Hello, hello, dear listener and welcome into IEL speaking part three.
We are talking about working alone, working in groups in general.
Rory is very experienced in working alone and in groups.
So he is the authority, right, Rory?
Allegedly.
Why do some people prefer to work by themselves?
Well, I suppose it's easier to focus without the distraction of others, isn't it?
And on top of that, it can be quite draining having to coordinate with other people,
especially if they aren't the most organized in the world.
And can you explain it any further?
Well, yeah, if everyone is off doing their own thing,
then coming up with a plan for how to do things can be pretty difficult.
What advantages are there for students experiencing teamwork at school?
Oh, well, it could be a good way to get them.
accustomed to things they'll be expected to do in the future. Even if they wind up working in a
pretty isolated way, they still might want to do team sports or something which requires you
to interact with others to achieve various outcomes. So it's still good preparation for life.
And what about these advantages? Well, if they don't have the experience, then building up or
developing that skill might be difficult, at least at first, which could be pretty off-putting.
Not everyone has the same levels of maturity either, so dealing with people like that could also be
irritating if they are mucking about and wasting time. You can also get people who are just
dead weight in teams and still get credit for the group effort, which isn't very encouraging.
What group tasks are there in schools? Oh, loads. The most obvious would probably be
competitive sports and working in teams to win, but there can also be various collaborative
or cooperative tasks that students can complete as part of their regular education,
not to mention quiz teams and other things like that. What evidence do you have
for that? This is all just based on my experience and observation. I've been in various schools and
seen how things are done for a while. Should students learn to do group work? I think so. Like I said,
it's good preparation for later life, provided it's done well. Why? Because if you, well, we live in a society,
so we have to be able to cooperate with each other, don't we? Do you think that can change?
Not unless there's some radical change in how human beings live and work together.
We're a social species.
What makes a good leader?
That's a good question.
It's probably very context-specific,
but generally they should be charismatic so people find them inspirational
and responsible so they don't abuse their power or do anything silly with it.
Has this always been true?
Oh, no.
I think there are all kinds of examples from a cross-history of leaders
that were uninspiring or irresponsible but still got things done.
There are no absolutes and things like leadership, it seems.
What should a leader do to make team members want to follow them?
That probably depends on the culture,
but if they have a track record of success
and can be seen to work hard and make an effort,
then that seems to work for most people.
Will this be true in the future?
I think so, though if technology keeps developing the way it has been,
then being pretty tech savvy might also encourage others to fall in line.
Okay, when I sell my business, I want the best tax and investment advice.

Right, dearest now. So we work alone. People work by themselves alone or in groups. So some people prefer to work by themselves. They work alone. They work on their own. And it's easier to focus. If you work with people, there are distractions. So you can get distracted by other people or there are a lot of distractions.
one is eating, another one is shouting, another one is dancing, you know, like, so there are a lot of distractions.
It's impossible to focus.
And it's C1.
Is it?
Destruction is C1.
Yep.
Something that prevents someone from giving their attention to something else.
That's crazy.
Why is that C1?
I don't know.
Distraction.
On top of that, so if you want to add ideas, like additionally also, besides,
On top of that,
on top of that, it's difficult to work with people who are not organized.
So, some people prefer to work alone.
Students are involved in teamwork at school.
And children work in groups at school,
so they have a lot of group tasks or group work at school.
Right.
And they are called collaborative tasks.
Well, they can be. There's also cooperative tasks as well.
Cooperative when children cooperate with each other, they work with each other, and collaborative,
right, tasks work when they collaborate with each other.
So they can become accustomed to things. That means they get used to it.
Our favorite phrase of verb, wind up doing something.
Similar to end up doing something, wind up doing something.
So if learners or students don't do teamwork, they may wind up being antisocial, for example.
They may end up being alone.
Isolated.
So if you're isolated, you're off doing your own thing by yourself.
Yeah.
Come on, what level is isolated?
Oh, C2.
Oh, yes.
Yeah, it's like it depends on the meaning, but it's C1 or C2.
Nice. So it's still good to have.
Yeah. Like if it's used in the meaning of like happening only once,
like there are isolated cases of bullying, like maybe like one case.
So that's here too.
So students do team sports.
They interact with others.
They interact with other members of the team.
Teamwork, team sports.
And this is good preparation.
for life.
I think so anyway.
Whether students agree or not is a different matter.
And working in a team is a kind of a skill, right?
It's like one of the soft skills.
Drawbacks of the teamwork at school.
Drawbacks, disadvantages, negatives.
It might be off-puting.
That means it makes you not want to do it.
Off-puting de-lissness, C2 by 9,
slightly unpleasant or worrying that you don't want to get.
involved in any way. So for example, oh, this guy is very aggressive and he's off-putting.
If people are immature, then that could be off-puting. Or teamwork could be off-puting,
like unpleasant, worrying, I don't want to do this, it could be off-puting because
there are a lot of people, some people are lazy, it's difficult to get focused, there are many
distractions, immature people, and it could be very irritating, annoying.
And then the phrase of verb, dear listener, it could be annoying if people start mocking about.
Nobody likes it when people mock about.
They behave in a silly way, in a careless way, so they don't do anything, so they
mock about.
So you are focused on work and some people waste time.
I'm mocking about or fuffing about.
And the most hardworking person usually don't get credit for the group effort, for example.
So get credit for something.
And get credit for something or doing something.
Be given praise, approval.
Like, okay, well done, you know.
And usually like 10 people work in a group and who gets the credit, maybe the lazy one
who didn't do anything.
Oh yeah, well done, Boris, you know, like, hey.
You did nothing, but congratulations anyway.
And yeah, like, children may not get credit for working hard.
Okay, when I sell my business, I want the best tax and investment advice.
I want to help my kids, and I want to give back to the community.
Ooh, then it's the vacation of a lifetime.
I wonder if my out of office has a forever setting.

Group tasks at school, usually they are competitive sports, sports, games, basketball, football, volleyball,
and, for example, some games during the lesson.
collaborative tasks, cooperative tasks.
Students complete different quizzes.
And perhaps role plays as well, debates.
There we go.
Children take part in debates.
Well, they might.
Well, yeah, this is like a nice group task.
Or like different projects, like research projects, lab experiments, debates,
role plays, research presentations when children research a topic and then they make a presentation
on a topic. Quiz teams. Quiz when you have teams and then questions are asked and different teams
give answers. And students prepare for their later life when they participate in group work,
when they participate in teamwork, because we are social species.
We are social species.
That means we like to socialize.
Social creatures.
Social creatures, social animals.
We need to interact with each other.
We need to communicate with each other.
Hopefully anyway.
Otherwise, why are you taking a language exam?
A good leader should be charismatic.
Yeah, that means they make people want to follow them.
More people like them.
Inspirational.
They inspire other people.
to do things. And responsible. So leaders have good responsibilities. Good, like a lot of responsibilities.
And the key word here is abuse their power to abuse power. So a leader should not abuse their power.
Abuse of power means the use of power by someone that is harmful or morally wrong. So a leader has the power.
and they do bad things to different people just because they can.
Not very nice.
A good leader should not abuse their power.
Some leaders are uninspiring.
So they are not inspiring, uninspiring and irresponsible.
So this is a good way to use synonyms like inspirational, uninspiring.
Responsible, irresponsible.
And also we use a noun leadership, like.
a leader leadership.
What level is that?
Oh, Ben 9.
Really?
Have you just made that up?
I made that up.
Oh, C1.
Oh, C1, Ben 8.
So the set of characteristics that make a good leader.
Like some people lack leadership skills, leadership qualities.
And a leader makes team members follow them.
Them means a leader, because a leader could be he or she, so we can use them.
Speaking about technology, you can say tech-savvy.
Tech-savvy people know about technology, knowing about modern technology, special about computers,
so we need more tech-savvy workers.
And when people fall in line, what happens?
They do what they're told.
They follow the leader.
Yeah.
People follow the leader, fall in line.
It's an idiom.
And if a person in a company falls in line, they follow the rules.
So teachers usually fall in line with regulations at school.
So lots of people fall in line.
And could you give us another example with this phrase, fall in line, a nice idiom?
Oh, well, when people have clear leadership, it's easy for them to fall in light.
Thank you very much for listening.
sending you hugs, joy and love.
And we'll get back to you in our next episode.
Bye.
Bye.
Okay.
