Starting point is 00:01:16 Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening. It is Monday, May 6th, 2004. Hope you had a good weekend. As always, we have lots to cover. This is serious talk on everything that affects you, whether it be the markets, the economy, jobs, unemployment, taxes, deficit, spending, scams, shams, corruption, the Fed, you name it, we cover it without any bias, any agenda, any ulterior motive, because we have one
Starting point is 00:01:49 thought process and boy, are they proven it but good. We think they all suck. 35 trillion in debt defines it through the last 25 years. You know who is running the show during those 25 years. They're the ones that souped it up and they don't care. Leading us to this guy left of Bernie Sanders, no kidding. Bernie Sanders is a Republican, a conservative compared to this guy. But we'll maybe wait for later. What we really want to talk about right now, first and foremost, really is the markets because three strong days and it looks like not by accident and has to call into question
Starting point is 00:02:44 is that it now let me be clear about a couple of things and then we'll introduce ourselves volume has been light it has not been very strong volume but Thursday Friday and today price movement very strong and we always tell you about characteristics and we tell you up front we don't know what happens tomorrow but characteristics we love we love when the markets finish strong during on the day and don't ask me why don't care why you just had a Big, big move into the close at 4 o'clock. It's the best way I can put it. The NASDAQ, not making this up, went up, got to make sure I get it right,
Starting point is 00:03:51 50, 60 points in the last 10 minutes after being already up 130. Good stuff. And the most important. And I can't say this any louder, any clearer. The NASDAQ edged above the 50-day moving average on Friday. Wasn't really impressed, though it had a little gap to the upside, but got a little bit more today. And now is in the midst, in the midst of that range that was going on
Starting point is 00:04:29 when the market topped in March 8th and just sat around before tanking on April 15th. The S&P, back above the 50 day at the close today. A little bit ickier versus the NASDAQ, but back above. The NASDAQ 100. Back above today. And let me be clear. And these are the words that you should write down. As long as that stays above, opportunity, and nothing bad can happen overall.
Starting point is 00:05:10 You got that? As long as it stays above the 50-day moving average, opportunity, and nothing bad can happen to the big indices. I did not say we're off to the races. I did not say we're going to get going. It just provides opportunity. Warning shot. Last July, we went through correction. and we rallied back up above the 50 day
Starting point is 00:05:49 for about eight trading days didn't get going just sat around above and then it broke back below the 50 day remember just because you break above does not mean you break back below just because you break below
Starting point is 00:06:07 doesn't mean you don't break back above because we just saw that we broke below on the 15th of April if I got my days right. Yes. And now we're back above on May 6th. A breakback below does not mean the end of the world, but cannot ascend. So very potentially important day.
Starting point is 00:06:41 On top of that, I think we mentioned this to you last week, even though some people don't get it, you had things like Netflix and Facebook gap data. badly on earnings but hold they turned up today two big names important names so the the outlier event that has not happened too often I remember research in motion a long time ago a big gap down on earnings it usually leads to more downside just sits around for a couple of weeks and turns back up that's important and just the overall tone today and the finish real darn good and when we do our scans tonight we're going to find
Starting point is 00:07:29 some much better action and vitiya back above the 50 day last week at a good day today AI stuff the semiconductor today oh by the way the socks though it has come straight up for three days and i mean straight a little bit back above the 50 day again let me repeat we're talking physicality of the markets here. Because we are back above this moving average, it does not mean we're not going to go back below, as we just said what happened last year in that correction. But if we stay above that moving average, only opportunity does not mean we are going to keep going higher, we can just sit around, but only opportunity and nothing bad can happen. A break back below could be another story. And as I stated, I love the finish today.
Starting point is 00:08:31 And even though volume looks like it's coming in light again, three days in a row pretty darn good. And we won't argue that point. And that's the story, which takes us back to Wednesday. Well, what all of a sudden did this? I can tell you I'm going through earnings. they're okay. Nothing special. What's done it is quite simple. On Wednesday, a man that continues to be able to move the needle. Eased monetary policy. Simple as that. They were taking down their printed money by the tune of 60 billion a month. They changed it to 25. billion that's easing monetary policy you don't have to lower interest rates you can do other things and thus that's the story we say this knowing that we don't know what happens tomorrow we say this
Starting point is 00:09:42 knowing hey some things are showing up we say this knowing prices back above and we say this with our eyes wide open and our ears pinned back because this is when, as we say, opportunity. And as we said at the beginning of January, boy, if NVIDIA breaks out and what happened it did, and others followed. And now we'll see if it happens again.
Starting point is 00:10:11 By the way, NVIDIA is not close to breaking out as of yet, but on the whole, really good day to day. and when you add up the three days, dang. Now, I already scanned a thousand names and leadership showing up and we'll adhere. But the most important part of the equation is being above that 50-day average because nothing good happens below. Only potential good can happen above. And this is just a simple roadmap. It is factual.
Starting point is 00:10:47 We always explain to you There are specific roadmaps to bullish and bearish markets Up trends and downtrends and downtrends They follow simplistically Certain rules Of that roadmap In order to go higher One of the things that needed to happen
Starting point is 00:11:09 Happen today And that is the big indices back above the 50 day The NASDAQ did it Friday We would have loved to do it. seen real strength and conviction in the volume, but when you add up three days, that's pretty darn good. Three days getting back a lot of the ick. And I have to tell you, we sold beautifully our S&P that we bought in November. It's almost back to our original sell. Well done market. Up next. Lots more on the market to cover. I'm Gary. This is the one on the only investor's edge.

Starting point is 00:13:00 management. Hello, hello. I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of Smart Talks with IBM. I recently spoke with IBM's new director of research, Jake Mbata. We discussed his vision for the future of quantum computing. At IBM research, what we always do is answer what is the future of computing, whether it's coming up with new algorithms, coming up with better AI, coming up with quantum, or coming up with just how do different accelerators go together. It's our DNA to answer the question. question of what is the future. Isn't it a perfect problem for IBM because you kind of need to have a legacy of building stuff? Yes. Building actual physical machines. Yeah, it's why I came to IBM. I wanted the experience, the culture of building hard things that others have not done before.
Starting point is 00:13:55 Where do you imagine we are in the timeline of this technology? There will come a point when it will mature, right? Yeah. My cell phone is a mature technology at this point. How far are we from that point with quantum? By 2029, we'll build the first fault-tolerant quantum computer. That is one that can run a very, very large, large problem. To learn how IBM is building the future of computing, visit IBM.com slash quantum.

The last bastion of quality programming.
Starting point is 00:16:15 With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. And then, welcome once again to Investors Edge. Hey, let me introduce myself because I'm Gary Caldbaum. This is serious talk, as we said. We cover everything. And if you do not get this radio show in your city, we'll post it at garyk.com. And we'll post it on our Twitter.
Starting point is 00:16:42 feed which is now X and if you don't follow us on X you probably should we're pretty cool on there we've been doing a lot on the war I must admit so if you don't follow us there do that and if you'd like to email us all you got to do is be nice you know why we respect everybody as long as they're just nice every now and then we'll get something but such as life It can't be perfect. But we respect all opinions. You know we get people emailing me. Gary, I think you're wrong on Israel and what they are doing in Gaza.
Starting point is 00:17:23 And they come up with a real good. Why? And they state that there's levels of what you have to do. And you know what I tell them back? I absolutely respect what you have to say. I can't say you're wrong. And the fact that the matter is there have been some innocence, but. and then I give my side.
Starting point is 00:17:43 It's called how many dead? How many still hostages? Where are the terrorists located? But that's besides the thing. We've gone back and forth with people on the colleges. Everybody's agreeing with me on the colleges, though. I have not had one dissent at all. One dissent at all.
Starting point is 00:18:07 Which makes it quite interesting, huh? And the colleges have quieted down some, but there's still a lot of that going on, and they're going to pop up left and right in different places. You know what we think. I can't use the four-letter words to describe these people. And really the bottom line, they don't even know what the hell they're protesting about.
Starting point is 00:18:27 And we're finding out this has been organized big time by some nefarious beings. I've been getting emails on Soros that he's part of it. And we're finding out that's BS. So just be careful. And believe me, there's nothing I like about Soros funding a bunch of DAs. that are destroying cities. But don't believe everything you hear on everybody, and that's both sides of the aisle.
Starting point is 00:18:51 That'll be for a little bit later. Let's get back on the market. So, if price stays above the 50 day, and I wanted a little explanatory, that's a word, right, explanatory, simplistic form, a roadmap. As I've stated, if you want to go from Miami to New York,
Starting point is 00:19:21 in a car, you're going to just go up 95. It's just a simple roadmap of success. If you decide to get off and go on the turnpike through Florida, you're going to go a little bit west and a little bit north and then come around. It's going to cost you some time. So not as strong as going straight up. Of course, notwithstanding traffic, but that's a variable. In the markets, what you need to understand there are certain roadmaps that bull and bear markets follow. I did a webcast from my peeps this weekend showing them bear markets and bull markets and how simplistic it is on how they look on a picture. Price in a bullish uptrend ascends above the ascending 50-day line if it's really strong the 21 day,
Starting point is 00:20:26 but the 50 day and in bearish phases, price descends along a descend under the 50 day moving average. That's it until it changes. And price moves back above or below. And again, the issue is right now, is it going to stick? And may I state for the record, price-wise,
Starting point is 00:20:59 man, it's not a ton, but I can tell you that the S&P is up from the low on Thursday, from the low. 5,011 to 5,180. 3% in three days for the S&P. And has edged above the recent high of 429. The NASDAQ
Starting point is 00:21:28 I would suggest is probably a little bit stronger. 15604 to 16349, 4% plus in three days. And very impressed. And impressed with
Starting point is 00:21:46 some of the big gaps to the downside, just giving the middle finger to the gaps, and turning up. So something's up here. Markets better. price must stick for this big, meaning the big indices. If it sticks good, goes back below, suspect. And now what we do is we find leaders that get the hell out of here to the upside
Starting point is 00:22:13 or start reasserting themselves or doing things, showing their strength. And we go from there. And again, I don't think it's accident. this is off of J. Powell. And I must tell you, I underestimated it. When he did it, the market sank like a stone into the close on Wednesday. And I read what he did and I said, I don't think this can be too big for the market. It has been 3 and 4% in the indices in three days with a good finished 10%.
Starting point is 00:22:59 Today, I ain't going to argue that crap. And back above the 50-day but in range. The NASDAQ is in, you can call now the NASDAQ in a range of, let's call it, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. Today's the 10th week. The S&P 500, yeah, we're going to call it, yeah, 10 weeks. And even the small caps have come on. And I'm just so tired of them because every time it looks like they're going to do better, they sink like a stone.
Starting point is 00:23:35 And every time they sink like a stone and ready for the outhouse, they turn back up and then end up going nowhere. Those are the small camps. Next, there's 12 pages of earnings this week. A lot of the biggies are gone. but as I go through Disney's Tomorrow for example and that's one of the big ones
Starting point is 00:24:03 but there are a lot of ones that I have circled that I'm Lyft I believe Twilio and Reddit and some others and we'll see which ones react best which ones react worse
Starting point is 00:24:17 and we'll take it from there 12 pages I got a deal with less than thrilled. But once we get past earnings, it's much easier life for me. During earnings season, I'm working longer after the close and up earlier before the open because that's when all the earnings come out. Up next, got some news, some things to cover.
Starting point is 00:24:51 I'm Gary. This is the one only investor's edge. Hello, hello. I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of Smart Talk. with IBM. Starting point is 00:25:41 Yes. Building actual physical machines. Yeah, it's why I came to IBM. I wanted the experience, the culture of building hard things that others have not done before. Starting point is 00:27:22 Enjoy savings on top of savings when you shop in-store or online for easy drive-up and go pick up or delivery. Restrictions apply. See website for full terms and conditions. We're listening to. America is talking. Investors Edge.
Starting point is 00:27:39 He's got to be pleased with that. The crowd is just on it. be here. He's a Cinderella boy. With Gary Colbomb. It comes highly recommended. You're going to feel better if you talk to him. And walk once again to Investors Edge. Should I do the news now or do I do it a little bit later? Bond market interest rates were down a little bit today.
Starting point is 00:28:05 Oil bounced a little bit. The dollar was pretty flattish. The gold gapped up in the morning. I sold my gold with some gains. and gold is now a little bit above where I sold, and not sure just yet on that. But again, I just want to repeat the big story is we look for these signposts
Starting point is 00:28:29 that mean everything to us, and now we're going to see, is this baby going to stick? I've already got emails on it. I don't even have a guess. Whatever guess I give you is probably going to be wrong. let's hope it sticks. I want to go higher.
Starting point is 00:28:50 I like bull markets. Bare markets stink. They're a pain in the rear. So very good three days. In the news. Just letting you know, Apple was down almost three today. Finished down a buck 70. Gapped up big on Friday.
Starting point is 00:29:18 Filled some of the gap. was more today, and with the NASDAQ strong today, was down again. I just want to repeat a couple of things on that. Number one, I really do believe that the move on Friday was mostly the buyback. 110 billion. GDP has bought back 625 billion in stock over the past 10 years. Before this 110 billion, that's added. Do you know how much that is?
Starting point is 00:29:54 You know, great big companies on Wall Street are $100 billion. They've bought $100 in size. Big companies. Well, that's the story on Apple. My worry continues to be. And it certainly can be wrong. It's been right for the last while so. They're so big, it's so tough to grow.
Starting point is 00:30:23 that's number one 380 billion in revenues number two and this doesn't take rocket science I have not traded in two phones ago for the new one
Starting point is 00:30:39 and have no interest and I'm the everyday man I'm the everyday man I think there's a lot of that going on and if you remember there was supposed to be this big move into the 5G so everybody is going to do this and that really didn't happen to an extent so it's going to be what are they going to do with the phones that really would say to Gary oh I'm trading it in
Starting point is 00:31:13 and then there's China just businesses down in China that's a big business for them so we'll see we'll watch we pay attention to stocks so they're very good at forecasting of things things are going to be better again or good again and the stock's going to go again it'll show and then there's amgen so amgen gapped up 37 bucks it was up 40 on friday at one time and then by the close it hit the 322 closed at 311 and we simply told you what huh it did not make sense to us how big a move that was, but we do believe in the reality of the market. What they said was is they have an injectable whatever Eli Lilly has in VO. It was down another 12 bucks today. See, number one, it's got to be approved, go through the motions, this, that, and the other thing. And Eli Lilly stock had dropped
Starting point is 00:32:21 pretty decently on that. Eli Lilly back up 31 bucks today. Four percent. It's a high price stock. So got to be careful about everything. I must tell you, I was really contemplating. I don't do for clients, but just doing a short on the stock of Amgen Friday. And I just said, screw it. Look like it would have been the right thing. Sometimes weird things happen on Wall Street. By the way, GameStop had a huge move on Friday.
Starting point is 00:32:52 I didn't even see that until after we were done with the show. The stock went from 12.5. 17 in the day, which steals us. Crap's still going. In case you don't know, and I don't make it up. Gamesop has 70 millionaires short out of 300 in the flow. Short squeeze. I probably shouldn't have told you that.
Starting point is 00:33:19 I don't want you to start looking at GameStop. So a few things going on. I want to bring up Nvidia. Most importantly, got back above 50-day moving average. on Friday, after failing twice, stopped out twice, and finally had a move today. And what's the issue? Volume was 28% less than normal. But price, pretty darn good.
Starting point is 00:33:48 The old high was 974 on the reversal. The high without the reversal was 968. It closed at 921 today. And there was a lot of AI talk today. Hey, in the news, besides the Apple, besides the AMGEN, let's get a little bit more. US looks like they're putting a hold on ammunition shipment to Israel. Joe Biden, the worst foreign policy president of pretty much all time. I can't say all time, but close.
Starting point is 00:34:27 Look at Afghanistan. is not happy if Israel goes into Rafa, which is southern Gaza, where Egypt will not let anybody in and has big walls. You know what I think of Biden on everything anyhow. Warren Buffett. Warren Buffett is just a warning shot. It's going to have $200 billion in cash. He says he's got nothing to buy. the Buffett indicators in the trees.
Starting point is 00:35:05 It's valuation. In case you don't know, Warren Buffett happens to be, I think, the greatest in history, deployer of capital in history, into companies, great companies.
Starting point is 00:35:20 That has been 100% right. But the greatest in history and also very prescient when he builds up tons of cash. we'll see what happens this time. Remember, he buys companies and buys stocks. He bought a ton of Occidental Petroleum as of recent. By the way, I remember 2016 where he first bought Apple.
Starting point is 00:35:45 He bought it in the bare market for Apple, and people were laughing at him. I should have just bought the crap load out of it. A few times up by then at this point. Anyway, so Buffett says, I don't mind all the cash at current conditions building the cash positions. When I look at what's available in equity markets and the composition of what's going on in the world, we find it quite attractive, meaning the cash. You know what we say to you on that? Put it in your file manager.
Starting point is 00:36:21 Could be important. We'll keep paying attention to the market, nothing more, nothing less. Did you know that F1 was in Miami this weekend? We're not making this up. We wish we were. but we're not they were charging $280 for main lobster rolls
Starting point is 00:36:42 yellow fun tuna pokey $170 chilled prawns $290 a fruit refresher $190 an empanata 120 steam buns $220 the steam buns
Starting point is 00:36:57 f1 platter 290 crispy wingboard 190 nachos 180 bucks there better have been a lot of them. In case you don't know, when you get Donald service in Vegas at clubs, you can get prices like that, but you get a bunch.
Starting point is 00:37:19 I'm just letting you know at F1. They were giving you the FU. Unbelievable. That's all I can tell you when I see things like that. Hey, I'm going to take a pass on that one. What else did you got for you? National Fashion Chain to shut all 450 540 stores. Everybody here in Rue 21?
Starting point is 00:37:47 A fashion chain for teens in malls? They're shutting down. 540. Just another one going by the wayside. Up next. Got some more. I'm Gary. This is the one only investor's edge. Hello.

Starting point is 00:41:42 In the guest's edge. with Gary Culper. And welcome once again to Investor's Edge. By the way, in 2003, they're saying 5,500 shops have closed. Bed Bath and Beyond, Nike, Walmart, all. Anyway, just letting you know, Route 21. Huh. In the news, when you have a chance, go on,
Starting point is 00:42:25 my Twitter feed and go look at Mark Zuckerberg's yacht. Now, we don't mind him having a big yacht. And by the way, it's gargantuan. We don't mind it. What do we mind? It's simple as we tell you. Rules for us, but not for them. We loathe anyone who tell us what we have to do with our lives and our carbon footprint. The John Kerry's of the world who says, well, I'm working for the people and I buy carbon credits. Go screw Potsie as he gets on his private jet to go to his yacht that he married into. Anyway, Zuckerberg, God bless him, great yacht.
Starting point is 00:43:25 He's one of them. Hey, you all got to, you know, watch your carbon. I would suggest a three miles of his yacht and what that uses in carbon. It's probably 20 years of us in our car. Just letting you know. In the news, interesting. Well, we told you so. Prices at California Chipotle, McDonald's, and other fast food chains are rising now following the minimum wage hike.
Starting point is 00:44:00 they all say we had no choice. Chipotle said an investor call Wednesday that 500 California restaurants climbed 6 to 7% during the first week of April compared to last year. And the quote from the CEO is, the state isn't making it easy. Again, the people running California are schmucks. They have no idea what drives the economy. They have complete disrespect for the owners, the entrepreneurs, and by the way, the workers. You see, the workers think, oh, well, guess what, we're going to get paid $20 now, but the companies now have to lower the amount of hours.
Starting point is 00:44:45 Oh, I was making 16, but now 20. Oh, I'm now working five hours less. How did that work out? And of course, all these companies are now announcing the faster track on kiosks. And we're seeing pictures inside these fast food restaurants of only kiosks except there's line cooks. And in case you don't know, Gavin Newsom gave exemptions to certain types. of outlets that gave them big donations. It doesn't matter which chick-fil-let.
Starting point is 00:45:34 By the way, the price of a spicy chicken sandwich at the Chick-fil-A has gone from 709 up to 709 from 629 since mid-February. Just, you know, it's only pennies. What does Gavin Newson give a crap? Just remember, people like Sanders, they've never been in the business world before. They don't know what drives it.
Starting point is 00:45:56 They don't understand the risk capital, the time, the sweat, the failure, the success. And they don't care. What they're trying to do and they think they're doing is buying votes. And unfortunately, they are in the news, just a headline. Minnesota bankruptcy law firm files for bankruptcy after losing fight with another bankruptcy firm. Just letting you know. I thought that was a pretty funny headline. in the news, and this is what we're talking about,
Starting point is 00:46:36 and we'll segue a little bit, Jamal Bowman, this is one of the representatives in the house that hates Israel, hates Jews, he's an anti-Semitic racist, just did a major fundraiser with a Muslim leader who praised Hamas, October 7th massacre in Israel, and was even condemned. by the White House. It's just
Starting point is 00:47:05 sickening to watch. Imagine standing next to somebody at a fundraiser for your campaign on somebody who praised the murder, the kidnapping, the raping, the blowing up,
Starting point is 00:47:23 the destroying, the putting the babies in ovens, and then videoing it and sending it to the families while laughing. And interesting, I haven't seen it on the news. I only saw it because people on X slash Twitter cover this crap, unfortunately, and it shows up a lot. Just letting you know.
Starting point is 00:47:54 And last, you ever hear the company Hymns? It's a company that sells generic sex drugs. So the CEO post stupid on what's going on with Israel and Palestine and all that. His stock dropped 8% on that. He praised the protesters. He rolled it all back. Interesting. The CEO, stupid, rolls it all back after 8%.
Starting point is 00:48:27 8% drop. Isn't amazing how money moves, scruples, and conscience? Anyway, the company's hymns, and I don't know much about it, just letting you know. There's just a lot of weird crap going on. But the good news is, above the 50-day. Lastly, California were picking on them. In case you don't know, they're in the midst of a high-speed rail, and they were plotting themselves because 11,000, billion dollar project they got sixteen hundred feet of it done so far and they were praising it it took 10 years uh there's a picture go check it out on the new york post i'm putting it up on twitter imagine what 11 billion dollars would have been for the done for the homeless in california versus 1600 feet i don't know how the stoplights work you have a great evening drive carefully
Starting point is 00:49:23 when you get home to like we do quite simple make sure you hug your family make sure You hug your children. They will feel better. You will feel better. I promise. Have a great day, everybody. Have a great evening. Same time tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:49:33 TV tomorrow. Not sure yet. But we will be back with radio. Peace out all. Serenity now. Bye, bye. This has been Investors Edge with Gary Coltbaum on BizTalk. To listen to past episodes or to get in contact with Gary, go to GaryK.com.
