Episode Date: August 5, 2025

Danielle Panabaker (The Flash, Sky High) joins me again to share how she balances a practical approach to life alongside success, fame, and motherhood in Hollywood. Danielle opens up a lot about her t...ime on The Flash - from issues with crossovers, to gratitude for the 180+ episodes she was in, to the reality of negotiations behind the scenes. We also talk about problems child actors face, her new film Second Guessing Fate, and how navigating the industry has evolved over the years. And we've surpassed already last year. Wow. Yeah. Wow. So that's good. Also the Smallville Con, Creation Con, creation smallville in September in Chicago. Go to that. I'll be in Cincinnati with Tom. Just go to the Instagram, Toronto, the whole cast is going to be in Toronto, going to Canada. Oh, Canada. I think that's about it. And if you want to join patron and support this podcast, if you're enjoying it, you're
Starting point is 00:04:35 only helping the podcast. We couldn't do it without you. Look, let's just get into this. This is, she's just lovely. I loved having her on here. She's so smart. She's so smart. It's like keeping up with her is not always easy.
Starting point is 00:04:48 But let's get inside of the wonderful Danielle Panapena. Baker. It's my point of you. You're listening to Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum. Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum was not recorded in front of a live studio audience. You were driving up and I said nice car and then you said, yeah, I'm trading in and I go for what? Because this is a really nice car. You go, oh, I used Kia. Yes. And I was like, you're a celebrity, you're on a show, you're like, I use Kia. Yeah. Your response was pretty sweet.
Starting point is 00:05:29 What was it? I'm nothing if not practical. You are practical. Thank you. Are you practical in everything you do? Like when you buy clothes, do you ever splurge? I mean, occasionally I splurge, but like I'm more inclined to splurge on an accessory, like shoes or jewelry or something that I know is going to last a long time and like not go out of style or anything like that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:51 Do you splurge? I splurge on stupid stuff. Like what? That's stupid. Like, well, you're looking at it. The thing poster, an original poster, the evil dead poster. I mean, does it bring you joy? It does.
Starting point is 00:06:03 And you spend a lot of time in here? Yeah. I like this stuff. It's just the kid in me, the horror fan in me since I was a kid. And I like to, I don't want to bury that. I want it to be out in the open. Yeah. And like remind me of how cool this is.
Starting point is 00:06:19 It is. Because I think we need reminders. of how lucky we are. I was just going to say that. How lucky we are to get to do what we love. Yeah. Do you, are you able to take a step back and sort of be grateful and proud of yourself? And like, are you able to do that? Oh, absolutely. I think even the whole run of the flash, I think that was something that I had a little bit more perspective on perhaps in some of my co-stars was to understand how incredibly lucky we were to have this opportunity to be on a show that ran for so long and afforded us so many opportunities.
Starting point is 00:06:53 Yeah, it is. It's sometimes when you're, like, in the thick of it. Yes. That doesn't mean that, like, I didn't complain and have hard days at work. Sure. Yeah, you get caught up in it. Because contrary to popular belief, you know, my friends in Indiana, they're like, oh, you got the easy job.
Starting point is 00:07:09 You got the, I go, you know what? I'm lucky and I get paid well, but it's not easy. It's sometimes fun. Yeah. Sometimes really rewarding. Yeah. Sometimes really hard. and sometimes grueling.
Starting point is 00:07:22 Yes. And I know that for the series you shot, similar to what I shot on Smallville and you shot on The Flash and other shows, that the schedule was always changing. It's not like you wake up and you know you're going to work at 9 to 5. You're waking up at 4 sometimes to get work by 5 and then get in makeup for an hour and a half. And then it's just crew call right then. And then you film 12 hours from crew call. and a four.
Starting point is 00:07:51 Well, we were doing 14-hour days the first couple seasons. Yeah, we were, too. And that's just like- And that's a 14-hour crew day, plus a lunge break, plus, I mean, did you have to do a lot of prosthetics, or did you just shave your head? No, they had to shave my head and put three layers of, my people have heard this story a million times. Sorry.
Starting point is 00:08:07 But they had to put like three layers of makeup to hide the shadow of my, what is it called, the hairline. Yeah. The airline. So you have a sense of it. I mean, you know, on our show, some of the men wouldn't go into hair and makeup until after a crew call and versus the women. And, you know, when I was playing Killer Frost,
Starting point is 00:08:24 that hair and makeup was a lot longer than even just the table. How long? I mean, it started closer to two hours. So if it's a 7 a.m. crew call, I'm there at 5 a.m. Are you chipper in the morning? At five? No, I'm not chipper. You just don't talk much? I'm polite and I have my coffee and then I kind of wake up. Do you feel like your makeup artist or your hairstylist becomes your therapist?
Starting point is 00:08:49 a little bit but and I can say this truthfully you know in particular the hair makeup people we had probably for the last four or five seasons on flash like they were and are some of my closest friend like Andrew who did my hair on flash we met because he started to work on flash and I still will fly to Vancouver to get my hair cut and colored by him I won't let anyone else touch Are you serious? Yep you'll spend a flight a cost of a flight and pay him yes well also you have to remember Vancouver is cheaper than L.A. Not to fly there. I mean, you can get relatively for a flight?
Starting point is 00:09:25 Yeah. Listen, I fly economy. I like, again, nothing if not practical. And we, you know, we live part, we have a house in Washington. Oh. And it's not far from Vancouver and, you know, Allegiant Airlines, I can get up there. Allegiant. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:09:43 Good for you. Nothing if not practical. You know, it's good to be practical. and it's like you never know if i every job i had i always thought this could be the last one so i think a lot of save your money save your money because it's not like you continue to work from the time you start it's like a show is over and then it could be years and then it's i mean flash ended and we had the writer strike and then the actor strike so there was no work then covid well we you finished before that uh when did you finish no i mean covid hit in 2020 and we were filming that
Starting point is 00:10:17 end of season six. So we went back to film season seven in the fall in September 2020. Oh, so you're fresh off the, you know, this is, this is not that long ago. Flash was not that long ago, no. How many episodes did you do? 184. How many did you guys do of Smallville? I did I did 160 something. Okay. I left, but I think they did 200. If we'd done one more season, we probably would have hit 200. Did you get tired of it? Were you just like, we've done everything? There's nothing else to do. I feel like I'm going on set and just doing what I know I should do. Well, I played a lot of different characters on the show.
Starting point is 00:10:56 So, you know, Killer Frost started, I think, in season three. And then they kind of morphed her into Frost, who was not really a villain. And that was more of season somewhere in there. And then, you know, for a couple seasons, much. longer than was promised to me. I was playing two characters at the same time. And then by our ninth season, I was another character. Did you ever have an accent? Like a different accent? Not really. Frost had more attitude than Caitlin, who was, you know, a doctor and a scientist and all those things. But no, no accent. Who was the most playful on set? Tom Kavanaugh. Who is the funniest? By the way,
Starting point is 00:11:39 I love Tom. Tom is the sweetest, sweetest man. on the planet, such a good heart. He's got that boy in him still. And that's what I love. I love that he's like, I could joke with him and goof off. And I feel like we could be teenagers in a way. Yeah. He really does have that, like, playful essence to him.
Starting point is 00:12:00 But who makes you laugh the most? Maybe Carlos. Carlos made you laugh. Yeah. Carlos and I are incredibly close, too. I mean, we shared half of a trailer for the first six seasons, which, you know, I think the best way to sort of equate that is like roommates like you know you heard every time the other person's toilet flush like you knew too much about each other and so he and I are incredibly close
Starting point is 00:12:25 you had to share like it's called a double banger folks now you think that after season six you're one of the stars of the show you have your own trailer now why didn't that happen because it's show business you know at the end of the day the studio is spending money and it's you know how Do they feel that money is best spent? Yes, but I know that for Smallville, it was like, Tom, everyone else. And I made it very clear that, no, Lex Luthor is not just anyone else. And it was a tough battle. I'm sure.
Starting point is 00:13:02 And I fought for years. And how did that go? How was that for you? It was the worst experience of my life negotiating and dealing with that. I almost walked I almost walked there was it was a tumultuous relationship for a while but uh and do you feel like it was with you know the creatives or more the studio no not creatives i loved everybody I loved everybody in the set I never had a problem with anybody I always was joking around making everybody laugh but it got to me when it came time to negotiate it's
Starting point is 00:13:32 I always say this but it's like when you I don't care where you work if you're working for a company and the company's doing really well and you're an important part of that you should be compensated compensated and so they didn't they didn't agree with all that and uh that sounds like I said fuck you uh I just but it really I think my life was miserable for a good two years until I why do you think that um because I allowed it to it's it's my fault I allowed them to get to me yeah but I just I wasn't happy going to work for a while and Because of how I was how they felt like how they felt about me my perception of how they felt about me. And I was right. And what do you mean you were right? Well, it was warranted. It was like it wasn't like I was saying, you know, I want this. I want that. It was just like, hey, I deserve at least this. You know, this isn't like, you know, it's like it's the story of Tom because. coming Superman and me, you know, me becoming Lex.
Starting point is 00:14:45 Yeah. That's the real story of the show. And so ended up, it took a while, but I made it happen. But I could see where in the flash, it's like there's the flash and then there's a lot of great characters. So I don't know how much room you had to. When you negotiate, I bet you were a little upset. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:01 I mean, of course. Yeah. It just gets to you. It gets to anybody out there who has a job and they're working their ass off. And you know that you're doing a good job. Yeah. And then they're like, well, here's what we're giving you. It just makes you want to go to work late.
Starting point is 00:15:15 Yeah, I get it. I never went to work late, but I did. Neither did I. I did have a migraine that I couldn't. Ah, I see, I see. I understand those days. And apparently, yeah, there are stuff. But you, but you're not like that, right?
Starting point is 00:15:28 You don't, you let things go. No, but I don't know, I don't know that being a team player served me. Do you know what I mean? yeah you almost you almost felt like you allowed them to just walk all over you it can feel like that absolutely you know because i really pride myself on being punctual and prepared and knowing my lines and like doing my best and not everyone works that way and it's hard it was hard for me when i felt like bad behavior was being rewarded when people who weren't behaving the same way i was you know, we're receiving better, different, whatever, treatment.
Starting point is 00:16:13 Yeah. But, you know, at the end of the day, it's like it's my job to keep my side of the street clean. Like, I can just focus on myself and decide. And that's what, you know, you know how it is. When you sign on to a show, your contract is for six years. And so you don't really have a lot of wiggle room for those first many, many years. And then when it came time to renegotiate at various points, you know, It truly is that moment where you have to sit down and sit with yourself and say, okay, like, if I make this deal, if I accept this deal, then I have accepted it.
Starting point is 00:16:47 Like, I can't say yes and then be mad that I said yes for the next 365 days. You just have to say, yeah, absolutely. When you finally say yes, you've decided. Yes. And I did that too. I came to a point where I, but there, if I look back, because I found, out a lot of information after that I could have fought more. I could have said, no, I'm irreplaceable. Find someone else. Go for it. I could have done that and probably succeeded, but it would have been a tough, tough time for even longer. And I wanted it to end. I wanted it to be like, I just want to be done with this. Okay. This is somewhat fair. Yeah. This is somewhat fair. And let's move on. And I think also as, I mean, I'll speak for myself, but as a very sensitive person and as an actor, Like, my strength is not a negotiation.
Starting point is 00:17:40 That's why we have people like lawyers and agents to do that for us. Like, you pay them to be the asshole. Now, by the way, your husband is a lawyer. Yeah. Now, is he a lawyer? He's not. It's better that way because if he doesn't get you a good deal, he, you're upset. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:59 I mean, as you can't win. It's an upsetting process. It is. Was he hurt that you don't want to have him as a lawyer? He understood. No, I think it was. his idea. Is it is Hayes? I love Hayes. Hays. Shout out to you. I love playing tennis with him. We got to play tennis. I know. I was just playing this morning. Really? Are you good? No, I'm just learning. I want to be
Starting point is 00:18:18 good enough so that like I can rally with Hayes. He's better than I am. Yeah. But did he choose the lawyer? Like I think this person would be great for you. Same firm. No. One of his partners is my lawyer. Yes. And it was someone that I felt like I had a good relationship with. Inside of you is brought to you by Rocket Money. Starting point is 00:22:16 slash inside of you. Free shipping and 365-day returns. Quince.com slash inside of you years ago we met at marina backrins it was just her birthday by the way we met ryan at marina's dinner party and afterwards um actually marina said i think i think Danielle would be kind of cool for you and i go cool and you came and um i was like yeah she's really delightful she's beautiful and smart and funny and then I called her I go hey and she goes I talked to her and she already started dating someone which turned out to be Hayes turned out to be my husband and they got
Starting point is 00:23:04 married we did you see that eight years ago yeah I don't know if I even had a chance but timing isn't the way the world works timing it is but yeah things happen for a reason and it was just that was it And, but it was funny how she started the conversation, like, you know, Danielle. And I go, all right. Yeah. I appreciate that. I mean, I feel like it's always a tricky thing when people are setting up friends like that. Yeah. That has the potential to go. Yeah, it never works, especially when girls, girlfriends of yours try to set me up. I immediately say, don't even do it. Why? Because I think the girls that I know have a propensity for choosing women who
Starting point is 00:23:50 aren't in their eyes as pretty as my friends. So in other words, a girlfriend of mine will put me up with someone that's... So you're saying your friend is a 10 out of 10 and she's going to set you up with someone who's an 8 out of 10? Well, I'm not a 10, but my friend's probably like a 7, but like, you know, she'll go for a 6 or you know, she'll get, you know, and I'm like, or somebody that's just, I'm like, why would you, why would you, you know, unless the personality is just like overwhelming and like awesome and, but they never, it never works.
Starting point is 00:24:18 I'm sorry. It never works with friends. But you're in a relationship now. How did you guys need? I was doing a live podcast and she was there and I spotted her and I thought she was really cute and she was leaving. What brought her there? When she was younger, her family, they all watched Smallville.
Starting point is 00:24:36 So she thought it'd be fun to go to the podcast. So she just went and she wasn't even going to go, but she ended up going. Where is the live? It was at the bourbon room in Los Angeles. Wow. And she was leaving and I ran up to her and I go, hey, this is weird, but can I take you to for a cup of coffee or something? I love that you did that.
Starting point is 00:24:51 Yeah. And that was it. That's amazing. And I feel like that takes a lot of confidence. Like I feel like, I don't know, obviously it's been a long time since I was dating. But with apps and people spend so much time on their phones now, like I think about that sometimes, like what it would be like to be out in the world right now, trying to meet people. Yeah. It rarely works on a dating app, rarely.
Starting point is 00:25:14 one, the women and the men put their pictures up that are mostly just like beautiful lighting, perfect, the best they'll look. Me, I want to look. The worst. Not the worst, but like, okay. Yeah, the way you do every day. If you think, if you're clicking yes to me, then you're in for a treat. Great. Because I think I'm better looking than some of the pictures that I put up.
Starting point is 00:25:42 But if you put the best picture. you're wasting time because they're going to meet you and go, hey, I was supposed to meet this girl. That's me. I'm Holly. I know. Holy shit, really? That's, I didn't know. It's just misleading.
Starting point is 00:26:00 It's tricky, though, but I feel like that's a lot of, you know, what people put on the internet is it's, you know, you're representing the best version of yourself and not necessarily the most authentic version, if that makes sense. Yeah, just look like you. That's all. I don't. care look like you now that you have two children what has changed about you do you think you're more more patient or do you flip out more i don't know i mean i feel like patience is something i could always work on yeah me too yeah i mean it's hard especially you know there's when it's the two of them versus me the number of times i've been like guys there's two of you and one of me like i need
Starting point is 00:26:39 a little patience you got to help me out here how um how difficult is it really having kids. Like, people will say, oh, it's the best thing that's ever happened. And, you know, my friend Chris put it to me in Lamish, who's said, listen, man, no one's going to tell you this. But sometimes, sometimes your deepest, darkest thoughts come out in your head and you just got to go, man, and you somehow suck it up and do it. It can't be easy. No, it's not easy. But I mean, there's a magic to it. Like, yes. is it exhausting? Is it challenging? Is it so much harder than I ever imagined it would be? Absolutely. But it's also magical. Magical. Yeah. They're little ewes. Yes. And little hazes. But better. Like, and also their
Starting point is 00:27:30 own version of themselves, constantly revealing themselves to us. You know, I mean, you have dogs. And I know you love your dogs. Yeah. That's a, yeah. And by the way, if anything ever happened in my dogs, I would just be distraught. Yes. So imagine children. Yeah. So that's, you know, that's another thing. And it's also like, you know, your past, like your childhood. If you, you know, I always felt like, you know, I don't want to have kids because I just, I'd be too hard on myself. I just, they have to be perfect. They have, I have to, I don't want to fuck up. I don't want to be. Yeah, but I think the truth of the matter is. You're going to fuck up. Yeah. I'm going to fuck up. Yeah. And, you know, all I can do is try and set a good example for them and when I do apologize and, you know, try and make it
Starting point is 00:28:17 right. Yeah. Did you get anxiety, by the way, when the flash ended? Did you get depressed? Did you get anxious? Did you, are you insatiable? Do you have to always work? Or do you do you like the time to I did not have anxiety when the show ended? Grant had said many times over, as we said earlier, You sign a six-year contract. So, and again, as you know, you sign the six-year contract, but every year it's up to the studio whether or not they pick you up again. So, you know, I had in my head that it would probably be six years and kind of anything beyond that. We just sort of took one year at a time. And I think Grant had his struggles and frustrations and, you know, talked many times about being done and ready to move on and things like that.
Starting point is 00:29:07 So I never had an expectation that we would go nine years. And as we were saying before about, oh, you sign a contract and, you know, you say yes. So at a certain point, I was just saying yes to one year at a time. So I knew I had, okay, I have a job for one more year and then we'll see what happens. So I don't think I had anxiety when the show ended. I think, you know, the business, as I'm sure you know, as well, is in a really strange place right now. I mean, I've been doing this 20 years and I've never seen anything like it. And I'm, I really would love a crystal ball just to look and see what the future holds.

Starting point is 00:32:11 Summer's here, and you can now get almost anything you need for your sunny days, delivered with Uber Eats. What do we mean by almost? Well, you can't get a well-groom lawn delivered, but you can get a chicken parmesan delivered. A cabana? That's a no. But a banana, that's a yes. A nice tan, sorry, nope. But a box fan, happily yes. A day of sunshine? No.
Starting point is 00:32:30 A box of fine wines? Yes. Uber Eats can definitely get you that. Almost, almost anything delivered with Uber Eats. Order now. Alcohol and select markets. Product availability may vary by Regency app for details. You know, it comes down to, you know, it's watching the studio episode one. I've only seen two episodes, but.
Starting point is 00:32:52 Yeah, we haven't finished it. Yeah. But the first episode, it's the marketing department that decides. They're like, can we sell this? Well, people watch this. Let's do the numbers. Not passion for something, not I love this. This is great. It will find an audience. It's all about money. It's all about packaging. You can't pitch a project to a studio or a network unless you have a package, a showrunner, a great script, a great five year treatment. A, a, an actress or an actor who brings value. It is so difficult to get something made. And what the ironic thing is, is that California, Los Angeles, which has always been the mecca for Hollywood, it is, they're not making anything here.
Starting point is 00:33:47 How is that possible? It's like not having ice cream in flow, well, I don't know, I was going to give an analogy. It's like not having ice in Alaska. I don't know. It's just, it just doesn't make sense to me. And you'd think that they would say, hey, you're going to get the biggest tax cut, tax break. If you make it here, we're going to make it easy for you. I remember when I was just shooting some exterior stuff from my movie and they were like,
Starting point is 00:34:10 oh, if you shoot the Hollywood sign, you have to pay $5,000. I go, why? And we had to pay $5,000 to, that's what they, they are doing everything in their power to not make you. She's so interesting. Yeah. Because California, I mean, they seem to have a fair amount of money. I think they had a surplus in the budget a couple of years ago. Yeah, maybe things will change.
Starting point is 00:34:36 From all the money they took for people photographing the Hollywood side. Photographed the Hollywood sign. They made a fortune off that. When you look back, like you've done so many things. Like, I mean, it wasn't just the flash. It was like this whole universe. It was Arrow and Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow and all that. I always wonder, are actors paid more?
Starting point is 00:34:58 like double their salary for like if they cross over oh my gosh i mean this was you know talk about fights with warner brothers this is one of the first surprises to me so in flash's season one they did the first crossover and it was just flash and arrow and it was i think stephen david and emily crossed over to flash and grant carlos and i crossed over to arrow and the offer to do two jobs at the same time to do the same role when we guest starred on Arrow was top of show.
Starting point is 00:35:36 So at the time, less than $10,000. Could you say no? This was the first inclination of like, oh, to me, because I was like, this is crazy. Like, you hired me to play the role of Caitlin's snow. Top of show, by the way, is not your salary. Is not what you're making on the flash or whatever. It's insane.
Starting point is 00:35:53 It's like you're going to be on another show that's going to air. And you're going to do this job at the same time. you're going to work twice as hard. So you're doing two jobs. We're going to give you a couple grand. We're going to pay you a fraction of what you're paid to do that job on the flash. Like it just was.
Starting point is 00:36:07 That doesn't make sense. If you're going to do that show, they're going to pay you. And the other show was like, no, that's our budget. That was the whole thing. It's like we can't afford that in our budget. So it has to be top of show. Oh, my God. So that was season one.
Starting point is 00:36:21 You cheap, son of a bitches. And I think. I said it. She didn't. And, you know, again, And when we signed on to Flash, Arrow existed, and Flash was a pilot. And at that time, they did not bake crossovers. They didn't put crossovers into our contracts.
Starting point is 00:36:37 I think we were the last show that they stopped doing that. I think any other show like Legends or Supergirl or whatever, it was in their contracts that if they crossed over to another show, they would only get a fraction of their whatever. I think, I mean, as yours went on, I think that changed more for people like Stephen and Grant And Melissa, because, I mean, I know someone who said, no, pay me my salary. And they wrote that person out of the crossovers. They're like, no. Great.
Starting point is 00:37:09 Write me out. I don't have to work as much. I don't give a shit. Yeah. I would have been that guy. I know I would have been like, no, no, I don't want to do that. I'm just going to do the show that I'm on. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:18 So thank you very much. But I don't, you know. What if you don't like that show? And that's the thing is like all, you know. I don't want to be on that show. My house was 20 minutes from our flash set, but the Supergirl set was almost an hour away. And, you know, yeah. You ever work with assholes?
Starting point is 00:37:36 Sure. What do you do? I always love this question. When I work with an asshole? Yeah, what are you doing when you work with an asshole? Do you just ignore it? I smile and play nice and, like, just know that this is temporary. I like to call people out.
Starting point is 00:37:51 Yeah. But, you know. I think that's a little easier as a man. Yeah. No, I absolutely. I think now it's changing, right? Don't you feel like things have changed a little bit in a good way? I remember an experience I had on Flash. And I think at this point I was already, I don't think I was maybe directing or maybe I was directing that episode. But someone on set called me bossy and I pulled them aside whenever, you know, there was a minute. And I said, would you say that to a man? And they were like, well, you were being bossy. And I was like, but you wouldn't have called a man bossy. You're just calling me bossy because I'm a woman. I like that you did that that's good that's power that's like that's saying fuck you I mean it's just yeah and I knew this person had a daughter and I just was like just consider it yeah like because yeah put that in perspective you're absolutely right a man you would
Starting point is 00:38:42 have called assertive or in control I would have said an asshole hey don't be an asshole here buddy would you say that if I was a woman no it's bossy There you go. Do you consider yourself a scream queen at all? Because some people will say, oh, Mr. Brooks, Friday the 13th, the craziest, John Carpenter's the Word. I love the crazies. Prana, you know? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:39:04 I think I've definitely made a conscious choice after I'd done quite a few of them. I was like, oh, I need to stop. Like, it's time to do something else. Do you go to horror cons ever? I've not been invited. You should be. You've done enough. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:39:18 I would love to. Oh, that's not true. I did one this year with Derek. A friend of mine, Jonathan Sadowski, do you know Sadowski? Sadowski texted me. He was like, oh, there's one in Vegas. We should all go. And I, like, it was very last minute.
Starting point is 00:39:28 And I begged to be invited and, like, went last minute with Derek and Amanda. But that was the first one I'd ever done. Have you talked to, you know, Derek? You know, Derek. You know, Derek, who played Jason? Oh, yeah, yeah. I've met him before. The nicest guy.
Starting point is 00:39:40 Oh, yeah. Bald guy. Yeah. Yeah. He's really sweet. I know you've directed. You loved it. Loved it.
Starting point is 00:39:47 Do you want to do it again? Absolutely. Have you thought of, like, do you write? Not really. You should. But I'm trying to, the moment I'm in right now in my life, I think as I, you know, look at my kids and sort of reflect, is I'm trying to write down stuff from my life because I'm already finding that I'm forgetting things. But yeah, I hear that. But like a lot of like your stories in life, it's you.
Starting point is 00:40:12 And so they always say write what you know. And I do that. I want to do a graphic novel sort of based on my life, the ups and downs. And it's like, it's some dark, dark stuff and some celebrities. stuff and things that are interesting and you know so I'd like to do that eventually um but I also want to do like a show based just on moments of my life that's just like this is this there's standalone episodes of like maybe I was 13 here this is this adult going through this yeah so maybe um uh what do you do for your mental health I mean let's start with exercise
Starting point is 00:40:50 Like, I feel like that's something I learned, especially on Flash, you know, when the hours were so long, we were filming in Vancouver and, you know, we did a lot of nights on that show and you're just sort of feeling topsy-turvy. I found that no matter how tired I was, I needed to get up and do at least 30 minutes of exercise just to, like, move my body. And that changed things for me. Do you meditate? I try. He's really good at him. It's hard. He can meditate.
Starting point is 00:41:17 I like the app. I need, like, I feel like I need someone holding. my, I use headspace. Calm or headspace? Headspace. I feel like I need someone holding my hand through it. I'm surprised they're not a sponsor. Calm or headspace.
Starting point is 00:41:28 What hell's wrong with you? Yeah. Do you meditate? I try, but I need help. It's a hard practice. Yeah, it is. It is hard. Second guessing fate.
Starting point is 00:41:39 Yes. It's a movie coming out. You're not exactly sure when. No. Tell me about this. When did you film this? We filmed this in August of 2024. in Edmonton in Alberta, Canada.
Starting point is 00:41:53 I've been in Edmonton. Very cold. Well, this was summer. I was actually really surprised by how warm it got in the summer. Did you go to the mall? The giant mall? We did. It's huge. It is huge. And I also kind of feel like, at least in my head, when I think of a mall, I don't think of a roller coaster. And the Edmonton Mall has an ice rink, a roller coaster. It just has so much more than just stores. Oh, yeah. Yes.
Starting point is 00:42:19 So second-guessing fate It was made by CW I think it's a copro with Bell Actually in Canada So I think it'll be released up there It's a nice transition for me It's like a youthful rom-com Especially for the CW
Starting point is 00:42:36 And I feel like what was nice about it Is they're trying to be a little contemporary And you know It's about a woman who has had no luck In her dating life And then she's very She sort of gets into this situation where she has two men that she's met and, you know, seeing where her heart takes her. Wow, I like that.
Starting point is 00:42:57 It's fun. It's, again, it's, you know. You're the lead. Yes. Yes. And it's, again, as I said, contemporary. And like we were talking about earlier, with timing, you never know when someone's going to enter your life. And if you're in a place to receive that.
Starting point is 00:43:11 Yeah, like, when you met Hayes, were you ready to, like, settle down? I don't, I mean, so we met your. before we started dating, actually. We started dating. We probably met four or five years before we started dating, just because we ran in the same. But you didn't think twice of it? Well, I think he was always dating someone and I was always dating someone. And, yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:36 And it just kind of happened. Yes, again, timing. There was a familiarity. Yes, absolutely. And then it was like, okay, all right. And then. So I met Hayes because of Friday the 13th. Yeah, by the way, I didn't put that Friday the 13th.
Starting point is 00:43:47 he's been there every episode but you know ben feldman is a very talented actor have you ever had him no oh he's wonderful and so funny uh and i met ben when we did friday the 13th and then i met his then girlfriend now wife and i was like oh i thought i liked you ben but i love your wife like she's the best and michel and i really hit it off and hayes is their best friend he was the best man at their wedding and you've been married for five years almost eight I'm off. Have you ever been starstruck? Starstruck.
Starting point is 00:44:23 Yes. Who? Megan Con with Ron Howard. I was like, oh my God, that's wrong in Howard. Ron Howard. I got a picture with him at a con and I was just like,
Starting point is 00:44:32 you did? Yeah, he was at a con. Because I think it was Mega Con when we were all there. With his daughter, Dallas? Yes. And I had lost my voice, so I couldn't speak to him, like literally.
Starting point is 00:44:42 But I just was in, I was definitely starstruck by him. What's your favorite Ron Howard movie? Apollo 13. No, I don't know. Didn't he direct Coon? I don't know if I ever saw that one. He directed, he's directed so many things.
Starting point is 00:44:55 So much. And I feel like, what was the, uh, he's just an unbelievable movie. Oh, a beautiful mind. Beautiful mind. Stunning. Yeah. He's an incredible storyteller. Yeah, I just.
Starting point is 00:45:08 And he started as an actor too. Mm-hmm. Oh, I know. Opie. Opie Cunningham. Mm-hmm. Well, Opie and then he was Richie Cunningham. And then, yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:16 I think it's really interesting. the way being a child actor can shape you. I think often, in my experience, a lot of child actors are really aware of what's going on. And I think that, and I think that was kind of the case for me is that I really loved the process of filmmaking and seeing it all. Yeah. Well, people also can go down the wrong path. A lot of child actors, many of them, you know, it's difficult, you know, if that's all you know, I'm glad I had a childhood. Yeah, I mean, I tell a story. So when you're a child actor on set, I mean, to go back to it's a business, like when you're a child actor, you only have so many hours you can be on set.
Starting point is 00:46:03 And so your time is extraordinarily valuable. So, you know, you can be on set for six hours, but three of those hours have to be spent in school and 30 minutes has to be at a lunch. you know, if you've wrapped or if you've finished the scene and they're doing and they're turning around and so we have 20 minutes and they're going to race you to the schoolroom to sit and bank those 20 minutes of schoolwork and you're on your way to the classroom and then you're like, you know what, I'm hungry. I would like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. So you go to Crafty to make yourself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. But a PA says, we literally don't have time for you to stop and make yourself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich because we need you in the classroom to get those minutes banked.
Starting point is 00:46:41 So I'm going to make you a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and then I'll bring it to you. So kid goes to school, does it, whatever. And then the next day, you know, once a peanut butter and jelly, don't worry, it's already on its way. And you see how very quickly it evolves to where is my peanut butter and jelly sandwich. So it can start innocently enough. But, you know, the evolution is. That they've created.

Starting point is 00:48:23 I think, you know, my father was an engineer. And when I went to college, I was an English major. And I think it just was, he couldn't fathom. Like, what are you going to do with an English degree? Like, it didn't make sense. Is he still with us? Yes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:48:37 my parents are and actually both of my grandparents on my dad's side are i just lost both my grandparents in last five years also my grandma in december that was the biggest the toughest loss was my first grandmother i was very close with but the last two were it's kind of finite it's it's just uh last night i thought about i thought of my grandmother i go wow i don't have blanche and irv anymore yeah wow that's crazy i don't have that much time left with you know i don't have that much time left with my grandparents either and it's it's tough i'm going as i told you i'm going to see them on thursday yeah you almost i know it's yeah it's you love them oh my oldest child is named after my grandma really yeah what's her name uh her name is mary sue miles mary sue miles i named my dog irv uh who passed
Starting point is 00:49:30 i lost irv and erv human earth the same year and then um my dog here is blanche made out of my grandma. Such good names. Blanche and Charlie is named after my grandfather passed years ago. But yeah, sorry for making it. No, no, no. But it's a beautiful thing. Yeah, I'm incredibly lucky to have had my grandparents as long as I've had them.
Starting point is 00:49:51 And, like, they've been such an important presence in my life. You know, I said that at my, my grandfather passed at the funeral, I said, I think in the speech I just said something like, you know, I just, I'm just so thankful that I've got to have him in my life for so long yeah you know so many people can't say that it's true and uh yeah you get me emotional um well there's another there's oh yeah yeah here we go this is shit talking with daniel pannevaker these are the top tiers they get to ask some questions uh patron dot com slash inside of you uh if you want to join and support the show we could use your help and we love your help so this is from raj rapid fire okay tell me about a time you're able to avoid
Starting point is 00:50:36 giving into peer pressure. I think I'm pretty good at giving into peer pressure or not giving into peer pressure. I was at a bachelorette party last weekend, the weekend before and announced upon everyone's arrival. My bedtime is 9 p.m. And at 9.30, someone like came out was like, where's Danielle? What's wrong with her? I sleep in bed asleep.
Starting point is 00:50:55 9 p.m? Wow, you can really do that. I mean, my kids get up early, so I'm up at 6 or 6.30 no matter what. I'm in bed by 10. Yeah. I'm in 10. Listen, I went out hard the next night. I just knew.
Starting point is 00:51:07 I knew I only had one good night in. You're not a big drinker, but what's your cocktail of choice? I'm mostly drinking tequila these days. Yeah, tequila's the best one for you, I think. I mean, not that they're good, but it's like, it's the only one that's not a downer. Yeah. I don't feel, like, I feel fine when I drink it at night and I don't feel horrible. We're not promoting tequila.
Starting point is 00:51:26 It's true. Matt B, what is your go-to coping mechanism for stress and anxiety? Exercise. Yeah, moving my body. Linda M. what do you wish you had more time to do? Sleep. How many hours do you get?
Starting point is 00:51:42 I feel like I need a good, like pre-kids. I could easily sleep nine hours. And I feel like my body still wants that. But I would say I get somewhere between seven and eight these days. That's good. Yes, it's still very good. I don't sleep well. Leanne, what causes are you passionate about and how can others get involved?
Starting point is 00:52:00 I mean, one of the big ones I've been involved with for a long time is UNICEF. A lot of my stuff has always. been with kids, I think, because I had done, I was a little bit of a kid actor and done Disney Channel and Disney stuff that resonated with kids, so UNICEF. And then I work with Baby to Baby and Art of Elysium. Nice. Yeah. Taylor Arro was working for Disney difficult. My experience working for Disney was not difficult. I mean, I was never on one of their series. So I would do a couple little movies for them and that you're kind of dipping in and dipping out. It's not like when you're, and again, I don't know her deal, but like if you were Miley Cyrus on Hanna, Montana and they, well, again, it's similar to like when you're doing a show for Warner Brothers.
Starting point is 00:52:48 And Warner Brothers feels that because, or part of your contract is because they're paying you so much money and you're committed to their show, they have you in first position. So you kind of, I mean, per the contract, you know, you can't write a motorcycle. You can't materially change your appearance without their permission. There's all these things. And so because I was never on a series for Disney like that, I didn't experience that. Oh. Little Lisa says, what negative self-talk do you struggle with? As a parent, I feel like I am constantly failing.
Starting point is 00:53:20 You know, body image is always really hard. I think, you know, hopefully we're changing things for future generations. I think so. I think there's this like, I don't know. Oh, it feels like it gets worse. It's like, you know, it's like everybody wants to take something to get really skinny instead of doing the work. And, you know, everybody wants to do work to themselves.
Starting point is 00:53:43 Like, I don't know if we know the consequences of all of that down the road. It's like all these people were putting filler in their faces and now we're realizing, oh, maybe the filler doesn't go away. Maybe that wasn't the best idea. Well, we're saying, we're just saying it's okay to do all these things. Like, it's okay to be this and okay to do this. Yes. I think it's okay to be healthy.
Starting point is 00:54:01 Yes. That's what's okay. So whatever that is, and do I always do what's healthy? No. So that's my fault. I need to be better. I was trying to explain to my five-year-old recently the concept of consequences. And it's like, well, all of our choices have consequences.
Starting point is 00:54:18 If I choose to eat kale, the consequence will be one thing. If I choose to eat ice cream, the consequence will be another thing. Well, especially, you know, growing up, getting older, it's like, I know that if I eat like shit before I go to bed, I will. Not only not sleep well, but I will feel like shit the next day. It's just, but I do it a lot. And last night I played hockey and I go, I want in an al burger. I want fries. And I go, you know what? No. And I had a salad, a light salad and chicken. Good job. And how do you feel today? Better than if you ate. I feel absolutely better. Good. Not great, but better. But if I, but it's not something that happens just
Starting point is 00:55:02 overnight. No. It's something like, if I continue to do this, well, tonight's horror movie night we have in my house. What do you watch? We're going through all the, uh, uh, final destination movie. Oh, fun. So we're doing those. So we're on number two. First one was fun. How many are there? I think there's five. Okay. Starting point is 00:55:53 episodes of The Flash, would you immediately think, no, I'm done, or would you go like, I'd consider it. I would consider it. I would. We, you know, we're in this moment right now where we're doing a handful of conventions, a lot of, you know, the original cast members. And it's nice to see one another for a little bit. And also, six episodes is so different.
Starting point is 00:56:14 I mean, our first season, we were doing 23 episodes plus a crossover, like six episodes. And you had a child. No, I didn't have my kids until. I had my oldest between seasons six and seven. Six and seven, but you still did season seven. And eight and nine. Right. So I'm saying you had a child during all the...
Starting point is 00:56:34 I did. How hard was that? Incredibly difficult. You know, I'm like... I mean, yeah, I could do a whole podcast on that. It's hard. It's, you know, I remember our first day back in season seven was like the hot, not the height of COVID, but it was deep into COVID. And, you know, having a tiny baby at home.
Starting point is 00:56:53 I was terrified. I mean, I think there were quite literally almost years that we didn't leave the house because we were so scared. And, you know, going back to work and it was a night shoot and I was still breastfeeding and just like, you know, sat down in the hair and makeup chair and just started crying. Like it was my first time away from my oldest baby. And like, I definitely was not in any state ready to do a night shoot. It was traumatizing. It was just, it was hard. It was challenging.
Starting point is 00:57:21 So, you know, I think ultimately we didn't do quite as many night shoots towards the end, but I mean, we still did them. By the way, people don't understand, like, you have to wear masks on sets and there's zones and you can't be, it's, I don't think I could do that. I remember shooting Guardians three and dealing with some of that. I think it was Guardians, maybe, yes, Gardens 3, and they had, they were very, you know, it was just, they demanded certain things. Yeah. And I understand, but it made it, it was uncomfortable.
Starting point is 00:58:03 Everybody was doing what they could to keep everybody safe. But, you know, I also, when I was Killer Frost, I had a full wig and the lace comes down here so you can't put a mask on or you're ripping the lace and then you rip the lace and it takes more time to glue it back down. I couldn't imagine because, like, wearing a mask, with my bald head at the time that would have been brutal anyway this has been a real treat it's been a pleasure i know that you know you were like ah what are we going to talk about but like this is this is what we talk about just i just i love this to see you and catch up i loved having you

And I just think that it's important to be grateful. It really is no matter where you are, what you're doing. And try to motivate yourself to do something else if you don't like what you're doing, you know, do the best you can.
