From late-nighter.com, it's late night last night with John Schneider.
And now, here's John.
Hello, everybody, and welcome to Late Night Last Night here on this Tuesday
to talk about everything we saw in Late Night on Monday, October 6th.
So let's dive right into it.
We had four shows on the air last night that we cover here.
Stephen Colbert's show, the late show on CBS, is dark this week.
So no coverage of that show for now.
But we do have Kimmel on ABC.
We have The Daily Show on Comedy Central.
And on NBC, we have The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Myers.
So so many things to talk about from last night.
Of course, we need to start with the biggest story in late night, which is Taylor Swift being on Fallon's show last night.
You talk about the release of her new album, The Life of a Showgirl.
And it was Taylor Mania.
the audience was screaming, talking about Taylor Swift all night long, and, you know, Jimmy's
going to open up the show, dancing to the fate of Ophelia. Then Taylor's going to come out and
talk about writing the life of a show girl. We get a very extended interview with Taylor there.
She's going to talk about her engagement in the ring and, you know, what it was like to record
that podcast that you may have seen, New Heights with Travis and Jason Kelsey, and then for her
to be proposed to right after that. So I thought that this was a really great moment.
I think for Travis, the podcast was just sort of like a distraction sort of ruse to keep me not looking out the windows of the house.
It was all happening. Was the backyard normal when you got there?
I don't, every time he does the podcast, it's not like he like blacks out all the windows.
It's like the draught, it's like just black out drapes on every single window of the whole house.
And you may have seen those beautiful pictures of the proposal. So I think the timing of when the proposal happened,
was in question for a lot of Swifties of like did this take place a long time ago
and were they keeping it a secret but it seems to be that this did occur right after that
podcast was recorded so she talks a lot about that then she's going to talk about getting
her masters back which she talked about of course on New Heights and it was a great conversation
she has here Jimmy and Taylor are going to play a game next and they're trying to figure out
how to call the game they settle on calling it that's so true a reference to Gracie Abrams
song but Jimmy's going to say five things that are rumored
heard about Taylor Swift, and one of them is true.
So the first one is that Taylor turned down the Super Bowl,
which is now Super Bowl halftime shows,
is Bad Bunny's going to be performing that one coming up in February.
But there's a rumor that Taylor turned it down
because the NFL wouldn't allow her to own her own performance footage.
So she's going to explain what happened there and if this is true or not.
Like Jay-Z has always been very good to me.
Yes.
Our teams are really close.
Like, they sometimes will call and say,
how does she feel about,
I don't know.
And that's not like an official offer or an official,
or like a conference room conversation.
Like, our teachers are really close.
How does she feel about it in general?
And we've been,
we're always able to like tell him the truth,
which is that like I.
So no official offer, according to Taylor,
but let's hear the rest of her response.
Love with a guy who does that sport on that actual field.
Like, that is violent chest.
That is gladiators without swords.
That is dangerous.
I am the whole season, I am locked in on what that man is doing on the field.
Can you imagine if like he's out there every single week, like putting his life on the line,
doing this very dangerous, very high pressure, high intensity sport?
And I'm like, I wonder what my choreo should be.
So that's your answer.
So I don't think we're going to get Taylor to do the Super Bowl halftime show anytime soon.
Maybe after Travis Kelsey retires, that's something to look back at.
four other things that he said are rumored.
So one of them is at Selena Gomez's recent wedding,
Taylor joked about Selena beating Taylor to the altar,
which, of course, she talks about how she would never in her speech
take attention away from Selena.
So that was not true.
There's a rumor that Taylor is walking a mystery dog in Florida.
She addresses that and says she doesn't think she's ever actually walked a dog.
And that Travis Kelsey can be heard harmonizing on opalite,
which is not true.
Travis, not on, not on any music on the new album.
But the one that is true is about Ed Sheeran,
one of Taylor's great friends, finding out about her engagement on
Instagram. And she explains why.
He doesn't have a phone.
He doesn't have a phone.
Did he write a whole album about an old phone that he had or something?
But he doesn't have one that works.
Yes, true. That is true.
So he doesn't have a phone.
And this is like one thing I love about him.
It's very eccentric.
trick. Yeah, it's just a really interesting, you know, to get that story, get that background and find out about Ed finding out the way that everyone else did. So that is a great story there from Taylor. She's going to talk about the fate of Ophelia and The Life of a Showgirl a lot. And then they do this great segment, which I really loved, which is sort of this podcast set up on the Tonight Show stage where they're going to play a bunch of songs from her new album. The audience is going to sing along and she's going to explain her thoughts behind some of the tracks there. I thought it was some great insight.
If you haven't heard the album yet, it's a great addendum to listening to the album.
I thought it was a fantastic segments there.
Taylor's also going to explain to Jimmy why she came on his show, which I think is something
really interesting if you follow late night and you know how big of a guest Taylor Swift is,
why she chose to go to Fallon over, let's say, Kimmel or Colbert.
She actually is going to be on set later in the week, so we'll talk about that in a moment.
But I thought that this was fascinating.
This is her seventh time on Fallon, first since 2022, but she's only been a couple of
couple times on Seth, once on Colbert.
Like, it's one of those things where clearly she favors going on Fallon's show, and she explains
why here.
I want to say that about you.
That's why everybody loves to come see you.
You do extra.
You give us a buzzer.
You play a game with us that has no rules.
And you make this so fun for us to come and talk about the work that we made that we
worked so hard on and love.
And you listen to it and you, like, actually care about what we make.
Everybody who comes on this show loves you.
Thank you, Beth.
Yeah.
And I think that this is a fascinating comment.
Obviously, it's Taylor being super nice to Jimmy.
But I also think that this is great considering, you know,
I guess some of the other late night shows getting to hosts getting together last week
when Kimmel was in Brooklyn and how people online were saying that, you know,
Fallon is a different type of show.
Doesn't necessarily address all the politics.
And he's keeping his head down.
And I do think that he gets a lot of hate for that at times.
But I do think that when you have someone as big of a star as Taylor Swift,
justifying that the tonight show is the show that she wants to go off.
on and how great it is.
I thought that was in a really important moment for Fallon last night.
And it was a fantastic interview.
Carrie Russell is the second guest,
and she's also going to talk about Taylor a bit,
how Taylor Swift on her MySpace said that she thought Carrie Russell is the coolest
person ever.
And I think we had a story on that on late-nighter as well,
being into Lenny Kravitz when she was young and working on the new show,
The Diplomat.
So Carrie was a great guest.
We had the format as the musical guest.
That's the new Nate Bruce band from Fun and other projects as well.
So Nate's been on a bunch of late-nine shows before,
but great to hear his voice.
voice again on Fallon. So clearly the moment of the night is Taylor Swift talking about a new
album on Fallon. You have to start there. So I think it was a great night for this tonight show.
Staying with NBC. Let's go over to late night. Let's talk about what happened on Seth. He's actually
going to promote his own Taylor Swift episode coming up on Wednesday, which is a takeover.
So we're still very interested to see what's going to happen tomorrow when Taylor Swift heads
over to Seth's show. He's going to do his monologue on Trump speaking at the Navy and then get into a
closer look where he will talk about Trump taking advantage of the Democrats during the shutdown and
how he may start firing people. So there's a lot of talk about that, including not too much
shutdown talk on Fallon last night, clearly, but throughout the other late night shows a good amount
there. And then he's going to get into referencing, you know, Trump's obsession with Portland and
wanting to send, you know, troops down to Portland based on some footage he saw on TV. And I thought
that this was an amazing meta rant here from Seth talking about not belmont.
believing everything you see on TV.
Let me tell you, don't believe everything you see on TV.
I mean, even on this show, this show is called Late Night,
but it's like four in the afternoon right now.
So, I mean, we know this, right?
We're the huge fans of Late Night.
So we know that he tapes in the afternoon,
but I thought it is great that he is talking about that on the show
and, you know, taking the curtain open and revealing that to all of his watchers.
You see these buildings behind me?
That's not really the city.
And by the way, I don't blame you if you didn't know that.
They just told me.
Every night after the taping ends, I just stand here and I wave at everybody.
While the crew laughed behind my back, and I assume they were still laughing at the jokes from the show.
But no, it turns out this is a picture.
And I mean, of course it's a picture, right?
New Yorkers aren't awake at 1 a.m. with their lights on.
They're all awake at 1 a.m. steering at the ceiling with the lights off,
listening to someone outside scream, hey, yo, Anthony, where's our Uber?
It was a great rant.
I love that stuff from Seth when he did that.
So pulling the curtain back, I thought it was fantastic.
He has two guests on the show.
Kirsten Dunst is on the show for her third time promoting the Roofman movie,
talking about her husband, Jesse Plymonds,
and how much they love Seth and will only do his show.
So, you know, a little bit of a comeback there from when Taylor is talking about doing Thallon,
but I love Kirsten's talking about they'll do his show, Seth's show.
And then there's a good moment if you're an SNL fan,
where Kirsten's talking about wanting to play an A-hole in some movie next.
That's the role that she really wants to go after.
And Seth suggests that she does an on-screen adaptation of the two A-holes,
the very famous Jason Sadekis and Kristen Wig characters from Saturday Night Live.
Tony Shalub is also on Late Night, and he's promoting the new series,
Breaking Bread and Going Around the World to Film It and talking about eating so much of bread,
but he still was able to lose a little bit of weight.
So good interview there from Tony.
Let's head over to Kimmel on ABC, where he had a huge week at the end of the week
with surprise appearances from John Stewart and Matt Damon,
capping off an amazing week for Kimmel in Brooklyn.
But he is back in L.A.
where he says it's great to be back,
where he doesn't have to pretend to root for the Yankees.
He now talks about a poll that was released
where he's now more popular than the president of the United States.
We talked about that in an article now on Late Nider.
And he has a great line here to Trump.
The guy who keeps saying I have no ratings?
Well, that makes two of us.
Yep, there you go.
So good to see Jimmy back at home.
He's going to talk about Trump's speech to the Navy
in Portland. They do a bit where that was filmed last week in Queens, where they sent some
of the staff to a park in Jamaica, Queens to ask them questions about rededicating a park
to Trump and tricking them with some questions and answers. So that's a good bit, a man on
the street thing that we got from Kimmel. The guests on Kimmel, I thought were really
fascinating last night. So we had both Seth Rogan and Aziz Ansari. So they're both promoting
their new film, Good Fortune, but they are interviewed separately, which was, you know, something
that I guess, you know, you saw last week with, like, some of the movies that were being
promoted, we had guests together.
I thought that this was a really interesting way to go about it on Kimmel.
So Seth's going to come on first and talk about the awards he's won in his life, being banned
from speaking at the Emmys after critiquing the COVID restrictions in 2020.
And then Aziz is going to come on.
And this is Aziz's first late night interview since about 2017.
I know that there's been a lot of things that have gone on with Aziz and, you know,
what people have said about him.
so naturally we haven't seen him
but it was interesting to get him
back on here seemed to be in good spirits
and he is going to talk about performing at the
Riyadh festival which is
you know we weren't sure
if the people who went there
would come back and talk about it
but he does and he does
say that he actually thinks that this
was a benefit because it thinks
it's going to make things more positive and better
over there and that you know the way he
looks will and the things he talked about
will inspire people so
I certainly hope he's right, and it was good to hear from Aziz about going over there.
And then Nathaniel Raitliff is going to perform with the night sweats,
performs get used to the night, and it is a really, really good performance on Kimmel.
Over at the Daily Show, it is Monday.
So John Stewart is hosting the Daily Show.
He has a great rant about day six of the government shutdown and how upset people are
about the monuments being closed and some of the criticism that people are,
are just enraged over.
He goes on a great rant about Democrats' response to the shutdown and Chuck Schumers,
I guess press conferences that he's doing and how some of the things don't really line up.
And I thought it was a great thing for, you know,
sort of attacking both sides and criticizing the right for the way that they were
to the shutdown and then the left for being so enraged about some things that maybe
they shouldn't be as enraged about and others that they should be more enraged about.
And I think Stewart, as always, was really, really good in pointing out
the little intricacies of the things that matter.
And I would definitely recommend you go back and check out what Stewart had to say this week about the shutdown.
His guest on The Daily Show is the co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology, Tristan Harris,
who talks about the effects of artificial intelligence on human growth and how, you know,
us relying on AI could actually stunt our growth.
And I think that was a really interesting conversation if that is something that you are interested in.
So overall, a good night to start the week on late night, but clearly the story,
night last night was Taylor Swift on Fallon, the first takeover of the week.
And I think that she had an amazing time over there.
And I loved how raw she was with explaining about all of her songs, what it went into
putting the album together.
So if you are a Swiftie, it was definitely something.
You have to go back and check out.
So we will be back tonight, our tomorrows, we talk about what happens on late
night tonight, some fascinating lineups that we have.
We got Jennifer Lopez over at the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.
And then we got Huntrix on there as well, who you may have seen on Saturday Night Live for a K-pop Demon Hunter sketch.
They're going to be on Fallon tonight.
So that's another interesting booking there for Fallon, who continues to crush it with all of the most popular guests right now.
We have Jeff Bridges and Patricia Arquette on Kimmel over at Seth, Channing Tatum and Megan Maroney are visiting.
And then at the Daily Show, Josh Johnson is hosting for the first of three nights starting tonight.
So I hope you enjoy our discussion here about late night last.
