Should you put your podcast on YouTube? If you do it the right way, it could help you grow your
podcast audience, but if you do it the wrong way, it could end up hurting you. I will dig into
why on today's episode. Have you been wanting to start a podcast for a while now, but something's
holding you back? Maybe it's fear of putting yourself out there or confusion about the technology.
I'm Sarah Mikital and on podcasting step by step, I'll break down how to podcast with a little
loving motivation to give you the skills and the confidence you need to finally launch that show of
your dreams. Let's get started. As podcasters, we want to do what we can to help people discover
and listen to our show. This means being in all the podcast directories like Apple Podcasts, but should
we be on YouTube as well? My podcast media host Libson lets you automatically publish your podcast
episodes to your YouTube channel if you have one. And while that might sound like a nice marketing bonus,
I would not do this.
People go to YouTube to watch videos, and there's a good chance that they will get annoyed.
If they hit play on your video, and all they get is a static image and audio.
Now, some podcasters might say, well, people can listen to YouTube while they're doing other things.
They're doing the dishes or whatever.
Well, maybe.
I don't actually know anyone who does that, do you?
And there's data to support that people do not want to listen to our shows on YouTube.
Daniel J. Lewis from the Audacity to Podcast calls Audio-only YouTube uploads fake video,
and he includes audiograms that are on YouTube, and audiograms are those static images with
sound waves that move in sync with the audio. So these fake videos might have thousands of views,
but Daniel says that this is deceiving, according to his research, and I will link to this in the show
notes. He says that most fake videos lose 90 to 95% of their audience within only 90 seconds. And this
is going to hurt your rankings in YouTube because the abandonment is going to tell the algorithm
that your content is not worth watching. Also, fake videos don't get a lot of likes. They don't get a lot
of comments or subscribes. And all of these things are going to be taken into consideration when
the algorithm is deciding whether your video should be ranked up or down. Then later, if you
start posting real videos, YouTube might not be that keen to share them because your channel has a
reputation for low engagement and high abandonment and YouTube wants people to stay on their
platform. Having said that, podcasters can use YouTube to grow their audience by creating
real videos. So you could video record the interviews that you do, or you could go live
on a social platform and then upload that video. Another idea is to video yourself offering some
top tips from your show and then pointing people to your podcasts for even more great content.
For example, you could do a video on five tips to declutter your house in a weekend.
Then share those tips and say, for more great tips to de-stress your life, subscribe to the
XYZ podcast for free. And then you can include a link to your website where they will find
different ways to subscribe. So tease some value and then point them to your podcast.
Even if you create amazing videos, it doesn't mean that people are going to discover you.
Here are some top tips on how to rank in YouTube. One, make videos that are five minutes or longer.
So I mentioned that YouTube wants to keep people on their site. So it ranks longer videos better.
As long as people are actually watching these videos, you're not going to.
to rank if you post a 20-minute video and then people bail after 30 seconds. So how do you hook your
audience and get them to stay? Brian Dean, who is the founder of a company called Backlinko,
runs all sorts of tests to find out what actually moves the needle when it comes to ranking in
YouTube. And he has more than 247,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel. And one of the things
that he shared in one of his videos was the PPP formula. So preview, proof, and preview.
preview. So he says to get right to the point of your video within the first 15 seconds,
viewers should know what they're going to get. Then proof, who are you? Why are you qualified
to be talking about this? And then preview. He says, tell people what they'll learn in a
slightly different way. So give them an example or go deeper in some way. And another great
tip that Brian gives is to have a really specific call to action at the end of your video. So
ask them a very specific question and then tell them to write the answer in the comments.
Another way to get discovered on YouTube is to use keywords that your ideal listener would be
searching for. So use relevant keywords in your video title with the most important word or phrase
at the beginning of the headline. And then use these keywords in your description and tags for
the video. And once you do start showing up in the suggested videos, use a thumbnail that's going to
grab people's attention. So the thumbnail is the still image for the video that shows up in search.
You may have noticed that a lot of these thumbnails are people making ridiculously funny faces.
I wouldn't even say funny, just ridiculous faces. And they've got bold colors, big text. And they do
this to grab your attention and to set themselves apart from similar videos. And finally, let people
know when you've got a new video up. So the first 24 hours are especially important.
So let people know on social media, email people on your email list.
The more likes and comments that you get the higher you'll rank.
So let people know that there's a video there.
To sum all of this up, you definitely don't have to be on YouTube.
If you are just starting out with your podcast, I would just focus on that one thing at a time.
But if you are curious about YouTube, you want to explore it, post real videos and not fake ones,
You only have so many hours in the day. So spend that time on what you enjoy, on what you find value in, on what's going to bring value to other people. Let's not waste our time on fake YouTube videos that people are going to abandon after only a few seconds.
Thank you for listening to podcasting step by step. You are now one step closer to launching that podcast you've been dreaming about. But I want to get you even closer. I created a free guidebook for you with Actionable.
