Starting point is 00:00:31 Investor's Edge with Gary Coltbaum. Straight talk about you and your money. Now from the BizTalk Studios, here is Gary Cultbaum. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. I'm Gary Coltbaum, your host. A thanks for being with us today. Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen. Happy that you are listening.
Starting point is 00:00:48 It's Thursday, January 16th, 2024. And in case you don't know, this is serious talk on everything that affects you. We do not screw around. We talk about everything that affects you. We will do the economy, your job, your industry, the markets, the Morlocks in D.C., the new administration, the old administration. We do it without any bias agenda, ulterior motive, ever. And we know that when we get hate mail and love mail from each side. It's quite the amazing.
Starting point is 00:01:20 And if you do not get this radio show in your city, we'll post it at garyk.com. We'll also post on our Twitter feed, which is now X. And if you don't follow us on X, you should. and if you'd like to email me, all you've got to do is be nice because we're always going to be nice back unless you praise Hamas. And speaking of that, the deal is not done yet. The deal was done, they're not done,
Starting point is 00:01:44 but they're saying they're signing it tomorrow, we'll see. Beats the hell out of me. Anyway, I patted myself on the back yesterday, but the deal is not done yet. Hey, ladies and gentlemen, if I was the president in the United States and I was on my way out, this is what I would say. It has been an honor of a lifetime to be working out of the White House and hopefully we have done the right thing for you. Tell your sons and tell your daughters to work hard, study, educate themselves, stay in shape,
Starting point is 00:02:32 become great at things. The old line be excellent at one thing. If you want, try to. Always do the right thing. And I wish each and every one of you well. That's how I would end the speech. The middle of the speech would be something to the effect of what we think we accomplished. that would be the speech as I left the White House.
Starting point is 00:03:08 No, we have to bring this up because we have been one of the biggest critics of this administration that's out the door. What did Joe Biden do last night in his speech? Well, he lied. We created 17 million jobs, no. about 10 of it was coming back from COVID. They've been lying about that the whole time. He praised himself for his foreign policy. Oh, well, that Afghanistan thing went really well.
Starting point is 00:03:42 How's the women of Afghanistan doing right now that are back in the dark ages? But they all lie, right? What pissed me off is he ended the speech whining, complaining about, I'm just going to use his words, extreme power and influence, warning us of about extreme power and influence, abuse of power, and dark money. And I was just thinking to myself, because I didn't watch it live, I watched it later.
Starting point is 00:04:22 He was describing his four years. Dark money, abuse of power, and extreme power and influence. Joe Biden Perfect A man And in four years Increased the size of government
Starting point is 00:04:44 Depending on which abacus you use 40 to 50% Not about making it up Increase the size of government 40% Let's go for low end 40%. That's abuse of power He took
Starting point is 00:05:02 150 billion of tax dollars and gave it away to others who had contracts on loans. Abuse of power. I can go on. Have we ever got an accounting of all the money that our money, just so you know, our money that has gone to Ukraine? We're not taking a position on whether he should have not, but have we got an accounting. have we gotten accounting he gave $350 billion of our dollars to John Podesta a lifelong Democrat hack
Starting point is 00:05:44 for quote unquote climate abuse of power and he complained about dark money he just gave the medal of something to George Soros who's the king of dark money handing over millions and millions to localities for progressive DAs that have killed those localities because of how crime-ridden they got.
Starting point is 00:06:22 Nothing personal. I've never met them. Don't know them. Joe Biden stunk as an inspirer, as a steward of our hard-earned tax dollars, and everything else under the sun. I could not show that speech. If my sons were 16 or 17 right now, I wouldn't show them the speech, ever.
Starting point is 00:07:05 I would have no interest in showing them that speech. What a shame. As he walks out the door, we are monthly right now, we are running $300 billion deficit, abuse of power. and now we hand it off to Donald Trump. Monday is the, I think it's Monday, correct, the inauguration. I believe that is also Martin Luther King Day, isn't it? Yeah, we are off on Monday.
Starting point is 00:07:43 Schedule tomorrow, I am traveling. Adam will be doing the show tomorrow. Adam Sarhan, we always thank him. Monday will be the best of Gary. I will be back on Tuesday. and I must tell you we hate to start this way. We take no joy in it. I would have loved to come on here and said,
Starting point is 00:08:06 boy, as Joe Biden walked out the door, what an inspiring speech. Wow. I can take that quote and put it up on my wall. Like I have a quote on my wall, addicted to greatness. It's a quote that's on my wall. I have another quote. Time is the one thing we cannot get back. It's also the thing we waste the most of. We give it to the wrong people. We dedicate it to the wrong problems and we damn sure don't give enough to ourselves. Stop wasting time. Stay hard.
Starting point is 00:08:46 I have that quote. I have Stanley Drunken Miller's quote. I like putting all my eggs in one basket and I'm watching the basket very carefully. That's my... Whatever. And I also have the Reagan quote on my wall. About the Democrats and taxes. If it moves tax it, if it keeps moving regulated, and if it stops moving, subsidize it. Boy, that sounds like Kamala Harris.
Starting point is 00:09:13 I can't take one sentence out of Biden's goodbye speech last night and post it up on my wall. And I would have loved to. and he walks out the door, putting us trillions more in debt. That's number one. And number two, the trajectory of that debt. I don't know how they're going to slow that blob down, ladies and gentlemen. We'll see what, hey, listen, Trump's got four years. I watched a little of Mr. Besant, who will be the next Treasury secretary.
Starting point is 00:09:57 He's the opposite of Janet Yellen, who was. quoted as saying, tax cuts are the problem. That's like the sickest thing a Treasury Secretary can say. People keeping more of their money is the problem. Kiss mine. And we'll see where it goes. He sounds like very pro-growth, pro-people, low-tax, less regulation, less interference, and just plain old pro-business.
Starting point is 00:10:25 again, they have the opportunity and we will be here every day and we will let you know and if they'd done good, you will hear it from me if they done not so good you will hear it from me. I am in hopes, what they do. Low taxes, less regulations get the hell out of the way. A, B and C. Low taxes, less regulations get the hell out of the way
Starting point is 00:10:51 and we'll do fine. I don't think most presidents on the way. understand that. Up next, the market wrap. Weird day. I'll explain. This is the one only Investor's Edge. By 2029, we'll build the first fault-tolerant quantum computer. That is one that can run a very, very large problem. To learn how IBM is building the future of computing, visit IBM.com slash quantum. Starting point is 00:15:36 You're listening to. Hey, this promises to be fun. Investors Edge. The last bastion of quality programming. With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. All right. In no particular order, Apple.
Starting point is 00:16:03 was down $9.70 today, only 4%, but for an Apple, that is huge. You know many shares outstanding Apple has? A 15 billion. So that's almost 150 billion of market cap down.
Starting point is 00:16:22 On top of that, you know, we had a good day yesterday. It led the NASDAQ down today. As you know, I think Apple's a big part of the NASDAQ and NASDAQ 100. And we'll get to that in a second. Just to give you an idea how I think, I have been thinking, I think I've mentioned it on more than one occasion to you that I thought the valuation for Apple was ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:16:49 Based on what? Well, for years, when they had much stronger growth, the stock would trade 15, 16, 17 times earnings. And I always ask, wait a minute, they're growing 30, 40, 50, why is so low? earnings and I always told that eventually they'll hit the wall they have only a certain amount of product whatever what have you but recently Apple uh it's price earnings multiple instead of 15 16 17 well let's see a three four 50 550 about 680 uh trading it around 37 times earnings and their growth is not even close to what they used to be but I still bought it
Starting point is 00:17:33 in June, right on the breakout and made like 10% before you can say boo, and got out pretty good. That's before Japan hit. And I just bought it again on the breakout, and I handled it poorly. I didn't lose any money, but I think I watched it go from 238 on the breakout to 260, and I let it do a lot of the round trip. Didn't hurt me, didn't help me. But the stock is really under a lot of pressure now. and you hear all these rumors about this, that,
Starting point is 00:18:07 and you also wonder they report earnings in two weeks. Is anything leaked? What's going on? So we're just letting you, the stock is acting awful right now versus the market. We're not telling you what to do. We're not telling this short cover, buy, sell. But man, oh man, with the aftermarket down $10 today, Apple. And I didn't see any news.
Starting point is 00:18:28 There was one person saying that Apple, the iPhone's not selling too well in China, that it's behind. But I've heard that for a few years, and then it kind of sort of doesn't come to fruition. So we're just letting you know, we're not in it. The good news is I think we sold it around 243, and it's under 228 now. and man, that was not Aunt Mary and Uncle Bob selling it today. So I'm just letting you know. Just letting you know.
Starting point is 00:19:08 And what that did, which was interesting today also, Netflix got upgraded today. Hit a high of 869. It was up 20 some odd bucks. Closed at $842 down $6. I'm putting the pieces. the puzzle together for you. Tesla, the news came, and by the way, Tesla's just been trading up crazy, and anything I tell you probably do the opposite tomorrow, but it's being reported that
Starting point is 00:19:42 they're given discounts on that cyber truck. And normally, any company gives discounts if they don't think things are selling well. Even though I got news for you, there's a cyber truck in my neighborhood. And I've seen a bunch of, by the way, there's a lucid in my neighborhood. And that's a cool looking car. Stock hasn't done too well. So there's Tesla down 16. These are all the big names. Nvidia can't get out of its own way and finish down 260 today. And it's trading below the 50-day moving average and do not break 128 to 130. Just another big name. And Google down three bucks today, that still looks okay. Amazon down three bucks
Starting point is 00:20:27 today, still looks okay. You catch in my drift, though? And the reason why I mention this because the NASDAQ 100, the NASDAQ, a huge portion of
Starting point is 00:20:42 them, those indices are these big names. And today, the NASDAQ finished down 172 and the NASDAQ stack 100, 146, even though advanced declines today were flat. Normally, I'm coming on the show and telling you, advanced declines 2 to 1 negative or even worse.
Starting point is 00:21:05 So just letting you know the attack of the big guns today. And in particular, I got to bring up Netflix, and that's not the biggest of them, but you never want to see an upgrade on a Netflix. I think it was up $22 and finished down six. And maybe I'm micromanaging a little bit. Yeah, it was up $21 finished down six. We'll see what Tamar brings.
Starting point is 00:21:33 But that was the story that stuck out for me today. Those select few biggies that have done so well for the indices, didn't do so well for the indices today, at least the NASDAQ and the NASDAQ 100. And I was just saying, wow. And as I've said to you, and I haven't updated in a few days, but 10 stocks are 55% of the NASDAQ 100. 10. That includes Costco, by the way, which is basically number 10.
Starting point is 00:22:14 And eight, this is the big one, by the way, eight stocks of 36% of the S&P. Apple and video, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Google, Alphabet, and Meta's Facebook, Tesla and Broadcom. In the NASDAQ 100 is Netflix. Netflix is number 10, Costco's number 9. So that big concentration worked against the NASDAQ and NASDAQ 100 today. Simple as that. And if they worsen, wouldn't want to be in the queues right now. would not want to be in the queues.
Starting point is 00:22:59 So we start with that. Let me tell you what is working. Since Monday, the worst areas, pretty much four good days, the worst areas. That's the materials, the metals in mining, the industrials. the industrials. And you know, on Monday we said to you, and I said to my peeps, I think probably this could be a low and go higher.
Starting point is 00:23:31 Well, they've done pretty well for four days. Keep in mind, they're still under the highs, under moving averages, but definite improvement. And we're talking about building, construction, materials, that United Rentals that we always talk about has gone from 660 to 70, 60, still down from 890. Of course, part of that, they bought some company and the market loved it. When usually you buy a company for cash, your stock gets hit. Anyway, there's a little bit of your story today.
Starting point is 00:24:07 Up next, more on these markets, news of the day, whatever else today. I'm Gary. This is the one only investor's edge. Hello, I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of Smart Talks with IBM. I recently spoke with IBM's new director of research, Jake M. Beta. We discussed his vision for the future of quantum computing. Starting point is 00:27:26 Restrictions apply. See website for full terms and conditions. We're listening to. America is talking. Investors Edge. He's got to be pleased with that. The crowd is just on its feet here. He's a Cinderella boy.
Starting point is 00:27:45 Gary Colbomb. It comes highly recommended. You're going to feel better if you talk to him. Welcome once again to Investors Edge. One more thing, by the way, I have to mention Biden said he was whining, complaining about oligarchs. And obviously he was talking about, just so you know, this is amazing too. Zuckerberg from Facebook, Bezos from Amazon, Tim Cook from Apple, and Elon Musk from Tesla are going to be front and center like you'll see them at his inauguration.
Starting point is 00:28:31 And Biden is pissed. And that party is pissed. Why? Because Bezos, Washington Post, they hate Trump. They hate Republicans. Hmm. Zuckerberg. I can guarantee.
Starting point is 00:28:54 TU, they were beaten the crap out of Trump and Republicans in the past. Past elections. Musk, I guess, was pretty much agnostic. Tim Cook, he ain't
Starting point is 00:29:09 no Republican, and they all gave Buku bucks to his inauguration fund. Huh. Elections do have consequences. And, And Biden's pissed at them and actually upset at them.
Starting point is 00:29:33 Oligarchs and these rich mothers, he didn't say rich mothers. Meanwhile, Kamala Harris took in a billion a half. Biden's taken in bazillions. They're so full of it. The amount of money sloshing in politics is almost laughable, especially, as I said yesterday, campaign finance reform. Let me tell you why these mucky mucks are there and kissing the royal behind of Trump because Trump is going to be enacting a lot of differing pro-business policies in the next four years and they don't want to be outside looking in.
Starting point is 00:30:22 They want to be a part of the equation and maybe even a part of the equation and maybe even a part of the decision making. Duh, you know what the biggest industry in Washington, D.C. is besides carjacking? Lobbyists, which is kind of sort of carjacking. They're lobbying. That's what they're doing. And to have Biden whine and complain about it
Starting point is 00:30:56 when he's been huge part of it for 50 years, is laughable. How to bring that up. Back on point. So just letting you know. Goldman with the good reaction yesterday. J.P. Morgan with a good reaction yesterday. City Group with a good reaction.
Starting point is 00:31:15 Goldman was up another. Eh, just 1%. J.P. Morgan, less than 1%. Morgan Stanley reported today. And that was up a few percent. But just letting you know, there were a few that did not react so well in financial land. PNC Bank got hit today.
Starting point is 00:31:33 But off the lows, M&T Bank got hit today. U.S. Bank Corp got hit today. So not everything. And that's part of that process. Not everything is going to work. And we have to differentiate as we move forward. There's some other financials reporting, but most of the big ones are like, oh, Bank of America did not act so well today. But overall, the banks better because they are the greatest bookies on Earth.
Starting point is 00:32:06 Something else happened today but did not finish well. You know, we talk about semiconductor equipment makers. They make the stuff. K-L-A-C, ASML, AMAT, Lamb Research. Well, Taiwan semi reported numbers, and I guess they said something about spending. Taiwan semi-finished up eight. It was up 13 or 14. But they said something about spending, I guess the market liked.
Starting point is 00:32:34 But what I don't like, ASML was up $45, finished up $23. Still up $23, and we'll take it. K-L-A-C was up $64, finished up $31. AMAT was up 12, finished up 8. Lamb Research was up, let's call it, seven, finished up three. So they distributed that at the end of the day, and we'll see how those play out.
Starting point is 00:33:21 Their recoveries, they are not leading stocks in the market. They were trashed in the last few months when ASML came out and lowered their guidance by like 50% and the stock crashed and they've been trying to rally. Well, they tried today, but kind of the machete came out and cut them off at the knees. That showed up today. Leadership stocks. I got my list. They were strong early. They came in later than the day when the NASDAQ drops 172. And I already got an email on Apple that somebody asked, what if Apple warns? what does that mean? What if one day they warn?
Starting point is 00:34:05 Well, it simply means that the suppliers will get hit. The chipmakers that go into Apple get hit, and Apple gets hit. Would it turn into something really untowards? Well, it's never good when one of the head honcho top dog big cheeses of technology warned, by the way, we're not saying they are. But we've seen that before and it kind of sort of matters. We'll let you know. The stock is acting awful and we were very surprised by today. The stock was not acting well already. And again, as we said, there's some leakage out there about China and other things and we'll find out if that's true. Again, they report in a couple weeks. Just a good day though for the stuff. Another,
Starting point is 00:34:57 good day three days in a row. They're really not leading, but just another good day for what we call building, construction, and the like. They were dead money. They woke up Monday and three more good days. Cement stuff. Caterpillar, deer, stuff. And is it because of yield? maybe and yields which were up early today finished down again for the second day in a row so that uptrend looks like it's been neutered in yields for now 10-year yield has gone from 48 to 4-6 in three days that's good news bad news oil prices they were down today but they've been up a lot and I don't pay too much attention when I gas up, but I have in the last week, price has been going up, unfortunately. Energy prices
Starting point is 00:36:09 is huge to the economy. And I'm being asked, wait a minute, I thought Trump is drill baby drill, and that's got to be good news for oil prices. Not necessarily. Biden is already under Biden producing record amounts of oil. And by the way, drill baby drill takes time. It takes a long time. So we'll see what happens. Every dollar up in oil is a bad dollar. And just so you know, it's not just fill in your tank.
Starting point is 00:36:47 A bazillion products are made with petroleum. Oil stocks continue to be strong. They had another decent day. And by the way, one other thing, natural gas. A big bottom was put in place in the last, I don't know, eight, ten weeks, and it's still going. Still monumentally off the highs of 2009. By the way, there's something called the UNG. Natural gas, ETF, was 8,000 in 2008.
Starting point is 00:37:20 It's 20 today. I believe they had to do a bunch of reverse splits, if I'm not incorrect. They did a one for four a year ago. I'm pretty sure they did one before that. Natural gas. So expect your bills to be higher in the weeks ahead. Unfortunately. All in all today, ew.
Starting point is 00:37:47 Now, the Dow was only down 68. The Dow would have been up if not for United Health, which was down 33 bucks today. which is like 200 Dow points. That stock's crazy. Up next, news of the day, whatever else. This is the one only investor's edge. Hello, hello, I'm Malcolm Gladwell,
Starting point is 00:38:37 host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO, Arvin Krishna. And I asked him, how can companies use AI to its fullest potential to create smarter business? My one advice to that, pick areas you can scale. Don't pick the shiny little toys on the side.
Starting point is 00:38:59 For example. If anybody has more than 10% of what they had for customer service 10 years ago, they're already five years behind it. If anybody is not using AI to make their developers who write software 30% more productive today, with the goal of being 70% more productive. Yeah. Wow. So we are not asking our clients to be the first experiment on it. We say you can leverage what we did.
Starting point is 00:39:31 We are happy to bring out all our learnings, including what needs to change in the process, because the biggest change is not technology, is getting people to accept that there's a different way to do things. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. By the way, I got a lot of emails on what I said about campaign finance and stuff.
Starting point is 00:41:38 And just to give you an idea what's going, I mean, in D.C. for the inauguration, let's see. The Watergate Hotel, yes, the Watergate Hotel has a head-of-state package. $73,500 experience includes round-trip helicopter transportation from New York City to Reagan National. Excuse me. And a daily armored Maybach chauffeur gets to tour the Scandal Suite of Watergate. No, I'm not making this up. The Fairmont near Georgetown offered one of the most Lagosophore. luxurious, a $350,000 package, roundtrip airfare for four and their pet from anywhere in the U.S.
Starting point is 00:42:30 plus four nights in a suite, two butlers, a Saxifth Avenue shopping spree for $25,000, a special cocktail named after the guest. The park high, it has a $100,000 presidential. Anyway, I'm just letting you know, it's become so obscene politics and the amount of money. I just want you to remember these things. What they have said. I can tell by how many emails I get in the type of emails, people were pissed off. Not at me, but me talking about yesterday the big freaking gargantuan BS. A year and a half ago, they did the Fiscal Responsibility Act. They had the nerve the grapefruits to call it the fiscal responsibility act a budget and we're up five trillion
Starting point is 00:43:34 dollars in debt from that day that it was signed and nobody gives a crap and the media doesn't cover it obamacare again oh we're going to put millions on and we're going to cover their insurance and there's not going to be pre-existing conditions and you're still going to have your premiums go down how your premiums they lied Jonathan Gruber is on video one of the architects go look it up the lie debt ceilings debt ceilings the lie ceilings the lie campaign finance form do you recall that it was supposed to take big money out of politics it opened up the freaking spigot with these super PACs.
Starting point is 00:44:28 Do you know I can give 10 million bucks today? Oh, but it won't go directly to them. Oh, but it'll go roundabout. They made unlimited amounts of money legal and told you
Starting point is 00:44:44 they would do it otherwise. And nobody cares. And nobody cares. And the media doesn't care. They just want access. Oh, and there's so many other things that fall under these categories. And you know what it did?
Starting point is 00:45:09 It reminded people. And that's how you get the 36, 37 trillion of debt done on purpose and lied to us. That's why I'm so hoping. I wouldn't say I'm hopeful. I'm hoping that they really do something. You know how they'll know if they're being successful? It'll piss off a lot of politicians.
Starting point is 00:45:34 That's how we'll know they're being successful. Do you know the government spent $4.4 trillion the year before COVID? And it's seven now. And the trajectory takes it to 10. In five years, federal spending's up 60 some percent. Forget our inflation. Our government has the biggest inflation. and they're happy about it.
Starting point is 00:46:05 So you all better get real about this. And if Trump doesn't do the job and they're BSing, they'll throw them out too. I'm going to do my best to communicate with them and see what they do. It's a lie that it's all entitlements. It's that stupid inflation reduction act where Biden had the nerve and the grapefruits to come out.
Starting point is 00:46:42 and say yeah there was no inflation reduction in it after they passed the bill he said that it's on video is that sick or what it's just one big gigantic slush fund and we're the marks and it's got to change that's all on that i just had to bring up because i'm just thinking about all this stuff that's going on in dc for the inauguration uh they're saying 500 million bucks has been donated to the inauguration uh by Guess what people that want something. Just remember, this money, a million from Zuckerberg, this and there to be an inauguration. What do you think? They're doing it because they're nice?
Starting point is 00:47:33 No, they want to be a part of the process. They don't want to be on the other side of the table. Again, the biggest machine is lobbying in D.C., and by the way, you know who runs these lobbying companies? a bunch of ex-politicians. Welcome to the world. And hopefully somewhere along the line, it gets changed back to we the people. Not them. It's pretty simple.
Starting point is 00:48:10 Next week, probably a thousand earnings reports. In the next two to three weeks, we'll get everything. And we'll get a decent idea because some of these big things that have sway. over the indices, we're going to be paying attention. Our real big worry for the indices is that concentration. We'll be on it. Again, tomorrow, you got Adam. I'll be on a plane. Monday, we're off. I will be in studio in New York City, I do believe, Monday with Charles Payne. Check that out. You all have a great next few days. Drive carefully. When you get home, do like we do. Quite simple. Make sure you hug your family. Make sure you hug your family. Make sure you hug your
