A Strativarius is one of the string instruments, such as violins, violins, violins, violas, cellos, and guitars, crafted by members of the Sradivari family, particularly Antonio Sradivari and Cremona, Italy during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Starting point is 00:01:53 These instruments are known for their craftsmanship, tonal quality, and lasting legacy, and are considered some of the finest ever made. Sradivari's violins in particular are coveted by musicians and collectors, with many selling for millions of dollars. Antonio Sradivari made over 1,100 instruments, with approximately 650 surviving today. The exact methods Sardivari used to produce the instruments famed sound remain unknown, with theories ranging from the unique quality of the wood used during the Little Ice Age to the varnishes and chemical treatments applied. Despite extensive scientific research, including modern acoustic analysis and CT scans,
Starting point is 00:02:49 no one has been able to conclusively replicate or fully explain the tonal qualities of stratovarious instruments. The reputation of stratovarious instruments for having unmatched sound quality has been debated. Blind experiments conducted from the 19th century to the present have often found no significant difference between Stradivari violins and high-quality modern violins. These findings have led some to question the objectivity of the instrument's legendary status. Strativarius instruments are still played by leading musicians and housed in museums worldwide, such as the Museo del Violino and Cremona, which preserves several. several Stradivarius instruments. Initiatives like the Stradivarius Sound Bank have aimed to digitally capture and preserve the sounds of these instruments for future generations.
Starting point is 00:03:51 Stradivarius instruments have become known in popular culture, appearing in fiction and representing elite musical artistry. Stradivari made his instruments using an inner form, unlike the French copious, such as William, who employed an outer form. It is clear from the number of forms throughout his career that he experimented with some of the dimensions of his instruments. The woods used included spruce for the top, willow for the internal blocks and linings, and maple for the back, ribs, and neck. Stradivari's sound is described as direct and precise, responding to the slightest touch with refined direction and elegance. There has been conjectures that the wood used may have been treated with several types of minerals, both before and after the construction of a violin. Scientists at National Taiwan University have detected trace amounts of aluminum,
Starting point is 00:05:02 copper, and calcium in wood for stradivari violins. The traces may have come from chemical preservations applied by loggers to the wood they sold. As well, the violin makers applied varnishes to the varnishes to the wood. their instruments. Potassium borate borax may have been used to protect against woodworm. Sodium and potassium silicate may have been used to prevent mildew, rotting, and insect damage. Simone Fernando Saccone suggested that Vernice Bianca and egg tempera varnish, composed of gum, Arabic, honey, and egg white, may have been used. French chemist Jean-Philippe-Chi and his co-workers have studied varnishes on Stradivarius violins.
Starting point is 00:05:57 He reported in 2010 that even when varnish is no longer visible to the human eye on the surface of older violins, it can be detected within the top layers of cells. A lower layer of varnish is found within the topmost wood cells, while an upper layer rests upon the wood. Hachar's finding suggests that Stradivar's, used a mixture of common cremonese resin, oil, and pigment as a varnish, rather than making his own. A share did not find traces of specialized ingredients such as protein materials,
Starting point is 00:06:38 gums, or fossil amber. A comparative study published in P-L-O-S-1 in 2008 found no significant differences in median densities between modern and classical violins or between classical violins from different origins. Instead, the survey of several modern and classical examples of violins highlighted a notable distinction when comparing density differentials. These results suggest that differences in density differentials in the material may have played a significant role in the sound production of classical violins.

A strativarius made in the 1680s, or during Stradivari's long pattern period from 1690 to 1700, could be worth hundreds of thousands to several million U.S. dollars at today's prices.
Starting point is 00:08:08 The 1697 Molitor Stavarius, once rumored to have belonged to Napoleon, it actually belonged to a general in his army, Marshal Gabriel Jean-Josef Molitor, sold in 2010 at Torizio Auctions to violinist in Aikiko Myers, for $3.6 million, at the time of world record. depending on condition, instruments made during Stradivari's golden period from 1700 to about 1725 can be worth millions of dollars. In 2011, his Lady Blunt Violin from 1721, which is in pristine condition, was sold in London for $15.9 million. It is named after Lord Byron's granddaughter, Lady Anne Blund, who owned it for 30 years.
Starting point is 00:09:07 It was sold by the Nippon Music Foundation and aid of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami appeal. In spring 2014, the McDonald Viola was put up for auction through the musical instrument auction house, Ingalls and Hayday, in conjunction with the Sotheby's, via silent auction with a minimum bid of $45 million. The auction failed to reach its minimum bid by June 25, 2014, and the viola was not sold. Vice Magazine reported in May 2013 that in recent years, Stradivarius investment funds have started to appear, pushing already astronomical prices even higher. Stradivarius instruments are at a risk of theft. Stolen instruments are often recovered, even after being missing for many years.
Starting point is 00:10:05 They are difficult to sell illicitly, as dealers will typically call the police if approached by a seller with a Stradivarius known to have been stolen. The General Kidd Stradivarius was stolen in 2004. It was returned three weeks later by a woman who found it and handed it over to the police. The Zinsheimer Islam was stolen in Henover, Germany in 2008, and recovered in 2009. The Lipinski Stradivarius was stolen. stolen in an armed robbery on January 27, 2014, and subsequently recovered. The Ames Stradivarius was stolen in 1981 and recovered in 2015.
Starting point is 00:10:55 Several stolen instruments remain missing, such as the Karpalowski, stolen in 1953, the Davidoff Morini stolen in 1995, and the Lemorrian stolen in 2002. The Stradivarius instruments are famous for the quality of sound they produce. However, the many blind experiments from 1817 to as recent as 2014 have never found any difference in sound between Stradivari's violins and high-quality violins and comparable style of other makers and periods. In a particularly famous test on a BBC Radio 3 program in 1977, the violinist Isaac Stern and Pincas Zuckerman
Starting point is 00:11:46 and the violin expert and dealer, Charles Beer, tried to distinguish between the Chacon Stradivarius, a 1739 Guarneri del Jesu, and 1846 Vuyom, and a 1976 British violin played behind a screen by a professional soloist. The two violinists were allowed to play all the instruments first. None of the listeners identified more than two of the four instruments.
Starting point is 00:12:19 Two of the listeners identified the 20th century violin as a strativarius. Violinists and others have criticized these tests on various grounds, such as that they are not double-blind in most cases. The judges are often not experts, and the sounds of violins are hard to evaluate objectively and reproducibly. In a test in 2009, the British violinist Matthew Truessler played his 1711 Stradivarius, said to be worth $2 million, US, and four modern violins made by the Swiss violin maker, Michael Ronheimer.
Starting point is 00:13:02 One of Ronheimer's violins made with wood that the Swiss Federal Laboratories for materials, science, and technology researcher Francis Schwartz had treated with fungi, received 90 of the 180 votes for the best tone, while the Stradivarius came second with 39 votes. The majority, 113 of the listeners, misidentified the winning violin as the Strativarius. Analysis of the treated wood revealed a reduction in density, accompanied by relatively little change in the speed of sound.
Starting point is 00:13:41 According to this analysis, treatment improves the sound radiation ratio to the level of cold climate would, considered to have superior resonance. In a double blind test in 2012, published in the study, player preferences among new and old violins, expert players could not distinguish old from new instruments by playing them for a short time in a small room. In an additional test performed in a concert hall,
Starting point is 00:14:14 one of the Strativarius violins placed first, but one of the participants stated that the audience in the concert hall were essentially equivocal on which instruments were better in each of the pair-wise instrument comparisons, and I could tell slight differences in the instruments, but overall they were all great. None of them sounded substantially weaker than the others. Modern violins were rated as having better sound-carrying qualities
Starting point is 00:14:43 and were preferred again in a study in 2017. While many world-class soloists play violins by Antonios Radevary, there are notable exceptions. For example, Christian Tetzlav formerly played a quite famous strad, but switched to a violin made in 2002 by Stefan Peter Greiner. He states that the listener cannot tell that his instrument is modern, and he regards it as excellent for Bach and better than a Stradivarius for the big romantic and 20th century concertos. Some maintain that the very best Stradivari have unique superiority.
Starting point is 00:15:31 Various attempts at explaining these supposed qualities have been undertaken, most results being unsuccessful or inconclusive. Over the centuries, numerous theories have been presented and debunked, including an assertion that the wood was salvaged from old cathedrals. A more modern theory attributes tree growth during a time of global low temperatures, during the little ice age, associated with unusually low solar activity of the Mondur minimum, circa 1645 to 1750, during which cooler temperatures throughout Europe are believed to have caused stunted and slowed tree growth,
Starting point is 00:16:16 resulting in unusually dense wood. Further evidence of this little ice age theory comes from a simple examination of the dense growth rings in the wood used in stratovarious instruments. Two researchers, University of Tennessee tree ring scientists, Henri Grisino-Mayer, and Lloyd Burkle, a Columbia University climatologist, published their conclusions supporting the theory on increased wood density. in the journal Dendrochronology. In 2008, researchers from the Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands announced further evidence that wood density caused the claimed high quality of these instruments. After examining the violins with x-rays,
Starting point is 00:17:11 the researchers found that these violins all had extremely consistent density, with relatively low variation in the apparent growth patterns of the trees. that produced this wood. Yet, another possible explanation is that the maple wood used was sourced from the forests of northern Croatia. This wood is known for its extreme density, resulting from the slow growth caused by harsh Croatian winters. Croatian wood was traded by Venetian merchants of the era, and is still used today by local lootiers and craftsfolk for musical instruments. Some research points to wood preservatives used in that day as contributing to the resonant qualities.
Starting point is 00:18:04 Joseph Najvary reveals that he has always held to believe that there are a wide range of chemicals that will improve the violin sound. In a 2009 study co-authored with Reynolds Guillomet and Clifford Spiegelman, Najvari obtained shavings from a Strativarius violin and examine them. An analysis indicated they contained borax, fluorides, chromium, and iron salts. He also found that the wood had decayed a little, to the extent that the filter plates and the pores between the wood's component tracheids had rotted away. Perhaps while the wood was stored in or underwater in the Venice Lagoon, before Stradivarius used it. Stephen Sir, a radiologist, worked with researchers to perform a CTC, scan of a stradivari known as the beds.
Starting point is 00:19:05 Data regarding the differing densities of woods used were then used to create a reproduction instrument. Stradivari made mainly violins, but also violas, cellos, and some plucked string instruments. Five guitars, two mandolins, and one harp are known. About 650 original strativarius instruments have survived. thousands of violins have been made in tribute to Stradivari, copying his model and bearing labels that read Stradivarius. The presence of a Strativarius label does not confirm
Starting point is 00:19:49 that the instrument is a genuine work of Strativari. The Museo de Violino in Cremona, Italy, embarked on a project to preserve the sound of Strativarius instruments. In January 2019, four musicians recorded scales and arpeggios using two violins, a viola and a cello, including a famous 1727 viola named Pasuvio. These recordings, known as the Strativarius Sound Bank, preserve the sounds. The project involved closing off streets and minimizing noise to ensure a quiet environment during the recordings. The musicians recorded over one million sound files across different
Starting point is 00:20:42 techniques to capture the instrument's tonal characteristics. These recordings are stored as part of a permanent collection at the Museum del Violino. Fausto Cacciatore, curator of the museum, emphasized that while the sounds of these instruments change over time due to natural aging, the project will allow future generations to experience the original sound of these strativarius instruments. Antonio Stradivari, circa 64 to the 18th of December 1737, was an Italian luteer and a craftsman of string instruments, such as violins, cellos, guitars, violas, and harps.
Starting point is 00:21:36 The Latinized form of his surname Stradivarius, as well as the colloquial strad, are terms often used to refer to his instruments. It is estimated that Stradivari produced 1,116 instruments, of which 960 were violins. Around 650 instruments survive, including 450 to 512 violins. His instruments are considered some of the finest ever made, and are extremely valuable collector's items.
Starting point is 00:22:18 Antonio Stradivari's birth date presumably between 1644 and 1649, has been debated amongst historians due to the numerous inconsistencies in the evidence of the latter. The 1668 and 1678 censuses report him actually growing younger. A fact explained by the probable loss of statistics from 1647 to 1649, when renewed belligerency between France's Modenaise and Spain's Milanese proxies, led to a flow of refugees and included Stradivari's mother.
Starting point is 00:23:02 Stradivari's ancestry consisted of notable citizens of Cremona, dating back to at least the 12th or 13th century. The earliest mention of the family name, or a variation upon it, is in a land grant dating from 1188. The origin of the name itself has several possible explanations. Some sources say it is the plural of Stradivare, essentially meaning toll man, in Lombard, while others say that the form de Strat Averta derives from Strada Averta, which in Cremonet's dialect means open road.
Starting point is 00:23:49 Antonio's parents were Alessandro Stradivari, son of Giulio Cesaré stradivari, and Anna Moroni, daughter of Leonardo Moroni. They married on the 30th of August, 1622, and had at least three children between 1623 and 1628. Giuseppe Giulio Chesare, Carlo Felice, and Giovanni Battista. The baptismal records of the parish of Es Prospero then stop, and it is unknown whether they had any children. children from 1628 to 1644. This gap in the records may be due to the family leaving Cremona in response to war, famine, and plague in the city, from 1628 to 1630. Or the records may have been lost due to clerical reforms imposed by Joseph II of Austria in 1788. The latter explanation
Starting point is 00:24:58 is supported by the word Cremoninsis or Cremona on many of Strymone. Sardivari's labels, which suggests that he was born in the city instead of merely moving back there to work. Antonio was born in 1644, a fact deducible from later violins. However, there are no records or information available in his early childhood, and the first evidence of his presence in Cremona is the label of his oldest surviving violin from 1666. Stradivari likely began an apprenticeship with Niccolo Amari between the ages of 12 and 14, although a minor debate surrounds this fact. One of the few pieces of evidence supporting this is the label of his 1666 violin, which reads, Alumnus Nikolai Amadi, Pachibat Anno, 1666.
Starting point is 00:26:03 However, Stradivari did not repeatedly put Amati's name on his labels, unlike many of Amari's other students. Stradivari's early violins actually bear less resemblance to Amaris than his later instruments do. M. Charnot Chardon, a well-known French luteer, asserted that his father had a label of Stradivari's dating, made at the age of 13 in the workshop of Niccolo Amari. This label has never been found or confirmed. Amati would also have been a logical choice for Antonio's parents, as he represented an old family of violin makers in Cremona, and was far superior to most other Luteers in Italy. Some researchers believe there is a closer educational association between Antonio Stradivari and Francesco Ruggieri than has previously been recognized.
Starting point is 00:27:08 Despite the long-held belief that Antonio Stradivari was the pupil of Niccolo Amati, there are important discrepancies between their work. Some researchers believe early instruments by Stradivari bear a strong resemblance to Francesco Ruggieri's work than Amati's. Additionally, the utilization of a small dorsal pin or small hole invariably used not just by Nico. al-A-Mari, but also of his recognized pupils, but not used by Antonio Sradivari, adds further evidence that Stradivari may not have learned his craft from Amadi. This pin or hole was fundamental in the graduation of the thickness of the plates, and was a technique passed on through generations of pupils of the Amari.
Starting point is 00:28:07 This dorsal pin is also not found in any of the instruments of the Rujeri family. suggesting Antonio Stradivari may have actually learned his craft from Francesco Ruggieri, both of them having been influenced by Amari. W.E. Hill and sons concede that they fail to find the hand of Stradiwari in any of Niccolo Amari's work. Although the unmistakable hands of Andrea Guarneri and Francesco Ruggieri are evident, An alternative theory is that Stradivari started out as a woodworker. The house he lived in from 1667 to 1680 was owned by Francesco Pescaraoli, a woodcarver and inlayer. Stradivari may even have been employed to decorate some of Amati's instruments without being a true apprentice.
Starting point is 00:29:05 This theory is supported by some of Stardivari's later violins, which have elaborated. decorations and perfling. Assuming that Sradivari was a student of Amari, he would have begun his apprenticeship in 1656 to 58, and produced his first decent instrument in 1660 at the age of 16. His first labels were printed from 1660 to 1665, which indicates that his work had sufficient quality to be offered directly to his patrons. However, he probably stayed in Amade's workshop until about 1684, using his master's reputation as a launching point for his career. Sardivari probably developed his own style slowly.
Starting point is 00:30:03 Some of his early violins were smaller, with notable exception to this is the 1679 earlier violin, which had much larger proportions. Stradivari's early pre-1684 violins are in strong contrast to Amadi's instruments from the same time period. Stradivari's had a stronger build, less rounded curves, with the perfling set farther in. By 1680, Stradivari had acquired at least a small yet growing reputation. In 1682, a Venetian banker ordered a complete set of instruments, which he planned to present to King James II of England. The fate of these instruments is unknown.
Starting point is 00:30:54 Cosima III de Medici bought another five years later. Amadi died in 1684, an event followed by a noticeable increase in Stradivari's production. The year 1684 and 1685 also marked an important development in his style, the dimensions he used generally increased, and his instruments were more in the style of Amati's work of the 1640s and 1650s. Stradivari's instruments underwent no major change in the next five years, although in 1688 he began cutting a more distinct bevel and began outlining the heads of instruments in black,
Starting point is 00:31:41 a quite original improvement. Stradivari's relatively early success in his career may have allowed him to use a more experimental approach to violin building. In fact, Stradivari's early career is marked by wide experimentation, and his instruments during this period are generally considered of a lesser quality than his later work. However, the precision with which he carved the heads and inserted the perfling quickly marked him as one of the most dexterous craftsmen in the world. A prime example of this being the 1690 Tuscan violin. pre-1690 instruments are sometimes termed Amadizé, but this is not completely accurate.
Starting point is 00:32:34 It is largely because Tratavari created many more instruments later on, that people try to connect his early work with Amari's style. By 1680, Sarivari moved to No. 1 Piazza Roma, formerly No. 2 Piazza San Domenico. The house was just doors away from those of several. other violin-making families of Cremona, including the Amadis and Guarneri's. Stradivari probably worked in the loft and attic, and he lived in this house for the rest of his life. In the early 1690s, Tadavareemate made a pronounced departure from his earlier style of instrument-making, changing two key elements of its instruments. First, he began to make violins with a larger pattern than previous instruments.
Starting point is 00:33:32 These larger violins are usually known as long strads. He also switched to using a darker, richer varnish, as opposed to a yellower varnish similar to that used by Amadi. He continued to use this pattern until 1698, with few exceptions. Between 1698 and 1700, he abandoned the long strad model and returned to a slightly shorter model. which he used until his death. The period from 1700 to 1725 is often termed the golden period of his production. Instruments made during this time are usually considered of a higher quality than his earlier instruments. These instruments also fetch much higher prices than his other instruments,
Starting point is 00:34:28 and are especially prized by collectors. Late period instruments made from the late 1720s until his death in 1737 show signs of Stradivari's advancing age. These late instruments may be a bit less beautiful than the golden period instruments, but many nonetheless possess a fine tone. Heavier and looser craftsmanship of the late Stradivari output can be seen in the 1734 Abonek.
