Starting point is 00:00:31 Investor's Edge with Gary Coltbaum. Straight talk about you and your money. Now from the BizTalk Studios, here is Gary Cultbaum. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. I'm Gary Colbom, your host. A thanks of being with us today. Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen. Happy that you are listening.
Starting point is 00:00:50 It is Monday the 21st, 2000, oh January, by the way, and 25. Thanks for joining. Hope you had a good weekend. Actually, hope you had a good three-day weekend. By the way, it's Tuesday, right? not Monday. Gary, all that travel. Ladies and gentlemen,
Starting point is 00:01:09 this is serious talk on everything that affects you. We'll do the markets. Everything that affects the markets. The economy. Your job. Your industry. Everything that matters. The words out of D.C.,
Starting point is 00:01:29 and in case you do not know, and you have your head in the sand, the words are coming out very different, starting with yesterday, and out of the get-go, we're going to cover a few things. But first, if you do not get this radio show in your city, we'll post it at garyk.com. We'll also post it on a Twitter feed, which is now X. And if you don't follow us on X, you should. And if you'd like to email us, just be nice.
Starting point is 00:01:56 So let me just do a few things. Number one. We, for a very long time, have been pulling no punches on Joe Biden, who is now the previous president, as I take a swick of water, and a cough. There was a reason for that. the combination of the media covering up and he lying all the time couldn't take it and we called him out on it
Starting point is 00:02:45 on top of that in plain sight in plain sight the media covered up massive corruption by his family they would actually say there's nothing there Even though there was text saying he's the big guy and money changing hands.
Starting point is 00:03:13 And I think in the mid-20s of millions that the family received all kinds of money from nefarious places. Joe Biden pardoned himself. He didn't pardon his family. He pardoned himself. That's what he did. That's all. Now, what I hear is, if they ever did go up in front of testimony, you can't take the fifth anymore. That's what I hear.
Starting point is 00:03:53 But it just goes to show you everything we said about him was right, the corruption. Just so you know, they got $20 some odd million, his family from these places. Never worked for it, just like his son. so we pardoned his son and the rest of his family and we think he just plain sucks and we think the media sucks because if they did their job oh in plain sight next we're done with him
Starting point is 00:04:24 almost Donald Trump we very much disagree with his pardons the January 6 people that were convicted or pled guilty. We disagree with him saying they are hostages.
Starting point is 00:04:45 And he actually said they were hostages in front of people that were hostages. We very much disagree. Now, we do believe some of them should have got commuted or parted, that the justice went overboard. but not a all of them but hey
Starting point is 00:05:13 I don't run the country which takes me to the next point I actually put out a little tweet saying Joe Biden is so illogical just being logical will change the playing field just being logical would change the playing field.
Starting point is 00:05:42 Joe Biden, the illogical, was just run over. I'm not going to go over every single thing Donald Trump just did with executive orders. But man, oh man, it is good to see, logic. We have told you the number one job of... a leader of a city, county, state, country is to protect the citizens, defend the citizens.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Simple as that. Joe Biden never talked about crime in these cities, never talked about what was happening in colleges to Jewish students. If you're in New York City or any of these other cities, you go into drugstores and things are locked up. The new president is talking crime. He's talking defending. And he's putting in some executive orders. And instead of me going through it, why don't you go through it and Google his executive orders? We're thrilled.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Deeming the Mexican cartels is a terrorist group. I love that because they are terrorists. They murder without thought, abandoned. They will murder kids, moms, dads, young, old. If you drive through an area that they don't like you being there, they're just murder you. The DEI versus merit. I've never understood DEI, but all these corporations started doing it because it came from the high. well all these corporations are getting away from DEI because you have a new boss in town
Starting point is 00:07:47 and I love the fact Trump is talking a word I talk and that is merit these companies do not want to hire somebody because they looked a certain way or sounded a certain way they want to hire the best that's going to benefit them what a concept. What a concept. So we're getting away from that. Love it. And of course, there'll be others that still go with it, and that's fine and dandy. Everybody, every company gets to choose, but coming from the top. And then there's a government worker freeze. Yay, just so you know, they make a ton of money the pensions are a joke
Starting point is 00:08:37 there's too many there's overlap we're finding out that like 60% of the offices are empty he also came out and said you're going back to work you're going back to the office if he don't like it tough that a huge percentage of them were out of the office good
Starting point is 00:08:53 we like all this what a concept a little bit of logic and of course the logic that we have absolutely no chance of getting wealth taxes, a higher capital gains tax, a higher corporate tax, unrealized capital gains tax talk about insane,
Starting point is 00:09:26 and any number of other things that they were promoting. And now we're going to get, lower taxes or right where we are. And then there's the Doge. We hear Vivek has left the Doge and is going to run for Ohio governor. So we'll see how that goes. But if they are ever to do the things we've said needs to be done,
Starting point is 00:09:57 streamline government. It's okay to have government. We don't complain against government. We complain against bad government. We complain about inefficient government. We complain about $2 trillion deficits. We complained that they gave $350 billion of our tax dollars to John Podesta for climate. By the way, if I hear somebody say global warming, because all I can tell you is I was in New York City this weekend, there was no global warming.
Starting point is 00:10:23 I'm hearing back in Florida right now, there's no global warming. 58 degrees, I think, right now, is 42 earlier today. yippy y'a so we'll keep covering it as we move forward we will tell you where we agree where we disagree we wish the new president well
Starting point is 00:10:46 just like we wish Joe Biden well when he came in and disappointed us for four years oh and the border what do we tell you here it's so logical secure borders immigration's fine who's against immigration but you got to do it controlled
Starting point is 00:11:07 oh they're on that that's up next and then the markets strong day I'm Gary this is the one only Investors Edge Hi I'm Gary Kalpom hosted a nationally syndicated radio show Investors Edge we're not just handsome radio people we manage investors money for a living specializing in fee-based discretionary money management

I recently spoke with IBM's new director of research, Jake Mbeta. We discussed his vision for the future of quantum computing.
Starting point is 00:12:46 At IBM research, what we always do is answer what is the future of computing, whether it's coming up with new algorithms, coming up with better AI, coming up with quantum, or coming up with just how do different accelerators go together. It's our DNA to answer the question of what is the future. Isn't it a perfect problem for IBM because you kind of need to have a legacy of building stuff? Yes. Building actual physical machines. Yeah, it's why I came to IBM.
Starting point is 00:13:16 I wanted the experience, the culture of building hard things that others have not done before. Where do you imagine we are in the timeline of this technology? There will come a point when it will mature. Right? Yeah. My cell phone is a mature technology at this point. How far are we from that point with Kondo? By 2029, we'll build the first fault-tolerant quantum computer.
Starting point is 00:13:43 That is one that can run a very, very large. large problem. To learn how IBM is building the future of computing, visit IBM.com slash quantum. Starting point is 00:15:06 You're listening to. Hey, this promises to be fun. Investor's Edge. The last bastion of quality programming. With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. So just remember for three years
Starting point is 00:15:32 They told you the border was secure while they opened it up They lied The media covered up for them Missing children all over the place The media didn't say a word While under Trump They were 24-7 It was not until the poll numbers on immigration
Starting point is 00:15:53 Heading into the election year Were a horror show for Biden Did they change their mind? They also were a poll numbers. lied about Kamala Harris being the Bordersar. She was the Bordersar. The media lied about that too.
Starting point is 00:16:07 CBS had a reporter on two years ago saying the Borders are Kamala Harris and that same CBS reporter came out and said, no she wasn't the Borders are. They're just BS artists. It's a shame and now they're going to go after
Starting point is 00:16:23 Trump like you wouldn't believe. Trump sat in the Oval Office in front of the media for I don't know how long with executive orders. He spent more time in front of the media than I think Biden over the last two or three years. So Biden can go leave, collect his millions from his family. Best of luck to you. We're going to secure the border now, keep taxes low, hopefully do something on regulations,
Starting point is 00:16:50 and then get the hell out of the way. Then get the hell out of the way. It's pretty simple. Then get the hell out of the way. I turned on MSNBC during the inauguration. It was a funeral. And they were mad. They said that having those billionaires up there is bad.
Starting point is 00:17:16 Really? People that create massive wealth for others and technological advances, they're bad. And then, of course, the media again, Elon Musk put his hand over his heart and then threw his arm out, meaning my heart goes out to you. They said it was a Nazi salute. Could have been, maybe, possibly. They've ignored. You can take any other politician,
Starting point is 00:17:45 plenty of times they're caught with their arm out like that, the Hal Hitler. But no, they don't say a word about that. They went after Elon Musk. So don't expect anything from the media. They're going to be the same old, same all. We'll cover the truth. and again, all we're looking for
Starting point is 00:18:04 the Feden, the citizenry, protect the citizenry, fight crime, crime shouldn't pay, put the people in jail, keep taxes low, regulations are fine, but don't make them onerous,
Starting point is 00:18:27 and watch us thrive. That's all. That's it. That's all. Now, I do know Trump is probably going to go overboard and do things he doesn't need to do because he's him. We'll see what happens. I'm not sure I have anything else I need to cover right now, but as we move forward, we'll get into it. And you don't have to email me on the pardons. Donald Trump is wrong to do a blanket pardon for all of them.
Starting point is 00:18:58 That's all. I would say to his face and then tell him, boy, your golf courses are good. Okay, where do I want to start? Well, it's simple. The Dow today, I'm going to use percentages for a change, was up 1.23% today. A very good day. The S&P was up 0.88% today. The NASDAQ was up 0.68% today.
Starting point is 00:19:35 The NASDAQ was up 0.6%. 4%, the NASDAQ 100 was up 0.58%, but the mid caps were at 1.71% and the small caps was up 1.96%. Advanced declines, what do we tell you? Well, they were really good today. And where was the money flowing again? Well, interest rates were down again and the dollar was swatted. Our dollar against other currencies was smoke to the downside today. The reason that happens is rates come down, dollar comes down. If the dollar comes down, go look it up. Our multinationals do better.
Starting point is 00:20:19 And that's why you're Dow and stuff. Since last Monday, when interest rates topped, we have had a V-shaped move up in all the areas we were telling you to avoid for a long while. and that is materials, industrials, building products, some of the transports, and the like.
Starting point is 00:20:43 If you want to go look at the XLB, this thing is ramped back. It crashed. And it is ramped back up halfway. No major index is at highs. But the S&P is back above the 50-day moving average. Did it on Friday. The NASDAQ above the 50-day moving average, the NASDAQ 100 above, and the Dow finally back above today, on the back of, what did we say to you?
Starting point is 00:21:16 Caterpillar, up 13 today. What's Caterpillar? It's machinery. You can call it whatever you want, but it's under the industrials, machinery, and all that crap. and what else is going along for the ride dear you remember united rentals how we were telling you was it crashed well since monday that's only gone from 670 to 790 including one sixty dollar day when they bought out somebody
Starting point is 00:21:47 and as we said caterpillar uh since monday well uh 350 to 398 the old high was 418 in november what's going on the 10 year yield The market follows it big time. Hit 4.81, it's down to 4.57. And that's done it. And then you can add in a little bit of Trump. Trump mentioned Oracle today. Stock has been dead.
Starting point is 00:22:23 Oracle up $11 today. Something about some deal with Oracle and AI and something like that. He mentioned going to Mars. Guess what? Let's see. Rocket Lab, RKLB, money losing spacecraft, whatever, up 7 today to 31. And by the way, that's a new high with a $16 billion market cap that loses money. So the Trump effect is also out there.
Starting point is 00:22:57 How about intuitive machines provide space services for space exploration up 4 today to 23? 3.5 billion market cap for this money loser. Themes. What does Trump come out with next? I have no idea. Overnight futures were strong and then he mentioned he's thinking about a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico and the market dove overnight. And then as we got close to the open, we gapped up today. And that's that.
Starting point is 00:23:35 So very good advance declines. Very good move today. we'll tell you what didn't. That's up next on this one only investors' edge. Hello, hello, I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of Smart Talks with IBM. I recently spoke with IBM's new director of research, Jake Gambata. We discussed his vision for the future of quantum computing. See website for full terms and conditions. America is talking. Investors Edge. He's got to be pleased with that. The crowd is just on its feet here. He's a Cinderella boy.
Starting point is 00:27:15 With Gary Coltbaum. It comes highly recommended. You're going to feel better if you talk to him. All right. Let's stay with the markets. Netflix. Reported earnings. Are you ready?
Starting point is 00:27:45 Not making this up. They pretty much met estimates on the earnings front. revenues were up, let's see, 16% year over year. They gave downside guidance for earnings per share this quarter. Expectations were $6.5.58. That's not good. Right? Revenues were supposed to be $10.5 for the coming quarter.
Starting point is 00:28:18 They're only going to do $10.4. That's not great. but for the whole year they kind of said the upper end of guidance and then they mentioned something else that did the trick
Starting point is 00:28:37 Netflix said something to the effect of while all their numbers are headed lower they said that global streaming paid net ads in the quarter
Starting point is 00:28:53 expectations were 5 million. They're saying 19 million. So I'm going to have to pull that apart. How do you lower your numbers, but your paid net skyrocketed for the quarter? Nevertheless, Netflix closed at $869, $978 in the aftermath. market up $109 in the aftermarket.
Starting point is 00:29:30 And this stock has been under pressure as of late. So that will be very nice for Netflix in the morning. We'll see how the night goes. The stock very often will move on how many subs. And that was a good sub number. Dang. NASDAQ 100s up a little bit in the aftermarket. nothing much
Starting point is 00:29:55 anything else I got in the aftermarket that matters to me C-gate is flat UALB and the airlines have been strong it's up about 3% I think that's about it in the after market that is of note
Starting point is 00:30:13 tomorrow Johnson and Johnson and Procter and Gamble in the Dow make that Travelers also Later in the week, GE and Union Pacific, CSX, a couple of more airlines, Alaska Air, American Air, Texas Instruments, Intuitive Surgical and Two More Downames, Verizon, and American Express. Strength today. Another good day for the banks. Though I must tell you, Goldman Sachs was down $16 right at the open in the morning, finished up nine. don't know what happened there.
Starting point is 00:30:55 What else was strong today? The power generation companies, those companies. What else was strong? Well, let's see. As I mentioned, United Rentals, Caterpillar Deer, Carlisle, Parker Hanofin, those stocks were strong. Medical's had a pretty decent day.
Starting point is 00:31:22 Some of the medical equipment stuff, had a decent day I see retail was okay Dillards the stock that hardly trades it's so weird they need to do something different with Dillards it trades like a hundred thousand shares the day earnings a bit down every quarter and sales down every quarter but that broke out of a one-year range today on light volume though but that's Dillards what else that I see today that was of note it was just a good day. Gold strong, rounding a big range, symbol GLD, and the gold miners got back above the 50-day moving average for the first time since early November today, off of the move in gold.
Starting point is 00:32:09 But the story will be tomorrow will be Netflix. Very strong move. And I wonder if that has to do with the WWE or didn't they also do that scam boxing? That was a gigantic scam. What was that Tyson and the guy with the beard? His brother is Logan Paul. I don't know his name. Oh, Jake Paul. Thank you. Appreciate that. So anyway, we'll see tomorrow. And by the way, Netflix is up $114 now in the aftermarket. And I believe it's top. 12 as far as what it means to the NASDAQ 100. Somewhere in there. Anything else that stick out? You bounced United Health, 15 bucks.
Starting point is 00:33:02 That's the managed care. That had a better day. That stock just dropped 100 and some odd bucks. The transports, as I mentioned. But just since last Monday, again, direct correlation between interest rates plunging, the dollar plunging. Market going higher and let's throw in some Trump. But that is yet to be told because we don't know exactly what he's going to do or get done.
Starting point is 00:33:32 And they're still very, very, very, very tight in the house. They are not up by a lot. They lose a couple of Republicans in the house. See you. Netflix up even more. Boy, they like the sub number. 986, up 117 in the aftermarket. And I got to tell you, we just made like 120 bucks on that stock.
Starting point is 00:34:01 I was so happy, and that'll be above where I sold. Darn it. But believe me, that thing was breaking down but good. I would have given back a lot, and we don't like to do things like that here. we're in the midst of monstrous earning season now we basically take a step back on anything that reports in the next week or so and sometimes they will move without us but that's the nature of the beast we do not believe
Starting point is 00:34:31 in tempting fate in the marketplace with gaps to the upside or downside we would have loved to know that Netflix was going to bust to the upside. We don't know what's next, but a lot to come as we move forward in earning season. And now the era of Trump, he's got two years before the midterms. Less than two years, right? And we'll see what they get done. I love that he's hitting the ground running with a lot of, logic. Just remember, ladies and gentlemen, logic. And I've given up. I've given up on the media.
Starting point is 00:35:26 I was hoping they were going to maybe come out and just report the news. No, that ain't happening. That ain't happening. They never used the word liar for Biden. I saw CNN use it about 12 times on Trump in about three minutes. They really do disgust me because all we want is fair, and I'm not talking about opinion people. There's opinion people on the right and left, let them opinionize. I'm talking about the people that report the news. Anyway, we'll do the job for them. Good or bad, because we have no bias, but we wish them well. I like some of his appointees. I love Tom Homan, who, by the way, is the boarders are. They'll be tough on it.
Starting point is 00:36:28 And I'm not sure everything's going to be perfect or everything's going to be right, but you've got to control the border. And then let people come in the right way. What a concept. What a concept. A country that has a border and prevents people from coming in that may do harm to the country. You do know there was a clear lack of vetting. by the Biden administration. You do know that, right?
Starting point is 00:37:05 A clear lack of vetting. You've read the stories, right? That this country would let somebody in here that had a criminal past and then commits crimes here and nothing ever happens to them and then their last crime is murder and then O,
Starting point is 00:37:30 and then come out and state, Well, you know, logic. Up next. What else we got for you? I'm Gary. This is the one only investor said. Hello, hello. I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO, Arvin Krishna. And I asked him, how can companies use AI to its fullest potential to create smarter business?
Starting point is 00:38:22 My one advice to that. Pick areas you can scale. Don't pick the shiny little toys on the side. For example. If anybody has more than 10% of what they had for customer service 10 years ago, they're already five years behind it. If anybody is not using AI to make their developers who write software 30% more productive today, with the goal of being 70% more productive,
Starting point is 00:38:53 Yeah. Wow. So we are not asking our clients to be the first experiment on it. We say you can leverage what we did. We're happy to bring out all our learnings, including what needs to change in the process, because the biggest change is not technology, is getting people to accept that there's a different way to do things. Starting point is 00:41:13 A small and mids did better. Another drop in yields. And a very big drop in the dollar. versus other currencies. And in case you don't know, markets treat that as friendly, unless the dollar crashes, of course. That would be a problem. The semiconductors, I'm not going to sweat it just yet,
Starting point is 00:41:41 but they were up at what time today, 2047, about 115 finished up 68. I'm going to say no biggie to that and I will tell you that they gaped the semis up on 1-6 I bought some got stopped out three days later
Starting point is 00:42:04 now they V-shaped it back up back to where I think I bought yeah just about right but they did not finish that great today we'll see what happens the new yearly high list is starting to pick up. As usual, the first things that broke out, best looking.
Starting point is 00:42:27 At this point in time, we're just sitting looking for setups on things about to move out. We've been harping on certain names and we're just waiting to see what happens. But what we won't do is get in front of a freight train and that being whether earnings are going to be reacting well to or the other way. around it. And to be clear, markets just simply like lower yields. By the way, oil dropped over a buck today also, which does not hurt. Why does the market like lower yields? It's just looser for equities. It enables companies to float bonds at lower yields, so cost less. It enables you to buy a house at a mortgage lower.
Starting point is 00:43:23 And over a 30-year period, even though I'm a big believer, the 30-year is a scam, I think all mortgages should be 15 years. By the way, the reason I say that, go look, go get an amortization table for a 15 and a 30, the same numbers. You're paying down your principal from day one on the 15.
Starting point is 00:43:48 You're paying no principal down for like the first 15 years. on a 30. They're getting all your money up front. So you're making a higher payment. You're making a higher payment, but a lot of it's going towards your principal, which is your money.
Starting point is 00:44:14 Next up, I just want to do this. I don't do it often. In case you don't know, electric vehicles, the Nissan Aria, Lexus RZ, Kia EV6, Kia NeroEV, Kia EV-9. How about a Jeep Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid? How about a Jeep Waggnear S electric?
Starting point is 00:44:40 How about a Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrid? How about a Honda Prolog electric? How about a Dodge Hornet hybrid? How about a Chrysler Pacifica hybrid? How about it Acura ZDX electric? Oh, the rest of these electric. Toyota BZ4X. a Ford Mach E, a Ford F-150 electric, a Volkswagen ID.4 electric.
Starting point is 00:45:09 They all have 0% financing for 72 months, just letting you know. On this list, I think there's only one that's not electric. A Nissan Morano. And I must tell you, the prices for cars have really gone up. Wow. I don't know how long that's going to last. But just letting you know 0% for 72 months
Starting point is 00:45:32 I wonder why it's a lot of electric oh that you know why ain't selling so well oh that's right And in case you don't know whether Ford That I believe lost $10 billion on electric cars Just remember they were politically
Starting point is 00:45:50 Forced Ford and GM to do all that And now they're not The mandates are gone I can promise you they'll never say it out loud, there is a sigh of relief in corporate America about all these freaking mandates. Oh, he also took us out of the Paris climate thing, Trump did. Do you know why?
Starting point is 00:46:22 There's nobody complying with it. The last I looked, there was one small country complying with it. And China, yeah, they're doing green things, but you know how many coal-fired things they're building? Anyway, good to see. Some logic. Got to be tough. And now I'm really interested to see what happens on the foreign front. Russia, Ukraine. We know about what's happened with Israel and Hamas. By the way, the Hamas wimps. were dressed in medical garb when they were in hiding. Now that there's a ceasefire,
Starting point is 00:47:16 oh, they're out now with their guns and their masks and their Hamas flags and all that bull crap now. Big shots. I got news from the Israeli women would have kicked their asses if they didn't have a weaponry on that October 7th. A bunch of, I can't use the word, by the way. I'm very interested to see how that plays out because leave no doubt, at least on the talk, it's going to be a lot tougher here. And it may have a lot more meaning to some of these, well, to Putin, to Iran and the Mullahs there.
Starting point is 00:48:02 That'll get very interesting, and I think very quickly. So we will keep you on top of it. The big indices are back above the 50-day moving average. As long as they're above good below, we'll let you know. Big story, Netflix and the aftermarket. We'll see how it opens tomorrow. You have a great evening drive carefully. When you get home, do like we do.
Starting point is 00:48:27 Quite simple. Make sure you hug your family. Make sure you hug your children. They will feel better. You'll feel better. I promise. Stay well. Be well.
