And welcome once again to Investors Edge. I'm Gary Colpom,
Starting point is 00:00:49 your host day. Thanks for being with us today. Glad you here, ladies and gentlemen, happy that you are listening. It is Monday, Thanksgiving week, November 25th, 2004. Hope you're having a good day. I am back home. Yay. And then I fly up to New York on Wednesday for Thanksgiving, as I am the nomad these days. As we have said, have a happy Thanksgiving.
Starting point is 00:01:17 If you're traveling, travel safe, take your time. I gather the airports are going to be busy. The roads are going to be filled. Just enjoy yourselves. All right. In case you don't know this, to serious talk about everything that affects you. We'll do the markets.
Starting point is 00:01:33 And man, a lot of jello moving on the plate in the markets. We'll do the election, the outcome, the future, the debt and the deficits that hopefully they will do something about. And it's serious. Talk on all of that. And if you do not get this radio show in your city, we'll post it at garyk.com. We'll also post it on our Twitter feed, which is now X. And if you'd like to follow us on X, go to X. Follow us.
Starting point is 00:02:09 And if you'd like to email us, just be nice. It's pretty simple. We have a lot to cover, ladies and gentlemen. I'm deciding whether I want to do markets first or the news of the day. I guess I'm going to do the markets first because that's of import. The market had this big gap up overnight. I think it was like 300 Dow points. There was really no news except they're saying it was up because of a Treasury Secretary.
Starting point is 00:02:40 I don't know. I don't care. All I know is it finished up 440 points, but interesting enough, the S&P only up 18. The NASDAQ only up 51, and I can tell you the NASDAQ being up 51 happened in the last half hour. No, not kidding. The NASDAQ 100 only up 28, but the transports up 387. But the midcaps were up when all was said and done today, they were better early, but the mid caps were still up 1.5% and the small caps were up 1.5% also.
Starting point is 00:03:28 But other things happened today in the market that I think are of import. I want to start out though with hey I just want to let you know continue to always care about risk what are we talking about so ladies and gentlemen I'm going to describe a few things for you I'm not going to make a comment on them and what I think I'm just going to describe them for you and let you decide let me repeat that
Starting point is 00:04:03 I'm going to describe some things in the market today and then let you decide. First and foremost, we've got to talk Bitcoin. We have to talk Bitcoin because of it broke out of the eight-month trading range. You have the talk of a strategic Bitcoin reserve, like a strategic oil reserve that we have. And in case you don't know what that is, it's the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to where, just in case we need to produce oil to get oil prices down. Well, the talk of a strategic Bitcoin reserve, interesting.
Starting point is 00:05:02 So, for the record, and there's no argument on this, Bitcoin is not a company. It has no earnings. it has no sales. It has no product. It has no services. Ethereum is same. I heard there are a few other coins on the move as of recent as they heated up. Bitcoin had a move from, what was the high?
Starting point is 00:05:32 65,000 to almost 100,000. Almost at 100,000. Dropped a few thousand today. I think it was down 4% today. No big deal. I think it closed around 94,000. Anybody you ever heard of it? a micro strategy. It is basically a company that was a software company that just changed to a
Starting point is 00:05:58 Bitcoin company. All they do is own Bitcoin. As best as I know, I'm pretty sure I'm right on this. I can be wrong. But as I look at microstrategy.com, I'm not seeing so much. They do have what is known as Micro Strategy 1. It's a unified analytics platform. So I guess they do have some business there, but basically the stock moves on the move on Bitcoin. And what they've been doing is borrowing money to buy more Bitcoin. Just let you know, they've been borrowing money to buy more Bitcoin. And in the last, from the 18th to the 24th, That ended yesterday because it does trade over the weekend. It bought $5.4 billion more of Bitcoin.
Starting point is 00:07:01 As best as I know it, as best as I know it, with borrowed money. I would also like to mention that I watch somebody on TV today, and this one had my interest. when the person was queried about the head of micro strategy's prediction that Bitcoin would go to a million, I believe. I think they said a million. She said 49 million. And then went on to say, if you think that's crazy, and then went on to say why it's not crazy. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:07:49 So we just want to let you know that it's had a good move up after an answer. eight-month breakout, Bitcoin, got rejected today at 100,000, but it can go through it tomorrow. You have the main, whatever you want to call it. I pretty much borrowing $5 billion plus and buying more in the last week. And now I heard somebody say $49 million for the price of Bitcoin. And then said something about $42, I don't know, a couple of trillion. I'm just letting you know. Oh, we're not done. So I have this company called, you know, I'm not even going to mention the company's name. Hope you don't mind. But the company
Starting point is 00:08:49 is a very, very small cap, a market diagnostic health care for chronic disease, It's a diagnostic company for chronic disease. And in the last couple of weeks, the stock doubled because they said they're going to do what Microstrategy did. Bitcoin. Hit a high of 80 today and closed at 61. So now just a company, this company, is just going to be a little bit of. chronic disease diagnostics and a lot of Bitcoin.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Hmm. Hmm. Just want you to keep it in the file manager. We'll see how it plays out. Back in 99, you had mutual funds change their name to the so-and-so technology fund to the so-and-so internet fund. When the internet crashed, they changed it back to the so-and-so technology fund. You had companies add dot com to their name.
Starting point is 00:10:14 And by the way, the stocks went up because of it. We're just letting you know. We're going to let you listen to what we say and think about it. And we'll see how it plays out. There's my Bitcoin thing. The next thing I would just want to mention is, you ever hear of Casava Sciences? I've never heard of them.
Starting point is 00:10:43 The stock closed today at $4.29, down $22.18, or a drop of 83.78%. We'll explain up next. On this, the one-only Investors Edge. I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and C, Arvind Krishna, and I asked him, how can companies use AI to its fullest potential to create smarter business?
Starting point is 00:12:53 My one advice to them, pick areas you can scale. Don't pick the shiny little toys on the side. For example. If anybody has more than 10% of what they had for customer service 10 years ago, they're already five years behind it. If anybody is not using AI to make their developers who write software 30% more productive today, with the goal of being 70% more productive. Yeah. So we are not asking our clients to be the first experiment on it.
Starting point is 00:13:30 We say you can leverage what we did. We're happy to bring out all our learnings, including what needs to change in the process. Because the biggest change is not technology. It's getting people to accept that there's a different way to do things. To listen to the full conversation, visit IBM.com slash smart talks. Hi, I'm Dr. Jake Goodman, host of Beyond the Script, the podcast where I sit down with pharmacists to answer the health questions you didn't even know you could ask at the pharmacy counter. In this episode, we are diving into gut health with CVS pharmacist Victoria Motola, who explains why so many of us live with stomach issues we should not accept as normal. A lot of what I see is just like chronic bloating, chronic stomach aches.
Starting point is 00:14:25 Like I get a stomach ache every time that I eat. And it just becomes like a lifestyle where, oh, yeah, you know, I just have a stomachache every day. Or I'm constantly feeling like gassy. And all of those things are not something that generally, if you have a healthy gut, you should be living with. So that's when we deep dive. We deep dive into your medication.
Starting point is 00:14:44 We deep dive into your OTC medication. And then at that point, we can probably identify something that we can change. change. Hear the full conversation, plus some fascinating facts about how gut health affects so much more than just your stomach on Beyond the Script, a podcast from CVS Pharmacy and IHeart Radio. Listen now wherever you get your podcasts. All right, quick quiz for the hiring managers out there. What's worse? Being understaffed or being poorly staffed? Well, that's a trick question, because both are recipes for chaos.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Either way, just say to yourself, this is a person. is a job for Indeed's sponsored jobs. The last bastion of quality programming. With Gary Coltbaum.
Starting point is 00:16:27 It doesn't get better than this. Okay. I've never heard of Casava Sciences, but it was down 83.78% today percent because whatever drug they were trying to come out with did not meet the endpoint in the trials. It's a no sales biotech. And we just want to remind you there still is risk in markets.
Starting point is 00:17:07 That's all. It had a $1.4 billion market cap going in today even though they had no sales. And I also want to make a note that the stock has been trading since July of 2000, when it had an $184, it was $184 stock. It's been public for 24 years. In the last year, they have no sales. Interesting. Whatever they do, I hope they find a drug that works because they're trying to do something for Alzheimer's.
Starting point is 00:17:49 That's a very debilitating illness in the elderly and sometimes not so elderly. but we're just bringing you up because of the word risk, the word risk. I just want to let you know there's still risk. What else in the markets? Gold got splattered today. As we told you, we sold our gold and then watched it go lower. And then last week, up five straight days, they gapped it down today, hit it pretty darn good. below the 50 day, we'll see how it plays out.
Starting point is 00:18:37 Our issue is gold miners act terribly. That's an issue. I also want to mention the defense stocks and government contractor stocks continue to be under serious pressure. There was talk about an Israel ceasefire with Lebanon or something like that or somebody else said, because of the election. Okay. Just letting you know defense stocks are under serious pressure. And kind of like big time, serious pressure.
Starting point is 00:19:18 Wanted to bring that up also to you. Drug stocks, most of them, very bearish. Drugstore stocks, very bearish. Emerging markets Brazil IFA China very much
Starting point is 00:19:47 underperforming at this juncture this all can change we're just letting you know as of right now why will be bringing this up to you well we just want to let you know
Starting point is 00:20:05 oils they have been better. They came down today. Oil prices were down $2 in change, which is good at the pump. And the pipeline stocks are bit strong. They got hit today, though. We're not, we said a couple of weeks ago,
Starting point is 00:20:26 we're off the avoid part, but we're certainly not bullish on them. We're going to stick with, we'll call it, eh, how's that? Certainly not any leadership. and there's still many names in the oils like BP and Devon Energy and Conoco that are just downright bearish is all heck. Consumer staples, beverages slash soft drinks, food, most bearish. Not all, but most.
Starting point is 00:21:05 And when we mean bearish, some pretty dark. good downtrends. And again, why are we doing this? Just to let you know. Semiconductors, weak, relatively very weak. Some of them bounce today, but relatively very weak. We just want to let you know. And we think most are avoids. I think I got two or three names that act well. And yes, they can bounce. Something that's dropped 30% can bounce 10%, but doesn't change the downtrend. NVIDIA reported earnings Wednesday opened up hot Thursday above its range finished mid-range of the day Nvidia finished in a big broader range going back a bit on Friday got downgraded today dropped $6.
Starting point is 00:22:25 With the Dow up over 400, over 4% breaking my little green line, the 21-day moving average, headed for the 50-day, which is just below. We think Nvidia is an avoid on buying. If you own it, we let you decide. We're not saying it's going to be squashed. But in order to buy something,
Starting point is 00:22:55 you must think it's going higher. I don't think it's going higher right now. That's Nvidia. A break of the 50-day moving average would not be great news. That would be about a buck and a half below. Anything below the 50-day moving average cannot ascend. Doesn't mean that's to be squashed, but physically cannot ascend. Why are we bringing this up?
Starting point is 00:23:22 Because we think you should know. We just want to let you know. No, what's not? Because before we're done with this show, we're going to tell you what is, and more things showed up in the what is category today. And a lot of jello moving on the plate today. Biotech, not all, but they've crushed Amgen in the Dow. Regeneron, these are big biotechs. Biogen is regeneron they crashed. Biogen they crashed. And that's been going on for a while.
Starting point is 00:24:08 Vertex pharmaceuticals just got belted recently, but much better than the others. So biotech, why would biotech? Well, then Robert F. Kennedy. And by the way, I'm no fan of that pick. I don't care what anybody says. and I know the people on the right are all, you know, whatever's picked is good. I mean, I have people tweeting to me, oh, Matt Gates is to, Matt Gates, give me a break. That's what I, don't be in the tank, be unbiased people. Up next, we'll segue on the markets because new stuff's showing up. This is the one only investors edge. Hello, hello, I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of Smart Talks with IBM.
Starting point is 00:25:19 I recently spoke with IBM's new director of research, Jake Mbata. We discussed his vision for the future of quantum computing. At IBM research, what we always do is answer what is the future of computing. Whether it's coming up with new algorithms, coming up with better AI, coming up with quantum, or coming up with just how do different accelerators go together. It's our DNA to answer the question. of what is the future. Isn't it a perfect problem for IBM
Starting point is 00:25:47 because you kind of need to have a legacy of building stuff. Yes. Building actual physical machines. Yeah, it's why I came to IBM. I wanted the experience, the culture of building hard things that others have not done before.
Starting point is 00:26:06 Where do you imagine we are in the timeline of this technology? There will come a point when it will mature, right? Yeah. My cell phone is a mature technology at this point. How far are we from that point with quantum? By 2029, we'll build the first fault-tolerant quantum computer.
Starting point is 00:26:24 That is one that can run a very, very large, large problem. To learn how IBM is building the future of computing, visit IBM.com slash quantum. Starting point is 00:28:46 Indeed.com slash podcast. Terms and conditions apply. Need to hire? This is a job for Indeed's sponsored jobs. We're listening to. America is talking. Investors edge. He's got to be pleased with that.
Starting point is 00:29:06 The crowd is just on his feet here. He's a Cinderella boy. With Gary Coltbaum. It comes highly recommended. You're going to feel better if you talk to him. And what's a lot. again to Investors Edge. Retail. When you have a chance, you're going to go look at the XRT. It is the S&P Retail Select Industry Index, and you will see it broke out of a pretty nice flat range today. And I went through my whole retail page
Starting point is 00:29:47 now. When I mentioned these names, we're not telling you to buy sell short a cover. We're just letting you know that retail. So you got a little bit of TJX. Broke out today. They just reported recently. Modest earnings and sales growth,
Starting point is 00:30:04 but that broke out. Decker's Outdoor, Decker's, the Ugg Boots. That broke out on Friday. Remember we mentioned that on Friday while we were doing the show from the lobby of Caesar's Palace because the internet did not work in the rooms.
Starting point is 00:30:20 I must tell you if I had an igloo in the Arctic circle, I think I'd have better internet than what Caesar's Palace had in Vegas. But Decker's broke out on Friday and a little bit more today. I would say pullbacks are preferable. Burlington broke out Friday. It was up about 15 today, only finished up five, but reports tomorrow and there's nothing you can do.
Starting point is 00:30:48 Home Depot, Edge to New Highs on their craft. numbers but that gives me another little segue interest rates really dropped today interest rates really dropped today a huge drop today go look at the 10-year yield dropped 1.45 so in other words we're at 4.41 and we dropped a 4.265. That's huge. And if we have a top in place, that's big. Why? Because what happens when yields come down? Oh, housing stocks. XHB and ITB. These are the home builders and the home construction. Coming up the right side strong, the first one is more home builders, the other one's home builders and homes. construction.
Starting point is 00:32:01 Second one's a little bit weaker. But they emerged today with volume off of those lower rates. And I think retail had something to do with that also. Also housing related. So you had floor and decor. A stock's been acting terribly. Boom, right up. Restoration hardware.
Starting point is 00:32:24 William Sonoma. Just entered in the Dow, Sherwin Williams, into new high ground on their big 1% sales growth. Oh, by the way, the two Dow stocks entered into the Dow recently is the NVIDIA, which is Toppy and Sherwin Williams, which moved above range today. So that's a really good thing if it continues. And I think there's a better than 50% chance that we've seen the high near term. We never know long term.
Starting point is 00:32:57 regardless what people tell you my target for 2025 is they don't know too many variables so housing and retail had a better transports the IYT knew high at the close today
Starting point is 00:33:16 that gaped up on the election gave back almost everything last Wednesday was the low Thursday's when we jumped on the small and midcap, transport's going along for the ride. So just letting you know. Financials, mixed day today.
Starting point is 00:33:48 They were strong early. I think Goldman was up $10 early, finished up a quarter. But they were okay. They gapped up on the election, edged above a little range, and still look okay after the gap up. Regional banks.
Starting point is 00:34:07 KRE broke above a little range today. Didn't finish that great, but they were on the move. And then segueing the other way. Some of the bigger cap stuff today pulled back hard. Netflix, down over $30. They have to go in up $120 from a breakout. There was no news. Volume did pick up.
Starting point is 00:34:38 Something like an Oracle. It was down, I don't know, 2%. pulled back a little bit and I can go the rest Tesla drop 14 bucks some of the big names on the other end Apple I didn't see any news
Starting point is 00:34:57 but I must tell you Apple in the went from 230 and a half to 232 within 30 seconds late in the day I've yet to see any news that for an Apple is a huge
Starting point is 00:35:13 move and I'm anxious to to see if there was any news on it that are of note. And I don't see anything as of yet. But just let you know, that one went the other way. Some wicked swings in the mids to the upside, the smalls to the upside, the bigs to the downside. The Dow to the upside. As we mentioned, Sherwin Williams just put into the Dow,
Starting point is 00:35:48 that was good for about 70 Dow points today. United Health had a good day today, even though a bunch of the other managed care stocks act terribly. And let me finish this part up by stating also. We started with risk. Know what you're buying into. I'm getting calls from people I don't know asking me about stocks with no sales. Why? Because they're being talked about.
Starting point is 00:36:20 And they don't even know they have no sales. I'm talking about quantum computing stocks, nuclear stocks, companies with no sales. They've had good moves. Let me repeat that, no sales. If you open the lemonade stand in your driveway and sold one glass of lemonade, you'd have more sales. yet their stocks are going up by the hundreds of millions of dollars because of a theme, but they have no sales. We just want you to remember this.
Starting point is 00:37:06 We are not telling you what to do. We're not here to scare you off, tell you not to. We're just letting you know the word risk is still in the markets. And we are getting the feeling of many, the many, the many, that are not paying attention to what they're getting themselves into. They're spending no time on companies with no sales.
Starting point is 00:37:50 And you do know what happens eventually to companies with no sales once the theme goes by the wayside. That's all. So the good and the bad. And let me state for the record, the good was pretty darn good today. The bad was bad also.
Starting point is 00:38:18 But small and mids, retail, housing, transports, I'm looking around, some economically sensitive names. And in the Dow today, Dow was only up, I can only say 1%. But it's good 1%. Advanced declines were pretty decent today. Though, as we said, some of the mega caps coming in, but as we said, one of the mega of mega caps Apple, they jumped on earlier in the day, later in the day,
Starting point is 00:38:53 and now sits in a five-month trading range, and we'll see if it decides to break out. Apple would have a really nice-looking break if it moves above 237.50. That would be the number. And volume did pick up at the end of the day today. Let me finish this segment with, Do not forget what I said about that 10-year yield.
Starting point is 00:39:22 Very good move. To the downside. Up next, what else is happening in the world? I'm Gary. This is the one only investor's edge. Starting point is 00:43:43 You're listening to. What are we waiting for? Well, what are you waiting for? One. A few things. Ready, go. Action! In The Bester's Edge. With Gary Culpa. A few things of note.
Starting point is 00:44:20 In Vegas, they were selling bottled waters between $6 and $7, $6 and $8. No, not making that up. In Caesars, they have this little, like a food court, and I got like three tacos, and I got a bottled water, and I was like, what's with this price here? I looked the tacos were the normal, and the $7.99 for the bottled water. By the way, regular size. Hmm. And I'm thinking to myself, by the way, that's just one little example.
Starting point is 00:45:00 And I was just thinking to myself about $7.99 for a water. I was thinking about people. And I'd want to return it. I should have returned it. I should have said I didn't realize it. there is a definitive separation out there ladies and gentlemen and maybe Vegas isn't the greatest example but I think it is I think it's a good example just want to let you know I was pretty busy but they had the F1 race out there I spoke to some management and they said that it's you
Starting point is 00:45:41 know it's been okay before the race nothing spectacular they said but okay my little small I hadn't been to Vegas in a bunch of years, and I got to tell you that. I remember in the 80s, we used to go to the Riviera Hotel. I remember what the airport was like. The airport is just amazing now. Big Wow. Frontier Airlines, I'm not going to be able to fly them again. No entertainment, no wireless, and you have to pay for pretzels.
Starting point is 00:46:24 And I'm thinking to myself, Huh? Seriously. And nothing against it. People were very nice, and they landed safely, which counts for everything. But the expectation these days.
Starting point is 00:46:45 Come on. How do you not have wireless? How do you not have entertainment? Even Southwest, you get it on your phone or your laptop. And I still had to pay a decent amount. I'd have to pay a decent amount to get a decent seat. so your people were great
Starting point is 00:47:06 frontier but come on my son flew spirit home from Vegas he said it was just fine I got him one of those big seats up front just letting you know prices for everything are quite elevated
Starting point is 00:47:29 the election the election well they nominated a treasury secretary I really don't know who the guy is Scott Bessent. I really don't know him, but I'm going to be looking it up, looking him up. Everybody says he's great.
Starting point is 00:47:50 Okay, cool. What I do love is that he is a deficit hawk. I love that. I'm so happy with this Trump administration right now just on that. My goodness gracious, they're going to do something about the sun. I scope. How many times have I said that on this show in the last how many years? They've used you and I. They've made themselves wealthy. They've made their friends wealthy. They made their donors wealthy off of our backs.
Starting point is 00:48:28 And when they didn't have enough money, they went into massive debt to cover their asses. That's what they did. And it just so happens. Biden took the championship belt away from the last few people. Now, Trump was no, he was terrible too, but it looks like he may be making up for it. And I've been watching what Elon and Vivek have been putting on Twitter, now X, about what they're going to do and how they're going to do it and what they're going to dress. And you have all these people tweeting to them about all the things we've been telling you about. 10 million here, 5 million there. They've made the words billion into a footnote.
Starting point is 00:49:12 But if you think about it, $10 million to study the horn-toed frog in Indonesia. What? By the way, I just made that up. But it's worse than that. What would $10 million do for your city, for your at-risk kids if they didn't do that stupid? You get my point? So I'm thrilled. if they follow through, I'm thrilled
Starting point is 00:49:46 and all I can tell you is it looks like they are. They're already identifying them. No, they have not answered me. I guess they're happy with who they have, but I'll keep plugging away because I can help. But how big is that for the economy if we don't run debt and deficits?
Starting point is 00:50:05 You know what I heard? Well, if you cut the debt, it's going to hurt the economy because so much of government has been a part of the economy. I think there's some truth to that, but you know what the bigger truth is? If we get the government acting like a real business
Starting point is 00:50:29 actually accountable, I think you can add a good percentage point to GDP. You know what one percentage point of GDP adds? A lot more revenue to the government in taxes, which will lower the deficits even, more. A lot more money in your pockets, a lot more profits for corporate America. And you know what a virtuous cycle looks like? That would be it. And in case you don't know, I use the word scam with the Biden administration. It's found out. They were funding their debt with T bills, which is
Starting point is 00:51:07 the royal scam, because if they funded it with T bonds, they wouldn't be able to sell or they'd have to pay up, which means there's trillions of dollars to come do in the bond market in the years ahead. So call me thrilled, but call me Missouri. Show me. So far, so good.
Starting point is 00:51:34 You all have a great evening, drive carefully. Boy, we only did markets today. And when you get home, do like we do. Quite simple. Make sure you hug your family.
