The Senate has been pulling an all-nighter to form a resistance against the Trump regime.
It is an absolute disaster what they're trying to do.
The senators are united. They're forming a wall of kryptonite.
Let's welcome Senator Peters from Michigan. Senator, how are you?
Great to be with you. Yeah, great to be with you. You're right. We're forming a wall.
We're going to be fighting to the end. We've been going all night. I have my shift a little bit
later today and I'll be on the floor for, I think, about 70 minutes talking about this nominee that
we have who is a disaster for our country. And he comes through my committee. I'm the ranking
member, former chair of Homeland Security and Government Affairs. We oversee OMB. This is a gentleman that we've dealt with in the
past in OMB. We know what he did last time, and he's going to do, unfortunately, even worse things
in this term if he is confirmed. What are you going to do about Elon Musk? Everybody's worried
sick about it. I mean, he's a disaster a disaster this is illegal what are you guys going
to do yeah you're absolutely right and the fact right now that his folks are in the departments
right now getting uh information uh from uh from the departments uh getting into the tax records
so the records from the treasury department other kinds of contracts but it's really about data what I'm concerned about is privacy the the
they give basically a person who has a major social media platform and and is able to use data
you know if you look at today what is the most valuable commodity in the world it's not land
it's not oil like it used to be now it's data and the treasure trove of data that that musk is starting to scoop up illegally
is absolutely outrageous it's a full-on assault on the privacy of americans and he's basically
going to monetize this and become even wealthier this is about a billionaire using the level the
levers of government to enrich himself even more and to get even more power to be able to
manipulate folks through social media and through the algorithms. We're living in a very scary time
in American history. So what's the plan? What is the Senate plan to deal with this?
Well, we're going to call him out, continue to call him out. We're going to look at
litigation as well, court action to do that. Having public
outcry is critically important and it works. So, you know, we just saw an example of that
with a number of contracts basically being frozen by the Trump administration, you know,
and saying we're just not going to pay any contracts, which is illegal, by the way. Let's
be very clear. And that's what this battle is with Russell Vogt at OMB. He believes that basically the president can choose whether or not to spend money that has been appropriated
by Congress, by law, to help people across the country. And they just said, no, we're going to
freeze it. And, you know, I put it in perspective when I when I when we were when I was questioning
him in committee, I said, if Congress is appropriating money to help people in Head Start, to help
police departments have the resources they need, firefighters, to have folks that are in crisis
care, by law, you have to provide that to these individuals. Congress has determined that.
The president is supposed to faithfully execute the laws of the country. He's not above the law. We have a president who literally believes that he is above the law. And when I asked Mr. Vought, I said, you can't do that.
It's a violation of the Impoundments Act. He said, well, I think that law is unconstitutional.
And I'm like, well, what gives the OMB director the power to declare a law unconstitutional?
That's the Supreme Court. And he said, well, Senator, maybe you're misunderstanding me.
It's the president that has that authority.
And I go, how does the president have that authority?
He says, well, he just won an election.
That's how he has it.
It's like, no, he doesn't get to be a dictator.
You win an election, you still have to faithfully execute the laws.
This is something settled by Supreme Court decisions.
So we're going to have to bring another lawsuit.
I'm confident we will win because the law is very clear.
But in the meantime, I don't want to wait for court action.
We know that Trump is very good at delaying and delaying and delaying.
We've got to take immediate action.
We've got to energize people across the country to speak out.
And what we saw with this most recent effort is when people spoke out, they actually said,
well, OK, we'll put a freeze on it.
And quite frankly, it was because of action from folks that are listening to your podcast effort is when people spoke out, they actually said, well, okay, we'll put a freeze on it.
And quite frankly, it was because of action from folks that are listening to your podcast right now and people all across America who are being impacted in a real way. The calls that I got,
the panic calls that we got in our office, like we don't know if we're going to be able to pay
our employees. We don't know if we're going to be able to provide services. I had a group of
headstart folks saying we may not be able to help children next week. This is unacceptable. Government should never work this way. They're
trying to break government and they're doing it illegally. And it's time for action from all of
us. We have to wrap and get the senator to his next meeting. Like, OK, yeah, thank you.
Thank you for being with us. Oh, it's great to be with you. Sorry.
This is a crazy, crazy day, but thank you.
Thank you for what you're doing.
