Thanks being with us today. Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening. It is Wednesday. It is April 17th.
Starting point is 00:00:52 It is 2024. Hope you are having a good day. As always, this is a show about everything that affects you. used to do nothing but the markets. But with all the interlopers and all the crazy and the debt and the deficits and the stupidity emanating from that little initial place called DC, we cover it all. With no agenda, no ulterior motive or any bias because we can't stand any of them. We've lost any love or any like for any of them.
Starting point is 00:01:22 34 trillion in debt tells us so. Two to three trillion dollars in deficits yearly tells us so. One trillion plus a year of our taxpayer dollars going towards interest tells us so, amongst other things. But first, before we get going because it was an interesting day. And those that have been listening to the show, we have been guiding you very, very well. What we have been doing is telling you about the deterioration in the markets, as of recent. And we've been telling you what to avoid and what to be careful about.
Starting point is 00:02:06 And we've actually been telling you what we've been doing because of that. We hope you are listening because today was another day that is of note. Starting point is 00:02:49 of an aggressive cancer 18 months ago and doctor's not given him a year 18 months later later? Free! And of course he woke me up twice last night as he nudges himself at two in the morning against my leg, because he loves laying next to me. That's my dog. I only wish you have a dog just like my dog. He is man's best friend. He is, well, my sons are my best friends. My wife is... You get the point. Okay, I wasn't sure where I wanted to start today because I have some pointed comments on something going on in Washington, but I think more important for you is to start with a part of the market that means a hell of a lot. Technology, semiconductors.
Starting point is 00:03:55 I have told you that on March 8th, we thought that major league reversal, in the NASDAQ and especially the semiconductors, were going to be a high as it just after a good run felt like an exhaustion reversal day. Just a characteristic we have studied throughout the years that doesn't happen very often, but when it does, it's like a sore thumb. And since that time, we've had a bunch of names breaking down,
Starting point is 00:04:29 but a bunch of big names holding up that make the indices better, than most. The Semiconductor Index, the all-important Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, better known as the Sox, has traded just a wee bit below the all-important 50-day moving average coming into today. And the reason being it's holding up, well, you have some things that are gross, but things like NVIDIA, holding up, not breaking out, not ascending anymore, but range-bound, broadcom, range-bound, the equipment makers, ASML Holdings, Applied Materials, KLA Tencore, Lamb Research, rangebound, arm holdings, rangebound. They all freaking cracked today and cracked badly and on an earnings report, sending the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index down three and a quarter.
Starting point is 00:05:34 percent very much below that all-important 50-day moving average, down 153 points. The culprit was that ASML holdings. ASML used to be called ASM lithography. What they did is, just so you know, that it is a foreign company Dutch, and what they do, they report overnight. I got an alert, I think it was three in the morning, that they missed estimates. and let me just be clear about their numbers so you have an understanding. Over the last four quarters, earnings are up.
Starting point is 00:06:11 45, 21, 17, and down 37. A major deceleration. Sales up 32, 25, 16, and then a minus 22. A major deceleration. ASML Holdings at the close today. Let me make sure I got this number right because it actually moves in the aftermarket a little bit. Down $69 today to 907 and change, down 7% on volume of 3.7 million.
Starting point is 00:06:44 Trades usually about a million and 70. That cracked the 50 day. Now, this is equipment stuff, so we then look at what else gets affected. Arm holdings, which is not necessarily the equipment, but has something to do with ASML. down $14.66 today, down 12%, completely breaking support around that 120 level, completely getting away from the 50-day moving average on the underside. Applied materials and equipment maker down 4.6% today. And just broke the 50-day at the close today.
Starting point is 00:07:28 Little pickup in volume, but we call that a little bit of rolling over. 10 core KLAC really breaks the 50 day today on a pickup in recent volume not overall and rolling over lamb research down 51 bucks today on a 77% increase in in volume down 5.29% cracks the 50 day today so some of the big names that were holding up so well broke today on the big near-term basis, joining a lot of other tech, but not just that. Broadcom, AVGO, broke the 50 day today.
Starting point is 00:08:16 AVGO, NVIDIA. You know, again, they open up the market hot today. NVIDIA, not making this up, on the open today, pretty much hit 887, closed at 840, 47 points reversal and finished within $4
Starting point is 00:08:42 of the 50 day moving average Nvidia I mentioned Broadcom Micron which has been strong down $5.44 today 4.47% that's been stronger
Starting point is 00:08:57 but did break the 21 day moving average today I'll stop there. A miserable day for the semis and in a market where we've lost the software and a lot of software names, now the big semis trouble. We already know about AMD that broke a while ago down another seven bucks today. And by the way, if I'm not incorrect, I got AMD. Excuse me, I take that back. AMD was down almost $10 today. It's just updating for me right now. So just letting you know another pin was pulled today and it's the big semiconductors today some worse than
Starting point is 00:09:44 others today on top of the software stocks that have already gotten into trouble today those were in the last few weeks just let you know keep in mind they all are going to be porting earnings in the next 30 days could change the playing field, don't know. All we can tell you, a little bit more of the die was cast today in the all-important technology slash semiconductor arena. Tomorrow shall be another day. But on a technical basis today was I-C-K. Or I can say yuck, Y-U-C-K. Wish I had better news. I will state for the record, some of these earnings reports are just plain terrible. And we were highlighting for you some of these things that have been moving up on terrible earnings. Well, this one moved down on terrible earnings.
Starting point is 00:10:53 Again, tomorrow's another day. I don't know if they bounce them or not. I don't know if they take them down even further quickly. I just know they cracked some important areas of support today. and that's that. On a bad earnings report. Up next, what else went on today? Because it was a whipsaw day.

Starting point is 00:14:58 With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. So let me give out a couple of numbers. The NASDAQ was down. almost 182 points. The NASDAQ 100 was down 220 points. We already mentioned the semiconductor index. The NASDAQ now is a decent amount below the 50-day moving average. Today was another distribution day, which is high volume drop. The same for the NASDAQ 100, as we mentioned the semiconductors.
Starting point is 00:15:36 These are further worsening of the complexion that we have been highlighting for you because of the software because of other things. And we've also been stating they better not get the big guys because they are such a big influence on the indices. They got some of the big guys today, notwithstanding earnings to come for the rest of them going forward. But just, if you want a bad day, this is how you define it for these areas. What we're also going to be watching, we're already know Apple's own private little bear market right now. We already know Tesla's even in a much bigger. Apple is not down 20% from the high, so let's not call it a bear. Let's call the bare phase. Tesla, bear market continues to worsen. Important SAP,
Starting point is 00:16:31 SAP, just broke the 50-day five days ago. It's a big software company out of Germany. Oracle gaps up nicely on earnings, fails miserably, the group. Microsoft broke the 50-day-to-day pretty cleanly as they head into earnings next week. Weaker software stocks. Amazon's been the rock of Gibraltar. I'm going to still stay that way, though that was down a couple of bucks today. And Google got double upgrades today. That's holding up pretty good.
Starting point is 00:17:03 AMD has been grossed out, a broadcom trouble. Salesforce.com breaks badly on Monday because they're looking to buy somebody and all we can tell you some of the biggies are coming in and just letting you know. Just letting you know.
Starting point is 00:17:22 We told you the day after March 8th was a Monday we sold our, excuse me, I take that back. The day after March 8th was the 11th. And that's when we sold all our tech except for meta and then I must tell you, we
Starting point is 00:17:44 we bought a little bit of QQQ and stopped out before you can say boo. And that was a damn good move. We actually thought that'd be one more run of the mega caps and very quickly. See you wouldn't want to be you. So just letting you know, worsening. Now what was driving up the wall today? Let me just tell you that Dow was trading like a penny stock. and what I mean by that is, and I'm not making this up,
Starting point is 00:18:13 the Dow went up 156 points on one little move today in like three minutes, and in four minutes it gave it all back. But versus the NASDAQ, NASDAQ 100, the SOX was a tiptoe through the tulips today, and it was only down 45 points. And the reason being was a select few names earnings driven. What do I got for you?
Starting point is 00:18:37 Goldman had a very good reaction to earnings but reversed and had a bad day yesterday right back up seven today holding it's holding united health which was absolutely trashed recently was up like um uh 20 something yesterday finished up 14 back up 10 today those two really helped out McDonald's that stock's been trashed recently bounced a little bit i wouldn't conclude too much for that but that helped today now the big weakness, travelers. The insurance stocks have been topping out one after the other recently. Travelers reports earnings. Whatever they said the market didn't like, travelers. A stodgy, great insurance company. Down 7.4% today, down 16, cracking the 50 day on the gap. That didn't help
Starting point is 00:19:27 the Dow today. But really, the concentration of my thoughts today, they really came after them semiconductors and I can promise you we will have a headwind in the market if the semiconductors keep going lower notice if they because we have lots of earnings to come out but man oh man that was a juicy move to the downside today on volume on ASML and we'll see if they decide to gap it up tomorrow
Starting point is 00:19:59 remember it's Dutch so they gap it up gap it down all that fun stuff Yay. But not good news. Strength today? Well, let me tell you a couple of things that are actually good news fundamentally. Oil prices drop $2.60 today. If they stay down, about 10 days, two weeks, the price is the pump's going to come down? Let's hope that stays down. And yields drop today. 0.74 to 4585 on the 10 year. wait a minute Gary aren't they telling us that tech acts well when yields come down well that's what they've been telling you just remember i would suggest to you the most overdue correction in the history of time is technology it just do and now we'll see what they decide to do with it we have no idea except to tell you If it stays below the 50-day moving average, bad if it gets above opportunity.
Starting point is 00:21:10 But on top of that, just a lot of breakdowns in the last couple of weeks, a lot of stocks break in the 50-day moving average in the last couple of weeks. More things today. I saw the hotels breaking today. A few other sundry things. The transports are getting mauled. Go look at the – let me give you the best. The Dow transports in the last – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12,000,
Starting point is 00:21:34 trading days 16253 to 15,000 in just 12 training days what did they come after today j b hunt the trucker yonked down 8% what they do with other truckers in sympathy yonked what was up today transport wise ua l very good numbers that a loss but better and expected was up uh think four foreign change today. Make sure that number before I walk away from it because I'm showing somewhere, I'm showing it up seven. Is this up three bucks in the aftermarket? I'm not sure. I have no idea. I'm looking for it. Anyway, good day for United Airlines. Got some reaction on what I said about Delta yesterday. Now I got some people who work for Delta thanking me, emailing me and thanking me. Well, we only tell you like it is. If they don't do good, we try to not try to tell you
Starting point is 00:22:43 bad things or companies. Every now and then we get P-Oed. But I thought Delta was special and the Atlanta airport quite special. Yeah, UAL looks like it's trading. I don't know. It had a good day today. But again, sore thumb those semis today. Some other sore thumbs of building construction stocks that was strong, breaking down, not good. Gold a little bit weird. Gold was up yesterday, but the gold miners were down. Today, gold was down. The gold miners were up.

Starting point is 00:26:37 And just over... Ugh, gross. Blah. Blah. And why are the semiconductor so important? Well, they're in everything. They're in so many things at this point. And I didn't go through the whole thing ASML said,
Starting point is 00:26:58 but I did go through the important parts and... Slowing. And did their usual... Well, it'll get better. Yeah, sure. Okay, thanks. You didn't know this would happen. So why do we buy...
Starting point is 00:27:09 believe you about things will get better. And more importantly, the market did not think things are going to get better. That's the most important part of the equation. They can say whatever they want. The market said, nah. As I stated, fundamentally yields down nicely today. Good to see. Oil prices down two and a half bucks today. Very good to see. And let's hope that continues. I'd be wary about wary about oil stocks if oil prices continue to come down. And oil stocks have been coming in after a nice trend move. Somewhat on a normal pullback right now. New highs on the NASDAQ. New highs. Well, I better start with new lows. There were 217 new lows on the NASDAQ today. 217 new yearly lows. New yearly highs? I don't have any.
Starting point is 00:28:25 As John Vernon said, an animal house, 0.0. On the New York today, New Yearly Highs, I got something called Kupang, Korean something or other they do, and that's it for New Highs on the New York. There was some names that hit new highs early in the day but finished down, so I don't consider them New Yearly Highs. New Yearly lows on the New York, 73. So one new high in the whole market, we'll say two, and almost 300 new yearly lows.
Starting point is 00:29:11 Advanced declines not as bad today. 1921 New York, 1525 on NASDAQ, but NASDAQ was a misery today. And that will have me watching very closely as we head into earning season. This week, any more important NASDAQ names showing up, on my list. I don't think
Starting point is 00:29:34 so. Netflix tomorrow after the close. Taiwan semi after the close tomorrow. So Netflix is important and I must say that their estimates
Starting point is 00:29:55 look pretty good. Let's hope they beat them estimates. That'd be Netflix. So tough sledding today. I did a webcast early in the day because I'm the king of legal pads. What I do is I make lists.
Starting point is 00:30:14 And I'll literally write down 500 symbols if there are 500 symbols trading above the 50-day moving average. But we had this one page of legal pad that were what we call lower beta Dow type names that were all trading above the 50-day moving average. I think I have crossed off about 85% of them in the last week to 10 days. You know what that tells you? Deterioration. And remember what we try to explain to, and I know it's tough to get your wrapped around it if you really don't understand some of the things we're saying. But just think physically, you cannot ascend as a stock price
Starting point is 00:30:57 if you are trading below the 50-day moving average. You can't go into bull mode. if you're trading below. Doesn't mean a death knell that you're going to crash if you're below, but you get that opportunity to worsen. Above the 50-day moving average, nothing bad can happen as long as you stay above and only potentially good to happen, ascension.
Starting point is 00:31:23 And that's why we look at this area so importantly, and when I see 80 to 85% of these low beta names from the housing stocks, the housing-related stocks, to some of the big regionals that were actually sticking in there, to Marriott, the hotel, to a bunch of insurance stocks,
Starting point is 00:31:41 building construction stocks, Fassanel, some banks from Canada, travelers today. It tells you a deterioration in the market. And when you see 20 names from a group, it tells you the group's getting
Starting point is 00:32:01 in trouble. And when you see 20 names out of 30 for them the Dow do it, uh-oh, the Dow. I'm not saying there's 20 names in the Dow, there's still plenty that are in bad shape in the Dow, there's still a few in good shape. But it just gives us a really good feel
Starting point is 00:32:19 for the market. And that was not good to see over the last, we'll call it 10 days to two weeks of trading in differing areas. And now the big key now for the big indices is whether these big names that have such influence react well
Starting point is 00:32:43 to earnings. And you know what that is? That's Amazon, Google, Facebook, Microsoft. NVIDIA is a little farther out. Apple, Tesla, Netflix, and the like. And they're coming up in the next two weeks. We shall be ready. I'll tell you what scares the hell out of me is Apple.
Starting point is 00:33:04 It ramped up strong for two days on chips for the Mac. Ramped, AI, gave it all back in three. That's not normal for an Apple stock. That was already in what we call downtrend. And then there's Tesla. We guarantee you when a company is getting rid of 10% of the workforce, It's not because things are good. We always want you to remember that.
Starting point is 00:33:40 Remember, I'm Mr. Logic. Getting rid of a lot of people means you don't need those people because you're selling less of your wares. So Tesla and the whole electric vehicle, BS, brought to you by the government trying to force you and giving you 7,500 of other people's money to buy them. and by the way Tesla still sells a ton just the
Starting point is 00:34:10 trajectory of what they're selling how much and at the price they're selling has been going south now maybe they're going to come out with another car and I know they are that sells like hotcakes and
Starting point is 00:34:25 turns it around that definitely could happen all I can tell you the stock itself has shown nothing zero Fungi Nata of big institutional buying in any way, shape, or form
Starting point is 00:34:41 in quite a while and it's those institutions that drive stocks up and down so Tesla ain't happening just yet if that changes we'll gladly let you know
Starting point is 00:34:56 as of this second yikes double yikes and of course then there is Rivian and some other EV stocks that have just absolutely crumbled absolutely crumbled and we want you to remember this
Starting point is 00:35:23 we gave you warning shots from the top in Rivian the top the day it topped we warned the world on TV and our listening audience. You never want to pull out a $20 bill and trade it in for a dollar.
Starting point is 00:35:46 And that's what it was. And that's Wall Street bringing things out at just ridiculous price. And hopefully, you were not caught. And that's a little bit about today. I really don't have anything great to tell you. There's a lot more earnings to come out. The good news is oil prices and yields down. Maybe that can be a buffer.
Starting point is 00:36:17 but at the close today all day, NASDAQ, NASDAQ 100, Miserable. At one point, the Dow rallied up up to 150 on the day. And the NASDAQ rallied from down 200 to only down 80. But you can tell had no traction and finished down 180. And it was an icky 180. Up next, news of the day, much more. I'm Gary.

In the news, this has nothing to do with anything, but I just thought this was the highlight of the day. And I'm not making this up, and they're actually showing a picture.
Starting point is 00:40:07 shocking new footage shows a woman wheeling a corpse in a Brazilian mall before pushing the corpse into a bank where she tried to withdraw money from the account and have the corpse sign a document to take the money out of the account about $3,200. She was arrested. I just thought that was one hell of a headline. NBA is banning somebody by the name of John Tate Porter for life for breaking the gaming rules and you can go read about it and boy oh boy if I guess they think it's true this guy deserves what he's going to get
Starting point is 00:40:54 or what he got in the news Biden calling for a tripling of tariffs on Chinese steel products what did we tell you about this man going to do anything and everything election year to make people happy. That makes the unions happy. Hey, keep the unions happy. We hated when Trump did it, and we hate it when Biden does it. Case closed. And we're supposedly electing these people as
Starting point is 00:41:20 president because they know how to negotiate with others, and they know how to get the job down with others, and they can sit down at the table with others and negotiate to the point where China's not longer dumping steel across the world, which screws us. No, the guy with the art of the deal couldn't get the job done, so tariffs. And just remember, regardless of Trump lying to you, we pay the tariffs, not China. Just remember that. Next, in the news, Marxist control-free Joe Biden is demanding. WNBA players get paid their fair share because Caitlin Clark is only getting paid $76,000 in a first year while an NBA rookie gets paid millions of dollars.
Starting point is 00:42:18 Let's see, Victor Wembenyama earned $12 million in the first year, which basically tells you exactly what I've been saying to you. The guy is a moron that is totally anti-business, has no understanding how things work. The difference between the NBA and the TV rights and all that fun stuff is like comparing a $100 bill to $1 bill, thus the salaries. The good news is for Kate and Lincarck, if she brings in the ratings, those numbers are going to go up. And the good news first, she's going to make millions of her endorsements. So did Joe Biden shut the hell up, get out of the way of business. You know nothing about the business world. Go back to your corruption and you're spending us into hell and leave us to hell alone.
Starting point is 00:43:02 Thank you. how was that one in the news Google staffers are arrested for doing some sort of protest no no tech for apartheid
Starting point is 00:43:20 and of course against Israel yeah Israel apartheid they just had 100,000 Muslims praying in Israel during Ramadan apartheid Hamas, if you're gay, strings you up and kills you. apartheid.
Starting point is 00:43:40 Yeah, apartheid. Schmucks. These people don't even know what they're talking about. Let me finish off with this. The Republicans went in to impeach this Majoris guy, the head of Homeland Security. Another dufus who actually went on to Capitol Hill and actually said, we don't know where a lot of these migrants are and we don't know if they're bad or good. But the Republicans decide to impeach him in the House, but nothing going to happen because, you know, the White House is Joe Biden, Senate's not Republican.
Starting point is 00:44:16 And all I was thinking to myself, and you know, I can't stand Trump. That first impeachment of Trump was a scam. He didn't do anything to get impeached, but the Democrats were in power and they went after him. And because they had the numbers, they were able to impeach him, but not take him out. And you can go read about that first impeachment. and I'm thinking to myself the Republicans are a bunch of wimps. It really should be an eye for an eye.
Starting point is 00:44:45 Oh, you impeach Trump for nothing that first is go rank? It was nothing. It was a phone call. That's all it was. That's all it was. And remember, I have no bias. I don't want Trump.
Starting point is 00:44:55 I don't want Trump or Biden run for president. But it was nothing. But yet the number one job of a president is to defend the citizen and defend the country. And Joe Biden has left us in hell. We don't know who has come across the border. We don't know what their attentions are. And they don't even know about that.
Starting point is 00:45:13 And they don't even know where a bunch of them are. But we do know some of them have murdered American citizens. And the media doesn't cover that because that would be bad for Joe Biden. And the media don't even cover when they talk about the border. They don't even mention Biden. If I was in government, I would have went to impeach Biden. Not Majorcas. He's meaningless.
Starting point is 00:45:33 I would have made a statement that the number one, number two, number three, number four, Number five job of a president is defend the country and defend the citizenry. And one part of that is your border. And Joe Biden on purpose has opened our border to over 7 million people coming in and lying about it for three years. That's my take. Should impeach him made a statement. Have the media mad at you? We don't care.
Starting point is 00:45:57 They're always mad at one side. Defend the citizenry. That's why we always talk about what they're doing in some of these cities where they just don't defend the citizenry. they let the crooks out crooks arrested 30 times out for the 31st time and they do it again it's insanity it's illogical it makes it so easy for me to call myself
Starting point is 00:46:22 Mr. Logic and we don't know if they're in your city and when I say they I'm talking bad and just remember I'm the immigration guy I want as many immigrants coming in as possible that are going to come here work within the rule law, build families, do great things.
Starting point is 00:46:42 But it should be controlled and it should be legal. Simple as that. Just like so many people have done it throughout the years. But no, not under this guy. And it wouldn't be easy, but he could have done a lot better job, but he did not care. Impeach Biden. That said, have a great evening drive carefully. I'll be on with Stuart Varney tomorrow, 10 a.m.
