Starting point is 00:00:00 From late-nighter.com, it's Lightnight Last Night with John Schneider. And now here's John. Hello, everybody, and welcome to Late Night Last Night, here to talk about what happened on Late Night TV last night on September 29, 2025. So let's dive right into it. We got five shows on the air last night, and we're going to start with what happened on the late show with Stephen Colbert, where he had a big time guest. Before we get there, his monologue last night had a lot of content from the things that
Starting point is 00:00:42 happened over the weekend. He's going to talk about War again, where Saturday morning Trump directed Pete Heggseth to provide troops to protect Portland, and that was a big story across late night, all about Portland. Then we had some stuff on the medbeds, this AI video that Trump put out over the weekend, about these medical beds that can heal you. So a lot of very interesting storylines for late-night TV to cover this weekend.
Starting point is 00:01:06 He's going to talk about Comey, who we talked about last week a little bit. Trump, you know, having a new lawyer who's going to go after Comey, and he has a great line in his monologue here. So this is from Colbert. If Trump can indict a former FBI director, anyone who has ever stood up to Trump
Starting point is 00:01:23 has to worry about being thrown in jail. And I will fight that with every fiber of my beast. or my name is not Jimmy Fallon. F-A-L-L-O-N. Yeah, Colbert throwing Fallon right under the bus there. Love that line from the monologue. He's going to bring out Conan O'Brien. Of course, it is so fantastic to have Conan back on Colbert
Starting point is 00:01:47 and seeing them interact with each other the last time Conan was on Colbert was in 2020. So they're going to talk a lot about Conan's new film. If I had legs, I'd kick you, which is out on October. over 10th. And of course, you know, the topic of late-night TV is going to come up right away. So here is, we have a rather long clip. I'll go through it. But this is Conan speaking to Colbert at the start of the interview. Thank you. Stephen, how's late night? What's going on? I've been out of it for a little bit. Yeah, it hasn't been around for a while, so wants to know
Starting point is 00:02:17 what's happening in late night TV. Great little interaction there. Catch me up on what's happening. Okay? I'll send you the obituary. Now, you've been out for... Four years. Four years. Four years. So what do you know? I remember just as I was leaving my late night show, I took you and all the other late night hosts out. Do you remember this? Yes. All right. So big story here. Conan's going to take all the late night host out for dinner. You to a wonderful sizzler restaurant. And we all at our trays. And I told you guys, remember what I told you? I said, take care of late night. If you take care of late night, late night will take care of you. Yeah, do you think any of the late-night hosts
Starting point is 00:02:58 Listen to Conan, let's find out You did say that, yeah I said, don't do anything to ruffle any feathers Remember? I said that. Yes, you shook your shalily I had a shalala. I'm sure everyone listened to him. It's actually a piece of steak I was shaking at you.
Starting point is 00:03:15 It was the shank of the bone. Yes, exactly. And I said, I said, and whatever you do, don't speak truth to power. Yes. I said, cowardice is the way. way. It is. It is, right? In 28 years of my show, I never read
Starting point is 00:03:31 the news. I had a masturbating bear and a plastic dog. I didn't even know who was president. I had to play that whole thing, just because it was so good, the interaction between Conan. I mean, everyone was excited and anticipating when they saw that Conan was announced to be on Colbert
Starting point is 00:03:47 what he was going to say about Colbert and Camel. So nothing too serious there. Didn't address it necessarily directly, but I thought that was pretty good he's got you know he's going to say to stephen he's going to say you're going to do amazing things and have a lot of fun once he's out of late night obviously having experience for a few years uh doing uh doing many projects now that he's been out of late night so uh they're going to have this great bit where they introduce if i had legs i'd kick you the clips that
Starting point is 00:04:14 they typically promote on late night and conan's going to say for 28 years he had guests on a show and he always threw to movie clips and he would like the opportunity to throw to his own movie clip. So this is more of a visual thing. So I do encourage you to go to the Colbert YouTube channel and rewatch this video. But there's a great bit about him and Colbert switching seats, which is something that, you know, has been done on many late night shows, but I love like the energy that we get from Conan as he runs around the desk and then goes to introduce the clip and then is going to respond to his own clip. It's really great. They're going to do the same thing later with showing a bit of Conan O'Brien Must Go. And that, I think,
Starting point is 00:04:49 is on the extended version of the interview on the YouTube channel and they're going to switch again, so much energy. This is an amazing interview with Conan on Colbert, definitely the interview of the night. There's also a pretty good line where he's talking about how he got into this movie and how Sandler was the one who recommended him to do this movie.
Starting point is 00:05:09 And Sandler gets everybody jobs. He gets everybody jobs, and he called him. Can you put in a word for me because I'm free in June? Yeah, yeah, he is free in June. So there you go. good stuff from Colbert and Conan. We also have the cast of Ragtime performing on Colbert last night. They're going to perform Wheels of a Dream, the Broadway production.
Starting point is 00:05:32 So a good music on Cold Bear. Let's head over to Jimmy Kimmel, who's in Brooklyn this week. He's doing five nights of shows Monday through Friday this week. So a huge week for Kimmel after coming off of all of the attention that he got when returning to his show last week. He's at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He's coming out and he's going to talk to a raucous crowd. And he says,
Starting point is 00:05:53 We are broadcasting to 100% of the country tonight. Yeah, after all of the affiliates have brought his show back on their air. He is now fully back on the air. So he's excited to be there. He's going to talk about how New Yorkers really stood up for him, and he am coming from that area, and he says this. I'm from Brooklyn. I'm from Mill Basin, and no one tells somebody from Brooklyn to shut up.
Starting point is 00:06:18 And if they do, we are going to listen. Yeah, so no one tells somebody from Brooklyn to shut up. Guillermo is going to come out dressed in I Love New York Year. So a very New York, Brooklyn heavy show, as you would expect. Kimmel's been to Brooklyn a bunch of times over the tenure. And then he's going to talk about Eric Adams stepping down. The Mets blowing it, Roy McRoy at the Ryder Cup, Trump wanting to release Amelia Earhart piles. Vance talking about why Kimmel went off the air.
Starting point is 00:06:41 They're going to play some clips of that. And J.D. Nancy is going to say, well, he's not really off the air. He's actually on the air. And the reason maybe he went off the air was because it was rating. So, of course, Kimmel's going to have fun with that. Flay or Flave, a public enemy is going to come out. at the end of the monologue when Kimmel asks what time it is. So it is a great start to the Brooklyn shows.
Starting point is 00:06:58 Ryan Reynolds is the main guest who's there to talk about the new John Candy documentary that he produced. They talk a lot about the documentary and having Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray make some commentary on John Candy. They talk about Brooklyn a lot and how Matt Damon owns a lot of Brooklyn. And then there's a great line here from Ryan Reynolds. I wonder if Matt is behind some of this mischagosh with the network. that seems it reeks of Matt tell me I invite I don't know
Starting point is 00:07:27 well he hasn't been supportive that's for sure yeah shame on you Matt Damon we're not being supportive love that from Ryan Reynolds Josh Johnson is the next guest on Jimmy Kimmel of course Josh Johnson one of the newest Daily Show hosts and he talks about moving to New York 10 years ago
Starting point is 00:07:45 and how important this milestone is for him and that he's actually going to get to host the Daily Show next week on the 10-year anniversary of him moving to New York. He discusses what it's like living in Brooklyn. It's a really wonderful interview. If you just want to get to know, Josh Johnson, talks about his YouTube community that he's built
Starting point is 00:08:00 and all the stand-up comedy that he does over there. So great interview there from Josh. Public enemy is then going to perform. At the start of their performance, they do a little bit about, hey, Jim and Kimmel, we always got your back before they transition into their performance. At the Daily Show, it is Monday. So we got John Stewart hosting the Daily Show.
Starting point is 00:08:18 He's going to talk a lot about Trump deploying troops to Portland. He has a really good line about how he, you know, he acts impulsively the same way you or I might make a late-night Shamwow purchase. And he keeps saying, I saw it on TV. I saw it on TV. But he talks a lot about the left and the right blaming each other for the Charlie Kirk Shooter and how the TV networks continue to report on political discourse and internet culture. But I'd say probably like a little bit more of a serious rant there from John Stewart that we saw last night, but still always great stuff from him.
Starting point is 00:08:46 Jill Lepore is his guest on Daily Show. he she is going to uh she's a Harvard law professor and writer at the new yorker she wrote a book we the people a history of a u.s. constitution and there's a really nice interview from john stewart with jill talking about the series of meetings to put together the constitution and you know stewart is talking about what it's like to read a book like that and how dense it is but it is a good interview especially given everything that's been going on right now over at phallon last night, he had a big name guest on in Mariah Carey. It's not Christmas, but she's there to promote a new album. So he's going to come out for his monologue, talk about the impending government shutdown,
Starting point is 00:09:25 which, you know, I'm a little bit surprised. It was really, really Fallon who talked about that a lot. I'm sure that's going to be a big subject on late night tonight, given the impending shutdown, which would be, I believe, at midnight this evening, if they don't get a deal together. So he says the Americans were like, maybe we could all just use a break from the government. For now, He's going to talk about Bad Bunny hosting the Super Bowl halftime show. Then he's going to discuss his show on brand, which is going to be a huge topic of conversation tonight on the show. He announces a new competition for people to design a billboard on Canva for On Brand. And then he does a bit that he does every few weeks or maybe every couple months where people send in pictures that look like Fallon.
Starting point is 00:10:02 And then the wardrobe crew comes out and dresses him as his lookalikes. It's always very funny. He's going to play a game famous face off where he's going to bring out Mariah Carey and Bozma, St. John. his two main guests for the evening. It's essentially like catchphrase, but they have standees of faces that they hold up to them and they're trying to guess celebrities. I believe they haven't done this game on the show
Starting point is 00:10:22 in its capacity that we see it last night or that we saw it last night since 2016 when he last did it with like Andy Cohen. So it's been a while. He's been bringing out some games that we haven't seen in a long time on Fallon in the last few weeks. There's a really funny moment where at the end, he always does this thing where he says like when it's the last round, 10,000 points.
Starting point is 00:10:41 That's what it's worth. and then someone in the audience yells cheating so uh love that there maria carrie's going to come out it's her fourth appearance on the tonight show the first since 2020 she has a new album uh it's called here for it all she has a good story about how she walks into her son's twitch stream and they show some video of that um she has some new merch out now that's uh promoting the fact that when she was asked if she would ever go to space like katy perry she said i think i've done enough and that sure has been a shirt is very popular right now they go through a secret album of hers that she recorded in 95 called someone's ugly daughter by the man chick that a lot of people didn't know was maria carry
Starting point is 00:11:22 and jimmy's going to tell the story about how quest love showed him the album and he couldn't figure out who it was and they talk about that they're going to play a quick game of are they here for it to talk about some of the trends and then later on she's going to perform play this song with anderson pack and the roots backing them up so it's really a maria heavy show bozum of st john from the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and a huge media mogul and business mogul was on the show last night. She is the co-host of On Brand with Fallon. So they talk a lot about the show. They talk about her recent engagement. And, you know, obviously with On Brand premiering this week, it makes sense to have Bozma on the show. Over at late night, Seth has a couple of pretty big guests as well.
Starting point is 00:11:59 So he's going to do a closer look on the AI Medbeds that we talked about, Portland as well. And then Lionel Richie's going to come on to talk about writing his memoir truly. It's his first time on late night. So nice to see Lionel out there with Seth, talks about writing We Are the World for SNL fans. We got Sarah Sherman and typically we get one SNL cast member prior to the new season. So this time Sarah is going to be on Seth's show. It's her third time on late night. She talks about returning to SNL for her fifth season, opening for Sandler on tour, being at the 50th and going up to Paul McCartney and saying that she has the same haircut from wings. A really heavy interview, not in terms of content, but just like they got through
Starting point is 00:12:38 a lot in a few minutes. It talks about Noseferatu, a piece that she did at the update desk last year, and some failed sketch pitches for Timothy Shalameh and Paul Rudd, which were really funny. If you're a big SNL fan, go back, watch the interview. It was great to see those sketch pitches. We get some drawings that Sarah did for a costume that she wanted to wear in a Shalame sketch. Her new HBO special is coming out in December that was announced yesterday,
Starting point is 00:13:01 so that was the reason also why she was there. During a closer look, I will also say there was a good amount of jokes about the Mets and the Jets, and I thought that there was a really funny bit where Seth is going to talk about what his crew at the show really cares about. So listen to this one. The last few weeks here have been so weird because they keep saying, can you believe the shit? And then I say, you mean how the free speech of late night host is under attack? And then they say, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that. Good stuff there from Seth. So overall, a really fun night.
Starting point is 00:13:38 of late night, Kimmel and Brooklyn, obviously, like, a really great show to see him switch things up, head over to the East Coast, get some big guests there. You know, Fallon had a great time with Mariah Carey, so that's a huge name there coming out in September. Late night, Lionel Richie, Sarah Sherman, good stuff all over the late night sphere last night. But really, the moment of the night was on Colbert, where you have Conan there, there to talk about things that are happening in late nights, just hilarious, the banter between the two of them and, you know, eventually Colbert, you know, headed towards being off the air and Conan
Starting point is 00:14:11 giving him some advice as well. So I think that was the major story in late night on Monday, September 29th. Looking ahead to what we have here on September 30th, we have more big things happening with Stephen Colbert heading to Kimmel's show tonight. Then we got Kimmel on Colbert. So a little bit of a late night swap that's happening here. That will obviously be the story that we'll be talking about tomorrow when we're back for late night last night. So I definitely want to know what you thought about late night last night. I want to know what you think of our show that we're doing here into our second week. So leave us some comments on the YouTube channel and to never miss when I go live for late night last night around lunchtime. Subscribe to the late nighter
Starting point is 00:14:49 YouTube channel and the late nighter podcast network feed where we will have all of our content from late nighter, including our recent episode of Inside Late Night with Mark Malkoff, where he spoke to Joe Firestone.
