with nate yeah karma karma and sam assures her that it's not her fault it's his fault he's the one that's broken broken them wait reflecting on her affair with nate i didn't think that i
Starting point is 00:42:19 thought it was no because sam doesn't know about that yet it's i think her being like when she met sam sam was married oh yeah you're right you're right yeah yeah yeah you're right yeah okay good good fact check i remembered something um yeah you remember i mean to be fair i there's no shot i was gonna remember that so i'm glad you did we missed the part where sam finds out about nate yeah does he ever find out actually i wonder i don't know i thought i kind of assumed he knew about nate but i guess he doesn't it makes more sense probably cool yeah yeah yeah yeah no he definitely doesn't because nate has been like blackmailing he you know what i mean nate's been like leave me alone or else i'm going to go over and tell your husband every single thing i've done
Starting point is 00:42:59 to you in his house okay that's right i'm glad we've now confirmed 12 years later sam does not know about nate um all right so we cut to rebecca on the roof again and they're sitting on the edge of like the roof which i thought was insane yeah bananas like yeah hate that who like no one's ever just casually just like hung out on the side of a roof like no no right definitely don't do the cocaine there either yeah also don't don't no one should do that that's not safe and lila's crying that sam won't leave annalise and griffin was right bad things happen when you have sex which is not true we don't like sex shaming yeah i think by the way her sitting on the on the edge like in the beginning is supposed to make you feel a little
Starting point is 00:43:43 unsettled too right like i got that impression like uh what the fuck she's crying sitting near the edge yeah i totally get that to me though like it once we're in this scene it was just so distracting where i was just like this seems like almost too casual right like i i completely get where like Lila is not doing well let's insinuate that like you know she's living life on the edge and maybe whatever and then for time it would have taken more time for them to move her to a different spot on the roof and then reset up so that's for the audience's view they might have just been like no we're just going to keep just keep the scene here yeah the cameras are set up yeah very well could be true also this is a really good example of like getting your money's worth on
Starting point is 00:44:26 a set where they built this like this is it's not a real roof this is a set piece on a studio stage and we've seen it now three scenes in this episode that's right so they're really trying to get um their money's worth and all three of those scenes these three scenes would have been shot probably in the same day just back same day yeah and they built the entire city of philadelphia all around it yeah exactly yeah which took three years um yeah yeah totally took three years and it looks pretty good looks pretty good we go back to present day where rebecca calls nate to suggest that you know she couldn't get the she couldn't get his hair but why don't we get sam's phone for evidence of his knowledge of the baby and the pregnancy and thus establish his motive for
Starting point is 00:45:17 killing Lila and then we go to Connor who goes to see Cody to see how he's doing and then Connor tells this story of when he was 14 and his and his sister's friend was 18 this was like the scene that I watched and I was like oh I remember emailing Pete about this and asking I was like is there any truth to this story like is there a kernel of truth did like and then and then it sort of opened up you know the genie out of the bottle for me where i was like oh like i should actually know this like has connor had any sort of intimacy with with women you know yeah um and that's when i learned about from pete the golden gay which is you know someone that has never had sex with a member of the opposite sex and so pete was like no no no connor's a golden gay
Starting point is 00:46:11 this is completely fictitious this story yeah you did a really good job with this because i was wondering i was like oh does connor buy like i was like was that a thing and then yeah revealed that you weren't but well done so connor doesn't get what he needs because the kid calls him out for being gay goes back to the keating five and says that all i came up with was a flaming penis which is my favorite line of the episode and you have this great delivery asking you if it's like a gay euphemism, which I thought was really well done. Right. Thank you. And then Connor explains, no, Elka, the, the, the nanny gave Cody an STI, which, Hey, maybe this entire episode is like a sexual health PSA because Sam wasn't wearing condoms either. True. And it's trichomoniasis
Starting point is 00:47:01 and michaela recognizes this and has this line i majored pre-med in undergrad i still remember everything and i vividly yeah vividly remember us losing our minds at this line yeah yeah just could not keep it we could not do the scene without breaking it's hilarious it's such an absurd line it it's hilarious and then and then it's also one of those things where i feel like there were the times where asia would we would like laugh about something about michaela like this and she would like kind of defend it almost half as like asia and half as michaela you know like you'd be like yeah she has a great memory yeah yeah you know yeah i mean you know for context like we myself and elfie i think especially like we immediately pointed out just the absurdity
Starting point is 00:47:51 that that someone would say that they majored in you know pre-med and remembered everything from right from their their studies i mean even for michaela like that's a crazy thing to say but you're totally right that like asia being like the the dedicated artist that she is was just like no this makes sense for michaela and i'm gonna make it work and we made fun of her quite a lot i think for exactly yeah did you did you catch me my reaction in the background when she says that during yeah yeah yeah no i watched you sent me the clip the wide eyes and i watched it it's it's like this brought me a lot of joy like watching this on screen i like was transported back to that moment of us just like all you know keeled over in stitches because we're running yeah
Starting point is 00:48:36 a running a running joke yeah and you're right like we called back to it for like episodes and episodes where it's like oh michaela remembers everything like why can't she remember this she remembered everything about pre-med like surely she would remember where her wedding ring is you know and i feel like asia would try to justify it and she it was so funny i remember oh my god yeah it's also a good example of like i don't know just like reading it in the room and then us like taking it on set and like us just finding like little things funny and then like how how much it changes you know on the course of the set yeah you know because it's like it's like not even it's not that absurd of a line it's just we found it really funny for some reason
Starting point is 00:49:18 right like made it an inside joke right i think also the way she delivers it too it's not like I remember everything like it's kind of like, you know, just like a throwaway, but like a fact. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Yeah. So Michaela's found the antibiotic that treats the STI. We cut to court. Viola, Viola, Annalise is questioning the father, Matthew Thomas, played by David Burke, and exposes that he was also sleeping with Elka.
Starting point is 00:49:45 we basically learn through a series of like uh mounting intensity questions that the dad staged the entire thing and you know had given his wife wine so that she would be even like further into her sleepwalk paralysis and yeah basically like implicated her in the entire thing which is horrific but yeah i really like these scenes where she just like goes where annalise goes on the offensive and it's like this escalating monologue you know yeah definitely goosebumps yeah during all that sort of stuff yeah that reveal and yeah and i i kind of had the thought where i was just like wow like you're destroying this family like me like this isn't what they hired you to do i know like immediately as i'm having that thought gretchen comes up and says
Starting point is 00:50:33 essentially that like i hired you to defend me not destroy my family and annaleigh says you'll thank me one day and the whole time i was like will she i don't know maybe yeah actually season six episode two she calls and she's like by the way thank you for destroying my family she gets a she sends a note yeah an edible arrangement from from gretchen yeah that's right we go to the exterior of the house uh michaela wants the trophy annalise responds i don't care who has the trophy which is so funny it's so funny because i'm like i don't think i do either like yeah you know what i mean like we've just talked about this trophy and like i don't know anyway she goes inside the house and mckayla's mother-in-law is there mary walker played by lynn whitfield
Starting point is 00:51:16 so awkward this part is incredible to watch yep yeah incredibly awkward miss walker and mckayla go to a fancy dinner and mckayla just tries to cut to the chase that she obviously knows this is about the prenup i this scene for me like i'm not i'm not fully i don't like it it feels a little you know Michaela basically says I'm not marrying Aiden for his money I'm marrying him because I love him and you know like this comes on the heels of Mrs. Walker explaining how her and her husband built up this like multinational company from nothing it just feels a little uncharacteristic of Michaela from what we know about her at this point like she you know in previous episodes with Aiden even even in like his bisexuality coming out she said like oh no
Starting point is 00:52:06 I have this whole plan. Like I have this 10 year plan or whatever it is. And this isn't part of it. Like it, we've seen Michaela be so pragmatic and like a prenup, a prenup is not that crazy of a thing, especially for a family like this, that is worth, you know, a fortune. And if, and if Michaela is trying to get from point A to point B, it just seems to me like she just signed the prenup yeah yeah it bought it just bumped a little bit for me i feel like it i think with the new revelations actually that come like in this scene to me it actually makes sense right because i think so much of like when we reveal a little bit more where michaela comes from like it makes sense that so much of perhaps like and maybe this is my own interpretation of like her pursuit of
Starting point is 00:52:56 perfection in these different ways is like also a response to some shame that she has about like where she grew up and stuff right yeah yeah mrs walker basically says if she doesn't sign it then i'll make sure and she you know uses the phrase like a backwoods swamp you know you'll go back to your backwoods swamp and and michaela yeah winds up to slap her and she goes to slap her and mrs walker catches her hand she's the terminator yeah she's literally the terminator which i don't know if you remember this but like asia originally scripted mckayla was supposed to slap mrs walker and you know asia reached out to pete to talk to him about it and was like if i do this she has to slap me back and knock me out like i think that would be
Starting point is 00:53:45 more realistic and pete i guess then came up with this compromise of like she catches the slap so which is cool i think it also like asserts this like power dynamic and like the generational power dynamic too between the two women yeah yeah why do i feel like there were bloopers also like in our in our bloopers we watched with this i don't know if it was in my mind and i'm just creating the trying to trying to picture these i mean it looks it ends up looking great on camera i remember reading and being like that seems like it's gonna be really hard to sell right um but it looks great on camera and i don't know for some reason i imagine a blooper it could just have been like a dream or a figment of my imagination
Starting point is 00:54:24 yeah of them like missing the slap or missing the connection yeah i can see that yeah i don't know this one bumped for me a little bit i there was there was like a twisted part of me that i was like if we're gonna go into like this narrative of them being really bad people like i almost would rather mckayla blackmail be like your son's bisexual or gay you know like there was there was a part of me that was just wanting to see mckayla be ruthless i think for some reason and this felt like it felt a little bit on her back foot but i i think your your analysis holds up as well yeah we have to see her we have to see her shaken yeah we do need to see her shaken and then miss walker has this banger line of like at least i know is right about you now which i think obviously
Starting point is 00:55:06 creates the transformational arc for michaela i think right all right so we cut to laurel and frank making out they seem to they seem to always be rushing through sex yeah um like take some time guys a little foreplay i don't know you know and then uh sasha walks in who's sasha oh didn't remember this did you remember i know no i didn't and i was so upset frank has a girlfriend right played by katie cleary and she does not seem surprised that frank is fooling around with someone and yeah basically references laurel as the the student of the month right i don't remember what happens here like yeah me neither in regards to her but i was very shocked and i was like frank yeah frank not great so we cut to bonnie and sam they're on the exterior of annalise's house
Starting point is 00:56:01 she she bonnie's been trying to talk to sam all episode yeah and this is finally that coming to ahead where she she says that she met Lila the night that she was killed which is a great opener to this conversation and we immediately flash back to August where so you know the month before where Lila comes to the door sobbing saying she needs to talk to Annalise and you know clearly she's going to expose the affair and maybe even the pregnancy and Bonnie kind of like goes into like guard dog protective mode of Annalise in the house and says you know if she doesn't leave she's gonna call 9-1-1 and uh Lila has this this line he can't keep it secret anymore right which takes us back to present day and Bonnie piecing together that like Sam knew that that Lila was
Starting point is 00:56:52 pregnant yeah Liza does a great job when in when she like snaps into that protective mode I think it's the first time too where we like really see Bonnie be like like we've seen her be kind of like tough with like the students but like this is like the most extreme version of that which is which is cool yeah so sam immediately goes into like master manipulator mode and you know stroking her cheek saying how much is it devastating yeah i hated this like absolute piece of shit and then he kisses her i was screaming i screamed when he kissed her i was like dude like really uncomfortable awful awful stuff i also don't remember this at all i don't like i mean tom verica does an incredible job because he's the nicest guy on the planet i mean
Starting point is 00:57:41 he is despicable in this scene yeah yeah and also right before i mean it's also like right because right before they kiss i'm like oh what is their fucking history like we i want to know what it is and then we see that and i'm just like oh no the betrayal of course we get more context from from bonnie's side yeah in a moment um but i remember just being like the betrayal yeah we then cut which is an interesting cut like because we've had we have sam and bonnie having this conversation like the confrontation and the kiss and then we immediately go to bonnie crying telling annalise that she knew that sam knew which i just thought was an interesting time jump a bit totally yeah and she anyway bonnie literally gets on her knees crying at annalise's
Starting point is 00:58:27 feet saying he knew that he she was pregnant he kissed me he kissed me so i'd lie to you and says he's not a good man annalise i mean it's terrific terrific acting from liza yeah a scene like this is just like so hard to approach yeah totally yeah and then we see annalise fire yeah you're fired leave bonnie and don't come back yeah yeah which coming back to my point from earlier oh here it is right here it is get ready everyone pattern recognition so basically what we're seeing in this scene is annalise finding out about her husband's betrayal and then taking it out on bonnie which in the case of the week is what happened when annalise pointed out the husband was cheating on the wife and also murdered the nanny and then the wife was angry at
Starting point is 00:59:18 annalise instead of her husband oh yeah and she was like and you'll thank me later but you were seeing the same sort of like projection right where it's like the person who's actually doing right so the harm is not the one so yeah in this pattern scenario bonnie should be leaving the room saying you'll thank me later right no well yeah i think so i mean i guess it depends not necessarily i see what you're saying i understand what you're saying but i think i mean bonnie's the one that revealed it of course but just the fact that annalise has become aware of the betrayal in this situation that is what it's not perfect no no no i like it and i think i no no it's it's Very astute of you.
Starting point is 01:00:02 Thank you. That's perfect. Yeah, it's perfect. And no, I know, but I kind of do, like, I'm being facetious, but I do think that like Bonnie, I think Annalise will thank Bonnie later. Right. I think. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:14 I hope. My, my big takeaway, I didn't have the pattern recognition that like you had, but like my takeaway from this scene was like, just like, I was just kind of doing a quick check-in for myself where I was like, what do these people get from Annalise? Like. Right. which of course we then get you know we're gonna get that but like at this point in the story I'm like Annalise is terrible to to them and yeah like I don't know why she wants to keep working for
Starting point is 01:00:40 in this horrific toxic house yeah the toxic dynamics are are very real and we talk about that all the way throughout the show yeah exactly like I remember Ashery on season six being like like we're in a cult or something like that you know yeah for sure which is i mean not wrong yeah all right so we cut to nate giving rebecca a flash drive to plug into sam's computer and just as she's getting out of the car west bikes up and sees her and he is pissed off which confirmed for me i was like yeah he doesn't know um she's been meeting nate behind his back west they're in they're in the um in their apartment in west's apartment and west thinks nate is a for annalise which you know that's that's a fair thing to assume that like her boyfriend
Starting point is 01:01:27 cop is is not does not have good intentions sure and then connor's at the door hey oh hey um and does not have a great uh entry line into this scene saying you should have told me you lived uh in the ghetto yeah yeah which i think this is a sign of that hopefully white people know generally that's not you know a word that we want to use yeah not great yeah really not great and then annalise and then rebecca i have not gotten a single name right this entire episode rebecca leaves and connor try trying to like get close to wes i think says has this like bitches be crazy line also not you know the best but it's like foreshadowing this like friendship that is going to blossom i think between wes and connor which is i i like i don't know i didn't
Starting point is 01:02:19 like really think about it that much while we were making it but like a lot of the people on reddit like the community has asked a lot about this like oh like how did you and elfie feel like in this like blossoming friendship between the two of you and i unfortunately found out i think that there's a lot of like fan fiction about wesson oh really oh wow which yeah i'm gonna i'm gonna safely stay away from um but yeah and the bike i guess it makes sense yeah and the bike yeah it's a tricycle that's right that's right and then we and then we see asher dancing and practicing hip thrusting by himself yeah which is kind of sad when you think about it like i you know he's just asher's i mean obviously they're all very busy studying and stuff they don't have
Starting point is 01:03:01 a lot of friends outside of their group but he's like seemingly like often alone and i mean i don't think he's i think there's some deep buried part of him that like is a little is a bit insecure hear about it like even we see this in an earlier Night X thing when he's talking to some woman on the phone and she says she wants to come over and he's like wait really yeah I just I imagine like Asher and Wes like don't have anyone other than the people we see on screen like Laurel and Michaela and Connor I kind of like see them like off like with other people and friends maybe in the world but like for some reason Asher and Wes I'm like nah they just have the characters that we know but i feel like i see west like that's his choice whereas i feel like asher wants to be
Starting point is 01:03:47 like surrounded probably by people you know yeah i mean as he's having he's having a pregame party yeah he's doing his pregame no one's there no one's mckayla comments and uh of course i was like oh she's she's stealing the trophy which we've which we've established in right uh previous episodes asher asher has this great which i think you delivered perfectly where he's like well i I think people aren't here yet because like everyone knows the bonfire is going all night. So, you know, it's like, he like truly believes that though. I think like, he's like, people are going to come to my party. The layers of like construction of his mind to like protect the ego.
Starting point is 01:04:26 You know what I mean? The fact that he like does, he's not even like really suspicious that Michaela is there. Yeah. And then he has this, yeah, the, the, this line, which I thought was like almost threw me out of my seat about the bonfire only being canceled twice right one of which was for the flu pandemic which you know the and the very end of filming the show i think it was like a couple months later when covid yeah or something like that yeah just the throwaway line of like yeah there was some flu pandemic yeah totally which is crazy and the other the other being pearl harbor and i was like right okay that's really
Starting point is 01:05:00 wild asher also speaking of racist microaggressions uh asher speaking a lot in aave very cringe yeah but that's what it was that's what it was yeah um laurel then joins at west's apartment i completely forgot why we're all there but it's the study group that we spoke about at the beginning of the episode and west realizes that what like the flash drive is gone and that rebecca's then missing and he turns to connor did you bring your car right which sets us up for night x right and And then Annalise, we cut to Annalise. She's on the staircase and she is calling the DA's office and demanding that they collect samples from all the men in her life.
Starting point is 01:05:47 That's right. In Lila's life, including her teachers. And she's, of course, saying this to Sam, who's in front of her. And that's the end of the episode. Damn. Damn. Yeah. It's not my favorite episode thus far.
Starting point is 01:06:03 Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. I think that like, I think it's a really part of me like almost wishes like we had gotten some of these Rebecca and Lila scenes earlier. Like it feels it feels like a really I don't think it's a failing of anyone in particular. But like, it just feels like a heavy lift to be like, Oh, we need to get all of their backstory and see their entire friendship in one episode. And like, who knows, like, maybe that was like actor availability. like we we don't know why that happened or maybe they didn't even know that this is the direction they were going to go in you know there's so many variables but for me i was just like dang i kind of wish that this had been like sprinkled throughout to better understand too because you know katie has these like beautiful in previous episodes of being like she she was my
Starting point is 01:06:51 friend like lila was my friend and i yeah there i it made me because the scenes were so cute I kind of wanted like more of them and spread out a little bit so that we like understood their relationship and who Lila is or was. Yeah, it felt like a lot of a lot of information to get us into Night X. But that being said, it's also like, this is the episode that is teeing us up for the midseason finale, right? So like, you know, next episode is going to be a banger. is that the next episode yeah episode nine yeah would be our season finale yeah oh my god trying to remember what the what the thing is i don't know what the uh what the cliffhanger is after that do you remember what the cliffhanger is at the end of nine yeah i don't know i have
Starting point is 01:07:47 no idea gone to my head i could not tell you it's good i mean i could go to my head i could Sam was innocent. Yeah. Sam was framed. Sam's a virgin actually. Yeah. Sam's a virgin. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, yeah, I, I enjoyed it. Yeah. It was, yeah, it was interesting. I think, I feel like I remember this time too, we were kind of a little bit, we weren't sure if the cases of the weeks were going to be like ever present. Like if that was just going to be like an ongoing thing or not. And I feel like at this time we're probably starting to see the pattern of like okay this is seeming to happen more often than not which uh for our sitting in the back of the courtroom scenes you know i had mixed feelings about that totally yeah fair yeah but they land
Starting point is 01:08:34 more i think these things also like the court the case of the week stuff lands more watching it than like when we read it back in the day because you read it back in the day again if you're not having any lines in it you're not investing that much in the preparation for it and i think so much of the show is the directing and editing where you're they're piecing together that like the way that they weave together the classroom the interpersonal conflict of the Keating Five and the court the case of the week is is really what makes the episodes compelling right and yeah yeah I maybe that's part of it maybe like this case the week didn't like hit for me in the same way or like maybe yeah it's hard to do consistently like yeah and knock it out of the park i mean that's just
Starting point is 01:09:19 not realistic you know and for whatever reason this one to me was just like a little but yeah there they had to fit a lot in in anticipation of the mid-season finale right the amount of just sheer plot points and like information that is conveyed including even in short scenes like just like the scene with frank and laurel making out and then the girlfriend is there is probably like a half a page maybe like on the script you know but to do and also to do without making it seem overpacked which i don't think it does is also really impressive you know we need to guess next episode episode nine the mid-season finale of season one the title is kill me kill me kill me what what is your guess i mean i feel like i'm guessing i almost want to guess connor
Starting point is 01:10:08 just because i feel like that's something like you would say in real life sure yeah kill me kill me kill me you know please kill me kill me please kill me that's the best you're gonna guess connor again yeah i guess every time now yeah hey cool i'm gonna guess sam yeah oh which is obviously say you're wrong but it's funny it is but i'm remembering other parts of the next episode now yeah okay forgotten oh my god i mean sam dies next episode like i know i forgot that he's dead also because it's been so long since we've seen him dead we should talk about this at some point but like i remember the i guess it would have been like when the mid-season finale was airing but like i mean it's worth bringing up now but i remember because i was on reddit so much i think
Starting point is 01:10:58 it was on reddit it might have been on twitter but i remember someone you know there were all these like theories about what happened right yeah and i remember someone leaking exactly what happens really yeah because we like and we'll talk about this at the top of of recapping episode nine but i think that on i think maybe on this episode too but definitely on nine we had like very intense script protocols. I don't think we were even getting full scripts. I think we were getting like sections of scripts because so many people get the scripts and, you know, they were just trying to safeguard against, you know, a full copy of a script getting released. And I remember we were super anxious about it. Like we were, or I was, I was like very anxious about who I said
Starting point is 01:11:48 things too about like what i was doing at work and we weren't even allowed to throw our new script pages away for when we'd get like updated scripts we would have to turn it back correct yeah and it would and it would go in that i think it would go on like a large like garbage one of those garbage boxes it's like for shredding like that have like you can like slide something in but not take it out i remember that we had to sign them back in before yeah oh my god i forgot about that wow they made the bonfire yeah they just had an ongoing fire that we had to throw pages into that's right no no yeah you're right though we like couldn't we weren't allowed to throw sides out like like i don't even know if they gave out sides like when we were filming certain scenes
Starting point is 01:12:27 they might not have honestly but i remember reading on reddit i think someone i don't know who someone went and like said this is exactly like x y and z happens and that's how sam dies and i was like oh boy oh my god but it just never got traction because it was like there were so many theories being thrown around you know right right yeah what a time what a time wow all right cool well tune in next week for episode nine for another episode kill me kill me kill me kill me oh god please kill me now please kill me now thanks for listening because people are listening as always you can you're welcome email us at how we got away with murder at gmail.com and we may or may not read your question on the air
