How We Got Away with Murder - 110: Hello Raskolnikov
Episode Date: May 14, 2026The show is back from hiatus and so is the chaos. Episode 10 picks up with the investigation into Sam's disappearance, the Keating 4 barely holding it together, and Annalise sitting down with... detectives to answer questions about Night X... armor fully on, tell fully intact. Matt has done the analysis: she has a giveaway when she's lying, and there's a really big word for it. Meanwhile the Keating 4 are discussing the crime basically in front of law enforcement, Wes produces Sam's ring from the body, Rebecca goes goth again (and then non-goth), and Frank finds out Laurel committed a murder and genuinely could not care less. On the podcast, Matt and Jack dig into the bad police work, the visual juxtapositions running through the episode, and the first real glimpse of Connor being supportive of Michaela. Jack correctly guessed Connor said the title line... anxiety memory from not being able to pronounce it at the table read. Plus, Annalise giving the Keating 4 an exam scenario that mirrors exactly what they did, and Marcia Gay Harden closing things out with a full mic drop. We want to hear from you! hey everyone my name is matt mccorry and i played the character asher millstone on how to get away
with murder and i'm jack fallahy and i played connor walsh on that very same tv show and this
is the how we got away with murder podcast bonjour hello and welcome to krj 95 3 12 1 1 9 5 4 3 8 7
2 dude you would make such a good uh what do they call them shock jocks is that right that's right
yeah yeah well get a load of this guy do you remember when you got into a fight with shock
jocks what is oh wait with with that one specific yeah yeah i do yeah yeah they were running this
like ridiculously yeah some terrible misogynistic misogynistic clip segment program and i was like
it was i think sort of like towards the beginning of your how do you want to describe your your
activism social awareness yeah yeah you would heard it like while driving or in an uber i was
I was in an Uber and I started recording it in the Uber and talking to the driver about it. Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't even remember what the content was, but I remember it was like really fucked up.
It was, I don't remember specifically, so I don't want to speak out of turn, but I remember it being, yeah, really not okay. And you like.
Oh, I remember the name of the show now too.
You went hard against them on Twitter and I was kind of just like, you know, trying to chime in being like, yeah, get them Matt.
Like it was really inspiring.
I was just like, Oh, this is this. Yeah, you're right. This is what you should be using your
platform for. That's really interesting. Yeah. And I remember, yeah, them tweeting back and then,
and then at some point it seemed like someone with more like sense seemed to like take over
the Twitter thing and was like, we apologize or something. I don't remember. Probably like a young
intern that was like, yeah, maybe this isn't, this is dumb and antiquated and archaic. Yeah.
yeah um well anywho how you doing i'm well yeah today is my day off so this is my weekend
nice but you were asking about the actual weekend uh the actual weekend the saturday sunday days
yeah the actual weekend was good i was hoping to uh yesterday was easter um i was hoping to
see my cousin who made a big like easter supper but i was really tired after uh i was at the
theater for the show. One of our, one of our last previews because we're opening on this coming
Thursday. And so I didn't make it, make it to her place, but, um, but yeah, good. Otherwise
checked in with some family. Easter was a big holiday for me growing up. Um, you know, Irish
Catholic. So I checked in with some family, which was nice. Um, but yeah, what about you?
Nice. I was good. It was chill. Yeah, it was, it was pretty chill. How are you feeling about
opening coming up it's exciting i think the show is is great i'm really excited for
sort of like you know they which has been a learning experience for me but they sort of like
they hold the reviews until uh like mid midnight of opening night and then so so this coming friday
all of the reviews for the show will come out oh wow and i think they're overwhelmingly going to
be positive i think the production is incredible and yeah it's just it's interesting like you know
because i've been on reddit you know inner interfacing with our with our how to get with
murder subreddit i've also been on like the broadway subreddit and seeing like you know
people that are just seeing previews are are doing these like unsanctioned just reviews right because
because they're seeing the show um and it's been um really really positive and um yeah i think it's
i think it's just a really good piece of theater and i'm grateful to be a part of it and i'm
excited for it to sort of like you know be opened up to the world so to speak yeah yeah i i know
someone who didn't know that i knew you and that you were going to be in it and and who saw it and
said it was really awesome that's cool here yeah yeah so they're also doing you know there's like
an opening night party and usually they're these like big to do's with like tons of people that
are like not even really like associated maybe with the the production you know kind of similar
to like all the events we've gone to for film and tv right like a premiere event yeah yeah but
they're they're for this they're keeping it like basically friends and family it's really intimate
and they're doing it at cats's deli which i think is cool oh that's funny that's cool you know
because it's such a new york piece of theater and i think totally they're doing it like in this like
iconic new york delicatessen is just like perfect so i'm really excited to go uh opening night and
get get myself a big reuben you know maybe a with some sauerkraut i don't know we'll see maybe i'll
get a rachel i don't know i don't think i've actually ever eaten from cats which is interesting
as someone who's born and raised in new york yeah that's surprising to me yeah yeah second avenue
deli i've very much enjoyed okay but yeah i'll have second avenue deli yeah yeah yeah well i'll
send you a photo they're like these massive you know they're like yeah like a half pound uh
you know pastrami corn beef whatever you want so i'm i'm really i'm really looking forward to that
nice oh yeah that's really that's the kind of sandwich that frank wanted to take laurel to
that one time a fat stack yeah that's right yeah that's right all right well we we are back after
a hiatus of of the show not of the podcast but the show right has been on hiatus now for
we had like a little two-week break so we finished filming episode 9 on like october 19th and we
start filming this episode episode 10 on november 3rd right and so it's called hello
raskolnikov i still can't you are you're the one who says it in the episode yeah spoiler
so so you guessed you guessed nate which was obviously absurd right and i guessed connor
and i guessed connor because i had a anxiety flashback of me not knowing how to pronounce
this name for the table read. Oh, wow. And, and I think that I like turned to Elfie. Elfie. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Who of course would have been the most well read, you know, at that time and, uh,
or at least of this, you know, type of literature. And I turned to him and I was like, how do you say
this? And I think he was like pretty judgmental that I didn't know how to say it, but then,
you know, sort of like tells me really quickly as we're walking into the table read. And then I,
of course, I think botched it as I just did. Yeah. I remember Alfie was the one who told me
that uncomfortability is not a word. It's discomfort. It's just discomfort. And literally
today someone used the word and every time I think of it, I'm like, I don't want to be the
person that tells them, but, um, but yeah, that's how it, that's how it happened for me. It was
Alfie correcting me, dude. I mean, uh, I was just thinking about this because irregardless,
which is not a word was just was just like added to the dictionary is that right yeah so now it's
a word yeah which is something he would have just like corrected me about on set and now i should
send him the the article from like the new york times or whatever yeah i love that yeah we blunt
forced irregardless into the lexicon that's right it's not in the queen's english but um but in the
American dictionary.com is there.
There it is.
Um,
so this is the fourth title that Connor has gotten.
The others were three,
four and six.
So Connor,
you win.
He's the runaway favorite.
Um,
all right.
This episode was written by Marcus Delzine.
It was directed by Michael offer.
So this is Michael offers return.
He directed the pilot.
Um,
and he comes back,
uh,
in all of his glory to direct this episode and you can,
we'll,
we'll get into it,
But you can see that they gave him they gave him a little bit of a film package, a camera package to to go off to the races with this.
You know, they give him a little bit more of a wingspan with the production budget, I think.
Yeah. And so it aired on January 29th of 2015.
So this would have been over two months since the last episode aired.
So the fans were rabid.
Right. Right. Rabidness.
great why don't you read us the log line right and to be clear is rabid and ravenous together
okay anyway i'm moving along got it got it yeah oh i said did i say rabidness did i say
no they were rabid they were rabid and i said they were rabidness i said you get rabidness
yeah we're moving on um i'm glad i actually did go back because i know that i guess it didn't let
um anywho logline as the investigation to sam's disappearance intensifies the keating five are
pushed to the brink as their fragile alliance begins to unravel unsure how much annalise truly
knows meanwhile as they scramble to get rebecca's case thrown out a surprise visitor threatens to
expose everything they've tried to cover up we'll be right back and we're back great read of the
logline let's jump in the opening is thumping it is there's like this heartbeat sort of like base
that that photek puts in it is this episode is notably without a recap which which i think is
really an interesting choice coming back from this like mid-season finale like you would think
oh we're gonna get a recap it's been two months yeah i guess a lot is recapped in the episode
itself right exactly yeah but so they and i wonder yeah even in terms of like sorry in terms
like episode length that they have to factor in maybe the recap time too and so maybe they were
like fuck it we gotta we gotta roll we can't do it we don't have 45 seconds yeah totally yeah well
i think that i think it's a cool stylistic choice that they you know the first scene sort of becomes
the recap you know we we jump right into annalise putting her makeup on and we hear you know the
voiceover of annalise being questioned by the police and obviously there's been we we saw like
the wig removal early in the season and i think this is like a beautiful call back to that moment
where she she's like putting her armor on for this you know she took she took it off earlier
where we saw her vulnerability and and her maybe as more of like a nuanced sensitive character and
not just this like boss professor lawyer and now we're seeing her put this this armor back on before
she goes in to tell all these lies to the police yeah no 100 i also thought it was like watching
this just this opening scene i was like oh it makes sense that that viola got a l'oreal campaign
from this is great marketing yeah yeah that's why viola did it definitely that's why viola
probably recommended those scenes was because she was like i need to get a l'oreal campaign
totally yeah not about not about the work but yeah right yeah yeah yeah but we flash forward
like a tiny little bit we see these like sped up the sped up footage that we sometimes see on
night x and we see this like deployed just in like the present day timeline which i think is also a
cool production choice yeah and we we see her kind of walking into the courthouse or police station
i don't really know where we are but we see her sped up as she's walking in and then she is with
the detectives giving her version of the events uh of night x and we're flashing back to the fight
with sam so this to your point this is like sort of the recap of this is what's happened right
yeah i love the whole just the whole style of how this plays out with the back and forth between the
past and the present is really really cool yeah i agree and then there's this this you know we're
we're right in it as the detective gives her the dick pic photo and questions why she didn't
recognize her husband's penis. And Annalise gives this great women aren't like men. We don't obsess
over every detail of our lover's bodies, which, which is a, you know, that's a good comedic line
for, for how heavy of a show we're in. Um, but I was watching it for the first time as an audience
member, cause I haven't seen this episode. And I was like, this is bad police work. Like if I were
a detective i would the obvious follow-up would be like okay what about the wallpaper in your house
because it's not even like it's not i don't know it's not like a mass-produced wallpaper like it's
a very specific wall it's a custom wallpaper right yeah from that one guy in philly it's like
purple and gold yeah yeah right yeah yeah seeing i don't know ak put on the on the makeup and the
wig and obviously makeup and wigs can be all sorts of things um and also like i do feel like it is
used in the show at times as like you said like armor you know and you referencing it that way
as and it's stuck in my mind uh a little bit in terms of like contextualizing when i'm seeing that
you know and especially like knowing that she's going to go in and lie boldface to the police
you know totally yeah just seeing the the the juxtaposition of you know like like sam is like
falling down the stairs and dead you just i'm not sure what you're talking about um yeah totally
interesting juxtaposition yeah yeah it's so good i mean we yeah so we're like we're flashing back
to night x and we see that scene of like her her discovering uh sam's body with the that like gut
like sam and that's intercut as you said with like i just hope i just hoped he hadn't hurt that girl
that it wasn't true and we can make it right and yeah that that just visually having those
juxtapositions is so powerful i think yeah you know like having these like uh super like
pacifying lines and then these like really violent images you know on screen it it makes you as a
viewer really uncomfortable i think totally yeah show how easily that these people can lie you know
and yeah and then we see we see wes pick up the trophy and so we realize that it's like a
continuation of that scene where he's saying i'm sorry and you know she's behind the desk saying
don't be right but yeah so it's like at that it's got that like anxious heartbeat thumping
um we see you know wes is explaining that sam was strangling rebecca how you know i i hit him i and
you know blah blah blah blah and annalise very calmly is says you listen to me closely and do
exactly as i tell you remove the body your dna is on the body burn it and then we we show wes
lying about the coin toss and so it's sort of contextualizing all of these decisions he made
over the course of the night you know because he was instructed by annalise in this brief moment
as you know he came back for the trophy and she discovered sam's body it's also really interesting
to see her like because when we saw episode nine we never saw the version of her where she like let
out this blood-curdling scream of seeing sam laying there so i was almost surprised like in a
way it's when she was like at the table it seemed like she was just like had been like paying bills
with his dead body there didn't care and wes walks in right exactly but to see that she went from
that that like scream that blood-curdling scream to then you know how she ended up with wes having
that conversation just makes you kind of you know wonder about the the journey of what happened
while she was sitting there i mean that'd be a fucking interesting scene just to see on its own
by the way i can feel my matcha kicking and now um if you couldn't tell us uh let's go stimulating
my my neural diodes i'm drinking a cold beer to try and get on your level i love that i love that
um my dysautonomia is just firing on all cylinders um i also um i'm glad that she mentions the body
with the dna some of y'all must have mentioned that before but that's obviously like the main
the main thing like that i'm thinking is like your fucking dna is all over that body
yeah right i mean did you
meant did someone mention that one of the keating four
they must
have yeah but
here's here's the poke the holes
in the plot thing yeah
at that point why
is our dna on the body
because of like the scuffle
i guess well yeah yeah the
tackling right
i guess yeah i guess that's
enough like our hair
rebecca
i'm strangling rebecca he probably has maybe you know yeah they're her you know skin hair
neck skin yeah etc this is this is very this is this clarifies we don't know how dna works
that's right that's right his breath the breath of his dna also i was thinking about this a lot
like in watching the show it was i think so so easy to get away with murder before dna became a
thing right like before fingerprinting like you could just commit crimes i think yeah right like
truly yeah yeah without the dna stuff yeah now we can like you know anyway i mean we'll get into
more of this but there's like mass surveillance by the government that comes into play here
there's there's dna um anyway yeah i guess our dna is on the body from the scuffle but our dna
is also all over the house so like i i had a hard time understanding like yeah but again this is
coming from someone has no idea how dna works so it's probably totally plausible that our dna is
on sam's body deoxyribonucleic acid you mean oh yeah no problem it's not it's not the last one
i'm gonna drop it something like that um this episode i got a word saved up for you very that
was a ten dollar word and then also ak says he deserved to die to west which i feel like was
the name of a previous episode that's right for a second i was like oh is that the name of this
episode no um but i feel like people on our show say that a lot anyway yeah that's what i'm saying
he killed that girl and he deserved to die uh and then she goes on to say i got you into this and
it's my job to get you out of it now go and do what you've been told so you know she basically
says burn the body get rid of the remains the music ramps up in a really you know we think
we're going to go into like a big like kind of montage how to get his murder moment and i think
it it surprises the audience and me that it then like cuts out and we just get like a quiet close
up of annalise's face kind of like tears streaming down in in the uh police interrogation
which i i thought it was just like a cool mic drop moment and then they ask you know totally
they ask about her alibi and she responds very coldly you know him nate lahey he was fired from
this department when your boss found out that we were having an affair right damn yeah yeah damn
who's a better actor viola davis or annalise keating hard to know hard to know i saw somewhere
that people when they win acting awards they should be required to accept the award in the
character oh i like that which i think is a funny you know because you actually won an ma playing
playing uh annalise keating and i i think it would have been interesting to see an annalise
keating emmy acceptance speech it would have been yeah treat the audience to a viola davis
live performance right totally what a treat yeah um i'm also by the way noticing something here
that viola does that i can't tell if it's on purpose or not um but annalise has a tell when
she's lying do you know what i'm talking about no she has to tell do you know what the sternocleidomastoid
is oh my god no it's it's these two muscles right here these two guys and there's three times in
this episode when viola when annalise says a lie and it bulges out in a way that you don't see at
any other time yeah including when she says the thing about you have to have to go back and have
you watched that when she says the thing about the uh the partner's bodies it like it just like
bulges out and it doesn't happen any other time like this i'm doing it yes i mean she doesn't
make that face when she does it but um she doesn't look like an idiot right right she's like
yeah yeah sam's uh you know we don't obsess over our partners bodies i would say that that's
i would say it's absurd that that that would be by choice but but viola is good a good enough
of an actor that i could see her doing that i could see i could see her peppering that in
somehow which or something emotionally that she like right the internal process of her as annalise
when she's lying that she's doing that causes it but it really is interesting i wonder if she even
notices it but we'll have to i'll point out the other times it comes back wow that that takes us
to the title card so this is a very fiery opening and as we said that basically the recap of like
this is where we are yeah we cut to bonnie and nate they're both at the station i thought it
was really cool that billy uh who plays billy brown who plays nate he enters the episode as
his name is appearing in the credits which like that's truly truly they didn't plan that you know
like i think that just given how much you know editing and you know cutting right i mean maybe
they maybe once they realized it was like close enough maybe they trimmed it down on either side
just to make it happen but like it just is a very cool like little easter egg yeah it's actually
part of billy's contract is it has yeah his knee uh yeah at least once every season yeah once every
is and he has to enter to his name um she of course lies directly to nate's face yeah you know
about about sam uh not being dead uh and that you know he says they'll find him and that the other
detective uh detective bryce played by april park jones clocks we see like her clock nate
talking to annalise which is i think gonna bite them in the butt later you can also see the really
like classic codependent sort of like dynamic between them right like her being like helpless
and him like you know saving the day and just like how like I don't know seemingly like
self-satisfied he is you know being like I got it you know that sort of thing also I was thinking I
was watching Viola on Amy Poehler's podcast I think and Good Hang which is great and I think
she was talking which i don't think we talked about because i don't think either of us would
have clocked it but like her first sex scene with with billy brown in the pilot was outside over the
hood of the car like it got cut or something yeah it got cut and i actually remember being on set
for it like i remember i remember them setting up the lights the kidding if i was just watching oh
No, I don't, I don't know why. Cause it would have been, it would have been like a night shoot. And so I think that they were folding it into whatever the Keating five was shooting, covering up the body. You know what I mean? And so I think we were just there like in holding. And I remember them setting up the lights. And I remember, I remember like Viola going out in her warming jacket and then like, you know, talking about the shot and putting like Viola onto the hood of the car.
oh my god watching it being like i don't think i should be seeing this like this is right
but they i i don't know if viola had anything to do with it getting cut or if they just decided
that it was like too much because we obviously the first scene we see of them intimately is
is that the introduction of neatly he has a character where he's like standing up into the
frame right right i think before that it was supposed to be them having an intimate scene
on the hood of her car outside the house that that sounds vaguely familiar strangely i think
maybe just reading it like stuck in my mind i was like wow that's a that's a choice right and i think
i think like probably cooler heads prevailed overall where it was just like this is a little
much like it's winter in philadelphia like these are two like grown adults like they would walk
into the house to have sex like professionals yeah yeah they're professionals exactly anyway
That kind of came back to my mind as I was watching this
and having had just listened to her tell this story.
Right.
We'll be right back.
Now back to class.
Anyway, we cut to the exterior of Annalise's house.
We're on the front porch, the Keating Four on the front porch
as the police or feds are coming in
and they're like taking out evidence.
And we are literally discussing the crime that we committed
like in front of the police.
Yeah.
with whispered breaths between the police passing which right i don't know i i i thought that
it was a bit much for me i thought you know like i understand that they're all rattled and they
but part of me too was like just go somewhere else you guys don't have to be there
yeah no one's detaining you right it's it's as you know it's and for the audience as a reminder
it's time you'd have to shoot like two separate scenes like you'd have to like in a way you'd
have to show what the house is being you know raided and also that this thing is happening but
yeah it was one of those things where you're talking and you're not talking quietly enough
um honestly this is tv world for sure yeah and it's effective like i think it raises the stakes
like it create you know it's really anxiety inducing it's really dramatic but i was just
watching it and i think it's also effective in like it sort of sets up like oh they aren't going
to handle this well. Like they're not going to handle being criminal as well. Right. Right.
Annalise wasn't there to tell them, don't talk about this on the porch while the-
Yeah. Yeah. Don't talk in front of the police. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's absurd, but I think it
is fun. Yeah. Laurel suggests that if anyone takes a plea deal, that the remaining Keating
members will turn on them. And I love that. I think that's great writing. I think it sets up
the stakes too for like the group you know the fragile alliance and just how fragile it is right
yeah then connor has this great mommy's home um as annalise rocks up and i was kind of surprised
that that wasn't the title of the episode right yeah it feels it feels like a fun line for a
yeah episode title but yeah we should rename it it's your it's your episode title anyway so you
can yeah i can rename it so we're renaming this episode to mommy's home uh i was also watching
this thinking that like we're doing a lot of cold acting and it for sure was i'm it must have been
super hot you know yeah i imagine so it's november in la which is not a cool time i do have a memory
in my mind of marsha gay harden um spoiler alert and and i think alfie being outside of annalise's
house and him specifically having a conversation and like i think requesting gloves or something
i don't remember if this if it was like a moment that he like gave in in terms of like the cold
acting in some way or something but i remember there was something i don't know i just have
like a specific member standing in front of the gate of the house and and probing questions being
asked about the temperature that it's supposed to be like wait what what when exactly is this
like in philadelphia winter yeah yeah there's that was a big that that's a favorite pastime of mine
was like me trying to map out like what specifically like what week of the year we were in
and i remember getting upset that like i remember this i remember sitting inside the annalise
annalise's house and they were shooting a scene and there were like the the shadows of or the
silhouettes of of leaves like rustling on the window and I like kind of lost it where I was
like all the trees would be dead like there wouldn't be like it's like December like why
but of course it looks better on television like if there's like this silhouette of like it adds
atmosphere it adds like some sort of depth to the shot and you're not really focused on it
but of course me as the actor caring too much about a small detail was like hyper focused on
like what what tree in philadelphia has leaves on you know right they're evergreens yeah right
right right they happen to have leaves yeah before we leave the porch mckayla brings up exams which
is crazy like literally insane that she is commit she is committed a murder but again this is like
the many balls that we have to juggle right on the show we're like there have to be stakes in
all corners of their lives. Uh, and so we're setting up the premise of like, like, it's almost
a reminder, like, Hey, they're still in law school. Yeah. You know, and that's going to become a,
that's going to become a problem. Um, and we go from there into Annalise's office, uh, where Wes
is kind of crashing out and Annalise is like assuring him that she's going to take care of it,
that she's not helping, you know, I'm not helping you. I'm helping myself. The less the Keating
for know the better um she kind of blames wes you know she's like if you don't tell rebecca
last time you told rebecca something look what happened which is a crazy gaslight manipulation
to put on wes you think she's inferring that what that and then that sam died oh yeah i i mean she
i think directly is saying you told rebecca and she then came here to steal information from my
husband and now he's dead it's your fault like she yeah that's true that's true i was just not
remembering a plot thing yeah yeah annalise then says you know reminding us about the dna samples
that are being collected from all of lila's all the men in her life and that the the dna will uh
exonerate rebecca and then it becomes this like very intimate sort of like maternal moment where
she's trying to like instill west with confidence which i think is such a good like roller coaster
of a scene where she goes to like she goes from saying like you're basically responsible for
my husband being dead to this like caretaker maternal like it just shows how honestly
fucked up annalise is as a human being yeah and honestly someone like touching my cheek like that
i just that would be very uncomfortable um i think for you too yeah i would hate it other than i
don't think my mom would other would do it really i mean maybe like in a you know we would do it
like in a joking moment with each other.
But like, I just can't imagine someone reaching out
and touching my cheek like that in a way where, yeah, yeah.
And I think you see Wes, I don't know,
in some way feel a little thrown by it.
And it's not the first time that she maybe uses
like some of that touch, like that one scene early on
where she touches his chest
and he kind of like gets flustered, you know?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Great acting by Alpha here too.
Great acting, yeah.
And then he, Wes, produces Sam's ring to give to Annalise,
which he is he took off the body which i think is i was like screaming at the tv i was like you
idiot like what are you what are you doing and then i thought to myself too i was like oh annalise
now has this surely she's gonna like plant this on someone like i don't remember but it feels like
something she would plant on someone to incriminate them in some way yeah it feels like it can't be
innocuous but i can't remember what happens me neither anyway we go from the office to the living
room frank has this good guard dog moment where he's telling the da is that her job
yeah yeah yeah you're the prosecutor i don't know that she you know has to wait outside
she basically comes to just like establish that she isn't buying this premise that like sam killed
lila and i don't i understand the show like the objective of the show trying to like sprinkle in
that this is a storyline but like for a character i'm like i don't totally understand why you would
come and say this like how it would support your winning the case i guess right i think it's maybe
just about just about the vengeance part yeah vengeance and in in like i do think that this
episode does a cool job of like pitting them as like powerful women against each other and like
there's some like quips back and forth so maybe it is just like kind of she was in the neighborhood
yeah she was in the neighborhood and she just was running yeah yeah she wanted to dunk on annalise
which is that that's right that's right so then we go into west being questioned which of course
is how the last episode was set up was that we were going to be asked some questions by the
police and to answer for and she tells us to answer truthfully and we quickly set up that
no one is answering truthfully west says he doesn't pay attention to sam also you should
know rebecca is my girlfriend which i thought was cute because i think it's the first time
it's made official that yeah you know which is very nice um we cut from there to annalise and
rebecca it also jumped out to me that like rebecca's goth again yeah yeah it's been a while
right i think it's been a while like i don't think we've seen her goth since the trial started
right she went she had to go back and get re-pierced after all the piercings healed
yeah and re-tattooed after all the laser tattoo no she doesn't have tattoos which is also kind
of surprising honestly but yeah she should have she should have like full sleeves yeah
annalise apologizes to rebecca for not going to the da sooner about sam's affair and then we kind
of like pan i don't i don't know what this camera moves called like this transition but it's cool
it's like we leave one scene and like kind of go into darkness and then it's revealed that we are
tracking over the bed of wes and rebecca like a uh we're on a crane right we're like tracking
through the wall so we're like we're traveling from one side of a wall to the other which
obviously aren't connected but um we see we're using magic yeah yeah we're using magic and we
see uh you know wes and rebecca laying in bed so we kind of have this cool aerial view over them
which like just from production you know context it's like that's not necessarily like a piece of
equipment that we would just have like around the studio like that was that was rented for this
episode for sure and as a result you see this sort of like aerial type crane movement uh a couple
times throughout the episode because again you want to get your money's worth like if you're
going to rent it for one shot you're going to use it in like three or four shots it also like
quickly elevates the production value quite a bit where like you kind of see this stuff in film all
the time and you don't really think about it but yeah it's pretty atypical for television that
you're getting you know what they call specialty shots and i think that they did a good job uh
michael price the dp of of sprinkling in you know making the budget really work for its money where
like yeah you know we see some really cool camera magic on this show from episode to episode and
then you get really cool shots like this every now and then and it's like whoa right right totally
And for the audience to like, this happens consciously, you know, around times where you really want audiences to pay attention. Right. So like a first episode of a season, a last episode of a season, the episode before the break, the episode coming back from the break. Right. Where times really need to hook people. Right. They're going to like amp it up a little more.
100 so they're in their apartment yeah something else worth noting is like it probably you know
it's probably one or two seconds this shot and it probably took like four or five hours on set
to get this just with like lighting and all of that just to give you some context on like how
long these setups take um rebecca asked west why he's being so normal he's very level-headed you
know says they're gonna be okay we get some smooches we cut back to annalise's later that
day, I guess I'm, I was having like a little bit of a hard time tracking the timeline, but I guess
we got to Annalise's like pretty early in the morning and West then went to the police station
and then went back to his apartment to see Rebecca and now is back at Annalise's. So maybe
it's like early after afternoon. I don't know. Asher is worried because he was at the house
looking for the trophy. So maybe, you know, that could implicate him in some way as a suspect if,
if there was foul play right connor says maybe you need a lawyer how dare you how dare you
annalise annalise comes in and says we have three days to get rebecca off
which grounds us back into sort of the meat and potatoes court case which is rebecca sutter um
and she says that we have three we have to prove that my husband killed lila stangard
which cues a montage uh lauren frank are getting hairs off a brush you you know she's upset because
he had a girlfriend and you know you didn't tell me about her and he's like she was long distance
as if that's like i don't know like yeah a justification for cheating on a partner right
that's that's that's insight into frank's character yeah sure you know and i think this
is the first confirmation that we have that really was his girlfriend because i think before i i
assumed maybe she was like in the apartment there and then we find out later that they had broken up
recently and she was coming over but nope just an old-fashioned cheating moment yeah yeah yeah
and you know he kind of has this like well you and con and she's like well i was honest with you
not with con like so they're we're kind of setting up the premise that they're both they both started
this relationship cheating on their partners. Also though, did I miss something? Are they,
that they're no longer together? I thought that they, I don't know when I'm confused. I thought
they just had sex on the porch, but that was probably like three episodes ago or something
like that or something. Frank and, and Laurel. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They, they, she was like,
we're going to work together and that's it. Okay. Right. Yeah. Right. This is when they
went for the coffee and I don't know. Okay. I trust you. Yeah. We had like a two week,
two week break from recapping episodes and I forgot everything. Yeah. Fair enough. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Um, all right. So they're getting Laurel says, stop enough. I'm out. Um, we have to prove
that Sam was there the night that Lila died. So we go to Colliver. Connor needs Oliver's help.
he's you know he tells he tells oliver he's gonna get off drugs after exams i think conrad has a
really funny sort of like deadpan delivery in this scene of like no no i get it like you need
to help your boss prove her husband's a murderer so you don't have time to work on yourself i get
it yeah yeah which is like it's it's perfect like shondaland speed of speech and just like deadpan
comedic delivery yeah conrad does a great job in this scene with his hacking and also like
very subtle acting like not a lot is like happening kind of on the surface but a lot
is being conveyed you know yeah stuff about connor and his quote-unquote drug problem the feeling
about being asked about something he's dating etc yeah yeah i think it's also like it kind of like
triggered for me like this realization that like he actually had so many of these scenes where like
he was on the computer acting with me but like not like just like his eyes moving and right i
don't know that's hard to do it's kind of we could we can kind of put it in that basket of like
uh phone acting and and car acting which are like yeah hard things to do but like yeah being on a
computer and like just kind of like looking over to someone and talking it also seems hard to do
naturally and conrad kills it because conrad rick and more a star of broadway and screen
performing to the gods the back of the theater i saw i yeah performing to the guys i saw him
I saw a big, big, because I commute to work in Times Square,
I saw a big, big, big ad for Devil Wears Prada 2,
and Conrad is in that, and I can't wait to see it.
Nice. Love that.
All right.
Asher and Bonnie go to the police station, which is cute.
They're going to get Sam's laptop.
The whole time, I'm like, where's Sam's phone?
I don't know.
Do we have Sam's phone?
That would be important, maybe.
They try and get the laptop, but they strike out,
and so does Asher in trying to talk about the evening before
where they were intimate all right the montage ends we are in Wes's apartment and Laurel brought
Chinese I actually remember filming this which is rare for me like I remember being in Wes's
like all of us together and feeling that makes sense yeah and like it was also nice because it
was like I want to say it was earlier in the episode we're like you know we all got back from
this like little two-week hiatus of not seeing each other and then like we were all um except
you in the wait were you there no no you're not there i was the chinese food yeah you were the
chinese food that we're eating because you're so scrumptious that's right but yeah i kind of
remember this and this is where connor gets the episode line yeah and yep i remember being very
embarrassed about it and connor is kind of like on this you know continuation of his like devil
care crash out where he's like we should party it up like we're gonna get caught anyway and then and
i am eating a fortune cookie and like i kind of vaguely remember eating a lot of fortune cookies
just because like whenever you eat stuff on camera you know you're you're repeating it over and over
yeah yeah there's also i thought it was very cute to see everyone at west's and there was also a
moment where i feel like i saw you like something that felt like distinctly you which realized i
don't often see um in the role of connor but i think it was like like conceding to someone's
point you're like there's some like gesture you did and i was like oh shit oh interesting
wow yeah yeah all right we'll take it it was fitting it did yeah yeah yeah i like when you
when you like know someone well enough that you can see like their like personality or
tics or whatever come through in the characters yeah they're playing like i'm like does george
clooney watch brad pitt and just see brad pitt you know or vice versa or are they like you know
anyway um i like this scene you know everyone's chiming in doing their thing uh and then rebecca
shares big big plot point rebecca shares that lila had asked about crucial the clinic where
where rebecca was getting her birth control this seems like something rebecca should have shared
earlier uh and if we could we basically get to the point where if we can prove that sam was pushing
for lila to get an abortion then we can we can uh show motive we're in court we go directly to
court where annalise wants the judge to allow the defense to get the abortion clinic records
judge morrow played by tamlin tomita basically says i need evidence not conjecture which is great
we then go to nate and ak they are in a car again they are always meeting in cars and it kind of led
me to think like why don't why don't we use nate's like i'm curious nate's apartment must
have been a location not a set right like we see her in episode nine go and establish alibi or
maybe it was episode eight where she goes to nate's remember yeah but i don't know i don't
know if we always know when the wife is back from the hospital yeah that that's probably partly it
too but it would be maybe too convenient to just always have them go to nate's place but
right but yeah i mean this is i mean it's a convenient location like if you're doing bad
things to meet in a car i guess right car is probably easier location to shoot into right
i imagine just like easier setups and stuff yeah totally it's quick we can do it on the lot you
know right nate basically says he's a cop he can't ignore the fact that annalise was with him when
sam allegedly went missing i'm an idiot if i don't ask annalise has the uh you know he's the monster
not me just line up a storm because she is also a monster and then i just yeah i was kind of
scratching my head because like nate just like takes her like word at face value and i'm like
this woman keeps destroying your life like she keeps lying to you and trying to destroy your
life like why would you believe this which then led me to like oh maybe he doesn't and maybe we're
about to see nate go right now detective mode right two thoughts one is takes two to ten go in
a codependent relationship yes right like one person has to do it and the other was maybe he
knows about the sternocleidomastoid muscle and um no but actually it happens in this scene
i can't believe you worked it in twice too i'm gonna have to there's gonna be one more time that
it happens um i'm gonna have to send you a clip of it but she's lying that she's lying about oh
yeah there's just one point in this scene where where you see it happen cool yeah i'll have to i
can't wait to see it yeah chime in in the comments if you see this there you go we go from there to
laurel being questioned big big flag for me at this point was like why don't any of these kids
have lawyers just friendly, friendly reminder to the audience. Never talk to the police without a
lawyer, always lawyer up. Cops are not on your side. Um, Laurel says, you know, sometimes Mr.
Keating would look her way in a sexual way. Please don't tell professor Keating, which just seems
like a incredibly broad, big lie to tell the police, but let's do it. Um, Laurel and Frank
Then in the kitchen, she's asking Frank if he believes that Sam ran away and Frank kind of gets a little suspicious and says, stop asking questions. That's not your job, which I think is a great setup for what comes later between the two of them.
We go from there to Connor trying to get Michaela to go to the police to
confess. So this is, you know,
this is the conclusion or the seeming conclusion of like Connor crashing out
all of night X where like, he's just not,
he's not doing well with the anxiety and grief. Um,
and maybe I'm, I'm defensive just because I played Connor, but I'm like,
this makes sense to me. Like if you're a Connor,
i would recruit michaela and turn on everyone like i also yeah yeah i feel like you're doing
real whispering here in the living room like like at a level that feels like different than like
on the porch and stuff and i and i which felt good to me i felt like an honor sort of honoring
the reality of circumstances i and i i feel like i have to imagine that you were probably pushed
to do it louder and that maybe you fought back i don't know if that's actually true or not
um yeah i don't know but yeah i mean we're so close to everyone else like we're so we're
literally like feet away and like you know immediately west comes to split up you know
the private combo because he's suspicious so like again we've like set up we're bending reality a
little bit we're like sometimes you whisper and people in other rooms can hear you sometimes they
can't and yeah you know obviously things need to serve the plot and the episode right and this i
think you're right would have been a time where i'm just like i can't do it like i have to whisper
yeah i can't speak any louder than this right anyway we go from there to bonnie and annalise
in the office uh and bonnie has this like seemingly very sweet sort of like olive branch
of like this has to be hard annalise even for you if you ever need to talk i'm here for you
and annalise shuts that you know it's just like i'm good no thank you pass yeah yeah this is the
last time you're going to hear me say the word sternocleidomastoid on this episode um but here
again it happens um when bonnie asks and annalise right before she says i'm good it happens pops
out so um yeah yeah sure we should just please sponsor us we should just clip you saying that
500 times that's right
that's right I still don't know what it is
but I'm on board and I trust you
we go to
court and Annalise wants to
subpoena the clinic for
security camera footage of
the waiting room and I'm watching the scene and I'm like
what
boy oh boy oh boy oh boy
that is not
great that is
like okay
I mean, the law is like dictated on like precedents.
I'm like, this, this sets a really dangerous precedent, but Annalise does not care.
We're going into the court hallway where Frank has the DNA results and we immediately cut
outside and he is with Annalise asking her if he should stay or go.
And she, she tells him to stay and she opens it up.
He's the father and she has a very enthusiastic response.
and frank understandably he's like that is fucked up even for you like no right you know what what
is going on yeah and she you know doesn't cover and just says okay i'll tell you but bonnie can
never know which really again like this episode does an incredible job of setting up all of the
that's going to happen between all of the you know duos and trios and groups of people and
individuals and this this is a continuation of that yeah these courthouse scenes are also really
beautiful they're shot at los angeles city hall um but the architecture is really beautiful and
you can see those low those low shots trying to get all the architecture in the background and
everything yeah i was going to ask if you remembered where because there's like we we
see another one of these like aerial crane shots later of like the tile mosaic and yeah there's
some really really beautiful shots like really i mean just gives you like super high production
value you know exactly which again for the episode back from the mid-season sort of break it makes
sense why they chose a flashier location yeah and like you're seeing less and less of this
in television because of budgets right like you look at shows right now like like abbott elementary
or the pit that are like both big successes
on different sides of the spectrum.
And like, they have no locations.
Like they shoot in the same rooms
for every single scene, right?
And that's because it's cost-effective.
Like it's very cheap to do that.
Yeah.
I mean, to move the entire crew and company
of How Do You Have Murdered down to City Hall
to get the permits to, you know, shoot on a weekend
when we can like shoot in the lobby of City Hall.
like it costs so much money to do that and yeah just because of the tightening of purse strings
like we're seeing we're seeing that happen less and less so it's cool to like go back and see
like a network television show where you're getting these big set pieces you know in these
big locations yeah yeah and big cam and big camera moves with these like grain aerial things right
right i can't wait for jim lindsey to be like that's not what that is and explain to me you
know my my stand-in who who brought me an easter basket which was very nice oh nice all right we go
to asher being questioned and he says the trophy is the stanley cup of law school which i still
don't know what the trophy does um yeah yes you do it gets you out of a test sure remember mckayla
in like yeah no i know yeah but it seems like it's like it seems like it's like more mythic
than that that like the trophy can kind of do murder people right you can use it to murder
people you use it to get out of test you can use it as a doorstop you know that's right a paperweight
you can use it as a horcrux yeah yeah it's it's kind of like a horcrux of sorts right so asher
tells the cops that he he you know went to look for them look for the trophy uh and that it was
confusing that connor's suv was parked in the driveway that's weird that seems bad yeah and
then he tells he presumably tells them about bonnie right yeah yeah he just can't help himself
with the trophy and with bonnie right yeah just bragging bragging yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah and
that cuts us to uh to bonnie being questioned by the police and telling them how sam made a pass
at her to stay quiet which i thought was uh great acting yours as well and then we cut to
the hallway where she bonnie is confronting asher right and and asher has this like really like
nice i thought yeah like once he like feels something about bonnie and like wants to
revisit it in in like a genuine way right yeah yeah i feel like we see a little bit of a different
side of vulnerability of asher here which i really yeah definitely and she immediately shuts
it down saying that she was drunk and desperate right and that just it broke my heart seeing
asher's asher getting rejected like that yeah we then go to us watching the security camera
footage because the judge for whatever reason let us let us watch this and sam and lila are
on the footage of the clinic.
And it appears that he is trying to talk her
into going through with the abortion
and staying at the clinic.
And Bonnie suggests that we try and question
the receptionist who we see in the footage.
And then, boom, immediately cut to
the receptionist, played by Carrie Armstrong,
is on the stand and basically corroborating
what we now as the audience suspect,
that it was obvious Lila didn't want to be
there sam was trying to get her to go through with it and then annalise submits the dna results
to court which the the prosecution you know understandably is like objecting to the chain
of custody because you know who knows where this dna result actually came from but annalise basically
says you know run as many dna tests as you want like sam keating is the father yeah and the judge
Yeah. The judge sides with Annalise and the defense and says that we're going to look at that laptop to see if we can figure out if he was at the sorority. And the whole time I'm like, what about his phone? Where is Sam's phone?
Yeah, that is a great question.
Where is his phone? Like, like we're all, we're all going to get this laptop, but I'm like, wouldn't his phone be the most obvious? Where's his phone?
Oh, well, I mean.
did we burn it right just right yeah because you think you think that would be mentioned if it was
burned but i think everyone else probably assumes that if it's if he's fled he's fled with it but
yeah everyone everyone exactly everyone's working under the assumption that he has his phone
right but he doesn't like his phone is somewhere right yeah it's a great question i don't know
all right tune in to figure out if we find where sam's phone is at this point too where i'm looking
at this and i think we've stopped taking notes in court yeah okay i think i think we're at the
point of the season where we're like we're no longer gonna be taking notes right right which
was a relief yeah i also remember me personally struggling with michael offer who directed this
beautifully coming up to me and being like you got to be more engaged with like the outcome of
of this this case and like whether or not you know this goes in our favor and i remember turning him
to him and being like i chopped up a body the night before like i think that the only thing
connor's thinking about is his life imploding you know right right unfortunately like you know
all things have to have weight right for the the success of the show yeah i think i also i think i
remember like being sad when we weren't taking notes anymore because it felt like a great
opportunity you could like look down close your eyes for a minute yeah yeah a little moment of
rest and reprieve instead of just staring like intently you know yeah yeah yeah also rebecca
is back in court and not goth which is cool that she's flip-flopping uh but not cool for katie
because as we discussed in katie's episode this it would have taken much longer in the
the hair and makeup chair to achieve this not goth look right then we go to the next scene
which is mckayla being interrogated and mckayla explains you know very easily that they parked
at professor keating's because they wouldn't have been able to find parking near the the fire
um which i thought was horrific uh line of questioning by the police you know they would
never they would they would ask like where'd you right they would try to ask something to
entrap you they wouldn't just yeah yeah they're trying to entrap you and they'd be like how did
you get to the bonfire and she'd be like well we drove connor's car and then be like oh yeah
where'd you guys park or right whatever they do a better job than that maybe right um right because
they would assume that maybe you hadn't worked out that you were pretending that you had driven
the car at all so right yeah totally right 100 more questions that they can poke holes in which
again is why you should always have a lawyer present exactly michaela and connor are then
crashing out in the courthouse like lobby and i think this is like very effective in showing how
badly they are at handling the anxiety of the night before that they literally are in the process of
reviewing security camera footage to implicate sam keating and now they are surely on camera
in the courthouse lobby, you know,
making an implicating statement.
Under distress.
Yeah, yeah, totally, totally.
I also really love this line from Michaela.
I'll write crime fiction or be a housewife.
Mm-hmm.
And I'd love to read Michaela's crime fiction.
And Connor basically agrees that if we're going to do this,
they need Laurel too,
which I guess like safety in numbers, right?
If they're going to turn on the rest.
then we cut to frank obviously he knows he's he gets upset with laurel for how she has been
treating him when she has in fact covered up a murder the night before and this this kind of
stuck out to me too because what this does is like it should signal to laurel that frank's okay
with murders right well i don't know what frank's job is i don't think we know yet and i don't think
laurel knows but like it should jump off the page to laurel like this guy just found out that i
committed a murder last night and he's not that upset right he's upset that i didn't call yeah
that i basically right that i'm like lying she's a yeah he's upset that i'm like upset that he had
a girlfriend that's a good point that's a really good point i also thought it was just i'm like
wow seems really unprofessional that frank would just immediately go around and reveal
what he crazy analyst told you know just like crazy whatever his job is he's bad at it right
for someone who's like generally i think it was like very calculating yeah yeah yeah this is not
not his love not in the love department yeah he's not a great performance by frank delfino
Great performance by Charlie Weber, though.
Exactly.
Then we go inside court.
Connor and Mikayla immediately threaten Laurel
and say if she doesn't join their confession squad
that they will throw her under the bus.
Annalise has the data specialist on the stand,
Mr. Ingram, played by Trevor J. Davis.
He tells us, he confirms that Sam was at the sorority
between 1 and 1.30,
and Annalise Viola does this incredible,
you know passionate plea of why sam should be a suspect and and not her client i feel like
yeah and then when connor says listen to what we what we have to say or we sell you out i was like
damn connor that shit is serious really tough it's it's honestly interesting because it's like
he was so out of control the night before and he seems very in control of trying to like
salvage his life and cover up you know cover himself in this moment right we're then walking
through the courthouse again we see this amazing overhead shot we see that beautiful mosaic floor
we see the seal in the middle of the floor we are mobbed by reporters uh annalise is not there
you know rebecca's case i guess has been dismissed yeah yeah and it's and it's been a while since
we've had like a slow motion victory walk out of a courtroom i feel like you know i don't know
have we stopped doing case of the week for a while i feel like we have like for the audience
case of the week is when you have like a you know like a new case every week like our show kind of
had a blend of that and even in the beginning we were like we have no idea how much of it is going
to be that versus not i think we were hoping it would be less that because as actors that you
know tends to be less kind of interesting to play than like the stuff that has more like emotional
continuity um but i remember us being like oh it's a mix yeah but then they i think also thought
like it could be a lot that because they hired bill delia to be the producing director who had
come from boston legal you know and so i think that there was yeah sort of this question in
writing it like how much do we want it to be like a legal legal show how much do we want to be a
murder murder show right and we made a legal murder show or a murder we sure did that's right
yeah so we see that uh another overhead of analyst throwing herself into the stall
um breathing really hard she's she's sort of having a panic attack and then she overhears the
these two women in the bathroom talking very poorly about her you know in in uh her implicating
her husband as as the prime suspect and saying you know one one woman says like oh not even an
animal is that heartless um and i just love this writing where like instead of her like sort of
shrinking into herself she throws the door open she walks right out between them and she doesn't
even say anything she just like washes her hands and leaves them which is fucking on unbelievable
i loved it yeah so good so good connor and michaela are then trying to convince laurel that
if you know they'll be lenient if they turn themselves in and she's like i let's do it um
which i think is a great performance by carla because you kind of see wheels turning but you're
not like totally sure why um and then we're in another overhead in connor's car and we are
pulling up somewhere i don't know where michaela's real upset because she just got some sort of
notification about from her bridal boutique. And I liked this moment a lot. I think it's really
good relationship building where Connor's like nice to her and says, you know, if Aiden's not
the guy, like there's just, there'll be someone else out there. Yeah. I think it was, it's the
first moment we see like Connor, like be supportive. I feel like totally, you know,
yeah. And they get out of the car. I remember filming this. I really actually remember filming
this, which is cool. And they, uh, yeah, we start to walk up and we see Annalise's car and Annalise
and Wes walk, get out of the car. And we realized that Laurel has turned on them.
And then we flashback first flashback of the episode. Well, no, the second flashback of the
episode. Right. And we flashback to, you know, Laurel going to Wes's apartment and connecting
how you know frank knows annalise must know which means west must have told her laurel then tells
west that connor and mckayla are going to confess then we go to west and annalise and you know west
is like i don't know how but like you have to tell them that you're involved you know they're
scared and they're paranoid and then we go back to the group outside of i guess the police station
where like they're going to go and make their confession yeah yeah and it's this great moment
where it's like all of us it's like the avengers we're like all assembled in the street you know
and annalise has this great moment with connor um and then turns to the group and like is just
like let me help you if you if you do if you let me help you i promise you will get away with this
yeah i yeah this is really cool i also i do remember here that i i started to feel a little
confused about who knows what yeah you know i was like oh i my brain is hurting and then
it being revealed i guess that frank told laurel that ak must know now i guess and i'm wondering
do we see repercussions of that later that he like told laurel i don't know well we should i
hope maybe but yeah i i do think it's a i think it's a like a little bit of a leap that she goes
from like if frank knows annalise must know like a little bit right like if we're establishing
frank is like this i don't know sort of like utility player like he could very well have
found out any number of ways i suppose but but i guess i guess in in in his sort of like reckless
uh confrontation with laurel it sort of inferred that someone told him yeah right right so that's
probably at least because she's she's the boss yeah yeah um all right we go from that really
cool exterior uh avengers scene to class where annalise is giving them an exam and this is the
exam we've been talking about that we're all stressed about and we've been reminding the
detectives that we have an exam we need to study for. And I guess it's just sort of a yeah, I don't
know if this is how law exams work, but it's like a legal it's like a scenario of a crime. And it is
a group going into a convenience store for a robbery and then things escalate. One of them
commits a murder and they're all implicated and they need to get out of it and you as the student
in the class need to find a way to get all of them acquitted of the charges there is a way to do it
find it which is a very cool uh yeah it's a cool mirror of like obviously what you know the keating
for have just gone through the night before and and she's being so brazen that she is
you know using it as the law the the criminal law exam it's a cool way of extracting free
labor from the law students um she's like shit i need to figure out how to get away with this
that's right one of my one of my students will figure it out right exactly out of the
hundred people in this class yeah totally yeah one of them's gotta have a good idea
right right i it kind of made me think though i was like does this come back later like in the
i don't know in season six like do they right is there like surely there's a paper trail this being
the exam question but right yeah we then cut to michaela getting fit for her dress we get like
this little montage of like maybe they're gonna be all right where rebecca's decorating a christmas
tree which i really liked and you know west coming home to it uh it's very cute i love seeing
holidays stuff like that on tv uh totally she also has the whiskey i think that she initially
brought him early on psychology yeah it's really cute yeah she's kind of like oh maybe we should
finally crack this open which is a cute uh yeah bookend and then laurel and con carla has a
beautiful performance saying you know she doesn't want us to i don't want us to be over can we
we talk uh and then like kind of surprised me i was like oh connor's being interrogated
which i forgot that he hadn't been at this point in the episode um and him basically saying that
he hopes that sam is man enough to come back and face what he's done yeah and then i don't know we
see we briefly see annalise holding a pillow which i got i got defensive about because that's my move
on the show like connor gets old pillows not not true so i have to have words with viola all these
years later for stealing my my move that's right um and then connor is calling annalise
and we just hear i think we have a problem and we cut to the police station court courthouse
wherever we are the police station i guess and hannah keating comes up and says i don't care
what annalise has said my brother is not a murderer and it's marcia gay harden yes you can
only have that kind of like that cliffhanger with someone like marcia gay harden you know what i
mean like it doesn't work if it's if it's someone you don't know you know sort of that same way
yeah literally it needs to be like a showstopper actress and this is that i mean yeah yeah i
remember Marsha Gay Harden coming to the table read which I thought was cool too because like
some you know sometimes people are busy or like you know whatever and like the fact that she came
just for this line I think is a testament to like her as an actress you know yeah but like absolute
absolute like banger way to end the episode especially like I mean to your point it's like
when you introduce an actor like that that is recognizable you're like oh this is going to
become this is gonna become a thing yeah totally totally also it's great as an actor because
she gets paid for the whole episode for that one line which is pretty tight
yeah yeah yeah that is great for marcia gayard and that she got to show up and work for
four hours and then got paid yeah whatever whatever her episode rate whatever that is
who knows that's right yeah cool i mean what'd you think of the episode great i yeah it was
awesome it was great to come back to it and it's great it was cool and exciting to to see it after
all this time yeah as a first-time viewer yeah i thought it was i think it was cool i mean i think
that like i mean you said like they kind of they kind of pull up the stops for like big important
you know hook the audience again type episodes and like you have to remember too at this point
like we know the show's a hit so like yeah it probably would have been a little bit easier for
the producers to get like a little bit more money from from abc to get like the cool camera package
for their you know for the return um you know in the new year and yeah it's it's uh i think it was
really cool that they brought michael offer back to direct this episode having like you know you
you kind of i don't know it makes me think i don't think i before filming a tv pilot i didn't
really understand how important it is for a director to set the tone stylistically for an
entire show and so like a lot of credit has to be given to michael offer like he he he visually i
mean along with the help of many department heads and pete and shonda and all that you know there's
a lot of people that like come together, but like the end of the day, like he's the one directing
the pilot and it's set the, it's set the, yeah, the stylistic tone for like the show that we all
love. Um, so I think it's for sure that he could kind of come back and like, you know, we hadn't
seen him in, you know, since, since filming in this, like in Q, you know, this, this, uh, this
vacuum. And I just remember him coming on set and being like, well, we have a hit, you know,
and like yeah um also a fun thing which i think is true but i think that if you direct the pilot
on an episode i think that you have like profit participation in all subsequent episodes so like
yeah he probably was jazzed that it was a hit because that means the show's gonna run for
quite a bit right totally he also did have his side gig if you don't remember his side hustle
he would sell leather bound um like yeah uh containers so like a little booklet you could
put your script in um i don't know did he make them i can't remember if he made them or not yeah
he did yeah yeah beautiful craftsmanship like leather bound uh leather bindings for for uh
yeah for for scripts yeah i have one oh nice yeah i have one yeah that was his side hustle i don't
think he needed a side hustle but i think it was just something he was passionate about i know
yeah in case our show didn't do well that's why yeah yeah we're we're in a gig economy where
everyone needs 15 side hustles late stage capitalism that's right that's for another
episode yeah exactly yeah yeah but i yeah i thought it was a cool homecoming for him you
know like that he could we were all kind of reunited and um yeah i'm glad he could we could
roll out the red carpet a little bit with with uh all these locations and like you know the arrival
of marsha gay harden is really exciting um and yeah just i think like building out the world of
now what's going to happen. Like there's all of these relationships that are messy
and tenuous, but at the core of it, we have Annalise saying, if you listen to me,
I will help you get away with this, which is a cool setup for the rest of the season and show.
Totally. And yeah, the whole show, right. It's just like, not that I remember anything about it,
but I know that it does influence it. Yeah, exactly. It's funny. People were asking me
the other day uh i was asking reddit about questions for carla and people were asking
me all these like super great questions and i responded to the sub to the threat that i created
being like lol i realize i can't ask any of these questions because i don't remember anything that
happens to laurel right it's true so i'm gonna have to i'm gonna have to revisit the subreddit
questions in like years when i've actually caught up with the rest of the world and been like oh
yeah that was a good question laurel has a big relationship with another character on the show
that i totally forgot about um yeah maybe i stopped watching at that point and when you don't i don't
see it visually is different than reading on the page in terms of you know how you retain it yeah
well that being said you guys can send us your questions at how we got away with murder at
gmail.com you can chime in at the the subreddit uh great little community of people that are
passionate about the show and yeah there are a lot of a lot i mean i understand why but i kind
of got into it with someone where they were like they were like defending frank and i was like
isn't frank like a multi-murderer like i think you know what i mean but i think just like yeah
it's a testament to like the writing of these characters that people like them despite their
flaws you know that's successful that's successful writing that's successful gas gaslighting no i'm
just kidding yeah right in television right yeah that's right next week we are recapping episode 11
best christmas ever yeah who do you think said it who do you think i think
sounds like an asher kind of thing you know like i could see him like being like yeah
this is a dumb question has annalise said a episode title yet that's really interesting
because i kind of like my guest being annalise i could hear her i could kind of see viola doing
this like sarcastic like delivery of like best christmas ever yeah i'm gonna say annalise i like
that guess i like that by like guessing things that are also wrong that we've like created all
sorts of implanted false memories in our minds of like different characters you know like just
confuse everything even more for ourselves we have no idea yeah you guys just a reminder you can you
can chime in in the comments on the podcast and guess yourself but don't spoil it for everyone
only guess if you don't remember that's right don't be bad don't be bad santa won't come that's
right but yeah thanks for tuning in tell a friend share the episode that's helpful to us thank you
for listening to the ads as we know you've been doing if you haven't you've been very naughty
naughty naughty naughty listen to the ads um but yeah uh share it with your friends a co-worker
a dog walker um a just a passenger in your car um what other kinds of people can they share with
there's it doesn't have to only be people right it can be other kinds of beasts what's an example
of not a person you could share it with a dog yeah you could listen again with a dog as long
as you listen to the ads a pigeon on the street you know if you have a specific part that you
really like yeah banjo's living with my brother and so to you know i just make my brother play
the podcast for banjo so you can hear my voice right imagine if i actually did that that would
be crazy that would be a warming behavior right you'd be like you have the ad from the dog food
company and you have to listen to this episode right listen to this episode it's only fair
yeah listen um all right i gotta run but uh love you love you too i'll talk to y'all later
