Hello, hello, dear listener and welcome into IEL speaking part two.
Describe a person you know who is doing something to protect the environment.
You should say who this person is, what this person is doing to protect the environment,
how easy or difficult it is for him or her to do this,
and explain how you feel about what this person is doing to protect the environment.
Right, Rory, give us your story.
Well, there are a lot of people like this that I know,
but the one who stands out the most right now is probably David Attenborough,
who is a famous documentarian and writer from the UK.
When it comes to who exactly he is, aside from what I mentioned already,
he's been a presenter of numerous programs on the BBC,
and I think other channels actually, for decades now.
actually I think he must be about a hundred years old or something like that.
I also suspect he's been honoured by a lot of people and organizations,
including the Queen and the King.
With regards to what he's been doing to protect the environment,
well, he certainly uses his documentaries to draw attention
to various endangered species and the habitats they live in.
And that kind of awareness raising goes a long way
towards encouraging people to look after the planet
and the local flora and fauna more general,
I'm not 100% sure, but I think he's also been speaking out at various climate change conferences and on panels to try and underscore the points being made in his documentaries.
In terms of how difficult it is for him to do stuff like this, well, it's probably a mixed bag.
I mean, on the one hand, people with platforms like that can very easily catch people's eyes and get attention for things.
but on the other hand he's a really old man
and regardless of how much money you have age is very much a limiting factor
as for how I feel about what he's been getting up to
to protect the environment
I suppose as someone who lives on the same planet
and would like it to be in a reasonable condition
I'm happy someone is taking action to try and encourage others to make an effort
I just hope it's not stressing him and his family out too much
And what do your friends think of this person?
We haven't really talked too much about him.
To be honest, I suspect they probably respect him, though.
He's a very well-respected figure in where I'm from anyway.

So, dear listener, you should know a person who is doing something to protect the environment.
So when we protect the environment, we collect rubbish. What do we do? Plant trees.
We recycle. Recycle. Yeah. So this person could be your friend. It could be famous person.
Lots of famous people do something to protect the environment. Your family member, your neighbor, your
your colleague or an imaginary person.
So I know Bob.
Bob recycles everything.
Bob is my bestie.
Yeah.
So just imagine this person, but do it now to prepare for this thing.
And we should say what exactly this person does.
So the activities that this person does to protect the environment.
Rory picked a famous person, David, I can't pronounce his surname.
Yes, you can.
David Attenborough.
Attenborough.
And he is 100 years old.
Oh my God, I was right.
He was born in 1926.
Wow.
So he's an English broadcaster,
natural historian and a writer.
And yeah, he has a lot of documentaries about nature.
He worked for BBC,
like programs about animals and plants.
Yeah.
Wow.
What a career.
100 years old.
I wonder if we'll be doing this.
when we're 100 years old.
Yeah, and he's talking about our impact on the natural world.
Yeah, like he talks about our destruction of the environment.
Super cheerful things.
Yeah, like he takes part in different environmental projects.
Right.
Yeah, the listener, so you can pick a famous person,
but then research what this person does.
Maybe like two, three activities.
Just, again, like two minutes.
You need to talk about it for two minutes.
So it should be very short.
not the biography of this person.
Right.
You can say that there are a lot of people like this in my life,
but the one who stands out is David, da-t-ta, or my friend, ta-t-ta-ta.
Who is a famous documentarian and writer, an English person, who is 100 years old?
A famous English person.
Yeah.
Because this person is alive, Rory uses present perfect.
So he has been a presenter for numerous programs on the BBC.
So he's been involved in different projects.
But if you talk about a person who died, then he was.
But if you talk about your friend, your neighbor, he's been, ta-t-ta-ta.
He has done, ta-t-ta-ta, he has helped, ta-tta-ta.
He has donated money to charity, to save trees.
Yeah, so he's been a presenter.
he has made many films, he has worked for many organizations.
And what he's been doing to protect the environment?
Here we can use present perfect continuous because he started helping the environment.
And he's going on.
He's helping.
Yeah, he's still helping.
So he has been doing this for a long time.
So he's been protecting the environment for a long time with documentaries to draw people's attention
to environmental problems.
And here we talk about endangered species, animals who are in danger.
They're maybe going to go extinct.
Yeah, endangered species and the habitats they live in.
Habitats like where animals live in.
He has been encouraging people to look after the planet.
So protect the environment, look after the planet.
look after the local flora and fauna.
So flora, like plants and trees and fauna, animals, species.
If you're not sure or if you don't remember, you can say,
I'm not 100% sure, but he has also been speaking about climate change during conferences.
Yes, that's true, according to Wikipedia.
But if we're not sure, we can say things like, I suspect,
and I'm not 100% sure, but maybe.
This person has been encouraging people to look after the planet.
This person has been speaking about something at conferences.
This person has made different documentaries, different films.

In terms of how difficult it is for him, it's a mixed bag.
So, Rory, what's a mixed bag?
well there are some positive things and some negative things or there are some easy things and some difficult things
so if it's not just one way or the other way it's a mixture of the two it's a mixed bag
a mixed bag a range of different things or people so a mixed bag of something so a mixed bag of people
take this class take this course so all sorts of people and then you say like on the one hand
it's quite easy because blah blah blah but on the other hand this man is pretty old well it might be
quite tiring especially if you're 100 years old that's crazy yeah can you imagine wow and if something
puts limits on you like that it's called a limiting factor age can be a limiting factor money can be a
limiting factor you can say this about any person so perhaps money is a limiting factor so this person may not
have enough money to protect the environment.
The final point is feelings, usually, during speaking part two, explain how you feel about
this person, about this.
So we start with, as for how I feel about what he's been doing, again, he's been doing, right?
As for how I feel about his activities, as for how I feel about what he's been doing to protect
the environment, I suppose, I think, da, da, da, da, da.
How do I feel? I feel happy that he takes action. So he does something actively. So he takes action to encourage people to make an effort, make an effort to do something, to try it out, to protect the environment. So what are the feelings? I feel pleased, the glad, maybe inspired. So I feel inspired.
Relieved that someone is doing something? Yeah, not me. I feel motivated, inspired.
happy, pleased.
We can finish with
I hope it's not stressing him out much.
So he might be stressed out
because of such activities.
So I hope it's not stressing him out too much.
Oh, you listen, what a topic.
Yeah.
I know. That's crazy.
But do you have famous people
who are famous worldwide
because they protect the environment?
I think David Duttenborough is famous worldwide,
but I can't think of anybody else. It's similar.
Oh, Al Gore.
Al Gore used to be quite famous for this.
Google says DiCaprio.
Does Leonardo DiCaprio talk about saving the environment?
From his private jet?
Yeah.
Well, okay.
According to some website, it's DiCaprio.
He's a dedicated environmentalist.
Leonardo DiCaprio has used his global platform
to defend wildlife and fight climate change.
There we go, DeLisner.
Ask Google about his private jet.
He has funded over 200 projects focused on wildlife conservation.
So he kind of protects rare species.
From his private jet.
And his documentary, 2016, before the flood, is about climate change or something.
Was it filmed from his private jet?
No, no, no, look, look.
He has also delivered powerful speeches at the United Nations.
There we go.
which he reached using his private jet.
I'm sorry.
I'm not a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio,
so I'm not going to sit here and say that he's doing good things to protect the environment.
Okay, okay.
Billy Elish, that's another one.
So if you don't dislike DeCaprio.
So a leading young climate advocate.
Advocate is like, she supports this.
Billy Elish, it's a she, right?
Yes, it is.
So, Billy Elish, 24 years old now, wow.
Okay. If you have no idea who Billy Eilish is, just Google, Billy E-I-L-I-S-H.
Yes. Also pronounced Eilish.
Eilish, oh, really? So Billy Elish is known for her echo-friendly concert tours.
Again, echo-friendly concerts. Oh, she has water refill stations to reduce plastic waste.
Whoa, that's nice. No plastic during concerts.
Good for her.
Her tour, 2004-2015, raised $11 million for climate and food.
Not bad?
So, yeah, there we go, your listener.
So you can say, like, again, Google what Billy Elish does.
Again, two, three activities.
Just, you know, one paragraph about this, because you have two minutes.
Or Leonardo DiCaprio.
There we go.
Or imaginary friend Bob, who recycles, avoids plastic.
Thank you very much for listening.
We'll get back to you in our speaking part three where we talk about, yes, the environment.
Oh, and protecting the environment.
Bye.
Bye.
