Starting point is 00:00:33 Investor's Edge with Gary Coltbaum. Straight talk about you and your money. Now from the BizTalk Studios, here is Gary Cultbaum. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. I'm Gary Colbaum, your host. A thanks for being with us today. Glad you're here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening. It is Wednesday, May 17, 2023, and this is serious talk on you
Starting point is 00:00:57 and everything that affects you in the markets and your money, the economy, and your jobs. and everything else under the sun. It's serious talk with a little comedy injected. We only throw in a little comedy when markets are ripe and doing better because when markets suck, we don't want to be too comedic. Anyway, very good day today.
Starting point is 00:01:17 We'll explain. But first, if you do not get this radio show in your city, we'll post it at garyk.com. We'll also post it on our Twitter feed. And of course, you can go to Twitter and put our name in and follow us, or press the button at garyk.com and do the same. You can email me
Starting point is 00:01:33 Just Be Nice. Somebody emailed me yesterday and called me ignorant. It's one of these guys that think I'm the Antichrist and I said, you know, that's going to be the end of our conversation if you call me ignorant and he
Starting point is 00:01:51 then emails me back and says, well, you're just uninformed. Anyway, so here's where we want to start. We know you've been inundated with this whole debt ceiling con job. And let me be clear, and we take no joy in stating it this way. They are a bunch of con artists perpetuating a con onto you in order to further their political gains.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Let me explain. The Marxist party who believes screw you. we will put you in so much debt screw you it doesn't matter we will spend like crazy does not matter up yours they are proposing 6.8 trillion in federal spending this year that's up from 4.4 trillion the year before COVID over 50 about 54% growth of government it is sickening but they don't give a crap and what do they do the same old They use the same old. Oh, if we cut, you don't care about the elderly.
Starting point is 00:03:09 You don't care about the children. You're mean. You're nasty. It's a big lie. That whole thing is a gargantuan lie. They are massively increasing the size of government. It's a big, gigantic lie, and the president was outlying again today about his deficits. But then you got the other side.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Here's their stance. We're putting our foot down. down. Too much spending. Can't take it anymore. We want to stop the spending, the growth, the spending. You know what they're asking for? And this is how bad the Marxist party is, but this is how bad the Republicans are. They're just looking for a slowdown in the increase of the spending. Which guess what that means? Massive spending going forward, massive debt going forward. But the Republican got to show themselves as being, oh, we're conservative. We care about the taxpayer. No, they don't. They gave up all, all believability under Trump in his four years. Bush under his eight years. When in power, spend like a bunch of blankety blanks. When not in power, rip the other side. and that's how you get the $32 trillion of debt. We're headed to $50 trillion.
Starting point is 00:04:42 We're now going to have a $2 trillion deficit this year, a record breaker, though the president, this lying sack stands in front of the camera and says, I cut the deficit $1.7 trillion. Everybody knows all that happens is they stop the COVID spending. It's disgusting. We have a bunch of con artists in Washington, D.C.
Starting point is 00:05:06 they get worse every year. And eventually, as we repeat a thousand times, we don't know what the trigger's going to be. We don't know what point it's going to be. We don't know what date's going to be, but it's all going to blow up. We'll be ready because the market will tell us. But we're not there yet.
Starting point is 00:05:27 Simple as that. So the debt ceiling's a con. A, Janet Yellen's line to you stating that, oh, June 1st, we run out of money. No, they don't. It's a lie. They can pay their bills for, I can't begin to tell you how long. It's a lie. They create a crisis.
Starting point is 00:05:51 Oh, Social Security's not going to get paid. That's a lie. There's going to be no default. I'm guaranteeing you there's going to be no default. And that's that. They will cut a deal before the end of the world. Just letting you know. It was a gimmie.
Starting point is 00:06:10 and guess what today? All of a sudden they're talking about by Sunday. So that's that. It's all a bunch of political positioning. It's sickening. The only outcome of this is the size of our government, the control of our government, the oversight of our government,
Starting point is 00:06:33 the control freakism of our government gets larger. And we, what do we do? I'm voting our. No, I'm voting. I'm voting R, I'm voting D. They're all killing us. A bunch of them are committing crimes of insider trading and getting away with it, things we'd go to jail for. You and I would go to jail for what they do.
Starting point is 00:07:03 And by the way, they do it in plain sight, with no shame. The first trillion of our tax dollars this year is going to go towards interest on the debt they've created. And the longer they've been in D.C., the more culpable, I almost vomit every time I see Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell. They have been basically leadership forever. They are culprits. And I couldn't give a crap wet party they're in. But that's that because on the news that, oh, looks like something's doable by Sunday.
Starting point is 00:07:46 The broad market had a very good day today. you know the broad market that's been stinking it up our job is to figure out is it just another one of those one or two day wonders because as you know our definition of what we've seen in all these areas they're in downtrends of differing levels it's our job to figure out and interpret whether that looks like a good low or it doesn't look like much well we're going to give you what we perceived to be some changes today. What did not change is what we have been telling you what you needed to be around and be in. We have told you under no uncertain terms, big cap tech and recently in semiconductors. Guess what led today of big cap tech and semiconductors. But other things
Starting point is 00:08:42 showed up today. And we're going to tell you each and every one. And one of them, Maybe a surprise. We'll get to that in a bit. But we really hope you're listening. We take no joy in taking them on. But they've earned the ire. Our only wish is everybody who's in the tank of each side would just get out of the tank of each side and recognize there's no difference between the two. when it comes to the you, your money, the economy, and where they're headed. Now I know there's some differing on other things,
Starting point is 00:09:33 but there is no bigger crisis than what they are doing with the size of government and debt. It ain't climate change. That's a scam. That's a con. They started with global cooling. It warmed up. They went to global warming.
Starting point is 00:09:47 It cooled down. They went into a room and said, wait a minute, hold on. We can't be wrong all the time. What can we do? Oh, let's make it climate change. So if it heats up, oh, we're right. If it cools down, we're right. And don't worry, everybody loves a celebrity to go out and lie to them.
Starting point is 00:10:02 Oh, you got to care about climate change, and then they get into their big, gigantic SUV driven by their driver, to their private jet, to their 200-foot yacht, and then give you the big middle finger. Case closed. Yet people are in the tank. And of course, we can't have an independent party because they've created these two parties and the money,
Starting point is 00:10:29 no independent can get traction. No third party can get traction. They've created, you know where they built a wall? Right there. But we'll keep yapping, we'll keep talking. We've converted a lot of people to just get pissed off at all of them. What it accomplishes? I'm not so sure.
Starting point is 00:10:53 But that was today. They're laughing at us. I saw Biden laugh And I saw the who's the guy running the Republican Party now? He was laughing Blah blah blah blah Up next full market wrap Lots to cover

A lot of what I see is just like chronic bloating, chronic stomach aches. Like I get a stomach ache every time that I eat.
Starting point is 00:13:07 And it just becomes like a lifestyle where, oh, yeah, you know, I just, I have a stomachache every day. Or I'm constantly feeling like gassy. And all of those things are not something that generally, if you have a healthy gut, you should be living with. So that's when we deep dive. Hey, this promises to be fun. Investors Edge. The last bastion of quality programming. With Gary Coltbaum. It doesn't get better than this. Okay. So, let me go into a few things. just did the debt ceiling. That's number one. Number two. You know we always tell you that just
Starting point is 00:14:38 only a few people we really listen to on Wall Street. You know that, right? One of them is Paul Tudor Jones. So let me just tell you what Paul Tudor Jones is saying. He thinks that the Fed is done raising rates and they think he thinks stocks will finish higher this year. He's saying that based on that CPI has been declining 12 straight months after raising rates 10 times since March of 22. He said he's not rampantly bullish because he thinks it'll be a slow grind. He thinks this is before today, maybe some indigestion because of the debt ceiling, but it looks like, you know, the Morlocks in D.C. may have come to some whatever. He says valuations are high at 19, but there's no IPOs, nothing to come out.
Starting point is 00:15:53 And from a flow standpoint, that's constructive. So just letting you know what he says doesn't mean he's going to be right. May I state for the record, opinions are fluid. We'll try to stay on top of what they say. There's only a select few we listen to. And for sure, we don't listen to the charlatans. and unfortunately is a hell of a lot of them out there. Next I had to mention, and let's, uh, central Florida,
Starting point is 00:16:25 I just want to let you know that there's now a lot of markdowns on central Florida houses. I'm talking 500 and up, some serious markdowns to be had now. So people that cannot move their houses are finally moving on price. Next, I want to bring up Home Depot because this may be indicative of the market. Home Depot was down $12 yesterday on their earnings report. Finished only down six. Today was up 10.
Starting point is 00:17:16 So Home Depot is now up on a terrible earnings report and earnings guidance. What does that mean? I then want to mention that Target missed all their numbers, missed all their comps. The stock finished up $4 today. Whoa. What does that mean? When we look at markets, it's not the news. It's how things react to the news.
Starting point is 00:17:53 Maybe possibly could be. Notice those three. Because who knows tomorrow? Those type of reactions offer bad news, potentially some good news. If bad news is all factored into the market, that's actually good news for the market. And just remember when you have a Home Depot, the stock was 341 in February. It closed at 2.92 today still way down. Home Depot at an all-time high was 421, December of.
Starting point is 00:18:31 21 it's 292 target which had that move today hit a high in 2021 of 269 it's 161 at the close today so maybe maybe all that is factored in leave no doubt these stocks are not in uptrends just acknowledging just acknowledging just acknowledging just acknowledging what they did on some sorry earnings reports. Next, let's just talk some insanity here. So I call myself Mr. Logic, not only because I'm the most logical person on Earth, because of how many out there are so illogic. And we're talking about the people running the show in many areas.
Starting point is 00:19:34 So you got this place called Chicago. They get rid of the mayor who raised taxes and did nothing about crime. During her time, murders, carjackings, companies leaving. That's enough. And what did she do? She just raised taxes. So they bring in somebody else, and you know what he proposes? a $12 billion tax package, wealth taxes, meaning on your assets and more income taxes.
Starting point is 00:20:34 And instead of police, psychologists, people are going to run for the hills. They've already lost a bunch of the tax base. they've already lost a bunch of the tax base and look what they did. They doubled down on what caused all the problems. Marxists, control freaks, be Marxists and control freaks. It's amazing to watch. A city wealth tax and deep cuts in police spending.
Starting point is 00:21:22 This guy is a psychopath. You have to be a psychopath to push proposals that worsen your cities with worse proposals than the ones before. I know of two very large companies in Chicago that have massive employment there that are getting the hell out of there that have not been announced yet. It's amazing to watch. It's stunning to watch. a city income tax of 3.5% on any household with income above 100,000. The hell. So I had to mention that.
Starting point is 00:22:17 Next. And, you know, one would think we're making some of this stuff up. No, really. Corey Bush, another Marxist, she's more communist. Who wants to get rid of police? No, I'm not making it up. Wait to you here. And then with full markets.
Starting point is 00:22:45 This is the one only investors at. Hi, I'm Dr. Jake Goodman, host of Beyond the Script, the podcast where I sit down with pharmacists to answer the health questions you didn't even know you could ask at the pharmacy counter. A lot of what I see is just like chronic bloating, chronic stomach aches. Like I get a stomach ache every time that I eat. And it just becomes like a lifestyle where, oh, yeah, you know, I just, I have a stomach
Starting point is 00:23:42 ache every day. Or I'm constantly feeling like gassy. And all of those things are not something that generally, if you have a healthy gut, you should be living with. So that's when we deep dive. deep dive into your medication, we deep dive into your OTC medication, and then at that point, we can probably identify something that we can change. Starting point is 00:25:33 We're listening to. America is talking. Investors Edge. He's got to be pleased with that. The crowd is just on his feet here. He's a Cinderella boy. With Gary Colbomb. It comes highly recommended.
Starting point is 00:25:50 You're going to feel better if you talk to him. So are you ready? So you know the squad of bun. of Marxist-communist control freaks. They're calling for $14 trillion in reparations. No, no, no, no, no, not billion. Trillion. Communism knows no bounds on numbers. Doesn't matter if there's the money there. $14 trillion. No, really. I should stay silent for like one minute for you to just take that in. These people have a vote on our future that are being elected.
Starting point is 00:26:47 It's communism. These people are communists. They would take all the wealth of the earners and just give it away to others that didn't earn it. They would stifle everything. Bernie Sanders once called for a hundred percent tax rate above a million dollars.
Starting point is 00:27:13 By the way, we're not making that up. That's not a typo. These people have votes on our future. She wants to get rid of police, but just so you know, she has private security. So up yours to you on your safety. I'm going to take care of myself. And last but not least, and we have been warning about this. We have been talking to you about this.
Starting point is 00:27:52 We have pulled no punches on this. marijuana laced with fentanyl is rising across the U.S. As drug cocktail is found in New York, Alabama, Illinois, and Louisiana. And kids are dying. Yeah. Let's legalize heroin next. Some of them called for that. So we just wanted to start with all that.
Starting point is 00:28:31 And I know it's a downer and stuff, but you know what we deal with here, ladies and gentlemen? Freaking reality. We don't deal in fantasy land here. We are the greatest technicians on Earth, so that's what we're going to do next, and we're going to give you some good news for now. But we ain't screwing with you. And we have no friends in Washington, D.C. You can take your MAGA and stick it.
Starting point is 00:29:06 You can take your communists and stick it. Until we find some people that really do give a crap about the citizenry, we're headed to 50 trillion we're headed for more rules regulations fees fines mandates taxes and more distortions you think the inflation we just had was bad wait just remember what they're doing now they're raising rates there's going to be more distortions remember they're interfering with the free markets everything they do is interfering with the free markets there's always an outcome from interference in free markets. And every outcome is bad from people who don't have a clue what they're doing.
Starting point is 00:30:07 Remember, these are the same people who created the inflation and told us there wasn't any. It's all good. And this is not whining. This is reality. Now, the market wrap brought to you by Investment Dash Models.com. That's Jim Rohraback, one of the great markets. timers, no gray areas with the man you're either in or out of the market with his proprietary indicators. Go check it out.
Starting point is 00:30:37 Investment-mottles.com. Well, the Dow for the week is up 120 points. It was up 408 today. The Dow was up 0.36 of a percent. But the NASDAQ for the week is up 1.76. What have we been telling you about the NASDAQ? The S&P was up 48, NASDAQ-100-163. What did we tell you was starting to kick in gear?
Starting point is 00:31:16 The semiconductors. As semiconductors, the socks was up more than 2% today. The transports were up 294. They have been lagging. What are the three most important things that happened today? Number one. Least of important, the Dow, which curled under the important 50-day move and average,
Starting point is 00:31:38 got back above it today. There's still not an up trend there, but in order to stop going down, duh, you have to stop going down. You've got to find some support area, and it found a support area right here. Today, what's the second most important? Leadership. We continue to have leadership in the NASDAQ, NASDAQ, and now the semiconductors, which start the fuse on Monday. we told you Monday, hey, guess what? And the number one in that group right now is NVIDIA.
Starting point is 00:32:18 But Lamb Research broke into new highs on Monday. It was up another 15 today. Broadcom today, New High. And a few others turning the corner now, may I state for the record, it is a narrow group. There's a bunch still not active, well, but definitive improvement. And as we've told you, in order to really move, You need technology and semis to do well.
Starting point is 00:32:43 Well, we've got two or three days, and let's hope it continues. But what's the third thing today? Well, financials. So we've been using the same verbiage with you on the financials. In fact, it was on March 2nd, and we had no idea what was going to happen. We said to you that the regional banks were rolling over. don't like how they're acting and within three days look out below well we've been watching and watching and watching and saying to you we're not committing a dime to financials no way if we would
Starting point is 00:33:25 do one it would be jp morgan and if they ever normalize the regional banks meaning we get away from all this there would be some good coin to make but we're not ready yet that was as of yesterday you had a good day today in the financials for the first time since the high what we will state we think we got a chance here that it's trying to carve something out I was deciding what words I want to use we can't go further than that why because
Starting point is 00:34:11 it's fluid we don't know if something else is going to show up but stock price performance will determine the Silicon Valley Bank was on the hill yesterday stating what we've told you why they went under. The stock price. It was a raid.
Starting point is 00:34:34 So if these stock prices of the regional stop going down and at least start moving, well, you had a good move today, up about 7%, that's 6.5%. Still way, way down. But I would call it a little bit of traction today. We do not buy any.
Starting point is 00:35:01 But we're just letting you know that was some definitive better action in the financials. That's the three. Now, we'll add an addendum. The worst areas had a good day today. I've yet to scan them. I found one small group that I think turned the corner, but I haven't done the rest. I think some airlines may have turned the corner. to the upside. That's what I think. Volume patterns turning better. A little turning of the corner.
Starting point is 00:35:38 Ascending? Turning of the corner. I will say Ryanair, we mentioned it to you, broke into new high ground, but they report in four days from tomorrow. Very tough to buy that one so close. And another foreign airline, Copa, that broke out on earnings. But overall, airlines showing up. What else? We'll have that up next. On this, the one only investors edge. Hi, I'm Dr. Jake Goodman, host of Beyond the script, the podcast where I sit down with pharmacists to answer the health questions you didn't even know you could ask at the pharmacy counter.

Starting point is 00:39:09 What are we waiting for? Well, what are you waiting for? One, two, ready, go. Investors Edge with Gary Culper. And welcome once again to Investors Edge. Just remember when we sound like we're whining and complaining, it's for us. The numbers speak volumes. All right, what else?
Starting point is 00:39:52 As I stated, most of the worst areas bounce today. I went through a few. I can't call it anything but bounces for the most. But as we mentioned, airlines may have turned the corner. And when after I do my scans later, I'll see if anything else. Transport's had a good day. I would say transports held some support today. Can't go any further than that.
Starting point is 00:40:22 They kind of sort of almost look like the Dow. but can't go further than that. What I'm most emboldened by, and it's pretty simple. Some of the things we started buying in the last couple of weeks are getting going. That's the best way of knowing about the market. Are things working? Are they continuing to work?
Starting point is 00:40:50 How well are they working? And where are they working? leadership groups remain Mega CapTech, some of the big cap tech, some of the software names housing stocks We would now throw in the semiconductors Still have some work to do and it's not all If I scan 70 semiconductor stocks every night
Starting point is 00:41:19 I'd say 45 of them look like crap But the 25 are doing justice The financials can't go any further than, hey, it was a good day today. And I think there's a chance they finally put a line in the sand today. What do we get out of it? I don't know. Am I going to play it? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:41:41 The best name will be J.P. Morgan. That said, I can promise you, if the financials get going, you know, it's going to be the strongest ones percentage-wise, the ones that were blown up the most, the ones you'd be scared about the most. The small regionals. The JP Morgan's will move up, but they're kind of super tankers. Versus the other ones are kind of like speedboats. So that's going to be a big measurement for me.
Starting point is 00:42:14 I'm seeing some restaurants. Chipotle looks like it may want to break out again after it broke out. Broke out on earnings, been sitting tight. Darden, New Yearly high today. DRI. Broke out today. Restaurants. Do you know they have 1,800, it says 1,867 olive gardens.
Starting point is 00:42:43 Doesn't darn have other restaurant chains, though? More than Olive Garden, right? It's got to be. Huh. I'm going to have to double check on that. I was just looking it over. And there's actually some other restaurants. Texas Roadhouse.
Starting point is 00:43:14 jump right back above the 50 day today and almost new high ground. Wingstop. That ain't acting bad. Shake shack, big move on earnings. That were pretty bad. And then an activist shows up. So you got some, on the other end, you got Domino's Pizza, which basically has crashed. So somewhat mixed bag.
Starting point is 00:43:36 And we can tell you about others. But the real story here is, whoa, Home Depot warns, got. bad numbers, target, nothing good, both go up. Huh. Is it all factored in? Semiconductor is getting on the move. Those big cap tech still going. And better.
Starting point is 00:44:01 Financials today, hey, remember, this is the first day I can actually come out and say to you, that felt a little bit different. It felt like it had some buying pressure. but since I didn't put a dime down on it, you know I'm not that confident as of yet. We'll let you know if we do and advance declines today, three to one to the positive.
Starting point is 00:44:37 Guess what? It was three to one to the negative yesterday. So good day. Is it on the debt ceiling? Maybe. Gary, what if they don't come to a agreement on it? probably going to get hit but I think the market
Starting point is 00:45:01 is starting to speak a little bit in spite of the spite and we'll be here tomorrow to cover it but pretty darn good your job right now New Yearly High List if we're going to keep going
Starting point is 00:45:22 the first things on the new yearly high list will tend to do well as long as we continue to do well. And if we keep going higher, don't listen to the boo birds. Don't listen to me on my negativity. But we'll tell you what's working and what's not. And we'll tell you, we'll give you the straight when it comes to the market. And as anything changes, if anything changes, we'll let you know.
Starting point is 00:45:55 Potential change in the financials today. And maybe a little turn up in the, let's call it the airlines. I have yet to scan everything else, so I can't tell you much more, but also the Home Depot target, both crappy numbers and both worn going forward. And they ramped. And the Home Depot, down 12 yesterday, finishes down 6 and up 10 today, on their numbers, what's the market telling us? Up beats the heck out of me, I just know how to read price and patterns.
Starting point is 00:46:32 keeps us out of trouble. And that's your story of the day. Let's hope it continues. It's a long time coming.
