Influential Introvert: Communication Coaching for Professionals with Performance Anxiety - Podcast Mindset: "Let Future You Take Care of It"

Episode Date: May 28, 2020

Are you overthinking something right now and can’t seem to move forward? Today, I have a simple yet very powerful mindset mantra that will get you moving in the right direction.   I had a mind-blow...n experience this week. One of my online business mentors, Elizabeth Goddard, said, "Let Future You take care of it."   Whoah! So simple yet such a powerful mindset shift.   Here's what Elizabeth means: Have faith that Future You will have the experience and the context to make the right decisions.   So often we tie ourselves in knots about whether we should try this or that. Should I start a podcast? Should I move to Paris?   But Present You can't know the answers because you don't have the experience of trying yet.   The job of Present You is to try, experiment, and play. To take action on something now and let Future You decide if it's working, if you love it, or if you want to try something else.   Future You has more information and, therefore, more answers. Yes, Present You will help out Future You by putting in effort and doing the work. But save your worries and ‘what ifs’ for Future You to figure out.   The job for Present You is to make a decision and take the next step. *** Hello. Starting point is 00:00:00 Are you overthinking something right now and you just can't seem to move forward? Today I have a very simple yet very powerful mindset mantra that will get you moving in the right direction. Have you been wanting to start a podcast for a while now, but something's holding you back? Maybe it's fear of putting yourself out there or confusion about the technology. I'm Sarah Mikital and on podcasting step by step, I'll break down how to podcast with a little loving motivation. to give you the skills and the confidence you need to finally launch that show of your dreams. Let's get started. I had a mind-blown experience this week.
Starting point is 00:00:44 One of my favorite online business mentors, Elizabeth Goddard, said, Let future you take care of it. Now, that might sound very simple, but if you sit back and just think about it, it's a very powerful mindset shift and I think some of the most profound things just come in the smallest packages. So here is what Elizabeth meant by that. Have faith that future you will have the experience and also the context to make the right decision. So how often do we tie ourselves in knots about whether we should try this or whether we should try that? Should I start a podcast? Should I move to Paris? But present us can't know the answers because we don't have the experience of trying anything yet.
Starting point is 00:01:37 So the job of present you is to try to experiment, to play. And I really love this idea. Present us can't go wrong. Our job is just to take one step forward. And future you can to decide whether it's working or not. working or not, whether what you're doing makes sense, whether you love it, whether you hate it, whether you want to try something else. I remember back in 2007, 2008, I wanted to go back to Italy. I had spent a few months there before and I was just ready to go back there for at least a
Starting point is 00:02:18 few months. I was living in New York City at the time, and it was in the throes of the economic crisis. So really, it was just kicking off. So it was a time when a lot of people were scared about making any sudden movements. They were very afraid of their job about doing anything sudden. I was, like, working in Manhattan right next to Lehman Brothers. I saw it close. I saw people leaving with their boxes of things. It became a Barclays bank, which I actually ended up working for when I went in, when I moved to London, but that's a separate story. So it's an economic, the beginnings of an economic crisis. But I wanted to quit my nice corporate job and move to Italy. And when I was telling people this, everybody was saying, you are out of your mind. You have such a good job.
Starting point is 00:03:10 Why would you throw it all away? You're going to ruin your left. don't leave your job right now, just sit tight, maybe in the future you could do this. And everybody was telling me this, right? We don't need to listen to people who don't share our dreams, who don't have any experience in what we want to do. So I love my parents so much. But they're very traditional, stable people. Well, my mom did study abroad when she was in college.
Starting point is 00:03:38 I will give her that. But she's not the type who would just pack up and be like, you know what? feel like moving to this other country. So, and this was before I became an Italian citizen. So I didn't have any prospects of getting a job. I just wanted to go to Italy for a few months. And so I did. My job said, you know, we love you. We don't want you to go. We see such a good future for you. But if you leave now, we don't believe in sabbatical. So you're not going to be able to come back. I didn't even ask for this. I didn't, I don't even think I knew what a sabbatical was, to be honest with you. at the time.
Starting point is 00:04:15 They were just like, we love you, don't go. But if you go, the door is closed, essentially. And so I said, yeah, I mean, they didn't make it easy for me to leave at all. But in the end, I was like, well, thank you. I had such an amazing time at this job. I really loved my colleagues, but I wished them well. And then I went to Italy for a few months. Had a great time.
Starting point is 00:04:39 Made some great friends. You know, lived just a little. in Rome for a while, one of my favorite cities that I keep going back to. And at the time, I didn't know that I could apply for dual citizenship with Italy, which is something that I did a few years after that. So when the time came up where I had to go back to the States, I moved back to New York. My job called me back and said, we want to have you back. They gave me a promotion, title promotion, but also salary of promotion, which was fantastic. And none of that would have happened had I not taken that step to try something new, right?
Starting point is 00:05:22 Maybe I would have not had a good time in Italy. Maybe I wouldn't have gotten my job back in New York, but something else would have happened, right? We get very caught up and thinking, oh, I need to make the right decision before I move on. And that's where we get stuck. we have this false idea that there is only one right decision and there's many right decisions. And so the only way we're going to figure out which one we like best is to try different things and to experiment. So the job for present you is just to make a decision and to take the next step. And then once you have the experience, future you can figure everything out.
Starting point is 00:06:06 all of the what-ifs and, well, I don't know, should I do this? Let Future You worry about that. Future You is going to have all the information. And Future You is an amazing person. I mean, you're amazing too right now. But like, when I think of the idea of Future Me, I'm like, oh, yes, Future Me will take care of it. Like, I love Future Me. I can't wait to meet Future Me. So, don't worry about being perfect or having all the answers right now. You're not supposed to have all the answers right now. And I think that's such a freeing feeling, future you. has the answers and all you need to do is take that next step. So I would love to hear what is your next step? What are you really excited about? And what is that one thing you can do to get yourself
