How We Got Away with Murder - 109: Kill Me, Kill Me, Kill Me

Episode Date: April 30, 2026

Episode 9 is the midseason finale, the moment the flashforward finally collides with the present. Everything that happened on Night X is revealed: Rebecca breaks into the house to prove Sam k...illed Lila (subtlety be damned), Sam is confirmed as a literal strangler, and Michaela sends him over the railing… which is how he dies. Until he doesn’t. Connor gets fully backhanded across the room, fake blood is everywhere, and by the end, we finally learn what the trophy is actually for. We think. Matt and Jack break down how sets pull off fake blood and forced perspective, how Jack had to throw up as Connor (and the one time it actually happened as himself on set), and how these kids never got the memo that you don’t return to a crime scene. Plus, a few Lord of the Rings detours, Frank finally breaks up with his girlfriend, and the episode closes on the reveal that Wes and Annalise have been in cahoots. Still slaps. We want to hear from you! Starting point is 00:00:00 hey everyone my name is matt mccorry and i played the character asher millstone on how to get away with murder and i'm jack fallahy and i played connor walsh on that very same tv show and this is the how we got away with murder podcast hey brother howdy howdy howdy howdy howdy ho how are you how how are you i'm good i'm good it's a beautiful day in new york uh as you know it's like 70 degrees we've had a brutal winter easter's coming up and and friend of the pod jim lindsey who was my stand-in for all six seasons of high youth murder is visiting his family on the east coast so he came to brooklyn and brought me an easter basket wow that's sweet really sweet i love that what's in it all sorts of stuff i mean lots of chocolates he there's a chocolate in the
Starting point is 00:01:00 shape of a wrench because he has bought me a lot of tools over the years and we've done a lot of uh home reno projects together right which is cool i think i'm gonna do like an unboxing of the easter basket for for social media perhaps i like that i dig that he sort of suggested i do it So it was kind of like a strong, maybe you should, maybe you unwrap this on Instagram. I was like, yes, sir. Continually directing me as he did on set. That's right. Much, much to my pleasure because I needed all of the help I could get.
Starting point is 00:01:35 Yeah. He's very supportive. That's right. How are you doing? I'm a little sleep deprived for some reason. Oh, Lord. Some of the, the ongoing gifts of long COVID. i'm going to announce my melatonin dose which i feel like is not something i should be proud of
Starting point is 00:01:52 but i think is probably there's a guinness book world record maybe i don't recommend any people do it at home i'm wearing a guinness hat so this is appropriate this is true actually yeah please sponsor us this is in addition to other sleep supplements and the sleep medication i tonight i will be going up to 90 milligrams of melatonin and if most people don't know usually it's like one milligram five milligrams i started at one and then every couple weeks basically i'd have to go up a couple and this is where i'm at so i'm gonna work on weaning off soon but i have a have a little instant matcha little packet matcha um coursing through my bloodstream right now so i'm starting to feel a little bit less um brain damaged brain inflamed but yeah i'm okay yeah
Starting point is 00:02:37 I'm excited to go into the warmth later too. Haven't been outdoors yet. The warmth. Oh, the outside. Okay. Yeah. I thought you meant the warmth of this episode. That too.
Starting point is 00:02:48 That too. Also, we had a really funny conversation right before we hit record where we got the suggestion that you're maybe being too affirming on the podcast. That's right. That's right. You're so good at affirmations and conversation that it is to the detriment of people being able to listen clearly. it's too it's too confusing this actually when i'm working with clients that i'm coaching
Starting point is 00:03:11 sometimes i'll mute for the sirens and stuff but i can't help myself when they're talking i'll like unmute it for a second just be like uh-huh and then mute it again sometimes like it's okay you don't have to do that it feels like i'm leaving someone hanging you know what i mean i don't think we talked about active listening like as a culture until like 2014 or 15 right yeah i think that's true i think it's like like i don't think it was a thing like i i think it's just like it appeared one day and then i was like oh like i think you maybe taught you told me you said the words active listening for the first time and i was like what's that and then i and then i didn't apply it in my life for another seven years you know i understand the distraction
Starting point is 00:03:55 anxiety is distracting you know what i mean like and the things we do like on our phone i feel like you know, uh, I don't feel this way anymore, but I feel like I remember at times we were talking and you know, the phone would be kind of sucking you in, you know? Oh, for sure. Um, yeah. Yeah. No, that's still, that's still a problem that I have. I'm good. I actually bought the brick on your recommendation. I've, I've reduced my screen time, I think like 40% in the last eight months. So I'm, I'm proud of that, but I, yeah, it's something I need to work on. What I've also noticed is that quitting nicotine has really helped with my attention in general interesting and in conversation my i got dinner with my cousin a week ago or two weeks ago and she basically she
Starting point is 00:04:45 was like oh my god you like you seem less psycho now which was like her nice way of saying that i was more present right which is cool you know nicotine patches is one potential experimental treatment for like long COVID stuff. So maybe you go off nicotine and I'm going to go on at some point, perhaps. Dude, I can't recommend nicotine enough. Nicotine rocks. I mean, not great for me with my anxiety, but if, please don't sponsor us, please don't sponsor us, but maybe, um, yeah, I'm really into like the, the, the neuro, like the biohackery stuff. I, I, I'm, I'm interested to learn more about how it's being used to treat long COVID. Let me know if you start that, that treatment plan and i i can suggest all of the nicotine products great i love it and live
Starting point is 00:05:30 vicariously through you perfect um okay we have a big one today we are we are recapping a biggin a big one season one episode nine kill me kill me kill me which aired on november 20th 2014 it was written by Michael Foley and Erica Green Swafford it was directed by Stephen Williams and we filmed it in Los Angeles the first day of filming was October 8th 2014 this is the mid-season finale yeah by the way I just I just every time I hear and read kill me kill me kill me I think about you because I feel like I've heard you say that so many times you know what i mean saying kill me on set is like yeah it's my favorite it's how you regulate yeah it is literally how i regulate yeah kill me please kill me please kill me yeah please kill me oh my
Starting point is 00:06:26 god please kill me so every time i see it i'm like is this a quote from jack um but it's not it's the name of this episode it would be funny if in us guessing also we've gotten confirmation from the reddit community that they do like us guessing the titular nice lines it would be funny if the kill me kill me kill me was just me me on set like bts yeah exactly but wait did we did we actually guess this one yeah we well we have your guess is connor which would make sense that you would you'd associate it with me that's true that's true and then my guess was sam as a joke kill me kill me i remember that yeah we did have two weeks between this episode to be fair so longer time passed long story short i would have remembered otherwise potentially
Starting point is 00:07:14 Well, I mean, this is just to show people how bad my memory is. I've already forgotten this episode because I watched it two weeks ago. So with that being said, let's dive back in. Why don't you wait, before we get into the logline, we should talk about midseason finale where right, our show was a little unique where we would have a fall break. yeah where this episode the mid-season finale would be you know where our show caught up to night x and everything became present day right it was always i think episode nine yep it's it's like a little break in the tv schedule generally just because like the holidays are coming up and people are like not i guess in front of television sets as often i think i mean again this is all kind of antiquated because most people don't watch television this way anymore but for our show in particular it would also bake in this couple weeks where the writers would continue working and they would basically be trying to get further ahead in the season because at this point you know
Starting point is 00:08:20 we're like you know we've caught up right yeah with storyline i mean so they're they're now basically taking like a two-week writer's uh chunk of time where they get to they get to keep going with the story did we generally take that time off tween as the actors and stuff in production yeah in the fall yeah yeah i think so i think we would have like a break oh i think so how long i think we would have like a two-week break oh two weeks okay maybe i i was like that but that's not how long that's not how long the break in airing it was no okay no no no we would come back and start filming again okay okay before before but you know we would take a two-week break so this is you know we start day one on october 8th we would
Starting point is 00:09:15 finish this episode let's say like october 20th or something like that and then we would take a two-week break into into November right and then we'd have some days off for Thanksgiving and then we would film like the first like week and a half two weeks of December and then the holiday break would happen so we we would get like another I think episode or two or episode and a half in the calendar year before going on our big long okay right I thought I thought you were saying we had like months off and I completely forgotten that which would have been very scary yeah I have no recollection I mean unsurprisingly I have no recollection of like what I would do with these two weeks off probably nothing probably stay in LA and just like I don't know
Starting point is 00:09:59 do nothing do you like did you go places like maybe I went camping I don't know yeah that makes it feels like not quite long enough to really you know I remember at this time in my life being like a little upset that it wasn't it was like right after Burning Man and this was a time in my life where I like was interested in going to burn like now I would never on my life you couldn't pay me to go to burning but at that time like i had friends that were like burners from new york and like i was like oh man if our mid-season finale lined up i could be in you know on the playa right whatever right sand in my butt crack exactly yeah but instead i was like i don't know doing other things okay though that's that's mid-season finales we just explained
Starting point is 00:10:44 our schedule riveting stuff why don't we get into the log line i'm gonna do it the flash forward finally syncs with the present and the events that transpired on the night of sam's death are revealed which has severe consequences for all involved this is a crazy log line this is wild well all the log lines are usually like super intense and this one's like things are meeting right plot lines are converging. Is this, is this, I like the triple F as well. The flash forward finally sinks. Yeah. The flash forward finally. Yeah. Yeah. I can't even say that. Okay. Let's get into it. So we recap with Michaela will not sign the prenup. Mrs. Walker catches the slap. We get all of that again. Um, Michaela goes over to Asher's to steal the trophy. Laurel
Starting point is 00:11:33 meets Frank's girlfriend, Nate and Rebecca's alliances forming. Lila was pregnant. Nate gives rebecca a flash drive bonnie and sam you know the kiss bonnie gets fired by ak annalise you know is on the stairs at the end of the that episode demanding dna samples from all the men in lila's life including her teachers i mean literally it is showing us all of these plot lines from the the entire season thus far just to remind viewers like this is this is the state of play yeah it's a lot yeah it's a lot a lot of things there's a lot of things going on yeah and then we are we are in night x but it is present day and the first thing that really like jumped off to me is that like the color palette like you know it is we've been seeing this sort of this different lighting
Starting point is 00:12:22 package used to depict night x and now like the entire episode is in this color scheme which is cool so annalise is packing a suitcase her and sam are fighting we're like tracking through the house on a steadicam which just as a reminder is like a rig that a person wears yeah and walks with yeah a harness it must have been a steadicam just based on these these camera moves yeah and so they're like going in between the rooms and like just a lot of really cool moves and so who i i would like to look back and see who our steadicam op was that day because they they make it look Yeah. Seamless. Those things are heavy. Like it's hard to move. Yeah. Yeah. They're really heavy. Yeah, totally. This seems crazy though. It's explosive. Sam's all, you know, don't give up
Starting point is 00:13:09 on me, which is crazy. And anyways, I already have, um, Sam throws the phone against the wall, which to me, I mean, it's, I think great sprinkling in like the violence, right? Yeah, totally. Yeah. It seems so specific, like throwing the phone on the wall that I, for a second as a first time audience member i was like oh i wonder if this comes back later where someone needs the phone right it's also it was like a landline wasn't it right yeah right right which is interesting and very time specific but definitely moments like these yeah that make me that made me think like i feel like sam says he says literally he says in the scene i'm not a violent man yeah and then he's is violent yeah and i was like i feel like uh this is getting a
Starting point is 00:13:57 little maybe human to human violence supposed to human to phone violence you know he grabs her in one of the other episodes puts his hand over her mouth and then even the way he was defensive and angry with rebecca in his fake evaluation surveillance of her yeah yeah i don't and i remember this point i didn't entirely remember if you got violent but i yeah i don't know you can see the fear on annalise's face like when he throws the phone you know totally yeah and that's going to build like we're going to see i think that violence pretty quickly right we'll be right back and we're back from there we cut to uh an exterior call it's connor connor laurel and west are driving through the students right they're in connor's car mowing them down and it's yeah
Starting point is 00:14:45 it's the it's the bonfire night. And there's a lot in the episode in this car. So I phoned a friend, Jim Lindsay, and he reminded me that this was poor man's process. So poor man's process is when you set up a car like on a rig, you know, it would have just been on the studio lot. And like there, there are literally people like holding the big lights, and the lights are passing to make it look like cars like some people are you know grips or daffers are on the rig like moving it to make it like simulate as if a car is driving yeah which is always so weird to me just the feeling of like you know just people are shaking it and it's like quiet you know what i mean it just feels very strange and this was also it was green screen probably right yeah it would
Starting point is 00:15:35 have been i think yeah because i feel like in recent years they now use like these big led these screens yeah that's right for the audience they use those for full sets now right yeah like the mandalorian was shot with like yeah yeah yeah yeah with those wraparound screens wow i find it you know basically yeah for the audience it's basically like you're in like a giant there's giant walls that are just showing like the cars other cars passing by or the the street and all that sort of stuff i find it distracting when i watch that though these days like for some reason i feel like i can always tell oh interesting and it's also i don't know why but i'm so aware of like actors that's like a hard thing to do well because basically there's two things that are
Starting point is 00:16:28 hard to simulate is when you're if you're talking to someone next to you in the car the ability to like understand like when you're actually driving how long you talk to someone like looking ahead versus kind of looking to the side is hard to time like i was watching a show last night that i won't name but i was like this guy's this guy would be dead this car yeah he's just looking for too long right um and then the other thing that's basically like impossible to simulate is how your eyes track things like you know in a car and like you're not just generally staring straight ahead you're kind of the eyes are moving and stuff like that so yeah i think car acting like lands in that camp of where we also put phone acting where i
Starting point is 00:17:07 think it's really it's it's everyday behavior that is so hard to do convincingly yeah yeah i'm really curious too how that evolves in like the next 10 years with just like autonomous driving you know right well we are we just gonna have those scenes now where there is unbroken eye contact because the car is driving itself right you know right i miss the days of a giant rig on a car that's obviously a lot more expensive for production because you're shutting down whole like city blocks and things like that yeah yeah totally but film obviously still do that with the budgets where they'll they'll literally pull yeah they'll pull the car right yeah i was looking back in cataloging some of our our like throwback photos for this podcast and i was finding photos
Starting point is 00:17:49 from me moving to la and one of the photos i found is me and jake weary uh who people know from the waterfront and animal kingdom but he and i met in 2013 doing a movie together escape from polygamy with hayley lou richardson and we shot this exterior uh there he you know it's it's an adaptation of romeo and juliet i was playing romeo he was playing mercutio and he lives in vegas and we went to go shoot exteriors in vegas and it's him and i driving around the strip and like definitely i think you're just like maybe allowed to shoot in vegas or i don't know if we were shooting illegally without permits right but they literally just put the camera rig on the hood of this car and had us drive around doing a scene like smoking him smoking cigarettes and
Starting point is 00:18:43 you know whipping down the strip and i remember at the time being like this is crazy right this is so dangerous. It's 4am. Right. You know, like, we were 22 years old. And there's just like a walkie talkie and the beverage holder being like, take a right, take a right, take a right. Yeah, anyway, all the car scenes you see in this episode are very, very controlled where we are literally stationary on a lot. And there just weren't really people around at all. Anyway, I couldn't remember that it's like the bonfire night. Right? That's what's happening. that's what's happening Rebecca isn't picking up her phone Wes is you know crashing out Connor starts pressing Wes on why he even thinks Rebecca's there because we don't know why we're driving to
Starting point is 00:19:29 AK's house and eventually Wes breaks and says you know Sam Sam killed Lila yeah and Rebecca is going over there to prove it we we like cut to Laurel's like shocked face and intercut uh back to Annalise and Sam fighting they're throwing insults at one I mean it's just like really gnarly like they're their whole marriage is coming apart yeah i don't know it would take so much couples therapy to fix this if they're even assuming it was just an affair and there wasn't like a dead dead person and unborn you know child right yeah and a violent and a violent man and a violent man yeah yeah and then annalise throws that i've been sleeping with another man yeah i was i i forgot that she says that and i was like oh shit yep and then we cut right back to connor's car connor doesn't
Starting point is 00:20:19 understand why west thinks that sam killed lila he doesn't buy that west blackmailed annalise i can kind of see myself starting to try and like build up to connor crashing out later in the episode and i don't think it works that well like i think it would have like i i can see this scene like i'm trying to play it like a little manically and i don't think it needed that i think it makes total sense for this to just be grounded in like what the fuck are you talking about say i'm killed lila you know like i like your sprinkles yeah but i appreciate it but i i just think i think the emotion i go too far emotionally when it's just like not necessary yet like we kill someone right like that that that's enough of a turn for someone to lose their marbles yeah i
Starting point is 00:21:08 hear that i guess i can also understand the the impulse because you were shooting stuff where you were you've gone full out into sort of losing your grip and you're trying to bridge that gap right and you don't want to right you don't want to under bridge it you know i feel like you can always like take it back but you don't want to be like from one scene to the next like oh hello yes i've been driving this car and you're like no i'm the joker now yeah exactly yeah yeah anyway we go back to Annalise and she is saying his name is Nate. He knows me just what I like and how I like it. He knows how to make me scream and groan and sweat, which is sexy and a lot. And yeah, she keeps going and is, you know, she's clearly trying to get a reaction from Sam and it, it
Starting point is 00:21:53 comes. He, he pins her against the wall by her throat saying he, he thinks of Lila when they have sex and annalise gets real dark and says that you know sam probably got off on strangling lila to death and she's yelling like go ahead kill me and and he like almost breaks out of it and then calls what's like this really incredible performance from from tom yeah he does amazing work here amazing work where he calls her a monster and then has this you know you're nothing but a piece of ass i knew you'd put out dirty rough sex and and says some other words that i won't i don't feel comfortable saying but it's just demented and dark and and scary i mean it's just even seeing him with his hands around her neck knowing also that lila died from strangulation i
Starting point is 00:22:42 mean it does make you think like yeah well interesting this is this guy's like mode of choice and and then not to spoil things but we also see him strangle someone else later in this episode yeah strangle guy basically um is his nickname to me now yeah the strangler yeah but yeah the shit that he says is so vile yeah and again a really delightful man doing a great job of playing a terrible human being here for real like what a and it's so funny like having again like having never watched it and just like my only interactions with him on set were up until like up until this episode were just me lying next to him as he's dead you know and just having like casual conversations with tom verica the actor and just being like man what a sweetheart right
Starting point is 00:23:33 and now watching this and being like wow he can play a monster well um just great actor yeah anyway annalise has the at least we're able to finally tell the truth before she sort of walks off and she gets in the car and bounces and as as the car pulls out this is a very classic how to get murder reveal where one person's leaving a scene and it and it reveals someone else entering or having been present in the scene and we see rebecca in the driveway holding the flash drive yeah that moment seeing rebecca made it all click for me and i was like for what happens to sam it just all came kind of flooding back it was like it kind of there's a nebulous space in my mind yeah you know what's crazy is that up and i still watching it did not remember really at this point i'm like
Starting point is 00:24:24 i still don't remember what happened like this had it had not been triggered yet for me so that's i'm glad to hear that this was the click for you yeah not all of it not all of it but just like some specific like shots of it so we hit the title card that was all that was all pre-title card which is crazy yeah so then we have from the title card which i loved we get the how do you how to get away with murder and we have sam drinking at the kitchen island and the word murder from the title card is dissolving right over him which i just thought was beautiful composition like i thought like that was a clever bit of editing yeah yeah i even in this part yeah His acting is really good. And I don't know, I was looking at him and wondering if he believes in all the things he said to Annalise, or it looks like there's some remorse there, but maybe it's just remorse about saying it out loud as opposed to what he did feel and not having said it, you know?
Starting point is 00:25:27 yeah i feel like the fact that we probably don't ever see him redeemed tells me that it probably was true or at least somewhat true yeah yeah that's a good take yeah i also like that they kind of gave him they gave like tom verica some like solo screen time that they typically reserve for annalise because they're like well we're about to kill him so like let's give him some acting yeah just give him some life yeah anyway michaela then walks into the house holding the trophy like a dork finally figure out what the trophy is for it's to get out of an exam yeah right i guess yeah sure so she she sits she sits on the couch and says she's gonna wait for annalise and sees and see this part sent like i like laughed out loud where she sees rebecca walking up the stairs
Starting point is 00:26:17 yeah just like rebecca doing a really bad job of breaking and entering like just entering through the front door like not a great cat burglar and sam thinks that they're there together and then rebecca i think stupidly says call call you know rebecca could have just sat down with with michaela and i don't know but she says call wes and sprints up the stairs which is yeah it's one way to get this done yeah i guess i imagine that moment the shock of being discovered and you're like trying to decide in your mind and like she already had her hand on the on the railing like she's about to like go up the stairs that you'd be like i don't think i just need to go where i'm going she's the only character that asks to use the bathroom upstairs and that has
Starting point is 00:27:05 used the bathroom multiple times so you know she could have been like oh i'm breaking and entering so like pp i think the bump for me is like we establish in like the first interview scene with with sam and rebecca how incredible of a liar she is right like she's a really she because she sees the wallpaper and immediately makes like the darcy connection right and doesn't i don't know like she's not like a nervous wreck leaving the house do you know what i mean yeah i do think i mean this is getting highly specific and technical but we have a podcast for re-watching the show now don't we that's the point yeah i do feel like it's a different energy to like try and decide like i'm imagining if i discovered something in a moment and like tried to like keep my face
Starting point is 00:27:50 neutral i feel like i could do that better than like anticipating that i'm going to do one thing that i'm not supposed to do being caught and then trying to decide in that moment to sort of fork off in one direction or the other feels like a different sort of brain okay yeah we'll allow it great Michaela calls Wes Connor has this great I'd pay to see her face right now
Starting point is 00:28:15 then Michaela's like narrating that Sam's pounding on the door she's doing like a pretty terrible job at communicating like what's happening I don't know I had a weird moment watching this where I was like do we think in 2026
Starting point is 00:28:31 she would just she'd put Wes on FaceTime or something i don't know i don't like it feels i don't know there feels like a i don't know what it is about it i it just maybe because like phone calls feel weird even now to a degree i don't know like there was something in the scene where i was like i don't think that this is how the scene would be shot in present day interesting maybe maybe it would be a face i mean the camera's worse it was like super grainy back then that's what i mean like you know but now it's like she could just she could just facetime right keating three in the car right from the bottom of the stairs
Starting point is 00:29:08 you can zoom and be like this is exact yeah and be like this is exactly what's happening i don't need to like be the intermediary right right describe what's going on yeah you know she did a great job here and the tension like the way the tension builds is like super juicy and exciting here we'll be right back now back to class okay so then we're seeing rebecca she has the computer in the bathroom and is stealing data west and the gang show up this is the moment by the way in watching it that i remembered that this is the mid-season finale and that we even had mid-season finales that's right yeah sure yeah at this point i'm like oh like i at this point i'm like oh i remember being upstairs like i remember the upstairs element of of this right i don't really
Starting point is 00:30:00 remember sort of like the scooby-doo of it all like us like coming in as a group but i do remember us all looking over the banister which is about to happen so wait sorry question in all the stuff we usually do the downstairs do those stairs where we shoot that lead to what we saw upstairs is the whole is the whole upstairs room actually upstairs there or is it a different a different place like on the studio oh shit i now that you're bringing it up i'm second guessing i almost my my knee jerk was like it's definitely not there but yeah i feel like it can't be it's not it's not there right because then yeah you'd have to build the intricacy of building like a second story like it's actually there as opposed to like dummy stairs that go up and then kind of stop
Starting point is 00:30:49 yeah so for for context for listeners like if you're if you're seeing a set of stairs on a stage they would you'd be they'd be functional like you could go up to the stairs and maybe there'd be like the hallway and like maybe some doors but like entering one of those doors on the on screen in a tv show that would actually be shot like on the ground floor where they've built that room separately from the stairs yeah i think that has to be the case yeah because because so much of annalise's bedroom there's so many scenes in annalise's bedroom yeah right so that would have just been a separate set that we didn't shoot on that often but like viola was on all the time for like the wig scene and all the bedroom scenes television magic yeah television
Starting point is 00:31:34 magic so we definitely were running up and down those stairs and having the banister moment at those stairs but then when we were inside that was on i don't i don't even think it was on stage 14 i think it was on a different stage i'm not sure though we can we can figure that out everyone shows up sam sort of calms down west tries to get rebecca to come out of the bathroom i don't understand why she won't put the flash drive in her pocket or yeah i had the same question i'm like is this a tragic example of women not having pockets enough and and we're seeing we're seeing what happens as a result of that but also like rebecca's like this like cool all i was like rebecca would like throw that in their bra or their anywhere like they just holding
Starting point is 00:32:17 it is is very tv i think which is which is fine but yeah and i don't know she then comes out and i guess like sees i guess he sees the flash drive right because he tackles rebecca and wes yeah i don't know what his plan would have been if the flash i've hadn't just like fallen out of her hand there you just like start rooting around in her pockets or i don't or maybe strength maybe the strangle guy you know strangle guy yeah also yeah i think that there were like a lot of options obviously we wouldn't get to where we get to so this needed to happen but there were definitely options for him before escalating to tackling them well he could just be like give me the flash drive yeah you're stealing property from my house
Starting point is 00:33:05 you're i guess although if you want to get it then you probably want to and you don't want people to like have a warning right because if he said that and they knew it wasn't going to happen then like connor could also come in and the other people could plan so he's trying to get the surprise element yeah yeah he's she's trying to do it the good old sneak attack that's right the old oopsie daisy oopsie daisy sneak attack so he tackles them connor tries to help and gets just gets backhanded and i don't i i actually don't remember filming this at all which i think is funny he's superhuman strength he's like thanos just like slapping you across the room yeah i get slapped like another dimension which is so tight yeah yeah connor backflips off off the fucking
Starting point is 00:33:51 yeah i go down the stairs he ends up on the couch downstairs just bounces yeah yeah she's like a dead fish like bounces off the couch back up the stairs rolls up that would be like the anime version of this this fight where like people are getting like shot through walls that's right someone should make that fan edit if you have the capabilities um so then laurel grabs the flash from sam's hand uh she books it out of the room he runs towards laurel mckayla sort of pushes him like to like like kind of out of just like instinctually like like reflex she uses like aikido master technique basically and just redirects energy yeah yeah exactly very anime
Starting point is 00:34:38 and he goes over the railing and then he hits his head and he dies yeah and then uh i do this is very clear in my mind i remember us like really getting this shot because again it's like this is what we're leading up to this is the mid-season finale like they're spending a lot of time on these sequences yeah and i remember that i i remember them doing like the choreography of us running to look over the stair staircase banister and we had to do it a bunch of different ways and like people coming at a different like they wanted options you know and they i guess decide on this one where like i come up after after getting thanos slapped i come up and sort of squeeze gonna be like what's up right today i mean a number of things like the fact that michaela
Starting point is 00:35:28 does that is wild and it also makes it make more sense why she's so like broken down in all the parts you know what i mean that she's the one that did that but but i mean it's just it's so interesting how well it sort of cohesively comes together because obviously asia did not know that when she was like playing that right like and i'm sure it had some description of that she's totally broken or whatever but it just it comes together even though the actors didn't have that much information at different points and then that begs the question like did pete and the writers write toward that direction because because asia was giving such a great intense performance on all the night x scenes did they then decide oh maybe michaela should be the one that pushes
Starting point is 00:36:13 sam over the railing right yeah i don't know before he bounces off the couch and comes back up the stairs and was there like a stunt person who who did like they have like a wire that like put him down this yeah yeah it was just tom verica just yeah just just jumped down the fucking stairs for 12 takes yeah exactly and then went to go direct an episode of scandal that's right and produced bridgerton and didn't complain once yeah that's right and i was like my coffee's kind of cold i'm upset oh my god he's like i love philadelphia throw me down the stairs one more time that's right that's a pretty good impression actually yeah oh man that jawline um no they had yeah they had they had a stunt person that was on a wire so like the wire the wire like helps
Starting point is 00:37:05 slow down the fall obviously but like they are like it is like a controlled fall right you know so it's like a crane sort of dropping the like person then i guess or is it just our stunt our stunt guy peewee with his uh just laying down a rope he's just holding the rope like for audience uh reference peewee is uh he was our stunt like coordinator person and would always wear under armor and have just extremely jacked he was just a very specific person dude his biceps are like the size of my torso yeah yeah yeah for real yeah so yeah he could have just been holding we should have him on at some point but he could have just been holding a rope and just lowering someone down the stairs that's right that's a good question i i remember it being like
Starting point is 00:37:55 yeah someone like on some sort of mechanism that was like being like control dropped right but also we wouldn't really have been around for that yeah for sure you know what i mean because that would have been like a separate that would have been like a specialty shot where like it's just stunts and you don't really see us in any of those shots totally i feel like i would have been watched i mean unless it was shot like in a different day or something but if it was shot in between stuff it probably was probably no i have a memory of like seeing it and being like whoa yeah but i'll need to go and see if i can find any like photos or videos of that day which would be interesting even that shot at the last moment where i think it is tom and you see like the last
Starting point is 00:38:38 moment of like him bouncing off the floor which if i'm remembering correctly like how that probably works is they have you like arch your back when you're laying down yeah and then release it basically but his like his leg like bounces in a way that's like really effective yeah he does some real i mean we'll get to it in a second but he does some really good physical uh stunt acting in this episode he sells the shit out of the stuff anyway so we then he falls and is dead and we see our faces and then we cut to annalee sitting outside of a police station in her car which is a great little tease like it's literally just that shot and then we go immediately back to we need to call an ambulance why he's dead you killed him michaela
Starting point is 00:39:23 and and we're in the big we're in the big keating for fight scene about what we should do and felony murder comes up from laurel and that i remember being like a really big discussion amongst us as actors on set to like try or at least for me to like wrap my head around like why these people don't make the decision to call the police obviously like for practical reasons there'd be no tv show right but the felony murder thing like i remember several uh of the writers who were who were lawyers like we're trying to like come down and like talk us through the implications of us all being responsible for the murder and how yeah i mean it's it's also like herd mentality and reacting in crisis and like everyone's kind of on top of
Starting point is 00:40:18 each other and like it spirals out of control i think in a believable way like very quickly like we all think like logically about things but like when shit hits the fan like shit hits the fan you know yeah i also yeah the you killed him michaela from connor is so funny i also i could i could see um you doing that he was jack being like well you know you killed them yeah you get exactly and just leaving yeah you killed him i'm out yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah well i mean like i think i yeah again like i think at this point like they know us pretty well and they're like yeah let's give jack this line because it feels probably similar to him right yeah and as we're all arguing sam comes back to life from the dead and starts strangling rebecca which i didn't
Starting point is 00:41:12 remember at all i fully thought he was dead yeah yeah and this guy then i was obsessed with strangling he's so obsessed he loves he loves strangling jesus um anyway then we have like a very horror style shot which i kind of made me think like i was i was wondering like how they chose steven williams to direct this episode which he does so well like i would love to look back at his imdb and see if like if he had shot filmed any sort of like horror or action i don't know slasher thriller type stuff just because like or even just an action type thing because like there's so much of that in this episode i think when i was just googling before he did i guess he did some of the last of us watchmen yeah all right so this this seems like this seems like in
Starting point is 00:42:02 his bag then because yeah we get some really cool shots there's like you know a close-up on rebecca's face cutting to and from sam we see like the blood splatter from blunt force trauma to sam's head we don't see like what the murder weapon is like this is i shot a horror film last year and it's like a lot of this stuff is like if you watch genre films like you'll see you can almost like teach this and i'm sure they do teach this in film school right like the paint by numbers of some of these uh these film these shot compositions right but i thought they like play really well here i also got distracted because i put a bird feeder out and there's a beautiful blue jay outside right now i'm gonna have to move the bird feeder though because it's too distracting for us making
Starting point is 00:42:45 a podcast for sure or put it can you like put the the window behind you so the birds can be in the shot yeah and then yeah yeah so i can enjoy it yeah you can watch the birds and not listen to me yeah um anyway we see this like blood splatter hit rebecca's face and i thought tom did a unbelievable job of that like dazed like falling dead look and then you know katie does i think they do this great job of of like looking around scared yeah which is like definitely what you like the eyes darting the way that they do i thought was really cool yeah and then we sort of follow rebecca's eyes to to the keating four and then it uh pans across all of them and we land on wes and we pan down and reveal that wes is holding the now blood-stained trophy yeah
Starting point is 00:43:38 yeah which is so so sick it is it's also there's some for some reason like technical aspects of that that i was imagining oh this was probably shot this way or whatever like for the audience sometimes like when you're when you're doing like a blood like when someone has there's a pool of blood on the floor sometimes it's literally it's it's like a mat it's like a plastic mat oh yeah it looks like blood and you put it that's like one of those things you get in like a gag shop that's like a a tipped over melted ice cream you know that you could like put on the table or something like that yeah i remember those so and i felt like i was like i could hear them adding in the blood sound effects where like he picks up this thing and then like like it like drops down
Starting point is 00:44:21 at the end there yeah and then when he drops the trophy i'm like i feel like someone probably i think he probably drops it far away from the body so it doesn't fall and like crush his toe or something like that i was just for some reason i was like imagining how that was shot it's not real it's tv yeah they would also like they would do like forced perspective and stuff where like what's falling like it looks like it's falling closer but it's actually like way further in the foreground yeah anyway then we go directly into the office positions like the that all of those scenes that we saw in night x of us arguing mckayla in the corner connor sort of pacing by a desk connor then goes and throws up in the sink which i forgot yeah you did a good job of the the
Starting point is 00:45:07 i'm about to throw up look on your face i thought thank you yeah that's actually i'll take that because like i don't throw up very often it's it is interesting because i remember i'd be curious if it was in this season but like i i've thrown up so few times in like the last 15 years of my life that i like remember all of them and one of them was on set i do you remember this at all we were doing we were doing a scene all of us and i got up in the middle of the scene like i i exited the scene and ran out of the stages and and threw up in a trash can wow that sounds vaguely familiar and they and then they like brought a doctor to set wow what was the issue i don't know we like they thought i had like a stomach bug or something and i just slept they just let me sleep
Starting point is 00:45:56 in my trailer the rest of the day oh wow yeah it was the only time i was sick on set oh interesting oh so i was there for it yeah i think so i think we were all shooting a scene and i just remember sprinting and people being like what the fuck wow you know just exiting in the middle of the scene is quite bizarre right right you know when you have to throw up and you're like i have you know yeah yeah if you have the the speed of god yeah the speed of the wings on the wings on your heels the wings of angels so i do that in the sink and then i don't remember what i threw up with because they would they would like give you something in your mouth to like spit out yeah um so i don't remember that what that was we then cut and we see like a bit of the west rebecca in
Starting point is 00:46:43 the shower scene i remember i remember thinking that west was incredibly put together for having just killed someone uh-huh yeah i was like oh okay he's handling this incredibly well then laurel oh yeah we're trying to get michaela up is like really sweet the michaela we need to leave now i thought it was just like really beautiful acting from carla totally um and then asher shows up hey it's me yeah and we see a bit of the scene where we're debating you know implicating asher and bringing bringing asher into the crime so that we can get daddy daddy douche face that's right and then asher leaves and i do want to say thank you wesley for your sense of integrity i like that he says we can't have ashley implicated because he wasn't a part of it not because it
Starting point is 00:47:28 wouldn't work oh yeah it would definitely work yeah you think so yeah it probably wouldn't work just because like i honestly like when they're like even pitching the idea i'm like this doesn't make any sense because everyone's dna is in like you would literally need to get asher to like walk through blood but also he would he'd be like he's dead and these people killed him he's not gonna be like right right well yeah but then they would all be like you killed them or something you know what i mean like they would have to they would all have to like they would have to implicate asher in like a horrific they'd have to be horrific horrific people and be like you were here you did that you know what i mean oh so they would say that asher did it instead of them not in
Starting point is 00:48:09 addition to them i i'm not saying like that that's not explicitly said on the show but i'm i'm saying like the only way this works is if they go like fully in the paint and are like are like not only was he here he was involved that makes more i think it makes more sense that they were like it was him instead of us rather than like yeah we killed him but also asher was here and killed them as well you know i agree yeah but anyway wes thank you salutations we follow asher this is a new scene right that we shot this episode and screw it he decides to go have fun at the bonfire and there was something that felt it was kind of like felt like a little bit of like a party vibe shooting these scenes i feel like oftentimes we shot them on like a friday night as well in the
Starting point is 00:48:55 in the sort of fratter days and this was by jim lindsey corrected us it was at usc or ucla do you remember right usc yeah yeah yeah us i think i said ucla on one of the other oh yeah episodes yeah but there was one time that i briefly crashed a co-ed greek house party like a block away because it was like a block from where we were filming the exterior of annalise's house this was also a funny time for me with like my relationship to usc which maybe you came with me but like at the time elefante my best friend tim who made who made our uh theme music he was like he was djing like a lot of usc parties oh really yeah yeah and so like i you know because he was like coming up as a dj and so like you he'd get hired by like frats and whatnot um and i would
Starting point is 00:49:41 go to like those parties and you know we were like playing college students on this show where i'm you know 24 i'm not that much older than these these kids and i remember people just constantly coming up and being like oh like we saw you shooting like down the street right yeah so shout out us go trojans yeah all right we cut to bonnie at a bar watching the lila stangard dna sample news story there's sort of this creepy dude leering at her we cut to asher dancing it up at the bonfire i have no idea where you shot those scenes do you yes this was in the parking lot of sunset gower studios so i kind of wish it was someplace more fun like an actual bonfire but there was no bonfire nearby or anything it was just like 10 people but uh you know obviously
Starting point is 00:50:32 for time purposes you know yeah we also couldn't make a real bonfire in la because of the wildfire yeah that makes yeah that makes sense advisories every every weekend yeah okay we cut to we cut to wes and rebecca in the motel she's rehearsing her confession lines which we've seen so we already shot this then we cut to wes walking down the road he gets bumped by a giant dude in a viking costume which then made me think like wait is that the mascot for middleton like like the actual person who's the mascot no no like like are we the vikings yeah yeah i think that makes sense right i have no idea like is it ever said i feel like there's a viking motif i feel like i've seen people with like the viking hats maybe i think i think it feels familiar to me but like i don't
Starting point is 00:51:24 think i ever thought about it until i saw an actual guy in a viking costume i'm like oh yeah I guess maybe we are the Vikings. Right. So there's that. Which also made me think of, which I'm mad about still, that I, every season of the show, I don't know if you remember this,
Starting point is 00:51:40 every single season I pitched to Pete Nowak that Night X should be Halloween. Because I thought it would be so funny for us to shoot an entire season where like the murder night is each of us in a costume. That is funny. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:54 You know what I mean? Like Asher would have had like a ridiculous costume for sure. Michaela would have had like she would have been like a some very pretty something Connor would have been a very pretty something you know I don't know Wes would not have dressed up yeah exactly Wes would have dressed up like or would have like a clown nose or something that someone made him wear right I like that idea yeah Pete never went for it bummer makes sense no offense yeah it makes sense yeah he's like this show isn't a joke right that pitch this is my life's work yeah this is my
Starting point is 00:52:31 life's work get out of here get out of here no he would never um all right so he realizes he forgot the murder weapon that's he's walking he realizes forgot the murder weapon which fyi for those listening i mean don't commit a murder but it is like infinitely harder to convict people if you do not have a murder weapon he grabs the trophy looks down at sam and he has this i'm so sorry which i think i thought was such really beautiful work from elf then we cut to michaela crashing out in the woods by the bridge we're back at the very first scene of the show right that bridge is so funny to me like tying in the bridge because like it didn't exist like the bridge wasn't in la why did you go to the woods at this point if you didn't have sam's body
Starting point is 00:53:18 i was thinking about this literally like i never it had never occurred to me because i was like oh yeah they're in the woods because they have the body but but then you're later then you're talking about going back for the body i'm like why would you why are you going to the woods unless it's just like finding a private space to talk yeah dude i don't know i can't even think of reason though can you but the fact that it took us this long to ever ask that question maybe is just enough evidence that they were like no one's gonna question it yeah yeah i don't know yeah yeah that's a really good question i think that yeah it also like for me it made me think a little bit like okay so like annalise lives in like what where does she live like a subdivision in philly
Starting point is 00:54:08 like where's their woods right i mean maybe it's right across the street from our house like i don't know i don't know philly well enough because we didn't shoot there but i'm like are there just woods right like you know i mean like there's woods in like i'm thinking about new york right like we'd have to go to like one of the parks to find woods right you in la you'd also have to like kind of go to a big park where there's like a lot of people like are there is is is philly wooded i don't know you drove like three hours to this park for no for no reason until you came back to get the body but but it's weird right because like in the the premise that we've set up of us like driving through uh people going to the bonfire is that the bonfire and the
Starting point is 00:54:56 woods are walking distance is it the same woods as as where the bonfire is yeah for sure yeah that that's like the whole premise of them like burning the body is that the bonfire is happening somewhere else in the woods i see right yeah i mean i thought it was just like generally but i guess it makes more sense if it's the same woods no no no because remember remember in night x like there's like that couple that's like making out and they hear right they hear they're like hiding on the hill like in the lord of the ring shot with the ringwraiths right but instead a ring race it's a couple kissing uh-huh i don't know what you're talking about honestly i'm too tired i just thought of that as like a similar shot the hobbits leaving the shire
Starting point is 00:55:44 yeah so i think that the woods are nearby annalise's house okay but why we are in them at this point in night x i agree with you probably doesn't make sense but they were like no one's and ask questions because it's moving so fast and then they they you know they figure out a reason to bring us back to the woods later yeah and it never occurred to me until this until this time anyway i mean i guess it's a place where they can be private and have a discussion without everyone walking around with all the people walking around and stuff yeah to be honest like this would have been something that i'm sure like in my anxiety of being a first time series regular on a tv show and like not having information because of the way scripts were written like i probably asked
Starting point is 00:56:27 many times why are we in the woods like meeting up to this episode and was probably like told we don't know like we'll figure it out later you know what i mean but maybe they just didn't figure out why we went to the woods or maybe we're both missing it chime in in the comments maybe there's a very obvious reason why we're in the woods okay we cut to annalee's knocking at nate's door don't do it no don't don't don't don't do it don't do it nia's back and he lets her in he's like nia's back at the hospital just a reminder that his his wife has cancer annalise is the worst man why would she also not if the possibility of his wife was in there in there in the apartment people are really defensive about annalise on
Starting point is 00:57:11 the subreddit which makes sense you know but i'm just like i'm i'm in i am in i'm in there throwing elbows just being like annalise is bad man like this is bad this is bad are they upset at you for for talking about this relationship in this way i don't know i don't know if that i've seen that i just think that people i think i think generally people are like the the the kids the students don't appreciate Annalise enough. Sure. And my argument is like Annalise destroyed their lives. Right. Right. Anyway, we're going to get into this over many episodes. They didn't murder her husband, but in a way it was a favor. She immediately helps them cover it up. That's bad too. Like a good law professor teacher that cared about them would be like, we're going to
Starting point is 00:58:03 call the authorities and take care of this. Right. I guess I was imagining in the only, the only, I was following the student's logic, which the only thing that would happen is that they would go to jail, but not necessarily true. I mean, if we're setting up the premise that she's like the most brilliant criminal defense lawyer, then she should be, she should be advising them differently. But true. My theory, which I think maybe Pete would, and probably Viola would agree with, I think maybe is that like Annalise is kind of the bad guy. I shouldn't project that onto them, but i think that like this is you know we kind of talked about this a little bit that it's like this is the anti-hero time in television like you know what i mean like you wouldn't watch
Starting point is 00:58:43 breaking bad and be like oh walter white's like the good guy in the series like no he's the bad guy right anyway um so annalise is destroying nate's life we cut to the we cut to the coin toss we realize wes is a liar back and forth way too many times for having committed a murder what do you mean back and forth he's like you're in the woods and he's like oh he's like i gotta go get the trophy and then he like drives three hours back to get the trophy and then three hours back to the woods and then he's like oh let's get the body now and then you do it you know what i mean no that's what i'm saying the woods have to be like adjacent to annalise's house but even if not you're coming in and out of the place oh yeah yeah of the crime you know what i mean we're doing
Starting point is 00:59:24 we're doing a horrible job of covering our tracks right right and yeah because i have no memory i'm very curious if this comes back to haunt us yeah yeah yeah but we are doing we're doing a like again don't commit crimes but like the number one thing you're not supposed to do is go back to the scene of the crime right so like we do it yeah you're right we do it so many times and it's so bad right right all right we go back to annalee she's crying in nate's house saying sam killed lila i i hate this i mean i i i was watching i'm like why is she doing this and i like obviously she's doing it to create an alibi right yeah i i don't i probably right because what we find out later she's doing other things to create an alibi but also this feels like classic like codependent
Starting point is 01:00:08 you know like relationship vibes you know yeah that's so bad i get my stim toy okay all right cool we go back to the woods we come up with the bonfire alibi because the bonfire is in the same woods for sure for sure and then we go into the house and then yeah connor has this are we going to chop him into barbecue friendly pieces now right which maybe this is where i got the idea for the little like grocery bodega bags filled with sand pieces of body that's a generous assumption but okay yeah and then laurel comes out of the kitchen with like like a huge wad of toilet paper it seems like you know just like katie texted me after listening to that episode of you thinking that uh-huh the kroger bags right just filled with body parts they just
Starting point is 01:00:55 sent me a voice note of them laughing this oh my god it's so funny i watched that clip so many times and laughed so many times it's so good the thing i admire the most about it and i i think i admire this in you often is that like you weren't embarrassed at all by thinking that like i would be i think i've been conditioned to be embarrassed by things like that but you're like no like i thought that and that's okay which makes it to me more endearing and and funnier and just great all right laurel goes into the kitchen to clean the trophy and finds mikayla who's like about to call aiden and laurel like has her head screwed on correctly and is like if you call him you idiot the cell the cell towers are going to ping your location here but then i was thinking i was like
Starting point is 01:01:40 they already are right like our phones are already like all of the background activity of our phones is constantly talking to cell phone towers right so that doesn't hold a lot of water but again we like go over it so quickly that you're watching and you're like yeah that is true i guess yeah yeah and then i i wanted to flag too that i really like this scene from carla because she has this technique of speaking in scenes sometimes where she's like almost like out of breath you know like it's like this exasperation that like i don't even think i can do a good impression of it because i i it is like kind of like a technique where she's forcing like air into like whispers like this out of breath whisper which makes it feel really intense yeah totally
Starting point is 01:02:32 she's also visibly shaking her hand at various points in the scene too like when she takes michaela's phone like at first when she took michaela's phone and i saw the hand shaking a little bit i thought it was like an accident like i thought that she was just shaking but then when she goes to wash up the trophy in the sink then she's also like yeah which is like kind of hard to do yeah yeah that was really good between them too honestly yeah really good scene between them yeah all right and then fantagrams blackout days is gearing up i love i loved them uh singing this song i love this song we are back to nate and annalise he says she can stay um we cut back to us rolling up the body in the in the rug tom berica definitely seen like
Starting point is 01:03:17 definitely definitely is being used in some of this right up which like what a team player that he's just like sure yeah you just threw me down the stairs like a rag doll now now you can roll me up in the rug and then yeah there's like a little bit a little comedic bit of us hitting the wall trying to carry the rug out which i liked yeah that was funny i wish they let the body slip out and turn into like a marx brothers movie totally yeah totally yeah yeah slips out and he like falls down like rolls down into something else again yeah yeah we cut back to we did we have to do like a weekend at bernie's thing where that's right you know that's right through the bonfire i can definitely see a version of that that would have been good
Starting point is 01:03:59 uh we cut back to the hotel bonnie is making out with the dude from the hotel bar which i okay bonnie like get it i guess but then she leaves the guy and calls asher hey who's walking the street where we almost hit him in the car she wants to come over it's very i don't know i thought it was funny and cool seeing like all these scenes start to like converge you know yeah for sure yeah i totally forgot who's on the other side of that phone call i thought it was just some like inconsequential person but no pivotal moment pivotal moment We go back to Nate and AK, are we terrible people? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:04:37 It depends on who you ask. The answer is yes. Also, which I like about the show, like the show is constantly asking this question of its characters. Like the characters are always engaging with, yeah, questions around their morality, which I think makes it really, you know,
Starting point is 01:04:56 juicy, fun television to watch. She gets on top of him. They start making out and going at it as fantagram drops uh we cut to asher's apartment where asher's being very sweet and trying to like uh take some care with bonnie because he can tell that she's had a rough night and asked if she wants to talk about it that i like seeing that and he's he is concerned that she's a little too drunk to consent to sex which that's great yeah we appreciate that information we love that check-in yeah yeah bonnie basically says can over here she straddles him uh consents um asher tries to
Starting point is 01:05:35 throw bonnie and yeah i don't know i liked that it was like more clumsy like it was like a really nice a bit comedic juxtaposition with like the the steamy hot nate and annalise scene yeah yeah it's also there's no music to it which is like it feels like one of probably the only times like there's like a there's like a intimacy yeah truly where there's no music and yeah so when she hits her head on the books on his couch it's like very you know loud and stuff but yeah this definitely made me chuckle do you have sex with music on uh yeah do you i don't i never do really sometimes but very rarely like just dead silence i mean other noises i guess i'm imagining it like it's imagining it like like the guys who are shaking the car when you're trying to be in the car and
Starting point is 01:06:28 you feel like you can almost hear them breathing and you can hear the like the mechanics of the car like moving you know like the suspension uh yeah dead silence let's go with that right dead external silence from no i mean i put the bird feeder outside of my bedroom window so i we just have like birds like right yeah exactly that's exactly yeah it's cute romantic yeah it's it's like a disney movie kind of um okay annalise is leaving the house while nate is asleep which again makes me think she was establishing alibi she's back at her house and she's leaving sam a very emotional voicemail as we intercut with us in the woods with the rug and then west kind of gives this like ultimatum of we either all agree or we stop right now which i'm like well it's a
Starting point is 01:07:17 late like requiring a body like through through the woods also you're a liar like you lied about the coin toss so i don't know i don't know what we're doing i guess we break up the burnt body we load it into connor's car with the trash bags michaela lost her ring laurel offers to take the trophy to ashers we shot most of this right the new scene we are under some sort of bridge throwing the trash bags into a dumpster um and west thinks this is a bad bad bad idea he wants to find he wants to find an incinerator which like for me i was like what are we doing like like i understand the the the impulse but i'm like we just burned the body yeah double burning is better always double burning is
Starting point is 01:08:07 better but like also i'm just like where would you get an incinerator like where would we find an incinerator yeah you have to like break into a morgue and yeah yeah i also by the way misunderstood for a while and i thought that the plan was to put sam's body with it was in the rug in the bonfire thing and just pretend you were burning his rug and just burn it for everyone dude honestly not a bad idea you know what i mean like if if uh the only issue is there would have been a lot of cameras rolling there would have been a lot of footage of them and the rug burning first perhaps and then just like right burning a corpse right right right an incinerator would actually in researching this episode i was reading about how like new york city apartment buildings
Starting point is 01:09:00 all had incinerators in them like they we used to just like burn the trash i guess right right and then they would like throw the ashes out i think and i was like man it must have been so easy to just kill people and throw them into your building's incinerator right well i don't know maybe yeah um chiming in the comments was it easier was it easier was it easier to kill people oh dude i knew there was a lord of the rings connection yes i knew it um enough about the ring yeah yeah that's right enough enough about the ring frodo that's why they of course in night x shot that the ringwraith shire shot of course yeah so something i wanted to flag too for people watching is just a production note that as connor's car pulls away the street looks shiny
Starting point is 01:09:51 Like you see the refraction of light and you'll notice this a lot in film and TV. And what they're doing is they are, they're literally bringing out hoses and spraying down the street before you hit record before you roll. And, uh, yeah, cause like there are these huge, huge lights on these streets, right. That will then bounce off of that wetness and create the pretty little lights that you see. Yeah. All right.
Starting point is 01:10:20 we end this montage sequence with AK saying, come here so we can be together. Then we get a absolutely spectacular shot of some, some ships on the Delaware river, which like made me think like, I don't know the, where do we get these shots? You know?
Starting point is 01:10:34 Right. Right. Like all the exteriors of Philly. Yeah. It was like stock footage or like B roll or something that they, like, I don't think we had, I don't think ABC sent skeleton crews to Philly to shoot things.
Starting point is 01:10:46 Yeah. I wonder just crews made out of skeletons. um for our listeners yeah for our listeners we would hire undead um crews sometimes uh that had no flesh left on their bodies the wheels are coming off because it's the longest recap we've ever done this is my watch is wearing off yeah you're my your watch is wearing off i'm like sleep deprived from from rehearsal i mean we're both oh my days all right wes wakes up in the motel without Rebecca and she comes back
Starting point is 01:11:18 with bagels and coffee which is nice he then takes the thumb drive and destroys it which he says I mean I don't he's like this is the only thing linking us to being
Starting point is 01:11:34 there tonight I'm like brother that's not true the 30 times you went back and forth yeah also like you could have stolen that data at any time we're in the house all day every day right it's probably time stamped but yeah me i i don't know man you know more about tech than i do i have no idea i don't i yeah i guess it is but you could probably doctor that stuff i would think yeah but doing it without any conversation like it felt like non-consensual
Starting point is 01:12:02 which i think kind of loses me even more is like yo like i don't know kind of maybe involve at least rebecca who you presumably care about i guess the intention was that he was trying to they're probably the writers are trying to set him up for the the fear and the and and the heightened emotion of seeing rebecca gone and thinking that they like left then like making its way into him smashing it it didn't quite connect fully for me but i imagine that was probably the intention i think that's right yeah then we go to michaela who's at home looking at her vera wang dress yeah uh then we then we go to connor who's at oliver's apartment and maybe maybe it's my tv settings but our lips seemed kind of blue did you have that experience i don't know i don't know if
Starting point is 01:12:47 i noticed that it also occurred to me they probably never built connor's home because spoiler alert i don't think it's that big a spoiler but you know connor and oliver eventually move in together yeah so they're like yeah we're not going to build him a home that we're not we're only going to use for a little bit totally yeah laura goes to frank she's crying she stole the trophy from ashers he says she was stressed about exams and finding out frank's you know frank has a girlfriend and he corrects her ex-girlfriend that was so interesting by the way does that woman ever come back no i don't know okay it feels like there was more here that they ended up having to cut for time or something yeah i didn't i don't know also i thought she was
Starting point is 01:13:27 great i wish she did come back but she doesn't come like frank's just like you're out right i'm leaving you for this law student i don't know that's right like laurel and frank don't know each other it's been like a month i thought that you know oh you don't think they're actually in that moment where they came in the room in the apartment that she was already his ex-girlfriend you think he was actually his girlfriend at that point and then he broke up definitely yes wait what do you mean i thought that she was like just in his apartment as his ex-girlfriend no no No, I think they were like live-in partners. I think they lived together and she was like home unexpectedly.
Starting point is 01:14:05 Wow. I think so, dude. And I think he just is like, forget it. Wow. Damn. Wow. Okay. I think that's what's up.
Starting point is 01:14:14 Anyway, we don't revisit it ever again. She doesn't want to be a shooting star. She obviously is using Frank in this moment to take care of the trophy. He says he's going to take care of it. We're with Asher in bed with Bonnie. You already shot this. he's looking at the bonfire photos body picks up the call from annalise annalise is lying to her bonnie goes to the office even though asher wants breakfast with her which is really cute
Starting point is 01:14:39 then we see a quick shot of the garbage truck picking up the dumpster that has has sam's body in it we cut to michaela apologizing to mrs walker and signing the prenup which is covering that's called covering your bases folks really smart by michaela like one of the smart only smart things she did in the episode we cut to connor coming out of the shower you can sort of see my tattoo cover up if you look really closely i'm i'm also clearly self-conscious about my body in this scene because you can see me like trying to cover my body with the towel and in like unnatural ways. Um, I didn't, I didn't feel that, but I hear, I hear that. I think you did really good work here too. Just a lot of really, really natural. And I feel like I can
Starting point is 01:15:29 really thinking, see you thinking through and processing like in real time. And that silent part was just really like rich with behavior and emotion and all that. So yeah, it was really great. Thanks. I mean, I think that this is also like, you know, our bodies being fluid beings and, you know, things like I were months into shooting a TV show where like there was snacks available on set all day. So I'm sure like the scale was moving in directions that at the time made me feel a certain way. And, you know, I think you can see a little bit of that insecurity, which I think then maybe helped in the scene a bit. But Connor tells Oliver that he has a drug problem which is a cool lie i think kind of and he's wearing a v-neck he puts out a
Starting point is 01:16:15 v-neck that is very much a sign of the times like v-necks went extinct you've never i've never seen i haven't seen a v-neck in years i guess that's kind of true huh yeah they're just gone we'll be back see you soon v-necks yeah if you're listening to this in 2032 let us know that's right back chime in in the comments we cut to annalise's house connor thinks they're all going to be arrested because we're all there yeah and you're all talking so loudly about the murder with bonnie and frank few feet away no doubt this is one of the times where like the where you guys were probably like are we like to the director like we can't we can't be talking this loud and they're like no it's fine yeah for yeah sure yeah i bet you i was crashing out on set being like this is
Starting point is 01:16:59 insane like what are we doing like we because we've established in the show that people eavesdrop from room room right right right no one is making any effort to conceal the it's not even like you're pretending to like anyone's pretending to like talk lower and actually talking at the regular volume you know what i mean yeah it's just like yelling across whisper yeah yeah right hey we shouldn't be doing no it's it's literally none of that it's we were full volume talking about committing a murder right and yeah there's there's no but you know like they want i'm sure they wanted it like elevated and yeah i don't know they wanted it at a certain uh certain volume but i would have really struggled with that on the day i'm sure that i did yeah yeah thanks for
Starting point is 01:17:45 the last minute call from from asher for being left out of bonfire i thought was really great thank you i really enjoyed that west impression that moment it's like it's also it's just so ridiculous because it's like peak tension and then just to do something like that but it's that was what was so fun about the characters i'm like that makes sense for as a moment but like of course it's so ridiculous like it's so absurd that like you've built all this tension like in the most pivotal moment and then you just have someone do something so fucking weird out of nowhere yeah yeah so frank comes in with the trophy because laurel has used him and he says it's up for grabs annalise comes out in a robe no makeup which is i think very important
Starting point is 01:18:30 because this is for sure the first time that the keening five have seen her without her you know quote-unquote armor her beat and wig and outfits and the whole thing it's a very like i think intention like masterfully mastermindy yeah vulnerable moment from annalise to present in a certain way i think and she tells them the police are here explains very calmly that sam was having an affair with lila and she thinks sam fled and they're gonna ask you a lot of questions and i want you to answer them truthfully it's just really beautiful work from viola like it's a it's like a real intense turn and then we flash back to night x which is the only flashback we get in the episode and we reveal that when wes went back to the crime
Starting point is 01:19:27 scene for the 100th time to grab the trophy right he run what the the scene where he apologizes to sam he runs into our fearless leader when he says i'm so sorry we cut we we cut over to annalise who's by the desk and she just says don't be and then we see a incredibly exposed super explosive and fast montage of all of night x that takes us back to wes who right before we got this flashback you know annalise has this will you promise that you'll do that for me to the keating five and wes has this of course whatever you need flashback we go right back to wes of course whatever you need and you see this look between them between annalise and wes realizing that they've been puppeteering the entire night their fates are linked
Starting point is 01:20:22 they are tricksters they are one the lord of the rings please sponsor us this was such a good twist ending uh so good it's so good And at least he's just sitting there paying bills. Like, you know, oh my God, it's so good. It's really good. Yeah. It was a good episode of television. Yeah, it's a great episode.
Starting point is 01:20:52 I think it's good. I think it's really telling like how much it still slaps. Like it's still, and then just thinking about it as like a network television event. Yeah. Like, I think that that even hits harder for me where I'm like, holy shit. like people were watching this with commercial breaks right like literally on the edge of their seats one week at a time one week at a time and then like during commercial breaks were like sprinting to twitter with their thumbs and being like what and then they had to wait for i don't
Starting point is 01:21:23 know weeks or months between the mid-season finale when it picked up again i mean that was like yeah months this would be months right because it would be it would this would have aired on we said at the of the episode it aired on november 20th so the the episode 10 which would be the mid-season premiere what do they call them right yeah probably that would have been in january wow damn i think like the second week of january maybe yeah so i just did this on chicago med like i was like the mid i was the cliffhanger for like the mid-season finale and then the return so it and you know like the chicago night of television is still very much this network tv model right which is you know it's it's really cool because it's like one of the last franchises
Starting point is 01:22:12 night franchise night of event television but it was interesting as like an actor like talking to friends that are fans of these shows and being like oh man now i have to wait like months to see where your storyline goes. And I was like, oh yeah, man, what a time, you know? So I think that this is like such an effective mid-season finale just because it, I mean, it sets up for Wes and Annalise have had this like sort of tenuous relationship, you know, where it's been this like distrustful back and forth.
Starting point is 01:22:55 and uh manipulation and subterfuge and now this is like very clearly setting them up as a alliance within or maybe even against the rest of the people right oh i didn't think about that against the rest of the people maybe i don't know right like it's i mean you would think i would know having shot it but i'm saying as an as an audience member i'm like i'm like huh yeah what's gonna happen yeah yeah it's true it's true the blessings of of uh of having a terrible memory yeah exactly getting to re-experience everything for the first time do you have any thoughts we also have a couple questions we should take yeah let's take the questions first this isn't really a question but it's nice and so i'm gonna read it's from chrissy from all the way from germany
Starting point is 01:23:44 love germany have you been to germany i have a few times i love germany as well that's right yeah yeah i want to go back chrissy said i really i really enjoy your podcast it's so interesting to hear about backgrounds behind the scenes and how this business really works i watched this show with my husband years ago when it was almost done and we recommended it to our daughter when she turned 14 and she also liked it very much and her favorite character was asher oh and mine was connor um don't don't really have a question just wanted to let you know how much i love listening the two greetings from germany thank you chris we appreciate it um 14 i think is good job like waiting for your daughter to be 14 i think that's appropriate yeah sometimes i like run into people
Starting point is 01:24:30 now that i'm like they're like i watched your show when i was 10 and i'm like jesus man right first of all that's too young also like don't make me feel old but in hindsight i think that's exactly what i said to ellen pompeo when i met her that's really funny so it's like now coming back to right haunt me we're like ellen pompeo i was like oh my god i watched i watched gray's anatomy in high school and she was like you know right she's like go fuck yourself no she would never but you know as any actor would was like oh wow that makes me feel a certain way maybe I turned speaking of which I turned 40 very soon April 12th and I've just been thinking about how like middle age I used to think middle age was like in your 50s and something like that but
Starting point is 01:25:18 life expectancy for like white men is like 78 or something like that so middle age is technically like 38 but 40 is definitely that middle age because you unless you live to 80 you know what mean it's interesting yeah pretty wild are you gonna celebrate in any way yeah i'm gonna do a little something a little something i think 40 fucking wild yeah you should do something even if it's just like you know sitting by a body of water alone like there should be something there you should market in some you will yeah i believe you said market i thought you meant market like find some way to like you know market to like make an instagram reel out of it increase my engagement from my shadow banning yeah from your shadow yeah for sure yeah yeah i almost i for my
Starting point is 01:26:14 birthday went to the opera which i think we talked about and i did make a uh tiktok reel whatever out of it showing like because i i spent it alone and just like wanted to celebrate it somehow and then i thought about like reposting that during like the timothy chalamet opera ballet comments thing and i couldn't do it like i was just like this feels like i don't want to feed the the you know i get it dysfunction dystopian content machine in that way it all feels so fucking dystopian i i literally i just started making like i do think i'm shadow banned for all the the users uh the listeners please interact with my content yeah please interact with matt's content so he gets unshadow banned that's right but like i'm posting a video i edit i've been
Starting point is 01:27:04 newly editing some reels and i'm actually kind of enjoying it more than i thought i would it feels like kind of creative and fun but i yeah i edited a reel for like the fourth anniversary of my dad passing away on wednesday but it's i was also like you know thinking about like you know what's gonna get engagement with i'm like this is so fucking weird like what a dystopian hellscape that i'm like you know yeah how to end the video of my dad's death you like twerking at the top of it right exactly it's like what the hell anniversary dad yeah exactly yeah it's so weird please like and subscribe yeah please like and subscribe share the pod share the reels so wild holy cow okay we have one more question and then we should get off because this has been literal
Starting point is 01:27:49 ages i've aged um speaking of turning 40 ashley i was just wondering how the show handled actor illness whoa this came up organically i've always presumed that shooting is pretty relentless but if you're puking every 20 minutes whoa this is crazy that we were talking about this or have a horse throat for several days how did they accommodate that for the filming schedule is that ever incorporated into an episode thanks for indulging all of us fans with this podcast i love hearing all your hot takes also since you just addressed it on the last episode it drove me crazy that the show never gave us connor's apartment whoa it's all so tolerable yeah never connor's my favorite character my favorite but man is he a mooch yeah sure a mooch is he a mooch oh because
Starting point is 01:28:34 he's not because he's always at all over his apartment maybe yeah yeah connor's a mooch for sure yeah he doesn't need an apartment he has sex in bathroom stalls and stuff yeah he doesn't he lives in his his uh range rover or whatever and just like he's converted into like a sleeper van and just has sex he showers at the courthouse and then just smashes in his gym his g-wagon yeah he would have a g-wagon you know what i mean like nowadays yeah if it was like if it took place in la connor definitely would have had a g-wagon yeah man we kind of just talked a little bit about illness but there are some like big like there there were a couple big you know like obviously things happen right like the the big ones i'm thinking about are liza broke her foot
Starting point is 01:29:21 right like right in the middle of a season and couldn't walk and so they would have to like re-block um scenes yeah you know they would have to they would have to shoot scenes around her inability to walk i really one season i think our final season maybe i stupidly stupidly jumped off a sailboat in mexico on our on our christmas break or our holiday break and i really hurt my ankle and couldn't walk i had to i had to work the next day and i couldn't walk for a couple days Right. I think earlier in that season, I remember I got a head injury where I fell off a hammock and I cracked my head open. Yeah. And I had to get like 10 staples. Yeah. Dude, I'm always somewhat injured. Damn. Yeah. It is a good question. But like, obviously they accommodate, but like, they also don't. Like, it's a business. Like it's it you have to just show up and it's it's inaccessible in that way. Right? Like, I mean, look, like the reality is, is that like in this industry, like the schedules are so demanding that like actors are often privileged where they're making more money, they're living closer to sets. But like, there are people driving hours, hours to get to and from work and are so sleep deprived that they're like crashing their cars and dying in accidents. And yeah, unfortunately, it's like late stage capitalism where time is money and money is time. And so it's, yeah, it's pretty frowned down upon if you're taking, you can't really like
Starting point is 01:30:59 take sick days, I would say. Yeah, totally. And it's, you know, and it's obviously we shot this before COVID existed. And so now, you know, it's, it's not good. And obviously this is a, not necessarily, obviously Jack knows this, but this is a, a big area that I'm very passionate, you know, about and having long COVID and just also being aware that probably not good for most people to get infinite COVID infections, you know? And we have one of, we're in one of the few jobs and one of the few professions where
Starting point is 01:31:36 as an actor, we can't really protect ourselves with like a mask, which is also like the first line of defense, thinking about people who are immunocompromised, who know they definitely cannot afford to get COVID again. So that becomes complicated and there need to be sort of accommodations made to make it be safe in that way. But I think that there needs to be, there does need to be in general, I think better things going on, including air quality standards, right? Like we can have HEPA filters on set and far UVC lighting, which kills viruses in the air. Like those are important things to have also because working while you have COVID, for example, and other illnesses can also increase increases the chances of long COVID as well so I have so
Starting point is 01:32:19 many more things to say about it but that's what I will say at the moment yeah yeah yeah I think that that's a good play like a good amount of information because this is something that you're passionate about and it has a large impact on your life and I've learned some but not enough about from you and other resources and but yeah in the context of like us making the show at the time, even then it was like, you couldn't, you can't really call in sick. Like, I mean, an insurance day on a set costs like $200,000 or something crazy. So you can't be racking up the bill in that way. I mean, you'll, I remember hearing like, I remember when I was younger and starting out doing a movie and an actor started like calling out sick a lot. And I was
Starting point is 01:33:06 like oh this is so interesting like wow and then my agent or someone at the time was like no they're trying to run the film into the ground wow for like whatever reason like i didn't know they didn't know but like they were trying to like destroy the production because like they just kept taking sick days and like destroying the budget right like these things are made like on a you know thin thin razor hair edge and um anything that tips the balance is is really tough for a line producer to fix and so yeah we weren't really like like i again for context i split my head open had to get 10 staples and i was working later that day yeah or i remember once i broke my tooth and they production set me up with like a very fancy dentist yeah like 40 minutes later
Starting point is 01:34:03 yeah you know yeah they would have doctors come to set at times they would have yeah they would have doctors come to set i mean famously they say the show must go on right and i think that that used to be kind of like a romantic notion of why the show must go on but now it's just like nah man like right we're burning money and that's not okay yeah yeah but yeah thank you for the question i think that that is a really interesting one and as always you guys you can write into us at how we got away with murder at gmail.com you can also post on the subreddit that's been a really helpful place for people to also just like start renewed interest in discussing theories about the show and then me just coming in and being like annalise is bad right right they're they're
Starting point is 01:34:48 gonna block you from it yeah yeah exactly i get banned from my own stuff all right so this is the longest episode we've ever done maybe this will be a two-parter we don't know um we'll figure that out and thanks for oh wait we need to do other stuff about the next episode yeah we're not done yet we're not done my light went out it's been so long my light my light was like Yeah, you lost power. I was like, I'm out. Yeah, exactly. All right.
Starting point is 01:35:14 The next, the episode release order is episode nine, Kill Me, Kill Me, Kill Me, which is this. First three-parter. Just rolls off your tongue. Our producer just said this is the first three-parter, which is great. All right, so this episode is going to be out. You're listening to this episode right now.
Starting point is 01:35:33 And then next week is the one and only Carla Sousa. Carla Carla so tune in for that because that is a really lovely great conversation and we are so happy to have her on and she's talking about some new projects she has coming up so like if you're a fan of Carla Sousa in the way that we are you should you should tune in and hear about what she's cooking because she she's got a lot of things up you know in the air she's juggling so many things it's so impressive and then we after that we come back this is nice too because this is kind of like a built-in mid-season finale structure we're like we're gonna take a little break with carlo right right and then we come back in two weeks in and then we have episode 10
Starting point is 01:36:21 hello raskolnikov raskolnikov i don't know what the fuck that's talking about is it like i feel like it's like talking about like 17th century like russian monarchs or something that's the name it's a character it's a character from crime and punishment oh it is okay so not entirely wrong yeah no not entirely wrong you know what i'm laughing though only because like i didn't know that but like i'm sure our producers like it's from crime and punishment and then it's a novel as if we're so dumb we don't know what that's so good um no but i the only reason this like clicks for me is because i just remember elfie on set being like doyster esky like you know crime and punishment right and me being like
