Hello, Sunshine, I'm Maria.
And my name is Rory and we are the host of the IEL Speaking for Success podcast.
The podcast is the name is to help you improve your speaking skills as well as your listening skills along the way.
We started this podcast because we want you to use high-level vocabulary and gorgeous grammar
in your everyday life and in your IELD speaking exam.
We have a recording of our webinar with an ex-IELD examiner, Brandon.
Yay!
Rory, what were you doing when we were recording?
I have no excuses because I can't remember when you were recording.
When did you record?
Yeah, the webinar was last Saturday, actually.
It was a very good webinar.
I know what I was doing.
I was at a Shashdluck party.
Sorry about that.
Of course, yes.
Rory was having a barbecue party
and we were recording a super practical and useful webinar
with Brandon about IOTSSA.
Yeah, we have recording.
Go to SuccesswithIOS.com slash webinars.
us. Rory, how are you today?
Actually, I'm in a bit of a rush because I have a date soon.
What a coincidence, because we're going to be talking about being in a rush, being in a hurry.
Yes, in speaking part one, they can ask you questions about being in a hurry.
Oh my God, could we hurry up.
Rory, how often are you in a hurry?
Actually, I'm not usually in a rush. I usually have everything planned out quite clearly in my head
and I have everything prepared and ready to go
so I can afford to take life at a slower pace.
Maybe once or twice a year.
I'll be in like a real sort of scramble
to get things organised, but it's not often.
Do you like doing things quickly?
Well, if at all possible, yes.
Although some things require a more thorough approach
like, oh, doing the dishes, for example.
You want to do that quickly,
but if you do it too quickly,
then you might make a mistake
and then your dishes are disgusting.
So some things are more important to do more slowly than others, but generally I like to be quick.
What do you often do in a hurry?
I think things that are boring or things that are overly easy.
Like filing reports, for example, I just breeze through it just to get out of the road.
And if anyone has any questions about anything in the reports, then they can ask questions
and I'll clarify there and then after the fact.
When was the last time you did something in a hurry?
I think a few days ago I was in a bit of a rush to get ready for work actually
because I'd stayed in bed too long and I kind of lost track at the time
so I didn't have long to get the bus and actually if I'd missed the bus then
it would have been a very expensive taxi ride to work.
Do you like to finish things quickly?
If I have better things to be getting on with then yes.
I suppose, like, well, if you go back to the idea of filing reports, for example, you know, it's not super important to file reports, but it has to be done.
And then once that's done, then there's always something more important to be done, like getting ready for the podcast, for example.
What kind of things do you never do in a hurry?
anything where I'm paid to give high quality work or produce high quality work I should say
so anything like teaching for example or giving feedback I mean people pay a lot of money for
this so it's important that I spend a bit of time on it is it good to be always in a hurry
no not at all people need to chill out and remember that life isn't a race and they should
stress a lot less
It's not worth it.
Why do people make mistakes when they're in a hurry?
Well, probably because they're not paying attention.
They paint very broad strokes with whatever it is they're doing.
So they get 90% of what they want done just fine,
but then they've ignored 10% of it,
and sometimes that 10% can be quite important, so that's not good.
Rory, thank you very much for your answers.
That's okay. Can I go now?
No, could you stay, please, with us?
Yeah, let's go over the vacation.
So, we can say, like, I'm in a hurry. What are the synonyms? Can I say, like, I'm always in a rush?
Yeah, in a rush, in a hurry. Can I also say, like, I'm always on the go?
Well, you could, although that's got a slightly different meaning, I think, because if you're
always on the go, that just means that you're always doing things. But just because you're always
doing things doesn't mean you're in a hurry. You've used a nice one to breeze through it.
it like breeze, breeze through it.
So if you breeze through something, it's just that you, well, it's very easy for you to do
and easy to do quickly. So for example, I can breeze through my paperwork because I have
to do it all the time. It's still something I'd rather not do, but it's not too difficult
to do. Yeah, but we can also use rush as a verb, right? So I can say like, be in a rush,
but also like to rush around or to rush to work. Or rush through something.
Yeah, rush through something
Or I'm always rushing
Like I rush through my lunch
I rush through my breakfast
Do you sometimes rush through your breakfast?
No, not really
I take my time with my breakfast
Because I like it, it's my favorite meal of the day
No bananas, no raisins
No
Okay
All right
We can also say like
Do something fast
Or do something quickly
Or like
It was such a rush
Yes. You could talk about doing something at quite a fast pace as well.
Yeah. So do something at a fast pace and you've mentioned like at a slower pace.
Well, I take life at a slower pace or I try to.
And also you've mentioned like chill out. So also chill out is like take it easy.
Like do it at a slower pace like chill out.
Yes.
Roy, you've mentioned one word like scramble, I think you said.
Yes, if you scramble to do something there, it just means that you do it in a very chaotic and sort of disorganized way, because you're in a rush.
So it's kind of like a scrambled eggs?
Oh, what would you like to have for breakfast? Scramble eggs?
Scramble eggs are always a bit messy, aren't they?
Yeah, we need an example with the verb, scramble.
So, when I drop something, which is almost never, I scrambled to pick it up.
Nice. Yeah, Rory, you've mentioned doing the dishes and when you rush through washing the dishes, you can make a mistake. Yeah. So, you don't have a dishwasher.
Um, no, I'm single. Ha ha. That was a good joke, wasn't it?
Ha ha ha ha. Yes, now what are you listening? You should love.
Rory, maybe you should invest in a dishwasher and then, you know, save your time.
I don't need a dishwasher. I can wash dishes just fine.
Do you like it?
I don't like it, but I don't really have a problem washing the dishes.
I think other people do.
Maybe if you have a big family, but I don't, so it's fine.
So, kind of, Rory takes his time, he slows down,
and he does his dishes with like a thorough approach, you've mentioned.
Yeah, like a thorough approach.
Try to, whether people agree with that or not is not a matter entirely.
So washing the dishes requires a more thorough approach.
It means like careful, right?
Yes, well very careful, very diligent.
And you've also mentioned to file a report, file a report.
Yes, you usually file reports or paperwork.
It just means that you organize them in the right place.
And I liked it when you said, like life isn't a race.
Yeah, I think that's, well, it's a good thing to be able to say.
It's nice fixed expression, but it's also like good advice to live by.
It's not a race. You don't have to get there ahead of someone else.
Yeah, but usually, like, these days, like, people rush to get things done.
You know, they won't accomplish as much as they can.
They tend to hurry on the job, doing everything, like multitasking.
So what if they don't get everything done?
Just do it later.
Yeah, chill out. Do it later, alligator.
Yeah, and you've mentioned a nice phrase.
it's not worth it.
Yes, that's another expression, isn't it?
It's not worth it.
So here it's not worth it means it's not worth the stress, for example.
Or it's not worth getting upset or angry about.
Yeah, like if you go and take your iots and you got an 8.5 and you wanted a 7 and you got all upset,
it's a joke now.
Yeah, and you're getting upset.
and we tell you, oh, it's not worth it. Come on.
It's not worth it.
Stop being upset.
Rory, you've used the third conditional.
You actually managed to squeeze in the third conditional into your answer.
Wow, about the bus.
So what did you say?
What did I say about the bus?
Oh, yes, if I'd missed the bus, then I would have had to pay for a very expensive taxi.
Oh, my God.
So, dear listener, Rory was talking about the past, right?
so he didn't miss the bus and he's now speculating so if i had missed the bus but it's unreal
he actually caught the bus if i'd missed the bus i would have what i would have paid uh would
have had to pay oh i'd have had i'd have had to pay i would have had to pay it's crazy i'd have
had to pay.
Yeah.
So in this hypothetical
situation where I missed the boss
but I didn't.
If I did do that
then
taxi
service would be necessary
but it wasn't.
So it's very complicated grammar
and a very complicated idea.
Yeah but for this specific
situation it works well
because it's a specific
and like you are
imagining things
which didn't.
happen so it's very nice. Roy, do you think that today people have this hurry sickness all the
time? Sometimes I think so but I think more and more people are becoming wiser and more
aware that you don't have to do things like this and that is extremely nice to see because
it's better when people are calm. And what can we do to beat this hurry sickness?
just to go zen and quiet to chill out
take a breath and remember that you probably won't die
if you don't do everything that you wanted to in that one day
yeah life isn't a race it's not people need to relax
yeah certain things should be done certain things shouldn't be done
quickly passive voice that's all from us
thank you very much for listening we hope that you've learned
some nice phrases about being in a hurry. Rory, by the way, do you know how we can use podcasts
to boost our English skills? I have absolutely no idea, but I think you do. Yeah, because we have a
guide. Dear listener, you can download a guide on how to use podcasts and how to listen to podcast and how to
listen to podcast to boost your English skills. So you can download it for free. Click on the link in the
description to get the guide. And subscribe to our social media. And we have transcripts of all our

Thank you very much for listening. And remember, don't rush unless you're rushing to listen to our
podcast, then it's acceptable. Bye. Bye. Rory, how often are you in a hurry?
