Starting point is 00:00:07 It's just for a minute I'd fall asleep and not of ideas. I don't know what the times I think of each of you and it's shivered right beside you. Hello, hello, and welcome to Investigated Podcast. I'm your host, Chad, alongside my wife, Sherry. Hello, everyone. I hope you're doing a great this Friday morning. Yeah, I hope everyone is doing fantastic out there. It is December 30th, 2020, and we got some amazing news in the case.
Starting point is 00:01:38 of the Idaho student murders. We do officially now have an arrest in the case. This is coming from Fox News Digital. This is coming from media outlets everywhere that there is officially an arrest in the four Idaho student murders. We have a name. We have a suspect. We have where he is from, what he did,
Starting point is 00:01:57 as far as for a living or I guess where he went to college. This is all very, very new news as of today. So officially now, we have authorities have arrested a suspect in the November 13th murders of the four University of Idaho students. Brian Christopher Coburger, 28, was taken into custody by local police and the FBI at 3 a.m. in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The law enforcement source said Friday. And so this is obviously huge news. This is something that many people were questioning whether we would ever hear is that there was going to be a suspect under arrest.
Starting point is 00:02:35 And the interesting part about this guy is he was, a criminal justice PhD student. He is 28 years old. And so obviously, I'm assuming he had recently graduated or, so he has graduated, right? I believe so. I'm not positive, but I know he's either a PhD student or just formally graduated. Yeah, the thing about, the thing about PhD, obviously, is it takes a while to get, right? I mean, and so it is possible he just recently graduated or was still in school. But what makes this very interesting, we're going to talk a little more about this in just a second and at least all the details we know as far as the arrest. But just to briefly talk about it, I think this could explain why, at the very least, it's taken six weeks
Starting point is 00:03:17 or more for an arrest to be made. Now, we don't know how they came about this arrest, but if we read on in this article, it talks about they found a white Hyundai Alantra at where they arrested him at. And this was in Pennsylvania, Scranton, Pennsylvania. So this white Hyundai Alontera obviously was at least a partial factor in how they found him or how they made this arrest, I believe. Now, yes, they could have also had DNA evidence. Now, recently, as of yesterday, the rental home in Moscow, Idaho was covered up with people that were there to clean the residence. That was today right now. Yeah, today and yesterday, I believe.
Starting point is 00:04:01 And so typically when that happens is they have gathered and concluded all evidence that they could possibly. get from that home and then they bring in a crime scene cleanup crew and that crime scene clean up crew goes through and cleans everything very thoroughly and so a lot of people were alluding to the fact that they had a crime scene crew in there that either they had gathered all the evidence they possibly could or that possibly they had a suspect either where it was about to be under arrest or was there under arrest so you know it is pretty interesting time in that they had a cleanup crew in the home and now that we have a suspect under arrest and today is Kaylee and Maddie's memorial service, and Kaylee's mom vowed that they would not have a memorial
Starting point is 00:04:42 service for her child until an arrest was made. So these are all coincidences to me that they're cleaning the house. Mom said they're not going to have a memorial service, although it is today. I have heard reports that they have ceased the cleaning at the house now from this arrest at 3 a.m. So I'm not sure about that. That's just reports I'm hearing that are coming in. And if that is true, if for whatever reason they stopped the cleaning of the house, you know, that could either mean they were done, which is doubtful because usually that takes, you know, three, four, five days however long. Or is that they did not know that they had a suspect until the early morning hours of last night. Because as of yesterday, they were pretty much asking for help in these murders saying they did not have a suspect. that was of yesterday.
Starting point is 00:05:36 There was no suspects. They're still looking for the Alantra. They were still looking for somebody knowing something somewhere somehow. Yeah, and actually, this was not just yesterday. It was the day before also. I mean, they were begging the public for help. And, you know, there were many law enforcement officials
Starting point is 00:05:53 that were on many news outlets that were saying, you know, what this means to them potentially is that they were at a standstill in the investigation. When they are six weeks later coming back and then also saying, you know, please, public, if you have anything, please let us know. That just looked very odd and not odd, but at least to a lot of professionals and people that are in the law enforcement, I guess, world, they saw this as potentially being at kind of a stop in the case.
Starting point is 00:06:22 Right. Or they could have been doing this to throw this guy off, knowing that he had a Ph.D. in criminal justice. Maybe they were doing that to throw him off to make him feel like they weren't hot and heavy on. this trail. Now, Coburger, the suspect, was being held for extradition in Monroe County Court for first-degree murder, and this was issued by Moscow Police Department and the Lata County Prosecutor's Office in connection to the slay-ins of Ethan Chapin, Zana Kurnodal, Kalee Goncaves, and Madison Mogan. So the suspect is a graduate student at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, according to college website. So he is currently a student, a graduate student, is what it
Starting point is 00:07:01 sounds like, because it says is a graduate student. Pullman is a 15-minute drive from the rental home where the four students were stabbed. So this is a very short drive from Pullman, which is where he resided, to the Idaho murdered, a murder victim's home. Sorry, I'm getting that caught up. But so very short drive. And obviously this guy drove this white Hyundai-Alantera literally all the way across country. He drove it to Pennsylvania.
Starting point is 00:07:30 and it makes sense to do that, I guess, if you are wanted, and everywhere they're looking is in that region. Now, he's going to know, you know, this guy, if anyone, is going to know how police are going to search a grid area and all this. He obviously has been listening to news reporting and everything else. He probably figured, look, they're probably going to look in the southwest or the west or the northwest as far as this white Honda launcher. But if I can take this vehicle, the one thing that they have on me,
Starting point is 00:07:57 all the way across country, to the east coast, Just your chances of being called, at least in his mind probably, from the white Honda-A-Lontera were much more slim, you know, much more slim of a chance. But I wonder. He's kind of a dumb criminal to have the Alontera where he was staying because if he's studying criminal justice and they find the Alantra parked where they arrested him. I mean, to me that's kind of dumb. He obviously knew that everyone's looking for his car. Yeah. Now, a press conference is scheduled today in Moscow, Idaho at 1 p.m. Pacific time.
Starting point is 00:08:34 So that's 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time here. And we're going to try to cover that for you. If we can do that live and cover that live and then also comment on it, you know, directly after the press conference. We will absolutely do that for you guys. But this is absolutely groundbreaking news. This is something that is amazing to hear. And so we actually are going to, you know, be able to hold someone accountable. And just to read a little further, a white Honda launcher was towed from the home where the suspect was arrested.
Starting point is 00:09:02 Law enforcement officials said. And this is just, you know, this was a small Idaho town of 25,000 people, you know, a very small town. You know, and Pullman, Washington, just being so close to where Moscow is and these students. Now, did he have interactions with these students prior to the killings? Very likely, right? I mean, because if he was a student not, you know, 15 minutes away, I'm sure that he went to Moscow often to party or to hang out or to do whatever. Did he have connections with these people? These are things law enforcement officials should know pretty fast because, you know, with this group of four college students that were very, seemed to be very popular, they were, some of them were in fraternities, sororities, you know, you're going to know a lot of people.
Starting point is 00:09:51 And a lot of people are going to know a lot of people that are typically around you. So they should be able to go to these other students to say, do you know this guy? Have you ever seen him? Where have you seen him? So on and so forth. I think there's going to be a ton of information that we should find out here shortly. But we also have to remember a lot of people are going to think just because of suspects in custody,
Starting point is 00:10:09 now we're going to get all this plethora of information. And that's not necessarily the case because there is still a trial that they have to, you know, maintain integrity for and so on and so forth. They're going to do whatever they can to prosecute this person. And so whoever this guy's defense team is, you know, depending on what comes out in the public is whether or not and how much information that the defense team could use for his advantage. So they're going to also still remain probably quieter than you think about this arrest and how they even got to the arrest potentially. But hopefully they at least say how they got to it.
Starting point is 00:10:43 There's been so much pressure on law enforcement this entire time about they weren't doing their job. They weren't doing enough. I'm just very curious though how this was broken. What it sounds to me, at least to me, it sounds like it was. it was a last minute something, a last minute tip that came through. Because, you know, like I said, the past couple days, they've been begging for help from the public. That may be some way to throw him off. I'm not sure.
Starting point is 00:11:07 But there was a lot of people saying that, you know, they were searching for a white Hyundai Alontera to throw the real suspect off. But obviously, that's not the case. This guy did have the white Honda-Alantra. That white Hyundai-A-Lantra was 100% connected to the murders. Yeah, it was found in the body cam of the police officers. that night in front of the house. It was also seen at the gas station video, the liquor store video, and it was shown as speeding off. And there's actually people that took the still shots of the white elantra from the gas station video and kind of like blown it up and distorted however they could to see actually what the suspect looks like inside the car.
Starting point is 00:11:48 And what you can see in this picture, it looks like somebody that had a backwards cap on. and that's why I think they were leaning towards the ex-boyfriend, Kaylee's ex-boyfriend. But obviously, this is not Kaylee's ex-boyfriend. This is a totally different random dude. And my question is, you know, what was his relationship to the victims? Was he trying to date one of them and got his feelings hurt? There is speculation that this is just speculation, hearsay things, that he did sell a car to Kaylee recently. a ran roper, what is it called?
Starting point is 00:12:26 The range rover, I guess. There's speculation that people are saying that he sold a car to her is the relationship. I don't know, but that's what I really want to know. But talking about this guy, I thought it was really interesting in his mugshot picture. He's got the suicide vest thing on, but his hair is fairly short. With him being a PhD going to school for his PhD in criminal ology, our criminal justice, I'm just wondering, is his hair that short because he was trying to be that smart that he shaved his head before he committed these crimes? So that there would be no hair follicles, no evidence of, like, at least hair trace evidence at the scene.
Starting point is 00:13:11 Because his hair is pretty short in the thing. And people said he's been hiding out. If he's been hiding out, he's not going and getting a haircut or anything like that, right? Yeah. And also, just some things are coming out right now, and I'm not sure if this is even going to be a thing. But he, according to Brian Inton, and he's really good at reporting. He's been all over this case. He's been all over the case.
Starting point is 00:13:41 This was 14 minutes ago. Brian Enton said, I am told when Idaho quadruple homicide suspect Brian Koberger was in custody. he asked if anyone else was arrested. I'm told he had a quiet blank stare, but he had asked if anyone else was arrested. Now, there are some other reports that I'm seeing on Twitter, and I don't know if any of this is actually going to come out as true or not. But there have been a couple people, and I don't know if this is true,
Starting point is 00:14:08 but there have been a couple people show that someone else had been arrested. Two other guys, yeah. In Pocono Mountains, and potentially in connection to the Idaho College murders, law enforcement officials tell this particular reporter. Nick Boyer, but not sure. Not sure if that's going to come out as true or not. Not sure if this guy is the only guy. What we do know, at least, is that as of right now, the mainstream media is only reporting one person as a suspect and one person that has been arrested. Now, like I said,
Starting point is 00:14:39 the internet is talking about other potential suspects could have been arrested as well. And it's weird that he asked, too. Yeah, but we do know Brian Inton has said that, you know, he asked if anyone else had been arrested when he was arrested and taken into custody. So was this done by one or more people? Now, what I can say is if this other person that was potentially arrested in Poconos, the Pocono Mountains, if this is some kind of connection, I guess if this guy was arrested, he was part of something called GamerGate, potentially. I don't know if that means anything, but I guess some kind of radicalization as far as whatever they do, these pictures I'm looking at of this guy that could be.
Starting point is 00:15:20 be connected and he's holding AR-15 in some of the photos. So don't know, but we just, we don't have any confirmation on that whatsoever. That may have zero to do with this. Well, and I'm not sure what the in-cell group is, but a lot of people are saying that they were connected with that as well. The in-cell? Yeah. Now, he does have an extradition or extradition here in at 3.30 p.m. Eastern Standard time on Tuesday, January 3rd in Monroe County. So this will be January 3rd. he will have his extradition here. And so it looks like he will be in Monroe County at least until January 3rd, as what we're hearing right now.
Starting point is 00:15:57 So let's also talk briefly and let's go back just a minute about some of the things that we had talked about before. Now, law enforcement had, I believe at one point in time, come out and said the skinned dog that was approximately what, seven or eight miles from the Moscow home of the four students, you know, I believe law enforcement at one point in time it came out and said that that was not connected, but, you know, a lot of law enforcement experts came out and said, you know, it just sounds too coincidental for that not to somehow be connected. And for those of you that do not know what we're talking about, there was a dog that was skinned. It was a older couple that lived on a pretty large
Starting point is 00:16:39 piece of land not far from the Moscow home. And they, I guess every night would let their dog out. the dog would go outside, use the bathroom, five or ten minutes later come back in. And this one particular night, approximately a month before the murders, the dog went outside, did not return. The homeowners went looking for the dog along with other neighbors, and they actually found the dog skinned. Only thing that was left was a fur on the head. And the paws. And I think the dog had basically been filleted with some kind of pretty obviously sharp knife. And so that had been a big speculation.
Starting point is 00:17:15 Was this a sign from the killer that he was going to commit a crime or at least he wanted people to look back on this? This is all very psychological stuff. And if this guy has a Ph.D. in criminal justice, you know, he's going to do things that he has learned that killers or psychopaths do in typical murders. Signs and things like that. Obviously, obviously he has a fascination or whatever it may be with crime, right? And a lot of people that go to college for this stuff, this is what they live and breathe. It's crime. They want to catch the people.
Starting point is 00:17:45 They want to do this. But in some cases, some of the best people at committing crimes in the past have been ex-law enforcement or people that have been to college for that. And that's what he has been in college for him. And I also want to bring up, you know, just recently, I think three or four days ago, there was a video that came out with Kaylee and Maddie talking after they left the corner bar, the corner pub bar. And they had been talking to, he was either the bartender or the bouncer. I'm not sure. Adam. And Kaylee said, what did you tell Adam?
Starting point is 00:18:18 And Madison said, I told them everything. Well, there's speculation now that people are saying that Adam's come out and said that, or somebody came out saying that there was a creep following them at the bar and they extracted the dude from the bar. Some creep that was following them is what people are saying was going on at the bar. And that was that conversation between the two girls. I don't know, but there are reports that Adams come out and said that there was some kind of creep following them at the bar. And maybe this is a piece of the puzzle right here is at the bar. Yeah. Well, I mean, and I think there were other reports, right, that people had said that they believed they had saw a white vehicle that was circling or at least around the bar the night they were at the food truck.
Starting point is 00:19:03 And so, you know, obviously, listen, this guy, you know, if he is the one. that actually committed these murders, which right now he is charged for it. That doesn't necessarily mean he positively did, but he is charged for it. Obviously, he had been probably watching them the whole night. He had, you know, he didn't live there. And so he, I would assume, had probably planned this more than likely for a little while. This was not something that he just did off a whim that night. I don't think, I don't necessarily even think that it was something that he got pissed off about that night and then he did it. And if the dog is connected, the dog situation, if the dog situation is connected, he could have been planning this for over a month,
Starting point is 00:19:48 you know, and it could have just been the first step in this whole web of crazy psychopathic this, that he, his mind, you know, this is how people like that operate. Yeah, and even like seven months prior to this, he posted a survey on social media asking people just questions about if they were to commit a crime, what kind of feelings they would have. And I've got that survey if Chad wants to read it. Yeah. Did I not already read that? No, that was the first one that was. Oh, sorry. Sorry. So basically, he went into this ex-con, and we're talking about the suspect here. Right. The suspect went into this ex-con, I guess, group. And I don't know if it was on Facebook or where it was, but he went in this group and he was seeking either ex-cons or people that had committed crimes before for a research paper.
Starting point is 00:20:41 And he came in the group and he said, hello, my name is Brian, and I'm inviting you to participate in a research project that seeks to understand how emotions and psychological traits influence decision-making when committing a crime. In particular, this study seeks to understand the story behind your most recent criminal offense with an emphasis on your thoughts and feelings throughout your experience in the event that your most recent offense was not one that led to a case. conviction, you may still participate. Additional surveys are included after the open-ended section as to the best understand
Starting point is 00:21:10 your unique traits. The studies should take about 15 to 20 minutes to fully complete. Your identity and all answers provided completely confidential, and a link to the survey is also anonymous link. The research has been approved by the DeSelles University IRB. Participants must be 18 years of age or older. If you opt to participate, you may terminate at any time. So this was obviously like a research paper or something he was doing to understand
Starting point is 00:21:32 criminality and why people commit crimes. And the mindset of those people and how they feel. Yeah. She should be able to write a hell of a paper now. If he is the guy, he was researching his own brain pretty much. Yeah, I do think, though, from
Starting point is 00:21:49 what it sounds like right now, it really sounds like that this is very possible that there could be more than one arrest. Now, we do know that Brown Inton is very, you know, he has obviously a ton of sources. He's been on the ground in Moscow, Idaho for a news nation. I believe, right? And so he's been there. Mainstream media has used so many of his reports
Starting point is 00:22:08 and his reporting on the murders. And so for him to come out and say that he heard from this source that he had asked if there was anyone else arrested for this, that was like one of the first things that he asked and then kind of had a blank stare, you know, whatever. And looking at his mugshot, which we are going to use his mugshot for our thumbnail image for this episode. But yeah, looking at his mugshot, he looks like he just has dead eyes. You know, he looks at looks like a killer. He looks like someone that would have killed four people. Very creepy. Now, there is something I want to mention. I don't know if this is true, but you had showed me this a minute ago. And so, you know, if this is true, and I don't even necessarily
Starting point is 00:22:45 have to read, I'm not going to read everything. It says. Yeah, it's kind of foul language, but. But there is a post and there is a screenshot from someone. It looks to potentially be from 4chan. And for those of me that don't know what 4chan is, it's somewhat similar to like a Reddit it's a message board essentially, and you can be anonymous, I believe it could also be encrypted. But this anonymous person had posted, unless this is screenshoted,
Starting point is 00:23:13 or not screenshot it, but Photoshopped. This anonymous person posted Monday, December the 12th, 2020. So some days ago. And it basically says very vulgar stuff about what he did with the bodies, or parts of the bodies, I guess, during this.
Starting point is 00:23:31 killing and even talks about something pretty horrific about one of the victims. I'm not even going to go into the names or what he said because it's just, it's awful. But the last sentence does say, I'm hiding in the woods and shithole PA. Good luck catching me. Yeah, and that's just what a coincidence that they said I'm hiding in a shithole, Pennsylvania. Yeah. And that's where they find this guy. Now, unless this is, you know, like I said, unless this is photoshopped, which is very possible, you
Starting point is 00:24:01 never know on the internet today. But we will know, I guess, if this possibly had any connection to him for sure. But this was, if this is true, it was posted on December 12th, 2022. So that's been a while ago. And if that is an actual posting, whoever that was is more than likely him or possibly someone else that was arrested. So, I mean, this whole thing is crazy. It really is.
Starting point is 00:24:28 It is absolutely insane. But I'm very happy for the families of all these people that someone is finally in custody. Although this person being in custody is not going to bring back any of the lives that were lost in this. These were innocent victims of a horrific quadruple homicide. We obviously want to know why this person did what he did, and especially if it was more than one person, That's going to be an even crazier story. Which I really think it is. I think it's more than one person.
Starting point is 00:25:05 Because to get one person to get to a point in their mind to do something this horrific is one thing, right? But then to get to more than one person to commit some horrific stabbing, brutal murder like this, more than one person, that's got to be some type of radicalization, some type of weird cult belief thing. they might have had. We've seen this in other cult-type things before where, you know, people get led to believe a lot of craziness, or they have some kind of initiative in their mind. They think they're doing good for whatever by doing something very horrific. I mean, you see this in terrorist organizations like ISIS, and, you know, they do it in the name of Allah in a lot of cases or whatever the cases. And I'm not saying this is the case, but like I said, if it turns out to be more than one person that would go along with stabbing and killing four college students, there's something very
Starting point is 00:25:57 sinister and messed up behind that whole thing. And like I said, it's interesting that this guy asked, was he the only one arrested? Or was there someone else arrested? And there are reports that there are other people that have been arrested very close by in Pennsylvania that could be connected with this. And only time will tell that we're going to we're going to try to cover the press conference today live. It will be at 4 p.m. For those of us, we are listening way after today, then obviously, you know, you can just go listen to the recorded version. But we're going to try to cover the press conference. We're going to see what we can take from the press conference.
Starting point is 00:26:32 I'm curious to know, you know, what and how much they're going to say about this. You know, I don't know how much information they're going to release. I don't think it'll be a lot. I think the biggest thing is we'll either find out between now and 4 p.m. whether or not there is, you know, we may hear of another arrest before 4 p.m. If we don't hear of another arrest, we may get that information at 4 p.m. But we don't know. But in the meantime, I am going to be sleuthing and watching for more and more details.
Starting point is 00:27:04 And if we do have to come on before the news conference with more and more information, we will for sure do that. Yeah, we will, absolutely. This won't be a very long episode, guys. We did want to just give you all the information that we know as of right now. There's so many different rumors going across the internet right now about this guy. all of these people online have already found every single social media account this guy has. And he doesn't really have a lot. Yeah, but apparently he had quite a few Instagram accounts.
Starting point is 00:27:30 You know, he's had, from what one person said, that he had six different Instagram accounts I saw on Twitter. Now, that could be, if they're just now looking up, it could be other people making accounts for him. Who knows? But I am, what I'm most curious about is if that 4chan or whatever that post is was actually an actual post. Because if it was, that says a lot about possibly what happened, how just brutal and sick he was. And the fact that he wanted it to be known by being anonymous and putting it out there that, you know. And listen, he would have probably used something like Fortune. A lot of people, like especially on the mainstream boards, like the Idaho murder boards on Reddit or any of the Facebook groups or any of that stuff, you know, they all kind of have this rule of thumb to not believe anything from Fortune and not post.
Starting point is 00:28:15 I mean, they're actually Reddit if you post. the 4chan stuff in Reddit, they will ban you. So, you know, this is probably more than likely somewhere that he would like to go if he wanted to say something about what he did. And because it's just extremely hard to get user information from 4chan, because it is a encrypted end-to-end system, unlike Reddit, the FBI, whoever could go to Reddit and say, we need the information on this person, let us get all the IPs and wherever.
Starting point is 00:28:44 You can do that pretty easy on these other social media platforms. But 4chan is not somewhere you can do that so easily. And that's why if this is him, it makes sense. And he would have known that, obviously. It would have just been hard for police to identify or track him on that app. So that's all we know right now. As we know more, we'll obviously let you guys know. The press conference is at 4 p.m. today, Eastern Standard Time, 1 p.m. Pacific time.
Starting point is 00:29:08 Moscow police will be given an update. We don't know how much information they're going to be given. But we'll see. The name of the song is Shivers by Love and Calibber. the reason we played this song is because it is just very, I guess, reminding of the situation. And we did lose four people. It's going to be very hard for these families for the rest of their life to ever get over this. And the sorry bastard, which is potentially, I guess, this guy that did this,
Starting point is 00:29:33 is sad that someone can take away lives so fast for probably no reason. Yeah, so we definitely pray for the families. Kaylee and Madison are having their memorial service this afternoon, supposedly. which is another coincidence, but we'll talk about that later, but we are praying for each and everyone and those family members. Absolutely. Guys, until later, we love you.
Starting point is 00:29:56 Peace off. It hurts just the little, my friends, and we hide beside you. All of the memories I try to raise just, because I see that phase and it's shivered. If just for a minute, I'd fall asleep and not dream above. I hate to admit it
Starting point is 00:31:30 I'm out of ideas I don't know If I'll cope without you Yeah shivers
