Starting point is 00:00:30 Hello, hello, dear listener, and welcome into IEL speaking part three. We are talking about medicine. Hmm, medical stuff in general. Not like stuff, stuff, stuff like things, but medical staff, medical employees, doctors and nurses. Do you think doctors and nurses are very important? Oh, exceptionally so. Without them, you couldn't have a functioning healthcare service or sector, and a lot of people would be suffering as a result. Could you give me more details? Yeah, if you, I don't know who else could be trusted to treat people and diagnose their illnesses, if not medical staff.
Starting point is 00:01:20 I know there are alternative medical specialists, but I wouldn't place much stock in them. Who plays a more important role, doctors or nurses? Oh, that's a hard question, because at least as I understand it, they do different things. Doctors diagnose and nurses execute the treatments and care. So you can't really have one without the other, can you? And what do you think most people think about it? Well, being a doctor is probably seen by most as being more prestigious and well-paid, but just because something is seen in a certain way doesn't mean it has more actual weight.
Starting point is 00:01:56 Do you think that doctors and nurses are not paid enough? I think everyone isn't paid what they're actually worth really, but medical staff in particular seem to get a pretty raw deal, yeah. And what evidence do you have for that? Well, when you think about all the training they have to do and all they are put through by the organizations they work for and all the nonsense they have to put up with and then combine that with the fact they're pretty indispensable,
Starting point is 00:02:24 That probably justifies quite a significant rise in salary, or a big one anyway. Is it necessary to learn first aid skills? Probably, yeah. These days we have a lot more people and people are getting older while systems are increasingly under pressure. So it makes sense that members of the public are prepared to act to help each other out, even if it's just to preserve lives until the experts can come and save the day. Has that always been true? I'm not sure, but probably not.
Starting point is 00:02:55 Like when there were fewer people and there was less of a burden on the healthcare system and there were more resources to support people, then well, these resources would be more readily available. These days that isn't true unless we're talking about very extreme circumstances. Is learning biology interesting for children? It can be provided they have the inclination or the temperament for it. Not everyone feels comfortable around bugs, and bodily fluids, do they?
Starting point is 00:03:25 Will biology be interesting for children in the future? I imagine so. People always have had a diversity of interests. Life would be very dull otherwise. Is being a doctor easy or difficult? I can't imagine anything more difficult, frankly. It involves a massive amount of training. And when you're qualified, you have such a burden of responsibility.
Starting point is 00:03:49 And even if you get things right, people could still die or come out worse for wear, the strain must be incredible, and yet they do it. Good for them. I know that I couldn't handle that. Can this change? Short of some technological revolution, no, people will always want and need help with their medical issues and emergencies. That's just the nature of people in life, really. We're social and we need each other to get by. Okay. my business. I want the best tax and investment advice. I want to help my kids and I want to give
Starting point is 00:04:29 back to the community. Ooh, then it's the vacation of a lifetime. I wonder if my head of office has a forever setting. Starting point is 00:05:09 Right, dear listener, doctors or nurses, you can say neither is more important. They are equally vital for patients. So we need doctors and we need. need nurses. Yeah, because like the role of doctors, they diagnose, they make decisions about a patient, and nurses care for patients. They take your blood, they care for you, they give you medicine, they are there at your bedside. You cannot live without them.
Starting point is 00:05:50 Indispensable. Mm, both of them are. indispensable. So doctors treat people. Well, doctors diagnose people. Maybe they treat people sometimes, but it's usually the nurses doing that. Oh, okay, nurses treat people, right? So doctors make all the decisions. Like, together, they are called medical stuff with a stuff like employees, medical workers, medical stuff, the stuff in a hospital. Nurses execute treatments. So they, provide treatment to patients. Treatment is what you get in a hospital.
Starting point is 00:06:31 When they give you drugs, they perform different procedures. So treatment. Medical treatment. They execute the treatment, which means they give the treatment. They don't execute the patients. And doctors are usually seen as being more prestigious. Because doctors, what, they, They are kind of in the hierarchy.
Starting point is 00:06:56 They are higher than nurses. Doctors tell nurses what to do. Yeah, so doctors make decisions. So doctors have more responsibility. The responsibilities usually. Well, they've got responsibility for diagnosing. I think the nurses have lots of responsibilities too. Right, yeah, but if a nurse messes up,
Starting point is 00:07:17 if a nurse forgets to give some medicine or mixes up medicine, yeah, a patient can die. This is not an easy job. I'm so glad they're getting some attention for this. Thank you, doctors and nurses, if you're listening. Absolutely, yeah. We love you. We adore what you're doing. It's just incredible.
Starting point is 00:07:36 Truly incredible. So you can say that we can't really have one without the other. So we can't have doctors without nurses. We can't have one without the other. I believe that they are not paid enough. they are underpaid, so not enough. Or they're not paid what they are worth. And if you have a pretty difficult set of conditions in your workplace, you get a raw deal.
Starting point is 00:08:07 What does it mean? Well, if you get a raw deal, then you get a bad deal or you end up in a bad situation. Could you give us an example with this phrase? Okay, sometimes teachers get a raw deal when they get a difficult class and no support. A raw deal means something bad, unfair treatment. Some children at school can get a raw deal. If a child studies in a group of like 40 people, you know, not like 10 people, but there are 40 of them in one class. So that's a raw deal to many people.
Starting point is 00:08:46 They are pretty indispensable, dear listener, indispensable. they can't be replaced. Doctors are indispensable. Nurses are indispensable. They are so good, so important for us that we can't manage without them. Indispensable is C-2, so ben nine. Okay, when I sell my business, I want the best tax and investment advice. I want to help my kids, and I want to give back to the community.
Starting point is 00:09:17 Ooh, then it's the vacation of a lifetime. I wonder if my out of office has a forever center. Starting point is 00:09:45 But I disagree. Like with Bat 365. I get paid the second my team goes up big with first. early payout and can cash out at any time before the game ends. No hard feelings, Kevin. Just faster payouts from Bet365. The home of winning early. Must be 19 and older.

Terms and conditions apply. Yay, man night vocabulary. So we have like diagnose, doctors diagnose patients, doctors and nurses are indispensable. So that's already like two and nine words.
Starting point is 00:10:23 We learn first aid skills. First aid means like if a person feels bad, you know how to help them. You have basic first aid skills. Life saving techniques. You can provide immediate care. So like stop bleeding, for example. Well, if you're having a cardiac arrest or a heart attack, then people can keep your blood pumping until the doctors arrive.
Starting point is 00:10:51 Exactly, yeah. Basic first aid skills. And people should be able to help each other out, help out, to provide immediate care. Do you know how to do that? No. Maria, no. I'm the only qualified first aider on the podcast. Yes, you are.
Starting point is 00:11:12 Wow. And this is important to preserve lives, to say, save lives. To keep people safe. Biology could be interesting or not interesting, could be boring. So you can say, like, well, it's boring for children. It's interesting. It's fascinating.
Starting point is 00:11:31 It's a useful subject. But not everyone feels comfortable. Not everyone feels okay around bugs, all sorts of insects, bugs, and bodily fluids. like fluid is some water, liquid, yeah, and bodily fluids, like fluids, liquid that we have from our bodies. And also biology has anatomy, is the subject, the study of the body, how body parts are arranged. Yeah, so not everyone might be comfortable with this. being a doctor is super difficult. It's a burden, well, could be a burden.
Starting point is 00:12:19 It's kind of, it's heavy. A burden, heavy load that you carry. It's something difficult to deal with. And doctors have a burden of responsibilities. They have a lot of responsibilities. And especially when people die. So if something gets worse, yeah, it's just horrible. And the strain, the strain, like the pressure.
Starting point is 00:12:46 The psychological strain. Psychological strain is incredible. Strain like pressure, something that makes you feel nervous. And you can say that I couldn't handle that myself. Handle, like deal with, so I have no idea how doctors can handle it, this psychological strain. how they can deal with it. And it won't change in the future.
Starting point is 00:13:16 Or perhaps with AI, with robots, with innovative medicines, it might change. But instead of saying that, we say short of, which means not without, so not without some technological revolution. And a technological revolution is when things change massively for technology. So that would be like with AI, that was a technological revolution or with the internet. Thank you very much for listening. Thank you doctors and nurses for looking after us.
Starting point is 00:13:52 Thank you. We love you. We hug you. If you're a doctor or if you want to be a doctor, well done you. Seriously. We are proud of you. You save the day, which means you rescue people. Absolutely. Bye. Bye. Okay, when I sell my business, I want the best tax and investment advice.

Starting point is 00:15:59 they have to do and all they are put through by the organizations they work for and all the nonsense they have to put up with and then combine that with the fact they're pretty indispensable, that probably justifies quite a significant rise in salary, or a big one anyway.
