Now from the BizTalk Studios, here is Gary Cultbaum. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. I'm Gary Colpom, your host. A thanks for being with us today.
Starting point is 00:01:15 Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening. It's the 23rd. My lucky number. Just so you know, just every address I've ever had, I'm not making this up. It's at a 23 in it. Big time. Just a lot of 23s in my life. Don't know why, but the way it is.
Starting point is 00:01:38 And it's the 23rd of January, 2025. I wrote out a check today. That said 2025. And in case you don't know, this is serious talk about everything that affects you. We'll do markets, the economy, your job, your industry. The new president and the Trump moment, which will open our show every day because of how do I put it? It's a whirlwind and anything else and everything else that comes to mind. We will do debt and deficits. We'll do do do doge. If they come through with the good, we'll compliment them.
Starting point is 00:02:13 If they BS us, we will rip them. And if you do not get this radio show in your city, we'll post it at garyk.com. We'll also post it on our Twitter feed. If you don't follow us on Twitter, which is now X, go follow us on Twitter, which is now X. And if you'd like to email me, just be nice. First off, may I state for the record, we had one of those days. Let me put it best. The NASDAQ, got to make sure I got this right. At 344 was 1999, finished 20,053. So we rallied up about 90 points in the last 10, 15 minutes on the NASDAQ to finish up 44.
Starting point is 00:03:02 So the NASDAQ was up two-tenths of a percent, but it was the Dow all day that led on the back of a few names. And let me explain what's going on in the Dow in case you don't know. And this is important. It's price-weighted. so if Goldman Sachs goes up 1%, 1%, 1% on Goldman Sachs would be $6.39. I take, if it works, $6.39 times $6.5, that's $41.5, that's $41.5. Dow points on a 1% move. But if Verizon goes up 1%, it's 2.5.
Starting point is 00:04:09 So you basically have a very weird, the lack of a better word, the way the Dow works. You have stocks in the movement of things that are 20 times more important than the next. It should be changed, but they don't care what I think. So again, the price way that you know what moved today, Goldman Sachs, which is number one in price, United Health, which is number two. And, you Caterpillar, which is, I think, three or four. So good day. The Dow was up nine-tenths of one percent, while the NASDAQ was up two-tenths of one percent. But a nice little romp into the close today as it was just a weekday most of the day for the NASDAQ until the close. But time for the Trump minute. No, the Trump moment, because it takes more than a minute with President Trump.
Starting point is 00:05:20 First off, Davos. Yes, it's where the billionaires get together to tell you about climate change, and we need to do things for the climate, and then they provide pictures of 300 private jets that flew all these people in that will use up so much of that whatever stuff they say hurts the earth, but we've got to take care of our own air conditioners and don't buy SUVs, buy little cars. up yours to all of them. Anyway, President Trump was not there, but he was via satellite.
Starting point is 00:06:03 And for lack of a better word, he shot a bunch of those people with a middle finger. He called out the CEO of Bank America and said, stop screwing conservative businesses do right by them. And the head of Bank America didn't even answer being ripped like that. And he did some other ripping too. There was the usual statements that were just, how do I put it? I bench press 300 pounds this morning. no I did not of course
Starting point is 00:06:48 but statements like that over the top to be expected but I will tell you for the most part it's everything I want to hear for the most part everything I want to hear he talked about
Starting point is 00:07:09 lower taxes less regulations how in the The European Union, he was trying to open up something in Ireland, and Ireland gave him the go-ahead within a week, he said. And then you got to go pass to the European Union, he's being told it would take three to four years to pass. I believe buildings or golf courses or something like that. this is the stuff I've been talking about forever
Starting point is 00:07:49 not just at the European Union but here there are some places in this country it is an act of God to get things done too much rules regulations fees fines mandates taxes just in New York City
Starting point is 00:08:08 they now have a congestion thing of a bob where if you enter New York City at a certain spot, you pay an extra nine bucks, and the woman governor had the nerve to say, well, it was going to be 14. So we actually saved you money. It's amazing to watch these Marxists.
Starting point is 00:08:30 So I watched everything he said was like music to my ears. And then he says, I'm demanding lower interest rates, and of course that is not music to my ears. Because as we have said to you, he should not be in the position. I know he's the president to demand interest rates doing something. That should be the free markets. Now, he also says that has to do with Jay Powell and I want to meet with him, but they're supposed to be independent.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Yeah, right. So I have, I'm going to quibble with that. Most everything he said was right up my alley and then the demand to rig interest rates. No. If anything, interest rates will skyrocket. The real rates, the 10-year yield will skyrocket. If you demand the Fed to do something that the market doesn't want it to do, does that make any sense? What have I told you here?
Starting point is 00:09:44 The market is much more important than a guy behind the desk moving Fed funds rates. The only time he was important in a big way, well, when he printed to $9 trillion, and when he's been wrong big time, and we know what's happened there. So just let you know, and the other thing I must state, he is answering more questions in a couple of days than the last guy, I think in the last two years. It's good to even have that. And as we have stated to you, we just hope they do the right thing. And part of that is you don't have to do too. too much. We got you. The people of this country work their arses off to make better for themselves
Starting point is 00:10:47 and bigger for themselves on a daily basis. That's what this country is about. In the past, I've gotten to interview for the youth of the year at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida, I think I've done two or three times. And these young men and women, all they would talk about is where they want to go with their lives. What do they want to do better for themselves and family? I remember the first person I interviewed, all he cared about was becoming successful so he can get and buy a home, a real good home for his mom.
Starting point is 00:11:29 Think about that. So President Trump, low taxes, less regulations, go play golf. Up next, we'll put a bow on that, and then the markets. I'm Gary, this is the one only Investor's Edge. Hi, I'm Gary Kalpom, hosted a nationally syndicated radio show Investors Edge.

Hello, hello, I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO, Arvin Krishna. And I asked him, how can companies use AI? to its fullest potential to create smarter business. My one advice to them, pick areas you can scale.
Starting point is 00:13:23 Don't pick the shiny little toys on the side. For example, if anybody has more than 10% of what they had for customer service 10 years ago, they're already five years behind. If anybody is not using AI to make their developers who write software, where 30% more productive today, with the goal of being 70% more productive. Yeah. Wow. So we are not asking our clients
Starting point is 00:13:54 to be the first experiment on it. We say, you can leverage what we did. We're happy to bring out all our learnings, including what needs to change in the process, because the biggest change is not technology, is getting people to accept that there's a different way to do things. To listen to the full conversation,

Starting point is 00:15:59 You're listening to. Hey, this promises to be fun. Investors Edge. The last bastion of quality programming. With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. Let me finish up with the Trump moment, which is more than a moment. I love that he is following up on immigration.
Starting point is 00:16:35 and let me tell you where we stand on immigration in case this is the first time you're listening and you think because we want not an open border that we are not against immigration. We think come one, come all. immigrants made this country throughout the decades, but we have to have vetting and some semblance of control. Now Joe Biden on purpose opened the borders. Let me be clear on this. He opened the borders.
Starting point is 00:17:23 I came through my neighborhood a little while ago, and in order to get into my neighborhood, you have to open a gate. Joe Biden opened the gate, and he did it on purpose. And we don't really know the exact number that has come through, but it's in the bazillions. And admittedly, by the Biden administration, they don't know where some people are, and they don't know if their bad people are here.
Starting point is 00:17:53 Think about that. your number one two three four five job is to protect the citizens of the country and you don't know if a terrorist has come through oh by the way some have that have been caught so Donald Trump now has 1500 military at the border there is now you are staying in Mexico now that may sound then if you turn on CNN that They're acting like it's the worst thing in the world, but that's the law. Imagine you're just following laws that if you want to come here, you've got to do it the right way. What a concept. I have a very close friend that did it the right way. And it was time, sweat, toil, money, tears, but became a same.
Starting point is 00:19:01 citizen. Did everything right? What a concept. And to be clear, I don't look at these masses as bad people for the most part. They're trying to get the hell out of Venezuela where this scumbag is destroying the country. And of course, there are other countries in South America being run by clowns. We get that. On time. of that, the media blacked out the missing children. Under Trump, when there was a problem with the children, they ran it 24-7 under Biden. They blacked it out. You never heard a word about how many children are missing that was sent through the border and whether they were being trafficked or what have you. As usual, the media took their bias to links that we never
Starting point is 00:20:03 They didn't care about safety. So Trump is actually following through on the border, and that's great. And if he can get it to the point where, A, legally, make it a little easier to get in here. But you have to be vetted. And B, we're shut down. That's great news because I got news for you. There are cities being overrun, the cost to take care of them, in the billions. while we have homeless veterans on the street.
Starting point is 00:20:39 Do you know I engage with the homeless when I'm in New York City and I ask them? And to a person, they're all saying, yeah, I'm a veteran and so and so. And I would ask how you got here and they tell me they lost their job and they couldn't get up. That while these people that are coming in are being housed, fed, clothed, and given cards, not credit cards, just money cards. It's insanity. So good to see. That'll help also with our fiscal well-being of this country.
Starting point is 00:21:21 And we'll keep you a prize as we move forward with this because this is Muay importante. But if you do have a chance, go check out Trump and his Davos crowd. He probably pissed off nine out of ten of them. He was ruthless against the Davos crowd. And by the way, as I've stated, if you ever have a chance to go to Davos, it's pretty there nice. Really nice. Okay, I know we call it the Trump moment, but man, oh man, he's doing a lot. And he's front and center.
Starting point is 00:21:58 and he means business. And let's hope we'll just keep our fingers crossed the things he does works out to the benefit of you and I in this country and we'll keep a close watch on it. And I wrote down, let's see, anything else that I wrote down, I mentioned to leave markets alone and shush on the interest rates, but I don't think he'll be listening to me. What do you think? All right, back on the markets. Just another good day and a good close. This started last Monday. Remember, into last Monday, it was a horror show.
Starting point is 00:22:40 All these areas I was telling you to avoid. And on Monday, it woke up. And since then, you had one down day yesterday. And I liked how we finished today. Though there's some warts, there's some warts. But new high list starting to pick up. right in front of earnings, though. I have to tell you, I'm not going to mention which.
Starting point is 00:23:06 There's like five stocks I want to buy right now. They all report next week. You know what that means? I ain't buying them right now. Why? Because I have no clue whether they gap them up or gap them down next week. And when I say next week, four business days. I don't have the grapefruit enough courage to do that.
Starting point is 00:23:30 And let me be clear, Netflix gaps up. I can name a few that gap down. And we just don't want to play that game. But overall, good finish. The semis were down pretty darn big early. They had a good finish to the end of the day. Tomorrow's another day. We'll see what happens.
Starting point is 00:23:53 And of course, we are in the midst of earning season. Nothing is off the table. We will be on top of it. every little thing. And next week, I printed out my earnings paid, and all I can tell you, there is a ton, a ton. In fact, in a couple of minutes, I'm just going to quickly name a few so you have an understanding why we take a step back into earnings season. That's up next.
Starting point is 00:24:35 And more. this is the one only investors edge Hello, hello, I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO, Arvin Krishna, and I asked him,

Starting point is 00:27:55 Next week. In order of days. New Corps, Brown and Brown, Boeing in the Dow, GM, JetBlue, Kimberly Clark, Packard, Progressive Insurance, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, SAP, a strong software company out of Germany. How about Cuervo, Starbucks, Striker? How about ASML Holdings, Brinker International's, Corning, Flextronics, T-Mobile, Tiva Pharmaceuticals, UBS? How about Ameriprise? How about C.H. Robinson in the transports?
Starting point is 00:28:34 How about IBM in the Dow? Or Lamb Research, very important semiconductor, or Landstar System, the big-time trucker, or Meritage Homes? How about meta? That's Facebook. Ooh, and how about Microsoft? Ooh, in the Dow. How about Terodyne? How about, by the way, Meta, Microsoft, and Tesla will be after the close, I think, on Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:29:01 No, Wednesday. I take that back. Oh, and United Rentals and Waste Management and Western Digital and World Pool. And how about Alibaba from China? How about, what else? Evercore. How about that one? How about Qualcomm or Otis Elevators?
Starting point is 00:29:21 How about Skyworks? Stiefel Financial. How about that? You think we're done? How about Blackstone, Avery Denison, Philip Morris, Caterpillar in the Dow, Comcast, Dover, Dow, Mastercard, How about Northrop Grumman, Parker Hanofin?
Starting point is 00:29:44 Am I boring? STM microelectronics, UPS, tractor supply, KLA 10 core, Intel, that's out of the Dow. Decker's, by the way, Decker's is one of those names I really wanted to buy today. I'll mention that one. Can't do it. How about Apple, which is acting like the south end of your northbound jackass, visa in the Dow. Oh, Amazon. By the way, Amazon is not declared what day yet.
Starting point is 00:30:11 How about ABV? How about that one? How about Archbess, the trucker, or Chevron in the Dow, or Eton, or Exxon, which used to be in the Dow, how about WW Granger? How about that? That's just next week. You think there's going to be a lot of jello moving on the plate? Speaking of jello moving on the plate, we just want to let you know today that GE, which is now GE Aerospace,
Starting point is 00:30:39 because they broke things up, finished up 12 today, but was up like 19, but that's like, a nice little four-month move above range and we'll see if that has continuation. Union Pacific on a 1% drop in sales that was up 5% today on their earnings. Elevance, one of those managed care stocks that has been crushed. That was up 10 bucks to 401. It was 567 four months ago, but at least it was up. I do have to mention TKO. You know who that is right? They own WWWE, The UC, whatever. That was up nine today to 152. They cut some deal, but also a company is buying up a lot of the stock.
Starting point is 00:31:24 They're just a 10% holder. And I think the market like that, that had a nice little breakout of a little flat range today. That was on heavy volume. We'll see if that has continuation. I'm looking at this. Oh, Netflix. Remember Netflix hit a thousand yesterday and closed at 9. 50. That was up 30 bucks today. It was going all over the map today. It was up 30, up 14, up 28, up 12, finished up 30. The story on that, five upgrades of Netflix. You think that'll move a stock? Five upgrades. I have not bought it back as of yet. I was contemplating it today. And then they finished it pretty well. We'll see what tomorrow brings.
Starting point is 00:32:14 And again, the story goes. And weirdly, they kind of lowered guidance, but subscribership expectations were 5 million. They came in at 18 or 19. I would think guidance would be raised big time. I also now have to mention nuclear. I'm just letting you know I've got three nuclear stocks. None of them have sales. One of them has a $7.5 billion market cap.
Starting point is 00:32:57 Came out as a SPAC. The second one, no sales, came out as a SPAC, has a $4.8 billion market cap. The next one has no sales. Came out as a $4.00 IPO, still has a $4.5.00 market cap. no sales it has I got to make sure this give me one second only a 1.5 billion dollar market cap yet only how do we know any of these startups are going to be the beneficiaries of anything nuclear we don't yet the speculators are out there
Starting point is 00:34:02 speculating we don't tell you what to do We don't tell you to buy, sell, short, or cover. We will just repeat. Companies that have no sales in the short run can skyrocket it. We have seen it through the ages of froth and speculation at any price. Always, eventually, they go back to where they came from. unless they get bought out. And as you know, we have stated for the record, there's been a bunch of no sales biotechs bought out by Big Pharma,
Starting point is 00:34:48 betting on a drug or two drugs. And I probably should have kept up on what was successful or what wasn't. I have not. But on that other end, I think we have listed a couple of hundred stocks. maybe more of no sales biotechs that overnight we found out the placebo did better than the drug in phase two trials and they dropped 50% overnight. In fact, we had one that dropped 90% overnight. So you get to decide.
Starting point is 00:35:28 We'll let you decide on them because the fact that a matter is, sometimes you get a froth theme, a speculative theme, and they go vertical. We can't argue the point. We don't have the courage to play companies that if your son or daughter put out a lemonade stand on the corner and sold one glass of lemonade, they would have more sales than these companies. Now, of course, if things change, that's a different story. What would mean by that? Hey, who knows what one of these companies ends up with billions in revenues?
Starting point is 00:36:16 There's always that chance. Just right now, there ain't squat, but they are hot. Oh, I found one more. Let me see what this one looks like. Oops, no sales. And has been public since, I don't know how you stay public from 2000 to 2025 with no sales. And by the way, the stock closed at 10 today. It was $4,000 in the year 2000.
Starting point is 00:36:52 No, I'm not making that up. And it closed with a market cap today, only $160 million. So imagine your public since the year 2000. And you have no sales, 25 years. Yet, people are buying it. They did a 2 for 15 reverse split in 2019. I can't tell if they've done one before that. One would suggest they did in order to go from 4,000 to where it is right now.
Starting point is 00:37:30 Anyway, our first job we believe is Keep the house in order There's a lot of money to lose if you get a little crazy Of course there's a lot of money to make And I can tell you these things went up 10 to 15% today Up next, this is that and the other thing This is the one only investor's edge
Starting point is 00:37:57 Hello, I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of Smart Talks with IBM I recently spoke with IBM's new director of research, Jake Mbeta. We discussed his vision for the future of quantum computing. At IBM research, what we always do is answer what is the future of computing, whether it's coming up with new algorithms, coming up with better AI, coming up with quantum, or coming up with just how do different accelerators go together. It's our DNA to answer the question of what is the future. Isn't it a perfect problem for IBM because you kind of need to be a problem.
Starting point is 00:38:56 have a legacy of building stuff. Yes. Building actual physical machines. Yeah, it's why I came to IBM. I wanted the experience, the culture of building hard things that others have not done before. Where do you imagine we are in the timeline of this technology? There will come a point when it will mature. Right?
Starting point is 00:39:21 Yeah. My cell phone is a mature technology at this point. How far are we from that point with quantum? By 2029, we'll build the first fault-tolerant quantum computer. That is one that can run a very, very large, large problem. To learn how IBM is building the future of computing, visit IBM.com slash quantum. Amazon Hub Delivery wants to partner with your business. Starting point is 00:41:21 What are we waiting for? What are you waiting for? One, two, ready, go. In the Gester's Edge. With Gary Culpa. Dun-na-da. All right. Let's see.
Starting point is 00:41:50 Intuitive Surgical raised their numbers recently. Stocks made a decent move, but is down $18, $16 in the aftermarket to $592 for whatever they said. And I was interested in seeing Texas Instruments closed at $200. It's at $1.95. D4 down about six bucks. They guided below consensus, which actually has been good for stocks recently. And CSX, an important rail, down about a buck in the after market, are down about 3%. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:42:23 Huh. Lulu Llemon files for a stock offering? Why do they need to file? Oh, probably a seller. Five million shares. That'll probably hit that a little bit tomorrow. I don't see anything else of note in the aftermarket. Oh, let's see, Twilio announced above consensus,
Starting point is 00:42:48 and the stock's up $10 in the aftermarket. So they actually pre-announced, even though they were supposed to announce in the next couple of weeks. Let's see. They announced revenues instead of being 1.16 billion. It's going to be 1.19 billion. Hey, thanks. Hey, but guess what?
Starting point is 00:43:10 It's up about 10% in the aftermarket. So actually pre-announcing is a good thing. The president signed executive order to create a cryptocurrency working group. If I had his ear, I'd tell him to be a little bit careful. Why? the last bare market in the NASDAQ saw Bitcoin drop 75%. I will guarantee you if that occurs again, if, I'm not saying it's going to,
Starting point is 00:43:57 there goes the midterms. What do people vote with? That's right, they're wallets. That's right. They're wallets. if I had his ear, I'd give him a little bit, you know. Lastly, Boeing projects fourth quarter revenue below consensus, only down about five bucks in the aftermarket as I speak.
Starting point is 00:44:36 And that is your aftermarket report. So Twilio pre-announces looks like, Boeing preannounces also. We'll see what that means in the morning. And that is that as we head into tomorrow. As we have said to you, we really got to clean up Washington, D.C. And that really is about you. You do know that, right? So let me read to you. Joe Biden's Energy Secretary, Jennifer Granholm, at the last minute on 3rd, Thursday sent more than $15 billion in Biden's green energy loans to her home state. Many of them are donors to her gubernatorial campaign. She approved a massive $22.9 billion in these 11th-hour green loans, sending nearly 70% to Michigan.
Starting point is 00:45:51 I'm going to quote somebody, feathering her political nest. This is exactly what I have been talking about. That has to stop. This is government abuse of power with our tax dollars. I am in hopes. Well, Vivek is out of Doge, but I am in hopes Elon looks at something like this. and does something. It's enough.
Starting point is 00:46:35 Just remember what they've done. They raise the bar so much on spending and debt and deficits that $100 billion has become a footnote to them. Thus, they will abuse us of our $100 billion. So let's hope that they really mean business and look at the eyes of every politician in D.C. And tell them, that's it. It's over. It's done.
Starting point is 00:47:18 This is Granholm, just another sleaze. And by the way, this is not about just one side. The amount of insider trading they are doing? Pure slees we'd go to jail for. So let's hope all the talk out of this new administration on how they're going to clean up and clean the swamp. This is where you start. They've turned us into their big gargantuan. gargantuan slush fund
Starting point is 00:48:08 and there are no reaper cussions this grand home she just got a bunch of money to run for governor and nobody's going to call her on it well maybe one news outlet but then it's gone think about that
Starting point is 00:48:29 think about 22.9 billion of our tax dollars do you know what that can be done with? Do you know what good we can do with that? In cities that need help, cleaning things up, roads, bridges, streets, or whatever. Get pissed, ladies and gentlemen. Hey, tomorrow should be on noon hour Fox Business Network. You'll have a great evening drive carefully. And when you get home to like we do, quite simple. Make sure you hug your family.
Starting point is 00:49:16 make sure you hug your children. They will feel better. You will feel better. I promise, stay well, be well. Serenity now. My dog's been sitting here during the whole show and didn't say a word. Gotta love that. And good night.
