Investor's Edge with Gary Coltbaum.
Straight talk about you and your money.
Now from the BizTalk Studios, here is Gary Cultbaum.
And welcome once again to Investors Edge.
I'm Gary Coltbaum, your host.
A thanks of being with us today.
Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you're listening.
It's Wednesday, October 28, 2006.
Hope you having a good day.
As always, serious talk on everything that affects you.
We'll do the markets, the elections that are coming up,
all the earnings that have been coming out and a lot of jello moving on the plate both ways,
including aftermarket today.
We'll do debt and deficits.
Scams, shams, corruption, the Fed.
You name it, we cover it.
If you don't get this radio show in your city, we'll post it at garyk.com.
We'll also post on our X feed.
If you don't follow us on X, you should.
Just put our name.
And if you like to email us, just be nice.
Just be respectful.
Why? Because we'll be nice and respectful back and all that stuff.
Unless you like Hamas or rob the bank today.
Ladies and gentlemen, the Fed, the central bank today kept rates where they are.
But the 10-year yield went up 0.52 to 5.045.
The 30-year went up to 5.361.56.
Gary, what the hell are you talking about?
What do they do?
So I'm going to do a little dissertation for you, ladies and gentlemen, to explain exactly what the story is because I know it's reported all the time, the Fed. Are they going to raise rates? Are they going to lower rates? What are they going to do next? How are they going to do it? And we've been saying to you for years, they are the most overrated.
part of our government by far. We don't need them. They should be absolved, gone, dissolved. The free market
will do the job, but somehow they've become what they have become. Now, we have had good Fed heads
that don't do much. And then we had Jay Powell, affectionately known as the illness Powellitis,
who actually said he's the economy.
Just so you know what the stated job for these people are
to keep prices stable, inflation and control,
and the job market steady.
Think about that.
One person with 11 others who vote
are going to control a $30 trillion economy?
Of course not.
They can't.
They make like they can.
but every now and then they can go overboard.
So Jay Powell, in his infinite wisdom,
we had COVID, remember that?
And he got all nervous, so he took his rates down to zero.
It's called federal funds.
And all that is is what banks charge overnight to each other and crap like that.
They have a little effect on other things.
but not much.
And then there's the free market.
Bonds, government bonds.
You know what a government bond is?
You lend the government money for 10 years,
and they're going to pay you a yield.
And since they've always paid,
supposedly you don't have to worry ever about trouble,
unlike if you buy a corporate bond that goes out of business.
Anyway, J. Powell decided
let's go backwards. Ben Bernanke, during 0708, one of the causes of the spiraling housing market and the problems back then, because he kept interest rates too easy, started to print money. What the hell does that mean? Well, just print money out of thin air. That's what he decided to do. Print money out of thin air. Gave 800 billion.
dollars to the banks and the fraudsters and he told us don't worry no no no no don't worry it's not
going to last long that's what he told us and of course that was a lie because they printed up to
nine trillion dollars imagine j palel i think we're at four trillion he printed five trillion dollars
out of thin air and what did he do he interfered with the free market you know you know you
You buying bonds, somebody else selling bonds, and he bought up the whole freaking bond market
and took interest rates on the 10 year down to a half percent.
Now, why would that happen?
Because when investors and traders and speculators, see he's buying it all up, they joined in.
So you ended up with 3% and less mortgages and major housing distortions, which we are feeling today.
But I digress.
Let's continue.
You now have Kevin Warsh in there who runs the Fed, and we like them much better than Powell.
Why?
Because I do not believe he thinks he's a celebrity.
I do not think he thinks he's God and runs the whole economy, but still, I think there's a big part of that.
Meaning, they think they matter a lot.
they think that they can move the economy around a $30 trillion economy
where what, about 160 million of us go to work every day?
So they're still in business.
Terrific.
They're still in business.
We'll throw them a party.
But ladies and gentlemen,
I'm going to take a few minutes of your time to explain to you
the real economy, the one that really matters.
So imagine if somebody decided to open a restaurant.
Let's call it Gary Kays.
And it basically is a competitor to other type of sub-type restaurants,
like Subway would compete.
What's the other one?
Jersey mics and stuff.
But there's Gary Kay's.
Gary Kay decided to risk his capital
to open that place
in hopes it would do so well
that they can expand.
And what he does,
he spends money, gets a place,
pays rent to somebody
so that somebody is getting revenue
that owns that area,
or that real estate, or maybe Gary bought that real estate from somebody else.
But what does Gary also have to do?
He's got to buy equipment and every day buy food,
hire some people to prepare and deliver to customers.
And something happens.
It's a success.
So Gary realizes he's onto something.
got just one restaurant, let's try for two.
And it was onto something, it's working.
And whatever he's selling that's different, the service is better, who knows, or maybe
he's pricing is better, or maybe it was those croissants that have, that are better than
others, and his food is fresher, whatever it may be.
And you know what?
he decides, I'm going to expand around central Florida, I'm going to do five.
But what happens when you have five of these restaurants?
Well, you now have to have about 20 to 25 employees.
Oh, and you may need somebody to be a manager of the five places,
so that manager who did not have a job is now getting a decent salary,
and now he can do things with money he couldn't do before.
or maybe take his wife out to a nice restaurant or take a three-day vacation.
And if he goes to that restaurant, that's going to provide that other restaurant with revenue.
So that restaurant can grow and maybe hire people.
But Gary's not done.
Gary's not done.
What does he do next?
He speaks to a specialist in franchising because he thinks, man, this thing is working and working good.
And he decides to try and franchise it.
And it's a hit. And five years down the road, Gary has 150 stores around the country, doing a million a store, 150 million in revenue.
And what does he have? He has five regional managers that he's paying 200,000 a year. None of them had jobs before us, but those are five people now that can go on vacation, buy clothes for the wife, maybe a prod of purse, and make them,
wealthier. And those 100 places now have, whoa, 700 employees that may or may not have a job
beforehand. And you know what they're all doing? They're getting a paycheck. And you know what
they're doing their paycheck? They're visiting other places. But we're not done because Gary
has got to buy the lettuce from somebody. He's got to buy the tomatoes from somebody, the croissants
from somebody or maybe makes them himself. Up next. Let's spread the wealth up next with Gary Case
to explain the economy to you. And then we'll do the markets. This is the one only Investors Edge.

Investment advisory services offered through Coltbaum Capital Management.
It's time to switch on the integrator units and get the brain cells working.
You're listening to.
Hey, this promises to be fun.
Investors Edge.
The last bastion of quality programming.
With Gary Coltbaum.
It doesn't get better than this.
Hey, welcome once again.
to Investors Edge. So Gary Kay's is now 150, 150 restaurants. But something else happens.
Gary Kay realizes, you know, I got all these restaurants and working well. He thinks he's going to go
international. He thinks he's on to something. And by going international, he goes to a thousand.
thousand restaurants, a thousand restaurants with 10,000 employees doing zillions of dollars.
And what's the economy? It's the fact that Gary's got a hire for every one of those restaurants.
He's got to get real estate for every one of those restaurants, leasing or buying.
He paid taxes on the profits of those restaurants. He's got some. He's got some. He's got
suppliers of all kinds.
You name it.
Chairs, tables,
plastic, forks, knives, spoons,
napkins, cups.
It's doing business with Coca-Cola products.
And because he's buying so much,
he went to small businesses
to get a lot of the things
and that flourished those small businesses
and those small businesses are now growing leaps and bounds.
And those small businesses are hiring more and more people.
And what do you have?
You have a virtuous business cycle, not a vicious cycle, like Kmart,
where Kmart had every chance to do great things,
but you had this schmuck Eddie Lampert hedge fund guy
that came in, make himself a billionaire offer,
and destroyed the company.
Now that's Gary Kays.
That's fantasy.
But Chipotle that has 4,000 restaurants right now, 4,189 locations in the United States and 100 international locations.
Chipotle that does 13 billion in revenues started with one.
Started with one.
And when you walk into a Chipotle now, they got to buy onions from somebody.
You know that supplier of onions is making a hell of a lot of money.
The economy.
How about those peppers?
Guess what?
Somebody who's supplying those peppers making a hell of a lot of money.
How about for the guac, the avocado?
Somebody's making a hell of a lot of money.
How about the chicken?
How about the beef?
How about the corn and the tomatoes?
somebody's making a hell of a lot of money.
How about all those chairs and tables at the Chapo-Lays?
Somebody's making a hell of a lot of money.
And those other companies that are making a hell of a lot of money.
You know what they're doing because they have the Chipotle account?
And if they've done a great job for Chipotle, they will keep the account.
Well, they're going to hire a hell of a lot of people.
You know what those hell of a lot of people are going to do because they're making a bunch more money?
Oh, they're going to go on vacations.
And you know what they're going to do?
They're going to go on Delta United or maybe Emirates.
And you know what happens when they fly Delta?
Well, Delta gets revenues.
And if there's more revenues for Delta, the stock price goes up.
Oh, and if Chipotle does well, the stock price goes up.
And Chipotle's market cap now is $35 billion of wealth.
Oh, by the way, it was a lot higher.
That's the freaking economy.
not some yachts sitting behind the desk pressing a button.
I'm going to raise the rates a quarter of point.
Oh, I'm going to hold rates here.
Oh, I'm going to low rates here.
It's not the President of the United States who lies about it every day.
It's you.
It's me.
It's your relatives, hopefully.
It's your friends.
it's all of us waking up every freaking day wanting to do better for ourselves and our families.
Why? To enjoy the fruits of our labor. So our kids can have a better life than we have.
So you can take them on vacations and not even care about yourself, but watch your kids in the water off a beach or diving into a pool or on a ride at Universal or Disney.
smiling and laughing, the fruits of our labor.
That's the freaking economy.
You know what the government is?
They're a freaking headwind.
They have all taken advantage of us with $2 trillion deficits.
Trillion go into interest.
Massive corruption.
Trump and his family making themselves billions of dollars off of government,
not off the economy.
Biden did the same thing. So when you hear about the Fed, when you're hearing Trump or Hassett or Obama or Biden or any of these Fed heads, the $30 trillion economy that we have is us, you and I.
because when I go to Starbucks every day here in central Florida,
I'm noticing that they fix the place up.
And more and more people are showing up.
And I already asked and found out they had a higher five extra people.
And those five people may or may not have had a job.
And maybe they're not making a lot of money right now,
but their psyche is better.
And instead of sitting home this weekend,
they may just go to a movie and may just buy some popcorn.
And you know what that is?
That's revenue for the movie theater.
And if the movie theater is doing well, guess what they're going to do?
They're going to hire more people.
And if they hire more people, those people, after the movies are out, they may go next door to the ice cream shop.
That's usually next to movie theaters.
And if the ice cream shop is doing well, guess what the ice cream shop does?
Hire more people.
Order more ice cream.
You're catching my drift?
No freaking Fedhead matters.
The government done nothing but damage.
How is Trump done for the economy that he says the greatest ever?
The greatest ever.
Do you know Trump's creation of jobs is the worst in the first 20 months that a president's had in forever?
Creation of jobs, the most important part of the equation?
Oh, he's forgotten that.
The economy, you and I, up next.
Speaking of the economy, oh, the markets.
This is the one knowing the investors' edge.
They're listening to.
America is talking.
Investors Edge.
He's got to be pleased with that.
The crowd is just on his feet here.
He's a Cinderella boy.
With Gary Colbomb.
It comes highly recommended.
You're going to feel better if you talk to him.
How about that for that?
making sense. Is it any wonder the way I think about you and I, how pissed off I am at
Trump and his family for, you'll go read up how he's made they made their billions, billions
off of the presidency while we're working our asses off to do better for ourselves and families
and he used the power of the government for billions. By the Biden.
millions. Biden screwed up. He should have gone for the billions. Is it any wonder, I can't stand any of them.
Is it any wonder that they promised to do something about the debt and the deficits? And we're just, it's obscene what they're doing.
And to tell us, oh, the economy's great when you're running two trillion dollar deficits. There's no chance of an economy being great when you have two trillion dollar deficits. There's no chance. There's no chance.
they're using us.
And do you see all the,
I'm looking at an ad on my TV right now,
what they're going to do for us?
They ain't doing squat for us.
We're doing for us.
We're the economy.
And somewhere along the line,
oh, by the way, let me backtrack.
Do not forget they promised campaign finance
reformed years ago,
and what did they do?
They opened the,
spigot, $1.5 billion to Kamala Harris. And she's still lost. Elon Musk, I think, has put 400,
how much 400 million into Senate races. That was never supposed to be. They lied. How about term
limits? They promised that. The greatest con artistry in the history of the world
is the people in our government right now
and over the past few administrations.
And I highly expect
when the Republicans lose
for Trump to fight it like he did in 2020
and still saying he won,
which is killing him,
killing the Republicans for this election.
So anyway, backtrack,
we're the economy.
We're the virtuous cycle.
Chipotle has created $35 billion of wealth.
Walmart.
Walmart.
Walmart.
Walmart.
Who people like Bernie Sanders piss all over because they're not unionized.
$946 billion of wealth.
Do you know a ton of the managers at Wall?
Walmart started as cashiers?
Do you know with Disney, a while back, the man who ran Disney World, the parks and everything,
started as a busboy at the contemporary hotel?
And I think the guy that's running it now started the same way.
That's the fricking economy.
Not some jackasses pressing buttons and doing little press conferences after when, well, we
think inflation is 2.6 and we're looking.
looking at it, we'll see how it goes, and maybe we'll do this and maybe we'll do that.
And then we've got to watch Trump and his BS every night until the election.
I've never seen anything.
Well, then again, I take that back.
I have.
We're the economy.
And when I say to you, in your industry, make yourself in this, make the indisposable, make yourself the go-to person at your firm.
get in early, work late.
Learn the business.
Treat yourself like an owner.
When we tell you that we mean it.
And if you're tired of working for somebody, find your passion, find your love, maybe start a business.
And who knows?
Who knows?
All right.
Next.
There's some wild things going on in the market today.
So I think I can just go backwards.
Google reported earnings closed at 324.
it's 297.
That's a big drop for a Google.
But Microsoft closed at 531 is 551 today.
Somewhat offsetting.
But dang, I'm seeing Fortinette down $40.
And that is in the software security.
That's causing Palo Alto networks to go from 394 to 373.
Croutstrike to go from 266 to 251.
And on and on, Octa go and on, octa, go in.
from 222 to 2212.
I mean, it's wild swings.
Today, today,
ADP down 14 to 278.
F5 networks down 96 to 363.
Garman down 16 to 272.
LPL Financial, a great company,
down 48 to 269.
Landstar, Trucker, down 37 to 131.
And by the way, the truckers all got hit today.
How about Lennox International,
down 39 to 332. Old Dominion, another trucker down 13 to 17 to 17 to 307. Waste management, garbage, down 10 to 225. But on the other end, Evercore, up 32 to 292.
Brinker International, Chili speaking of restaurants, up 24 to 220. And boy, has Brinker International done a wonderful job with Chili's.
over the last few years.
Lab Corps, where you give your blood, up 29 to 360.
Verve, one of those data center management companies,
up 34 to 242.
That's after crashing, of course.
Dow up 97, NASDAQ up 72, NASDAQ 100 up 161.
The semiconductors had a good day today.
I do see they're down in the aftermarket.
Yeah, down a bunch.
KLAC, that's up a few bucks, but I have to see what's down.
I have yet to see all the other things that are going on, but just wild swings in the market,
ladies and gentlemen.
It's the best way I can explain it.
Strength, some of the medical and health care, medical research, having a very good day today.
Very good day.
Strength, some of the banks today off of the Fed.
I don't know why.
By the way, strength yields went up today off of the Fed.
We'll see what happens tomorrow.
Just, I call it just a lot of jello moving on the plate.
And I have to tell you when I'm done with this show,
I'm getting in my hot tub.
I'm going to spend 10 minutes at 102.
Take it easy.
Relax.
Winston is gone.
Normally I'd hang with him for a bit.
Then I'll come up here and go through with a wasteland of earnings reports,
both good and bad.
and see what we can figure out and find out.
Just wild swings today, Micron.
You ready for this?
In the aftermarket.
Here's the interesting.
Micron today was up 54, but is down 24 bucks in the aftermarket.
Sandisk was up 100 and was up 100 is down 27 in the aftermarket.
Why?
Somebody said something.
Again, just wild swings.
How about this?
Oracle finally said something the market liked.
You know what that was?
They're going to slow down.
Oracle stock had gone from 345 to 114.
Today it was up 14 bucks to 144.
Why?
They said they're going to slow down.
You know what they're going to slow down on?
The freaking debt and the spending,
which is so freaking out of hand.
How many times have I said freaking today?
So freaking out of hand by some of these artificial intelligence thing.
I'm a bobs.
it's so weird to watch
and as we've said to you for a long time
and let's hope we're wrong
the numbers don't add up
you know my line
you can't fit a 10 pound salami
in a 5 pound bag
well we'll just see how it plays out ladies and gentlemen
just let you know just some wild
again Microsoft strong Google
very weak Microsoft strong
Google week
and there's some other things going on
in the aftermarket I got to find
I did mention Fortnite, right?
Yeah.
I'm looking for others as I speak, by the way.
Service now.
Closed at 150.
It's 125 in the aftermarket.
That's not going to help the software group.
I can tell you that.
Man, oh man.
Just some wild swinging going on, ladies and gentlemen.
But I wanted to start the show today with you and me.
And Gary Kays.
which by the way is fictional.
Hey, up next, more in these markets
and whatever else.
This is the one on Investors' Edge.
You're listening to
What are we waiting for?
Well, what are you waiting for?
One, two, ready, go.
Action!
In Investors Edge
with Gary Culpa.
Hey, welcome once again to Investors Edge.
By the way, speaking of Smart,
I mentioned to you Starbucks,
The Starbucks, where I am up north when I visit there, fix the place up, much busier.
The one here in central Florida, much busier.
They fixed it up really nice.
They have this thing on the wall now that shows your name and if it's being prepared, if it's ready.
The people seem to be happier.
So leave no doubt, the new CEO who came in, is doing a pretty damn good job.
Good to see.
That's getting on game.
You know what else is acting better now?
Cracker Battle.
I've yet to go back to Cracker Barrel,
which I'm going to do sooner rather than later.
Always love to see success.
Always.
And that's where we started the show the way we did.
I was just noticing today all this talk about,
the Fed and what they're going to do and they are nothing. There's and again, nothing personal.
We don't know these people. They think that, you know, we all think we're wonderful and important,
but they're not the economy, not even close. And when you go to the store today and buy a t-shirt,
well, somebody, number one, made that shirt, somebody delivered that shirt.
I'm going to see Rush again next week.
I told you I'm going to see him a bunch of times.
I just ordered two shorts for me and my friend.
Somebody made that shirt.
Rush, the band made some money off that shirt.
They delivered it to me.
Somebody made that.
That's the economy all the way around.
Not, quarter point this, quarter point that.
Not.
it's the greatest economy ever.
It's this, it's that.
Give me a break.
Do you know the greatest economy ever,
Trump, since he came into the office,
is averaging like 40,000 new jobs a month, maybe 50?
That sucks.
But it's the greatest ever.
Anyway, enough for him.
I just wanted to make a very big point today
because all the talk about importance and this and that
and they are just forgetting us
and if you notice these ads, they've been running like crazy,
you notice them on TV,
you're getting texts on them,
what they're going to do for us.
Imagine how our lives are going to change
because somebody's going to be elected.
What the hell is that have they ever done for us?
You tell me,
The farmers are getting billions from Trump because he screwed them.
They're just coming out even.
And I can go on and on.
Okay, we're done there.
Back on the markets.
We're an earnings season.
I have yet to go through Google's numbers, but they're slam the stock.
I've yet to go through Microsoft numbers, but they're rallying the stock.
I've yet to go through Fortinet and serve it.
Just a lot of jello moving on the plate.
And as I told you, there were a bunch of movers.
today, I can't wait to jump through them to see what we can find.
The big indices remain in range.
The small and mid-caps continue to underperform.
The semis have been coming on, and the AI has been better.
But from trashings to the downside, did I forget to tell you the transports were down
over 500 today?
Because of Landstar being down 30 bucks, J.B. Hunt, 10 bucks.
C.H. Robinson down 18.
That ain't no hill for a climber.
So stay tuned.
It's going to be an interesting ride.
And listen, the Dems are going to win the house.
Senate's up for grabs.
Ain't going to matter to markets.
Just remember, it will be gridlock.
No matter what, if the Dems have the House and Senate,
it doesn't matter what they put up there.
It doesn't matter.
Why?
It's called the veto pen.
and I gather the president will be running out of pens if they try to go too far.
And as we said to you, as much as we can't stand this Republican Party,
these Democrats are loony tunes.
Absolute loony tunes.
My favorite is the wealth tax.
Yeah, we're taxing you, 39%.
If you live in New York City, you're a lot of.
53 percent. Oh, and by the way, you have too much money. We're now going to tax you on that wealth,
whether you are flush with cash or not. Oh, but don't worry, you can pay it off over a couple of
years. What do they say, stupid is as stupid does? Not to mention, unfortunately, there's a lot of
them on the left that keeps saying Israel is apartheid, and they couldn't even spell the word,
dumbasses. So, range bound, better, but not the housing stocks, not a lot of retail, not the
transports today, not at all. And the semis that are bouncing, bouncing in an overall bear,
short-term bull. That can change in a nanosecond. More new yearly lows and new yearly highs.
Advanced declines were better today. We'll give it that. We'll look them over when we get done with show.
Hope you appreciate how we came at you today. If we were running for office, the moniker and the motto would start and finish with, you're the economy. Not us.
We believe in you, not us.
We're just going to set the table and get the hell out of your way.
That would be us.
Wouldn't that be nice?
Oh, by the way, and balance budgets.
You know, the things we have to do?
Oh, and by the way, no corruption.
You know, the things we can't do?
Have a great evening.
Drive carefully.
Hey, I'll be on with Liz Clayman tomorrow in Fox Business.
Network, 3 o'clock hour, check it out.
And until tomorrow, make sure
you hug your family, hug your children, hug your pet.
Thanks for joining.
Peace out all. Good night.
