Starting point is 00:00:00 The ride that steals the spotlight every time it hits the road, that's the Volkswagen Tiguan. Its sleek exterior makes a first impression you can't ignore. Step inside to find available full leather seats and wood accents. Under the hood, the available 201 turbocharged horsepower engine gives it a fun to drive edge. The refined Tiguan, you deserve more style. Visit vw.ca to learn more. SuvW, German engineered for all. Hello, lovely. I'm Maria.
Starting point is 00:00:36 And I am professional dance instructor Rory Duncan. And we are the host of the AIL Speaking for Success podcast. The podcast that aims to help you improve your speaking skills, as well as your listening skills along the way. We've started this podcast to give you gorgeous grammar and fabulous vocabulary for your high-Ild school. Your band nine score. Dear listener, of course Rory is not a professional dancer.
Starting point is 00:00:58 He's lying. Absolutely lying. I'm just going to do this in every episode because no one pays attention to the opening credits for this so if we change it a bit maybe that will make people laugh Yeah dear listener so Rory is bored So he decided to just I've decided to start lying
Starting point is 00:01:17 Yeah he decided to start lying number one And every time we say hello to you Rory will say a different profession So today Rory is a professional dancer Okay Rory like what's the dance The tango Argentino Argentinian tango It's cold, okay?
Starting point is 00:01:38 Right, you see, DeLisina, but... Oh, by the way, happy Easter, Rory. Do you have any stag? What a segue? What a transition. I don't actually, but chocolate is not my favorite food anyway. Oh, what a shame. But let's talk about food.
Starting point is 00:01:57 Hmm? Maybe, dear listener, you are celebrating Easter and you have like anista bunny or Easter eggs or what else do they do like special Easter cake. Yeah. Maybe not in your culture, but well, in some countries people celebrate Easter. And even if you don't, food is the topic. You could be asked about it in the exam. Amazon Presents Jeff versus Taco Truck Salsa.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Whether it's Verde. Roja or the orange one. For Jeff, trying any salsa is like playing Russian roulette with a flame thrower. Luckily, Jeff saved with Amazon and stocked up on antacids, ginger tea and milk. Habanero? More like habanier, yes. Save the everyday with Amazon. What's your favorite food?
Starting point is 00:02:59 I'm torn between steak and pizza right there, to be honest. Steak is great because it helps me hit all my macros as part of my diet. But while I normally don't do junk food, I do love a big pizza to celebrate the end of a hard week. So it's kind of a toss-up between those two. Do you eat different foods at different times of the year? Not particularly. I pretty much stick to the same select food choices all year round.
Starting point is 00:03:28 I think the closest thing to seasonal foods would be strawberries in the summer. but that's only because my parents tend to buy and share them at that time of year. Has your favorite food changed since you were a child? I don't think so. I've always been a big fan of any meat dishes or products. I've definitely developed an appreciation for salad as I've gotten older. It's far from my favorite thing in the world. What kind of food did you like when you were young? Aside from what I said, I was quite a large kid
Starting point is 00:04:06 and it was fairly obvious that I liked chocolate, burgers, all kinds of junk food. I'm far healthier these days compared to before. As you know, we now release all of our premium content for free and it's available for one month. After one month, it goes into our super secret archive. Starting point is 00:04:38 So, dear listener, food, what a lovely topic. Food, you know, we all love food. Food. So what's your favorite food? Rory can't decide. Perhaps it's a steak or pizza. So if kind of you are in between, you can say it's a toss-up between steaks or pizza. It's a toss-up between steak or pizza. What a choice.
Starting point is 00:05:13 What about you, Maria? Oh, yeah, pizza. Yeah, Italian food. Only pizza? No, pasta, pizza, gelato or cappuccino. Italian food is my favorite here. Also... So it's not really a toss-up between two things.
Starting point is 00:05:25 It's just like a massive list of food. Absolutely. Italian food. I love Chinese food. Ooh. But not spicy. Chinese food. Yum, yum, yum, yum.
Starting point is 00:05:34 So, dear listener, you can say I love. Chinese food or I love Chinese cuisine, cuisine like food, Italian food, or you can name a special dish, not like a specific dish, right? So I'm torn between steak and pizza. I'm torn between is another synonym. It's a toss-up between because like a torn is the third form of the verb, tear. The bear tore him apart. Oh, Lovely, since we're talking about food. Or, like, something like, my dress was torn, right? Foh, kind of destroyed.
Starting point is 00:06:15 So, tear is the verb. I'm torn between steak and pizza. Like, I don't know which I prefer more, steak or pizza. Maria is not torn between two things. She just has food. Yeah. And, Roy, you said, like, all my macros. Yeah, macro nutrients.
Starting point is 00:06:33 So, broadly speaking, there are three macros. macronutrients, fat, protein, and carbohydrates. And you need to keep them in a kind of balance as part of a diet. That would be something that you, or the things that you eat regularly. A diet's not just about removing food. It's also about regulating what you eat. Macronutrients, dear listener, is a specific term from biology. So, macronutrients.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Yeah. Like fiber and protein are key macronutrients. Macronutrients, yeah. Big things. There are micronutrients too. I imagine specific carbohydrates or specific kinds of protein work that we do. And you can say that steak helps me hit all my macros as part of my diet. Diet, like as part of my food, all the food I eat.
Starting point is 00:07:35 is my diet. And steak helps me hit all my macros, all my macro nutrients. Nice. But pizza doesn't help. Pizza is just for happiness, you know, for good mood, happiness, joy, positive energy. I stick to the same food. Stick to. I choose the same food.
Starting point is 00:08:02 Yes. And you can say I pretty much stick to the same food. It's the same select food choices. If it's select, it's focused. You missed out the best collocation. Very sad. Select food choices. All year round or during the year, all year round is a nice one.
Starting point is 00:08:24 And you can talk about seasonal foods. Here we can say foods, not food, but foods, like different products. Seasonal products? Like, what are seasonal products? Well, things that only grow specific types of year. For example, maybe specific vegetables grow in your country at a specific time, so they are cheaper that time of year because they can grow more readily. In my country, that is, well, in the summer it's strawberries, blueberries,
Starting point is 00:08:52 raspberries, that's because that's when those things grow. Yeah, and it's quite healthy to eat seasonal foods. So we don't usually eat berries in winter, because they don't grow in winter. They grow in summer. So in summer, we usually eat seasonal foods such as strawberries, different berries, apples, veg, vegetables. My favorite food has changed since I was a child. So here we are using the present perfect. My food has changed or my food choices have changed since I was a child, since I was young.
Starting point is 00:09:34 Local news is in decline across Canada, and this is bad news for all of us. With less local news, noise, rumors, and misinformation fill the void, and it gets harder to separate truth from fiction. That's why CBC News is putting more journalists in more places across Canada, reporting on the ground from where you live, telling the stories that matter to all of us, because local news is big news. Choose news, not noise. CBC News. Okay, when I sell my business, I want the best tax and investment advice. I want to help my kids, and I want to give back to the community.
Starting point is 00:10:13 Ooh, then it's the vacation of a lifetime. I wonder if my head of office has a forever setting. An IG Private Wealth advisor creates the clarity you need with plans that harmonize your business, your family, and your dreams. Get financial advice that puts you at the center. Find your advisor at IDPrivatewealth.com. And you can use the present perfect in this one. I've always been a fan of meat.
Starting point is 00:10:42 I've always been a fan of fish. I've always enjoyed fish. I've always been a fan of Italian food, Italian cuisine. Oh, just like meat dishes, fish dishes. And I've recently developed an appreciation for salads. So recently, I started enjoying salads. And appreciation is something, is a nice word.
Starting point is 00:11:11 When you like something. I have an appreciation for Maria. Hmm. I have appreciation for Rory. You know, we like each other. Yeah. Because I'm such a good dance teacher. Oh, you're a teacher now.
Starting point is 00:11:25 Oh, did I say that? I meant to say professional dance instructor. Right. So you see, it's just lying. So much lying, Rory can't... If you don't understand that joke, it's because you were not paying attention in the introduction. In the introduction, Rory told us that he's a professional dancer.
Starting point is 00:11:44 Now he's... Lying again. He forgot his lies and said that he's a dancing teacher now. Right, dear listen, where were we? So I've developed an appreciation for meat, for fish, for salads, and now, for example, chocolate is my favorite thing in the world, or maybe dark chocolate. When you talk about your childhood, you can say, I used to like chocolate, I used to like fried eggs.
Starting point is 00:12:14 I used to eat a lot of burgers, but not anymore. As a child, I used to eat a lot of junk food, fast food, McDonald's. Yeah, McDonald's, if you kind of want to get in touch and be our sponsor, just feel free to kind of right to us, you know. Nike as well. Yaguchi. Yeah, you're also very welcome. So you can say, I used to eat a lot of junk food. I used to eat a lot of burgers. I used to be fat, I think is what we're trying to say. Okay. Yeah. I used to be unhealthy, right? No, as for me, for example, I used to eat quite a lot of bread and sugar and donuts, sweets, biscuits, you know, all that stuff. But now I'm
Starting point is 00:12:59 far healthier. So you don't say I'm, well, you can say I'm more healthy, it's okay, but if you want to say, like, definitely I'm just, I'm much healthier. You can say, I'm far healthier, you know, like, to intensify. Or you could be super informal and say, I'm way healthier these days.
Starting point is 00:13:18 I wouldn't say I was way healthier, just far or much healthier. I still do some unhealthy things. For example, I stopped, well, as for me, I stopped eating bread and sugar. no more sugar for me, I'm sweet enough now. So I'm saying about myself, I'm far healthier. And I'm looking at Rory now, and he looks really healthy.
Starting point is 00:13:42 His face is shining. The camera is not working. It's all that professional dancing. That's what it is. Oh yeah, it's just Argentinian tango and hugging a lot of people, beautiful people. All right, you're listening. So, as we are talking about food, we are ready. for a joke.
Starting point is 00:14:01 Are we? Yes. Okay. So the joke is, what do you call a fake noodle? Okay, what do you call a fake noodle? An impasta. Rory explains the joke.
Starting point is 00:14:19 Go ahead, Rory. So, a fake person or someone who is doing something they shouldn't be is an imposter. But of course, it sounds similar to impasta. which is a kind of, well, pasta is a kind of food. So if anyone ever complains about my joke about being a professional dance instructor or dance teacher, I refer you to this joke and see who comes out better.
Starting point is 00:14:46 Yeah, but it's funny. Come on, like a pasta, you know, imposter, imposter, you know, a fake person, fake, like not real. And then noodles, they are kind of kind of pasta, but not really like Chinese noodles, for example, right? So, like, it's not a real pasta, so it's impasta. Right. Just remember, dear listener, there's no love more sincere than the love for food. Okay? So, our love for food is the most sincere thing in the world. Yum, yum, yum.
Starting point is 00:15:20 Pizza pasta, pizza pasta. Capucino. And, dear listener, also remember that everything that is not water is food. Tea is food, coffee is food, juice is food. Okay, so we have water. Everything else is food. Bon Appetit, enjoy your meal. And we'll get back to you in our next episodes.
