Starting point is 00:00:30 Hello, hello, dear listener and welcome into IEL speaking part three. We are discussing goals and ambitions in general. Rory here is super ambitious. Right, Rory? I try to be. Do people need to have goals? Well, they should have some idea of the direction their lives and efforts are heading. And otherwise it's difficult to see the point.
Starting point is 00:01:04 and they just end up floating on inertia, basically. And can you explain it further? Yeah, it's probably good, so you can prioritize and lead a good life on your own terms and not just do what other people tell you to. Otherwise, you might, I don't know, get depression or something because you have no control over your life. What goals should a society have? Well, ideally ones that benefit everyone in said society,
Starting point is 00:01:31 so building a place where people want to live and do well for themselves. But that's very general. How that actually looks will depend on the culture being focused on. Has that always been true? Well, no. Unfortunately, the influence of elites and other groups means that societies can wind up having some pretty skewed or messed up priorities that don't serve everyone.
Starting point is 00:01:54 They focus more on niche interests. What should people do to achieve their goals? Well, they need to identify them first, then develop a plan to reach them and gather the resources to bring them to fruition. It sounds simple, but that's a lot of work probably. Do you think that can change? I suppose the way they go about it might, but the overall process probably won't. It's pretty straightforward. What goals do young people usually have?
Starting point is 00:02:27 Well, probably less sophisticated ones compared to adults. but their needs and wants are a bit more basic. They could be things like making friends, being popular and trying to do well, or at least get by at school in various ways. What evidence do you have for that? Just my own experience of being a teacher and listening to young people for the better part of a decade. Is it necessary to give advice to children? Not always. I'm sure there are sometimes when they can be left to their own devices,
Starting point is 00:02:59 but if it's something serious, like a major life choice, then helping guide them through that process is, well, definitely the responsible thing to do. Will this also be true in the future? As long as kids are less experienced than adults, I would imagine so, yeah. Okay, when I sell my business, I want the best tax and investment advice. I want to help my kids, and I want to give back to the community. Ooh, then it's the vacation of a life. time. I wonder if my out of office has a forever setting.

We can have a goal, we can pursue a goal, achieve a goal, a goal of doing something. Ambition. It gives us some direction in life. But if you have direction, that just means you know what to do. do. If a person doesn't have any goals, they can end up floating along on inertia.
Starting point is 00:05:12 Right. First of all, this strange word, inertia. No, actually, inertia. Yeah, shush, is the sound. inertia. Lack of activity, unwillingness to make any effort. So you just, you are passive. Yeah, you're just floored through life and everything happens to you. Yeah, like things happen to you and you just follow life. So inertia, you end up doing something, you find yourself in a certain situation. So if there are no goals, you just end up floating a long on inertia or you end up being passive, doing nothing, floating, float along. Prioritize, so people should prioritize different things. So make a priority.
Starting point is 00:06:08 Prioritize. Prioritize. Decide what is the most important thing for you. And also what is the least important thing? To have control over your life. Yeah, not control. Control in, control over. You can say control your life or have control over your life.
Starting point is 00:06:28 Society might have goals. Careful, we don't usually use any article with society. So we say in society. Society should. But here the examiner can say a society, meaning like any society. But you say in our society people, ta-tata, or just like in society, people do. blah, blah, blah. We don't usually say in the society.
Starting point is 00:06:55 True. And people want to do well for each other usually. So people want to do good things in every society. And you can say that it depends on the culture. You can also use societies, different societies. And when we talk about society, you can talk about rich, people together we call them elite the richest the most powerful people so the elite of society or members of the elite the upper part of society and if they have too much influence over things then things can
Starting point is 00:07:39 become skewed or messed up so that just means they go in a particular direction and not in any others and if they do that they don't serve the interests of anyone apart from themselves So if something serves an interest, it does the job to help something. Yeah, like a skewed, not accurate or exact. And could you give us another example with the word skewed? Yeah. If you focus too much on exercise and not on other parts of your life, you might have some skewed priorities.
Starting point is 00:08:10 And phrase of verbs. We use the verb, end up doing something. But another one is wind up doing something. Yeah, like, find out. yourself in a certain situation, wind up doing something. We achieve our goals or we don't achieve our goals, goals on aims and we bring our goals to fruition. Listen, man. Yeah, we make them happen. Bring something to fruition. Yeah. So if you want to say that, yeah, like I'm, I bring my goals to life, you say I bring them to fruition.
Starting point is 00:08:56 Like plans, ideas can be brought to fruition or come to fruition. Hmm. And Rory gives us another example with Bring Something to Frution. Yeah, I hope to bring my plan of getting Delta 3 to fruition. What about IELTS? What can our listener say about IELTS? I hope to bring my dream of IELD's Band 7 to fruition. Young people usually have less sophisticated goals compared to adults.
Starting point is 00:09:28 So young people, blah, blah, compared to the elderly or older people. Maybe not the elderly. I think the elderly are kind of done with having goals. Well, I don't think so. I don't agree. No, why not? Yeah, there are some elderly people who still want to do things. They want to travel.
Starting point is 00:09:48 They want to see places. they're active, they climb freaking mountains, they do stuff. So I believe in old people, okay? Yeah, like who do stuff. They educate others, they help others. Like they become volunteers, like teachers. So yeah, lots of things in life. Good for them.
Starting point is 00:10:11 When I'm old, I will not have any goals apart from relaxing. Give advice to children. Careful, dear listener, we don't say advice. So give advice. When you give a lot of advice, it's still advice. A lot of advice, advice, advice. Some advice, a lot of advice. Give advice to children.
Starting point is 00:10:32 A synonym would be guide children through life. So parents should guide kids, children, youngsters through life. Guide through the preposition. Yeah, and speaking is informal, so you can use children, kids, youngsters in essays, we use more formal language, like youngsters, for example, and children, that's all. You use youngsters in an essay? Yeah, youngsters, why not? Really? I would say the young.
Starting point is 00:11:03 The young, okay. The young people... You wouldn't write youngsters? Like a synonym for children. Not in an essay. That's for me, though. Really? So you think it's informal?
Starting point is 00:11:15 I think it's quite informal, yeah. Really? Wow, okay. Yeah. I would say the young or young people. Okay, interesting. So youngsters, I see one, the listener, Band-Aid, a young person. Right. Okay, but yeah, now, what we agree on is that we don't use kids in essays.
Starting point is 00:11:35 Because that's informal. Use children. Hey, right, dear listener, goals and ambitions. Thank you very much for listening and we'll get back to you in our next episode. Bye. Yeah, what's wrong with the youngsters? What is wrong with youngsters? Ha ha ha.
Starting point is 00:12:01 Okay. When I sell my business, I want the best tax and investment advice. I want to help my kids, and I want to give back to the community.
