And welcome once again to Investors Edge. I'm Gary Colbom, your host. A thanks of being with us today. Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening.
Starting point is 00:00:51 It is May. And you know how I know it's May? It is hot as hell here in Orlando, Florida. I mean, I think it's 90 out there. It's one of those days. Hey, thanks for being with us today. Ladies and gentlemen, this is serious talk on everything that affects you and your wallet, your money and your jobs and your employment,
Starting point is 00:01:13 the sector you're in, the industry you're in, the markets, and everything else under the sun. And we don't play footsie. This is serious talk. Every now and then some comedy injected, but not so much comedy right now for obvious reasons. I'm sure you understand. And if you'd like to listen to this show, we'll post it at garyk.com.
Starting point is 00:01:50 We'll also post it on our Twitter feed, which is X. It's now X. And if you'd like to join us on X, follow us. All you've got to do is put our name in and follow us there at X. And if you'd like to email me, we just want to. you to be on the nice side. Simple is that. We'll do the markets in a few minutes and we'll cover them the whole show. But as you know, we did the beginning of the show yesterday, got a lots of response. There is only one logical question to come from what's going on in these universities.
Starting point is 00:02:32 When's all said and done? We now know they're organized. We now know there's some the Ferious ass clowns, racist anti-Semitic Jew-hating ass clowns that are doing a lot of from up high. To what extent, I guess we're not going to know. We saw that they are zombies, puppets. Because when anybody would try to interview them, they all said the same thing. They were told to say, I'm not the media relations person. go find them. They had to be told that. Some interviewers were trying to ask what river and what sea, and they didn't know or did not answer. What are you against? They didn't know or they did not answer.
Starting point is 00:03:34 The ignorance of these people is just gargantuan, but put them aside for the second. Put them aside. what do you do now because just so you know there were a lot of arrests I gather there's some suspensions but I am not hearing about students and people that beat the crap out of others blocked others from getting through
Starting point is 00:04:11 holding them captive one person was blocked into a corner and would not be let out a Jewish student. They're calling for the death of the students and Jewish people. The only logical question because I'm Mr. Logic. If these impotent, impotent schools do nothing. And let these vile misfits that I, if I was one of the students,
Starting point is 00:04:54 they'd be in the hospital right now if somebody try to hold me captive. My buddy John Layfield, JBL from W.W.E. Fame, the wrestling god is finishing maneuver, is the close line from hell. I know exactly what it looks like, and they would have got the close line from hell, so that leads me to the one simple question, most logical question from Mr. Logic.
Starting point is 00:05:26 Are you going to let those students back in class? So the Jewish student victims that were victims of all this are in the class with them? Is that what you're going to do? Huh. Just thinking out loud, ladies and gentlemen, I suspect they're not done. You know who's screwed. Are you ready? the Democratic National Convention, because they hate Biden, these people.
Starting point is 00:06:04 They loathe Biden. They actually think Biden is siding with Israel, but Biden hasn't done anything except when the day of October 7th he opened his yapper. And just so you know, we've been sending money for Israel to defend them for ages. It's not like Biden's creating that, so that's still going on. Biden has been silent. Imagine all this going on, and he was loud as loud can be,
Starting point is 00:06:32 and they hate Biden. They're going to show up at the Democratic National Convention, and that's going to be a panic. That's going to be fun to watch. And all I keep asking, I don't know if you saw UCLA. The vile Marxist, racist, anti-Semites were beating the crap out of people
Starting point is 00:06:55 with boards and pipes. UCLA told the UCLA police to stand down while all this was going on. Where's Gavin Newsom, the governor? Where is whatever her name is, that is the mayor of L.A.? Another lefty. Where is any of them? So let me just say, they suck. These are not leaders.
Starting point is 00:07:24 These are wimps. They might as well put on diapers. They're little baby wimps. oh, we're going to get elected or not. Who gives a crap about students at universities? And the logical question again. If you're a Jewish student, how do you go into a class? How do you go into a class and see a person that threaten your life?
Starting point is 00:07:53 And how do you not jump over the desk and beat the crap out of them? Here's my hope. That there's major class action lawsuits. against these schools, that they have to pay up such big time that they're going to feel the pain and they're going to stop and stop hiring crazies. You should have heard what some of the faculty had to say. They interviewed some faculty. They should be in a rubber room, in a corner of a rubber room, which is actually around,
Starting point is 00:08:30 I think, and straightjacketed. I watched a couple of Jewish students interviewed. One of the girls were scared crapless. One of the guys sounded like me. Let him touch me. And late last night, you know what ended up happening? Not Jewish students, but some Jewish people finally had enough. And they went and was just ripping down the encampments.
Starting point is 00:09:05 And I ask again, to all of you, whether you love them or hate them, where the hell is the freaking president of the United States when Jewish students at universities are being threatened with their lives on video? It's not like we need to find any proof. They've had no shame. They put it on their phones. They post them like Hamas did.
Starting point is 00:09:32 Murdering and kidnapping and raping people. What are those Jewish students going to do if they see one of these people one of them there's a bunch of them in the class now let me finish up by saying in case you do not know i know you see like 30 or 40 universities where this is now happening but i am letting you know it is the minority of people it is an organized movement and they're very good at it they've done it before in different avenues different venues different reasons they're very good at it they're communist marxist socialist control freaks They were burning American flags. They're haters of America. They're haters of anything democracy.
Starting point is 00:10:20 They're insane. So we're just letting you know, 99 points, some odd, whatever percent of the people are just doing their thing. And you know how you know? Just go out. Go to a restaurant tonight and see people just dining out. If one of the NBA games is there, you'll see 18,000 people enjoying a basketball game. I did not enjoy the Knicks game at the end last night. They gave away a game to win the four out of seven series against Philly.
Starting point is 00:10:47 Go to a park and just see people walk in their dogs. Go visit your friends. 99.9% that's the good news. The bad news is these people get some big freaking headlines. And that's our take. Up next. Head on a swivel. That's today's market.
Starting point is 00:11:12 The outcome is what matters. I'm Gary. This is the one only investor's edge. Hi, I'm Gary Kalbaum, hosted a nationally syndicated radio show Investors Edge. Hello, hello, I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of Smart Talks with IBM. I recently spoke with IBM's new director of research, Jake Mbata. We discussed his vision for the future of quantum computing. At IBM research, what we always do is answer what is the future of computing, whether it's coming up with new algorithms, coming up with better AI, coming up with quantum, or coming up with just how do different accelerators go together. It's our DNA to answer the question.
Starting point is 00:13:04 of what is the future. Isn't it a perfect problem for IBM because you kind of need to have a legacy of building stuff? Yes. Building actual physical machines. Yeah, it's why I came to IBM. I wanted the experience, the culture of building hard things that others have not done before.
Starting point is 00:13:26 Where do you imagine we are in the timeline of this technology? There will come a point when it will mature. Right? My cell phone is a mature technology at this point. How far are we from that point with quantum? By 2029, we'll build the first fault-tolerant quantum computer. That is one that can run a very, very large, large problem. To learn how IBM is building the future of computing,

Starting point is 00:15:46 With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. Okay. So, for those of you, and this is not making fun of you, that own the Vanguard S&P fund for the last 30 years, you couldn't give a crap what happened today in the markets. and I couldn't blame you. For those of you that are in 10 different mutual funds, and hopefully they weren't the ARC funds, and they're working for you,
Starting point is 00:16:30 doesn't matter what we're going to say to you. And that's cool. Today, the Federal Reserve, Jay Powell, and you know what I think of him, and again, nothing personal. I never met him. I don't know him. I'm sure he's a nice man, a good father, a good husband. Maybe he's a grandfather. He may be the sweetest man on earth, but he sucks as a central banker. He's the worst ever by far. And that's saying a lot because we had some bad ones. He had their two-day meeting wrap up where they play paper football at a long. table, space invaders, Galaga, maybe some centipede, maybe some Ms. Pac-Man, order Uber eats, and then come up with some gibberish. They came out today and they did not move their
Starting point is 00:17:43 interest rate. Their Fed funds rate and just go look what the Fed funds is. It's the most, for me, most overrated rate out there. What matters to me most is the free markets, and that's the 10-year yield. That's what you pay your mortgages on. So he did nothing. But then he had a press conference that started at 2.30. He was asked questions, and I have to tell you, I don't even want to tell you what he said. Is that okay? I don't even want to tell you what he said. Not much different. How's that? but, but when they announced the, when they made the announcement, the Dow was 38057 and dropped 100 points, 37952. That would have been, the Dow would have still been up about 13030.
Starting point is 00:18:58 I'm not making this up because at 302, the Dow was up. 525 points. On whatever he said, at the close, the Dow was only up 87 points. So a gargantuan ramp for a day up and a gargantuan drop. The NASDAQ had a rough going in the morning. In fact, at 2.30, it was 15705. Actually, it was up 50, but the semiconductors were trashed. And once the announcement came, it went to 15640. So we were only down 17 points, no big deal. At 302 p.m., we're at 15926. And I'm not making this up. We were up. Let me make sure this right. 15926 would be 321 minus 52. Let's call it 270.
Starting point is 00:20:19 270. The NASDAQ finished down 52. It dropped 320 points in the last hour. The NASDAQ 100, let's just go to the high of 17667, which had it up at one time today. Let's see, 350. That would have been 228 points at 302, closed down 122. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which was a misery all day, which was at 4528 at the lows right after the announcement, which would have had it down about 143, rallied up.
Starting point is 00:21:13 the 4660. Earlier the semiconductor index was down 190 and went down to flat, finished down 165. A gargantuan ramp and an ugly drop into the clothes. And I consider myself to have a real strong stomach for markets because I got to tell you, I was in the flash crash. You know what the flash crash was?
Starting point is 00:21:49 You had stocks dropping 15% in a matter of like a minute or two. This was years and years ago. And just get them back before you can say boo. But you know how many stops were hit? And I don't think they ever came out with the reason for the flash crash. I was in 1987 in Albuquerque, New Mexico for the 87 crash. That night I was so scared. I went to the bookstore and got the book,
Starting point is 00:22:16 The Great Depression of the 1990s, but a guy named Ravi Batra, where, of course, the book was ridiculously wrong. I was in that, though I was a penny stockbroker at that time. And I still remember the president of company saying, it didn't affect us. I've seen it all.
Starting point is 00:22:42 2000 to 03, the NASDAQ, I don't know if you know this, dropped 80% from the highs. I've seen the banking crisis. I don't know if you know this. But Wachovia, countrywide, bear Stearns, Merrill, Lehman, a few others went out of business. Citigroup. The price of Citigroup right now is 61 bucks. No, it isn't.
Starting point is 00:23:12 It's $6.10. They did a one-for-10 split. City Group is still from 2008, down from 570 with that one-for-10 split. 57 bucks down to 610. I've seen it all. So one day whipsaw does not drive me up a wall. Why? Because a one day whipsaw will not necessarily change patterns that are already at hand. And I think what happened at the close today, regardless, the patterns of the market took over. And the patterns have been suspect. And the patterns of the market. took over. Now we hear whatever happens on Fed Day, the opposite tomorrow. I don't go into that crap. We're just letting you know the outcome today is what matters most. I will forget when I do my scans tonight what happened intraday. And up next, we'll tell you what we're thinking about the outcome. I'm Gary. This is the one only Investor's Edge. Hello, hello. I'm Malcolm
Starting point is 00:24:37 Gladwell, host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna, and I asked him, how can companies use AI to its fullest potential to create smarter business? My one advice to them, pick areas you can scale. Don't pick the shiny little toys on the side. For example. If anybody has more than 10% of what they had for customer service 10 years ago, they're already five years behind it. If anybody is not using AI to make their developers who write software 30% more productive today, with the goal of being 70% more productive. Yeah. So we are not asking our clients to be the first experiment on it.
Starting point is 00:25:28 We say, you can leverage what we did. We're happy to bring out all our learnings, including what needs to change in the process, because the biggest change is not technology. It's getting people to accept that there's a different way to do things. To listen to the full conversation, visit IBM.com slash smart talks. Want to earn extra income for your business? Hey, it's Ryan Sechrest for Albertsons and Safeway. It's stockup savings time now through March 31st. Spring in for store-wide deals and earn four times of points.

Starting point is 00:26:59 America is talking. Investors Edge. He's got to be pleased with that. The crowd is just on his feet here. He's a Cinderella boy. With Gary Colbomb. It comes highly recommended. You're going to feel better if you talk to him.
Starting point is 00:27:14 Okay. By the way, I'm just watching a video right now of gaze, LBGTQ. They're yelling, Hamas are freedom fighters and heroes. Hamas beheads
Starting point is 00:27:45 and disembowels gays. We'll hang them from the highway, will stone them in the middle of the street, for everybody to applaud. And as I have said to you on this show,
Starting point is 00:28:06 and I always, and I've said to my wife earlier, it's just tick-tac-toe. I got it from a movie, and I still can't remember what movie. But you don't ever play the game of tick-tac-toe because you can't win so why even play, which means why even debate these people, why try to convince them, if they're so ill in the head
Starting point is 00:28:30 to actually back people that would murder them in a nanosecond in the most vicious way possible, you just got to punt. You just got to take a pass. And I must tell you, it's unreal. You think this can't be. You think it's like you're watching Benny Hill or the cold open of S&L and it's really not real.
Starting point is 00:28:57 It's just, I don't even know what to say. Again, 99.99% of the people are not ill, stupid, moronic, imbecilic. I move on. Starbucks. So when I started, when I got away from not knowing anything about markets and started the teachings of William O'Neill. The teachings of William O'Neill are about pattern recognition, but also you should know your companies. And what I remember I bought Home Depot,
Starting point is 00:29:45 and what I did was I used to visit three home depots when I lived in South Florida. One was, I think, in Boca, one in Pompano. I don't remember exactly where, but I would go. Starbucks. So I have been wondering, Starbucks has been in a brutal bare market. A brutal bear market. In fact, in case you don't know, Starbucks now, well, it was in September of 21, the high was, if my little finger works, 126. It closed at 74 today. So in two and a half years, the stock is down 40%. And all I can tell you is, I'm a Starbucks person.
Starting point is 00:30:44 I love their breakfast sandwiches. They're spinach and feta wrap, their reduced fat turkey bacon, and the egg white bites. I love them. I used to be an espresso guy. And their espressoes are so small, you've got to get a triple espresso because that's everybody's double. Now, I do pretty darn well financially. I still remember when buying those two things in the morning were $6.49. In Florida, they're now over nine.
Starting point is 00:31:19 In New York City, it's now over 10. And I've been thinking to myself for months, so people that may not be well off financially, are they going to stand to get a breakfast? sandwich for nine and, and by the way, the espresso's are cheap compared to some of the coffees. My wife gets this grande thing of a bob that's like seven bucks. And every time I go into a Starbucks, and I've been to a few, I ask. So what's going on? Oh, we're slower.
Starting point is 00:32:02 What do you mean? Well, we have people that always came every day that are coming three days a week. That's number one. Number two, just the movement is slower. Number three, on a busy, busy day a year ago, our lineup in the drive-through was 10, 12 cars, and we would serve them quick. Now they're five or six cars. One plus one equals two. These are the things we work on.
Starting point is 00:32:32 And it's not, when it comes to semiconductor chips, you really can't feel it. but when it comes to restaurants and retail and the like, like Lulu Lemon, I finally found out what the heck happened at Lulu Lemon. It's not a place I frequent, but the stock's been crushed, and it turns out they have a price problem. People are getting very price sensitive now in a very big way. And if a young lady can go to Target and get something, at Target for 35 bucks that Lulu Lemons charge in 90, and it's a tougher time, guess what they're
Starting point is 00:33:20 going to do? Screw you, Lulu Lemon. That's the story. Price sensitivity. And when Walmart, by the way, in case you don't know, Walmart only does, 310, 475, 70, about 650 billion in revenues with 10,500,000, 500 Walmart Sam's Club stores, so they probably have a good feel for what's going on. Walmart specifically said lower income people are really getting price sensitive now. Big time. And you can feel it, you can see it, and you can touch it. Interesting, huh? And what stocks have been in trouble as of late?
Starting point is 00:34:16 A lot of retail. Now, interesting enough, as I said to you, some restaurants have been strong. Maybe that's the more higher end people that can afford. I'm just letting you know things are getting price sensitive out there. And as I said to you, I have a bag of party chips of ruffles right in front of me here that is about two-thirds the size of the old part. party chips, but the price, I think it's a little bit higher than the old party chips. Price sensitivity.
Starting point is 00:35:00 Oh, we're going to be watching this very, very closely going forward. And when I look at retail like Estee Lauder today, down $19 on their earnings. What does Estee Lauder do? Oh, makeup, fragrance, skin care, hair care, and all that stuff. Hmm. Just thinking things over here. Just letting you know how we think, how we work. We just don't flap our gums. With technology, it's a little tougher to understand,
Starting point is 00:35:40 but I haven't told you this in a while. We've been really studying artificial intelligence, and I'm not ready to really give you a, big gigantic overview of it, maybe in the coming weeks. That's my little Starbucks story. The Dow finished up 87. It was up 525. The S&P down 17.
Starting point is 00:36:10 The S&P was up at one point today. It was 5,096. That's 78. It was up 61. The NASDAQ up down 52. NASDAQ 100, down 122. semiconductor index, the all-important semiconductor index down 165. Ew. And as we've told you, the transports are only down 44 today, but they have been miserable. And we told you
Starting point is 00:36:37 oil top recently, that at another breath day. And I'll give you the good news. The oil prices dropped another $2.75 today for Brent. So that means in the next 10 to 12 days, prices are going to come down pretty decently at the pump. Of course, they're a little slower to go down than when they go up a little bit faster. But that's not their fault. It's because you've got to wait to get the new oil in. And I can tell you, as a fact, just a ton of oil stocks have broken the 50-day and badly. So a lot of jello moving on the plate today.
Starting point is 00:37:17 And if there's anything I can take from today, I hate the fact that the semiconductors are gagging here and we're really underperforming all day and led on the way down into the close. Ouch. Up next, what else I got for you? Hey, I'm Gary. This is the one only investors' edge. Hello, hello. I'm Malcolm Gladwell,

Starting point is 00:40:31 With Gary Culper. Do you know, at the end of the Nick game yesterday, I had myself talking to my dog. I'm looking at Winston. He thinks I'm a nut, and I'm looking at Winston saying, how can they lose that game? Up six with 30 seconds to go? and the guy hits two prayers of three-pointers to win the game, and three missed foul shots would have canned the game, and three missed foul shots did it.
Starting point is 00:41:06 So we go to Game 6 in Philadelphia, and let's hope they keep the morale up. I still think the Knicks are going to win the series, but psychology for just anybody is it was supposed to be over by now. And we got to play another game. It's very tough to come back. Let's hope they are great sportsmen. And they come back and they're pissed and they get the job done.
Starting point is 00:41:35 Jalen Brunson is an MVP of MVP's. Wow. This guy Maxie for Philadelphia. What a freaking game. He scored like 48 and hit the last two shots. God bless him. By the way, the last three-pointer was from the label. Serenity now.
Starting point is 00:41:57 What else stuck out today? NVIDIA. It's the number one stock in the market, I believe. Just letting you know it closed down $34 today. And is down a few in the aftermarket. And just letting you know, and this is how crazy it is, it was down at one time today. I think, let's see if I can get the low here.
Starting point is 00:42:19 At one time today, it hit $812. It was down 50. It was down 50 at 1130. At the top, at 302, 303. It was only down two. Finish down 34. We don't own any semis. As you know, on March 11th, we sold Nvidia, AMD, and Taiwan Semiconductor.
Starting point is 00:42:55 We wish we sold them on March 8th, and we really would have. But the big reversal drop on March 8th that Friday was like two hours. It was all two hours. And to make big decisions on great winners, In that period of time, so we missed the high by a little bit and did okay, especially AMD, which by the way was down another $15 today, down from $227. We sold it above $200, and that brings me to a very important point. I am telling you that in the days leading up to the high in AMD and until now, it is being talked up. Like there's no tomorrow as the next one, the big one, the best one, the AI one, and if you're not in and this and that,
Starting point is 00:43:53 while the institution sold it down for 9% today on their earnings, which were pedestrian at best. Thus, lessons. Be careful about what's said. The market itself is the end all be all. not somebody's opinion Broadcom was down 57 today Super Micro which is not a semi but is big time AI related down 120 bucks on their earnings
Starting point is 00:44:27 and boy where they were trying to talk things up and whatever the reason is they got talked down oils are simple oil prices are rolling over here gold bounce was up much better but that finished up about 0.9 tenths of a percent. Why did the market cave into the close? I don't have a freaking clue.
Starting point is 00:44:56 And I don't care. If I worried about every why, the thing that sticks out again are the semis. And now we are past, there's more earnings. Just letting you know. In fact, after the close today, I haven't even looked, is eBay and DoorDash. And while I got you, eBay,
Starting point is 00:45:17 is down three bucks and that's been a strong name. DoorDash is down 15 bucks and that's been a relatively strong name. That's not good news. Qualcomm, that's been relatively strong. That is up, that's up six bucks. It was down a dollar and a half today. And Cuervo, QRVO, that's down 11 bucks. And NVIDE is down seven bucks in the aftermarket on nothing.
Starting point is 00:45:47 Who knows? So just letting you know that was wow. Just a lot of ick and just be careful. Buy the book, and that's B-Y, the book.
Starting point is 00:46:06 Every major index is below the 50-day moving average and you know what that means? They had a chance to have a good day-to-day, and they couldn't. And the institutions came in and gave the market a big, gigantic, you know which finger. And until that changes, cool them jets.
Starting point is 00:46:32 The marijuana stocks had a monster move yesterday off of our DEA saying, eh, get stoned, everything's cool. They had a monster move back down today. So you had one of these knee-jerk moves. Hopefully you didn't buy it. CGC was down, yeah, only 24% today. And I'm seeing a couple others down 15 to 20%. And remember the question I asked yesterday.
Starting point is 00:47:02 The fact that the DEA classified a different way, is that going to make anybody smoke more? And I pose the question on air. And the answer for me was, I don't think so. Yeah, we'll see. In the news, all I can tell you is, what's been occupying my time is racism. We have one rule on racism.
Starting point is 00:47:39 There should not be any. Every race, creed, color, gender, denomination, height, weight, should be treated like you would want to be treated. and we still are amazed that anybody has any hate for anyone because of race, religion, or what have you. But such as such. You have a great evening drive carefully. I'll be on with Varney and Company tomorrow. 10 a.m. Fox Business Network, don't miss that.
Starting point is 00:48:14 And until tomorrow's same time here, you have a great evening drive carefully. As soon as I'm done, I'm going to go speak to my dog again because he doesn't talk back.
