Starting point is 00:00:00 From late-nighter.com, it's late night last night with John Schneider. And now, here's John. Hello, everybody, and welcome to Late Night Last Night here today to talk about what we saw on late night TV on October 1st, 2025. It was the first day of October. and there's a lot to get into from late night last night. So let's start actually with Jimmy Fallon's show. We'll start with the Tonight Show where he has a guest host on with him. That would be Doja Cat, who is the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this weekend.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Very excited to see her perform on S&L, but exciting to see her actually on Fallon and doing some bits as well. So first, Jimmy's going to come out and do the monologue. He's going to talk a lot about the government shutdown, which will be, since it's the first day of the shutdown, down a big topic across late night. Last night, there's this bit that Fallon does every now and then when a statue is erected that doesn't really look like somebody. So Tina Turner's statue was a topic of conversation. And of course, he had the other statues, the famous Ronaldo one, other ones all communicating
Starting point is 00:01:15 with the Tina Turner statue. So that's a very funny moment in the monologue. Tarik is going to do a recreate a scene from the Real Housewives of Miami. And that's when Doja Cat is going to come out for her first appearance of the night. And sometimes you've seen Questlove and Tarik do these for The Bachelor or Love Island. Well, this time we get Doja Cat and Tarreek doing a scene from The Real Housewives. Then we are going to get another edition of hashtags. I believe we spoke about this last week a little bit, but hashtags was not around on the show for a very long time.
Starting point is 00:01:45 And for the second week in a row, we get another hashtag segment, this time with Doja alongside Jimmy Fallon. He's going to do hashtag, my roommate is weird. There's some really good funny moments there. And then Doja Cat's going to do an on-brand style. elevator pitch or series of pitches, which is, of course, Jimmy's new show that he's been promoting every night. And we're going to get some pitches from Questlove, from Steve Higgins. And then we're going to get a pitch from a naked man. And it's a very interesting one. So I'll play it for you. Yes. Okay. We live in a world where pop music can often sound stale and derivative. But
Starting point is 00:02:18 V is something refreshing, different and new. That was so nice. Thank you. I like that. But it also gives me a rise in my leave eyes. Oh, hey, come on, get out of here, everybody. Get past. Yeah, and it's going to get a little raunchy. So a very funny moment there where if you watch the clip, you know, it seems like a lot of normal pitches, but then we get this naked man,
Starting point is 00:02:46 and they're like, ah, we don't want to hear from you, and it's going to give him a rise. So we do find out that that is Seth Herzog, the show's warm-up comic who is there, who doesn't really make a lot of on-screen appearances, but he does do it here. the naked man and i thought it was really funny so great moments there then doge is going to do an interview uh she's going to talk about how she's really into fortnight and how she's getting her
Starting point is 00:03:08 own mother of thorns skin they're going to play a real or fake game about fortnight and then she's going to sit on her throne then she's going to talk about her new album v or life and how into love she is and how some of her music inspired an 80s style like from an 80s style with janet jackson and prince and michael jackson working with jack antonoff and then they're going to do some 80s dance moves together. So it's a really Doja heavy night, similar to the way that we got Miley Cyrus co-hosting the show in the past, Megan the Stallion. You know, Fallon, it does a great job integrating the co-hosts in the night. They're going to play song scramble where they're going to sing lyrics of one song over the melody of another song. And then the other guest of the night is Druski, a comedian
Starting point is 00:03:46 musician who talks with Jimmy and Doja about Jack Harlow, hyping him up, him presenting at the SPs this year. They show a clip of a very funny moment of Drusky going up to present at the SPs, but then forgetting his card on his seat. Being on the new Justin Bieber. album and Kaisenat live streams. He has a new tour where he mixes music and comedy and comes out dressed like people like Usher. So it is a great interview with Drewski. I know a lot of people are really happy to see him on the Tonight Show.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Blood Orange is going to perform somewhere in between from the album Essex Honey. So a really solid night at Fallon. I think having a co-host to mix things up really brought a lot of energy to the show. So I was happy to see that. The other really interesting show of the night was Kimmel, of course. He is having his third night in Brooklyn. in the third of five nights. We're going to have Guillermo coming out dressed like a pigeon,
Starting point is 00:04:32 who he's been dressed like different New York-centric things all week long. He's going to talk about the government shutdown and say that there is something good about the government shutdown. So I thought this was interesting. There is some silver lining to the shutdown, according to their official website. During the shutdown, our friends at the FCC will cease their response to consumer complaint and inquiry phone lines. I'm not a lawyer, but I think means we can now say whatever we want on TV.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Interesting timing there, if that is true, that the FCC will no longer be taking complaints during the government shutdown. He's going to talk about Ted Cruz's bizarre call to unity, where Ted Cruz is going to talk about both sides getting together. And then has a little bit of a slip up where he said, let's just stop attacking pedophiles. and this, of course, will create a great amount of content for people like Kimmel and Seth and the Daily Show as well. Then there's this bit, I think he was the only one who addressed last night. I'm curious that this is going to come up tonight on October 2nd. But they show a lot of news, like Fox News people talking about Baron Trump, bringing a girl
Starting point is 00:05:42 home to the Trump Tower, which only Kimmel addressed. But he had some really good lines about that and comparing it to Amy Carter. So I thought that was really good stuff there from Kimmel. Emily Blunt is his first guest. She's promoting the smashing machine where, if you remember yesterday, Dwayne the Rock Johnson was on Fallon talking about that one. She talks about bringing her kids to Kimmel and then what their kids get impressed by. So a lot of kid talk working on the film.
Starting point is 00:06:06 And then Kimmel getting seasick on a trip with her and her husband, John Krasinski. So they show some pictures of that as well and them going fishing. Then we get Evan Moss, Backracks, who's from the Bear, talks about Fantastic Four as well, big summer for Evan. They tell a story about waiting for the cars at the Emmys, both Kimmel and Eben as they were waiting out there, meeting some fans on the streets, and then Evans' wife being superstitious
Starting point is 00:06:28 and his upcoming Broadway debut. Geese is going to perform on the show, performs taxes from the album getting killed, and then Big Daddy Kane is sitting in with the house band at Kimmel, Clito and the Cleetones last night. So that is the third night of Brooklyn shows. I will head over to the Daily Show next because we were just talking about Smashing Machine
Starting point is 00:06:47 and Benny Safi is the main guest on the Daily Show. Ronnie Chang is hosting again last night, talking a lot about the government. government shut down, Trump making these weird Mexican AI videos. And then they're going to go to, they're going to have a remote segment to the national parks where Josh Johnson is there and talking about everyone's already pooping in the Grand Canyon since the government's been shut down. But Benny Safty is there talking about smashing machine, how it was filmed with a long
Starting point is 00:07:09 lens and getting close to the character. So if you're really into this new film, we got promo all over late night with the rock last night, Emily Blunt and Benny Safty here tonight. Michael Costa is also going to appear, correspondent doing a bit about some money making. and all of that. So it is a fun night at The Daily Show, and I thought Ronnie Chang absolutely killed it again. Over at Colbert last night,
Starting point is 00:07:30 he talks about the government shutdown and opens up with this line. I tell you, folks, I definitely did not call this one, but evidently the late show has outlasted the United States federal government. Yeah, hard to believe, but it's still there. He's going to talk a lot about the government shutdown
Starting point is 00:07:49 and the crews slip up. He's going to do this bit called Meanwhile, which I tell you that he does like about once a week. It's an extra segment. It's sort of a way for Colbert to do extra monologue jokes with visuals. And he's going to do this joke that I think was a pretty big surprise to him where he's going to talk about the theory of panspermia. And I don't believe he sees the graphics beforehand.
Starting point is 00:08:13 But I'll show you if you're watching our video today on YouTube what it looked like as he was very surprised to see what the graphics department came up with here which is sort of like like pornographic uh in a way and uh he could not believe that they were able to get that on tv there's like oh we got to put that black bar there uh just to make sure that some stuff is is being covered up but yeah i mean i saw a lot of hilarious youtube comments about this including the fact that kimmel the night before was like hey colbert uh you know when are you're going to start going nuts you'll got eight months left so this was great uh we're actually going to get the first guest julia roberts mentioned the dinner plate later on
Starting point is 00:08:51 on screen and be like, what was going on before I came out here? So it was very funny to see that whole thing with Colbert at pretty good, like, unscripted moment, I believe, where he was just genuinely shocked by what the graphics department came up with. Julie Roberts is the star of After the Hunt. It's her third time on Colbert, the first in 2022. She's going to talk about being an empty nester and almost crying that her kids are not at home, working on the film with her co-stars, and then, you know, opening up New York
Starting point is 00:09:17 Film Festival, making some banana bread, and of course the 25th anniversary of Averrokovich. So great to see Julia on one of the shows last night. Sam Smith back-to-back nights on Colbert, Sam, who was on the show the previous night, performs to be free. And then off of the show, we get another performance of Ait No Sunshine that's posted directly to Colbert's YouTube channel and on the CBS website for Colbert. Over at Seth last night, we're going to get a closer look about day one of the government shutdown and how before he was president, Trump always blamed the president for government shutdown.
Starting point is 00:09:48 So a little bit of hypocrisy that Seth was pointing out there. Renee Rap is the main guest on Seth, and of course, Renee performed on Kimmel the night before, where Seth was also a guest appearance. So they talk about bumping into each other and seeing each other backstage. Their dressing rooms were right next to each other. And then here is their very cute interaction. Because we were talking about, you know, you're not my kind of thing, not my cup of tea. Yeah. Which you're getting finer and finer.
Starting point is 00:10:14 Thank you so much. You really are. We were talking about it. I'm aging like a fine wine that you're never going to drink. Not at all. Not at all. You're not going near it. Yeah, of course, Seth is not for Renee, but still, it is a very funny interaction where they just
Starting point is 00:10:33 talk about how much Renee adores Seth. And clearly, they have a great friendship. So it's great to see them together on the show. It's her third time on set. The last time was in January of 2024. And she's going to talk a lot about her new album. Of course, we just saw that performance on Kimmel, but what it's like to sell out Madison Square Garden and, you know,
Starting point is 00:10:50 listening to her dad as a kid, yell on the phone and, you know, give commands and how that spread down to her and how she is able to run her show. I thought it was a great interview with Renee. A good, long interview with Renee. Christian Slater is also going to be there for if I had legs, I kick you. Of course, Conan was promoting that earlier in the week on Colbert. So, you know, some of the main films that are really being promoted this week include the, if I, legs, I kick you and, of course, smashing machine. And I'd say those are probably the main projects that we're looking at this week of late night. He's going to talk about getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and says fifth time on a set's show and performing a play at Radio
Starting point is 00:11:24 City. So nice interaction there. But overall, a fun night of late night. I thought it was really good. It's just a lighter night. Nothing too huge in terms of storylines. Like we got the first two days with Conan on Colbert and then of course the Kim on Cold Bear switch up. But Doja Cat becoming a co-host on Fallon. I always think those things are really interesting because it's a great moment and really exciting to get to know these people even more, especially some musicians. But I also wonder as like a fan of late night TV, how it sets up what Doja might do in the future, being a musical guest on SNL this weekend. Is it possible that Doja Cat will host SNL in the future after seeing how she did as a host on Fallon? I think those are things that are interesting and why I wanted
Starting point is 00:12:04 to start the show with that tonight. But of course, the government shutdown continues. There's a lot of interesting topics that are happening in politics that I'm sure that will be covered again on late night tonight, where Jimmy Kimmel is going to have Jeremy Allen White and Bruce Springsteen on the show. so a huge night for Kimmel. Fallon's going to have Mark Ruffalo and Edison Ray. So a big night there. Colbert will have Lady Gaga on the show. Seth has Iwo Debris, who is in that film with Julia Roberts.
Starting point is 00:12:27 So we'll see that. And then the daily show, Ronnie is going to be hosting for the final night of the week here tonight. I will not be back here tomorrow for late night last night. I'm going to be doing a little bit of traveling. So, of course, if there's any huge late night stories, I will cover them next week. But I hope you all enjoy late night last night. And then I'll be back on Tuesday to talk about anything that happened. over the weekend and late night and what happens next Monday night.
Starting point is 00:12:50 So really enjoyed my second week here doing late night last night with all of you.
