Investor's Edge with Gary Coltbaum.
Straight talk about you and your money.
Now from the BizTalk Studios, here is Gary Cultbaum.
And welcome once again to Investors Edge.
I'm Gary Colbom.
I'm your host.
A thanks for being with us today.
Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening.
It's the 27th of January, 2024.
Hope you're having a good day.
In case you don't know, there's a serious talk on everything that affects you,
the markets, the economy, your job, your industry.
Washington, D.C., the new administration, the new policies, the old policies, anything that comes to mind without any agenda, ulterior motive, or bias.
We are not R and we are not D.
We are P.
People.
We the people.
And hopefully, the new people in D.C.
Recognize that.
It would be nice.
Hey, if you do not get this radio show in your city, we'll post it at garyk.com.
We'll also post it on our Twitter feed, which is now X.
And if you don't follow us on X, you should.
And if you like to email us, just be nice, because we'll be nice back unless you like Hamas.
Then we have a problem with you.
Ladies and gentlemen, I just want to start out by saying today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Do you know why I bring it up?
Because I'm stunned to see what's still out there.
Not only in this country, but in other countries, the good news is it is a minority of people.
but there's enough to bring it up.
There's enough to bring it up.
I've been to Terazen.
I've been to Auschwitz.
Auschwitz changed my life.
If you've ever gone there, you know what I mean.
And you can actually go online and do a guide.
That'll change you.
That'll change you.
I'll never forget.
But we have to segue, as we always do.
We have to move on.
And ladies and gentlemen,
I'm going to tell you what the Dow did today first.
First.
And then I'm going to tell you a very important area of the market crumbled today.
And then I'm going to tell you why it crumbled today.
And then I'm going to tell you I have no clue exactly what happens tomorrow.
Or what happens tomorrow.
Simple as that.
The Dow is up 289 today.
the Dow is price-weighted with 30 stocks.
When the market gets a little iffy and a little icky, money usually flows into the Dow
because we're talking about the most liquid names in the market.
Not necessarily dependable, but the most liquid names and, of course, some of the most
defensive names.
Interesting enough, while the Dow was up 289, the S&P was down 89.
and that took the last few minutes to get it to 89.
In fact, the S&P at around 354 with six minutes to go,
I think it was down about 105, maybe 110.
The Dow with six minutes to go,
was only up about 150.
Money flowed today into home builders
because interest rates plunge today.
Money flowed into consumer staples.
That's a change.
Money flowed into insurance stocks.
Interesting.
Money flowed into defense stocks.
Money flowed into defense stocks.
Money flowed into,
medicals, that's a change.
Money flowed into auto dealers today.
And money flowed into a bunch of Dow names.
But as I stated, the S&P was down 89.
The NASDAQ was down 612 points today.
And may I state for the record,
was down about 740 at one time.
What the hell happened to the NASDAQ today?
Okay.
Imagine if you make a product
and imagine if there is strong demand for that product,
whatever it may be.
And imagine if somebody comes around that,
can make that product for a lot cheaper.
What typically happens?
Well, typically, you're going to have to meet that person's price.
And if you have to meet that person's price, that cuts into your profits.
And if you are a high-price stock, dependent on massive growth and all of a sudden you don't have it,
your stock price can be penalized.
But what else?
What if the belief was there such strong demand?
The products you sell, you have to go to people to make those products.
And because the products were so, they ordered the hell out of it.
And what happens at the point in time where it's recognized that they ordered too much?
they're going to stop ordering.
If they stop ordering, what happens?
You have less sales.
And if you have less sales and you are an expensive stock
and a growth stock in the market that growth mutual funds
buy because you are growing your earnings and sales in a very big way
and all of a sudden that change is you can take a haircut.
And what if there was such strong demand that other companies had plans to get on top of it also and build plants and hire people and commit billions of dollars?
And then all of a sudden, that other company comes in.
Wait a minute. Hold on a second here.
What happens?
So let me tell you what happened today.
And up front, let me state, I have no clue what happens tomorrow.
Not a clue.
I do know Wall Street, though.
You will get people defending left and right.
You'll have companies coming out left and right.
We'll pay attention to stock price and let the market dictate.
So before I move on and tell you where and what, the good news today was that the 10-year yield, which has been so important, plunged again today almost the stick to 4.528.
It hit a high of 4.8 about 8 days ago.
If that's the high and it keeps coming down, that should be good news for areas of the market.
and as I stated, you had a very good day in Dow types,
home builders,
transports,
and other sundry areas,
and Dow names.
What's the Dow name that has probably the better leverage
on lower interest rates?
Home Depot.
What did it do today?
Up 10 and a half today.
What is that?
About 70 Dow points.
Even though they're,
earnings are down over the last four quarters and their revenues are about flat. That's how important
interest rates are. 70 Dow points. I didn't see any news on why insurance stocks had a better day.
I'm going to have to look up whether they said that the California fires may have not,
aren't going to be a quarter, $250 billion, maybe less, and they'll be better. All I know is
insurance stocks had a good day.
I can
maybe think why the consumer
staples had a good day.
Defensive
we'll see.
So,
let me start out with
Nvidia.
Dropped $24
today.
And drop
below, at the close
today, five
month support
and back into the lower range going back from June
to about mid-October.
Volume was 790 million,
average volume 214 million.
That is the head honcho,
top dog big cheese story today
of what happened with the NASDAQ
will expound up next
on this the one only investors edge.

IBM's new director of research, Jake Mbata. We discussed his vision for the future of quantum
computing. At IBM research, what we always do is answer what is the future of computing,
whether it's coming up with new algorithms, coming up with better AI, coming up with quantum,
or coming up with just how do different accelerators go together. It's our DNA to answer the
question of what is the future. Isn't it a perfect problem for IBM because you kind of need to have a
legacy of building stuff? Yes.
Building actual physical machines. Yeah, it's why I came to IBM. I wanted the experience,
the culture of building hard things that others have not done before.
Where do you imagine we are in the timeline of this technology? There will come a point
when it will mature, right?
My cell phone is a mature technology at this point.
How far are we from that point with quantum?
By 2029, we'll build the first fault-tolerant quantum computer.
That is one that can run a very, very large, large problem.

And they blew away Washington.
I should have told you.
told you, I am sorry. I liked the Buffalo. I would have lost that. I like the over in both games,
would have won that for you. But I would have given out the Eagles for you. Okay. So,
NVIDIA, down 24 today. At the lows today was down about 2570. It's up a buck in the
aftermarket. Here's the story. As best as I know it,
And may I state for the record, I am not the technology genius of geniuses, but I have a good, pretty good background and able to explain this.
China has what is known as an open source AI, artificial intelligence.
China called DeepSeek.
Now let me say DeepSeek was announced,
a couple of weeks ago.
But it really didn't hit home.
It was then, it came out that they are able to do what all these others are trying to do at ridiculously low cost AI.
and in no need of all these data centers or the amount of data centers.
And remember, last week, Meta, Facebook announced they're going to spend $50 to $60 billion
on a data center bigger than Manhattan.
Huh?
Well, interesting, while the NASDAQ was crushed today, meta was up today, and why?
because all of a sudden they may not have to spend $50 to $60 billion on data centers.
And if you can get the AI, by the way, this Deepseek is now the number one on the app store,
surpassing chatGBT.
The thought process, there's no invidious things you need.
and all these what they call expensive chips.
They did it with cheap chips.
Now the other side says, well, maybe China's lying.
Who the hell knows?
China lies about their GDP all the time.
That said, and Viti was crushed to the tune of 24.
It's down right now total with aftermarket about 22.5.
And that's our gargantuan drop.
We're talking about
17%
600 billion
and market cap
technically
Nvidia at the close today
finished below
the 200-day moving average
that's the long term
and he had very strong support
around this 126-128 area
and right now it's 119.89.
and if that happens to invidia and there's a worry about who needs chips the semiconductor index today closed
down 488 points i'm not making that up and at one time today 4785 1568 was down about 550 but 488 this is for the
Index down 9.15%.
So what happens if Nvidia gets clipped?
Well, for 17%.
You got Broadcom.
Another AI down 19%.
Broadcom.
Though,
I got it up two bucks in the aftermarket.
We'll take that.
And I take that back.
Broadcom down $42 on the day.
Huge.
What else?
Marvell has been strong.
Down 19%, down 23 to $100 today.
May I state again?
Holy crap.
And KLA Tencore, the chipmaker, down $47 or 6%.
That's a nice.
one. Amat down 6%. Lamb Research down 5%. AsML, down 5%. Other AI-related, Taiwan semi, down 13%. That cracks the 50-day.
By the way, volume, very heavy. Micron, not necessarily AI, but down 12%. It was a roughed-up day.
Arm holdings, which had that big move off the Oracle, down 10% today.
or $16.
Let me say again,
holy crap.
We're talking about some serious moves
and some serious breaks
in semiconductor land.
I don't know if you ever heard of
On Techno, onto innovation,
O-N-T-O.
That was down $30 to 183,
another equipment maker.
And the thought process is,
what if we don't need that much?
Monolithic power,
down 70s.
$7 to $600 to $600, 11%.
I can do others, but you get the point.
We're talking about a bludgeoning in the semiconductor stocks today.
Now, as I repeated, tomorrow's another day.
And in case you don't know, we don't just look at dailies, we look at weeklies.
So if you start off on a bad week, but you finish flat on the week, that's a defensive
week. If you start real strong on a week and you finish down, that's not a good week.
So we'll see how the rest of the week goes and guess what? Oh, we got a bazillion earnings
reports including a bunch of big ones. I think we got Mr. Bubble on Wednesday, Jay Powell also.
So we're open to anything happening and things getting better. But that's just the semiconductors.
there are other things that have been involved besides the semiconductor stocks
when it comes to this whole artificial intelligence
there's been these data centers that you're hearing about
that they have to explode going forward how much we're going to need
there's how much power we're going to need nuclear
well those no-sales nuclear stocks got trashed today of course
but also the building of these data centers.
And you've had a good move in those.
Wait to you hear what happened next.
To them, this is the one only investor's edge.

He's got to be pleased with that.
The crowd is just on his feet here.
He's a Cinderella boy.
With Gary Colbomb.
It comes highly recommended.
You're going to feel better if you talk to him.
So, this is one of those days.
days where we're always asked why you always talk dollar moves, why don't you talk percentage
moves?
Well, the percentage moves were so stunning today.
We're going to do a little bit of that today to give you an idea of some of the moves
today and where.
Are you ready?
NBIS, infrastructure for AI builders, down 37% today.
Credo Tech.
Down 31% today.
Solaris Energy speaks for itself.
Down 30% today.
A stock that has been held by a ton of the growth people.
Virtive Holdings, VRT, data centers, infrastructure 4.
30% drop today.
30.
30.
And by the way, on the ground.
gap for most of these. And I gather they'll bounce them here, but I don't know how much.
How about core scientific AI hosting? 29%. Here we go. Vistra VST, power generation, 28%.
This was a new yearly high in the last two days, down $53 to 137 and change.
Celestica, contract manufacturers, we're finding out was part of this, down 28% today.
By the way, all these had huge volume.
Astero Labs, another semiconductor, down 28%.
How about Hallador Energy?
28%.
Highmax semiconductor, 28%.
Applied digital, 28%.
Data center.
New scale power, a no-sales nuclear, 28%.
Modin manufacturing, building industrial refrigeration, 26%.
You catch of my drift?
Can I bore you a little more if you don't mind?
Thank you.
Power solutions, speak for itself, 26%.
How about comfort systems, heating and ventilation for commercial and all that use?
26%
Get this
Down $140
to $404
with a lot of it
on the gap
Nanonuclear
26%
No sales
Sea Time
Semis
25%
Bloom Energy
Power generation
25%
IES
Holdings, commercial industrial building, 25%.
Sterling infrastructure, building construction, 24%.
You catching me?
Lightbridge, another nuclear, no sales, 24%.
I'm going to stop at 20, that's how many there are.
How about Lumentem Holdings?
22%.
the hardware, the data centers, 22%, and cloud software.
Fabernet, contract manufacturer, 22%, Semtech, as I mentioned, 22%.
GEVernover, one of the stronger ones, down $90 to $330, 215%.
Sienna, 21%.
How about atomera, symbol ATOMM, 21%, no sales.
Constellation Energy, 21%, down $72 to $275.
Transaltta electric power, 21%.
Primoros heavy construction, 20%.
Applied optoelectronics speaks for itself, 20%.
Energy Services of America speaks for itself 20%.
Look how many I've done.
20%.
And I'm just going to stop right there
so it's not drive you up a wall.
But I can tell you
I'm going through how many
are down 10% or more today?
There's got to be 300 stocks.
300 stocks.
All AI, mostly AI based.
M-Corps building maintenance
down $101 to $4.30.
I'm even stunned.
Eaton a stodgy electric power stock, $57 to 311.
I'll stop it there.
If I had a guess, and it's just that,
they are going to be coming out with blazing guns tonight,
defending everything.
In one way, shape, or form, I don't know.
but it'll be a big defense.
We'll get some kind of bounce.
But as a technician,
there was a lot of chart breaks today on the dailies.
We have four more days for the weeklies.
And it does rate a big wow.
Fundamentally, potentially,
I'm going to use the word potentially,
changes the playing field.
I'm not 100%.
I'm not even 90, 80 or 70%.
But I am a believer in price action
and we're going to be watching it very, very closely.
By the way, did I mention Oracle?
I don't think I did.
Oracle, which had that big move off of Trump
and the guy from SoftBank,
an Oracle CEO that end all beyond,
he's going to spend,
the what, 600 billion?
Oracle gave the whole move back and more today.
Down 25 bucks.
Was down 28 to 158?
Why?
There may not be a need to be spending all that.
They may not.
I think at the very least,
I think my guess at the very least,
there's going to be a deep dive about less.
when it comes to all this AI talk.
That's my guess.
But I don't know how much.
And I don't know what tomorrow brings.
I really wish I did.
The best guess would be some sort of bounce.
How to play it?
Don't know.
Was I thinking of playing, you know, how they say, oh, it's down so much.
You should buy some.
I wasn't even thinking about it.
today. I was just happy that I wasn't in them. And tomorrow's another day. My screen is not
beat red because as I said, the Dow was up 289 and money found other places today. And pretty
decently, we'll go over the Dow names. Why was Apple up 750 today when that's been a weak
stock. Why would Apple go up
750 when everything else
is getting blasted?
And Apple was weak?
I'll answer that.
And then we'll take it from there.
And yeah, we'll make sure we give a Super Bowl
pick. I really
love Philadelphia.
Washington beat Detroit.
That had no defense.
They beat Philly the last
time when the quarterback didn't
play. They're a good team,
but I thought Philly with
Sequin, and I'm so sick he's not on the Giants anymore.
Combined with Hertz.
And I got to hand it to Kansas City.
And the refs.
The refs gave him three big calls that changed the playing field.
They still won the game.
And you got to hand it to them because it ain't easy.
It ain't easy to get to that point.
But man, oh man, the refs.
And they have video and replay.
And they still missed big calls.
One of them led to a KC touchdown.
Notice how we segue from stocks to football.
We do that here.
So up next, where did the money flow today?
And will that continue?
This is the one only investors' edge.

With Gary Cod.
Okay, first off, we didn't do a Trump moment today, but we're going to do one now.
And I can give it short shrift today because it was so good.
President Trump sent airplanes with criminals, illegals, back to Columbia, and Columbia would not accept them.
And Trump said, you don't want to accept them?
Well, this is what we're doing.
This, that, this, that, this, that, this, that.
Guess what Columbia did?
The president did.
Well, he shot some, not necessarily four-letter words back, but he was pissed off.
But guess what they did?
Sometimes when you are the president of an economy that's 30 trillion and probably
Columbia's not even a trillion, you get movement.
Well done President Trump on that.
I also want to bring one other thing up.
I've got a video of Barack Obama looking into the camera and saying, if you are illegal here and criminal, we are deporting you.
Why is that bad now?
It's because the media sucks and the people in the tank suck.
Just remember that.
the number one job of the president, a governor, a mayor, is to defend and protect the citizens.
Getting rid of criminals that are illegal is the move.
And be careful when you see, what's her name, what's her name?
Selina Gomez, do you know who she is?
I think she was once at Disney and I think she's got a big business now.
I heard maybe she's a billion.
She's on one of these social media's crying her brains out about people being deported.
Really?
She may have to look at Obama and what he said.
By the way, go back all the way to Clinton when he was president.
Go back all the way to Clinton when he was president.
Tomorrow morning, Boeing, GM, Royal Caribbean, SAP, and PACAR.
Tomorrow after the close, ASML Holdings, Brinker International Corning,
Flextronics T-Mobile UBS.
No, my bad.
That's Wednesday.
After the close tomorrow,
Starbucks,
Stryker, F5 Networks,
Chub,
and the insurance stocks had a good day today.
And that's about it after the close tomorrow.
Okay.
Where did the money flow today?
As I said,
big drop,
this is good news
in spite of what I just told you.
And by the way, other economically sensitive names were smoked.
One of my favorites, PWR,
Quantum Services, down 65 bucks to 292, down 18%.
Wow.
That's how much AI meant to these things, and I didn't even know that.
So money flowed today, number one.
As I mentioned, meta, some software names.
Why would software do well?
well, if this is the case and the costs are going to be lower, you have lower licensing costs,
reduce training and computing costs, the cost of trained models and the associated data center expenses will decrease.
It will make AI more accessible to software companies.
I think that's the story there.
So Salesforce.com and the Dow today was up $13.
That's about 84 Dow points.
So that happened today.
Why would Apple be up?
because I think Apple's been down because AI was going up.
And now AI's going down.
Apple went up today.
Though I'm still worried about Apple because the valuation is not very good.
And of course, we'll have earnings this week on that.
So Apple was up today.
And I said there was some software names.
HUBS was up 31 bucks.
And then money flew today.
If you look at the XLP, that's consumer staples,
looks like it may have put in the bottom in here.
Remember, there's not really great power in them,
but very good day for the food and beverage things,
which have been just dead money.
Dead, dead money.
Very good day money flowed in there.
Home builders, money flowed into there today, lower rates.
Simple as that.
And maybe a higher low in the home builders for a change.
The transports, very good day.
today. Very good day today in spite. You had good reaction to earnings in Union Pacific. The other day, the minus 1% sales growth did it. Gee gosh, that was sarcasm. But you're getting some money flows finally into some of those names. So good day for the transports. As I said, medicals. Why would medicals do better? AI. What do you mean? Well, if all the calls,
There's so much less for AI, and we're being told by Larry Ellison himself how AI is going to be great for medicals.
Maybe one plus one equals two there.
So all those areas, the drugs, even the managed care, United Health was up 11 today, that's 70 Dow points.
The medical products and services had a good day today.
biotech not so great
and I even saw
I don't know why the hospitals
would have a strong day
but they had a strong day
insurance I'm going to have to look up why
because you would think
insurance stocks
would be dead money
but they had a good day today
but they've been down a bunch
so maybe that it's part of that
that's where the money flow
today
tomorrow beats the hell out of me
by the way
Berkshire Hathaway had a good day today.
That's Warren Buffet.
So a big moving around of jello on the plate, I wish I can tell you what happens tomorrow.
I don't have a clue.
Today was, I know people that were neck deep in these areas that all gap down today.
and I am feeling for them.
These stocks were leading.
Some at or near highs
and they just gaped them 20 and 30.
Tomorrow is another day.
All right, ladies and gentlemen, you have a great evening.
Drive carefully.
When you get home, do like we do.
Make sure you hug your family.
Make sure you hug your children.
They will feel better.
You will feel better.
Winston was listening to the show the whole time
and didn't make a peep. Until tomorrow, have a great one all. Hopefully a better day tomorrow
for the growth. That was just fine. Peace out all. Good night. This has been Investors Edge with
