Hello, hello, lovely and welcome into AILD speaking part two.
Describe a new law you would like to introduce in your country.
You should say what law it is, what changes this law brings, whether this law will be popular or not,
how you came up with this new law and explain how you feel about this.
Rory, give us your story.
Well, I can think of quite a few laws.
I'd like to see implemented, but the one that immediately stands out is making lying illegal.
Speaking about what changes it would bring, I think that it would be pretty obvious,
maybe pretty revolutionary and involve a massive overhaul of how people interact with
and treat one another. They would have to tell the truth in all their dealings and not
mislead people to the best of their ability. And this would apply to everyone,
regardless of whether they are rich or poor or high or low in status,
it would mean that no one could or should misrepresent things,
which we see and hear politicians and the media and corporations doing all the time.
And I don't know about anyone else, but I'm quite sick and tired of it.
If we consider whether it would be popular or not, I'm not sure.
On the one hand, people would probably love it
if people in the services and industries I mentioned would be straight with them
and not try to get one over on them,
or at least not be able to get away with doing that.
On the other hand, I wonder if the man on the street
would be comfortable sharing their true feelings
about everything with their fellows,
especially if it could lead to some pretty spectacular blow-ups.
Not everybody agrees about everything,
and people may have done something extremely wrong to someone.
When I think about how this occurred to me,
well, I always find myself getting frustrated with people being,
economical with the truth. Even little white lies can be annoying and cause delays or misunderstandings.
So why not do away with it all and just be direct about things? As for how I feel about it is concerned,
I suppose that I'd be thrilled if something like this came to pass, but it seems unlikely to
ever happen. People have been lying since the beginning of human history, and I doubt that's
going to change any time soon. Still, it can be fun to dream about how things could be different
if we did change something like that.
Who knows, maybe it will happen in the future.

You see, a very common topic describe a law.
They might ask you to describe a law you dislike, a law you like, a new law,
a law which is annoying, or a new law that you would like to introduce in your country.
So a rule, a law.
Rory told us about making lying illegal.
So you can't tell lies.
you mustn't tell lies.
So this is a law, right?
You can talk about making smoking illegal or banning smoking outside, for example, or inside.
Maybe a law about alcohol, maybe a law about driving, but choose something easy for you to talk about.
Or you can steal Rory's story.
Making lying illegal.
making something illegal.
What a nice law.
But then like, Rory, how would you check if a person is lying or not?
That's a very good point.
There are ways to prove if people are lying, you know?
For example, if a politician is lying, you can check with previous statements they've made
and what they're saying now.
Oh, yeah, there you go.
You see, you're like a lying detector.
Yeah, so you can talk about making something illegal.
And you can start off with, I can think of quite a few laws I'd like to see implemented in my country.
Or I'd like to implement a law about smoking.
Implement, introduce a law.
But when the law is introduced and changes begin to happen, we bring the changes.
You bring changes to your country, to society.
and it would be revolutionary.
So if something is new,
and this is a new law, making lying illegal,
you mustn't lie according to law,
so that would be revolutionally.
This would apply to everyone.
If, for example, you talk about making smoking illegal,
this would be about everyone,
so this would apply to everyone.
And if something is revolutionary,
it can cause a massive overhaul.
of something. So if something is massively overhauled or revolutionary, then it changes things in a big way.
When we talk about laws, we talk about politicians, so people in the government, politicians.
Politicians usually make laws, introduce laws, corporations, like companies.
Or just people in general, or the man on the street, which is what I said to describe that.
It could be a popular law.
or it may not be a popular law
or I don't know how popular it would be.
And then I did something I tell people not to do all the time.
I talked about on the one hand for positive things
and on the other hand for the negative things.
But I couldn't think of any other way to organize it.
Yeah, but that's fine.
You see, so on the one hand it could be popular.
But on the other hand, people may hate it.
And if a person commits a crime and nothing happens, a person gets away with it.
So we usually use this phrase or verb when we talk about something illegal, something bad,
get away with something to do something and avoid punishment.
So people don't pay taxes and they get away with it.
So nothing happens.
They don't get any punishment.
And when we talk about lies or people not telling a truth,
we can talk about them being economical with the truth,
which is another way of talking about lying or not telling the truth.
Yeah.
What a nice way of talking about lying.
Like be economical with the truth.
So you don't tell all the truth.
You are economical with the truth.
Or we can talk about little white lies,
which are small lies which we tell to, well, get by
or to avoid any serious social blowups.
Yeah, like blowups, mess ups.
Yeah, when we lie, we can tell a white lie,
which is like a lie, but it's not that serious.
Yeah, like, oh, how do I look?
Oh, you look fantastic, but actually you look awful.
So it's like, you know, it's a white lie.
To kind of, to be polite.
Some laws could be annoying, like irritating, annoying.
we don't like them.
When you describe your feelings, you can say,
oh, I'd be thrilled if this law was implemented.
If this law was introduced, I'd be thrilled, I would be.
And here we are talking about a law I'd like to introduce.
So we use would.
This would do good.
This would be popular or this wouldn't be popular.
I'd be thrilled if it would.
was introduced. Yeah, the second conditional. Maybe one day it could happen. You know, who knows?
It's unlikely to happen. Unlikely? Probably not. Or it's likely to happen. If you talk about
making smoking illegal in restaurants, yeah, it's quite likely to happen. Or I doubt that's
going to happen. I doubt. I have doubts. I'm not sure that it will be. It will be.
be introduced soon.
Especially if people have been doing it for a long time.
So you could say people have been doing since and then the beginning of history or since
the beginning of time.
Yeah, people have been lying since the beginning of human history or people have been smoking.
People have been drinking alcohol.
So it would be very difficult to make it illegal completely.
if you talk about something strange, a strange law like making lying illegal, you can say,
it's fun to dream about.
It's fun to dream about it.
Oh, let's make lying illegal.
It's fun to dream about it.
What other laws can our listener talk about?
That's a good question.
You mentioned smoking ban, so we should maybe pick anything that focuses on antisocial behavior.
Maybe it could be smoking or it could be smoking.
or it could be, I don't know,
using, maybe using phones at work, for example.
Any others?
Maybe something about the environment.
You know, maybe like recycling laws,
like how to recycle paper,
how to recycle materials,
or maybe a law on littering.
Littering when you throw rubbish outside.
So, for example,
I'd like to introduce a law
about making, throwing rubbish illegal.
So if you go down the street and you throw something, bam, you have to pay a lot of money.
You have to pay a fine.
Oh, if you litter, if you throw things away.
Outside, yeah.
And there are cameras everywhere, you know, to track littering.
Not everyone might like a law, so it could lead to some blowups, but that just means some arguments or rouse.
Yeah, of course, like you are making lying illegal, so everyone will be just, you know, annoyed.
Well, I can't lie. What? What's going on?
Yeah. That's an interesting idea to talk about.
