Starting point is 00:00:00 For delicious meals, you could go out to eat or spend hours in the kitchen. Or you could just make a Marie Callender's meal. Yeah, you heard me. Marie Callender's classic chicken parmesan bowl is delicious with scratch-made marinera sauce, creamy mozzarella cheese, and no preservatives. It's high in protein with 30 grams per serving. Marie Callender's, what having it all tastes like. Investor's Edge with Gary Coltbaum.
Starting point is 00:00:32 Straight talk about you and your money. Now from the BizTalk Studios, here is Gary Cultbaum. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. I'm Gary Coltbaum, your host. A thanks for being with us today. Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening. Last I looked, it's Tuesday, January 30th, 2012, and I am no longer writing 2023 on my check, so I'm a happy guy.
Starting point is 00:00:57 Yes, I still write checks. Hope you have it a good day. In case you don't know, this is serious talk on you and everything that affects you in the markets, the economy, jobs, unemployment, taxes, deficit spending, scam, shams, corruption. You name it, we cover it with no agenda, ulterior motive, or bias. Why? We don't like any of them. They've earned the right to not like any of them. And of course, if you do not get this radio show in your city, we'll post it on GaryK.com.
Starting point is 00:01:26 We'll also post it on a Twitter feed, which is now X. So you need to follow us on extras. Go there. Put our name in. And you can email me, Just Be Nice. That's all you got to do. Not like the person who last week said Jew boy. Hey, Jew boy. What can I tell you? People are quite the weird. That's what we deal with every now and then. Okay. So let's get to the crux of where we are right now. We're in the middle of earning season. This week, Six stocks represent 35% of the NASDAQ 100 and 25% of the S&P. They'll be reporting. We got a couple after the close today.
Starting point is 00:02:16 Actually, three of them. You got Google. You've got AMD, Microsoft, but also Starbucks. And I've kept them very wealthy throughout the years with my triple espressoes and my spinach and federeps. and my reduced fat turkey bacon sandwiches. But I've stopped the espressoes as of recent. I haven't had one in six weeks.
Starting point is 00:02:41 I go cold turkey every now and then. As we go through, we'll report them to you. We'll tell you what we think. But more importantly, how you don't lose money or make money is based on the reaction of these stocks at any given point in time. Keep in mind, a lot of these stocks, a lot of them, they've had big moves in the last month. We have highlighted them for you.
Starting point is 00:03:11 We have told you exactly specific points on where they were breaking out. We would not be surprised if we get some pulling back because of that through earnings, but if you're going to make 50, 100% on your money in stocks, you've got to hold through earnings and you got to hold through pullbacks, and as we say, close your eyes, hold your nose and pray, which I've tried. It does not work. We'll have the news of the day. Nothing great to report to you from that beautiful place called Washington, D.C.,
Starting point is 00:03:47 where they continue to extract oodles and oodles of bucks out of our wallets, and creating the greatest slush fund in the history of the world. Thank you, J.B. We'll cover everything, news of the day, and lots more. Okay. In the aftermarket, and this shall change, are you ready? Google closed 151.50. I got it at 145.50.
Starting point is 00:04:29 That's earnings. Just came out. Down. Microsoft closed it 408-59. I got it 403.50. Down a little bit. Has AMD reported yet? I'm about to tell you negative.
Starting point is 00:04:49 So anyway, you got two megas down initially on their earnings. Keep in mind, Microsoft broke out around 380. It's 403, even in the aftermarket. Google a little bit of a different story. Google right now will be right back basically to where it broke out. I'm not even going to go through the numbers right now because I really can't because I'll drive you up a wall. AMD, I've got down three bucks in the aftermarket to 169 initially. So you got three biggies down in the FNRIC.
Starting point is 00:05:29 By the way, Microsoft beat handily, both on sales and earnings. Welcome to the world of potentially the selling of the news. And let me repeat, these aftermarket numbers can change. You got conference calls. You got the overnight. Anything is possible. I've already noticed Microsoft bounce up three bucks in the last 30 seconds. Welcome to my world.
Starting point is 00:05:55 The rest of the week, if you want to Boeing. And talk about a complete mishandling. I will not own Boeing stock. I haven't owned it. In 18 and 19, two crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia, I believe about 350 people in tragic airplane crashes. I still remember after it came out, They were slow on the get-go to really come out and explain things.
Starting point is 00:06:27 And the way they handled it, let's call it piss poor, the CEO was gone. And now you got a door come off. Luckily, it's 16,000 feet. If it was a 25,000 feet, there would have been a lot of dead people. And luckily, there was nobody sitting in that chair next to that door. We're finding loose bolts on airplanes, which, by the way, you can put it on the back of not only Boeing, but who's at the airports, but who builds the planes. And the stock is paying quite the stiff penalty at this point in time, and rightfully so.
Starting point is 00:07:10 And then just Apple, every $15.6 billion. today an analyst came out on Apple and said their iPhone business could be down 15% this year Apple was down four bucks it's been pretty much drifting you got Honeywell in the Dow Merck in the Dow Royal Caribbean I heard they have big ships Amazon Facebook just a whole host and hundreds and hundreds of more we're just highlighting the big guys so again We only have a certain amount of time in the show. We'll give you the updated numbers as they move. But so far on the get-go, ew, to the reaction to these earnings.
Starting point is 00:07:59 But again, I think it just has to do with these stocks or just been strong. And the reason I know it is because we bought them on the move. As we told you, we sold down some. And we'll see what the rest brings. These are the head honcho top dog big cheeses out there. We do not own any apple. By the way, Starbucks missed buy a penny, but I do have that stock up $1.50. Yay.
Starting point is 00:08:27 All right. On the day, Daup 133. You might as well write these things down. Number one, analysts came out and upgraded the big banks. Bank America breaks out to New High today. City Group breaks out to New High. J.P. Morgan, same. Goldman, not there yet, but getting close.
Starting point is 00:08:44 big banks aren't going to hurt. But with the Dow up 133, NASDAQ down 118. NASDAQ 100 down 119. Transports down 159. Semiconductor index down 69. And I gather as we go into Tamar, if nothing changes, we'll have a little rough going on the NASDAQ in the morning to a certain extent. Also of note, here's what has not changed.
Starting point is 00:09:16 China stocks. They can't buy a friend, can't buy a thrill. Another rough day. As we have told you, China, which the government took over, and through the years debt, debt and more debt, we told you on our last trip to China, we were driving down the highways with a guide. We passed. I'm going to say about five or six ghost cities. Now, we're not talking about ghost buildings. We're not talking about ghost streets.
Starting point is 00:09:49 We're not talking about ghost blocks. We're talking ghost cities. They built cities that are just plain old empty. The cities go for, I guess, a couple of miles, if not more. And there were buildings put up and all kinds of everything, and it was barren. It was ghost towns. And now we find out a company called Evergrand goes by-bye. they have some serious issues in China going forward.
Starting point is 00:10:19 And of course, they are control freaks with their businesses. They would go in the right way for a long while. Then this dude that's running the show right now into the ground. And threatening Taiwan is really hurting things. They forgot. People want to be able to run their business, do better for themselves, and their families without the interference of government, and they're trash in it.
Starting point is 00:10:50 They are not as bad as Venezuela, where that puke Maduro destroyed the country. And for some reason, I hear we're cutting a deal with him. Yay. Why would we cut a deal with, oh, God, this president. Up next, more in these markets. What to avoid? Where's the leaders?
Starting point is 00:11:09 And lots of news of the day. We'll be whining and complaining. I'm Gary. This is the one only investor's edge. Goodman, host of Beyond the Script, the podcast where I sit down with pharmacists to answer the health questions you didn't even know you could ask at the pharmacy counter. In this episode, we are diving into gut health with CVS pharmacist Victoria Motola, who explains why so many of us live with stomach issues we should not accept as normal.
Starting point is 00:12:56 A lot of what I see is just like chronic bloating, chronic stomach aches. Like I get a stomach stomach cake every time that I eat. And it just becomes like a lifestyle where, oh, yeah, you know, I just, I have a stomachache every day. Or I'm constantly feeling like gassy. And all of those things are not something that generally, if you have a healthy gut, you should be living with. So that's when we deep dive. We deep dive into your medication. We deep dive into your OTC medication. And then at that point, we can probably identify something that we can change. Here the full conversation, plus some fascinating facts about how gut health affects so much more than just your stomach on Beyond the Script, a podcast from CVS Pharmacy and IHeart Radio. Listen now wherever you get your podcasts.

Investors Edge. The last bastion of quality programming. With Gary Coltbaum.
Starting point is 00:15:00 It doesn't get better than this. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. And as I said, things will change quickly. Microsoft is now flat in the aftermarket. It was down six or seven bucks a minute ago. They announced something on their cloud and all that, and cloud's doing well. Look at that. I own a nice chunk of Microsoft.
Starting point is 00:15:31 Hopefully it stays up. By the way, AMD is not reported. We are waiting for that one. We don't know just yet. Okay, few things. Number one, we mentioned the big banks. Very good move today. Got some new highs in a few of them. I'm not so sure you can never go in a bare market with that happening. But avoid the China, the solars, the gold miners, the silver, the drug stores, a bunch of the commodities, a bunch of the oils, Carnival crews and Norwegian crews terrible. Emerging markets. A lot of the commodities. A bunch of the oils. Carnival crews and Norwegian crews terrible. emerging markets, electric vehicles. Tesla has been absolute gross, along with others that you've never heard of.
Starting point is 00:16:16 And then names in the Dow, 3M, Boeing, Nike, United Health, DuPont, Johnson & Johnson, Intel just croaked. Apple, I don't think it's croaked yet, but it's under pressure, earnings Thursday. some of the media companies that we are paramount and what was that other one was it Warner Brothers just in bare markets utilities weak drug stocks not the drug stocks with the weight loss stuff but Bristol Myers Pfizer AstraZeneca bad shape so there's still plenty of stuff not working you know it has been working. By the way, Microsoft's now up three in the aftermarket. Yay.
Starting point is 00:17:08 What's been working has been. AI. Software. Semis. Those semis are under some pressure now over the last few days started on Thursday. Other financials pretty decent. Some insurance stocks pretty decent. But just overall, if you look at the major indices, I find nothing untwe. I have nothing to whine and complain about in the major indices. We will let you know if that changes. Remember, we've been flexible as flexible can be. We had you from July to the end of October. What did we do? We're out.
Starting point is 00:17:51 July to end of October. November 1st, we said we thought the market had a chance to turn. That was the day it turned. And ever since, pretty darn good. with some warts, but pretty darn good. Coming into this year, we simply jumped on all the good stuff. That was breaking out. And it be working.
Starting point is 00:18:13 Simple as that. And that's how we'll roll as we go forward. But the big key is earnings. I can promise you, we have absolutely no clue. No clue. let me repeat no clue how reaction to earnings come in you have to remember it really is the toss of a coin you have to remember it really is anything's possible today on the upside you got hca the hospital you got new corps the steel company sanmena you got cisco not the cisco of
Starting point is 00:19:02 networking, but Cisco of the food, strong move. So you got different sectors gaping up on earning some, what I would call on the suspect side. And of course, on the other way, because you just never know what's behind the door. And on the downside today, you got things like United Parcel. UPS down 13 bucks today. in unison, guess what? FedEx Gapped down about six, seven weeks ago, so there's something going on in the delivery business.
Starting point is 00:19:41 You know what that is? I think it's Amazon. I think it's Amazon. Of course it's Amazon. Every street, trucks, Amazon. When I was up at the apartment up in New York City, we walk out and there's like 100 packages for people in the building. 95% of them were packages.
Starting point is 00:20:00 by Amazon, man, they got game. They really figured things out. And UPS, I do believe, is announcing 12,000 firings, if I'm not incorrect. By the way, the UPS drivers make a lot of money. They were hiring new people. They're laying off 12,000 employees across the globe to align resources to 2024. That means demand is not as good as they expected. Simple as that. And onward upward to the rest of the earnings as we move forward. By the way, Microsoft just moved back down three bucks and it's up 50 cents in the aftermarket. Yippee, A.M.D. reported, they only met estimates. Closed it 172, I got it 169. Guess what? 15 seconds ago, it was 163, down 14. That's how quick these things are
Starting point is 00:21:05 And that's why we say Don't blink when it comes to earnings reports All right so three are out nothing great No big move is the upside Again I just think They've had good moves already And we may just be into what we call A little bit of sell the news
Starting point is 00:21:25 In AMD's case The CEO's been out talking up AI like crazy On the revenue front done look like they in fact downside guidance on revenue for this quarter so me thinks the young lady
Starting point is 00:21:40 talk too much and now they're going to have to come through going forward or else in the news what do I want to start do I start with PayPal because PayPal CEO
Starting point is 00:22:00 two weeks ago came out and told everybody we're going to shock the world and now they're firing people. Is that what they meant by Shock the World? PayPal? By the way, I use them. Not very effective.
Starting point is 00:22:17 Just letting you know. They need to fix their application. Just my own opinion on the PayPal. In the news, we predicted this the other day. We told you on this show, I'm wondering when the CEO of these airlines, particularly in United that has a ton of them, are going to meet with Airbus, because they can't keep flying these blowing planes.
Starting point is 00:22:46 The United Airlines CEO made a secret trip to France meet with Airbus. Just letting you know, Scott Kirby, went to Toulouse, France. I think it's called Toulouse, T-O-U-U-S-E, I'll have to look that up. He met with Airbus. Duh, if it ain't working, fix it or replace it. Wise move. Hope Airbus gets their act together. I told you UPS 12,000, block.
Starting point is 00:23:20 And I don't know why they change the name from square to block. They're cutting 10% of their workforce through 24. Welcome to the world. Up next, lots more. We'll be whining and complaining. I'm Gary. This is the one only investor's edge. Hi, I'm Dr. Jake Goodman, host of Beyond the Script, the podcast where I sit down with pharmacists

Starting point is 00:26:04 America is talking. Investor's Edge. He's got to be pleased with that. The crowd is just on his feet here. He's a Cinderella boy. With Gary Colbomb. It comes highly recommended. You're going to feel better if you talk to him.
Starting point is 00:26:19 And welcome once again to Investors Edge. By the way, I'm not making this up. Advanced micro devices in the aftermarket was as low as 163. It's now 175. Microsoft was low as 401. As high as 413, it's 408. Having fun yet? Google's still staying where it was.
Starting point is 00:26:40 Down $8 for the day total. It was down two already at another six. Of course, that all can change. Tomorrow's the Fed. So we pretty much continue to not be, in line with so many given them so much credit. Lots of talk of the Fed engineering the economy, and as we tell you, they do nothing. They do nothing for nobody. They help nothing. They help nobody, except when they were printing money. They were helping the markets, but that also
Starting point is 00:27:17 created all the inflation, which they now have to go the opposite way and take it down. They also screwed every saver with zero percent interest rates. They created the three-eight. What is that? Nobody wants to sell a house at three percent mortgage that was artificially done by him in order to get an eight percent, which is now down to about six and a half seven, as interest rates have come down. He created all the bubbles and the froth and the speculation and the stupid. He missed the whole inflation move.
Starting point is 00:27:50 Remember, we were telling you inflation was coming. When it hit, they said it was transitory. yeah Biden yelling Powell it's transitory don't worry about it until you are paying through the nose for everything
Starting point is 00:28:05 which by the way you still are if you have you noticed the shrinkflation have you noticed the chips the party bags are the old big bags the big bags are getting to be the regular bags but prices are still the same it started with Doritos do you know what Doritos did
Starting point is 00:28:23 I'm not making this up. They took three chips out of their bag. That's how they started. And then go look, by the way. Go check out what they're doing the chips, let alone everything else you're paying for. And that's why it's so stupid them tell us, oh, inflation's better. The rate of inflation is down, but everything's still up. If price goes up 15%, and then this year goes only up 3%, I got news for you. It's still up 15 and 3. Have you seen your insurance costs? Have you seen your rental costs? Have you see what it costs to get cars? Well, you can get the $7,500 for an electric vehicle. That's ridiculously priced also. So that's still going on. And once it hits, it's very tough to turn. Now, we've had a little bit of better with oil prices coming down some and some other commodities. But on the whole, how's it out there?
Starting point is 00:29:22 just remember as I tell you and I'm not kidding I do most of the shopping I'm in Publix and I check things out I speak to the managers what and where and why and then I look and then they show the size is smaller of the packages the price is higher
Starting point is 00:29:43 you got the double whammy so that's still going on regardless what they tell you now As you know, since we're getting into them now for a few minutes, we have been telling you for a very long time, go look at the quotes of Thomas Jefferson. Just go look at the quotes of Thomas Jefferson. And why would I want you to do that? Because we told you amazingly, 200 plus years ago, give or take, he predicted the things we are seeing now.
Starting point is 00:30:37 in droves. He predicted it. He warned us of what I call control freakism. That is people in government that think you're morons. They're smarting you. And without them, your lot in life
Starting point is 00:30:57 will never reach where it should be. So keep voting for them. And they'll keep sending you things and doing things for you and telling you how wonderful they are. But of course, it's all a bunch of lies. Bull crap.
Starting point is 00:31:16 The worst one is this president coming out and saying they've cut child poverty in half because of a tax credit. Really? As we have told you, for 20 years, I've been on the border of Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida, 12 to 13,000 kids.
Starting point is 00:31:35 I've been past chairman. Head of our main fundraising event each year and fighting the fight against children in poverty in tough cases with only one parent. Gangs hanging around. Schools that are not performing. And it's not me. I'm just on the board. The staff, magnificent job. 12, 13,000 kids here. The statistics are phenomenal. every kid graduating high school pregnancy none and go on and on and the reason that happens is because of hard work education mentorship leadership skills learning the things that make people great not a tax credit you don't come out of poverty because a tax credit you come out of poverty because you do great things and it nauseates me when i hear that BS being spewed. It nauseates me when I hear him say, cut the deficit, while this last 12 months the deficits up $2.7 trillion. The greatest slush fund in history to do his bidding and earned votes. Thomas Jefferson, and I quote, over 200 years ago, by the way, he was the third president of the United States, died 83 years old.
Starting point is 00:33:14 1801 to 1809 was president The first quote You must know that he warned us about It is incumbent on every generation To pay its own debts as it goes A principle which acted on would save one half the wars or the world Number two The democracy will cease to exist
Starting point is 00:33:35 When you take away from those who are willing to work And give to those who would not We call that the buyout number three I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them
Starting point is 00:33:56 and four my reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government too much government our federal spending in the year 2000 was 1.8 trillion it's 7 trillion this year more than the COVID years
Starting point is 00:34:18 that's what this administration did unfortunately they had to have somebody to sign off on it you know who that somebody was the other side the Republicans had the house they could have kicked them in the you know what's
Starting point is 00:34:36 they could have got on TV and said let me show you what he's trying to do but they didn't just so you know 2019 the year before COVID federal spending was 4.4 trillion. It's now going to be 7 trillion. You want to add that up?
Starting point is 00:34:58 More than 50% growth of government since 2019. But he's saying and telling you, oh no, he's cut the deficit. Oh, he's cutting spending. They told us the last president was the greatest liar of all time. If that's the case, this guy has now taken the table. championship belt away by miles and the media doesn't take out a bunch of pages to list all the lies these days they let it pass thus we'll report it to you and don't get me starting on immigration I think we did that enough yesterday but you see what's going on in real time
Starting point is 00:35:55 wide open borders bad people around the globe getting tough on us crime in many big cities rampant citizens treated worse than the criminals and you want to believe this is by
Starting point is 00:36:21 accident dudes this be on purpose Kaiser Permanent in Oakland, wait to hear what they had to do. That's up next. And back on the numbers. I'm Gary. This is the one only investor's edge.
Starting point is 00:36:39 Hi, I'm Dr. Jake Goodman, host of Beyond the script, the podcast where I sit down with pharmacists to answer the health questions you didn't even know you could ask at the pharmacy counter. Starting point is 00:39:30 And welcome once again to Investor's Edge. Let me finish with Kaiser Permanente. We'll get back to the aftermarket because let me just tell you that Jellers moving all over the plate. So Kaiser Permanente is Oakland's largest private employer. They have sent a memo
Starting point is 00:39:54 to their workers in downtown Oakland to stay in their buildings for lunch in response to a massive amount of street robbery of workers who went out to grab something to eat. Workers are being told to bring their own food in. A memo issued last month also told workers not based in Oakland
Starting point is 00:40:27 to not have any meetings downtown and to instead move them elsewhere or have them online. Now businesses are fighting back, obviously. Restaurants are fighting back, obviously, but look what's happening. I mentioned to you yesterday, this is amazing. In Washington, D.C., Washington, D.C., the most locked-down place on earth, they have put out, I don't know if they're putting them on telephone polls or sending it via email to the citizens on how to make sure you're not carjacked.
Starting point is 00:41:21 Imagine living in the great United States of America in Washington, D.C., and there's bazillion carjackings to the point where they're telling you how to prevent it. Like, if you're at a stoplight, make sure you got room between you and the next car. Really? And all this is happening because the one job of the people that run these places is to protect the citizens and they don't give a crap. It's so easy to fix this. you put these clowns in jail
Starting point is 00:42:02 you indict them you set a high bail find them guilty and put them away for quite the while simple as that but what they have done in these areas the bail is a joke people are getting out and they're just doing it again
Starting point is 00:42:27 and when they know they can get out they just do it again and when you know they get out they just do it again when I go into New York and I go into a Dwayne Reed or whatever they call it everything the toothpaste is locked up some cities they have a law the craziest law I've ever seen if you shoplift 950 or more oh we're going to charge you 949 or less we're not you see shoplifters walk into the stores with calculators not making this up and these people are so emboldened
Starting point is 00:43:11 they get together have you seen the videos of a hundred of them going into a major store in these cities and just ripping it apart and the employees are told
Starting point is 00:43:23 no touch them on purpose and we bring these things up because ultimately it affects business it affects markets it affects stocks It affects psychology. It affects psyche.
Starting point is 00:43:52 And the way elections are going to work, if somebody doesn't lay down the law, the next person will. Oh, it's going to be a fun next, what are we, entering February? Oh, the next bunch of months are going to be hysterical. Trump and Biden again. Okay, doke. All right, update. Are you ready? So, AMD is down only three...
Starting point is 00:44:21 $2.5.5. But was down 7.5 today in advance. So it's down 10. At one time, it was down 14. At one time, it was up $5 more. Microsoft hit a lower 401, a higher of 412. It's 404, down $5.80 for the day. The only one that stayed consistent is Google.
Starting point is 00:44:45 That baby is just down about $8 for the whole day on their earnings. have enough time to cover the numbers. We'll do more of that tomorrow. Starbucks is up a few bucks. I'm looking for anything else that may matter at this point in time. And really, the big guys are what matters most. Something called Manhattan Associates Closed as 224. I got a 233. That's a software company. We'll see how that looks tomorrow. That's been somewhat of a strong stock. I've been watching it, had been on it. And I think that's about it in the aftermarket that really has me looking so AMD Microsoft Google all three are down I think all three are in the top 10 of the biggest NASDAQ 100 I think Google and Microsoft definitely in the
Starting point is 00:45:41 top five so that'll matter a bunch and as I look at the NASDAQ 100 actually only down about a half percent in the aftermarket. I would expect it a little bit more. And on to tomorrow. And Thursday. Apple, Facebook, I mean, it just doesn't stop, ladies and gentlemen. And the most important thing we're going to be watching for is the reactions, but we're two. What do we mean? If a stock's had a great move, let's say 25 points and pulls back six, it still remains in a very good uptrend. But that's for tomorrow. We'll see how it plays out. This is fun time for us. Actually not. The amount of time we spend extra every morning, every night, two or three hours a day. Why? We've got to stay on top of this. And what we're always looking for, a name that nobody's
Starting point is 00:46:43 ever heard of, that all of a sudden was expecting a billion dollars in revenue for a quarter, and they do $1.6 billion, and they blow away the earnings report. If they show up, you're going to know it, because we'll tell you. You all have a great evening drive carefully. When you go at home, do like we do. It's quite simple. We started on the day of the Columbine.
Starting point is 00:47:13 Make sure when you get home, you hug your family, you hug your children. They will feel better. You will feel better. So until tomorrow, peace out. Stay well, be well. Things will get better. We hope. Bye-bye.
