Starting point is 00:00:30 Hello, lovely. I'm Maria. And I am 38-year-old Rory Fargus Duncan, and we are the host of the IEL Speaking for Success podcast. The podcast that aims to help you improve your speaking skills as well as your listening skills along the way. We've started this podcast to give you super grammar and fabulous vocabulary for your high IELS school. Your bad nine score. Wow, Rory, now you're 38 years old. Is it your real age? Do you know what?
Starting point is 00:01:02 We're going to need to do that again. I'm going to be 37. Whoops. He doesn't remember how old he is. Right, okay. One more time. Should we try again? No, no, I think it's perfect.
Starting point is 00:01:17 I think it is perfect. It's like, you know, the truth. You know, dear listener, we give you the truth. Well, unless I make a mistake, it's because I'm old. That's what it is. I'm not actually 38. I'm 37.
Starting point is 00:01:32 Well, when this episode goes out, I will be 37. At the moment, we're recording all of these in advance. I'm still 36. I'm still young, even though I can't read numbers on the screen. Right, do you listen, but Rory doesn't remember how old he's, but he's wearing really nice clothes today, Rory. Look at you, so stylish, wow. Like always.
Starting point is 00:01:58 Shall we talk about clothes? Let's talk about clothes. What kind of clothes do you like to wear? It depends on the context, to be honest. But normally I'm fine with a T-shirt and jeans. That's not terribly exciting, is it? Do you spend a lot of time choosing clothes? No, not at all.
Starting point is 00:02:23 Actually, I hate shopping for clothes. I think I must have been traumatized from the experience when I was younger, and it felt like when we did this, we were trying on clothes forever and it was so boring. So these days I just like to nip in, get what I need, which is pretty basic, make sure it fits in the changing rooms and then flee to something much more exciting. Do you like wearing t-shirts? Yeah, I think they're all I wear, unless I'm in a yoga class, and then I wear vests or tank tops. I think they just go with everything I wear. Although I only ever have black teas for the most
Starting point is 00:02:58 part, so that's pretty easy to mix and match with different things, isn't it? Unless it's something like a formal outfit. Do you prefer to wear comfortable casual clothes or smart clothes? I think it would be something casual for the most part and then it makes me stand out when I actually get dressed up properly. When I'm teaching, I'll wear smart clothes to make a good impression at first and then let my hair down a bit when things are up and running, at least in terms of my clothes. Okay, when I sell my business, I want the business.
Starting point is 00:03:36 best tax and investment advice. I want to help my kids, and I want to give back to the community. Ooh, then it's the vacation of a lifetime. Starting point is 00:04:48 See you soon. Right, dear listener, clothes. First of all, how do you pronounce this word? Is it clothes? Clothes. Oh, no, it's not Clovis. Clovis. Oh, no, don't say this.
Starting point is 00:05:03 Don't say that. Never say close. Yeah, we say close. Close the door. Open the door. Close the door. So it's the same sound. Close.
Starting point is 00:05:18 Close. My close. And, dear listener, clothes are plural. So it's they. Yeah, it's very strange. This strange English. So my clothes are expensive. My clothes are stylish.
Starting point is 00:05:31 My clothes are stylish. Rory, like, why? Like, clothes? Why not is? It's like clothes are. Well, we have a word that we can use with is. So we have clothes for like pieces of clothes, for example. But we have clothing. So it could be my clothing is. That's very formal, though. Yeah. But you can use clothing. You can of you like. I didn't. Yeah, you didn't. Yeah, you wore natural and super informal. Maybe because you forgot your age.
Starting point is 00:06:05 My excuse, even though it's not my birthday now, it will be when this episode goes out. So first of all, happy birthday future me. And second of all, my excuses, I'm just too focused on having a good time for my birthday. Clothes, beautiful clothes, elegant clothes, lovely clothes, cheap, expensive clothes. We can have casual clothes, like everyday clothes, casual, or smart clothes. The listener, smart clothes like her suits, formal clothes, smart clothes, for work, usually. But if you're like me and you're fine with a t-shirt and jeans, that's not exactly great vocabulary, but you can spice it out with some grammar and pronunciation by saying that's not terribly exciting, is it?
Starting point is 00:06:52 Yes, I'm fine with a t-shirt and jeans. I'm fine with a dress. I'm not fine with a dress. Well, but like for ladies, you know, I'm fine with a t-shirt. a hoodie and jeans, you know, hoodies. I'm fine with a shirt and jeans. I spend a lot of time choosing clothes or I don't spend much time choosing clothes, the structure. I spend a lot of time doing something. Rory hates shopping for clothes.
Starting point is 00:07:25 We shop for clothes we shop for, I don't know, gadgets, shop for books. and perhaps he was traumatized in childhood. He has this trauma from childhood. Something happened when he was shopping for clothes in childhood, and now he hates it. Audio listener, you can say, I love it. I love shopping. Audio listener, you can say, I enjoy shopping for clothes.
Starting point is 00:07:55 I am a shopaholic, or I'm a bit of a shopaholic. A bit. I'm just, you know, I'm a bit of a shopaholic. But if you haven't been trying to do that, traumatized, that's a shame because you can't say, I must have been traumatized. Logical deduction. Probably I was traumatized. I must have been traumatized in the past.
Starting point is 00:08:16 Try on clothes. This is your key phrase of verb of the day for clothes. We try on clothes in a shop, in a changing room, try on clothes. And every time I buy something, I try it on. I know that some men don't try on clothes, they just grab a pair of jeans and off they go. Well, because they know their size. You're kind of like, what? So this is something like beyond me.
Starting point is 00:08:44 I just can't understand it. How do you do this? Well, I mean, men only have like a range of sizes to choose from, which are quite limited, whereas I think it's different for ladies. However, if you're not sure about the size, you can make sure it fits. So if it fits, the size is okay for you. And if you make sure something happens, you check it happens or you ensure it happens. So I dislike shopping and I just nip in. Nip in.
Starting point is 00:09:10 It means like I get in. Or pop in. Pop in. Get what I want. Leave. Super straightforward. Yeah. Just like, you know, a focused action.
Starting point is 00:09:21 Delyson. It's not shopping. It's not the enjoyment of shopping. He just Rory has a focus. He has a task. He's task oriented. He knows he needs a black team. shirt. He has black, like 10 black t-shirts, but still he wants a new black t-shirt, so he nips in, takes what he needs, and leaves. But you said, I flee. Run away. Run away from the shop. Yeah. Flee escape by running away. It's C-1, dear listener. So you see, you can say just, okay, I leave. Or leave is like, it's easy. It's fine, but it's easy. Or you can say, I just. I just.
Starting point is 00:10:00 just nip in, get what I want, and flee. Right. If you are a lady, you can also do the same just to use the language. Yeah, yeah, I understand that you might enjoy shopping, and we spend like two hours in a shop easily. We just walk in and we walk out when it's dark. And like, okay, how does it happen? You know, like, wow, I spent four hours.
Starting point is 00:10:26 It's just like, yeah, for some ladies that's, absolutely fine. I'm with you, you know, I understand you. Yeah, it's just, you know, it's, it's therapy for us. Shopping is therapy. We enjoy it. It's a process, you know. Wear t-shirts. You can say, I'm not fond of t-shirts. I like wearing t-shirts. Or I wear vests. Rory wears vests Which is like a vest Like a Like a t-shirt with no arms
Starting point is 00:11:00 Basically Light vests or warmer Vests So we are talking about just like t-shirts Vests or tank tops Which I think is basically a kind of vest Isn't it? Yeah, it looks like a vest
Starting point is 00:11:14 We also have tank tops For women So just Google images tank tops. They are usually like a short, short ones. So yeah, I prefer to wear tank tops or vests. There you go, specific vocabulary.
Starting point is 00:11:33 And you can say that t-shirts are very easy to mix and match with different things. So mix and match. So I wear combined t-shirts with jeans, trousers, skirts. and you can call t-shirts teas. So I can combine teas with different things or I can mix and match teas with different things. T-shirts, teas. I usually wear black teas or white teas, white t-shirts,
Starting point is 00:12:07 because they are easy to mix and match with other things. I prefer casual clothes or I prefer smart clothes, comfy clothes, like comfortable clothes, but like a semi-casual style, you know, like not casual, not formal. I prefer formal clothes, casual clothes. And it makes me stand out. So if something stands out, people notice you, you stand out from the crowd. When I get dressed up properly, so dress up, you have a party and you want to dress up.
Starting point is 00:12:45 You put on something nice, something more elegant. than usual. Sorry, or like you put on some formal clothes for special occasions. Oh, like sometimes I do dress up. Sometimes I dress up for parties. I dress up at work. Or you can say like sometimes I wear smart clothes to make a good impression. So if I meet somebody for the first time, I want to make a good impression. So I dress up. But sometimes I let my hair down. Let me. my head down on. An idiom, dear listener, let my
Starting point is 00:13:22 hair down. Yeah, it's an old-fashioned idiom, according to Cambridge online dictionary, deal listener. Let your hair down. Allow yourself to behave much more freely than usual. Enjoy yourself, relax. So sometimes I put on
Starting point is 00:13:38 formal clothes, like put on formal clothes. You put clothes on yourself. Sometimes I put on formal clothes, smart clothes. But, as a weekend, I let my hair down and wear casual clothes. When things are up and running, which means when things are operational or working like they should. However, we better get up and running to our next episode.
Starting point is 00:14:03 Thank you very much for listening. Bye. No happy birthday for future me. Happy birthday, Rory. Woo, thank you. Yay! Okay, when I sell my business, I want the best tax and investment of I want to help my kids, and I want to give back to the community.
Starting point is 00:14:27 Ooh, then it's the vacation of a lifetime. I wonder if my out of office has a forever setting.
