What should you name your podcast? This is a big question. This is your show. It's your baby. You are pouring your heart and soul into this. And you can literally name your podcast anything you want. Well, almost anything. You have to look out for trademarked names. But other than that, the sky is the limit. So how do you choose a good name for your podcast? Well, if you want to help listeners discover your show, follow the tips that I share in today's episode. Have you been wanting to start a podcast for a while now?
but something's holding you back.
Maybe it's fear of putting yourself out there
or confusion about the technology.
I'm Sarah Mikital and on podcasting step by step,
I'll break down how to podcast with a little loving motivation
to give you the skills and the confidence you need
to finally launch that show of your dreams.
Let's get started.
When it comes to podcast names,
Clear is better than clever.
What are the keywords and phrases that you want to be known for?
It's a good idea to have them in your podcast name, also known as a podcast title.
Would your ideal listener be searching for this phrase in their podcast player?
Help them find you with an obvious name.
Here are a few things to look out for.
One, be careful using numbers.
There's a marketing podcast that I like and it's called Ticket 2 blog, but 2 is the number to
and it's not spelled out.
It's like numerical too.
And the number two throws people off when they are trying to find this show. And the co-hosts have actually gone beyond talking about just blogging to talking about content creation in general and the different things that content creators go through. And so having blog and their title sort of limits them. So try to feature plan your podcast title as much as you can. Show titles should be short and to the point. So they're easy to remember and
to talk about. You want people to be telling their friends about your show and have it be a title
that they can pronounce. Another reason to keep your title short, your podcast name will likely be on
your logo, and that is going to be really tiny on podcast playing apps. So keep your title short,
like four to five words max. You might want to use a power word or two, and these are words
that pack an emotional punch. According to a smart blogger, there are seven kinds of power words.
Fear, encouragement, lust, anger, greed, safety, and forbidden. So words like life-changing, results,
satisfy, money, triumph, foolproof. An example of greed power words that they use is Dave Ramsey's
book, The Total Money Makeover, A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness. So they're not saying that
greed is bad, but that it's tied to a desire. So if you want to make a successful business or
podcast or both, tie it to helping people lose weight to find a date or make money. That is what
people cannot get enough of and what they want to pay for. They want a better body, so lose
weight, look younger, sleep better to make more money. So things like retirement, making a million
dollars, I don't know, maybe a billion dollars at this point, and to get more love. So how can I get
the guy? How can I get the girl? How can I stop fighting in my marriage? So in your podcast,
you can make yourself the leader in any of these niches that you choose. Of course, you should
be podcasting about something that you are really passionate about. But if that happens to fall
into the categories of sex, money, or beauty, well then you're a little bit ahead of the game.
Now, I mentioned that your title should be clear and obvious and short, and you might be thinking, well, there are a lot of popular podcasts out there with names that don't give any hint as to what they're about. And that's true. But most of these podcasts either came with a built-in audience from somewhere else or they've been around for a really long time and have had years to build up a fan base and they also have first-mover's advantage. Right now, we've got more than 700.
thousand podcasts out there. So we want to help people make it as, we want to make it as easy as possible
for people to find us. So write down a few podcast title options and then ask other people to describe
your show based on what they can guess from your title. So tell them your title and then say,
what do you think my podcast is about? Then you want to check to make sure that no one is already
using your podcast name or the podcast name that you want to use.
Technically, you can use a name that's already out there if it's not trademarked.
However, some podcast players aren't going to pick up your show if the name is already being used by someone.
Plus, why not use something new so you don't have to compete in the search?
Also, check to see if the website domain and the social media handles are available for the podcast name you want.
If they're not, it's not a big deal.
You can use a variation of the podcast name.
And one more thing.
don't keyword stuff your podcast title. In the past, some people put extra words in their title to
help in search. So someone might have had the podcast name, the best marketing podcast,
colon, Seth Godin, Tim Ferriss, Richard Branson. And they put those people's names in there
because they're popular names. And when people would search for them, the best marketing podcast
title would come up. This is just an example. I don't know if that podcast ever existed. But
don't keyword stuff because Apple Podcasts will kick you out. So to sum up this episode,
keep your podcast title short and sweet and choose clarity over cleverness. And if you can do both,
thank you for listening to podcasting step by step. You are now one step closer to launching that
podcast you've been dreaming about. But I want to get you even closer. I created a free guidebook for you
