Starting point is 00:00:00 All systems are going. Ladies and gentlemen, Chris Van Blitz! Well, what do you say we do this thing? Welcome back to another audio adventure on Insight. I'm Chris Van Vleet. So excited to have you back with us and so excited to sit down once again with Margot Robbie. She is just one of the sweetest people on the face of the planet. And it just doesn't seem fair that someone is this talented as well.
Starting point is 00:00:29 Think of the movie she's been in. The Wolf of Wall Street, Suicide Squad, I Tanya, Bombshell, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, I mean, that's just naming a few of them. And she has a new movie coming out on December 23rd called Babylon. It's directed by Damien Chazelle. And I mean, think of the movies that he's directed. Whiplash, which I loved, La La Land, First Man, so good. So I can't wait for you to see Babylon when it comes out on December 23rd.
Starting point is 00:00:56 And I was honored for this interview to sit down with not only Margot, but also her co-star from the movie, Diego Calva. So share this episode with someone who you think might love this. And tag the movie, tag at Babylon movie. Tag me at Chris Van Fleet so we can share this out. Starting point is 00:02:18 followed me, please give me a following there at chris.vanveleet. And I'm just at Chris VanVleet on every other platform. Let's do this thing. Please welcome Margo Robbie and Diego. Calva. Last time I saw you, I found out you were a little bit of a WWE fan. Yeah. Is John Sina still? He is. He's still your favorite? He's so worth the hype. He's the best. I love him. I really love him. Even though we can't see him. Yeah, yeah, even though you can't see him. How do I get invited to a party like this? Oh, man, stick in town, kid. This is Hollywood. That's all it takes. No, I mean, I, I, I would all come to a Damien Chiselle set. Okay. Because being at that party, like you see it on screens,
Starting point is 00:03:03 I mean, that's kind of how it felt. It was the roaring 20s then. It's the 20s now. I know. Doesn't feel as roaring, perhaps, though. I don't know. No, not quite the same. No.
Starting point is 00:03:14 I love this idea in the movie that people may not last forever, but once it's on film, your performance lasts forever. I think that's a pretty magical thing. Yeah. Yeah. I love that line. Yeah, Gene Smart has this beautiful scene at the end with Brad, and they talk about exactly that.
Starting point is 00:03:29 And she says, you know, you'll die and stuff. but you'll dine with ghosts and angels forever. Because you're captured on cellular, and that line always made me cry. It's so, it's so beautiful. Do you remember what the moment was for you when you wanted to become an actor? And I wanted to become an actor. Honestly, I was doing boom operation, was a boom operator, and an actor didn't show up. And the director asked me, like, would you do this small role?
Starting point is 00:03:57 And I felt like, okay, this could be fun. And I just keep doing it and doing it. and now I'm here sitting with Margarov. It's a very manny story. Just like a movie. Just like a movie. That's crazy. And I love this other line in the film
Starting point is 00:04:12 that like a movie sets the most magical place on Earth. And I've had the great fortune of being on a few movie sets. It's true. It is true. What is it that's so magical about a movie set? I don't know. Maybe it's the fact that we're adults when we're all playing make-believe on such a huge scale. And it feels like we just hacked the system to be able to keep playing for the rest of
Starting point is 00:04:31 of our lives. I don't know. Maybe it's that. Yeah, like freedom. You can breathe freedom there. Yeah. Everything can happen. Yeah, anything's possible. I love the scene where your character is crying on command. Yeah. Repeatedly. Yeah. How? How do you do this? Just I can cry and command.
Starting point is 00:04:48 Seriously, you can? Yeah, pretty much. Yeah. Wow. And like Nellie says, oh, I just think of home. What is it that you think? I just think of something sad. Damien asked me that too. He's like, what do you think of something sad? Like, how sad are we talking about it? we talking about? You know, family dying and things like that. Oh, it's awful. Yeah, yeah, but it works. So these, the actual tears you were crying? Yeah. I also, if I have to do a lot of crying,
Starting point is 00:05:13 I kind of get, I try to not sleep a lot for days leading up to it because the more tired I am, the easier it is to cry. You know, when you're really tired and just kind of on the brink of tears if you're really, really overtired? So yeah, I just get like two, three hours sleep for three days leading up to it, and then I can try. Oh, that's it. It's just that easy. Yeah. Give it a try. Think of something sad and don't sleep. And don't sleep. That is just the simplest thing. I also worked on a soap for three years, so I practiced the crying thing.
Starting point is 00:05:41 The United States Soccer Federation present the U.S. soccer podcast. My name is David Goss, and I'm joined by my co-host, Megan Klinberg. And now we're giving people an inside look at the World Cup. Time's ticking. I think you can feel the intensity. All the guys are wanting to really stake their claim, and they want to be on that World Cup roster. no doubt about it. Hosting the World Cup on the home soil
Starting point is 00:06:02 comes with its pressures, but we're just really excited just as the people are. The US Soccer podcast, presented by Henko. Follow and listen on your favorite platform. What do you think something you'll take from working with Damien
Starting point is 00:06:14 that you'll bring with you to every other set that you work on now? God, so many things you go first. The concentration, like he's just the hardest worker on set sometimes and he put you into the next level. He made me did
Starting point is 00:06:30 or find things on me that I didn't know that I had, you know. So that kind of just hard workers kind of situation, I think that's something that I tried to keep with me. Yeah, and that relentless pursuit of perfection. It doesn't have to be perfection in that it's perfect. It's that it's got to be better than you ever imagined. And if it's not that, you haven't got to take yet. And I've just, I hate that feeling on set where you move on
Starting point is 00:06:54 because you have to do time constraints or whatever, but not on a Damien Chazel set. You will go again and again. and again, until you've gotten it better and better and more and exciting. And, yeah, you never know when it's going to be his version of perfection, but you give it your all until he says, we got it. And those are some long takes. We did our one-a, which was like a two-and-a-half-minute one-a-thirty-six times.
Starting point is 00:07:15 And that's a record for me. Yeah. Wow, yeah, that's true. Well, the film is incredible. Thank you. So good to see you guys. Congratulations. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:07:24 All right. Well, there we go. Margo and Diego. So good. By the way, crying on command, that is impressive. Although, you know, I guess if that's a skill that you have in your tool belt, acting is probably the right job for you. Babylon is in theaters on December 23rd.
Starting point is 00:07:47 Please let me know what you think of this one. Tag me, tag at Babylon movie, and we'll share this out. I'll leave you with a quote from Damien Chazelle's movie, Lollaland, which I also loved. But this quote seems so fitting for... The movie we talked about, but just for this podcast in general, people love what other people are passionate about. Remember that scene? You remember that line in La La Land?
Starting point is 00:08:15 So good. Be great. Be grateful. We will see you on the next one for some more insight. The Hammer Alley podcast, an 80s flashback mockumentary. Back in the 80s, there were a thousand bands trying to make it in the world of rock, but there was one band that had it all. Alley.
Starting point is 00:08:34 Whatever happened to Hammer Alley? How did they go from top of the rock? I'm looking for a music video. They're a band from 1987. Hammer Alley. Ever heard of them?
Starting point is 00:08:43 To Rock Bottom. Dude, I was born in 1987. I can't believe he's doing this. Hammer Allie. Follow and listen on your favorite platform.
