How We Got Away with Murder - 113: Mama's Here Now

Episode Date: June 11, 2026

Jack is on a day off from Death of a Salesman, Matt is out of New York, and the mystery of how Tom Verica fell down those stairs in the midseason finale remains officially unsolved... harness... theory is on the table, stunt man theory is also on the table, Tom himself doesn't remember. We'll never know. What we do know: the finale is close, and Episode 13 just raised the stakes considerably. Nate gets arrested, Annalise takes to her bed, and Cicely Tyson arrives as Ophelia in full mama bear mode, announcing herself with one of the most epic lines of the season. Bonnie steps up to run a high-stakes assault case involving a nurse accused of raping her patient, makes a slip in court that could tank everything, and still pulls it off. Meanwhile, Annalise gets some real backstory, there's a devastating monologue fr om Ophelia about childhood sexual abuse and a house fire that in part earned Cicely five Emmy nominations for guest starring, sugar glass gets thrown, and Rebecca is tracking Wes. Matt and Jack get into the bumps, Asher's running commentary being highly inappropriate as always, Conrad showing up for roughly 48 hours to film all of Oliver's scenes, both hosts losing their fake IDs in their youth, and the Nate and Annalise relationship needing couples therapy immediately. Starting point is 00:00:00 hey everyone my name is matt mccorry and i played the character asher millstone on how to get away with murder and i'm jack fallahy and i played connor walsh on that very same tv show and this is the how we got away with murder podcast hey brother hey jackariah welcome to monday welcome to monday record at the moment we are recording on a monday you are listening we don't know when that's true that's true it could be any day most people do listen on thursdays though which is cool is that true yep yeah we should live tweet our podcast live tweet this yeah totally it really is a bummer that twitter's just like infested with like bots and like it's just it's just like a hellscape it really is the post-apocalyptic
Starting point is 00:00:56 like yeah max yeah i looked at the other day and i was like what is going on here holy i know so small niche uh interest in community right i follow there but uh yeah anytime you actually step outside that it's like when you open the door and i don't know i don't know if it was like beetlejuice or something like one of the doors they open it's you know sand monsters well it's because i feel like i haven't used it since the show and so i don't have any like communities that i'm involved with so like the the app doesn't know what to show me so it's just showing me like everything from like here's a puppy here's alt-right propaganda here's a conspiracy theory about aliens oh my god and i'm like oh god this is awful geez the fresh the fresh
Starting point is 00:01:43 algorithm the fresh hells yeah exactly how you doing i'm pretty good today is my day off from death of a salesman so that's been going well nice chris abbott lori metcalf both just got nominated for a good old award so the show is getting and along with direction and by joe montello and revival and some of the scenic elements too so it's yeah it's going really well i'm like we're really proud of it so i'm glad that it's getting sort of the attention i think that it deserves that's great tony's come out in two weeks too so fingers crossed for all that but yeah a lot of like friends have just been seeing this show so it's always nice to like talk to them about what they thought afterwards yeah but yeah no the show's going really well
Starting point is 00:02:36 i am tired i went to pt i've been doing i just went to the spa yesterday nice and had a soak in a warm body of water which was nice love that and then i spent the morning today cleaning and gardening nice a good day off yeah good day off what about you how you doing i'm all right i i'm out of new york for a month i'm in a warmer climate which is nice actually it's probably warm in new york right now but uh near the water which is really nice so get to have some sunset walks by the water which i really love wow i just started new sleep medication three nights ago and so i'm sleeping a lot that's good yeah but i'm also tired like tired so we'll have to see how it adjusts have you started the taper of melatonin yet no i have to see what happens first with this
Starting point is 00:03:32 and then yeah so yeah as long as this goes well probably hopefully know in a couple days then i will start a slow taper of my uh mega dose melatonin nice yeah sure yeah but it's always hard starting new medications because you're like you kind of start them on the if you're sensitive to them like i am you kind of start them on the weekend because you don't want it to mess with your work schedule right you don't want to take it and also be like oh shit but then it also kind of sucks because you're like oh it's my weekend and then you know i wanted to do this thing and now i'm like too tired to do this thing so uh yeah yeah yeah so it's a it's a journey it's a continual journey well i'm glad that you are embarking on it with sunset walks by water
Starting point is 00:04:11 that's nice thank you yeah me too yeah i got an update from some friends oh jim lindsey reached out to multiple folks in the camera department and tom verica himself about the mid-season finale episode nine we we talked a little bit about the stunt of sam falling down the stairs and it i mean i think it just goes to show how well it made me feel better about my crummy memory that there was some like ambiguity amongst all of these people involved about exactly what we did interesting people like have it's like it's pretty fuzzy for even like you know the camera department which would have been the ones like setting up the shot but i kind i think based on all these different puzzle pieces i think that tom verica there's a theory that we had tom verica in a harness
Starting point is 00:05:13 and that like just the he didn't fall the entire distance right but they think that they had him drop a little bit to film in slow motion oh wow which is interesting because tom doesn't remember that tom thinks that they had him in a harness at the top of the stairs to prevent him from going over the banister when doing the the shove with right with asia the aikida move yeah and he remembers a stuntman falling down like without a harness onto a pad interesting so we'll never know yeah there's just a gas leak at the studio the entire time is what our memories yeah but it sounds like we were our hunch was correct that it's like it was some combination of a stunt performer a cable and harness and a lot of cool like camera magic to piece it all
Starting point is 00:06:13 together nice all right well thanks for that recon jim lindsey and jack yeah and we're gonna we'll definitely have to get tom variga onto the podcast at some point yeah but yeah that that's the update i like that people are listening and that we're getting like a community effort of you know doing the podcast piecing our memories together exactly yeah yeah all right well we are getting speaking of mid-season finales we are we are getting dangerously close to the season one finale wild so let us hop in to season one episode 13 mama's home now it was directed by mike listo it was written by erica green swafford and doug stock still it aired on february 19th 2025 the day before my birthday. And we started filming November 26, 2014. Okay, I'm going to read some
Starting point is 00:07:11 of our guest stars. We have the icon herself, Cicely Tyson as Ophelia Harkness, April Parker Jones as Detective Claire Bryce, Michelle Hurd as Prosecutor Amanda Winthrop, Mark Famiglietti as david tucker magana tova as jolene samuels conrad ricamora as oliver hampton and andrew friedman as mr fowler i think it is it was interesting like writing down all the guest stars and i was like oh it's so it's so bizarre to me to read conrad as a guest star right oh yeah you know because he he he wasn't a series regular in the first season which we've talked about the whole season i wasn't sure about the yeah yeah he was i believe doing king and i yeah new york and so he would just fly in as we've talked about a bit yeah okay so we had our title guesses
Starting point is 00:08:05 you said cicely tyson ophelia harkness and i said asher and we'll get into that but why don't you read us the log line uh annalise's past collides with the present when her formidable mother arrives just as the lila stand guard case takes a darker turn as bonnie steps into her own with a high stakes assault case west and laurel uncover a chilling lead that brings them closer to the truth and deeper into danger okie dokie let's jump in so we have the recap rebecca has was arrested the rudy christmas card that west is obsessed with sam's ring was found in the woods frank did that he put it there and nate was arrested and then we finished the recap with annalise saying mama i need you and we immediately go into this very moody faux tech music group of like intercut scenes
Starting point is 00:08:59 we see nate being perp walked we cut to michaela in bed watching like on a tablet or laptop the news of nate's arrest and she is upset we cut to nate being processed he is getting stripped down and it's intense because billy or billy but yeah billy is a a formidable figure yeah and he's like just such a large presence and i think there was something too about just like seeing him in that position that was like really jarring to watch yeah totally the music is really effective in this in this whole sequence but yeah it's i mean it's it's disturbing you know they're that a black man is being framed for murder and which you know michaela does name explicitly later in the episode i'm glad that someone someone said that you know uh totally yeah so yeah but it is
Starting point is 00:09:58 it's it's pretty intense and it's very weird and jarring to see it juxtaposed with everything else that's happening with the Keating four, you know? Yeah, totally. We go from his being stripped down to Laurel going to Frank and, and saying to Frank, you, you put Sam's ring in the woods, didn't you? Which immediately for me, I was like, hang on a sec. Why? I mean, I guess like Laurel doesn't know that Wes had the ring. right she's assuming that frank being like the fixer for annalise would be the one like because
Starting point is 00:10:34 he got rid of connor's car he would be the one that puts the ring in the woods i guess yeah i assume so she's just like this guy anything good that happens for us as a result of frank doing something illicit yeah right yeah or or oliver right it's true as we'll see later she just doesn't know about oliver yet um yeah exactly but it does feel yeah it does feel especially fucked up seeing like she's like oh thank you juxtaposed with you know nate being told to like cough as he's being you know searched you know yeah totally we yeah we cut to that we we cut to the cavity search which is really intense and then cut to your point we then cut to connor walking into the coliver apartment well not yet the coliver apartment but oliver's apartment
Starting point is 00:11:20 with apple cider to celebrate his one month of sobriety right he's popping bottles while nate is being like strip searched yeah exactly totally yeah like it's it's such a crazy juxtaposition we see connor brings the how to get with murder version of martinelli's sparkling apple cider which is delicious and i really enjoy please sponsor us and then we cut to a nath a fully nude you know he's obviously covered nate being showered down i guess before he's put into jail, right? Yeah. Which is, yeah, I mean, it's just so inhumane and crazy. Yes, we cut from Nate being hosed down, showered to Rebecca and Wes. And Rebecca's just gotten off the phone. The police saw that Rebecca called Nate's phone on the night of Sam's murder. And
Starting point is 00:12:15 she's being asked to come in for additional questioning yeah and and then we cut to nate is in lockup and the inmates are not happy to see a police officer yeah i didn't love this i don't know scene for some reason i felt like it felt i don't know there was a certain thing i don't know maybe this was earlier in just time that this kind of storyline was happening or maybe i'm just not watching things or this is really happening anymore but i feel like there's a lot of like you know con air and like all these different movies where you know the rock where it's like you know the most hardened criminals you know it's just kind of i don't know it feels a little strange and so the dehumanizing the first person who sees nate walk in who's in the cell
Starting point is 00:12:59 there has a look on his face that makes me think that maybe this guy comes back like he doesn't say anything but it almost has a look like i'm wondering if nate put him in there or something like that i can't remember but he has that sort of look on his face right and then yeah i didn't lovely guy being like hey tough guy i'll make you my bitch felt a little strange i also i thought it was interesting that he's in general population as a police officer you know right yeah seemingly that that seems like it wouldn't be a thing right right exactly but yeah i don't know sure yeah i agree it's like it's like a bit sensationalized and i think it feels obviously it's television and our show sensationalizes a lot of things but like this in particular
Starting point is 00:13:45 yeah i i agree like it sticks for me where i'm like man okay yeah it's a bit it's a bit much right we then end this sort of like montage beginning and we cut to the arrival of miss cicely tyson the cicely tyson the cicely tyson she has an incredible entrance i mean she just like walks into the house we're like tracking from behind her and she has such a small frame you know and everything and she's just kind of like making her way in and frank and bonnie are like excuse me who are you yeah and she has this incredible don't you know the vip when you see one your boss came out of my v and her daddy's p right which just iconic i mean i literally iconic yeah yeah you can immediately get a sense of her extremely strong personality which is
Starting point is 00:14:33 understatement of course yes yeah am i remembering correctly that it was viola's idea for cicely to play her mother yeah it was okay nice i love that i'm sure well i'm not sure but i i i i would bet that like viola was even the one that like made the call you know to like see if that cicely would be willing to and it would be up for it but i yeah i remember vividly viola talking about that yeah she was like the only choice yeah and boy oh boy do we see why in this episode so we immediately go to the bedroom where Annalise is like in bed she's not doing well and Ophelia is in full sort of like mama bear mode she's like opening the blinds she's she's criticizing Sam she's going on about Nate and she's she's sort of like you know criticizing Annalise saying like
Starting point is 00:15:25 now now you ain't got no husband got no boyfriend she's just like non-stop and you know yells yells it annalise to get up it sounds like it smells like someone's dying in here and you know it's it's it's a very fast paced you know build up and we see or ophelia sees that it's not working so she tries another approach where she like gently gets onto the bed and says it's all right baby and holds her and then says mom is here now everything's gonna be all right where we get that titular line and you were correct yes i think i'm two for two i think there's a second please don't hurt me tony please he takes uh former tony awards and beats and beats us with them yeah yeah i mean firstly i just want to say like it was really cool i feel like after this
Starting point is 00:16:13 seeing cicely tyson kind of get more recognition and you know more of her flowers as well that was really awesome you know yeah and also yeah it was interesting for me when i saw her kind of pull the covers off and then change tactics you know i was thinking that maybe it was like i from what i'm hearing you say it seems like you're thinking maybe she was being like okay this tactic is not effective let me switch tactics i guess i read it more as like oh wow she's maybe never seen annalise like down this bad you know yeah for sure yeah i think that's right yeah and yeah it was it's you know for all the just very stressful way that she is like in these scenes i really love that you also get to see the moments of just her real love and care
Starting point is 00:17:02 you know in the best way that she knows how with the tools that she has you know which is often the thing with parents right they're like yeah trying to love you with with all the fucking trauma and conditioning that they uh have inherited yeah and we see the the balance of accepting the love for for us the way that they know how to give it um also advocating for yourself in terms of the boundaries that you need to feel that love yeah so yeah it's a really cool interplay that continues throughout the episode totally we go from there to west telling the keating for that the cops want to talk to rebecca about the call connor is jubilant about nate's arrest which is which is terrible yeah and does not sit well with michaela and then we we get news that we have a
Starting point is 00:17:53 new client and bonnie is in charge yeah the uh i really enjoyed your look when she's like so who's gonna do it and yeah yeah it's bonnie and you're just like oh cool great i love that the murder dissolves over connor from the title card is cool yep yeah yeah yeah and we get this like yeah we get this explanation that annalise is sick from from bonnie yeah which tell you know i think the keating four at least know that that's probably not true but i guess it's for asher's benefit and we get this really incredible i love this this this line from you the legal eagle of justice thank you that is so good that was uh the justice was improvised and i bet and the little the little hand eagle flying yeah yeah um yeah we have a couple of improvised moments in this episode
Starting point is 00:18:50 it's a real art to fear to know how much you can add you know not so much that it's like changing it and they're gonna push back you know but just like a little something something yeah yeah did you know that the the eagle like screech that we all know from from like film and tv every and everything isn't actually what an eagle sounds like hmm i don't know if i did know that i hadn't maybe it's been it's it's like been hollywoodified where like eagles don't sound as like ferocious and so it's a red-tailed hawk oh interesting the red-tailed hawk like they yeah they've dubbed they've dubbed eagles wow we see the red-tailed hawk in la quite a bit too yeah yeah exactly like and you're like that's an eagle yeah no it's not right right someone on this yeah the sound
Starting point is 00:19:42 designer was like who lives in los angeles you know who originally saw that was like yeah actually let's do the red-tailed hawk instead this is better yeah exactly yeah yeah yeah yeah classic nothing is real. We'll be right back. And we're back. Okay. We then go from there to our new client, Jolene Samuels, a nurse accused of raping her patient. She denies it and says, like, we have to make this go away because unlike a doctor, a nurse, you know, doesn't get a free pass and won't get, you know, just reassigned to another hospital. This will ruin me. I'll be forced onto some sexual predator registry yeah there's a couple times in the episode like she references something kind of bumps for me a little bit the you know she's not the prettiest girl in
Starting point is 00:20:32 the room i just i don't love it i mean i think partly because i do think she is sort of conventionally you know pretty to some extent and i know that like we hear other characters like kind of reference it throughout the episode too i just don't really kind of understand what it was like supposed to accomplish if it was just her saying it like i guess i would understand that like maybe she's just internalized you know yeah they're the show is trying to set up this like premise that the guy the plaintiff right is like very conventionally attractive and that she is not yeah and therefore he wouldn't consensually sleep with her right yeah i i agree with you though like throughout the entire episode like connor has a line later that we'll probably get
Starting point is 00:21:18 to asking asher yeah like would you sleep with her like it i it just feels it kind of feels like neither here nor there you know what i mean like like if they are defending someone accused of rape like that's that that wouldn't be relevant to the case right right it's also just awkward that no one says anything when she says that i mean not that you necessarily need to be like oh no you're you're good looking but it's just weird that it's just like yeah everyone's like yeah it's true you know right yeah yeah yeah like anyway yeah it does bump for me throughout the episode as well um maybe maybe i'll have more thoughts on it later i need to think about it a little bit but we go from there to court uh winthrop is making opening remarks to the jury
Starting point is 00:22:01 chad manning is this you know good looking plaintiff bonnie gets up to say that mr manning is clearly trying to get the hospital to pay out financially because it was consensual. The music sort of picks up and we cut back and forth between these opening remarks to the jury, each side, you know, setting up their case.
Starting point is 00:22:20 Bonnie seems to be doing really well and, you know, things are going well. And then she ends on this, the final line of her opening statement where she makes a little slip and says, for that reason, you should find Jolene guilty. Not guilty.
Starting point is 00:22:36 Yeah. yeah uh and you know we cut to connor in the galley saying so she's no annalise yeah which is funny like it it resonated with me especially right now just like the having to like speak publicly and like all the tricks our brain plays on us i was thinking about that yeah and i've been thinking about it a lot doing live theater where you know in rehearsals and everything and you know if i if i go on or when i go on the there's like there's this one line that gets a big big laugh where where the character says and biff is quarterback with the new york giants and every in my head whenever i'm getting on stage to do it i'm always like don't say the new york
Starting point is 00:23:23 rangers don't say the new york yankees even though it's like you know it's been like drilled into my brain totally but our our brains just you know trick us sometimes yeah i was yeah i was wondering about that if also just like i mean is she that is she such an incapable lawyer or is it that she's just under so much pressure to earn annalise's approval that that's like making her fuck up even more um right i think it's that i think she's like just nervous like i think she's probably super prepared right that's true and is and is nervous right i mean i also wonder like how much when she was hired how much was she hired for her legal skills versus other things you know what i mean i mean also legal skills is like researching is different than like being the person litigating
Starting point is 00:24:09 in court right yeah true yeah was she a trial lawyer before right working for annalise i don't know it's a good question i don't know why she's working for annalise we'll find out yeah maybe maybe i also like the way that the the bonnie and the prosecutors opening arguments are intertwined the way they are it's just a really effective way that like our show condenses for time but gets across like you know more information that's like one person's sentence ends the other person's sentence picks up and yeah it's effective it makes keeps it moving and yeah yeah agreed we go from there to the hallway where the hospital attorney david tucker is upset with bonnie about the opening statement calling it an abomination he is not pleased that annalise is off the case and
Starting point is 00:24:53 tells bonnie to do better we then go straight from there back into court we have a witness on the stand who bonnie handles pretty well giving us hope that she's maybe turning it around the witness testifies that the defendant had a large bruise on his testiculo um that's a testicle yeah and then we see you have a funny moment we see visceral reactions from west asher and connor at the same time uh i'm wondering this must have been in the stage directions i guess but and to some degree like that they react but asher gags west flinches and connor squirms i just feel like we must have decided beforehand like we're each going to do our individual thing yeah yeah it is funny though like it did make me want it this is so specific that it probably was in the stage
Starting point is 00:25:42 directions but like it is something to we've talked about a lot that like you know we're sitting there for like 12 hours as they're filming these these scenes and because there's no dialogue for us like the something i was frustrated by is like i mean the idea that they could just take any of our reactions and put it anywhere into the scene right you know which i mean that's their that's why they've hired us i guess but yeah it's just such a bizarre thing when there's no dialogue or anything there's no connective tissue to the actual scene work you're doing so they can just airlift anything and put it wherever they want yeah it would be funny if we all chose to gag that would have been like a little weird
Starting point is 00:26:27 and they're like that's not gonna work we're just gonna we're just gonna take this squirm from right jack later in the scene when he wasn't even acting he was just hot that's right that's right right man oh man oh man it is funny though i saw i saw a i was doing adr like when you do additional dialogue i know what adr is i'm just kidding i know you're telling me i was doing adr for this film that i did a couple uh year ago or two years ago and they they like i had this big emotional monologue in the in the movie and they they put it in a different order in the edit oh wow like the lines of it in a different order yeah yeah and it like really made me mad damn yeah anyway that's jarring yeah but it is what it is so we go there to
Starting point is 00:27:21 annalise's office where bonnie says the prosecution has an eyewitness for the assault to which ash responds someone got a free peep show which is highly inappropriate oh yeah my god yeah maybe i mean maybe this is a different time but it surprised me no one in charge just like took him aside it was like dude enough with the comments it is funny it just like kind of rolls on by you know yeah or that like even that there isn't like a reaction shot from like wes or or maybe there is like right or laurel or mckayla being like what the fuck like yeah and i'm sure i'm sure people reacted probably in the moment too right but i'm sure that they were like we're not we don't want this to be a you know make this into like a bigger thing
Starting point is 00:28:08 yeah it's also interesting of like what we learn about asher later yeah that that he would be making jokes about this case totally but again that that storyline doesn't exist yet so right true anyway we need to discredit the witness like we learned in episode one on the first day of class frank is sent out into the wild with mikaela we then follow frank and mikaela they're talking to miss rosalyn whose boyfriend we learn is the eyewitness we see the boyfriend ex-boyfriend now I think as we cut back to court, he is on the stand and he says, we shouldn't trust Miss Rosalyn, his ex, I think. Yeah. He calls her the B word. So probably he called, right. Exactly. And Frank, it turns out, got some good intel because it turns out the eyewitness
Starting point is 00:28:58 had a small stroke that day, which discredits their testimony. And Bonnie, you know, Bonnie does well here. I like, I like seeing her win. Good job, Bonnie. And then we go from there to annalise's bedroom ophelia is clearing out sam's suits saying felonious can use them for his job search they talk about the the poor box at the church and we're getting you know we get some like family backstory kind of you know for the first time yeah really about annalise we hear about their house being burnt down and ophelia is like really defending how despite everything all that life threw at her she still kept annalee's fed and bathed she took care of her and protected her yeah we see the lack of boundaries uh just immediately going through
Starting point is 00:29:48 sam's suits to take yeah it's pretty wild but i guess she never really liked sam anyway so and for yeah you know she had some instinct about that and a little sort of internalized classism from annalise here about the about the poor box at church you know the kind of this idea that oh they're just not cheap suits that you can put in the poor box at church right and her mother calls her out for it um saying yeah she's too proud for it and she does say i protected you which is i feel like a foreshadowing yeah for later right and then we have obviously responding did you yeah yeah and then ophelia hits her with the don't sass me anna may and annalise corrects her about her name it's annalise ophelia says it's the first time she's
Starting point is 00:30:34 been corrected because she's never in person because she's never been invited to annalise's you know fancy ass rich house i mean we're getting even just from like the lack of boundaries with like the suits to the the comment uh about you know annalise being too proud for the poor box to her changing her name to the house burning down i mean just the sheer amount of backstory totally and like world building and relationship building that we're getting is crazy yeah it's exposition but it's done well yeah i mean it's it's cicely tyson right and viola davis so it doesn't feel like it at all like it literally just feels like you're watching a play like you're watching two people just you know talk totally for the audience exposition is just
Starting point is 00:31:19 basically dialogue that's meant to just give information and context that needs to be given and you know it's something that's hard to do well where it doesn't sound like someone's just like and here is the information that you need to have right to be able to integrate it in a way where it's interesting is uh is a specific skill yeah 100 yeah so we we learn a lot we get the idea that ophelia very much resents how annalise has changed and has this you know this great who the hell you think you are oprah i can i wiped your ass i can call you anything i want i mean it's just it's just so fun to watch the two of them in this scene yeah so good annalise goes goes back into bed philia stands up walks to the bed and asks anna may did you do it did you kill sam you
Starting point is 00:32:07 can tell mama god is the only judge and annalise just puts her head under the covers it's real good stuff yeah i really like that we see annalise in bed so much in the past few episodes like i imagine this being a viola like idea i think we don't normally see a lead character like so knocked out by depression like in that way where they're just like in bed all the time i feel like there could be the the worry that it might become like boring you know over time yep but yeah i have imagined i could imagine viola being very intently like no she's probably really fucked up by this her husband was killed you know and she helped cover it up and uh just really sort of you know impressing like what the emotional uh experience and life was of the character yeah yeah i also
Starting point is 00:33:02 think that like in real life viola is quite good at uh expressing those feelings like she i like i think i've been conditioned like being oh jack how are you be like i'm fine like and if you ask viola should be like i'm tired yeah yeah i'm like i'm sad you know or whatever it is um but yeah i like that it's not it it feels very grounded in realism which i think is a cool a cool choice and like as i watched the episode i i became jealous too that i was just like oh man like viola just got to be in bed for an entire 10 day episode or whatever yeah we'll be right back now back to class we go from there to mr fowler is on the stand he is the tech expert played by andrew friedman i love dude i love his work he he's on it's always sunny in philadelphia where he where
Starting point is 00:33:56 he plays a lawyer which i thought is funny anyway he's found some stuff on our client's laptop filthy little secret.com she has the handle freaky nightingale and he reads aloud an entry that she allegedly wrote about sleeping with a patient which doesn't look good for the team yeah he does a really good job with the understated comedy here of reading yeah the client's post on the website so the apprehension around it yeah i mean it doesn't surprise me like being familiar with his work from it's always sunny that like he just comedy comedy whiz you know Yeah. And so just to make sure I understand, we are arguing at this point that they had sex, but it was consensual. Is that what Bonnie is arguing?
Starting point is 00:34:47 Yeah. We're trying to discredit the original witness that was the eyewitness. But we're trying to we are trying to establish that the plaintiff is just trying to get a financial payout from the hospital. Right. But we're not saying they didn't sleep together. Right. Correct. So what about this is damning? damning or is it just the fact that like she posted about it and you know obviously like slut shaming with women and yeah i think it's that okay i think it's i think it's just like it it yeah is how society works yeah right unfortunately being yeah being quote-unquote freaky yeah as a woman just yeah and like being like a pervert or whatever and then i guess the
Starting point is 00:35:29 the leap is that then she is capable of this crime which is obviously not right you know i was just like oh we're just like kink shaming her for writing some like smut yeah yeah yeah for sure yeah it is interesting yeah we go from there where we are in a one of the private rooms at the courthouse and bonnie's reading more of the website entries aloud you know our clients there she's resolute that they that chad initiated the sex and we get it again we get this comment about you know her thinking people won't believe that based on her looks versus his looks yeah it still bumps for me here i think she's doing really great work yeah magana i think you know it's this is like really hard material to yeah have it be you know so grounded and i think
Starting point is 00:36:18 she she knocks it out of the park yeah no totally bonnie then informs her that the hospital would like to settle and then we get this like emotional family context that she's from like a very religious family and that you know even them knowing that she has sex is humiliating so she she can't be labeled as she can't have this scarlet letter i guess and this seems to resonate a bit with connor like there's a quick like little reaction shot from connor which i thought was interesting because we get maybe some of that later in the show we then go to bonnie wants to prove the sex was consensual which we both thought was the plan originally but we're gonna really just prove it now connor says it wasn't which is crazy because like and michaela says she lied
Starting point is 00:37:08 i do think it's interesting i guess how like characters have to like sometimes be like the chorus for audience members yeah and reflect like things that people are probably yelling at the tv but you know as like law students i'm like it seems bizarre to me as like as good law students that they wouldn't you know the whole idea they they like applaud annalise when she tries to get people off even when they're guilty right and so i it's i guess more showing the power dynamic that they like i guess don't respect bonnie right which she then breaks up this whole this whole rabble rousing and yells do you talk back to annalise when she asks you to do something which was great from liza like that was it was it kind of made me jump on the couch yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:37:56 also this this kind of room all of a sudden i just had this memory about like sometimes we would have a scene and then as there were new revisions of it or new versions of the script they would especially with like the keating four keating five they would change who said the line right like it would be like originally yeah probably less with asher because his lines are usually so distinctive but like you know in the first script michaela said it and then next one connor said it yep and i remember that being you know a little challenging at times right because you want to feel like you're like you don't want to feel interchangeable you know what i mean with someone else yeah yeah and yet right for anything like this where there's a case of the week and all
Starting point is 00:38:44 that sort of stuff again it's it's not like you said we're trying to get the audience's reactions um coming out of the character's mouth so in a moment like that it wouldn't really matter that much if it was connor mckayla saying that line ever switched right yeah yeah that's right totally i like too that like frank kind of observes bonnie going off the handle a bit connor then as we mentioned at the top of the episode connor asked asher if he'd sleep with their client you know this is icky to me but you you do you have a really great performance here and sell the comedy really well which ophelia then walks in on which is just so fucking funny right so good her line did you nobody wants to be on the receiving end yeah exactly did you i like
Starting point is 00:39:37 did you feel a certain way about having to like you know gyrate and do all that in front of cicely tyson i kind of didn't you know i kind of feel like there's a there's like such a freedom in playing such a fool you know like yeah yeah yeah just like because normally i guess the fear would be like oh i don't want to make a fool out of myself but literally i'm like this is my that's my job is yeah you're like playing the clown right exactly um so and i remember i even improvised this line of they call me mr sex because i like to do it which is so stupid and corny it's so stupid yeah it's great and i also remember making her ruin one of the takes because she laughed when she came in and she's so cool yeah then i it was that's so cool proud moment like
Starting point is 00:40:25 yeah it's happening and i look over and she's laughing yeah making cicely tyson break is like that should be on your tombstone yeah we probably that's probably uh i wonder if that ever made into one of the blooper reels you know i mean it must have been on on film or on the digital whatever uh someplace but yeah that's really fun did the blooper reels ever go onto like the dvds or anything no i feel like they didn't they always used to for the audience they used to claim for us at the rap parties yeah for each season yeah for the nhd season yeah but i don't know if they did i wish they were i i love a blooper reel honestly i would love to get maybe we can ask pete and see if we can get copies of those just to have because like they're so funny
Starting point is 00:41:12 and like i mean we'd never be able to share them publicly sorry guys but they're they're just like god they're so good maybe we i wonder if there's some way we could get consent to share them yeah maybe i mean there's nothing like there's nothing like untoward or anything but right it would take a lot we'd have to get consent from literally everyone involved yeah i have maybe overly optimistic yeah yeah i like that okay we go oh i before we leave this scene I love that Bonnie introduces Ophelia as Annalise's mom and everyone stands up like giving like it's kind of like a nice nod to like this is Cicely Tyson as well you know yeah anyway we go from there back to the bedroom Wes comes in sits on her bed which I thought was weird and tells her
Starting point is 00:42:00 about Rebecca going into the police Ophelia comes in and says she has a boy child up here sniffing her drawers which is she's so funny i mean like her deliveries are like 10 out of 10 unsurprisingly yeah yeah and then we go to the police station yeah this this was interesting i don't know i don't know if it's just that on like i watch on my laptop and maybe the i don't know the resolution is better probably not though i mean we're talking about 10 years ago and people watching big screen tvs i think the footage outside the quote police station metropolitan division seems like it's from a totally different show it's like the footage is like grainy it looks like it's literally from like a 70s cop drama like how you would like show the intro of a
Starting point is 00:42:45 like of a cop station or yeah yeah police i mean maybe it was you know footage that we bought right from like star c and hutch or something like that i am i am out to a couple people involved in the production to try and get an answer about where we got all of the like exterior shots Because we've brought up a couple of those, like Laurel's family's house, the Philly, you know, the shipping, like the shipping containers we saw, like all of that stuff. I'm trying to get an answer of like specifically what the process is of getting those shots and where they come from. So stay tuned for that. Detective Bryce is questioning Rebecca. It is absolutely bananas that Annalise let Rebecca go get questioned by the police without an attorney present.
Starting point is 00:43:35 Totally. that's true i didn't think of that yeah that is i mean she's still her client right right that's crazy and like not only that she's now she's now part of this this web of of lies yeah you know that annalise is part of too like she's not just her client she's also like you know complicit in the murder and cover-up of her husband i'm like in what world are you letting rebecca go talk to the police yeah i mean i imagine she just didn't know but no west just told her oh you're right west literally just told her and and annalise was like she'll be fine just tell the truth all right oh yeah no that that no okay yeah that's strange anyway she she obviously lies
Starting point is 00:44:24 to the detective about you know stuff and then and then says that need asked her to plant evidence in the house and rebecca wouldn't do it yeah which this seems this this is clearly going to complicate things for annalise later i think and everyone yeah we then go to colliver oliver is upset he hasn't met the k5 which is cute connor has this like kind of like flummox like well how would i even introduce you like my maybe future sometimes boyfriend and then oliver cuts him off and says you didn't tell me the rape guy is gay yeah which is a wild line that is a fucking crazy line yeah and i'm assuming connor asked oliver to like look into it and they were just like chit-chatting while he was like doing some hacking like he's not just like casually
Starting point is 00:45:14 he yeah because he he has that whole line about like how he like does all this work for annalise hasn't even met met her totally right yeah yeah okay and then we also yeah here connor says you should see the women we're defending not so good looking it's just that's strange yeah it comes up yeah yeah you're right it is a it's an intense premise to like put so much time into yeah it almost it almost seems like also honestly i don't know like why not hire someone less conventionally attractive as an actor to play that role as opposed to someone who it seems like we have to keep saying it in order to like you know convince the audience that that she's not right conventionally attractive you know or something like that now does protest too much you know sort of right
Starting point is 00:46:01 you know this person over here who's clearly not attractive right right right everyone has to say it in the episode. Yeah. And she's like a pretty actress. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. Yeah. Good question. We then go to court and Bonnie is questioning Mr. Manning about the photos. The lawyers get called to the bench by the judge and Bonnie expresses that he lied about a fundamental fact that would bolster his rape charge. So if he lied about that, then he's obviously lying about being raped which to me i'm like this is crazy logic like he you know there are there's any number of reasons why someone wouldn't disclose their sexuality right in a court case right and i like that the judge you know it's kind of slaps bonnie on the
Starting point is 00:46:51 wrist about this and is like you know this is bordering on discrimination yeah yeah i remember this must come back later right it's not this is a hell of a red herring yeah yeah and we then go to the hallway where the hospital attorney says bonnie is out of their depth write down a number we will settle bonnie says no frank seems to sort of clock this michaela is looking up nate's arraignment to which laurel says michaela please please don't do anything stupid and michaela has this great when have i ever done anything stupid and i'm like girl you we we've all done stupid stuff so far yeah that reminds me of the i went to i went to pre-med i remember everything kind of line right exactly yeah it's so good yeah it's just good character writing i also feel like you
Starting point is 00:47:35 can kind of like see here like in this like a little exchange you can kind of see asia and carla's like real life friendship on screen i like that yeah i feel that which i like i also like that asher when bonnie says that she won't be settling asher says fight the power bond i just i like that moment oh yeah just encouragement you know yeah it was a prophetic line for your your growth true as a as a as a human true yeah burn the whole system down bond yeah let's go we then go to annalise's office where bonnie is drinking vodka it works for annalise maybe it'll work for her she is having a hard time yeah and frank's he's there he's kind of being a good shoulder of support you know like he he we we so often see like tough love between them and like
Starting point is 00:48:24 we're not friends but like he he's kind of showing up for her and I mean I think Liza's knocking this out of the park this whole scene is so good and it's like if they're giving her they're letting it slow down they're giving her like a little bit of space that they often give to you know Viola and then she has this great why'd you lie to me about sam and you know yeah we get this the context that bonnie is clearly struggling about sam's death and the fact that she was the only one that was kept on the outside yeah and yeah the fact that she's this truth has been withheld is why she can't face annalise and and therefore also ask her for help on the case right we then go to a bar where Michaela is cosplaying as Tammy and flirting with the prosecutor on Nate's case
Starting point is 00:49:17 or one of the prosecutors played by Brett Zimmerman she gets him to spill what he knows about the case and what the prosecution has learned from the the police which cuts to the court hallway Michaela's telling the Keating for what she heard from this ADA about Rebecca and she has this good like little exchange with connor i'm not the only one that knows how to use sex and wes of course is insistent that rebecca didn't lie surely he's gonna call her and i don't know why he believes that because rebecca ever everyone lies to everyone all the time on the show and then we get these like quick flashbacks of wes not trusting rebecca which i thought was interesting and then we go from there to the police station he wes is there to find out about
Starting point is 00:50:07 Rudy he is like a dog with a bone will not let this go and he learns that Rudy was taken in for an OD and then taken to a behavioral hospital which then made me
Starting point is 00:50:23 think like Rebecca's a drug dealer right yes yes okay she is yeah yeah she's like a bar she's a bartender also is she bartending still is she is she resuming shifts at the bar that's a great question I don't know I think it would be really probably near impossible if you were a, had like a public facing job,
Starting point is 00:50:44 like being a bartender and you got accused of murder. Like you couldn't go to, you couldn't go to work, right? Like you, you'd have some, you'd have people coming in there all the time to, to harass you. Yeah. Lucky lose. Yeah. No, that would be really challenging.
Starting point is 00:50:59 Interesting. Yeah. Okay. we then go to annalise's kitchen where ophelia and ak are eating well annalise is eating mom's cooking annalise is eating her mom's chicken and drinking vodka they're talking about the case ophelia has this whole thing about like not believing women are capable of rape yeah has this like line of like women are made to give love nature protect that's women and like men are men just take things and Annalise laughs a bit and they kind of like get into this back and forth of
Starting point is 00:51:38 you know Annalise is oh your definition of a woman like I've never nurtured anything and then she throws at her mom being like have you right and they go back and forth it gets it gets heated really quick and Annalise slams the table and says mama did you know did you know what he did to me and she responds with uncle Clyde is dead which again this is like this is really heavy exposition but I love that they're giving it to us without overwriting it yeah for sure you know it's it's asking the audience to do like a bit of work for for you know a network tv show for like a 10 p.m network tv show where it's like so often in television you know you over explain things yeah for sure and i love that our show oftentimes did not do that and this this is a
Starting point is 00:52:28 great example where it's like two titan actors and you're getting so much information without it being like hammered over your head yeah it's incredible just an incredible scene incredible scene like so so good yeah and annalise has this so you knew and throws the glass against the wall side note for like a production thing those glasses that's not a real glass like it would be made out of like sugar so it looks like a glass but then you like throw it and like easily explodes and there's no harm to be had she leaves ophelia chases her out annalise explains how sam understood her immediately when she like went to him as a patient you know this trauma of of this thing that happened with uncle Clyde explains you know
Starting point is 00:53:22 Sam said it explains why she is the way she is and then Ophelia hits her back with this your aunt Lynn was got out Reverend Daniels got me after choir practice the first man I worked for some of the men I dated I told you men take things they've been taking things from women since the beginning of time which i i mean just really awful like intense generational trauma totally sort of being expressed here and then annalise tells her to go i don't need you like this is a devastating scene yeah yeah it's interesting right it's like we're seeing them yeah like you said the effects of the generational trauma of like patriarchy you know and and them both you know dealing with it and processing it through the worldviews that they like have access
Starting point is 00:54:13 to like Ophelia processing it through this lens of kind of like gender essentialism women are good meant to be nurturers men are bad meant to be takers and Viola or Annalise having a little more nuanced take and right I think every generation we get more tools and more understanding to be able to deal with those things and I feel like you know it seems like the trigger for Annalise is her mom minimizing this thing and a way of minimizing it and normalizing it is is kind of being like this is just the world this is just what happens you basically have to like pick up the pieces and keep moving right which like for you know under supported multiply marginalized marginalized people you know especially in ophelia's generation where you know they i'm
Starting point is 00:55:02 sure did not have the resources to be able to get the support and to stop right and to take time to heal it was you know she's doing the best she can there but it's obviously deeply painful for annalise you know and it's hard it's hard to watch them missing each other here that's an effect of the patriarchy too right where it's like they're they're fighting each other because they have both been victims of of patriarchy yeah it's it's really is really that that generational thing too was really tough for me to watch of just ophelia being like this is the way it is yeah you know just really really really awful yeah and they're both so good they're both so effective in this scene, obviously.
Starting point is 00:55:50 It's so great, yeah. All right, we go from there to court hallway where Asher is doing legal work, which I like seeing because we don't often see Asher doing legal work. He did some snooping about the plaintiff and discovered he visits the legal floor at the hospital. Why would he be doing that?
Starting point is 00:56:06 Bonnie pieces some things together and asks if Hacker Boy is home. We go to court. Bonnie has a plan. She says she wants the hospital's lawyer to go on record in the courtroom. agreeing to the settlement. So he stands up, says that he's on record as agreeing to this settlement of $500,000. And Bonnie then turns to the court and says, I want you all to know that
Starting point is 00:56:29 he's just gone on record to paying himself half of that $500,000 because he is in fact the boyfriend lover of Mr. Manning, the plaintiff, which she then gives the court illegally obtained text messages and emails with like no chain of custody wow this is not admissible to court this is this is tv magic for sure but i guess the idea maybe is just like get it thrown out right where yeah the the judge looks at everything i mean the lawyer the hospital lawyer is like these are my private rightfully so it's like this is my private correspondence like what is going on and then the judge just kind of like looks through it and his turns to the prosecution and it's like do you have something you want to say and they're like yeah we're dismissing the charges and i'm
Starting point is 00:57:21 like hang on right right also yeah the law officers of annalise kidding will be fucked without oliver what do they do before him and his illegal hacking i wonder look you don't need you don't need to twist my arm i i i am fighting people in the reddit comments i think i think annalise is not the best at her job i think i'm not sure i'm hiring the keating law firm she gives a great speech she's so good i mean she's uh she's a she gives a speech the way viola davis is an actor right yeah that's right it's like you can just hire yeah hire viola davis to you know do your dear courtroom arguments that's right yeah even if it's bad arguments yeah exactly
Starting point is 00:58:05 comment me at the comments I think Annalise is bad at her job also I love that Viola came at me in the comments it's so funny yeah she came at me in the comments
Starting point is 00:58:14 being like what the hell are you talking about of course Annalise is good at her job that's really funny I didn't I didn't see that
Starting point is 00:58:20 like I can't argue with Viola I'm not ready for that I can't take that smoke that's so funny this is the one that she reposted though yeah
Starting point is 00:58:29 yeah yeah it's really funny she was laughing she's like and she like called her like You know, I think she called her mentally ill, Annalise. But, you know, is she good at her job?
Starting point is 00:58:42 Viola seems to think so. Do I? I don't know. Sure. We then go to the car park where Asher is gassing up Bonnie. And, you know, he has this whole, like, Muhammad Ali thing. It's really good. It's such good work from you.
Starting point is 00:58:55 And then you guys kiss. I'd forgotten about this so much. Yeah. She, like, shoves you against the hood of a car. It's steamy. Right. Yeah. which i really like too because the last time we saw them together was this like awkward kind
Starting point is 00:59:07 of like bumbling no music and now you get like this like really yeah really hot sort of scene for them totally i like also that he asks he's like are we are you sure this is not you just feeling like pathetic and desperate yeah like it's a little like check-in and like boundary from him you know where he's like he's like i don't know if i want to do it again if that's you know if that's where if that's the vibe yeah that's what's happening also frank's watching oh my god this is so funny the look on his face we like we like pan or cut over to like frank watching and i'm like what are you doing you you pervert what is what is frank what why is frank watching bonnie and asher hook up i don't know he has eyes i'm gonna go yeah i get that he's like i don't know he's
Starting point is 00:59:57 keeping tabs on everyone i'm also imagining him like how many parking spots he had to go into to find the perfect one where his rearview mirror lines up with like asher oh my god he's like waiting for a guy to pull out he's like on his phone he's like hurry up yeah yeah are you leaving yeah yeah go on yeah i hate this spot all right we then go to the bar where connor is going to introduce laurel mckayla and west to oliver and as oliver's walking up he goes oh and i have a drug problem to you know get them in on the lie oliver walks up they're all very welcoming this is like a cute this is like a nice like fun yeah i i can't believe this is the time the first time that
Starting point is 01:00:44 they're all together well it had to be i mean conrad's doing the king and i get it but i get he's like this season one i know i know i know but he's like literally he's like literally in la for two days to film and so yeah it probably it probably like even just from a scheduling perspective took a while to figure out how to you know get him in a scene with everyone totally rebecca has called wes and wes lies to her saying that he's like busy with this casework laurel overhears the lie and goes ah the library lie i use that one with con sometimes and west tells her that rebecca lied he he got rudy's arrest report it wasn't a nervous breakdown it was a drug overdose the night it happened was the same night as lila's murder yeah yeah so
Starting point is 01:01:36 this is and then west has this what if i was wrong what if she did it nate's in jail right now what if i was wrong about it the whole time i mean it's like his he's he elfie is so good in the scene yeah yeah it totally is so is this kind of the first time i mean i i forgot that it took so long for for oliver to meet the the rest of the crew because you know we had so many subsequent seasons where he was like fully integrated with all of us but was this also was he i'm trying to think in the actual friend group at the time like a lot of friendship is built you know like when you're working together in the time between scenes and stuff was conrad sort of like in the friend group with everyone else at this point or was it more like really beginning kind of now you mean
Starting point is 01:02:23 in our real life yeah in real life no he wasn't around right so he wasn't right right conrad and i like barely knew each other really at that point well i mean think about it like he would literally come in for like 48 hours yeah yeah i get i guess so yeah you know we'd spend like two days together an episode but like conrad and i didn't like our our you know friendship didn't really blossom or any of us until he like relocated to los angeles right did we did he know do you think that like the intention was to have him there in subsequent seasons no at this point no okay yeah i don't think so i don't think he had been elevated to series regular because they wouldn't right like they they would they would only elevate you to series regular at the end of the season
Starting point is 01:03:10 so that you didn't have like negotiation power for you know episodes right i guess so i mean unless they knew they wanted you earlier i don't know i mean i we could find like the press release i'm sure but i kind of get i i kind of think that conrad didn't know i kind of think he found out like on hiatus interesting yeah and then also when you're another actor too and you're like working with someone who you're not sure if they're gonna they're gonna be around it is different than when you're like oh this person's gonna be you know my scene partner for the next you know five years yeah is very different than oh this person's here for this episode and you know we're gonna have friendly interaction but you're not necessarily building something you
Starting point is 01:03:56 know in quite the same way well i mean the he was doing a show with my high school friend so like we had we had like you know he was doing the king and i playing ashley parks right love interest who i did high school theater with so like we had connective tissue like we knew uh people yeah or we or we shared friends so there was there was sort of that like community buy-in but like it just wasn't the sheer number of hours i was spending with like you yeah asia carla totally healthy. Yeah, that makes sense. Okay. So we go from Wes crashing out to Annalise's bedroom. Ophelia is leaving, but she puts Annalise on the ground between her knees and she begins combing her hair. It's just like very beautiful and intimate. And Ophelia then goes into this
Starting point is 01:04:45 long monologue about buying their house, how proud of it she was, the porch swing, the old stove, the long matches she used to light that stove with, and then talked about how one winter Uncle Clyde came by and needed a place to stay. Ophelia woke up in the middle of the night. She didn't know why. She just sort of woke up and saw Uncle Clyde coming out of Annalise's bedroom, and she knew what he had done. And then one night, not long after that, Ophelia got the kids out of bed and got them across the street to their aunt's house or something, a friend's house. And she used a long one of those long matches and some very flammable hooch to burn down the house with uncle Clyde inside yeah and we yeah we see as you know it's it's kind of a cool moment where like as
Starting point is 01:05:37 the they've written this so well the the construction of the monologue we're like you don't really know where it's going and then once you start to realize where it's going we're seeing that recognition go across viola's face as well like in tandem with us as the audience of like holy shit yeah ophelia killed uncle claude the the bad guy yeah the abuser yeah it was right so powerful i was i was definitely crying here and just uh yeah the moment of like connection and love between them you know like seeing what her mother did and like again like this generational thing many times of her mother just being like i did what i had to do and and i'm moving on you know from it like there's no time or space to stop um also i i just looked it up because i had
Starting point is 01:06:34 forgotten this but cicely tyson was nominated five times for emmys for how to get with murder for guest appearances um which at the time was the record five times five times yeah yeah i mean makes sense you know and i'm yeah i'm excited to see even like the later seasons that i you know didn't watch i'm excited to see her her work in those you know dude she got she got nominated five times more than both of us combined that's true true it's very true understandably yeah but yeah wow yeah holy toledo yeah yeah it sort of ends with like yeah this beautiful reaction from annalise and she she grabs ophelia's arms and wraps them around her neck and they're just like embracing and crying and it's unreal yeah we then
Starting point is 01:07:28 go to coliver's bedroom oliver is drunk and wants to have sex with connor but connor won't he wants to have sex when they're sober which is nice and connor as connor is exiting the apartment oliver says i love you uh which that was crazy yeah big step in coliver world big step in coliver world also i it kind of like dawned on me and i'm curious because i don't remember i'm curious to see how this play plays out, but it would be so exhausting to be lying to your partner all the time. Yeah. Like even just, even just like a simple, like not simple, but like saying that you're an addict and like having to be like, pretend to be an addict. I mean, forget, forget even like the murder, but like even just something as less nuanced as that, I'm like, it would be
Starting point is 01:08:24 so exhausting and so draining to just constantly be lying to the person that you care and look for and so many people do that i can't believe people i could i'm not i'm not as you know i am not built for it me neither i would self-destruct yeah i would self-destruct yeah yikes okay we then go to laurel and west are pretending to be a husband and wife for sure the yeah at the behavioral old hospital reno walters she has a fake id yeah where the fuck did they get fake id the west village she went to the west village that's where people got it in my day i used to that's so funny you say that i i'm pretty sure when i was in college i went to some shady apartment in oh wow i think like around the west village and this guy just had me like you know he like photographed me
Starting point is 01:09:19 had the printer the whole thing that's so funny why the west village also i mean it's just a funny like it's where all criminals used to live and now they're priced now they're priced out truly i mean yeah i was like yeah no one no one is making a living making fake ids is doing that in the west no more yeah no definitely not also i'm being curious like can you still get like can people still make fake ids or is the technology too good now to like yeah i wonder chime in in the comments i remember in college actually having a fake id and trying to go to this bar and this guy the bouncer recognized the fake id and took it from me and offered to sell it back to me and that part that's crazy pissed me off that is crazy what an incredible hustle by that
Starting point is 01:10:09 guy yeah i think i maybe called uh his place of employment and told him that um because i was so pissed off so you got him maybe fired i don't know i got mine i got mine taken from me at trader joe's wine shop wow because i had like been using it for years and it was just like hubris where i went in and i was like this is fine and then they they scanned it yeah uh and they were like this is fake and i was like no it's not they're like look you can leave or we'll call the police and i was like okay bye yeah i'll have to rethink the ethics of that too but i i definitely obviously i wouldn't i wouldn't have to like to stand on if he didn't offer to sell it back to me that part was like fucked up and he was like off and i was like hmm yeah i like that he did i like
Starting point is 01:10:53 that he did that yeah he was kind of a prick i was not i was not yeah but totally i'll have to think no i'm not i'm on your side but i like that hustle before i'll have to think about okay anyway she has a fake id that looks like she i don't know she got maybe maybe frank made it i guess that's rick's hustle is he's selling middleton students i love that i can see that for sure all of the fake addresses are just different names of pasta rigatoni way that's right that's right yeah yeah we have yeah exactly milky milky way yeah you'll keep all right we we then go to nate's arraignment michaela is hiding in the back and lease comes in catching her michaela then asked how are we supposed to be okay with this he's innocent
Starting point is 01:11:43 and black annalise basically says this isn't your job to fix it's mine yeah and then we go to rudy you have visitors rudy seems not great he seems not doing well we see the scratches on the wall yay we get it but seriously how healthy do your nails have to be in order to be able to so i mean so healthy like just scratch through like drywall i mean this guy was definitely like getting on instagram getting like those like biotin gummies you know yeah 100 yeah i i don't condone the use of biotin i don't think yeah i don't know that yeah all right then we go to the interrogation room where annalise comes in and calling it a liar is why did is this why is that why you did it because you got fired looking into sam or did you do it for me because you love me
Starting point is 01:12:40 and you didn't want to see another man with me either way thank you that bastard deserved to die like we get a little insert of the security camera so yeah you know for me i'm like oh she's performing for the cameras right and then she like i didn't even catch it it happened so quickly but i guess she like grabs his hand or something and she slips him a piece of paper that says fire your lawyer and call this number yeah i also didn't catch her when she would have done yeah i don't know when she did it then we go back to wes and laurel with rudy wes brings they're trying to like get him to talk uh and then wes finally brings up a photo of rebecca shows it to rudy and rudy says wet uh sort of quietly and then he says it again and again he gets louder and then said you know
Starting point is 01:13:23 they finally understand what he's saying wet and wes says the water tank uh but he was just talking about the slip and slide earlier that's right that's right he wasn't talking about the water right so we're thinking he's talking about about rebecca being wet i guess that's what they think that's what that's what west thinks right i have no opinion on the matter because i i i i fully forgot this storyline yeah yeah no of course i don't know i do not i don't remember i mean obviously i wasn't there so again memory but like i don't i don't remember anything about this i don't remember i honestly i don't even really remember this like storyline of like wes not trusting rebecca yeah i also don't remember the thing with annalee's giving
Starting point is 01:14:11 nate like a number like fire fire lawyer and call this number like does she admit right that she i don't know him locked up i mean if so and he forgives her i don't know i don't know man yeah dude uh the nate and annalee's relationship i cannot support i can't do it i can't do it so toxic it's so toxic man it's so bad yeah we need to sit down with detective nate lahey we need to do couples therapy for them yeah yeah just like what are you guys doing yeah sam's dead body would be doing a couple's therapy it's dark yeah we quickly cut to a insert of a laptop and wes's phone is being tracked and then we pull out to reveal that it is rebecca tracking wes which that is an incredible way to end the episode yeah yeah early air tag
Starting point is 01:15:19 early air tag i guess yeah totally it is it is wild why was she tracking i don't know i guess we'll find out yeah i don't know man i'm excited to have katie back on because it's funny us or me us not remembering a lot of this but like obviously katie will remember all of it vividly because of their time on the show so yeah i'm i'm very excited to to bring bring them back on and and get that perspective okay great episode i mean cicely tyson incredible just like knocked out of the park five emmy nominations sure yeah and i'm trying to remember how old she was like when she started on how to get away i think if i remember correctly too she was like she was lying about her age what do you mean i think if i remember correctly
Starting point is 01:16:17 i remember i think viola saying oh she tells people she's 89 but she's like 94 or something oh like it was like a it was like a it was kind of like a cute lie like it was only like a couple years you know i have to i would have to do the math but like i can't remember what age she was This article I'm seeing says, on IMDb, says if she triumphs, I guess this is in her fifth nomination, she triumphs at 95, she'll be the oldest winner in this category. So, that would mean that she was maybe 90 when she started on How to Get Away. I think that's right. And I think, maybe if I recall correctly, she told people she was 80 or like 85. Uh-huh, uh-huh.
Starting point is 01:17:05 Which, she can do whatever she wants. Sure. You know? Yeah. Anyway, she's sensational. She just knocked it out of the park. I love seeing her and Viola get to work together. And I think like, you know, like Cicely, Viola has talked many times about how impactful Cicely's journey as an actress was in inspiring Viola in becoming an actress and like seeing that it was possible as a woman of color.
Starting point is 01:17:35 Totally. yeah I think just like my heart leaps seeing like this full circle moment for for Viola to just get to like work with this person that has had such a monumental impact on you becoming the artist that you are yeah and I'm sure Cicely being like proud and you know all the things of the woman and actress that viola was and yeah absolutely yeah i'm just like looking up i'm like looking at violet or uh let's just be tyson right now just online too and just being like she was married to miles davis yeah yeah dude wow so many yeah yeah she had a life yeah yeah she passed away at 96 so it was the year after i guess rest in peace yeah after her fifth nomination i'm seeing her
Starting point is 01:18:33 that she said that viola davis uh made her feel loved and seen and valued yeah and gave her permission to dream which i really love it's really beautiful that's awesome yeah really cool we got a chance to to be in the same room with her and i got to hump the air in front of her oh my days what a weird job we have all right we're gonna end here but let's guess the next line the at the title of next episode it is the night lila died oh boy could literally that could literally be anyone yeah except for lila why do i feel like it's like some random person who's like presenting i don't know i'm gonna say nate okay interesting yeah i'm gonna say nate i'm gonna say rebecca
