Starting point is 00:00:00 At Arizona State University, we've made online education better, smarter, and more personalized, so you can go further in your aspiring field. I decided to pursue medicine once I realized that ASU did have the online program for biological sciences. You're still required to learn the same curriculum. You're still being tested on the same content that anyone would be tested on in person. The comprehensiveness of the program prepared me so well for medical school. Explore over 350 plus programs at ASUonline.asu.edu. Investor's Edge with Gary Coltbaum.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Straight talk about you and your money. Now from the BizTalk Studios, here is Gary Cultbaum. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. I'm Gary Coltbaum, your host day. Thanks of being with us today. Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening. It's Wednesday, January 4th, 2023, and I signed the check today, 2022, as I always do. It usually takes me about two weeks to figure it out.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Yes. I admit it. Ladies and gentlemen, William O'Neill, who we talk about all the time, once said, January is a pain in the, we won't use the word.
Starting point is 00:01:15 He always said it's a big whipsaw, be careful about it. And what we are seeing now is just that. I'm going to go through the action today. We don't need to do this often, but every now and then we'll do what the market did throughout the day. We'll spend a couple of minutes.
Starting point is 00:01:32 on that, but we want to get the big picture when we're talking the markets. And it's not been easy because there really hasn't been a big picture. We've been to the bare market. We had a big drop in December, but since the low, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, and the hope is improvement. What do we mean by that? Throughout the decades, it's now a couple of decades. We've talked to you about, it's not just about the Dow or the S&P, it's what's underneath the hood.
Starting point is 00:02:11 And as we've said to you, if the Dow is up 200 but advanced declines 2 to 1 negative, that is bad news. Always want to see the opposite. We've also told you we don't want to see the Dow leading the NASDAQ lagging. and that's happened since the low in October. Today, possibly an important day, we're going to give you the outcome after all was said and done, but the things we have told you on the negative front got even more negative today on what finished up as a good day,
Starting point is 00:02:58 and we'll tell you what's starting to, for the first time in a while, we can call it a sore thumb, something that really sticks out. But we then have to go to our two other words, actually three, but don't blink. Rallies in bare markets are really pain in the you know what. So we'll take it one by one step by step. We'll also got some things we want to discuss on what's going on out there. case you haven't watched today, the Republicans, I used to be a Republican, but the people that took over through the years are not Republicans. They're control freaks. They say they're not.
Starting point is 00:04:01 They say for the people, but, and we're just talking these people. There are a few that are good, but they're shouted down. They've been actually voted out by what I consider to be maniacs. They tell you what they're going to do and they don't. They tell you how they care and they don't. So I am a registered Republican to vote in a primary, but I'm an independent. There's no bigger used to be Republican than me. And what do I mean by used to be? Well, it used to be they were for balanced budgets, low taxes, smaller government,
Starting point is 00:04:42 effective and efficient government, stay out of the way let us shine and all that's happened is look what they just voted for they just voted for a massive increase in spending which came along with a massive increase
Starting point is 00:05:00 in taxes from Biden they gave him what he wanted and then you got these creeps in the party you know who I'm talking about they're creeps some of the crap that comes out of their mouth You just want to vomit. But I digress.
Starting point is 00:05:22 So they're in there trying to come up with a speaker of the house, and 20 of them are ripping on this Kevin McCarthy, and they're saying he's been there too long and he's done wrong and this and that, and we'll do better and want somebody else. Here's my only thought on it. Didn't they have a bunch of weeks to figure this out before we got here? Wasn't the election in November? Oh, I take that back.
Starting point is 00:05:49 couple of months. They couldn't figure it out. They couldn't get into a room. They couldn't iron it out. They couldn't say to McCarthy, you're never going to get voted. Let's find somebody else. They waited and it's a clown show. And you know who wins on all this? The Marxist party is laughing there. You know what's off. So I don't know if you've been watching this. It's a comedy act. to you by the people that in part, and remember the longer they've been there, the worse, 31 trillion of debt, before interest rates went up, 500 to 600 billion a year of our dollars go towards interest and not towards anything else. Massive spending, massive overreach, massive everything. Oh, wait a minute, Trump lowered taxes. Oh, yeah, he did, and then he raised
Starting point is 00:06:48 tariffs, which is a tax on the American public, and then paid off the farmers because the farmers got hurt. So we know he was BSing when he kept saying, oh, China pays for it. And not one Republican stood up when Trump was president, and six trillion to seven trillion of debt later, they didn't say a word. But now they care about deficits in debt and spending. You got this creep. this lion's sack of crap
Starting point is 00:07:22 George Santos and the Republicans didn't pressure him to get out the guy is lied about his whole life everything he makes Elizabeth Warren look like a truth teller about her life that's how bad he is the Republicans I used to know
Starting point is 00:07:42 would have stand tall and kicked his ass out pressured him would let him sit curse him out on a daily base basis, not a word. I think one person said something. So now in the Republican Party in the House of Representatives, you've got a creep. Of course, you've got Elizabeth Warren too. And of course, you had Nancy Pelosi, the greatest insider trader of all time in the leadership. And that's how
Starting point is 00:08:14 you get the 31 trillion of debt, massive yearly deficits, earmarks are now back. They can't account for trillions of dollars at the Pentagon. And they still gave Pentagon more. 850 billion this year. 20 years ago, it was 320 billion. You've got to be kidding me. And you wonder why myself and many independents are so damn pissed off. We're watching it in living color today.
Starting point is 00:08:55 Serenity now. That's the big story. today. I digress. Before we get into the good, we told you managed care, coal, oils. This morning we added defense stocks, all in different levels of topping out. Oh, big biotech too. Does it mean they go into big bear markets not necessarily topping out means they ain't gone up and we have to be on notice about them well on a good update today united health and the dow was down 14 dollars today elevents used to be anthem was down 17 signer down 11 you manna down 8 defense stocks northrop grumman down 14 today coal could not budge oil stocks mostly down
Starting point is 00:10:09 Oil prices down another four bucks. So the bad charts are turning down. But recently we had a bad December. Market stopped going down in the last few days. And I've just been sitting. I take that back. Last two weeks. And we're looking for any light at the end of the tunnel.
Starting point is 00:10:37 Yesterday we opened hot and sold off, but did finish off the lows. Today we opened hot, sold off. Rallied back up, sold off, rallied back up, sold off at 345, and then in the last 15 minutes, poof, rallied back up. Why? That's up next on Mr. One Only Investor's Edge. Starting point is 00:14:01 Hey, this promises to be fun. Investors Edge. The last bastion of quality programming. With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. Welcome once again to Investors Edge. So let me just tell you, in the last 14 minutes of the day, the Dow rallied 195 points. In the last 14 minutes of the day, in the last 14 minutes of the day, the NASDAQ rallied 76 points.
Starting point is 00:14:52 The market wrap is brought to you by Investment-Models.com. That's Jim Moraback. One of the great market timers, no gray areas with the man you're either in or out of the market. proprietary indicators. Go check it out. Investment-mottles.com. The Dow rallied 70, the NASDAQ, 76 points in 14 minutes to the close. Finished up 71. It was actually down five points.
Starting point is 00:15:20 The Dow, which rallied 195 points in 14 minutes into the close, finished up 133. It was down 62 points with 14 minutes to go. As I mentioned, I was going to tell you about. today's intraday. The Dow basically opened up today again hot hit 33409 at the high it was up 273 and then was down 50 with 14 minutes to go finished up 133 we'll take it the NASDAQ at the high today hit 10515 was actually up almost 130 finished up 71 more We'll take it since it was down five with 14 minutes to go. But neither of the story.
Starting point is 00:16:28 Even if we didn't get that rally at the close, what the story is, 3,354 stocks up on the New York, only 764 down. 3,205 NASDAQ stocks up, only 1185 down, a very strong advanced decline day. important? Well, it's only one day. It's only one day. But it's a damn good day. And we're going to make sure we remember it. And when we do our scans tonight, we're going to look at it. Why? Because over the last two weeks, the market has stopped going down. In order to go higher, you need a plethora. Notice the big word from Gary, plethora of stocks moving higher. what we call curling up what the heck does that mean well draw a line horizontal draw another line horizontal a little bit higher and then bounce in between both of those and then curl up after a
Starting point is 00:18:01 couple of weeks of bouncing back and forth above it that's what we mean we'll see what we can find today But man, oh man, we never complain about days like today. And you know why? Because in the last 15 months, how many times have we said to you, the Dow was flat today, but advanced declines were two to one negative and that's negative. So we got the opposite today. Whether or not it's meaningful, we'll find out in the days ahead. But we're reporting to a damn good day.
Starting point is 00:18:42 What else today? China, what have we said to you? Man, it's acting really well. But how do you trust it? F-U-T-U, a broker there dropped from 60 to 37 on news out of the government just last week. How do you trust it? Guess what? Overnight they did the opposite with Alibaba, a very important name.
Starting point is 00:19:15 in case you don't know they own a company called ant financial that the china government prevented it from going public that started the crash in china stocks well they announced some loosening up ali baba up 13 percent today breaks above a range today by do b i l i l i j d Nettees, 10 cent. The whole army of Chinese names broke above a range today. CWEB. It's a China Internet Index. That was rangebound to 58 bucks.
Starting point is 00:20:04 Was up 10 today. Gapped up. 17%. KWEB, up 8%. That's the overseas Internet Index, China. So we're just letting you know China's leading right now for the first time in a very long while. And it got some teeth today.
Starting point is 00:20:30 The question is, how do you trust the country's gone full commie, full control freak? And it's been proven out by stock price performance. How do you trust? I'll leave you with that question because personally, I don't know. We're just letting you know as technicians busted above range today on volume. We're not talking about yearly highs. We're talking about levels off the lows. We have discussed with you things that were at yearly highs.
Starting point is 00:21:14 One was FUTU. That just got blasted. So what do you do? We'll let you decide that one. Because personally, we don't know. We can promise you if this was not China doing these things and we were seeing stocks doing this, we'd be yelling and screaming them. So we're just letting you know if we were you. The ETFs are FXI, KWEB, CWEB.
Starting point is 00:21:52 We are not advocating, buying, selling, shorting, covering. We're just telling you what they did today on a more cooperative government of China. which still should scare that the market has to move. Oh, wait a minute, that's happening here too with our central bank. So anyway, a whipsawing day all over the freaking place ended up well. Why? I would suggest that tough to hold back when advanced declines are so good. Now we'll see if it can get some juice from here.
Starting point is 00:22:32 Up next. What else? as I lose my voice. I'm Gary. This is the one only investors at. This message is brought to you by the Capital One Venture X card. Starting point is 00:24:56 The crowd is just on his feet here. He's a Cinderella boy. With Gary Colbomb. It comes highly recommended. You're going to feel better if you talk to him. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. Yesterday we mentioned gold. We had said to you that it is now back near what we call the high of a range.
Starting point is 00:25:32 Broke above the range also. When you have a chance look at the GDX, Look at the HUI, which is something called the Gold Bugs Index. It was touching 239 for the past four weeks. Close to 248 today. Moved above range. If it sticks, higher. Simple as that.
Starting point is 00:26:02 If the HUI breaks back below 239, failure. If the GDX breaks below 30, failure. But as of the close today, pretty darn good move in the gold. Financials can't say much great about them. Can't say much great about them, but they had a good day. today. Financials led this recent move down. If they can get better, that helps the market. Simplistic is that. To what extent we don't know, just remember, anything we're telling you know, financials will be the first to report earnings in a couple of weeks. And of course,
Starting point is 00:27:06 it'll be the reaction to those earnings that matter. And just mostly everything's green. I got these screens. My stuffed screen is mostly green except those bearish areas, which we've been telling you about. But a good day for financials. Restaurants were, which have been the bare market. Good day.
Starting point is 00:27:27 Semis. Good day. They've been dead. Housing. Better. They've actually had some decent relative. of strength why interest rates another down day in yields back to 3.7 wasn't it 3.9 coming into this week that's good news was 3.879 coming into this week oil prices drop $3.72 and 72 today that's great news
Starting point is 00:28:02 two straight days of plunging oil prices and gas prices which means gas at the pump if it stays right here will be down markedly in the next 10 days. That's a help. So let's keep fingers crossed. We can come out of this morass because December sucked. And we're just letting you know some decent action today. Now, I've already scanned a lot. A ton still looks like crap.
Starting point is 00:28:42 A ton still needs a lot of work. We'll call it better. Some low-level moves and some retail. Acting good on crappy earnings. We had mentioned that to you. Remember that? How Abercrombie and Fitch reacted on earnings that were terrible. Burlington acted good on earnings that were terrible. They're still hanging in there.
Starting point is 00:29:15 On earnings that were terrible. Go figure. And as we state to you, it's not the news. It's how markets react to the news. Markets are forward-looking. So we're not going past what our headlines. lights go to, but darn good advanced decline day to day, a good switch from the recent, but we'll need to see range taken out. At least this range we've been in for two weeks
Starting point is 00:29:50 after a nauseating December. Worries remain. Economy. Everybody being paraded on TV just about, oh, everything's going to be fine. Earning's coming up. But man, oil prices tanking and yields tanking, they've been important. Now, not so good today and quite weird. Microsoft finished down 10.5 bucks today. Was down, I believe, about 14 and rallied two bucks in the last 14 minutes with the market. On a downgrade? Why is that worrisome? That doesn't happen in bull markets. These are the companies that ignore downgrade. and go higher. It was not only down. It was down huge to be watched. Google finished down today. Amazon finished down today. Apple was up a buck 29 today. Was up four. So that got distributed a little bit.
Starting point is 00:31:29 So we'll see. We love the AD today, but it's only one day. You got that? We're not at advocating anything but only one day, but a damn good day. And there's still a lot of warts. China sticks out. You know my qualms on that. Gold stuck out today. I'd like to tell you there's new yearly highs. There ain't.
Starting point is 00:32:15 I got a few. Boeing still sticking out on jet orders. That's the big cough. in the Dow but on the downside Microsoft down 10 and change and United Health down 14 in change in the Dow
Starting point is 00:32:40 of no help Honeywell also downgraded to the tune of four bucks in the Dow so that's a lot of that transport's a good day today they've been dead but we're going to call today
Starting point is 00:33:00 better and underneath the surface much better give me two more days like this in the next couple of weeks. Remember, we have no bias, except what the market tells us. Simple as that. It keeps us out of trouble, which we did all bear market, and keeps us in gear. Good day, but we know January's insane. And today was insane. We have no clue what happens tomorrow. Remember that. Shorter term is the trees, the big picture's the forest.
Starting point is 00:34:00 I repeat, it's one day. What was interesting, again, the bearish charts worsened. And that managed care HMO group, yomped. And that's the gist. We expect some more whip-sawing as we move forward. Fundamentally, though, yields coming down in oil, prices coming down is great for you guys absolutely great for you guys and I thank you guys because guess what a bunch of you reported that guy or gal who is impersonating me on Twitter
Starting point is 00:35:00 and trying to sell products they no longer have a Twitter impersonating me because you're all reporting it thank you up next news of the day this is the one only investors edge. What's in your wallet? Terms apply, lounge access is subject to change. See Capital One.com for details. You're listening to. What are we waiting for?
Starting point is 00:37:46 Well, what are you waiting for? One, two, ready, go. I just got an email to watch a master technician tomorrow's webinar. The same technician who swore December was going to be a big market rally. He's now going to tell us the cycles of 2023. Yeah, the cycles. Ladies and gentlemen, great technicians, do not tell you what's going to happen in nine months. They tell you what's happening now and interpret it.
Starting point is 00:38:40 Just letting you know. Things I want to cover. Justin Bieber had a bored ape NFT, non-fungible, whatever, whatever. We warned you about these. We told you it was a bubble. We are not making this up by telling you. He bought an NFT for $1.3 million.
Starting point is 00:39:13 It was a picture of a bored ape. It's down 95%. And that's only because somebody would even pay it because they would be buying it from him. If only he was listening to this radio show. One of my pet peeves, as you know, this whole driverless car thing. What have I told you? There's no way in hell I'd never get in one. Ever!
Starting point is 00:39:56 At Disney World, they have the haunted mansion. And at the end, the ghost gets in your car and takes you out. That's about the extent of it for me. They have been promising driverless cars, and I know there's out there. I hear there are some driverless trucks, driverless this. But this whole lie that we were going to be driverless, and I repeat a lie, guess what's going on with the driverless business? You got it.
Starting point is 00:40:32 You're handsome and buffed host. was correct. And that goes for flying taxis. You should have seen the freaking traffic on the road driving from New York back to Florida this week. Yet we're going to have driverless taxis. Excuse me, flying taxis. They can't even get the traffic right on the roads. Flying taxis. I think there may be some short haul things, but it's going to be airplane types. Who are they trying to kid? Flying taxis? Coming to a neighborhood near you? Are these people high? I'm telling you the Jetsons ain't happening. They just got I-4 finished here in central Florida to relieve all the crazy traffic here. And by the way, they did a great job. I must tell you. 60 minutes. I've
Starting point is 00:41:48 complimented 60 minutes. I've ripped them on their bias on politics. and they're scare tactics. I haven't watched it yet, but I read what he said. They brought this guy Paul Ehrlich on to tell you the end of the world is back again. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the same guy who wrote the books on extinction and population trouble and the world ending years ago. He's been wrong. Yet they put him on 60 minutes. 60 minutes hasn't asked me to be on.
Starting point is 00:42:39 They bring on Al Gore 17 years ago to tell you we're doomed in 10 years. Even though the earth is 4.5 billion years old, the nerve of them to bring this Yutz con artist on to tell you we have 10 years made up out of thin air to scare the living crap out of you. so he can create green companies and make himself a crap loan of money by getting government grants from his friends that he never has to pay back. The nerve. The earth is 4.5 billion years old and nerve of anybody to tell us were doomed in 10 years. Follow the money, as they say. 60 minutes put Paul Ehrlich on.
Starting point is 00:43:27 I'll be watching it tonight and laughing my ass off. But also crying that some people will believe. leave this inflated ego. Oh, by the way, one of his themes where we're all going to starve to death. He's 93 years old. He lived a long life. Nothing he said came true, and they still parade him on to talk about the end of the world again. Don't you love the media? Kevin Arth, Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna, Jimmy Fallon, and others now getting sued. for endorsing the NFTs. What did they do? They endorse these things at the height of the bubble. Now, I don't think they're accountable. Yeah, you get paid to endorse, but they're just, they're
Starting point is 00:44:36 clowns. And the people that would actually buy this stuff because of a celebrity are bigger clowns. My peeps, remember all this. It will be repeated again in another cycle. But the bubbles popped. I watched somebody on TV today talking coins. There's 22,000 of them. Most of them are zero. Criminals, con artists.
Starting point is 00:45:07 But they can't stop. It's amazing to watch. Be smart. Protect your capital. Can't wait for tomorrow. Have a great evening drive carefully. I'll be on with Stuart and Varnie tomorrow. 10 a.m. hour, Fox Business Network, and same time tomorrow, this show.
