Hello, hello, dear listener, and welcome into IEL speaking part two.
Describe a plan that you've changed recently.
You should say, when this happened, what made you change the plan, what the plan was,
and say how you felt about the change.
Rory, give us your story.
Normally, I stick to plans once they've been made, but this one time that does come to mind
when I'd arranged to meet one of my friends,
and it didn't quite pan out how I'd been expecting it to.
Speaking about when exactly this was,
I actually really don't remember the dates,
but it was about a month or so ago
when I'd tried to organize a get-together with some friends
I hadn't seen in quite some time.
I'd only realized that when I'd been scrolling back
through my WhatsApp messages
and came across a casual message
that I had totally failed to reply to,
which is so unlike me,
it just completely slipped my mind.
all together.
Anyway, I said about putting things right and arranged to meet them and buy coffee and have lunch
together. If we consider what made the plans change, well, that was another uncharacteristic
lack of foresight on my part. I had arranged to meet them in the late afternoon at a coffee shop,
but of course all of them closed at that time of day. So that kind of put the kibosh on the whole
thing. When I think about how things changed, it was just a case of finding a place that would do
everything we needed, but obviously that was still open. So we hunted around for a place online
after we met up and eventually we settled on Starbucks. Some of my friends were none too happy about
that since they really don't like it and they think it's a bit of an expensive dump or a rip-off,
but it was the best we could do and beggars really can't be choosers, so we just took the car
there. As far as how I felt about the whole thing is concerned, well at the time I was pretty
embarrassed. Usually I'm the organized one in the group, but I'd really drop the ball on that front
this time. On the plus side, it'll never happen again. It's kind of one of those mistakes you only make
once, and I did pay for everything to make up for it. Hopefully I won't have to do that again,
otherwise I'll end up destitute. Like I said, Starbucks is very expensive.

So, dear listener, a plan that you have changed recently.
So you planned it and then you changed it.
The story could be about the past.
So I'm going to tell you about a plan that I had to change.
You can start off with, I usually stick to my plan.
plans. So I follow my plans. If I plan it, I stick to it. I do what I said I would. We make plans.
So once I made a plan, once I make a plan, I stick to it. But one time that comes to mind is when I
arranged to meet one of my friends. Or one time that comes to mind that I remember is when I
I had to arrange a meeting or like remember something.
Okay.
The easiest topic is to talk about a meeting with your friend.
So you arranged to meet one of your friends, but it didn't pan out.
This is a key phrase or verb for this topic.
It didn't work out.
It didn't pan out.
If something doesn't pan out, it doesn't develop in a particular way.
usually in a successful way.
So we agreed to meet on Monday, but it didn't pan out.
So it didn't happen.
It didn't, it wasn't like this.
Oh, let's meet next week.
Ooh, I'm not sure.
I don't know how things at work will pan out.
Sometimes you have to wait and see.
Yeah, I'm not sure how things at work will pan out.
Or like a new business didn't pan out.
it wasn't successful, so it didn't develop successfully.
I don't remember the exact dates, but it was about a month ago, it was a week ago, a year ago,
last month, I tried to organize a get-together with some friends.
A get-together is just a meeting, so I wanted to organize a get-together with some friends.
I wanted to meet up with some of my friends.
And you can use Pass Perfect.
So I wanted to meet some of my friends because I hadn't seen them for a long time.
So I wanted to meet them because I hadn't seen them.
So first I hadn't seen them, then I wanted to meet them.
There's a lot of that here.
And I was scrolling back through my WhatsApp messages.
Well, I'd only realized it, so I'd, I had only realized it when I had been scrolling back.
So another one.
Buzz perfect year.
And I had totally failed to reply to them.
Sorry again, Steve and Dave.
If you're listening to this podcast episode, I am a terrible friend.
You can also say that I realized that something went wrong when I was scrolling through my WhatsApp.
So pass continues.
So one day I was scrolling through my messages, I was looking through my messages, and I saw a message.
I came across a message.
I saw a message from my friend, which I had failed to reply to.
Again, before I didn't reply, then I saw it.
That's why we use pass perfect.
I saw a message which I had forgotten about.
which I had failed to reply to.
It slipped my mind.
So I'd forgotten about it.
I forgot about it.
Yeah, like you read it and then bam, you know, like you forgot it.
The message was about changing the date or changing the time.
I sat about putting things, right?
I arranged things.
I arranged the time.
I arranged the date.
And what was in the message?
you remember?
It was just saying that they hadn't seen me in a while
and it would be nice if we met up at some point
and I just completely failed to reply for whatever reason
I must have been distracted
Wait but first you wrote to your friends
like organizing and get together
then they came back to you
and then you just didn't reply
No this was before I was scrolling back through our messages
and realized that they'd sent me something prior to me
asking them if they would want to meet up
Things that can make it plan change are a lack of foresight, which just means a lack of failing to plan ahead.
Or you don't plan ahead.
And if it's something that you don't normally do, it is uncharacteristic.
So it's uncharacteristic of me to fail at planning something.
It's also uncharacteristic of me to fail to reply to things.
So I don't know, maybe I was having a bad week that week.
My laziness made me change the plans.
Or bad weather made me change.
my plans. So something made the plans change. I arranged to meet them in a coffee shop. I arranged
to meet them in the morning, but then I had to change the plan. Kibosh. Kibosh. Wow, what a word.
The whole thing is put the kibosh on something, but that just means ruin something or make it
not work properly. Put the kibosh on something. Spoil or destroy an idea or plan.
And the rain put the kibosh on our plans.
We had to change the place for the meeting,
so we hunted around for a place online.
Hunted around like we wanted to find a place.
We hunted around for a place.
Eventually, finally, we met up in Starbucks.
Like we met each other in Starbucks.
It was a rip-off.
Or we settled on Starbucks.
That means we decided to go there.
If you settle on something, you make the decision after some discussion.
Yeah, we discussed where to go and we settled on Starbucks or we settled on a fish restaurant.
It was a rip-off.
If something is a rip-off, then it's super expensive.
It costs more money than it should.
Oh, that's a complete rip-off, like $50 for a coffee.
I was pretty embarrassed
because you had to change the plan
you had to change the time, the day,
you had to change the place.
I had to admit I wasn't paying attention.
Yeah, I didn't find a place for us
so I was very embarrassed.
I felt ashamed, I felt shy,
I was pretty embarrassed.
Usually I'm the organized one in the group
but not that day.
This time, no, that's why the plan had to change.
On the plus side,
there was something positive in the story.
On the plus side, we had a good time.
I paid for everything to make up for it.
So if you change the plan and your friends were not happy with it,
or just to be nice, to make up for it, you pay.
So if you change something, usually you do something
to make up for it. Make up for...
To apologize.
Yeah, to do something nice.
To make your friends feel happier.
And usually when we fail to do something, we do something bad.
Then you give people money or a cake or something like a piece of chocolate to make up for it.
Ooh, I messed up. Here's some chocolate.
And hopefully I won't have to do it again. Otherwise, I'll end up destitute, which means
without any money or anything.
Thank you very much for listening.
We'll get back to you in our next episode.
Bye.
Bye.
