Hello, hello, dear listener and welcome into IELD speaking part two.
Describe a person you know who has chosen a career in the medical field, a doctor or a nurse.
You should say who he or she is, what he or she does, why he or she chose this career and explain how you feel about this person.
Rory, give us your story.
Well, I know a lot of people in the medical profession, but the one whom most immediately comes to my mind right now is my friend Simon.
He's a nurse practitioner at the teaching hospital in my hometown.
Speaking about who exactly he is, we've been friends for quite a few years now, and in the time I've known him, he's always been working at Nine Wells.
That's the name of the hospital complex he works at, though I don't really know too much about the fine
details of his career there, just the job title. If we consider the ins and outs of what he does now,
like I say, I'm actually pretty ignorant about all of it. But to the best of my knowledge,
his post is something like a bridge between a doctor and a nurse. So he has some power to
diagnose and treat patients in addition to supervising the work of nurses on the ward that he works on.
That's about the long and short of it, really. It all sounds very technical when he talks about it
at length and I don't really have the brain power to grasp it, which is probably why I'm not a
doctor who are working in that field. And I think about why he chose to do that sort of work.
I never actually asked him since people in medicine have pretty stressful lives, and I imagine
the last thing they'd want to do with their friends is talk about work. Usually we just do
other things like share anecdotes and have a laugh together. And I guess though, I imagine he picked
that particular career path because there was some chance of people.
progression and a decent salary doing it. He trained at art school before that and it can be very
hard to make money as an artist these days, so that would make sense to me. Though I'd pay him to do
painting in my home since he seems to have been quite good at that too. As far as how I feel about him
concerned, as with all my friends, I'm very happy to have him in my life and I really enjoy his company
when I do get to see him. He does shift work, so that doesn't happen as often as I'd like. Like I say,
he's a good guy with a fantastic sense of humor and a way with words,
and he's definitely made my life better for being in it.

See you soon.
So, dear listener, a very specific topic.
Describe a person who has chosen a career in the medical field,
So you talk about a doctor, a nurse, a specific doctor, like a surgeon, a dentist.
Surgeon performs medical operations.
See one word, surgeon, a dentist.
Or you steal Rory's story.
If you don't have any people, you know, from a medical field, you just copy Rory's story.
And you should know the name of a specific doctor.
So a dentist, a surgeon.
And if you don't, then you better get to know one.
Yeah, exactly.
Like, Google the name of this specific profession.
Like, who else do you know?
Oh, my God.
I know lots of doctors.
Like, my friend, Josh is a doctor.
No, no, no, no, not the names, but the name of a profession, like a surgeon, a nurse, a dentist.
Oh, right, okay.
You could talk about a specific kind of surgeon, like a plastic surgeon or an orthopedic surgeon.
Yeah. And what do you call a doctor who works with children?
A pediatrician.
Oh, yeah. Pediatrician, dear listener.
Yeah. Or you can just remember, just talk about a dentist. That's all. Dentist. Very easy to remember.
You can start off with, I know a lot of people in the medical profession, but one that comes to mind is my friend Bob, is my friend Rory.
And actually you can say, yeah, yeah, like I know many doctors, but one that stands out is Rory.
He's a nurse practitioner.
Yeah, and here we have Rory and we call Rory a nurse.
Or like Simon or Bob doesn't matter what the name is.
And yeah, we can have a male nurse.
And practitioner, like a nurse practitioner, why not say like he's a nurse.
what is like nurse practitioner?
Well, if you are a nurse practitioner and you are listening,
I'm going to oversimplify your job.
But I think a nurse practitioner is like a combination of doctor and nurse together.
At least that's the impression I get from what I hear from people in that job.
Yeah, because nurses usually just they don't diagnose illnesses.
Yes, they treat the patients.
They follow the instructions of the doctor.
or interpret the instructions, I should say.
I don't think doctors can just go around telling nurses what to do.
Yeah, he's a nurse practitioner.
He's a dentist.
He's a surgeon.
And he's working in the hospital in my hometown or he's teaching.
So this doctor can teach other doctors.
We've been friends for a long time.
Or I've known this person for a long time.
Present perfect.
We've known each other for two.
years. I've known him for many years, or just for one week, for example. And then the key sentence
is to say that I don't really know too much about the fine details of his career. I don't know
much. I don't know the fine details. So you're saying that I don't know much about what he does.
Seriously, like I'm not in medicine. I'm not a doctor. Well, if you are
are a doctor, dear listener, well done you. Okay, you just go ahead with terminology, with all this
these beautiful words that you know about medicine. Absolutely go ahead. That's great. It's going to be
formal and the examiner will be bombarded. Just you will throw all this medicine words at the examiner.
It's fine if the examiner doesn't know half of them because, well, you are the doctor here, not
the examiner. So, you say, I don't know too much about the fine details of his career. So I don't know
much about what he does. Or I'm pretty ignorant of what he does. I'm ignorant of what he does. So I have
zero idea. But I guess he has some power to diagnose. So we do still use some words about medicine.
diagnose diseases is when a doctor tells patients, tells people, okay, you have this, you have this.
So diagnose is C2.
So like she was diagnosed with some blood disorder.
He was diagnosed with diabetes.
Yeah, to diagnose C2 word, Ben 90, you know.
I was going to say, I really hope diagnosed is a C2 word because not many people know that one.
Oh, yeah, absolutely.
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
C2, but nine.
So, my friend diagnoses people.
Can I say he diagnoses people, patients.
Well, yes, who else are going to diagnose?
Treat.
So when the doctor diagnoses you, they treat you.
Treat you, like they give you some treatments.
Drink this, do this, don't do this.
He's the medicine.
so they treat you.
They deal with your illness.
They tell you to use drugs, medicine, exercises.
Patients are people who go to hospitals.
Well, then they don't work there.
They enjoy the services.
I don't really have the brain power to grasp what he does.
It's another way of saying I have no idea what they do.
I have no idea what they do.
I don't have the brain power to understand what he does.
Brain power.
The power of your brain.
Your intelligence, ability to think.
Like writing this essay has taken all my brain power.
Or understanding this complex grammar has taken all my brain power.
That's it.
I can't think anymore.
I am not a doctor.
You can say, okay, I'm not a doctor.
I don't have the brain power to understand what he does.
I don't work in this field.
So the medical field, right?
I don't work in this field.
I have no idea what he does.
I've never asked him why he does this.
Like, why is he a doctor?
I have no idea.
You know, I've never asked him.
Present perfect.
Being a doctor is stressful.
They don't want to talk about it all the time.
I imagine he picked.
this career, he picked, he chose this career path, this career, career or career path,
because blah, blah, blah, because of his family, because of money, because he was told to do it,
because he likes helping people, because of a decent salary. So a good salary, a decent salary.
That's why most people choose their jobs. And why not?
Oh, and you know, it's interesting that Rory's friend trained at art school and then he decided to be a doctor. Wow.
Yeah. That's so funny though, because I have another friend who decided to become a doctor and then went to art school instead.
So there you go. It can go both ways.
I'm very happy to have him in my life. I'm happy to have her in my life, to have this person in my life.
I really enjoy his company. So I enjoy being.
being around this person, he does shift work.
And usually doctors do shifts.
Shifts like night shifts, so they work at night, or they work during the day.
So they work in shifts.
Like shift and day shift.
Day or night, yeah.
And you can say I don't get to see him very often because he does shift work.
I wish I could see him more often, him or her.
he's got a fantastic sense of humor.
I like his sense of humor.
And we can use some adjectives about this person.
He's funny, generous, good-looking, handsome, smart, intelligent.
That's a good thing to note, by the way,
because I realized I was running out of things to say about that particular aspect.
So I just decided to describe my friend even more.
And you can do the same thing in your exam.
if you have to describe a person.
When you talk about who they are,
you can talk about what they look like
or about their personality.
Thank you very much for listening.
We'll get back to you in our next episode.
Is it about people in the medical field?
Oh yeah, people in the medical field.
Oh, yeah, some topic-specific vocabulary.
Bye.
