From late-nighter.com, it's late night last night with John Schneider.
And now here's John.
Hello, everybody, and welcome to Late Night Last Night, here today to talk about the final night of late night for September 2025, and that would be Tuesday, September 30th, and it was a big night in late night.
TV. So let's dive right into it where all of the shows were on the air. But the big story of
the night was Colbert on Kimmel and Kimmel on Colbert. So we will head over to Jimmy Kimmel's
show first, where he is there for his second night in Brooklyn. And his main guest is Stephen
Colbert. So here is how Kimmel opened up his show last night. My fellow late night host,
Stephen Colbert is here with us. It's the show the FCC does.
want you to see.
Big setup for the night that we have in store for you.
And of course, he's going to explain the thought behind the two late night
house going on each other's shows, which is pretty rare and unprecedented in late night.
Stephen is a guest on our show.
I will simultaneously be a guest on his show.
We thought it might be a fun way to drive the president nuts.
I'm sure it did.
And his whole monologue is going to be pretty good.
great where Kimmel's going to talk about the impending government shutdown. And then eventually
we are going to have an appearance from somebody playing Governor Gavin Newsom. And it is Josh
Myers, who you may know as Seth Myers's brother. Of course, you know, very famously was on Matt
TV, did podcast together. And then Josh Myers is one of the most frequent guests on Seth's show
typically playing Governor Gavin Newsom over the last few years. I think he's been on 27 times
by my account on Seth's show.
So it's his first appearance on Kimmel.
So he's going to come out riding a bike,
doing his typical Newsome thing,
and he's going to have some fun with the late-night host and Kimmel.
So I love this whole bit here from Josh.
And the roots grew.
They're a rap band.
Yes, I know that.
Okay, okay, because you did look.
Yeah, he's talking about all of the,
what people in Brooklyn like to go to,
the differences between Brooklyn and L.A.
It's okay.
Anyway, these Brooklynistas came to see you instead of
checking out the political commentary of John Oliver or Jay Stu
or pay their respects to Colbert before he shipped off to Guantanamo Gay.
Oh.
Or they could have gone and watched whatever bullshit that little creep Seth Myers is doing.
Yeah, you have to take a shot at the brother.
No, no, I don't.
Yeah, that was great.
And then we were all wondering, well, okay, well, would Seth show up?
So Seth's show typically records Monday's Tuesday show,
on Monday. So they'll do like Monday Tuesday back to back, so he's not actually recording last night.
So as it possible that Seth is going to appear on Kimmel, and he does.
He walks out, sees his brother and Kimmel there.
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
You know, I'm in town all week if you want to get dinner or something.
Oh, yeah. Hey, Jimmy. What happened with your show? I thought the whole thing was, you know.
We're back on the air. We're back on now. Yeah.
Yeah, great bit there from Seth.
with Kimmel. There's an amazing photo that has been posted of Colbert, Seth, and Kimmel,
saying hi to the president. So it is nice to see them all reunite on Kimmel's show. Colbert
will come out and be the first guest. He's going to talk a lot about what happened over the last
couple of months. And then, you know, over two weeks ago, being at the Emmys and everything
of that happened there, talking about how Colbert got nominated for an Emmy the day before
he got canceled. And Colbert telling the story of talking to Baby Doll Dixon,
about the Colbert cancellation,
and there's a pretty good line here from Colbert
passing the ball over to Kimmel.
It's their ball, and they can take it home if they want.
I mean what I've said is I'm very grateful for the 10 years of that.
They don't have any balls, Stephen. Let's be honest.
Yeah, I think that line will resonate for sure with a lot of people
watching the shows last night.
I think one of the biggest moments of the night was Colbert showing a clip
of him finding out the news that Kimmel was being taken off.
the air. So he was in the middle of filming
an episode with his audience, and
of course the cameras are rolling, so he has
footage of him finding out
on air. They weren't live, they report earlier,
but he was just
enthralled with this text and his phone and what
it was happening, so I'll play you
a part of that. It's definitely a great visual clip to
go back and watch on YouTube, but here we go.
Okay,
Jimmy Kimmel's show
has been pulled
indefinitely by ABC.
Wow.
wow so he's there he's like has his feet up on the desk he's trying to figure out what's going
on it is a really fascinating moment that we get to see from colbert wait hold on one second i'll be right
back i want to find out what this is about i'm right back yeah so he leaves and eventually he'll
tell the story about um you know just finding out the whole information and getting in touch with him
um and you know how that they reacted and how the other late night hosts reacted there's this text
chain between the late night house apparently it's pretty close to phallon's birthday and they're
like jimmy not not the time it's really selfish that you have a birthday right now so they're having
some fun with each other but it was great to get these behind the scene stories and we're going to get
the first of two moments of the night where jimmy and stephen are going to wave to each other
from the shows so they do the clips of the shows you get to see them waving to each other and they
show the clip from each other's show which is a really nice moment the next guest is kumel nangiani
he's going to come out for his new hulu stand-up special night thoughts and then you know they're
say please reactivate your Hulu for this, of course, with a lot of people canceling it when
Kimmel's show was dark.
And then, you know, when they said, oh, I'm sorry, you got less class than Stephen.
Kumel says, like, I thought my career, you know, if my career was going to be over, maybe
people would be clapping for me.
And then he has a great line where he says, like, you know, what you and Stephen have, is it
contagious?
I just want to be careful.
Like, there's all these hesitancies about Kumil appearing on the same show as Kimmel and
Colbert.
And his special is called Night Thoughts.
So he talks about a night thought that he has.
about appearing on the show, which was great.
If I do a show with Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert,
will I get deported?
Yeah, and then he says his name is Hassan Manchini.
It is a good interview from Kumal.
Then Renee Rapp is going to perform music.
She will perform, I think I like you better
when you're gone from Fight Me.
Then we have Colbert show where Kimmel's going to appear there.
Colbert is going to talk about the government shutdown
and Hegset and Trump speaking to.
in the military, which was a huge theme across late night last night,
just everybody talking about,
except in Trump's speech to the military,
Kimmel will appear.
It's actually Kimmel's first appearance on Colbert since October 2015.
So it's been a while 10 years since Kimmel has been on Colbert show,
but for good reason, you know,
we're going to talk about having so honored to be there
with my fellow non-talent.
Then, you know, Kimmel's going to tell the whole story from his side
about what happened when he was taken off the air.
Helicopters following him home, him being there,
and having to send, you know, they're about to film an episode.
So being sent home with the audience and then the guests that were there.
And there was a chef making polenta and musical performance that was filmed.
And he says like how he felt when he found out about all this.
But like what's the first thing that occurred to you?
I thought that's it.
It's over.
It is over.
I was like, this is, I'm never coming back on the end.
That's really what I thought.
And just really like interesting turn in the interview with some emotion there from Kimmel.
I just thought he was never going to be coming back.
on the air. Obviously, that was not to be the case. And he is back. He talks about going home and
being with his family for a few days where he couldn't say anything. His daughter offering to
sell her luboos. It was a very cute moment. And then we're going to keep going and, you know,
Kimmel's going to ask Bull Bear like, well, you only have like several months left on the show.
Are you going to, you're going to go a little crazy? I'm wondering when you are going to, I mean,
you have what, is seven, eight months? Eight months. Eight months left. Yeah. When are you going to
like, go nuts. When are you going to
one of those glasses
going to come off? When are you going to
shake your hair out?
Yeah, Colbert unbuttons his jacket a little bit.
He's getting ready to go nuts. It's
a good moment there with
Kimmel and Colbert. I thought
both these interviews were fantastic.
And then we get an awesome moment where Guillermo
is going to show up
with, like next to Kimmel
and Colbert. And they're going to do a shot
together. And here we go
with Stephen, cheersing with
to good friends, great jobs, and late-night TV.
Great moment for the three of them.
I think that was the shot of the night,
having the three of them taking a shot together.
Sam Smith will also be there,
talks about moving to New York and performing on a 24-show Brooklyn residency
to be free in New York City and being in love.
It's the first appearance for Sam on Colbert since 2020.
So really the story of the night, clearly Kimmel and Colbert on each other's shows and how much people were talking about what we saw with them explaining what happened over the last couple of months with both of their respective shows.
Over at Fallon, he's going to do his monologue, talk about the government shutdown and a lot of the military talk as well.
Typically with Fallon, it's the last day of the month.
So we're going to get a September recap and he's going to take out the guitar and sing and he's going to at one point say Trump has been on the attack, Kimmel banned, but now he's back.
So a good reference there to Jimmy.
Dwayne Johnson is the main guest on The Tonight Show.
This is his 19th time on the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.
That's tied for fourth all time among all of the guests that have been there.
So he hasn't been there since 2024.
But happy to have Dwayne back on the show.
They're going to talk about their new film, Dwayne's new film, The Smashing Machine,
and talks about the transformation he went through for the movie with his body
to become Mark Kerr, the MMA fighter, and working for Benny Safi.
And Mark Kerr is going to come out basically at one point to smash Jimmy Fallon with feather pillows along with Dwayne, which is a reference to the last time that Dwayne was on and Jimmy smashed Dwayne with pillows.
So it was a good moment and following up with that with Dwayne Johnson.
Then we got Henry Winkler on the show.
This is his sixth time on Fallon.
His last was 2022.
He's going to talk about his 80th birthday coming up.
So happy birthday to Henry Winkler.
And Jimmy's going to give him a bunt cake mold.
He has a new children's book, The Detective Duck.
And then Phineas and Ash, who have formed the new band, The Favors, will come out and talk about making some new music and starting to work together and how they put together their album over the last few years.
And then they will perform as well.
Over at Seth, we have Kate McKinnon, who you recently saw on Fallon last week talking about her book.
She's going to be there.
She's appearing for the 10th time on Seth.
Talks about living in the woods and her new book and how similar to S&L, you know, writing the book was where she had all these good ideas for the first book, but then use them all and ran out of good ideas.
So if you're an S&L fan, great to see Kate and Seth reunite over there.
Writer Mike Scallons is going to do the Schaulleywood Minute to talk about horror movies.
So that's the bed of the night with Noah Closer Look on Tuesday.
Charlie Hunnam will be appearing for the first time on Seth.
He'd been on Fallon once in 2020, but really not too exposed to late night shows.
He's in Monster, the Ed Ging story.
Talks about presenting at the Emmys and telling some stories about being there
and some of the celebrities that he interacted with.
He bumped into Parker Posey.
thought that she was Julia Louis Dreyfus, so there's a funny story there.
In between the Charlie interview and the next interview with Chelsea Fry, we're going
to get this really unique bit from Seth, where he's going to introduce the new late-night
2025 fall interns and how they mock him sort of reminded me a little bit of, I think it's
a John Malkovich piece from Esenelle of You Mock Me.
And yeah, going back to like the 80s.
But, yeah, there was a good bit there.
And a really dramatic moment from Seth, if you go watch that one.
And then Chelsea Fry's interview, I thought was fantastic.
She's on the paper right now.
And she comes out talking about how she used to intern at the show.
Used to be an intern on this show.
Oh, I was.
You were an intern.
We have your old.
This is Chelsea's intern headshot.
Scary.
2014 intern, and now we're returning hero.
Yeah, she interned under Fred R.
in and talked about how great it was to go do stuff for Fred because Fred is the nicest guy
ever and won't ask for anything. So he was like, okay, well, can you just a little bit of coffee?
And there was some amazing stories there, happy for Chelsea, returning now to be a guest
on the show. Over at the Daily Show last night, Ronnie Chang is hosting for the rest of the week.
So he's going to talk about the Hegseth military speech, basically that that's most of the rundown
there talking about everything that Hegseth was saying and the sort of hypocrisy of some of the things
that Trump was saying at the military speech.
Christella Alonzo, a stand-up comedian,
will talk about her new upper-classy Netflix special.
And I thought there was a really good interview
where she was talking about what it meant to be coming to the country
and her family and how meaningful it is to be in late-night television
and being on the daily show.
And then how she was on Letterman during his last month on the air
and how meaningful that was to her.
and I thought that was a good late-night moment there.
And then Ricky Veles will come on and do it, in my opinion, about sports gambling.
So overall, a pretty fun night last night in late night.
But clearly everyone will be continuing to talk about Colbert's interview on Kimmel
and Kimmel's interview on Colbert.
I think it's a night we're going to remember similar to the way that, you know,
Fallon and Kimmel swapped on April Fool's Day or Will Ferrell went on all the late night shows.
You know, sometimes when late night, you know, there's hundreds of shows every single year,
but sometimes when late night does something unique and different,
it creates memories for people who love the late night television sphere.
And I thought last night was a fantastic night to be a fan of late night TV.
So very excited for what we're going to get tonight.
As Kimmel continues with his shows in Brooklyn, he has Emily Blunt coming on the show tonight.
Jimmy Fallon is having a co-host on the show tonight.
So that's something to watch for Doja Cat musical guests this weekend on Saturday Night
will be co-hosting Fallon tonight on October 1st.
Stephen Colberas, Julia Roberts, and then Sam Smith, who was on last night,
we'll be performing some music.
Renee Rapp, who was just on Kimmel, will be a guest on Seth tonight.
So that will be very interesting.
And we just talked about Benny Safdi, who worked with Dwayne Johnson on that new film,
will be on the Daily Show tonight.
So there's a lot of great guests happening tonight, October 1st.
I hope you enjoyed today's late night last night.
