Starting point is 00:00:00 From lightnider.com, it's late night last night with John Schneider. And now, here's John. Hello, everybody, and welcome to Late Night Last Night here today to talk about everything we saw on Late Night TV last night, September 24th, 2025. My name is John Schneider. very excited to be back with you for our third day talking through everything that's happening in the late night TV world right now. And there's a lot going on. So let's get right into it. We are going to start our conversation today, of course, with Kimmel, who is back for his second night after the suspension. And you know that he has a lot more to say. So, you know,
Starting point is 00:00:48 he's going to walk out, get a lot of cheers. We hear Jimmy, Jimmy, as he's walking out. And he has a great line in response to the crowd. I always wanted to know what it felt like to be Jerry Springer, so thank you very much. Great stuff there from Jimmy Kimmel, who kicks off this show, talking about, you know, all the texts that he got from people who watched the show last night. I mean, just it was incredible. We talked about it a lot on yesterday's late night last night, but all of the lines that he said in the monologue was just really well written. There's so many publications that have wrote amazing things, including on Late Diner, about Kimmel's monologue from the night before. So if you haven't gone to see it, if you're one of the millions of people who haven't gone to see the monologue of Jimmy returning to the show, definitely go check that out.
Starting point is 00:01:36 So he's going to talk today about what Trump said about his return. When he came back the night before, he hadn't gotten any material together because Trump hadn't had the time to respond to Kimmel getting back on the air. So tonight's monologue from Kimmel was a lot of him responding to what Trump wrote on truth social. about him. And, uh, he starts by talking about this. You can't believe they gave me my job back. I can't believe we gave you your job back. Yeah, Trump wrote a lot about just how, you know, he was told that the show was canceled. He can't believe that Kimmel got his job back. So Kimmel does respond and does this back and forth, uh, with Trump. And he's, as he's reading out the different, uh, posts on truth social. Then there's a moment in Kimmel's monologue, which I have,
Starting point is 00:02:28 haven't seen it reported too much, but I thought that this was a fascinating moment here. So he's reading out this like stuff about how, you know, Kimma, Trump wrote that like let Jimmy Kimmel rot in his bad ratings. And then as he's doing this, an audience member during the monologue is actually going to yell out and interrupt Kimmel's monologue. And then Jimmy will say the following. So let me play that clip for you. I thought it was a really fascinating moment last night from Kimmel's Monologue. Something happened between then and now because his audience is gone and his talent was never there. That I can't argue with.
Starting point is 00:03:00 Shut the fuck up. The freedom of speech is only for me. It's so good. I mean, it's just interesting, right? Because, like, you would think that most of the time that that would happen, they wouldn't keep that in the show. But they did. I mean, Kimmel just had a killer line at the end of it saying, you know, shut the F up.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Like, that's freedom of speech is only for me. But, yeah, really, like, fascinating moment there from an audience member. who I believe was supporting Kimmel. I don't think he was there to antagonize Kimmel, but I'll just play the beginning of the clip one more time so we could hear that. Something happened between then and now because his audience is gone and his talent was never there.
Starting point is 00:03:38 That I can't argue. Yeah, so he says, like, I guess he's reading out the post from Trump talking about his audience and how the ratings are poor for Kimmel, and then the person in the audience says, we're right here, Jimmy. So he's there doing a message of support. But Kimmel has an amazing response again
Starting point is 00:03:54 and I'll play it one more time. Shut the f*** up. The freedom of speech is only for me. So good. Okay, so that he's going to continue on. He's going to talk about his staff. And, of course, it was so great to get Camel back on the air for the hundreds of staff that work for him to have their opportunities to return to their jobs.
Starting point is 00:04:16 And he's going to read out texts from the staff's family that they were texting last week. So, like, a lot of obviously concerned parents and siblings about, like, oh, are you going to lose your job? What show are you going to work for? And he reads this one from one of his staff's mothers. She said, hey, sweetie, is it Kimmel or Fallon that you currently work for? And he'll go back and forth and read all of the responses and all of the texts.
Starting point is 00:04:42 And it's a really good bit that he does there. Of course, one of the big subjects across the late night sphere last night was escalator gate. This is the moment at the UN where Trump on his way to making his speech tries to go up an escalator with the first lady. and then the escalator stops. So there's going to be a lot of jokes about that. He's going to thank Andy Cohen, who he says he forgot to mention the night before with all of the late-night host that he was thanking,
Starting point is 00:05:05 and also Kelly Rippa and Mark Consuelos for sending his staff an ice cream truck. And he'll also thank the 400 entertainers who signed a letter to the ACLU. He'll take out a copy of that letter. And then his first guest of the night, Ethan Hawke, is going to come out and interrupt the monologue and say it was a great privilege to sign the letter,
Starting point is 00:05:22 and he's doing this bit that, Unfortunately, he didn't sign the letter because he doesn't want to bet on a three-legged horse and he wasn't sure if Kimmel was going to be coming back or not. Of course, Ethan is promoting his new series, The Lowdown, and he's going to have a really good interview with Kimmel. Ethan talks about how he's living in Brooklyn and Kimmel is going to Brooklyn next week for all of his show. So, like, it was a weird logistical thing of like, why did he need to fly out to L.A.?
Starting point is 00:05:45 He could have seen him while he was in Brooklyn. But here he has a pretty good line and good back and forth with Kimmel. I don't know what that was about. Yeah, you were a victim of the preemption. Well, I'm glad he made it out here. Well, I'm glad to have you back in the United States of America. Were you told that I left? Well, I was told you were sent to a Russian gulag, but luckily, you're back.
Starting point is 00:06:08 Thank you. I appreciate that. It's hard to tell the difference now between the gulags and the United States. But last night was amazing, and we're all really proud of you. Oh, that's nice. So, of course, a really good moment there, which is, you know, making a joke about Jimmy being stuck in Russia and then, of course, you know, being just super proud of everything that he did last night.
Starting point is 00:06:31 He's going to go on and talk about auditioning for Robert Redford recently passed and how, you know, just like all of how Redford inspired him for some of his roles and how he wouldn't be doing the lowdown without him. His second guest on the night is Lisa Ann Walter, who you may know from Abbott Elementary and a ton of other stuff. Lisa and Walter cooks some food for Kimmel and brings it out. And I'm going to play this clip. It's a little bit longer, but it's a really nice moment
Starting point is 00:06:55 where she talks about what she's bringing to Kimmel's show last night. This is my plan. I want to bring to America the things that Americans love the most, which is a nice home-cooked meal and a great rack. Yeah, they have a really good conversation. Giermo's going to come out and try some food. That is delicious. What is this called?
Starting point is 00:07:23 Okay, so it's macaroni ala pezzarees. Let me hold it up. Yes, it is, okay, so it's a pasta dish that a lot of people don't know about. It is chopped turkey breast, like roast turkey, and prosciute, onions, mushrooms. You cook it in wine, and then you pour a little cream on top, layer it in a dish with butter and grie air cheese. Yeah. It's absolutely delicious. Yeah, so she'll go, he'll show off the food.
Starting point is 00:07:50 It looks really, really good, and then she's going to say, this really really well you know i figured you were out of work for a few days you might need yeah super endearing from lisa ann who i will talk about working on abidementry and you know being in philadelphia and how she's seen as the philadelphia princess uh and she gets free pizza at angelo's in philly and she's thrown out the first pitch at a philly's game uh of course season 5 avidelmentary premieres in a week uh time from i think it's last night so then uh or tonight one of those uh who will be premiering next week and then she has a new comedy special on hulu next year We're going to have some music on Kimmel as well.
Starting point is 00:08:23 Young Blood is going to perform zombie from his album, Idols. So another good night there for Kimmel. Over at Colbert, he's been talking a lot about Kimmel. Obviously, they're great friends, and we've been playing clips from Colbert discussing Kimmel's show on air. He's going to once again open up his show talking about Jimmy Kimmel. You're in a good mood. You're in a good mood.
Starting point is 00:08:43 I'm in a good mood because last night, our friend Jimmy Kimmel returned to television. And again, I don't expect anything less, but I just find it so fascinating whenever. Like, it's fine, you know, we're used to some references from one late night show to another. They're not living in a time where, like, Leno never references Letterman
Starting point is 00:09:01 or Letterman doesn't reference Leno. But, like, starting off the show with that, again, always really fascinates me. He's going to have a pretty good joke here as well. Showed his deep emotions. It's got huge ratings. It did so well that Disney just announced next summer they're releasing Guillermo and Stitch.
Starting point is 00:09:19 So think about that. I mean, all the things that are going on right now and, of course, still the number one story that Colbert is going to be talking about is Kimmel. So, yeah, he's going to go on. He's going to talk also a lot about escalator gate. Again, a big story.
Starting point is 00:09:32 He's going to bring in his escalator investigator and talk about how the escalator stopped, which turns out was probably just a videographer pressing the wrong button. He's going to make another reference to Kimmel where he's going to talk about Park Police removing a statue of Trump and Epstein holding hands and on one leg.
Starting point is 00:09:47 And he's going to say that they removed it because they were threatening to cancel Disney Plus. So a great reference there to Kimmel and everything that was going on at ABC. And he will also say that Trump supporting Ukraine, which was a little bit of a subject matter on late night last night, which was that all of a sudden Trump seems to be more on the Ukraine side of things now. And he's going to say, wow, if this change, his favorite show might now be Jimmy Kimmel Live. So that's a good bit.
Starting point is 00:10:13 He's also going to perform his segment, The Sound of Science. We saw that a couple weeks ago as well. His main guest of the night is Senator Chris Murphy, from Connecticut. It's the second time on the show the last time, August 22. He's going to come on. He's going to talk about gun violence and Trump's new position on Ukraine. They're going to look over a video that Chris had over the weekend. And let me play this video. I thought it was, this was really fascinating. Even Colbert is gone. Jimmy Kimmel is gone now. You need to see what is happening right now. It is the systematic destruction of free speech in this country.
Starting point is 00:10:45 I'm right here. Yeah. Yeah, that was a good moment because this is a video that he had put out, I guess, on social media over the weekend, and Colbert is going to reference, like, you said I was gone, but like, I'm not gone yet. And I think that may be something that was talked about online a little bit about, like, people who aren't so tapped into all of these shows, don't realize that Colbert is still on the air for at least, at least until May. So, you know, that was a good reference there from Colbert to call Senator Chris Murphy out on that. country music superstar, Lainie Wilson, will appear on the show for her first time. She talks about being at the Emmys and getting into country music. She's going to perform her song somewhere over Laredo from her new album, Whirlwind. And it's a nice interview and musical performance from Lainie Wilson.
Starting point is 00:11:29 Let's head over to Fallon, where Fallon is going to have some major guests. Again, we talked about how big the guests are, how many A-list guests Fallon has had on this week. It's a huge week at Fallon. He has Mark Wahlberg as his main guest, Kim Kardashian, number two. And then special appearances tonight from Chris Jenner and Chloe Kardashian as well. So really another huge night for Fallon with everything that's going on on all the other networks. It makes
Starting point is 00:11:51 sense. And he's going to meet with Kim Kardashian at the top of the show. And then in the monologue, he's going to talk a little bit about escalator gate. He's going to say the whole thing was a headache, which is a really good line, but even worse, he couldn't take any Tylenol talking about Trump's opinions on Tylenol over the last few days. Then he's going to show
Starting point is 00:12:07 they do this thing sometimes where they like put words in Trump's mouth or they show clips of Trump where like they manipulate them a little bit. to tell a joke. And in this case, of course, they're talking about Trump's speech at the UN, where the teleprompter was not working, and they're showing what appeared on the teleprompter as Trump was making his speech. So here's a clip from Fallon, which is, I thought had some pretty good references. I must reject the failed approaches of the past and work together to confront
Starting point is 00:12:38 some of the greatest threats in history. Interesting how to get him together. So he says you must confront the greatest threats in history. And on the visual, if you go back and watch that monologue, he's actually showing a picture of Fallon Colbert and Kimmel saying that that is what Trump was referencing at the UN, which I thought was a nice touch there from Fallon. He does a funny bit also about leopard sharks mating in the wild and having a threesome that you can only see it on only fins. And Fallon just hates the joke. and he basically goes to the Q card, takes it himself, and gives it to someone in the audience. He's like, I don't want to do this joke.
Starting point is 00:13:19 I don't want to do it. I think he's done that a couple times before, but they included that one in there. Then he's going to sit at the desk, talk about going to the Ryder Cup this weekend, promoting his new show on brand. So again, that's premiering next week, and he's going to continue to talk a lot about that. He will then do his famous segment hashtags. And this time we're doing hashtag AdWord, make a song, Fall. He did it a couple weeks ago on September 11th.
Starting point is 00:13:40 But before that, he hadn't done it since 2024. he seems to be bringing back a couple of old bits that he hadn't done for a while. He does a lot of great musical impressions, and if you don't watch Fallon every day, like, these are the types of things I love watching Fallon for because the way that he incorporates music with the roots and reading out some of these tweets or ex posts is really, really good with this hashtag. Then we get a game with Password. We get to see Password with Mark Wahlberg and Kim Kardashian.
Starting point is 00:14:07 The last game of Password that was played on The Night Show was in April, Elton John, Brownie Carlyle, and Haley Steinfield. So very funny stuff there from Walberg and Kim Kardashian, who is acting out a lot of the things that she isn't supposed to be saying in the clip. So Kim is really personable and wonderful there. Mark Wahlberg's going to come out for his interview. It is his 10th time on the show. He tells a great story about how he got a new dog for his kids, and he wanted to surprise them by saying someone special is coming over. And his kids actually thought it was Kim Kardashian.
Starting point is 00:14:38 So if his wife was like freaking out thinking that Kim Kardashian was going to come over and his house wasn't clean, They then talk about his friendship with Leonardo DiCaprio, who was on the show the night before and how he shaved his head for a recent film, Walberg. Jimmy's then going to bring out some pizza to eat with him. He's promoting his new film Play Dirty on Prime Video October 1st. Then Kim Kardashian is going to do her interview. It's her seventh time on this night show with Jimmy Fallon, starring Jimmy Fallon.
Starting point is 00:15:02 Chris Jenner and Chloe Kardashian are there to watch. So they were not promoted beforehand, but they are there and they're not actually being interviewed next to Fallon. They keep going to sort of the side of the audience, that door that sometimes you see near Steve where Chris and Chloe are miced up and are commenting on the interview as it's going. So it's an interesting thing that they have going on there. They're going to talk about Kim appearing in the Lawrence Welk sketch that we got during SNL 50, the anniversary special. And Chris and Chloe comments on if Kim ever gets nervous.
Starting point is 00:15:30 This is actually Chris Jenner's first time on the Tonight Show. So I thought it was really cool to have her there. They talk about when Kim Kardashian hosted Saturday Night Live in season 47 and how she says that she wasn't nervous because she had actually never seen Saturday. Saturday Night before she had been a host on the show. So they have what I thought was a really good conversation. Then they talk about a tattoo she got after doing SNL, which is in her mouth. They show that.
Starting point is 00:15:54 And then how Chris has tried to set Kim Kardashian up on some dates and including one specific dates where she thought it was a job interview. And then there's a great bit where Jimmy asked Chloe her opinion on setting Kim up. And then Chloe says, like, I don't know how to pick them. So don't go to me and Jimmy's going to take a sip of his coffee. So good stuff there. They're promoting the Nike Skim's new partnership between Nike and Kim's, Skim's brand. Lola Young is going to perform spiders on the tonight show starring Jimmy Fallon.
Starting point is 00:16:23 Lola, if you watched yesterday, was on Seth Myers the night before doing an interview. That was actually, I think, filmed on Monday. But still, Lola doing a double duty this week on Fallon and on Seth, this time performing one of her new songs. Let's head over to Seth Myers, a show what we saw last night. So Seth had a closer look. He's going to talk about Trump speech to the U.N. and him mixing up different countries. Then Ken Jong is going to come on the show.
Starting point is 00:16:45 This is a sixth time on set. He talks about being in K-pop Demon Hunters and getting a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame recently. He talks about Joel McHale speaking for him and what Joel means to him. So there's always this great relationship if you ever follow Ken Jong and Joel McHale going back to the community days
Starting point is 00:17:00 and then appearing on all these shows together, talking about their relationship, which is really nice. He's promoting his Fox show 99 to beat. And then Louis Partridge's first time on set. I think he's been on Kimmel before, but never on set. He talks about appearing in House of Guinness on Netflix and how he was actually drinking a Guinness when he got casted on the show. And then Seth and Louis, I know Seth did day drinking the night before,
Starting point is 00:17:24 but he's going to do some more drinking tonight where they're going to drink the Guinness together and split the G, which is that they're going to drink beer from, or they're going to drink a Guinness from the cup. And then they have to, without looking, stop when the beer goes exactly to halfway through that G to get that line as they split the G together. so Louie obviously nails that and there's a good video of that online over at the Daily Show Jordan Klepper is hosting he's doing his second of three days in a row hosting the daily show
Starting point is 00:17:51 he mostly talks about Trump's position on Ukraine changing and how he's been upset with Putin. He has this very good line over here this season of the Golden Bachelor is fucking weird obviously referencing the new premiere of the Golden Bachelor
Starting point is 00:18:06 and then he's going to play a lot of clips of Fox in Fox News Just going on this endless saga about Trump with the escalator and the conspiracy theory that about who sabotage the escalator. He's going to bring in his correspondent, Grace Koolen Schmidt, you talk about the deep state controversy on escalators. And that's basically the main crux of the Daily Show last night. The guest on the Daily Show was Sebastian Murphy of the band,
Starting point is 00:18:35 Viagher Boys talking about the band, and then they're going to perform later on the show. So overall, last night on late night, it was clearly still a lot about Jimmy Kimmel returning to the show and what he was going to follow up his amazing performance the night before with going back and forth with Trump. We do get references to, you know, the amazing numbers that Kimmel did. I think he had like his highest ratings in over 12 years. And Colbert is going to reference that as well. So really, really big night on Kimmel again for a second night in a row. Colbert is going to have some good moments as well. And then on Fallon, it was just a big pop culture night where you got Mark Wahlberg.
Starting point is 00:19:09 and you got the Kardashians on there with Kim and Chloe and Christian Netter. So a lot of fun stuff happening throughout late night last night. Of course, we got more shows coming up tonight, and we will be back tomorrow for some more late night last night to cover everything that happens on Thursday, September 25th.
