Starting point is 00:00:47 Thanks of being with us today. Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening. It's October 18th. It's Tuesday. It's 2022. Markets are spastic. We'll cover them in a minute. We thank you for being here.

Starting point is 00:01:24 Markets closing at eight minutes. Have to pre-tape a little bit before the close. We'll take you into the close. a wicked wild day, but after the last few days, what do you expect wicked wild day? Just real quickly, some thoughts on things you're hearing that I just wanted to drive a nail through real quick. I heard today from pundits, we're just getting right into it, that earnings have been good. Either they're ignorant or lying. I heard somebody say today, Goldman Sachs, that's good stuff.
Starting point is 00:02:15 Goldman Sachs earnings were down 45% year over year. 45% year over year. And you're watching TV and you just want to, you know, dudes, get your act together. Revenues were down year over year. So I just want to mention that from the get-go because when you hear earnings reports, people tend to say things are good if the stock is up. Things are bad if the stock is down. The fact of the matter is, in any moment in time you can get good earnings that are sold off, bad earnings that are bought up. We want you to remember that.
Starting point is 00:03:15 And do you know why? Because it's the growth of earnings that ultimately will dictate stock. stock price over time. Not necessarily at the moment. Not necessarily at the week or the month. But over time. If you're not growing, your stock isn't growing over time. And yes, we know.
Starting point is 00:03:46 In the last year or so, we had bubbles where anything that breathed when higher in price, we know. We're letting you know over time. And as we have explained to you, there's a reason why through the decades, through the decades, certain companies continue to thrive. There are certain companies that thrive for a decade or two and then got too big and couldn't grow as well anymore. Didn't mean they were bad companies because they could not grow as well anymore. Their stocks stuttered and stopped and slowed down. So you want to make sure you know that because, man, there's just a lot of crap being reported. They're like my opponents because I have to keep correcting them.
Starting point is 00:04:45 I also want to let you know throughout the day today. Somebody reported that Apple is lowering production. Somebody reported somebody is lowering production. Apple. Do you know how many times? I have heard that, and it never came to fruition. And I'm always amazed they keep reporting it. And the reason I say it's usually BS, Apple is about as closed mouth, as any company out there zipped.
Starting point is 00:05:32 They don't divulge squat. So you know what the reporting is? well, I spoke to somebody who spoke to somebody who said something about the iPhone 14, and then that's it. And what happened during the day, Apple dropped knife down, got the NASDAQ dropping knife down before Apple started ignoring it again. So we constantly have to fight things in the market reported. And I've always said, these people are lucky I'm not running the regulatory agencies. Do you know how many arrests there would be for pure BS? And then you find out that somebody's grandmother's cousin's uncle owns some stock that did this, that, and the other thing.
Starting point is 00:06:38 So what can I tell you? It's one of those days of weird reports. reporting, overreporting, misreporting, not reporting. The good news is we have one great arbiter. It's the market itself when all is said and done. Not necessarily by the minute or the hour or the day. Especially the day right now. Look what's happened since Thursday.
Starting point is 00:07:08 And who knows what tomorrow brings. But when all is said and done. We just want to repeat great companies that grow their earnings and sales, strong, and for a long time, will win the day. It's happened throughout history. I've studied every decade, the biggest winners throughout the decades. Companies with 100% growth, 300% growth, 50% growth, 90% growth. You remember my Outback Steakhouse example? Early 90s, Barron's,
Starting point is 00:07:53 writes a front page, an article, oh, don't buy Outback Steakhouse. Nobody wants to eat meat anymore. Yet in my little area, Boccaratone, where I lived, there's this little shopping plaza on Southwest 18th Street where I lived. And I'm talking about a little shopping plaza where they put an Outback Steakhouse where you had weights during the week
Starting point is 00:08:13 and two and three hour waits on the week. weekend. And of course, they took that restaurant and placed it in dozens and dozens and dozens of places, and the stock was scored for a couple of years, a few years until they matured over time. Chipotle. How about that one? That stock's only gone from 39 to 1,500 selling burritos and bowls. Why? they came up with an idea that worked just about everywhere they went even though you can go into one
Starting point is 00:08:56 that's too spicy and go into another it's not spicy enough so we just pay attention we know throughout history what works what does not and then you close your eyes hold your nose and pray
Starting point is 00:09:16 how's that and they tried to get apple stock down today and they did for a bit and then it came back and we'll find out you know how we know Apple's lowering production they'll report it
Starting point is 00:09:37 so you all be careful that's all we ask you'll be careful about what you hear who you're hearing it from what they're saying we do our homework on people too especially in bare markets especially in bare markets
Starting point is 00:10:07 especially in bare markets especially in bare markets. Simple as that. So I hope you listen. We mean business and it still ain't easy. It ain't easy. This is not easy at all, kids. It's hard work, especially in rough markets. Up next. Full market wrap. Movers of the day. Netflix after the close today. I'm Gary. Hello, hello, I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of Smart Talks with IBM. I recently spoke with IBM's new director of research, Jake Embatta. We discussed his vision for the future of quantum
Starting point is 00:12:46 computing. At IBM research, what we always do is answer what is the future of computing, whether it's coming up with new algorithms, coming up with better AI, coming up with quantum, or coming up with just how do different accelerators go together. It's our DNA to answer the question of what is the future. Isn't it a perfect problem for IBM because you kind of need to have a legacy of building stuff? Yes. Building actual physical machines. Yeah, it's why I came to IBM. I wanted the experience, the culture of building hard things that others have not done before. Where do you imagine we are in the timeline of this technology? There will come a point
Starting point is 00:13:31 when it will mature, right? Yeah. My cell phone is a mature technology at this point. How far are we from that point with Quantum? By 2029, we'll build the first fault-tolerant quantum computer. That is one that can run a very, very large, large problem. To learn how IBM is building the future of computing, visit IBM.com slash quantum. Hey, it's Ryan Seacrest for Albertsons and Safeway.
Starting point is 00:14:01 It's stockup savings time now through March 31st. Spring in for storewide deals and earn four times of points. Look for in-store tags to earn on eligible items from Celsius, body armor, ORA-Ida, Silk, Capri-Sung, Bavarian Meets, and Charmin. Then clip the offer in the app for automatic event-long savings. Stack up those rewards to save even more. Enjoy savings on top of savings when you shop in-store or online for easy drive-up and go pick up or delivery.
Starting point is 00:14:27 Restrictions apply. See website for full terms and conditions. It's time to switch on the integrator units and get the brain cells. working. You're listening to Hey, this promises to be fun. Investors Edge. The last bastion of quality
Starting point is 00:14:45 programming. With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. So, one of those wicked market days again, let me describe the day to give you an understanding what we deal with every now.
Starting point is 00:15:20 And then, of course, it's not every day. But right now, The market closed yesterday. At 30,198, we're going to use the Dow. In the first five minutes, on the gap, it's up 735 points. 635 points. My bad. Another gap. Two days in a row. Doesn't matter the reason. You know, reasons, reasons, that was a song by Earth, Wind and Fire. By 1140, you went from, 635 down to 130. Back up to 435 by 2 o'clock, back to 180 at 330, and then a nice little ramp into the close, closed up 337 today. What we simply have to say, we're still in rally mode off of the amazing reversal on Thursday. Remember, the Dow dropped 5,600 points in two months. 3,800 points in one month.
Starting point is 00:16:49 That's why we're getting this rally. Everybody always has to report reasons why. Reasons why. Something has to happen. For us, it's all about perspective. It's all about perspective. The market is rallying now because of 5,600 Dow points in two months, 3,800 in one month. Whether or not at last, don't know how far it goes.
Starting point is 00:17:24 We don't know. Remember, throughout this whole bare market, we have used the same language. We have used the same language. And that is, I think we have started a counter-trend rally. of unknown price in time. We don't think the bare markets ended, but we hope it has. We say that every time. And then our favorite line need some more cards coming out of the deck versus all these people trying to be heroes, the bottom, the bottom, the bottom, the bottom, the bottom, the bottom, the bottom. So while we're scanning 2,000 stocks, 200 sectors, every country, every commodity, everything under the sun,
Starting point is 00:18:05 every night to make sure we are in front of this or in lockstep with it. They're just the bottom, the bottom, the bottom, the bottom. And that's that. And now we're an earnings season where anything goes. And you really don't know what the reactions are going to be. I can tell you again, Goldman Sachs reports earnings. They were down. 45% year over year, revenues down.
Starting point is 00:18:34 The stock still finished up. seven bucks today go figure guess what it was up 18 so too far too fast they sold it down in the aftermarket a lot less important name now than used to be but still an important name netflix the stock has gone from 701 last november closed today at 240 they reported flat numbers They lowered numbers going forward, but I guess everybody was looking for did they gain subscribers? And the stock is up 33 bucks in the aftermarket. Good if you bought in the last few months. Bad if you bought last November.
Starting point is 00:19:32 Netflix will help a little bit tomorrow. I gather some of the beta, B-E-T-A will rally up a little bit on the open. tomorrow. It's just the way it is. Netflix is one of those names, even though it's now only 1% of the NASDAQ 100. It used to be much, much bigger, much bigger influence, but it will have some influence tomorrow, I suspect. So we're in that moment in time. Earnings. I can tell you, Lockheed Martin reported 4% earnings growth, 3% revenue growth, the stock
Starting point is 00:20:15 was up 35 bucks today, 8 and 3 quarters percent. You just don't know. Our job is to pay attention, look at the reaction, and see what comes from it. And they even reported, as it was reported, mixed results with a staggering backlog that you don't know how long it's going to fill, and they've had that backlog forever. So one of those moments. But overall, we're in a rally mode right now, off of the lows, after an absolute trashing in the market, I said to my peeps all day, the charts look like crap, but we can go higher.
Starting point is 00:21:06 I get people in a minute. If the charts look like crap, how can we go higher? Because we dropped 5,600 Dow points in two months, 3,800 in one month, and may I state for the record, the Dow is supposed to. holds to hold up better than the rest. That's how bad things have been. So we'll see how far this carries. If it stops tomorrow, it goes for a little longer, goes for a while. Hey, there are people out there. You know what they're saying. Hey, it's October, midterm elections, seasonality. Oh, we're ready to roll. Okay. I'm all for it. Terrific. Now we'll see the
Starting point is 00:21:52 rest of the reports, see the reactions, take the temperature every day of the market, go from there. And Netflix's up 36 in the aftermarket now. Good news. We'll take any bit of good news we can get. Advanced declines were good today. Up down volume was good today. Even when the market sold off, it wasn't that bad. They tried to get Apple down today with BS news. And I call it BS news because you know many times it's been reported Apple's lowering this that and the other thing and we never hear about it later Apple's so tight-lipped it's not even funny and as I look at my screens though let me be clear and concise about the negative side most stocks are just bombed out and rallying up some so far simple as that most stocks are just bombed out rallying up some
Starting point is 00:22:56 up next the numbers other thoughts I'm Gary. This is the one-only Investor's Edge. Hello, hello. I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of Smart Talks with IBM. I recently spoke with IBM's new director of research, Jake Embatta. We discussed his vision for the future of quantum computing. At IBM research, what we always do is answer what is the future of computing. Whether it's coming up with new algorithms, coming up with better AI, coming up with quantum, or coming up with just how do different accelerators go together.
Starting point is 00:24:04 It's our DNA to answer the question of what is the future. There will come a point,
Starting point is 00:24:32 when it will mature, right? Yeah. My cell phone is a mature technology at this point. How far are we from that point with quantum? Starting point is 00:25:03 It's stockup savings time now through March 31st. Spring in for store-wide deals and earn four times of points. Look for in-store tags to earn on eligible items from Celsius, body armor, or aida, silk, capricon, Bavarian meats, and Charmin. Then clip the offer in the app for automatic event-long savings. Starting point is 00:25:29 See website for full terms and conditions. So what do this animal... And this animal... And this animal? Have in common? They all live on an organic valley farm. Organic valley dairy comes from small organic family farms that protect the land and the plants and animals that live on it from toxic pesticides,
Starting point is 00:25:53 which leads to a thriving ecosystem and delicious, nutritious milk and cheese. Learn more at ovi.coop and taste the difference. They're listening to America is talking. Investors Edge. He's got to be pleased with that. The crowd is just on its feet here. He's a Cinderella boy. With Gary Colbomb.
Starting point is 00:26:17 It becomes highly recommended. You're going to feel better if you talk to him. So, yeah, futures are up. NASDAQ 100 futures are up 1%. Right now, that can change overnight because of Netflix. They got some more subscribers, yay. Hey, the market rap is brought to you by Investment Dashmottles.com. That's Jim Rohraback, one of the great market timers.
Starting point is 00:26:51 No great areas with the manual. either in or out of the market was proprietary indicators. Go check it out. Investment dash models.com. Dopp 337 was up 600 and changed. The NASDAX 96 was up 250 at one time. But then it was back down to zero.
Starting point is 00:27:07 NASDAQ 100 up 85. Sox, though. Let me just say this for the record. Listen carefully. This can change tomorrow. The semiconductor group can start playing catch-up tomorrow. Three words, if nothing changes. And the semiconductors don't start playing catch-up soon.
Starting point is 00:27:41 When this rally peters out, if they don't play catch-up, and which they could, boy, they're going to be some big shorts. But I repeat, I want to make sure you don't put words in my mouth. If nothing changes, tomorrow can change. nowhere, boom, the semiconductors to the upside. Start playing catch-up. And normally they should. Normally they would. Just letting you know about the semiconductors. The bombed-out names, you know the hundreds of names that are down 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 percent from the highs. They had a good day today. I scanned them all today. They all look like crap.
Starting point is 00:28:40 Give or take little differing levels of the bare markets. Some worse than others. some way way down a lot of them are never going back to where they came from you need to know that mui importante that you know that other things I noticed today well again we don't take any joy in telling you these things
Starting point is 00:29:08 but this comes to you from me for this time if it continues if the bare market continues which is who knows but for the next time also did you know Carvanna got a downgrade today Carvana
Starting point is 00:29:29 Stock's gone from 376 down to 18 Ring Central got a downgrade today has gone from 440 down to 34 down to 34 How about Eulet Packard?
Starting point is 00:29:50 18 to 12 Intel 65 to 25 you catch in my drift you got me, you're feeling me we take no joy in this we just like dealing with reality our job
Starting point is 00:30:12 is to protect our capital Our job on the radio is to project to you how we do protect our capital, and that is, don't listen to anybody. Watch the stock price. You know what I get from everybody who calls me right now? I wish I listened to you a year ago. I wish my guy or gal listened to you. I told them what you were saying. They said he doesn't know what he's talking about.
Starting point is 00:30:51 and if you miss the 10 best days when the market goes up you miss too much and some of these people had stocks in their accounts down 50, 60, 70, 80 percent. Not making this up. Tell me the truth. And why are they down so much? Because how it works is that while things are going good, you want to own the good. so everybody own the most popular stuff. But as we told you, by a rule, rule in bare markets,
Starting point is 00:31:31 the past leaders will drop on average 70% from the highs. And that's what's happened. And now a lot of them are just in prayer mode now for them to come back. I'm stunned every day by people that can paraded in front of me about, got to own big tech, really. Okay, doke. I'm all for it. Terrific. Let big tech prove itself. I'd be very happy. So just trying to give you a little bit of advice in the worst of markets. Bare markets have no bias. Doesn't matter whether you're rich, poor, tall, short, skinny, fat.
Starting point is 00:32:36 What can I say fat? Pleasantly plump. You know, I got to be careful about what we say these days. You know that. I get people complaining about some of the stupid things. Also in the aftermarket, Adobe is up, been very weak stock. It's up $10 in the aftermarket.
Starting point is 00:32:59 They reaffirmed guidance. Oh, wait a minute. They guide 2003 earnings and revenue under expectations. The stock is still up 10 bucks. Huh. Go figure. No, really. Let me read that again.
Starting point is 00:33:20 Guides 23 EPS and revenues under expectations. And of course, they give what is known as non-gap, which I call it BS accounting. Why it's up 10 bucks in the aftermarket, don't know. Actually, probably I do know. Adobe has gone from 700 down to 292. That's why. So we're getting a little this counter trend in this little pocket of strength right now. And we'll see what tomorrow brings.
Starting point is 00:34:06 But good aftermarket on Netflix. Adobe will help a little bit on lowering numbers. Geez, I wonder what would happen if any of these people raised numbers. But good day today. Could have been better. Definitely could have been worse. We remain in rally mode off of gargantuan lows. Please do not believe the perma bulls that say the bottom is in again for the hundredth time.
Starting point is 00:34:37 Maybe it is. Let's hope it is. Let's let this market prove it daily. So far so good. All for it. Tomorrow. earnings ASML holdings
Starting point is 00:35:03 before the open Alley Financial that's an important semi-conductor AML Procter and Gamble and Travelers in the Dow after the close IBM in the Dow
Starting point is 00:35:11 Tesla after the close and by the way Tesla's numbers if I am not incorrect are supposed to be way down from last year let me see what I got going for you
Starting point is 00:35:23 a buck one versus no versus six Somebody somehow, oh, they forgot the three for one split. Yeah, I'm glad I noticed that. A buck two versus 62. And we'll see how that bad boy plays out tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:35:45 And then there'll be more Thursday and Friday. But it looks like we'll have a good open unless the world blows up overnight. And that's that. A better day in nine markets. Of course, we'll have conference calls tonight on some of these things. Just take your time, keep your feet on the ground, and hopefully this continues. Up next, this, that, and the other thing, and whatever else. This is the one only investor's edge.
Starting point is 00:37:07 Hello, hello, I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO, Arvin Krishna. And I asked him, how can companies use AI? to its fullest potential to create smarter business. My one advice to them, pick areas you can scale. Don't pick the shiny little toys on the side. For example, if anybody has more than 10% of what they had for customer service 10 years ago, they're already five years behind it.
Starting point is 00:37:43 if anybody is not using AI to make their developers who write software 30% more productive today, with the goal of being 70% more productive. Yeah. Wow. So we are not asking our clients to be the first experiment on it. We say, you can leverage what we did. We're happy to bring out all our learnings, including what needs to change in the process,
Starting point is 00:38:07 because the biggest change is not technology, is getting people to accept that there's a different way to do things. To listen to the full conversation, visit IBM.com slash smart talks. Hey, it's Ryan Seacrest for Albertsons and Safeway. It's stockup savings time now through March 31st. Today, we're exploring deep in the North American wilderness among nature's wildest plants, animals, and cows?
Starting point is 00:39:06 You're actually on an organic valley dairy farm, where nutritious, delicious organic food gets at start. But there's so much nature. Exactly. Organic Valley's small family farms protect the land and the plants and animals that call it home. Extraordinary. Sure is.

Starting point is 00:39:37 Investers Edge with Gary Culpa. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. A few things of note. In case you don't know what I do throughout the day is I send myself things. You know, I watch the markets, but there's so many things I want to read about when I see something, and I send them to me. And some things I believe are of interest that are interest to me should be of interest to you. First thing I want to tell you, do you know I have to tell my sons who live in New York City like every three or four days? Please do me a favor when you're on the subway.
Starting point is 00:40:33 Stay as far away from the train tracks as possible. and just look around you at all times and always be ready. Do you know I have to tell them that? Why? Because every three or four days, somebody's getting the crap beat out of them on a subway, either on the train or on the platform.
Starting point is 00:40:55 And I mean knived, kicked in the teeth. And you know what's happening? Do you know there were five women dressed up in green outfits, beating the crap out of people. They all will let out with no bail. Just do it again. They will let out with no bail.
Starting point is 00:41:21 They were let out with no bail. Another guy just threw somebody onto the tracks. The guy's dead. I've yet to see what they're going to charge him with. I actually have to tell my sons that. When I'm in New York City now, when I go on the subway with them, I'm standing against the wall with everybody in front of me.
Starting point is 00:41:45 I hate saying this. I bring that up because here's what I'm reading today. For all you wonderful people listening to this show in Portland, human waste and open-air drug market and homeless camps on the doorsteps of the hotel that Joe Biden is staying in in Portland, fed up with the failed woke experiment and murder rate residents are telling daily mail newspaper why they are banning the Democrats. And by the way, I don't want to make this Democrat or Republican.
Starting point is 00:42:28 I'm just dealing in facts. And it shows pictures in Portland. And by the way, every city has some of this. But then some cities have a ton of it. And they do nothing. An amazing thing, the number one job of any government, federal, state, local. There's only one job. Protect the citizenry.
Starting point is 00:42:58 That's it. That's a number two job. Protect the citizenry. Number three job. Protect the citizenry. I just saw a video of Los Angeles. A bunch of miles and miles are just squalor. So that's number one on Portland.
Starting point is 00:43:28 77-year-old Rosemary Sillen was making a rear foray into downtown. She used to love visiting Powell's City of Books. That was until she parked her car one time, only returned and find a bullet hole in its side paneling. She says, I could have been in it. I told my kids what had happened. They told me not to come here anymore. Another time she said she had pointed out what she thought was dog poop on the sidewalk to her friend. The friend said that's not from a dog, it's from a person.
