Investor's Edge with Gary Coltbaum.
Straight talk about you and your money.
Now from the BizTalk Studios, here is Gary Coltbaum.
And welcome once again to Investors Edge.
I'm Gary Coltbaum, your host.
A thanks for being with us today.
Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen.
Happy that you are listening.
It is Wednesday, the 2nd, September, 2006.
And we're still here.
We're still alive.
We're still kicking.
Hope you're having a good day.
As always, serious talk on everything that affects you as,
how do I describe it?
The jello just keeps moving on the plate.
I'll explain in a minute.
We'll talk markets, the economy, your job, your industry.
The Morlocks in D.C., debt, deficits, scams, shams, corruption, tariffs,
war, lies, cheaters, thieves, and whatever comes to mind.
Again, hope you have a good day.
Tomorrow, Adam, we'll be doing the show,
so you don't have to listen to me rant and rave about what's going on in D.C.
Because he usually does market, market, market.
I'll be on a flight across the pond, and we will be doing the show from there.
Not every day, but, and by the way, Labor Day is Monday.
Tuesday will be my fantasy football draft from there.
I'll be doing my fantasy football draft from Tuscany in Italy.
Tuesday at 1230 a.m. Tuscany time.
That should be fun.
Anyway, again, we do have a bunch to cover.
So listen carefully as we talk.
And if you don't get this radio show in your city,
we'll post it at GaryK.com, we'll also post on our X feed.
If you don't follow us on X, you should.
All you got to do is go there, put our name in.
Comes up.
And if you'd like to email us, all you got to do is be nice.
All you've got to do is be respectful.
Why?
Because that's the way we'll be.
Nice, respectful, as long as we always say,
as long as you don't like Hamas,
you don't like terrorists,
you didn't rob a bank today,
you're not racist,
then we're good.
Amongst other things.
So market's been on the weak side.
And when it's weak, and I can tell you the all-important semiconductors have been weak for 11 days,
you're going to get a bounce.
The Dow has been weak.
The Dow had dropped down about 2,000 points.
You're going to get a bounce.
To what extent we don't know, what leads we don't know, why we don't know, why we don't
know, but we put two and two together and try to figure it out. And what we'll do today is we'll
go through a bunch of areas and our thoughts. And as always, you get to decide. What we're
interested in very much doing is getting trends correctly. And of course, there's earnings
reports. There's Washington, D.C. in tariffs. I can tell you, easily, the steel stock. And
had a very strong day today. Do you know why? Because mines were changed in D.C. as usual.
In case you don't know about eight, nine days ago, steel stocks crumbled because of tariff announcements.
Today they're up strong for tariff announcements that were the opposite of what happened 10 days ago.
That's what we're dealing with with D.C. and what we might as well just call tariff mania.
And you know, we think of all that.
We can also tell you that, well, this is not good news.
Oil prices were up again today.
The good news is did not hurt the market today, but they have hurt the market recently.
What has been very weak?
Airlines, they're bouncing today.
Do you know why they're bouncing today?
Because they have dropped, let's see.
Well, let me put it best.
in the last one, two, three, three and a half weeks,
American Airlines has gone from $17.11 to $13.38 in three and a half weeks.
Why is airlines bouncing today?
Because Delta, in that same amount of time, has gone from 95 to 78.
Why is airlines bouncing today?
Because in that same period, United has gone from 135.
108 by the way that's inclusive of today's bounce that's why that's why you get
bounces simple as that but what you have to decipher is it just a bounce or is it
something that can last a while I can tell you this second to me my eyes looks like
oversold bounce what else bounce today well cruise lines are
green. Not much, but you know why cruise lines are green today? Because Royal Caribbean in that
same three and a half weeks has gone from 334 to 266, including today's bounce. Carnival
cruise lines has gone from 30 and a quarter to $23.65, including today's bounce. So we're
getting some bounces and some things that have been absolutely trashed. What has my
interest is with the market better today what isn't bouncing united rentals down
another 10 bucks and as we explained to yesterday there are certain economic names
that we really focus on that we think about a lot because they are so economical
down another 10 bucks today and in that time it's gone from 11709
you ready for this, to $9.78, $200.
United Rentals.
And of course, it's not just that name.
There are others that we mentioned in the last couple of days.
I noticed W.W. Granger today breaking support today with, by the way, the market up today.
So we still have some hmms with the market up today.
A lot of jello moving on the plate.
You got bounces in some of the weak areas.
You got, hey, little bounces in semiconductors, little bounces in artificial intelligence stocks.
I noticed today something like Cerebross, a recent IPO at 185 that they opened up at 380.
It's 184 today, up 11 bucks.
Do you know why it's up 11?
Because in the last 10 days, it dropped 70 bucks.
and I can tell you
it is not a recipe for good things
when you drop 70 and just bounce 11
unless you're good enough to buy it yesterday
while it's getting spanked and you made 11 bucks today
well you get my point
we're talking
we're looking for
major trends in the Dow today
Caterpillars up 13 which by the way
is 70
8590 Dow points
wise Caterpillar
are up today because in the last three and a half weeks 935 down to 791 including today's
bounce that's what we mean by that so you got to be very very careful about bounces you want to
get trends correct simple as that and we'll keep doing what we do and try to figure things out
You got a little bounce today in J.B. Hunt. It's a trucker.
Why is it bouncing today? Because it just went from 300 to 260.
And that includes today bounce.
Am I boring yet?
I hope not because we are making the most important point about trends and figuring out whether it's meaningful.
What else today?
well blowups earnings in the past weeks we have had some strong earnings gaps to the upside and we have
one big one today to the upside which but wildly but we have some maybe some important names
to the downside first off on the upside dell dang first off big numbers big numbers but you know what
Dell did today. It basically in the first few minutes opened up $484.
Within 20 more minutes, it had dropped, not making this up, $52 from $484.00, and that's on a big
earnings gap. It was up about 60 at the open and gave 50 of it back.
And guess what it's done by the close?
Back up 67 on the day.
Amazing.
Round-tripper, a reversal of the reversal for Dell.
And as we have said to you, Dell was our number one relative strength name.
Not a prediction.
We would just tell you what's been the strongest relative strength in technology.
It was Dell and L-I-T-E.
Dell showed its wares today.
Good earnings, good revenue.
I take that back.
Great earnings and great revenue growth.
Let's see if it sticks.
Up next.
What was the other side?
I'm Gary.
This is the one only Investor's Edge.

Hey, this promises to be fun.
Investors Edge.
The last bastion of quality products.
programming with Gary Coltbaum it doesn't get better than this so and by the way this is what
we deal with a lot of jello moving on the plate earnings so we told you about Dell strong and all
things being equal if the market stops crapping out this thing may get going even more but what else
today how about symbol CRDO this has been one of these names semi-carc
conductor type AI, this, AI, that, that you had to own. And I must tell you, the earnings and
sales look pretty strong. I've yet to look at guidance because the stock was down $41 today or
20% to $165, completely breaking down. It was already in bad shape, but really completely
busted at this point in time. What else? Well, how strong?
as strong as the software bin. Pretty darn good. MDB today, down $59 or 13.5%. And that busts down.
More important name that I believe is more important is Palo Alto Networks.
Down 9% or 33 in change, easily breaking that all important 50-day moving average today.
And what did that do?
Well, we remember when others had good moves in software and you had big sympathy move to the upside?
Well, let's start with Palantir.
That's software, by the way.
Palantir recently, gapped up and kept moving, and then it built this little shelf.
We call it a stair step, and it broke above the stair step.
That's good news.
It's just broken right back below.
Bye-bye.
Right back below the stair step, it's a goner.
Simple as that.
Bye-bye.
Palantir.
Just letting you know.
And why do we bring that up?
Because it's one of those names that's of import.
Quite the import.
What else?
Symbol N-E-T breaks the 50-day.
Another software name.
F-T-N-T-N-E-T.
Fortunet breaks the 50 day today, software security.
So sympathy moves to the downside.
CrowdStrike was down 11 bucks today.
And the best way to describe this stock, it went from 190 to 230 down to 203 and four days.
Happy days.
Tough way to play.
And Snowflake was down 13 today, but they report any moment.
So that can change.
So that can change.
The financials bounced a little bit today.
And may I state for the record, there's some financial stocks that are in pretty decent shape.
Nothing's really going right now.
But in what we call good patterns to possibly get going, not everything, there's plenty not good.
And I must tell you some of the foreign banks better than ours as far as relative strength.
Advanced declines have been very bad.
Much better today. New yearly highs, yearly lows. Two to one, two to one, new yearly lows over new yearly highs today. Again. But better than yesterday. And just a little better bouncing tone today. Dow was up $2.95. What you had today was Caterpillar up 13 and that's been trashed recently. And again, that's like,
13 of them is about 80 some odd dow points and really not much else up that big but when you have
the American Express up 5 which is 1.5% that's about 35 40 Dow points when you have Johnson and Johnson
up 4 that's 30 Dow points and Vida and Viti up 7 that baby still trading like a small cap
that's 50 Dow points so you got a Dow up 295 but the most important
important thing that happened today with the Dow.
The most important thing that happened today with the Dow.
Guess where it dropped down to yesterday?
The 50-day moving average.
Guess where it held back in July, the 50-day moving average.
Guess where it bounced today?
The 50-day moving average.
So, good to see.
Will it continue to hold?
We'll find out.
But we have the 30 stocks in the Dow on watch.
And there are some, Caterpillar was the best today.
And it looks like crap.
So we'll keep you prized.
It's a mushy market.
We're in September.
We're not so big on that about September has to be bad and all that.
But we're in recognition of it.
And we'll deal with it and see how it goes.
it all's going to go back to again oil prices and yields and oil did finish up today yields were flat today
yeah yields were flat so not very thrilled with that but I will tell you this yields now the yields are
overbought so they can pull back and that would be good news and oil prices definitely on near-term
overboard they can pull back but of course that's all news-driven stuff and we'll see how
that goes. The president's threatening annihilation Iran. We know he's lying. He's not going to
annihilate Iran. He's not going to do any nuclear thing. It's the boy who cried wolf times
a thousand now. And I think everybody knows it out there. Even the people that love it. It's for me
quite tiresome. We don't want to hear this crap anymore. We'd rather him conduct a war without
social media, but whatever.
And we'll see how it plays out.
All I can tell you is Iran was knocking the crap out of us,
and we were knocking the crap out of them last night.
They were going after our bases, and I don't know.
I have to verify everything this president says,
but he said we knocked out a couple of things.
We'll see.
There is just no way in Haiti's.
Isn't it Haiti?
Instead of hell?
there's no way
no way
that he's going to
this president's going to escalate
in a ridiculous way again
not ridiculous I take that back
the way we did at the outset
no way
unless
Iran does something really stupid
and who knows
they're capable of stupidity
and Keisha do not know
the president is telling the truth
when he says Iran's economy
is in the crapper
inflation is skyrocketed.
You got to think, you would think there would be some sort of crying uncle by Iran.
It ain't happening.
And you can go put in the words in search right now.
What's going on with the Iran economy?
Inflation skyrocketing, economy screwed.
Yet, they don't give up.
Very weird. Hey, up next, what else we got for you? Plenty. This is the one only Investors Edge.
You're listening to. America is talking. Investors Edge.
He's got to be pleased with that. The crowd is just on his feet here. He's a Cinderella boy.
With Gary Colbomb. It comes highly recommended. You're going to feel better if you talk to him.
And welcome once again to Investors Edge. Thanks for being with us today. So just so you know, because when we do this show,
right after the close we pre-tape,
Snowflake in the aftermarket.
Get this.
Closed, the stock just recently has gone from 341 to 306.
It's 360 in the aftermarket.
We're up now almost 18%.
Big move.
I haven't looked at their numbers.
On the other end, network appliance closed at 181.
I got it at 166.
By the way, this is what we have to deal with.
Let's see what else I got in the aftermarket,
just to show you how crazy things are.
Five below, one of the stronger retails.
Closed at 243.
I got at 249, not the biggest the moves.
How about Broadcom?
Have they reported yet?
It's up two bucks.
I'm not sure if they reported.
And of course, that stock has been hit,
really hard. Snowflake beats by 17 cents, beats on revenues, guidance. I can't see the whole thing.
And I'm looking to see if in real time what happened with Broadcom. I don't know if they
reported yet. I'm looking. No, I don't think broadcom's reported yet, but they're still
showing up a little.
How about this one?
This is a company that is involved supposedly with AI and construction, all that.
Stock is down 50% since late June.
50.
That's a 50.
It's up 35 bucks to 448.
It was 806 in June.
It's right now 448 in the after market.
So that's no great shake.
if you ask me. So we're still waiting on Broadcom and that's really the more important one
if you ask me about it. But just a lot of mush, not a lot of setups. It's a good time to real,
what we're just, Dell, big sore thumb for me now. It was a big sore thumb for me coming
into today, but you're not playing anything before earnings. And again, it was up 60 near the open,
and then it was only up 10, and then it finishes up more than 60.
So that's welcome to my world on a day like today.
But we're not going to take our eyes off of oil prices and yields.
They are defining force in the markets, and if they continue higher,
will not be good news.
Simple as that.
The Dow was up $2.95.
It was down $4.50 yesterday or something like that.
The S&P up 35, NASDAQ 118, NASDAQ 166.
The Russell bounced a little bit more than 1%.
And as we told you, the Russell just recently really broke the important 50-day moving average.
So that bounce, good to see.
Advanced declines better.
2,900 up, almost 1,700 down, 3,200 up on the NASDAQ, 600 down.
better and the new yearly highs new yearly low still not good two to one to the negative on both
the new york and nasdaq but little improvement from yesterday uh the socks was up 50 good to see
and viti was up seven was up 10 that's for the mega cap of mega caps it trades like a small cap
um anything else stick i mentioned to you the steel stocks uh and again the look we we we
We try not to pull any punches here.
I am so sick and tired of Trump and his tariffs.
I can't begin to tell you.
And I don't run companies that produce stuff that are tariff.
They must be shooting the middle finger back at this guy every day because nobody knows what's next.
Today, semiconductors.
Out of nowhere, they leak semiconductors.
We want semiconductors made here.
Even though the cost to do it here versus other places would be ridiculously higher.
Out of nowhere.
And you remember the Liberation Day crap last April, right?
The April before.
Companies would have been shutting down in a week if they weren't forced to change Trump's crazy.
And guess what forced them?
a crashing market and a stoppage of commerce.
But they're back again.
And of course, the mass confusion.
The mass confusion.
Canada announces tariffs on us and Trump's pissed because it's bad.
But we announced tariffs on them and Trump's happy because tariffs are good.
So which is it?
We got two more years plus of confusion, unfortunately.
Speaking of confusion, I'm just letting you know.
I think I mentioned yesterday, if I didn't, I mentioned it first time.
If I mentioned yesterday, I'm saying it again.
I think I mentioned it.
The Atlanta Fed has GDP for this quarter, 4.8.
And by the way, we just started September.
That's a huge quarter, but you can back in and back out imports, exports,
to make it, not to make it look better, but makes it look better one time.
I don't know.
All I can tell you is when I see airlines, cruise lines, hotels,
economically sensitive stuff like United Rentals and GE and Eaton and Emerson
and all these names getting clunked, I'm weirded out.
Broadcom's getting smacked in the aftermarket.
Closed at 367 right now, 340.
I'll have to take a look.
But by the way, these things can change very quickly because the market's insane.
Anything else, I'll repeat myself.
We're watching oil prices and we're watching yields.
And I'm trying to be careful with my words.
I'm trying to be careful.
Remember how I blasted Janet Yellen under Biden?
saying that I cannot believe she's the Treasury Secretary.
And she's the one who said that inflation was transitory and don't worry and all that.
I don't think this Treasury Secretary is that much better.
I'm just letting you know.
And again, none of this is personal.
They work for us.
Just remember that.
They don't sound like they work for us, but they all work for us.
you do know it is we the people not we the government they work for us he impresses me not
and some of the things out of his mouth impresses me not i wish i had better things to say
but they impress me not all of them all of them i wish i can say better you know who impresses me i
like how the transportation secretary has been reactive to things that have happened
transportation wise what's his name um duffy transportation secretary uh duffy that's right
Sean Duffy. He impresses me. Marco Rubio impresses me, though he has to parrot a lot of things out of
Trump's mouth that I know he doesn't believe. Rubio impresses me. Also, he will make a good president
in my humblest opinions. And he's just doing his job right now. So,
I'm betwixt in between as far as markets.
They're range bound with some small and midcaps under the 50-day.
The semiconductors have been, I think they're down 20-some-odd percent
and a lot of areas under a little bit of stress.
Up next.
News of the day, whatever else today.
This is the one only investors' edge.
You're listening to.
What are we waiting for?
Well, what are you waiting for?
One, two, ready, go.
And welcome once again to Investor's Edge.
With Gary Culper.
And welcome once again to Investors Edge.
You know, part of my job when earnings come out is to try and do the why.
Why is something getting smacked?
Why is something skyrocket?
I'm looking at Snowflake here.
closed at 306.
It's 376 in the aftermarket.
They report earnings and they beat and that's fine and dandy.
They beat pretty decent.
Revenues rose 35%, which was a little better than expected.
And then they throw out guidance.
And I'm looking for something that sticks out like a sore thumb
because this stock is up 70 bucks.
the aftermarket and I must tell you I'm not seeing it but you just never know what the big
institution see that drives it and what will happen is there'll be a report coming out saying
in the aftermarket so and so because of so and so but I'm looking at estimates yeah it looks
like 27 they're saying a dollar 93 am I right and
saying that? Just trying to figure it out. Do you know why? Because some of the greatest
winners of all time started with big gaps to the upside because something changed, something got
better, doing something right, a new product, new management, new this and new that. So they're
saying that they're telling you, in 27 earnings will be a dollar.
$2.93 and in 28, it'll be $2.73.
So that's a nice little move, but I got to tell you, I'm not seeing it, but I will find out tonight.
That is part of the job that we do.
That's going to be quite interesting for me as I move forward tonight when I do my work.
But on the other end, a broadcom, that's very important.
Closed at 367.
It's 349.
Now network appliance closed at 180.
I got it at 164.
So, ew.
So big, ew.
And software got roughed up today for a change, especially some of the better software.
It's just a very mushy market.
it. That's the best way I can explain it. You got bounces today in some of the weakest stuff.
Standing out though as relative strength-wise, I got some foreign banks at New Yearly highs.
No, seriously. Some foreign banks symbol I-N-G group. New Yearly High today. UBS. Close.
How about something like Banko Santander?
Close.
How about Deutsche Bank right at New Yearly Highs?
How about a couple of Japanese banks?
Mitsubishi Financial, symbol MUFG, New Yearly High.
How about here's another Japanese bank, Sumitomo, right at highs.
So that's going on.
While our regional banks have been trashed recently, they bounced a little bit today.
But foreign banks, and I got to look that up, why?
That one's on the baffling side.
Because you know what I read about some of these countries?
Japan?
Massive amount of debt.
Their yields have been spiking big time.
They're intervening with their currency, the yen.
That's going on there.
the UK I'm told is in recession
that's going on there
but they're banks
I'm going to have to spend some time on that bad boy
I'll be on a nine hour flight tomorrow night
then I'll have my computer out and trying to figure this crap out
why are people calling
what else
just a lot of moving parts
just a lot of news to deal with
just a lot of social media
posts to deal with.
That's what we got going right now.
The best news is we're kicking butt.
Job numbers came in, not good.
Not good today, the ADP.
We'll have Friday.
Why is, gee whiz.
So we got a lot to deal with from them.
where today
6 billion was added to our debt today
$6 billion today
this is what we're dealing with
so a lot of jello and the aftermarket
we'll see how that plays out
Broadcom again not good
network appliance not good
they're fumbling and stumbling around
but snowflake holy crap-a-matic
we'll have to look at that one
the good news is
there's so many areas in bad shape, but the big indices are down a few percent from the highs.
That's all.
A few percent from the highs.
We'll let you know if that worsens.
NASDAQ 100, just under the 50-day, NASDAQ just above.
And Labor Day is Monday.
Day off.
Good enough.
As always.
